    Speaking of cut content... didn't they say it was expanded with some kind of new missions? One of them regarding a very important baseball game?
    The only baseball game I heard about was on the mission omerta on the radio and in a newspaper...
    By the way I'm missing the Lucas Bertone missions the classic way, with some dialog and a favour to do to him before telling us where the car is...    Speaking of cut content... didn't they say it was expanded with some kind of new missions? One of them regarding a very important baseball game?

    There's no Pitts store to buy guns.
    And not having the tram and train as a rideable options...
    Whats the point of selling a game as expanded in gameplay when it doesnt have half the content the original had?
    There are lots of car variants missing, no multiple way of completing the missions.
    Overall I liked the game but reading the oficial page and watching all interviews with Blackman I feel like a bit disapointed.
    The mafia that you remember and more... well I certainly remember a lot more from the original one.

    One of the reasons i bought this game was the awesome train ride they showed in the trailer and all the NPC they showed walking about. Now i hear i can't use the train?? Another false advertising. Just like Snowrunner.

    The game is linked to the plot without pause in free movement.
    The scenario is not identical to the original.
    In free game, it would be cool if they add some cool details a new update!
    for example:
    - using trams & trains for players
    - earn money and spend it
    - enter Restaurants, being able to eat food for health
    - customize vehicles in your garage
    - Police recognising license plates and clothing.
    Really wish the game was open world the only good thing about the game is the graphics and new actors and character models and of course the missions gave me so much memories but Tbh we all know this game is a huge letdown as you literally cannot do anything except from missions.
    Perhaps I will change the rating for the best if the game will be finalized.    … Expand

Polly is made a bastard who makes fun of Ralphie. It makes you sick just when you see it. Nothing to say. The main character Tommy is the same dumb **** both in voice acting and in behavior. The original hero was a simple guy, communicated in a simple way, behaved nobly. We all fell in love with him for that. In the new version - another plastic cool guy. And the most important thing. Graphics, mechanics, physics are all secondary. All people will endure, glitches, some bugs, flaws ... But you broke nostalgia. Plot. Characters. Music. Sounds ..... Mediocre.… Expand

    It lacks some gameplay, but in general, the story is good. If you are a fan of the Mafia series, go for it you won't regret it, but do not expect too much, it is a kinda monotonous game

    Ein cooles Remake eines Klassikers. Die Story ist spannend und anspruchsvoll zugleich, die Figuren sehr komplex, das Gameplay wirkt jedoch insgesamt etwas fahrig. Das Potenzial der offenen Spielwelt wird auch nicht genutzt. Die Open World existiert nur, sie hat keinerlei Funktion (7/10).

The plot is linear throughout the entire game cycle and does not look very pleasant in this form. Simplified missions, especially in the port to reduce the scenario and action events in general. (Sea Port, lucky bastard)

    Freeride, with nothing there. Unable to visit Tommy's house, all facilities are closed, trains / trams are not available as they were in the original, but pay attention that all NPCs interact well with trains/trams and this transport fills most of the game city. No Cash savings/spending. I'm not even talking about the fact that you did NOT add more features to the game world in the game of 2020.

    Mafia: Definitive Edition is a full remake of the original cult Mafia action-adventure game. In my opinion this game is missing several aspects of the original game, which I consider to be vital part of the overall Mafia experience. But more about that later. I want to start with the graphics. It is excellent, breathtaking even, with great colours, lighting and many details. I want to start with the graphics. It is excellent, breathtaking even, with great colours, lighting and many details. This new graphics suits the atmosphere of the original game very well. One more thing that I think this game did well was the historical radio announcement, baseball game etc. If only everything else was as good as that. Sadly it is not. The story was probably the biggest selling point of the original game and I am very disappointed that the remake was not able to retain the high standard. It does not start bad, the first few missions are pretty good, but then it starts to slip and the story diverges from the original more and more. What disappointed me the most is the ending, instead of the profound truth in the original we got pathetic generic Hollywood style nonsense about family. That was not the point of the Mafia at all, you understood nothing Hangar 13. Daniel Vavra (the creator of the original Mafia) himself says that he would rewrite most of the Mafia dialogues if he was doing the remake today, but he would keep the essential bits that make up the moral of the story. I cannot stress how important that statement is. From the gameplay perspective, there were big changes also. This game became a cover shooter and not a very good one at that. How is it possible that you cannot shoot blindly from the cover just as your enemies do. Also the enemies are all hard scripted, they are put in the game just for you to shoot them, without any thought given to why they are actually supposed to be there. The number of enemies is also more than doubled when compared to the original. Why are you only capable of carrying one small arm and only three magazines for it? Why is the path to your mission target always displayed on a map as if you were five years old and incapable of choosing the path for yourself? Next thing is driving and it is yet another disappointment. It went from a perfect simulation in the original game to a generic arcade in the remake. Also you cannot really enjoy driving, because most of the driving parts of the missions were just simply cut from the remake, which is a shame, because just cruising through the empty city at night after completing a hard mission was a big part of the overall Mafia experience. These things matter to me greatly. I do not even want to mention the stupid car chases, exploding barrels, ammo crates and so many other things that this remake butchered. The music is also changed significantly, the original radio tracks are all removed and replaced by other songs from the same era and often even from the same musician. Why? The mission music is a generic and I definitely prefer the atmospheric music of the original Mafia. If the original game was ever criticized for anything, it was usually a lack of secondary quests or additional content. And this remake instead of remedying that, cuts even the few missions from Lucas Bertone that were in the original game. There are no microtransactions, but predictably they were able to squeeze at least a bit of SJW propaganda. Talking about Sarah, she is another fine example of how the remake does not care about consequences and realism. In the original game the subject of you doing all the killing and being a gangster in context of your relationship with Sarah was discussed several times. In the remake she is seemingly oblivious to what you do for living, despite the fact that she works in the Salieri’s Bar herself. Anyway the main thing is that she can vote now. I think I know who she is voting for.

    Maybe all this came out a bit too harsh. Mafia: Definitive Edition is by no means a bad game, but it just is not Mafia. That did not surprised me since I did not expect Hangar 13 to make a good job, but what surprised me at least a little bit is how the vast majority of players are able to look past all this and still enjoy the game.     If you are a fan of the old one, this story is a mere shadow of the old game. Many small details that used to be signature of the old mafia, the one that started it all, are missing. Like, how dare they cut out Bertone? I    This was a great work done. Beautiful city, graphics, and tons of work done by actors. Beautiful product, cant say anything bad about it. But here comes a big BUT.

Like, how dare they cut out Bertone? I don't have the right to travel by tram? What about all various ways to beat the mission?. Why all cars have perfect balance to drift like pro cars? And another thing - the voices, and the amount of talking. Totally missed the old vibe.
    Free mode makes no sense except for 8 missions.
    Mini game of 2020 on 9 hours OMG.
    This is a real rating for such games 3-4/10

    If what you were looking for was a mafia 1 remake that feels like the recent mafia 2 remake, then you’re in for a treat but if you were looking for more you may be disappointed. What it does get right thought is the feel of a 1930’s american city, you will immediately feel the nostalgia growing as you weave in and out of traffic exploring this expansive city. You once again play as tommyIf what you were looking for was a mafia 1 remake that feels like the recent mafia 2 remake, then you’re in for a treat but if you were looking for more you may be disappointed. What it does get right thought is the feel of a 1930’s american city, you will immediately feel the nostalgia growing as you weave in and out of traffic exploring this expansive city. You once again play as tommy angelo in the final years of the prohibition and if you enjoyed the story of the original game, you will without a doubt enjoy the story here but this time with realistic graphics. sound effects are amazing with even smaller details like hearing the engine of your car cool down as turn it off, realistic sounding gun fire and you will get an immediate nostalgia boost from hearing the music come from the radio. the story is phenomenal as always and the comedic timing of some of the characters hits perfectly when it is needed whilst at the same time drawing you into the game’s world.

    onto the negatives. whilst the graphics of this game are impressive at times, especially in cutscenes, you will experience quite a bit of pop in when traveling at high speeds through the city and in grassy terrain. Some character models, whilst they do look amazing in cutscenes with you being able to see every hair follicle, most background NPC characters tend to look potatoey and derpy in gameplay sections looking like an assassins creed 2 remake copyright lawsuit waiting to happen. on the discussion of NPCs, enemy AI can come across as brain dead at times. constantly getting stuck behind walls in their vehicles, running out into the open as you’re opening fire on them or even running right up next to you like they thought they were invincible.

    Even with all of it’s faults, it is still an enjoyable game with a great story and a fun cast of characters. It just needed a few more weeks in the oven to iron out all of these problems before it released    … Expand

Der "Freie Fahrt" Modus bietet ebenso nicht mehr den gleichen Spaß, weil die Gegner, die man in der alten Version "einfach so zum Kampf auffordern" konnte, gibt es nicht mehr. Auch wenn ich es noch nicht 1:1 verglichen habe, die neue Version erscheint mir deutlich kürzer. Die "Filmszenen" deutlich zu viel und zu lang. Sie verhindern oft einfach dass man endlich weiter spielen kann. Dinge die in Mafia II ein Gewinn waren, fehlen leider, obwohl das doch die Chance gewesen wÀre, damit der alte Version noch etwas mehr Pfiff zu geben.

    Was hoping for Mafia 1 with modern graphics, this is not it.
    Ok, story is still great but the game is missing the feeling what original has, it is just mission after mission nonstop.
    All sidequests are missing and driving around city between them gone, no using train or tramline either or repairing cars.
    Original was better in gameplay and story.

Police? even in the classic mode is nothing compared to fun the pain in the ass (in the good sense) that was in the original one, chases are reduced to S. Secondary Lucas Bertone missions gone. Lockpicking minigame gone. The playground to shootouts are this generic boxes to find cover that sets the mood away, always a marker telling you what to do. Then there is this narrative all over the place, some dialogues are good, most of them cheesy and make no sense to the character depth. Although they tried to gave more story to characters they end up making desicions because of this new adjustments that don't adhere. The carefully crafted narrative missions like Visiting Rich People or Moonlighting are completely butchered and the developers didn't got it right. This game is mediocre and it reaches this status because of the excellent blueprint the original one provides. For those who just want a "meh game"that will be forgotten in 5 months this is your game. Lucky ones that didn't have this appreciation to the original one.     Isn't faithful to the original. Main characters are completely changed along with major plot points. Only a few songs actually return from the original soundtrack which is very disappointing. The freedom of the original level designs are long gone and replaced with linear shooting galleries. The checkpoint system is a disaster. It's also incredibly sad how they removed riding on trains and trolley cars. Even the original 2002 game had that. I just think it goes to show that the game needed more time in the oven. They tried being more faithful by adding in classic mode which is a good mode, but it was just little too late. On a good note the graphics are amazing. The game can be fun at times, especially the Hotel Corleone mission (one of the few missions that actually saw an improvement.) Overall, I can't see myself playing this for a year much less 18 years like I have the original. I think the biggest error was not consulting the original director. This game left me feeling uneasy, and made me feel like I was playing a plagiarized product.… Expand

    The problem with this remake is that it is no exactly the same as in 2002, apart from the beautiful graphics, there is nothing new, in the mode of "freeemode" at all limited, the same trams and trains.
    The lack of side missions and more activities    I never thought I would not recommend this game to someone, I always considered the classic Mafia of 2002 one of the great games of all time.

    * Tommy has been rewritten to be a cocky d-bag, complete opposite manners to Mafia 1.
    * Same horrid LOD issues on distant objects like buildings and vehicles like Mafia 3.
    * Terrible AI.
    * Graphics look similar to Mafia 2 with brightness turned up. "Amazing graphics" is hyperbole.
    * Pop-in galore, to the point of cars and trains popping in right in front of you.
    * Textures are generally low resolution even on maxed settings. Heavy dithering.
    * Sounds are generally weaker in quality than Mafia 1. Lack of environmental audio.
    * Atrociously poor lighting, the game will fade between odd shades of white, yellow and blue.
    * Lucas Bertone missions missing from story mode.
    * Fake pretense that tries to squeeze out the "coolness" of the characters to sound modern.
    * Simulation driving mode is akin to a regular arcade driving mode, realistic physics are gone.
    * No realistic suicide doors on cars like Mafia 1.
    * No car tuning options like Mafia 2.
    * Poor damage model on cars, smash into wall at full speed does nothing.
    * The slow, methodical gameplay of Mafia 1 that increased difficulty and immersion is gone.
    * Can't open bonnet to repair car like in Mafia 2.
    * Lockpicking minigame dumbed down.
    * Majority of music from the original is missing including all Mills Brothers and Belleville.
    * Terrible gun play and cover system. Really, beyond parody.
    * No world interactivity like turning on lights, faucets, flushing toilets etc.
    * Intrusive toddler level waypoint markers telling you what to do and where to go at all times.
    * Lack of bullet detail like entry holes on car tires.
    * Bugs, glitches and generally poor quality control of the map. Several map seams found.
    * No spoilers, but the game ends with a rap song. I'll let that one speak for itself.
    * Can't disable basic in-game features like HUD, health bar or mini map. Is this actually 2020?
    * No money system, can't buy anything.
    * "Tommy is not a trained soldier" well that was a lie.

    That is a lot of negative sentiment one might say. But the amount of positive reviews not even touching on the disconnect between what Hangar 13 marketed this to be and what it actually delivers honestly makes me worried for where this industry is going and I can't help to wonder about the thought process and motives behind of all these flawless masterpiece 10/10 reviews.

    For a newcomer, sure, this game might be fun for a couple of hours, albeit a pretty expensive fun. If you played the original, it is little more than a hollow shell. Moreover it is the literal definition of false advertising by Hangar 13 and 2K.    … Expand

    Tommy's character is butchered.
    Grapics is good. Gunsounds are awful. Car physics is ok-ish. Weapon wheel is abysmal abomination.
    Some bugs and bad optimization.
    Minus 1 additional point for wrong music tracks on credits and especially running man mission.

    At one time, the first part of "Mafia" was a great game that was remembered for a long time.
    Now "Mafia: Definitive Edition" is not that interesting anymore.
    This is a good remake of a once great game.
    But I didn't have much fun playing the Definitive Edition. I didn't feel nostalgia either.
    I don't see much point in such remakes. Better to create something new and high quality.

    A very linear game, the open world is very empty. You just play the plot on rails and there is nothing else to do.

    Graphics look good and it play okay, but the missions aren't really that creative or rich in variety.

    Aside of the butchered story, I think one thing that goes quite unnoticed is the amount of details/interactivity you had in the original vs the remake. No riding on transport, no choosing your own route to missions, no skill required whatsoever etc..

    City seems to have a grey/blue filter to it, and somehow seems more devoid of life than Mafia 1 was...even though it has way more detail. Traffic lights are missing. Also, looks big but is somehow smaller, with less space to drive, and its bushes are made of titanium.

    Cars have no textures, just the usual "GTAV" thing that most open world games do these days : vertex paint. Basically means game paints the car whichever color you want with no texture cost. Thats why they are all clean and without much detail.

    There is no permanence to the traffic like in Mafia 1, things vanish like in GTA, early cars don't show up in freeride mode once the game is finished. They are simply replaced by 1938 vehicles

    Story wise great. Detail great.. Just a shame you dont let us look at the detail as free roam mode had no interiors to explore.. No trains that work. All that time and effort those game designers went to.. And for what for them to be closed in free roam

    This is not a real open world game since you can not do nothing other than taking a mission.
    this isnt 2002 anymore- you should have made some changes in game play and make it a real open world game and not only dramatic graphic remastering.

    Sure the graphics are nice and all but the game has been totally dumbed down from the original. Why even bother with nice graphics when all you do is looking at the minimap to see where to go?     A game for one passage, you don't want to play more in a linear plot with cutscenes. Shooting weapons without aiming is not a simulation of a gunfight game, but **** In free mode, it makes no sense to waste time, everything is locked from players, these vehicles will not carry you by tram with train, one bar Salieri which is also a mute object.

    Damn it, I'm not sorry to give money for the game, I'll give more, but the point is to get the quality and interest of the game as a whole!    … Expand

    This is a full-fledged, honest to God remake. Some changes to the story will upset hardcore fans, but I think this approach is absolutely justified. Even though this remake is not as amazing as new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7, it’s still a worthy update.

    The main difference between the remake and the original game is that the latter was outstanding for its time, while the Definitive Edition is β€œmerely” good. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. What’s crucial here is the fact that Hangar 13 approached the original’s narrative with proper respect and refrained from changing it too much. Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be remarkable as an open-world action game, but it still has the story worthy of the most revered gangster movies. [12/2020, p.28]

    Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of mixed flavours. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's great. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's awful. Mixture of aged mechanics and amazing graphics, new voices, great old story and some added, yet bad storylines, make it not such a perfect remake. But it sure is worth your time, whether you are a fan of the original or not. The moral of the story survived in all its glory, just be sure to focus your attention to the details where Mafia used to and still shines the most.
