    Silently, like plenty of others i guess, i've been wanting to see Mafia 1 remade or atleast remastered, since i have played the other two games in the series, but not the one which started it all, and out of nowhere, to suprise of many gamers, in 2020 Take Two announced a remake and released it there soon after.

    Biggest strength of Mafia Definitive Edition is it's story. Writing is very    Silently, like plenty of others i guess, i've been wanting to see Mafia 1 remade or atleast remastered, since i have played the other two games in the series, but not the one which started it all, and out of nowhere, to suprise of many gamers, in 2020 Take Two announced a remake and released it there soon after.

    Biggest strength of Mafia Definitive Edition is it's story. Writing is very solid and you feel engrossed in the narrative, making you feel like you're really a part of an actual 1930's italian mob family. The performances of the actors are excellent aswell, which are translated into the well crafted cutscenes.
    The story for the very most part focuses on Tommy's life as a mobster, and very little as a family man, and i wished it did more on the latter. Apart from some scenes with his wife, you never see his children, so it somewhat takes away from seeing what Tommy actually has on stake with the way he lives.
    The story's structure can be somewhat confusing though, as the way chapters work, some plotholes can become quite noticeable, especially towards the end of the game, where a major turn of events happen off screen in how Salieri starts doing his business, that will change Tommy's outlook on the family and mobster life as a whole.
    During the story, there are a few instances of pretty big difficulty spikes, such as the mission where an armored cop vehicle chases you and which's turret you must disable, i had to lower the difficulty to lowest possible one to pass this section, it was just insane.

    Lost Heaven of course is a character of the game in it's own right, and Hangar 13 really did an admirable job recreating the time period of a major midwestern 1930's american city. There's good amount of detail put around every corner to make the game world feel believable and lived in. Whenever i was not in a hurry, i simply walked and took in the sights.
    Unfortunetly for all it's glamour, it doesnt make up for an exciting open world game to play around in. The map is very restrictive in where you can go, bushes around the roads will stop a tank in it's tracks, gates and fences around most places cant be scaled, trains cant be boarded and their stations are locked, despite NPC's roaming around on their platforms, and Tommy cant swim, so you cant reach something you see across a water body. Then again, that kind of lacking open world gameplay has been an issue in Mafia 2 and 3 aswell. The open world is there to mainly house the story.

    Gameplay is where things become more mixed. At it's core the gameplay in this remake is an evolution of Mafia 3. One of the most important things in Mafia series have been driving mechanics, and Mafia remake more/less nails the driving feel. I havent experienced such solid driving model in a non-racing game since...Mafia 2 actually. The cars in the game feel pretty grounded and like they actually are bound by laws of the physics, unlike how in most of other open world games that involve driving, where cars feel almost weightless, with floaty handling, looking at you Watch Dogs.
    The cover based combat as i've observed has upset some fans of the classic game, and i totally understand where they're coming from. You cant even manually crouch in the game, which could've enabled using cover on your own volition. The combat mechanics in the remake are far from leading in it's class aswell, they feel kinda stiff and there is a lack of feedback from guns. Not helping are the lackluster gun sound effects. There are also no non-lethal takedowns, i felt rather bad about myself when i needed to kill a poor maid and a wife at house where i just needed to steal something, so they wouldnt raise alarm. A dumb gameplay oversight on Hanager 13's part, aswell as narrative one, since killing innocent women conflicts with Tommy's character in another mission.
    Another annoyance is how you need to toggle the walking command, why was there no 'Hold Down' option ? It was so irritating. Same goes for sprinting, basic stuff like intuitive main movement mechanics should be an easy thing to do in this day and age.

    I got Mafia DE assuming it supports Windows 7, afterall it's a DX11 game, why shouldnt it, right ? Well upon firing up the game i discovered it doesnt officially support W7. Luckily it does support W7 atleast unffocially, meaning it runs on the dated, but still superior OS, as i found out thanks to some cool people on Steam forums. You just need to download some files and place them in the game's folder and happy gaming. Bad news is the game only runs in windowed mode on W7, robbing some of that immersion factor. Why, Hangar 13, cant you officially support a freakin DX11 game on Windows 7 ?

    With all that out of the way, i want to say that i still had a pretty decent time with Mafia Definitive Edition, the story, writing, performances of the cast and the recreation of the time period pulled the game through.    … Expand

    One of the best looking games with the absolute worst gameplay. The "open world" aspect is just a very pretty loading screen for you to go mission to mission.
    and No trams, no trains.

    The first mafia was a great game, I was the one who finiszem unfamous race for my friends and again we got this race in this part without skip option. I hated it back then and I hate it still in this game, and if that decision was made to stay true to original I don’t understand why Tommy is wearing leather jacket that doesn’t fit to the time and break immersion.     Very fast short story, where there is no 40% of what was in the original. Hey, why are the doors at the train station closed? It **** looks terrible and I can't even ride the train like it was in the original. In strongly fake game we were tricked again kkk... ))

    I'm disappointed that the game was made very linear, that there is no game world and there is a deserted freeride where nothing is available. 70% cutscene 30% game ruler, straight ruler...

    There are no professional developers in this game development studio like Hangar13!

    Great Game , sadly i haven´t played the original one yet but i have to say that this is one of the best games ive ever played. Great story a good graphic but sadly the game is pretty short, it would have been nice if there were a few more hours to play , if the game would be a bit longer i would give 10 points . I highly recommend this game :D

    I have played all MAFIA games before but this game is just AMAZING, i loved the gameplay, the story is actually the best one i have seen in any game, driving is kind of weird but there is nothing else that is really wrong with this game (besides the usual bugs that may or may not occur) .

    Story really good, but in gameplay is just mission after mission. All side quests from original version are missing and, no using train or tramline either or repairing cars. Original was better in gameplay and in history cause of the side quests.

    Bought this game, turned out to be a perversion and a short touch in no match from the original.
    The free city is dead completely.
    Mafia-3 is much better.

    This story ran through, did not see in it a detailed story, as it happened in the original 2000s.
    Walking in Freeride, I was upset to the limit where there is no game in this world, but only a small third-party 8 missions and damn why, Burton car mechanic in one abbreviated scene of all alone.
    Game **** Browser games are better than this crap!
    Series of games Mafia, fell to the bottom ...

    I finished the game completely in a short time along with the scripts in the walk.
    Strictly linear story, where press the keys as you are told.
    I laugh at the perplexity of how it can be called a game of "final edition" as this game is a "dummy" less than in the original story and no more on the game in 2021 emptiness ...

    This game is impossible to play twice, it is a very linear and short story.
    We need a train and tram patch + DLC this game is so bloody awesome but it lacks! Also 2 is a mess it needs an update!
    It would be nice to have a Don peppone DLC and expansion of freeride features

    The game is awful in every way. Dubbing and animations are rubbish, the AI is absolutely incapable, it just does a disproportionate amount of damage, while Team AI only runs in the field of fire. I see no reason why to buy this, because if you like the story or unique game mechanic    The worst game in the last 5 years, by far!

    Personally, I don't really want DLCs for this. But there are things that I want. Like ironing out the remaining huge bugs, implementing the still missing features (tram, train), adding more stuff to do in Free Ride, etc.    … Expand

    Having passed the game personally, I understand, it is a raw product, a straight linear story, only to play once.
    But damn it, why did they make Free ride a deceptive background picture, not a game in it?
    It's a shame, damn it.
    Hope it will correct in patch and make the game full.

    For what mode - Walk, if it is dead is not available for entertainment .
    Stupid game for 9 hours.

    First of all: never played the original Mafia game. While I really enjoyed the game, I'm also a bit disappointed. When I first played Mafia 2, that game was gorgeous for me and is still one of my favorite video-games of all time! Now Mafia DE is very similar in terms of Open Word, level and mission design. This ist NOT an open world game to be explored and freeroamed. The map is just aFirst of all: never played the original Mafia game. While I really enjoyed the game, I'm also a bit disappointed. When I first played Mafia 2, that game was gorgeous for me and is still one of my favorite video-games of all time! Now Mafia DE is very similar in terms of Open Word, level and mission design. This ist NOT an open world game to be explored and freeroamed. The map is just a beautiful scenery which allows the police chases and the driving in general to be non-linear and enjoyable. Now the game itself is very linear. You finish a mission, the game will just continue with the next one. This is no GTA or Mafia 3, where you need to manually start each mission. I personally think this is a good design choice, because it makes the story much more intense and is a good variety compared to all those 40hour grind open world games.
    I finished the story in 13h, which I'm totally fine with. But difficulty was way to unbalanced. I played on hard, at times the game was ridiculously hard, at other times it was too easy. E.g. The car chase with that heavy truck was ridiculously unnecessary. Enemy AI in this game is not good. Enemys seldom try to flank you, so there is no pressure on you and you can just stay in cover as long as you want. On the other hand AI seems to have some sort of magic aim bot being able to shoot you in the head if you leave cover for just milliseconds even after you just changed your position of cover. It's practically impossible not to loose health, no matter how cautious you are.
    One other critique is the story. While I really enjoyed that one, it was also pretty flat. Sure there were some highlights but somehow the emotions never REALLY showed up in the characters. There also wasn't anything near a plot-twist.
    Apart from that:
    -Music is great, Radio talking is interesting.
    -graphics are nice
    -Lost Heaven is a beautiful scenery -NPCs and physics are not as dumb/bad as in Cyberpunk
    -driving is actually fun (especially when you played Cyberpunk right before this game)
    -atmosphere is great
    -Besides the bad AI (though a bit better than the horrible Cyberpunk AI), the Gameplay was actually enjoyable (especially when you played Cyberglitch right before this game)
    -I had no major glitches, bugs or crashes (should be a matter of course, but you know after playing Cyberbug...)
    -the police is actually chasing you in cars. This doesn't seem to be very special I know. But as I said, I just played Cyberpunk... Conclusion:
    This is not Cyberpunk. This is actually a great game, though it has its flaws.    … Expand

    The developer just picked up and copied the not-quite-good way the original 2002 game. Made it not accurately and clumsily, the missions are shortened and cut in a rough way, even less than it was in the original version, there is no interaction of the tram with the train for the game.     While the game looks amazing, it feels incredibly outdated with the same repetitive missions and the whole "cover shooter" trope, which feels like we traveled 10 years back. The story was really nice to experience, but my whole experience was ruined by the gameplay. I get that It's a story, linear type of game, but that doesn't mean that the gameplay should be this stale.

    Beautiful graphics and great cinematics and thats about it. It will take you less than 10 hours to complete this game. It has simple game mechanics and difficulty. No side quests or any reason to explore the world, even less than in the distant original that there is no to use trains with trams in the walk.     I would put this game a score of 1. But I'll put five as I'm very upset and see that this is an empty, not finished game without a world of activism and a dead Free walk.
    I hope for a fair update of the game!

    Released a crude unfinished game in which only a silly compressed linear story and all the scenes are simplified to madness from the 2002 classics..

    the outside of town was a delight to drive through, beautiful scenery and colors, now it's very blunt

    Can't appreciate this game. This empty game has nothing inside the game world, but only video scenes and clumsy control. The story was also disfigured that they had no right to do so, not an exact gnarled copy from the original version, if it is The Definitive Edition.
    There's nothing new about the content, it's just everything's screwed up.

    The world of the game is only the scenery of the city and there is no communication with the city as a whole, it is created quickly as a background picture in general, but the game mechanism is absent in general.     If this game is put on straight line tracks, that I do not even have a choice in the action, but just press the keys and look the cutscene. The Visuals is amazing, From the cars to the cutscenes. The Sound effects are perfect, from the guns to the muscle car that i ended up playing a lot with due to the engine sounds. The Voice acting also is on spot. I can not say i encountered any bugs or performance issues during my PlayThrough. The Story was interesting, but nothing special. The ending was fantastic tho.     I loved the original mafia and this remake absolutely made me shed a tear for this classic. Graphics and gameplay are stunning and mission design is almost perfect. The tweaks on the story are ok and don't destroy the og feel. The only bad thing preventing this from getting a 10 is relatevely empty world in Free Ride without a lot of things to do.

    I'm just being redundant but Freeride is not free. You can do nothing, you can't save stolen cars in the garage, and side missions are gone, except for one or 2. Completely disappointed.

    Original 2002 Mafia is still better, graphics do not matter. Shame!

    The story seems no way as captivating as the original one and I have really hard time understanding the shooting mechanics whilst driving. It seems theres no free-aim option available until you crank the ram button. Before that it's just useless auto-aim and it really pisses me off. The story is ok I guess but like I said it's nothing like it used to be..

    Other than that it feel like the gameplay is on traintracks. It's really restricted what you can do. Some actions just seems to be disabled during parts of the mission.. for cinematic reasons? Just let me play ok?! Sneaking mechanics are there only when game thinks you need them, you can't active then in anyway so one must just get by with cover mechanics..

    As it stands, Mafia Definitive Edition I do not think it is worth the $40 price tag or even a $30 price tag. Unfortunately,If you can snag this game for $20 or under, I think it is worth it but as is, there are certainly better games at a $40 price point or even lower you could be sinking your time into.

    Overall I liked the game but reading the oficial page and watching all interviews with Blackman I feel like a bit disapointed.
    The mafia that you remember and more... well I certainly remember a lot more from the original one.

    One of the reasons i bought this game was the awesome train ride they showed in the trailer and all the NPC they showed walking about. Now i hear i can't use the train?? Another false advertising. Just like Snowrunner.

    In free game, it would be cool if they add some cool details a new update!
    for example:
    - using trams & trains for players
    - earn money and spend it
    - enter Restaurants, being able to eat food for health
    - customize vehicles in your garage
    - Police recognising license plates and clothing.
    Really wish the game was open world the only good thing about the game is the graphics and new actors and character models and of course the missions gave me so much memories but Tbh we all know this game is a huge letdown as you literally cannot do anything except from missions.

    The game is very short and if you played the original you will understand how in DE all missions are shortened and have an easy way of playing.

    DE Free mode is a dead world. I think it was in vain that they turned it on and the players became dissatisfied with this game in general.
    As always, the only hope is for mods from modders creators.

    Nearly all of the iconic missions that made this game so enjoyable have been changed to the worse: The airport mission Omerta with Frank is unrecognisable, the port mission - Lucky Bastard - is crippled to a point... its **** the prison mission - election campaign - is an easy peasy run through. Tram with train not to use. Summa summarum all the iconic missions of the original Mafia are there but they are empty, streamlined, shells.

    Probably the worst part is that the Lucas Bertone missions fully disappeared, and Yellow Pete - the secret gunshop - too. Tommy being able to arm himself up to the teeth before driving to the museum shoot out was probably the peak of the entire game (!) cause the game didnt tell you that!

    In short, this game is a total disappointment . Buy the original one, get some grapfic mods and enjoy the true and only Mafia game there ever was.

    If they would have simply stuck with Mafia 2-style gameplay and added the time period and very good graphics improvements they actually did get right here, they would have hit it out of the park . . .but this sadly misses at every turn, sad really, it could have been so much better . . .

    I am impressed with this game. I had very little expectations, it is so much better than Mafia 2. The story is great and the characters are special. Paulie is a great character. The graphics are better than Mafia 2 DE. There isn't much to do like GTA or other open world games but remember this is a remake of a 10 year old+ game. Enjoy.

    Apart from the antiquated mission design I really enjoyed my time. I was a big fan of the original and blown away by the graphics, especially the reflections (not raytraced).

    The shooting mechanics are nothing special, take cover and wait for the brain dead AI to make a move and gun them down but the story is well told and intriguing with a great orchestral score.     If you've played the original Mafia 1, and are hoping that the "Definitive Edition"would be an improvement on that, you'd be disappointed. The DE got rid of almost all the small things that made the original such a favorite to its fans- the side missions, the balance and difficulty of fighting the AI, tram/train for players, the original soundtracks, even the character arc of Tommy.If you've played the original Mafia 1, and are hoping that the "Definitive Edition"would be an improvement on that, you'd be disappointed.     Was hoping for Mafia 1 with modern graphics, this is not it.
    Ok, story is still great but the game is missing the feeling what original has, it is just mission after mission nonstop.
    All sidequests are missing and driving around city between them gone, no using train or tramline either or repairing cars.
    Original was better in gameplay and story.

I watched the movie scenes, pressed the buttons that said, shot in automatic sight, I had no choice of the shooting location as I wanted and no more, I could not replay in my opinion or move away from the story. In the city walk freeride mode, passed fast missions of cars and ran for UFO. Everything in the city is locked, I was notNo this game is shortened in many ways from the original.     I laugh at the publisher that could not properly copy the original version, that only everything was reduced to a minimum (in exchange to expand the gameplay) and the free city for a walk made it dead completely meaningless for the game. I was very sorry and I will not buy any more games from this company.

    The best game of my life just got a rework. I appreciate the work of hangar 13 that they had the idea to rework the game. And they did it well, and I still had teary eyes at the end of the game.

    But there are of course minuses
    1.Soundtrack/Radio - even though I said soundtrack was good but some of the Simunek tracks could stay, Jesse Harlin did really good but some of the Simunek soundtrack were truly a masterpiece, why couldn't they mix old and new tracks? Its a big question. Then there is radio part, damn that is really sad, only one radio song left from the OG "Mooche", new one are good as well, but not as good as in the OG, I don't know why they couldn't get them, didn't want to overpay or what, but I'm sure they could make an agreement and get at least 50% of the OG tracks and it would make the game aaa lot better.
    2.Lighting bugs, whenever you look at the wall or other static objects in different angle the lighting blinks and its suck, same issues were in Mafia 3, still can't fix that? Big minus.
    3.Missions too much scripted. For example mission in the port "You lucky bastard", you just have to stick to where the game says you to go, location is bounded all around, you can't explore the port like you could in the OG Mafia, its just narrow corridor, I want to decide on my own how I want to deal with certain mission but sadly the remake doesn't give you this choice. A big minus for me.

    Anyway with all this said its a pretty good game, but at the same time a pretty weak remake.I give solid 8 to this game.    … Expand

    Fight/Gunfight is a joke.
    Driving is a joke.
    Missions are very short.
    They keept somehow the storyline plot straight.
    Game graphic looks good.

    Вместе с тем, не могу отметить и существенные недостатки - игровая механика чувствуется очень старой (раз уж перелопачивали все, могли и над ней поработать); город сделан неплохо, пусть он однотипный и маленький, однако - отсутствие возможности поездить по нему в свободном доступе очень расстраивает; персонажи очень поверхностно раскрыты, к ним вроде бы есть сопереживание, а вроде бы и нет; очень скудный арсенал в игре - также, как и с игровой механикой, могли бы и добавить что-нибудь новое.

    This is travesty, distortion vr original version game.
    Non-existent ragdolls.
    Going in and out of the cover system is painful.
    Facial animations stuck on AI models when killed.
    Vehicle physics are somewhere between one of the worse GTA and Saint's Row.
    Early push removed some game features (i.e trains)

    Don't expect a good game, play it once for the story and never again.

    Released a quick game without making a deep plot and game extensions. The plot flew by at 10-11 o'clock without looking to the side. Walk ride mode - like a ghost town.

    This is a full-fledged, honest to God remake. Some changes to the story will upset hardcore fans, but I think this approach is absolutely justified. Even though this remake is not as amazing as new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7, it’s still a worthy update.

    The main difference between the remake and the original game is that the latter was outstanding for its time, while the Definitive Edition is “merely” good. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. What’s crucial here is the fact that Hangar 13 approached the original’s narrative with proper respect and refrained from changing it too much. Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be remarkable as an open-world action game, but it still has the story worthy of the most revered gangster movies. [12/2020, p.28]

    Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of mixed flavours. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's great. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's awful. Mixture of aged mechanics and amazing graphics, new voices, great old story and some added, yet bad storylines, make it not such a perfect remake. But it sure is worth your time, whether you are a fan of the original or not. The moral of the story survived in all its glory, just be sure to focus your attention to the details where Mafia used to and still shines the most.
