Excellent remake of a classic. Voice acting and story are topnotch. The gunplay is similar to the level of Max Payne games ; extremely fun and satisfying.
Few issues with the game is that, during my playthrough, it crashed few times.

The script PORT. The tank barrel of the train must go after setting two arrows on the railway at the gate and the player sets it on fire for an explosion! You've ruined this Chapter beyond recognition , what a shame!
And also why the Train and Tram are not available to the player - this is not an accessible game world at all, but only a visual image...

    **A TERAZ POZOR SPOILER**

P.S. Český dabing je ♥♥♥♥ úžasný...

    Za mňa 10/10

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a full remake of the original cult Mafia action-adventure game. In my opinion this game is missing several aspects of the original game, which I consider to be vital part of the overall Mafia experience. But more about that later. This newMafia: Definitive Edition is a full remake of the original cult Mafia action-adventure game. In my opinion this game is missing several aspects of the original game, which I consider to be vital part of the overall Mafia experience. But more about that later. I want to start with the graphics. It is excellent, breathtaking even, with great colours, lighting and many details. This new graphics suits the atmosphere of the original game very well. One more thing that I think this game did well was the historical radio announcement, baseball game etc. If only everything else was as good as that. Sadly it is not. The story was probably the biggest selling point of the original game and I am very disappointed that the remake was not able to retain the high standard. It does not start bad, the first few missions are pretty good, but then it starts to slip and the story diverges from the original more and more. What disappointed me the most is the ending, instead of the profound truth in the original we got pathetic generic Hollywood style nonsense about family. That was not the point of the Mafia at all, you understood nothing Hangar 13. Daniel Vavra (the creator of the original Mafia) himself says that he would rewrite most of the Mafia dialogues if he was doing the remake today, but he would keep the essential bits that make up the moral of the story. I cannot stress how important that statement is. From the gameplay perspective, there were big changes also. This game became a cover shooter and not a very good one at that. How is it possible that you cannot shoot blindly from the cover just as your enemies do. Also the enemies are all hard scripted, they are put in the game just for you to shoot them, without any thought given to why they are actually supposed to be there. The number of enemies is also more than doubled when compared to the original. Why are you only capable of carrying one small arm and only three magazines for it? Why is the path to your mission target always displayed on a map as if you were five years old and incapable of choosing the path for yourself? Next thing is driving and it is yet another disappointment. It went from a perfect simulation in the original game to a generic arcade in the remake. Also you cannot really enjoy driving, because most of the driving parts of the missions were just simply cut from the remake, which is a shame, because just cruising through the empty city at night after completing a hard mission was a big part of the overall Mafia experience. These things matter to me greatly. I do not even want to mention the stupid car chases, exploding barrels, ammo crates and so many other things that this remake butchered. The music is also changed significantly, the original radio tracks are all removed and replaced by other songs from the same era and often even from the same musician. Why? The mission music is a generic and I definitely prefer the atmospheric music of the original Mafia. If the original game was ever criticized for anything, it was usually a lack of secondary quests or additional content. And this remake instead of remedying that, cuts even the few missions from Lucas Bertone that were in the original game. There are no microtransactions, but predictably they were able to squeeze at least a bit of SJW propaganda. Talking about Sarah, she is another fine example of how the remake does not care about consequences and realism. In the original game the subject of you doing all the killing and being a gangster in context of your relationship with Sarah was discussed several times. In the remake she is seemingly oblivious to what you do for living, despite the fact that she works in the Salieri’s Bar herself. Anyway the main thing is that she can vote now. I think I know who she is voting for.

Maybe all this came out a bit too harsh. Mafia: Definitive Edition is by no means a bad game, but it just is not Mafia. That did not surprised me since I did not expect Hangar 13 to make a good job, but what surprised me at least a little bit is how the vast majority of players are able to look past all this and still enjoy the game. Final Verdict: 55 %

Sure... there is few things that could be done better or closer to original but why to play the same game again and again? This is not a remaster. It is remake. Characters are way deeper, dialogs are more consistent and more relevant. Less cringe, dumb and stupid. City and mission locations are literally from another dimension, . just like world and gameplay details. There is depth added to the time period with prohibition and financial crisis - both mentioned in original but it was all. Game fills a lot of holes. If there is something for you it is not just "there" but it has a story or sequence. NPC finally just do not waste time by standing somewhere for years in case gangsters would need some info etc. Gameplay is nice and smooth. Game is hard on classic difficulty - way more than ortiginal game. (You could do all the missions without taking a single hit in Mafia CoLH). AI is finally at least little bit smart and realistic - if they don´t see you change cover they presume you are still there and you can kick their ass from back - no supernatural "i know where you are all the time". and way more. Developers got rid of Lucas fetch and gave you collectibles instead of draging you around the map three times to get car you will never use. There is few flaws - throwing animation is dreadful, some bushes are made from concrete, there is no driving to bar after mission, shoting from car is made for kindergarten and thei got rid of few dumb characters like yellow pete, idiot joe or big dick. Overall it is really nice little budget game for two thirtd of the AAA price and so close to 9/10 but it is 8/10 in this condition - hope we will get some DLCs becouse it would be waste of really nice city to just say the same old, overplayed and boring story - even reimagined. But more important is: This game makes the original game like 5/10 or less. Expand

3/5 Gameplay has a lot of driving, hiding and killing. Movement is wonky and the camera is rather loose. Cars are fun.

2/5 Replay value is very low for Story, decent for Free Ride. Game has many collectibles but they don't matter much.

4/5 Graphics are quite sharp, a living city and rather odd animations. Nice effects, great immersion, a decent optimization.

5/5 Music offers old-timey songs, great voiceovers and good effects. Radio adds an extra layer of immersion with events.

Some hits from the original are missing.

    Verdict 7/10

Story is rich and gets pretty interesting at times but takes risky turns unlike in the original, it surprises a classic player like me. It's got various mission objectives, fun driving in cars and a decent cover shooting system. World is big and full of collectibles. The ending conclusion didn't make any sense when comparing the character development and what they did then.

The story is superb; I could barely put down my controller because it was just so captivating. I can't tell you anything about how it compares to the original story, but I do know that this re-written game is a masterpiece.
The beautifully crafted city of Lost Heaven is an authentic backdrop for the events that take place in the game. As you drive from Salieri's Bar to the mission marker, you can listen to period-accurate music on the radio, news broadcasts, and even a baseball game. Often times, when I had already arrived at my destination, I would park my car and listen for the news anchor to finish his segment on the Great Depression, the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany, the weather, or the goings-on in Lost Heaven, Empire Bay, and even New Bordeaux.
It's these little details that make the world in this game feel real and grounded.

After I had finished the story, I was sad that it was over so quickly; after only about 10 hours, the campaign was done. I thought the game was over for me, but then I played the Freeride mode and was amazed by the number of extra missions and challenges the game had to offer.

Now, many people are unhappy that the game has borrowed many aspects from Mafia 3, but I don't feel that way. Hangar 13 didn't copy and paste assets, no, they took what they had, improved it something fierce, and implemented it in the Definitive Edition of Mafia. The gunplay? Improved. The lighting? Improved. Performance? Improved. Gameplay? Improved. AI? Improved.

Not a single thing about this game displeases me and I can only recommend to anyone to play it. Be it for the amazing story, the beautiful city to explore, the fantastic soundtrack or simply the gorgeous-looking cars - play it.

A little personal note I would like to add - there are an awful lot of 0-point reviews on this game that are mostly people saying "Oh, I'm not happy with the way the camera works, 0 points." or "All in all I like it, but they changed the way Tommy looks, 0/10". And I just have to ask - who writes a review and judges the entire game by one fault?

Mafia allowed us to explore more than what we could only imagine, movies like the Godfather gave us a little bit of and idea of how the italian mafia really used to run the streets back in the old days, and Mafia gave us an even greater understanding of what one of the darkest periods of our country really looked like, the shootouts, the sitdowns , the drama ,and such realistic driving mechanichs, made us feel like we were in a Martin Scorsese movie. But not everything is great in paradise, even thought the game is great the mechanics could've been improved, there's a couple little errors in the game that became just downright infuriating

The melee for example is one area of the game must players probably avoided , it was just broken there's just not much to say about it, you'd have to experience it to understand , aside form the meele there's a couple other things in the game that just really get frustrating, civilian drivers purposely wrecking into you in the middle of a chase or getaway, the lack of weapon and medkit selections just get old quick. Another area of the game that's hard to understand is why they wouldn't implement the free roam mode into the actual gameplay itself, let's face it not everyone is gonna roam around the game and not get anything done story wise, we are here for the story mainly, and not everyone is going to go back and just play the free roam once you have finished the game, that was a real buzzkill for players who wanted to get an immersive experience like Mafia 2, the fact that we can't even customize Tommy's outfit in the main game is just way too linear for me, like come on one of the best features Mafia has is the classy mobster looks you can give your character.

Even though the game is everything a remake should be i feel like 2k could've done better, they could've made this remake truly great had the game been a little bit more thought out and polished before it's realease. Don't get me wrong the game is amazing , the graphics are outstanding and the story line is great, but with the standards set by Mafia 2 this one fell a little short,2k could've really made a masterpiece had team not get lazy towards the end and rushed to get the game out, and even though the bugs and glitches that persisted throught the game were not game breaking , the game itself failed to deliver a truly Mafia experience and gave more us more of a story driven game that's more like a movie and with doing so took many of the features that we loved about the game out hence free roam and character customization when they didn't really needed to be taken out. If Hangar 13 really wanted to give us that movie like experience they should've looked at similiar recent games that played like a movie and also gave the players more freedom to interact with the world.

I would like to start by saying that the original Mafia is in my top 3 games of all time, I have completed it countless times, and I consider it a masterpiece.

With that out of the way, I think this remake is a masterpiece on its own. Some of the criticism I have read was that the feel of the story is different and that the authors missed the point of the original. While the tone is indeed very different, I think this was done deliberately and not because the authors of the remake did not understand the original.

This is a much darker and grim take on the original story and, in my opinion, a more realistic take. Gone is the feeling of an era of "gentlemen" gangsters. During many missions, you will feel bad about your actions and Tommy is portrayed as a much more conflicted character other than a good guy who just got together with bad company. All of the characters are much more developed and it really helps with fleshing out the gangster underworld. Not all changes to the story and characters are for the better in my opinion, but overall it still works very well.

I played on the classic difficulty and it was an ideal challenge, I highly recommend you choose this difficulty if you have played the original Mafia (the infamous race still took me a few tries). The combat is kind of a generic cover shooter, but it works really well and I have enjoyed it.

The few things I missed were Luca Bertone's side quests which have been reduced to just finding a hidden car in the world. I also missed the original music.

Overall, I highly recommend this game both for new players and for people who have played the original! I have not had this much fun in a game in a long time. If you have played the original, just be ready to accept the much darker narrative.

    The original Mafia (2002) was THE 'perfect' PC game and in many ways still is; it combined fine simulation and physics elements in both the gunplay and driving - being derived / tweaked from the fantastic 'hidden and dangerous' engine. Driving - you could even use an FFB wheel accurately, perform true drifts, clutch oversteer, liftoff oversteer, countersteer, handbreaking. The AI, being again from a milsim was robust. I could go on at length here.... but lets just end with this thought;

Unfortunately due to the machinations of this industry - most of the older devs (globally) capable of recreating such a fine game, have long moved on to fintech/banking. The skills, dedication and talent required to 'remake' this game just don't exist anymore. Retaining the former Illusion Softworks lead is just not enough; Hanger 13 needs real talent in numbers and it just doesn't exist, not with my generation (millennial). I'm sorry...

Outstanding. The charm of the original story with some well thought out tweaks and additions. Character recast was spot on. Combat was still a tad clunky, but enjoyable nevertheless.

It's nice to see a game led by a good quality story again rather than trying to shoehorn something into an endless array of side missions.

    Well worth playing.

    Negatives:

    2) Poor choice of music. Especially hated the music in racing mission because it sounds like it's from a generic family, children friendly comedy, adventure movie and not a fun and exciting racing music. Driving music is very boring background noise and nothing more. Many missions have weird unfitting music. Overall music is not terrible but not good either.
    3) Guns sound pathetic, weak. Original game had great gun sounds compared to this.
    4) Gunplay is very generic and overall boring. It feels like you are shooting a BB gun.
    5) Missions are not true to the original. Many small and big elements get changed, replaced or just removed. Even things that do not need any tweaking at all. Some of the environments are mirrored for no reason and take away from the original experience. Many action scenes are overdone and make it look and feel like any other generic shooter game etc.

But here is the worst offense.
    6) Characters... Why?
Paulie is so annoying that he actually becomes obnoxious. Especially his new voice and face which I hate.
Sam is nothing like he was before.
Don Salieri is meh at best.
Vincenzo is now some weird mentally ill gun nut.
Frank is too weird and creepy. He was a genuinely nice guy before.
Tom... is nothing like he was before. Now he is nothing more than a thug.

Oh! Ralph is decent and Sarah is actually nice. I like her.

Overall this game is worth 5/10, maybe 6/10 at most. But I'm forced to give this 0/10 simply because there are people who give it 9/10 and 10/10 for no good reason. Essentially this is like Steams voting system. You either give it thumbs up or thumbs down and nothing inbetween.

    Disappointment!

game ruined by a stupid off-centered camera. the original was center, why do you have to screw up?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not Mafia. This is some weird reboot/re-imagining that has completely butchered what made the original so great. Characters are unrecognizable. Tommy went from a conflicted, understated man caught up in something he wasn't quite sure of, to some stereotypical thug. Paulie now sounds like a sesame street character. Their relationship was the heart of the story, and now it's gone. You don't care about anyone. Sam's motivations no longer make any sense due to some truly bizarre rewrites. On the subject of rewrites, all the original subtlety of the game is gone. It's all been transformed into cheesy one-liners, and chest thumping machismo.

The game looks good, not great. The lighting is awesome, but other than that it's not that impressive. The shooting is AWFUL, enemies are braindead, and on and on. Entire missions have been cut from the game, it took me under 9 hours to beat, and others have been changed dramatically, and not for better.

For example, SPOILERS, there's a mission where you have to shoot down an airplane as it's taking off. In the original, you did this, and it crashed. In this game however, the plane doesn't crash right away, you have to pursue it as it flies flaming through the air across the city until it crashes. You then spout off a one-liner before executing the near dead target with your pistol. This is indicative of the change in tone. Tommy is now a coldblooded action hero. It's dumb, it's Hollywood blockbuster dumb.

I was really looking forward to this, but Hanger 13 seems to have assumed they could just make the game look pretty, and call it Mafia hoping the majority of people who buy it never played the original. If you have played the original you're going to be disappointed. I actually redownloaded the 2002 game, and am having infinitely more fun playing that than this hollow shell of a game.

Прошел с огромным удовольствием, сюжет шикарен, визуал на твердую четверку, не идеален но когда играешь на телике очень неплохо. Заслуга сюжета не ангар 13 конечно же.

Well done. The game is masterpiece. Finally, hangar 13 made in mind. Although I doubted I thought it would spoil. Somehow not expected

Expand

This is a full-fledged, honest to God remake. Some changes to the story will upset hardcore fans, but I think this approach is absolutely justified. Even though this remake is not as amazing as new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7, it’s still a worthy update.

The main difference between the remake and the original game is that the latter was outstanding for its time, while the Definitive Edition is “merely” good. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. What’s crucial here is the fact that Hangar 13 approached the original’s narrative with proper respect and refrained from changing it too much. Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be remarkable as an open-world action game, but it still has the story worthy of the most revered gangster movies. [12/2020, p.28]

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of mixed flavours. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's great. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's awful. Mixture of aged mechanics and amazing graphics, new voices, great old story and some added, yet bad storylines, make it not such a perfect remake. But it sure is worth your time, whether you are a fan of the original or not. The moral of the story survived in all its glory, just be sure to focus your attention to the details where Mafia used to and still shines the most.
