I really wanted to like Madden 19. When EA finally released a new NFL game for the PC, I had to have it. I loaded it up on my computer and sat down to relive some old memories. But the more I played, the more the nagging doubts kept cropping up, the more the key features I'd enjoyed from previous titles became conspicuous in their absence.
In fairness, it's a pretty game. The animations are nice and the presentation looks very modern. I'm a guy who wasted his youth playing the games from the XBOX era and graphics don't mean a whole lot to me, but they do look good. But this game is an example of how polished graphics don't translate into a good user experience without a good game underneath them.

Everything else is a broken mess of missing features and linear game design-

*The stuttering audio and wonky frame rate I got when I installed it made it almost impossible to play- I spent twenty minutes on forums before I found the answer (you have to unlock the frame rate and turn off V-Sync, simple enough), but why did the game release like that? Didn't anyone test it?

*You can't change the music. I guess if I were a huge fan of hip hop, that wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not. There's no option to skip tracks or import music from my computer, which you could do on Madden 08, ten years ago. After an hour, I ended up turning the music off altogether and just scrolled along in silence.

*You can't create your own team. I was excited to see the Outlaws (my custom team for years now) on next-gen hardware, but no dice. You can still create your own characters, but you're limited to about ten faces and none of them look like me or my friends, which is half the reason I do the franchise mode.

*The fantasy draft holds your hand through drafting players and assigns each choice you make a grade. "Oh, no! You reached for that player! He's ranked 112 and you took him at 98!" the system will say disapprovingly. So regardless of my personal feelings about a guy, I have to watch an error message every time I don't make what the game considers an 'optimal' choice.

*The tile-based menus aren't terrible, but they do feel a bit dumbed-down. And the voice that tells me, every single time, that I should choose the options menu to change the options is grating, to say the least. It would also be nice to get the constant ads for EA products off the screen somehow.

I realize that every one of my issues relates to some feature I expected the game to have that it doesn't. And maybe console gamers have been dealing with this for years. But Madden 19 is a wonderful example of what's wrong with the game industry right now. If you're the kind of person who invites friends over to play each other at Madden, it probably works fine for you. And it's not a terrible game. I'm just sad to have waited 10 years for THIS.

Worst madden I have ever played. I got it on sale for 14.99 9 months after its release because I havent played one in 5 years and even with the discount it wasnt worth the buy. The animations are the worst I have seen, even after all the patches in any video game and cant believe it was released the way it was.

As normal with EA, their main focus is micro-transactions and MUT does it's best to persuade you to part with additional money, even though they are charging £55 for the base game and £70 for the HoF edition. (Origin Access Premier would be wise if you plan on playing other EA games, as you get 50k coins in MUT) On the whole, I find MUT to be packed with content and coins can be earned very easily, so as of now, there is no real need to part ways with real money to upgrade your team.

Franchise mode is still very bare and wish it had the level of content/management 2K brings to the NBA series.

Longshot is EA trying to create a B movie and is not worth your time unless you want a few custom uniforms for MUT in the end.

Overall, I think it's a fairly good return to PC and I am so glad to be able to play Madden again, but I would like to see more content in the game and a bigger focus on the other game modes, we all know EA make their billions from Ultimate Team, but it would be nice for some of that be invested elsewhere in the game.

The other thing that made me refund was the tearing on the screen, lack of halftime highlights... Somehow Madden has gotten worse from my memories. Dunno. I think the NFL should introduce some competition to EA... because this game is not what I remember.

On the Positive, I did like that when I hit people or score I get exp for my players. But dont like seeing it while playing in the play. Recommend an after game report.

The franchise mode is exactly what it has been for years. I haven't played a madden since 16 and i can honestly say i wouldn't notice any differences between the games. MUT is pretty much a money grab. A "my player" experience is non existent. I was searching for an online match for 20 minutes and still could not find one and was never able too. Whilst the graphics are good and the physics and mechanics have improved over previous iterations of the game, it is in my opinion that not enough substance has been provided.

I wanted to like this game, i truly did. But i could not find myself having fun while playing. There was no immersion while playing a single player franchise mode, the inability to have the computer call the plays for me as a running back totally took me out of the game. Another key factor was the mouse pointer bug, this would cause the mouse pointer to randomly appear in the middle of the screen and move players around. (apparently a common bug since pre-release)

Once again, these are only my opinions. I have since returned this game, since there was honestly not enough content to enjoy past the first few hours. Maybe on console with a few friends it would be more enjoyable, but as a PC title you need to be able to be enjoyed as a single player experience.

I have to rate this madden at a 1/10, due to the fact it held my attention for such a small amount of time. If i am comparing this to my experiences in Madden 16 i would say buy that and update the rosters.

Thank you for reading my review.

If you want a game locked at an awful framerate (running at around 30 while the framerate ticker mysteriously was reading around 90 fps for me) and feeling completely strangled with an awful, uneditably narrow field of view, then buy this game. It looks no different from the game I played literally 10 years ago. I'm really not exaggerating here; this looks like Madden '08 on PC with updated menus and rosters. They've done nearly nothing to the engine, the graphics look exactly the same. It plays exactly the same. The only noticeable difference is that the menus are much more difficult to navigate. It does not take advantage of PC hardware whatsoever, which is a joke because games like the Fifa series look stunning on PC.

Now I know what everyone was complaining about when they called each new year of Madden a "glorified roster update". What a ridiculous waste of money it was to purchase this. **** EA and **** this stale franchise. I'm so disappointed.

Out the gate EA had a few issues (on all platforms) with the logic of the players in the game. watch early YouTube videos and you can see week one guys not picking up fumbles and other issues. This has since been patched...i believe reviews should give a few weeks before leaving a poor rating based on launch bugs, it is difficult to launch a game with no bugs at all.

So i will hit this in a few sections. First up Longshot.

Longshot Homecoming was an amazing story. It felt like Friday night lights meets Draft Day in a way. It was so intriguing to me i did not put the controller down until i reached the end of the story (which you can continue) Yes it is a short experience, its not going to take 20 hours, But it is a great experience that i will play again.

    Franchise,

Franchise mode is more than this. They bundled 'superstar' (myplayer), season, and franchise into one section here. You can create a coach or play as a pre-existing coach, you can create a player with a slight backstory, you can also be the owner. Plenty of options exist so you can model the franchise to your liking.

Once you get started everything that you need/want is there. However, there are a few cons. Trading can be too easy once you figure out the system in place, and more control over player contracts would be nice. Overall the layout is very user friendly compared to past years.

    Gameplay,

They have changed a lot in my opinion, animations are more realistic, blocking is more realistic, defenders pathing to the ball carrier are better. its not perfect but wow things have changed. Rushing can be a lot harder if you do not adjust to these changes.

    PC performance.

I have read people having issues with performance, for some reason EA default settings had the game running with vsync off and at 4k resolution. which surprising ran great on my pc however i did get screen tearing. I clicked one button and i no longer have any screen tearing (i turned vsync on) i also lowered the resolution to 1440p in order to get what i believe a 60fps experience. I have a very middle road pc.

    Fx-8300 CPU
    R9-380 GPU
    16gbs Ram
    SSD

The game runs smooth....very smooth in fact.

I do not play online so i cannot review the MUT or the micro-transactions that are attached to that. but to leave a 0 review based on this is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. You have a FULL game in the franchise mode and story, lets not be overly greedy.

However, if you are only here for the online style game play then this review is not for you. I added 1 point to my score due to the blatant emotional reviews that are already here. Overall i would say this game is deserving of a 85 out of 100 and one of the best maddens of late.

To add, alot of the issues mentioned in the negative reviews are setting changes that they are unaware that exists.

This game is basically a cut and paste of Madden 18 with some minor gameplay and slight visual improvements. The game looks nice until the bugs arrive. It also has the heavily marketed new CFM menus and repeating animations.

The PC version that I have has bugs upon bugs upon bugs. Example: When I withdraw my offer to extend a contract in CFM, the game crashes in Cloud and goes to an undefined screen in Offline. Another example: In booth review replays, the feet go through the ground, you can't tell what the CPU is registering as feet inbounds and often calls it differently than it looked. The News Feed in CFM is a joke. It often is contradictory to itself or not relevant. The idea that they are dedicated to CFM seems like just a marketing point with nothing behind it in the actual game other than repeating animations of a pacing coach in his office.

We are still extremely limited in customization. Madden NFL 08 for PC had a TON of customization in the game. They have not expanded the experience of moving a team in CFM. They don't even give you basic jersey customizing that games in 2013 and before had. Custom stadium editor, Play/Formation editor of some sort, Radio show in CFM menus, customizable field art, these are all features that previous Madden games had that are not in this game in 2018. 2K5 even had customizable stadium music where you control the playlist for first downs, touchdowns, etc. CFM needs more customization. Relocation teams need more customization control.

The Real Player Motion does make the overall gameplay feel like you are actually controlling your player instead of triggering rock, paper, scissors scripted animation moments. Yet, these scripted animation moments are still there and have been documented, but the transition to these moments is smoother.

The Halftime presentation is sad. NFL 2K5 is still superior. A Madden producer in an interview ripped on how 2K5 did it because he is tired of people telling him about it. He said that if they can't do it right, they won't do it. I'm sorry that doesn't make sense when I have a buggy game for $60. You have the same animations over and over again in other areas, but you can't put it in halftime? Sure.

Longshot is basically a movie that you play games between the scenes. No thanks. Until it becomes something of a real player controlled RPG with real choices that effect the game with a person that I create, I will not be playing, or counting as a plus, this mode.

And of course, I don't play the pay-to-win MUT. Microtransactions in a $60 game is ridiculous. Especially since we don't see a quality improvement across the game from the revenue it brings in.
And why should the NFL or the NFLPA (player's union) care. They get the money from MUT too. That is all that matters it seems.

The strong point of Madden 19, and Madden 18, is the commentating. The effort the team has put in to making it less repetitive and more dynamic comes through every play. It is the one part of the game that I would give a 8 out of 10 for. Include the fact that they are updating it continually, it makes it the most enjoyable part of the game. Expanding the commentating for CFM related moments would make that score go higher, but it is pretty good right now.

This year I am really disappointed. This game lost many improvements they made in previous versions, physics seems very weird. I am not able to win any game due to tragicly made offensive mechanisms. Players cant catch the ball. Linebackers are standing on the ground doing nothing so I get sacked almost every play. When I throw long balls they almost always end with interception but short ones too. These mechanism are very unreal. If anyone played real life football or any other ball game he/she knows how hard is to steal or intercept the ball.
Defensive players run faster than offensive players, etc..

The worst madden game yet imo. You can't play defense no point in even trying really, on offense you can use the same quick slant and drive right down the field which is so boring and if you try to throw something else the cpu defender will pick off everything. It doesn't matter if your wr beats him deep somehow he will get magic speed and pick it off or borderline run over your wr toThe worst madden game yet imo. I have more fun in simming franchise than i do actually playing the game. Expand

I was very excited to try a football game on the PC for the first time in a decade. I was innocent to EA's crap for the most part going in. At first the game feels great because of how good it looks. You don't realize much if any of the now blatant errors in the physic-defying AI, or their programming/logic. You don't realize the scripted animations or scripted referee/penalty outcomes.I was very excited to try a football game on the PC for the first time in a decade. Once you've played a few full games, you start to notice HUGE issues.I'll list some off the top of my head.
1: Defenders act more like ball-catchers than the ball-catchers do. This game is INTERCEPTION HAPPY GALORE!

2: To go along with :1, the ball-catchers will literally keep running or stop and make little to no effort to catch a ball if it isn't exactly in their run path. It's SO annoying and unrealistic. This is the worst in the redzone. Trying to pass in the redzone for a TD almost always requires a money play or a blatantly wide-open receiver

3: Linebackers jump the height of the Eiffel Tower to catch unrealistic picks CONSTANTLY. It's incredibly frustrating when this combines with Quarterbacks not having realistic ball arcs. It turns throws that should be catches into interceptions on an AT LEAST an every other game basis.

4: Online Multiplayer (including Franchise) is almost unplayable. The input lag is so bad and the game suffers from constant disconnections from the EA server.. Literally don't bother.

5.) Franchise Mode is weak and bare. The 'owner mode' is a joke. It's sad how bad a game can regress from games made 10 years ago that were far more in-depth and involved than this pile of feces.

Don't get this game, OR Madden 20. Madden 20 is literally the same game with minor tweaks and a roster update. Just like this was of 18. Also Longshot is boring and stupid.

For newcomers, Madden NFL 19 is a bumpy start for their new favorite hobby, with veterans benefiting from the ongoing uptrend.

For those who enjoy Madden, I think it's definitely worth a buy over the console versions, particularly if EA Sports can fix the jittery over-60fps gameplay. Most of us like the flexibility that PC gaming offers just in the options alone. Once the few bugs are ironed out (including Madden having issues connecting to EA servers, repeatedly), I think the game will be absolutely brilliant. They have made a great attempt at a comeback on PC, it just ends up being marred by some minor glitches which can prove immensely frustrating.

Madden NFL 19 is a fantastic entry into the long-running series. The new Player Movement System and air collision system lead to far more fluent gameplay and animation while MUT comes in better than ever. The MUT challenges are enjoyable and offer a great way to start building your team and a new emphasis on training and chemistry allows for more strategy. New or returning, Madden NFL 19 is a must buy for football fans.
