    Good but not great game.

    This is what I like about this game: 1. The story is excellent 2. The game has good graphics 3. Voice acting and music are excellent 4. Driving mechanics are cool 5. Support for ultra wide monitors 6. Good length campaign What I do not like about the game: 1. AI is bad 2. Animations are average 3. Glitches through out the game like missing textures    Good but not great game.

    I just finished the campaign and I really liked how the story was preserved like in the original game. The graphics is not bad, there are very nice reflections, pretty nice lighting, great effects and sounds as well. I love especially car engine sounds and when you turn off the engine, you can hear even the car cooling down. However, the game feels pretty much blurry like in Mafia 3I just finished the campaign and I really liked how the story was preserved like in the original game. However, the game feels pretty much blurry like in Mafia 3 despite I am running the game at 4K resolution, so I have to use a 3rd party tool for image sharpening to improve the image quality. Overall the game looks much better than the original mafia, BUT it is not as good as the game from 2002. In original game, you had more things to do. You had a tutorial which helped you how to play, in story you had very nice Lucas Bertone missions and after you finished the game, you could play extreme ride. These parts are unfortunately missing in the new remake. The campaign is shortened a little bit and you can finish the game much sooner what is pity. You can even play the game with Czech dubbing which is also amazing!

    There are some details which I miss compared to the old game. For example, you do not have your cars parked behind the Salieri's bar and instead you have stupid and very simple list of cars like in Mafia II for example. I would recommend you to buy this game, it is very nice, but I can give it 7 or 8 points out of 10. I do believe that there will be some updates or DLC's which will improve the game, but old Mafia is still the king. That game deserves easily 10/10!    … Expand

    Buen juego, gran remake con gráficos actuales. Una historia tremenda en una sucesión de misiones en donde, como mucho, tendremos coleccionables de revistas pero nada de misiones secundarias. Variedad de armas y coches (dificiles de controlar), policía bastante sensible a poco que vayas deprisa, a veces me ha parecido un poco tosco en los tiroteos.     Mafia Definitive Edition is a third person story driven shooter with linear missions. It is situated in a fictional city of Lost Heaven based on real-life Chicago in 1930'.

    This game is a Remake because it is very different from Mafia released in 2002. 4/5 Story is very linear and the missions are diverse. Few, unique and interesting characters.     3/5 Gameplay has a lot of driving, hiding and killing. Movement is wonky and the camera is rather loose. Cars are fun.

    2/5 Replay value is very low for Story, decent for Free Ride. Game has many collectibles but they don't matter much.

    4/5 Graphics are quite sharp, a living city and rather odd animations. Nice effects, great immersion, a decent optimization.

    5/5 Music offers old-timey songs, great voiceovers and good effects. Radio adds an extra layer of immersion with events.

    Some hits from the original are missing.

    Verdict 7/10

    Story is rich and gets pretty interesting at times but takes risky turns unlike in the original, it surprises a classic player like me. It's got various mission objectives, fun driving in cars and a decent cover shooting system. World is big and full of collectibles. The ending conclusion didn't make any sense when comparing the character development and what they did then.    … Expand

    I have really enjoyed it, even though I never played original Mafia. It is not an outstanding game, but for a one-time experience it is worth it.

    Вердикт - стоит уделить немного времени холодным осенним вечером и вместе с обычным неудачником стать свидетелем жизни и смерти высоких чинов полиции, продажных прокуроров и трусливых священников.
    ДОСТОИНСТВА:
    Отличная лицевая анимация. Катсцены смотрятся как один фильм. Отличная озвучка. Переработанные модели автомобилей, некоторые предметы разрушаются на ура.
    НЕДОСТАТКИ:
    Ужасное управление и поведение любой машины на дороге. Мелкие баги.    … Expand

This an example of how to make a mess having an constructed and perfect ending already done and killing it. So instead of 10 I guess this is a 7.

И теперь, получив опыт игры в первую часть, скажу вот что - работа по созданию ремейка действительно хороша, в игре неплохая графика, хардкорное управление автомобилями, интересные миссии, и в целом, я доволен тем, во что поиграл.

    Вместе с тем, не могу отметить и    Игра неплоха. Я не застал первую часть мафии и в свое время поиграл лишь в прекрасную вторую часть и отвратительную третью. И теперь, получив опыт игры в первую часть, скажу вот что - работа по созданию ремейка действительно хороша, в игре неплохая графика, хардкорное управление автомобилями, интересные миссии, и в целом, я доволен тем, во что поиграл.

    Вместе с тем, не могу отметить и существенные недостатки - игровая механика чувствуется очень старой (раз уж перелопачивали все, могли и над ней поработать); город сделан неплохо, пусть он однотипный и маленький, однако - отсутствие возможности поездить по нему в свободном доступе очень расстраивает; персонажи очень поверхностно раскрыты, к ним вроде бы есть сопереживание, а вроде бы и нет; очень скудный арсенал в игре - также, как и с игровой механикой, могли бы и добавить что-нибудь новое.

    At one time, the first part of "Mafia" was a great game that was remembered for a long time.
    Now "Mafia: Definitive Edition" is not that interesting anymore.
    This is a good remake of a once great game.
    But I didn't have much fun playing the Definitive Edition. I didn't feel nostalgia either.
    I don't see much point in such remakes. Better to create something new and high quality.

    Mafia DE je nádherný remake. Zažijete znovu příběh taxikáře Tomáše a to v perfektní grafice, nově vymodelovaném městě Lost Heaven, až mi je líto, jak málo toho nová definitivní edice nabízí. Jeden z Legendárních herních příběhů dokážete sloupnout za několik hodin. Nezastaví vás ani nejtěžší obtížnost a jakmile hru původní znáte, není tady ani žádná nová výzva. Město je nádherné a živé,Mafia DE je nádherný remake. Zažijete znovu příběh taxikáře Tomáše a to v perfektní grafice, nově vymodelovaném městě Lost Heaven, až mi je líto, jak málo toho nová definitivní edice nabízí. Jeden z Legendárních herních příběhů dokážete sloupnout za několik hodin. Nezastaví vás ani nejtěžší obtížnost a jakmile hru původní znáte, není tady ani žádná nová výzva. Město je nádherné a živé, veškerá vozidla vypadají jako opravdová a tváře lidí jsou bezvadné. Spousta věcí ale ve hře chybí a nakonec na mě působí prostě prázdně.

    Этот ремейк не будут вспоминать спустя 20 лет, но тем не менее он хорош. Сюжет по-прежнему увлекает, геймплей приятный. Даже нравится размеренно кататься из точки А в точку Б.

Затем очень криво расставлены аптечки, в какой то миссии их 10000, а в какой то вообще блин нет, хотя очень нужны ( например галерея) . Баги с нпс ваще норма, если ты мирного убиваешь, и он, допустим стоял близко к стене, то скорее всего он наполовину войдет в стену... либо нпс просто стоят тупят, крч мрак с нпс в этой игре на самом деле. Еще обещали, что противники будут очень живо реагировать на попадания, так вот херня это все, с томика стреляешь им в грудак, похеру абсолютно, стоят дальше как ни в чем не бывало и палят по вам, то же относится и к конечностям , импакт от попаданий минимален. Мотоцикл , кстати, очень плохо сделан в том плане, что, если ты врезаешься в условный объект на огромной скорости, то ты даже не слетаешь с мотоцикла, продолжаешь как ни в чем не бывало на нем сидеть. Крч много на самом деле проблем в игре, но в целом неплохо , сюжет + атмосфера+ тема итальянской мафии в США вывозят ее.… Expand

    If what you were looking for was a mafia 1 remake that feels like the recent mafia 2 remake, then you’re in for a treat but if you were looking for more you may be disappointed. What it does get right thought is the feel of a 1930’s american city, you will immediately feel the nostalgia growing as you weave in and out of traffic exploring this expansive city. You once again play as tommyIf what you were looking for was a mafia 1 remake that feels like the recent mafia 2 remake, then you’re in for a treat but if you were looking for more you may be disappointed. What it does get right thought is the feel of a 1930’s american city, you will immediately feel the nostalgia growing as you weave in and out of traffic exploring this expansive city. You once again play as tommy angelo in the final years of the prohibition and if you enjoyed the story of the original game, you will without a doubt enjoy the story here but this time with realistic graphics. sound effects are amazing with even smaller details like hearing the engine of your car cool down as turn it off, realistic sounding gun fire and you will get an immediate nostalgia boost from hearing the music come from the radio. the story is phenomenal as always and the comedic timing of some of the characters hits perfectly when it is needed whilst at the same time drawing you into the game’s world.

    onto the negatives. whilst the graphics of this game are impressive at times, especially in cutscenes, you will experience quite a bit of pop in when traveling at high speeds through the city and in grassy terrain. Some character models, whilst they do look amazing in cutscenes with you being able to see every hair follicle, most background NPC characters tend to look potatoey and derpy in gameplay sections looking like an assassins creed 2 remake copyright lawsuit waiting to happen. on the discussion of NPCs, enemy AI can come across as brain dead at times. constantly getting stuck behind walls in their vehicles, running out into the open as you’re opening fire on them or even running right up next to you like they thought they were invincible.

    Even with all of it’s faults, it is still an enjoyable game with a great story and a fun cast of characters. It just needed a few more weeks in the oven to iron out all of these problems before it released    … Expand

    Story really good, but in gameplay is just mission after mission. All side quests from original version are missing and, no using train or tramline either or repairing cars. Original was better in gameplay and in history cause of the side quests.

I never played the original early 2000 game but i've played the mafia 2 and 3 and i must say i play this game mainly to enjoy the story and it shows. Set at 1930's during probihition era, follows a taxi driver then involved at mafia activity. The story is really good because i love gangster movies. But other than stories this game is rather bland, the "free roam" mode doesn't have nothing to do beside roaming the city and finding collectibles. The bugs and glitches in this game is quite bad too. If you like mafia series especially the story, give this game a go and you will enjoy a really good story.… Expand

I watched the movie scenes, pressed the buttons that said, shot in automatic sight, I had no choice of the shooting location as I wanted and no more, I could not replay in my opinion or move away from the story. In the city walk freeride mode, passed fast missions of cars and ran for UFO. Everything in the city is locked, I was notNo this game is shortened in many ways from the original. But what the heck is this unfinished game released or is it a game in the BETA version and you can wait for an update BUT I don't see any information in general anywhere!??

I've also noticed that there are a lot of things you could do in the original and not so, I think if you call a remake game that at least has the same content as the original at least.     While the game looks amazing, it feels incredibly outdated with the same repetitive missions and the whole "cover shooter" trope, which feels like we traveled 10 years back. The story was really nice to experience, but my whole experience was ruined by the gameplay. I get that It's a story, linear type of game, but that doesn't mean that the gameplay should be this stale.

I hated it back then and I hate it still in this game, and if that decision was made to stay true to original I don’t understand why Tommy is wearing leather jacket that doesn’t fit to the time and break immersion.     It lacks some gameplay, but in general, the story is good. If you are a fan of the Mafia series, go for it you won't regret it, but do not expect too much, it is a kinda monotonous game

Ангар, молодцы, но хочу сказать в игре много пафоса и зациклиности, а так же мало деталей в прогулке почти не чего делать, так же много скриптов в сюжете. Я конечно не знаю почему нельзя ездить на надземнем метро и трамваях... Я проходил оригинал много раз и хочу сказать что годно. Персонажи раскрыты вполне. Но выше перечисленные минусы не дают мне поставить 10 баллов... Пофиг на мыло главное атмосфера есть и халтуры от вас нет.… Expand

    this isn't enough. You did a great job but this wasn't enough. You sticked to original game but this was too much. I recommend this game who wants to play mafia franchise but not worth this price.

    Ein cooles Remake eines Klassikers. Die Story ist spannend und anspruchsvoll zugleich, die Figuren sehr komplex, das Gameplay wirkt jedoch insgesamt etwas fahrig. Das Potenzial der offenen Spielwelt wird auch nicht genutzt. Die Open World existiert nur, sie hat keinerlei Funktion (7/10).

    Biggest strength of Mafia Definitive Edition is it's story. Writing is very solid and you feel engrossed in the narrative, making you feel like you're really a part of an actual 1930's italian mob family. The performances of the actors are excellent aswell, which are translated into the well crafted cutscenes.
    The story for the very most part focuses on Tommy's life as a mobster, and very little as a family man, and i wished it did more on the latter. Apart from some scenes with his wife, you never see his children, so it somewhat takes away from seeing what Tommy actually has on stake with the way he lives.
    The story's structure can be somewhat confusing though, as the way chapters work, some plotholes can become quite noticeable, especially towards the end of the game, where a major turn of events happen off screen in how Salieri starts doing his business, that will change Tommy's outlook on the family and mobster life as a whole.
    During the story, there are a few instances of pretty big difficulty spikes, such as the mission where an armored cop vehicle chases you and which's turret you must disable, i had to lower the difficulty to lowest possible one to pass this section, it was just insane.

    Lost Heaven of course is a character of the game in it's own right, and Hangar 13 really did an admirable job recreating the time period of a major midwestern 1930's american city. There's good amount of detail put around every corner to make the game world feel believable and lived in. Whenever i was not in a hurry, i simply walked and took in the sights.
    Unfortunetly for all it's glamour, it doesnt make up for an exciting open world game to play around in. The map is very restrictive in where you can go, bushes around the roads will stop a tank in it's tracks, gates and fences around most places cant be scaled, trains cant be boarded and their stations are locked, despite NPC's roaming around on their platforms, and Tommy cant swim, so you cant reach something you see across a water body. Then again, that kind of lacking open world gameplay has been an issue in Mafia 2 and 3 aswell. The open world is there to mainly house the story.

    Gameplay is where things become more mixed. At it's core the gameplay in this remake is an evolution of Mafia 3. One of the most important things in Mafia series have been driving mechanics, and Mafia remake more/less nails the driving feel. I havent experienced such solid driving model in a non-racing game since...Mafia 2 actually. The cars in the game feel pretty grounded and like they actually are bound by laws of the physics, unlike how in most of other open world games that involve driving, where cars feel almost weightless, with floaty handling, looking at you Watch Dogs.
    The cover based combat as i've observed has upset some fans of the classic game, and i totally understand where they're coming from. You cant even manually crouch in the game, which could've enabled using cover on your own volition. The combat mechanics in the remake are far from leading in it's class aswell, they feel kinda stiff and there is a lack of feedback from guns. Not helping are the lackluster gun sound effects. There are also no non-lethal takedowns, i felt rather bad about myself when i needed to kill a poor maid and a wife at house where i just needed to steal something, so they wouldnt raise alarm. A dumb gameplay oversight on Hanager 13's part, aswell as narrative one, since killing innocent women conflicts with Tommy's character in another mission.
    Another annoyance is how you need to toggle the walking command, why was there no 'Hold Down' option ? It was so irritating. Same goes for sprinting, basic stuff like intuitive main movement mechanics should be an easy thing to do in this day and age.

    I got Mafia DE assuming it supports Windows 7, afterall it's a DX11 game, why shouldnt it, right ? Well upon firing up the game i discovered it doesnt officially support W7. Luckily it does support W7 atleast unffocially, meaning it runs on the dated, but still superior OS, as i found out thanks to some cool people on Steam forums. You just need to download some files and place them in the game's folder and happy gaming. Bad news is the game only runs in windowed mode on W7, robbing some of that immersion factor. Why, Hangar 13, cant you officially support a freakin DX11 game on Windows 7 ?

    With all that out of the way, i want to say that i still had a pretty decent time with Mafia Definitive Edition, the story, writing, performances of the cast and the recreation of the time period pulled the game through.    … Expand

    Don't think I'm some kind of an old*** who only loves old things and never appreciates new stuff (I loved COD remastered, RE2 was amazing and was even better than some new games). But this, it neither feels like a new game nor it has the feeling of the old good mafia. Graphics looks decent but the light has ruined everything for me.    This game does not feel as good as the original one.

I can't explain what exactly happened but it lost some kind of the NY ambient even the second mafia or the original game had (I guess even first division has it at some point). I also didn't like shooting not in terms of aiming or recoil but what AI is doing during the fight: they just do several shots then wait for you to shoot them (it has nothing to do with difficulty because I played on the classic one). Also, driving has changed and, again, it has lost something that was giving me such satisfaction and good feedback back in the days. I don't think that I should talk about the story because everyone knows how amazingly done it is, the only thing I noticed is that characters lack something. Maybe it's because they cut the content that also at some point was supposed to introduce characters to us and fill the story a little bit more.

    Overall this game is GOOD, especially if you haven't played Mafia games before. Otherwise, it will disappoint you because it's not as entertaining as Mafia II, but neither has that feeling of the story as the original game does.

    That's my subjective opinion about the game and I DO KNOW that it's a remake not remastered and it is not supposed to be the same game but as I said before it doesn't feel like a new game for a person, who played the original one.

    P.S. I know that the devs probably didn't have that much money to create a NEW game but they should understand that making remakes is a risky business.

    P.P.S. Night city looks really amazing and nights is probably the best thing this game has. If this game had a "night only" option, I wouldn't even care about the rest.

También vemos que arraiga los problemas de su tercera entrega que estaba llena de bugs y errores como la iluminación a la hora de jugarlo. Igual no tiene la misma cantidad de defectos técnicos pero si que arrastra el mismo problema. Por lo demás es un juego de una duración acorde con una jugabilidad no muy destacada pero justa para su disfrute.     + It's still Mafia I plot. Despite Hangar 13 actions to massacre our boy.

    - Driving. Bad. Cars are almost totally similar in driving. No inertia. Perfect turning. City lives according to its own rules and mostly ignores your movement. People crossing streets, while you're driving on them, just to jump 3 meters back right before your car.
    - Shooting. Bad. And I recommend easy game mode. On classic enemies will not react to your hits, so you will have a feeling that you're shooting at T-800s or playing MMOFPS. Way funnier to run into CQB on easy, just as deadly. Covers are bad too. Not comfortable. AI sees your through the wall and start shooting/throwing in advance. Paulie and Sam are not only immortal now, but immaterial, bullets go right through them into your skull.
    - Railroading. Original game has possibilities for different play styles in some missions. You could stealth, shoot, trick your way through. In remake you can't shoot at some moments and can't abstand from aggressive play in others. Some things are cut out from the original too.
    - Bugs. For example, if you get perfectly aligned with enemy in game X, Y or even Z-axis you will die instantly no matter the obstacles (walls, cars). However, this didn't really make me angry. But after such deaths, or just deaths, or failing an objective (like, defending a truck) you will restart at nearest checkpoint and 100% will not have such guns and ammo as at the moment of death (health remains exactly the same) and 10% that you will progress through the story. I deliberately said nearest checkpoint not the last one. So, it's clear how poorly this thing is coded. And this did make me angry.

    Things that I feared, but they turned to be ok.
    * Paulie is a Shrek. Never felt so during the game. Actor did a great job, Paulie is way more likeable than in original.
    * Red exploding barrels. Just a few of them, and they do come in handy when playing on classic difficulty.    … Expand

I want to start with the graphics. It is excellent, breathtaking even, with great colours, lighting and many details. One more thing that I think this game did well was the historical radio announcement, baseball game etc. If only everything else was as good as that. Sadly it is not. The story was probably the biggest selling point of the original game and I am very disappointed that the remake was not able to retain the high standard. It does not start bad, the first few missions are pretty good, but then it starts to slip and the story diverges from the original more and more. What disappointed me the most is the ending, instead of the profound truth in the original we got pathetic generic Hollywood style nonsense about family. That was not the point of the Mafia at all, you understood nothing Hangar 13. Daniel Vavra (the creator of the original Mafia) himself says that he would rewrite most of the Mafia dialogues if he was doing the remake today, but he would keep the essential bits that make up the moral of the story. I cannot stress how important that statement is. From the gameplay perspective, there were big changes also. This game became a cover shooter and not a very good one at that. How is it possible that you cannot shoot blindly from the cover just as your enemies do. Also the enemies are all hard scripted, they are put in the game just for you to shoot them, without any thought given to why they are actually supposed to be there. The number of enemies is also more than doubled when compared to the original. Why are you only capable of carrying one small arm and only three magazines for it? Why is the path to your mission target always displayed on a map as if you were five years old and incapable of choosing the path for yourself? Next thing is driving and it is yet another disappointment. It went from a perfect simulation in the original game to a generic arcade in the remake. Also you cannot really enjoy driving, because most of the driving parts of the missions were just simply cut from the remake, which is a shame, because just cruising through the empty city at night after completing a hard mission was a big part of the overall Mafia experience. These things matter to me greatly. I do not even want to mention the stupid car chases, exploding barrels, ammo crates and so many other things that this remake butchered. The music is also changed significantly, the original radio tracks are all removed and replaced by other songs from the same era and often even from the same musician. Why? The mission music is a generic and I definitely prefer the atmospheric music of the original Mafia. If the original game was ever criticized for anything, it was usually a lack of secondary quests or additional content. And this remake instead of remedying that, cuts even the few missions from Lucas Bertone that were in the original game. There are no microtransactions, but predictably they were able to squeeze at least a bit of SJW propaganda. Talking about Sarah, she is another fine example of how the remake does not care about consequences and realism. In the original game the subject of you doing all the killing and being a gangster in context of your relationship with Sarah was discussed several times. In the remake she is seemingly oblivious to what you do for living, despite the fact that she works in the Salieri’s Bar herself. Anyway the main thing is that she can vote now. I think I know who she is voting for.

    Maybe all this came out a bit too harsh. Mafia: Definitive Edition is by no means a bad game, but it just is not Mafia. That did not surprised me since I did not expect Hangar 13 to make a good job, but what surprised me at least a little bit is how the vast majority of players are able to look past all this and still enjoy the game.     A very linear game, the open world is very empty. You just play the plot on rails and there is nothing else to do.

    Graphics look good and it play okay, but the missions aren't really that creative or rich in variety.

Больше всего не понравилось, что Томми не самВ целом, нормальный ремейк. Что и можно было ожидать, увеличили количество экранного времени у второстепенных персонажей, и это хорошо, добавили больше деталей и т.д. Но не понравились изменения характеров персонажей и их мотивации, мне кажется, можно было добавить больше бекграунда Паули и Сэму сохранив их суть, какой она была в оригинале. Больше всего не понравилось, что Томми не сам решил не убивать шлюху и последние слова Сэма и Тома. Какая блядь семья, че он несет вообще? Вито и Джо, кстати, в последнем ролике очень рофляно нарисовали, я покекал. Некоторые миссии стали менее запоминающимися из-за их урезания (Омерта, ограбление банка), в некоторых моментах переборщили с голивудщиной. Физика машин стала заметно лучше со времен третьей части, но все равно есть такое ощущение будто они подражают той физике, что была в первой и второй части, а не делают собственный движок. Гонку я, кстати, не смог пройти на симуляторном режиме, хотя в оригинале могу с первого раза, даже на непатченной версии. В плане сложности игра иногда дает просраться, но касаемо перестрелок это достигается искусственно, потому что враги умирают после примерно 7-ми попаданий в тело (или одного в голову), но когда в них попадает пуля им на это абсолютно все равно, они как шли и стреляли, так и продолжат это делать. Касаемо графики, дело не особо улучшилось со времен третьей части, она все такая же убогая и страшная. Уж не знаю, как можно было так ухайдакать движок второй мафии, но как есть так есть. Короче, сохранили и подчеркнули некоторые фишки, мелочи и особенности из оригинала и упустили другие.… Expand

Either they didn't play the original game, or they are little sjw using logical fallacies - to attack people for constructive criticism. Most people probably won't play the original and that game will fade away. While it is much better game, even today! And it doesn't look even that bad!

    I also i heavily dislike community of this game and even nowadays gaming subculture. If you say anything negative, they will tell you go play something else. Even if it is true and you have circle jerk yourselves and be fake. Otherwise people will attack you!

    I would say go play original, if you didn't. It is a masterpiece!!!

    Story: they changed original characters and dialogues, even scenes! Paulie looks like Shrek and both look like they don't have any experience. In the original characters were older. They mixed some lines in dialogue and things came out at wrong moment, it was weird. I like original story much more, than in this game!

    They removed lucas bertone missions, but you have to find 5 cars in freeride, which is boring. Previously he gave you little fun sub-quests.

    There are some interesting details about events in the original story, which is interesting, previously player could imagine it, or guess. I like it in new game, since it is remake.

    Dialogues: They are not bad, but there are some things, which are dumb like: Tom just gets started in family and Salieri, he himself says he wants revenge on guys, which destroyed his taxi, why it was most powerful mafia in the city. In the original, salieri ordered Paulie and Tom to destroy their cars as initiation test, which is more believable. There are things like this in the game.

    There are some funny quotes, but otherwise... Sometimes characters tell same thing twice, happened in previous game too, not big deal.

    Soundtrack: original soundtrack is absolutely amazing and more dramatic, i dislike they replaced it.

    Cutscenes: in original they are 1000 times more dramatic and more EPIC!

    Driving: terrible driving model, in original they tried to simulate realism. While in new game, driving is unrealistic and car is sliding. Cars suffer from understeering and than enter uncontrollable slide, which is impossible to correct many times. It is like driving on ice constantly... I completed race mission on the first trial in original, but in this game it took me 3 hours, because my car lose control, not that it would be difficult, it is not! Also they made it so opponents will crash right before you and you crash too - idiotic...

    Auto aim when driving yuck! Car moves when i hit it with baseball LOL.

    Environment: salieri's yard looks good, but whole city is too clean on that era. There were neon signs at that time, but i liked more original, now you have that on every corner. Also all cars are shinning and look like new.

    Combat: melee is annoying, if you attack first sometimes it doesn't hit, yet he counters, which has no counter. Otherwise you have to press alt quickly to dodge.

    Cops: they get called instantly, which looks weird, in old mafia police office would have to find a telephone to report incident!

    City: they made city more accessible, but game doesn't take you through city as much as before, at least you don't have to drive back each time, which was excessive in old mafia. Everywhere are roadblocks LOL and in first mission car chase is kinda lame, but so it was in the original. Except you could take out wheels, but you wouldn't hit anybody basically...

    UI: there are a lot of unnecessary ui elements, like objective, which kills immersion. Previously you could always press f1 for objective and they tell you what to do so... Also healthbar is huge and speed-o-meter doesn't look old from that era and i dislike minimap next to it. It even shows you path to the objective, so you don't have to remember path yourself...

    You choose weapons by weapon wheel and it sucks as usual, also 12 works tho i think, but for other things...

    Graphics: graphic with red taint, i don't care. It looks great, how ever they didn't recreate era best, city is too clean, sky is white bright, instead of blue... It is in details... Also it is little bit blurry on max details, but that's normal, probably bad aliasing and will be better in near future i think. Yet old game looks more realistic in a way i think. Cars are also too shiny, every car in the city...

    Freeride: design of missions is moronic, you don't know first how to finish that optimally, even if you were pro, some missions are impossible to do on the first time, now matter how good you play. So you have to restart like 10 times, if you do only one mistake, because car suffer from heavy understeer, you lose to rng tram, or car...    … Expand

It seems theres no free-aim option available until you crank the ram button. Before that it's just useless auto-aim and it really pisses me off. The story is ok I guess but like I said it's nothing like it used to be..

    Other than that it feel like the gameplay is on traintracks. It's really restricted what you can do. Some actions just seems to be disabled during parts of the mission.. for cinematic reasons? Just let me play ok?! Sneaking mechanics are there only when game thinks you need them, you can't active then in anyway so one must just get by with cover mechanics..

    Disappointment. New Scenario Mafia1 looks very weak, so it's easy weak for 2020. Nothing is playable other than a limited scenario that hasn't even improved in this game, on the contrary, it is a reduction and simplification of the game that does not improve in general terms...

    Freeride, with nothing there. Unable to visit Tommy's house, all facilities are closed, trains / trams are not available as they were in the original, but pay attention that all NPCs interact well with trains/trams and this transport fills most of the game city. No Cash savings/spending. I'm not even talking about the fact that you did NOT add more features to the game world in the game of 2020.

    This game is impossible to play twice, it is a very linear and short story.
    We need a train and tram patch + DLC this game is so bloody awesome but it lacks! Also 2 is a mess it needs an update!
    It would be nice to have a Don peppone DLC and expansion of freeride features

    At the same time this game improves on the enemy spam and bs insta-kills by enemies you cannot even see or aim at. The ability to skip driving is also a very welcome change.

    I am giving it a 6/10 however, because the controls are designed to be played on a console, not PC. The key layout is very strange, and you cannot double bind keys.    … Expand

    - персонаж преступно долго умирает, драматично падая на землю, зачем почему? Дико тормозит темп игры, ничего кроме раздражения и духоты не вызывает.
    - в игру надобавляли всяких доп. механик: взлом замков, угоны, таскания тел и прочее, которые бы пригодились для открытого мира, мир есть, но открыт ли он? Игра кидает игрока от миссии к миссии и изучать город нет возможности, да и нужно ли? Нет он пуст, а следовательно и механики практически полностью не юзабельны.
    - унылое радио, которое не задает атмосферы и вызывает только желание выключить его.
    - из серьезного криминального произведения с топовыми и колоритными персонажами, игра превратилась в легкий боевичек потеряв свой шарм. Еще и были в корне изменены некоторые ключевые персонажи.

    Из плюсов:
    - приятная стрельба, которая при классическом уровне сложности чувствуется с легким налетом челенджа.
    - атмосферный город, по которому приятно кататься во время выполнения миссий.
    - прикольная система копов, которые тригерятся на превышение скорости и другие легкие нарушения (плюс реализм).
    - насыщенный сюжет полный экшеновых событий (но оригинал лучше).

    I really wanted to love this game but I just couldnt. The story is rather fun but man for a 10 hour game this gameplay is so repetitive. At first I was like wow this is awesome and then 75% of the way I was kind of wishing it was over.

    If you wanted to improve the original, you had to remove the rap music from the end credits. This game conveys the spirit of the era, through music as well. Sometimes these little things ruin the whole atmosphere.

The carefully crafted narrative missions like Visiting Rich People or Moonlighting are completely butchered and the developers didn't got it right. This game is mediocre and it reaches this status because of the excellent blueprint the original one provides. For those who just want a "meh game"that will be forgotten in 5 months this is your game. Lucky ones that didn't have this appreciation to the original one.     Grapics is good. Gunsounds are awful. Car physics is ok-ish. Weapon wheel is abysmal abomination.

Many tonal inconsistencies and the ending is abrupt, motivation of the characters stretched so hard that shaolin monk would be jealous. I don't think i will remember even playing this game say 10 months later. Case in point that 1. improving graphics isn't always enough for a good remake 2. duckling syndrome hits hard sometimes. I do understand that for some people this was the first serious game with plot and character development, but these story and gameplay just don't stand the test of time. Great story but the end of the game and some scenes was terribly turned into ridiculous Hollywood nonsense. Potential in unused content, discarded. Some missions or part of the game are completely missing or slightly altered, it's the same with music that's missing. The choice add in to game difficulty is bad and not appropriate, the classic difficulty is not classic at all and it looks like no one has tested it, you will experience with pain, it has nothing to do with the regular difficulty of the original game. You can't turn off that awful HUD. After this, it can be seen the developers never played the original.

The freedom of the original level designs are long gone and replaced with linear shooting galleries. The checkpoint system is a disaster. The game can be fun at times, especially the Hotel Corleone mission (one of the few missions that actually saw an improvement.) Overall, I can't see myself playing this for a year much less 18 years like I have the original. I think the biggest error was not consulting the original director.     * Graphics look similar to Mafia 2 with brightness turned up. "Amazing graphics" is hyperbole.
    * Pop-in galore, to the point of cars and trains popping in right in front of you.
    * Textures are generally low resolution even on maxed settings. Heavy dithering.
    * Sounds are generally weaker in quality than Mafia 1. Lack of environmental audio.
    * Atrociously poor lighting, the game will fade between odd shades of white, yellow and blue.
    * Lucas Bertone missions missing from story mode.
    * Fake pretense that tries to squeeze out the "coolness" of the characters to sound modern.
    * Simulation driving mode is akin to a regular arcade driving mode, realistic physics are gone.
    * No realistic suicide doors on cars like Mafia 1.
    * No car tuning options like Mafia 2.
    * Poor damage model on cars, smash into wall at full speed does nothing.
    * The slow, methodical gameplay of Mafia 1 that increased difficulty and immersion is gone.
    * Can't open bonnet to repair car like in Mafia 2.
    * Lockpicking minigame dumbed down.
    * Majority of music from the original is missing including all Mills Brothers and Belleville.
    * Terrible gun play and cover system. Really, beyond parody.
    * No world interactivity like turning on lights, faucets, flushing toilets etc.
    * Intrusive toddler level waypoint markers telling you what to do and where to go at all times.
    * Lack of bullet detail like entry holes on car tires.
    * Bugs, glitches and generally poor quality control of the map. Several map seams found.
    * No spoilers, but the game ends with a rap song. I'll let that one speak for itself.
    * Can't disable basic in-game features like HUD, health bar or mini map. Is this actually 2020?
    * No money system, can't buy anything.
    * "Tommy is not a trained soldier" well that was a lie.

    That is a lot of negative sentiment one might say. But the amount of positive reviews not even touching on the disconnect between what Hangar 13 marketed this to be and what it actually delivers honestly makes me worried for where this industry is going and I can't help to wonder about the thought process and motives behind of all these flawless masterpiece 10/10 reviews.

    For a newcomer, sure, this game might be fun for a couple of hours, albeit a pretty expensive fun. If you played the original, it is little more than a hollow shell. Moreover it is the literal definition of false advertising by Hangar 13 and 2K.    … Expand

    There are lots of car variants missing, no multiple way of completing the missions.
    Overall I liked the game but reading the oficial page and watching all interviews with Blackman I feel like a bit disapointed.
    The mafia that you remember and more... well I certainly remember a lot more from the original one.

    One of the reasons i bought this game was the awesome train ride they showed in the trailer and all the NPC they showed walking about. Now i hear i can't use the train?? Another false advertising. Just like Snowrunner.

    - using trams & trains for players
    - earn money and spend it

    Really wish the game was open world the only good thing about the game is the graphics and new actors and character models and of course the missions gave me so much memories but Tbh we all know this game is a huge letdown as you literally cannot do anything except from missions.

    There is so much wrong with this "faithfully recreated" game that I don't know where to begin. I could write a whole book about it, but I have condensed it to the following:

    Aside of the butchered story, I think one thing that goes quite unnoticed is the amount of details/interactivity you had in the original vs the remake. No riding on transport, no choosing your own route to missions, no skill required whatsoever etc..

    City seems to have a grey/blue filter to it, and somehow seems more devoid of life than Mafia 1 was...even though it has way more detail. Traffic lights are missing. Also, looks big but is somehow smaller, with less space to drive, and its bushes are made of titanium.

    Cars have no textures, just the usual "GTAV" thing that most open world games do these days : vertex paint. Basically means game paints the car whichever color you want with no texture cost. Thats why they are all clean and without much detail.

    There is no permanence to the traffic like in Mafia 1, things vanish like in GTA, early cars don't show up in freeride mode once the game is finished. They are simply replaced by 1938 vehicles

    Story wise great. Detail great.. Just a shame you dont let us look at the detail as free roam mode had no interiors to explore.. No trains that work. All that time and effort those game designers went to.. And for what for them to be closed in free roam

    This is not a real open world game since you can not do nothing other than taking a mission.
    this isnt 2002 anymore- you should have made some changes in game play and make it a real open world game and not only dramatic graphic remastering.

Auch wenn ich es noch nicht 1:1 verglichen habe, die neue Version erscheint mir deutlich kürzer. Die "Filmszenen" deutlich zu viel und zu lang. Sie verhindern oft einfach dass man endlich weiter spielen kann. Dinge die in Mafia II ein Gewinn waren, fehlen leider, obwohl das doch die Chance gewesen wäre, damit der alte Version noch etwas mehr Pfiff zu geben.

I spent so little time enjoying the areas because of this. Do you miss shooting a cars tires while in a car chase? Or perhaps try to snipe the gas tank?     Released a quick game without making a deep plot and game extensions. The plot flew by at 10-11 o'clock without looking to the side. Walk ride mode - like a ghost town.

    Was hoping for Mafia 1 with modern graphics, this is not it.
    Ok, story is still great but the game is missing the feeling what original has, it is just mission after mission nonstop.
    All sidequests are missing and driving around city between them gone, no using train or tramline either or repairing cars.
    Original was better in gameplay and story.

    The game is very short and if you played the original you will understand how in DE all missions are shortened and have an easy way of playing.

    DE Free mode is a dead world. I think it was in vain that they turned it on and the players became dissatisfied with this game in general.
    As always, the only hope is for mods from modders creators.

    This is a full-fledged, honest to God remake. Some changes to the story will upset hardcore fans, but I think this approach is absolutely justified. Even though this remake is not as amazing as new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7, it’s still a worthy update.

    The main difference between the remake and the original game is that the latter was outstanding for its time, while the Definitive Edition is “merely” good. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. What’s crucial here is the fact that Hangar 13 approached the original’s narrative with proper respect and refrained from changing it too much. Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be remarkable as an open-world action game, but it still has the story worthy of the most revered gangster movies. [12/2020, p.28]

    Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of mixed flavours. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's great. Some elements are just as they used to be, and it's awful. Mixture of aged mechanics and amazing graphics, new voices, great old story and some added, yet bad storylines, make it not such a perfect remake. But it sure is worth your time, whether you are a fan of the original or not. The moral of the story survived in all its glory, just be sure to focus your attention to the details where Mafia used to and still shines the most.
