Little Misfortune is a walking simulator masquerading as a point and click adventure game. There are no puzzles of note here, and the game is a strictly linear path from start to finish.

I don’t have anything against walking simulators, but a walking simulator lives and dies on plot and presentation. And unfortunately, Little Misfortune falls short on both.

This is a game that is deliberately ugly. The characters are all deliberately drawn to be “off”, and everything is drawn to have a run-down and often outright creepy vibe. The main character has a veneer of innocence but obviously has had a messed up life with a messed up family, and the only really nice thing in the game – “Mr. Voice”, the voice in her head – is obviously evil, with the first thing he tells us being that Little Misfortune, the “protagonist” of the work, is going to die.

And while all of this can work if there’s a strong plot and purpose to it, honestly, this game isn’t impressive at all in that department. The problem is that Little Misfortune isn’t a particularly interesting character – she’s a little girl from a messed up family, and she is more or less the same person at the start as she is at the end. The entire plot of the game is an excuse to take us through a series of rather morbid areas while being led on by Mr. Voice, and while the game does try to misdirect us about when and how Misfortune is going to die, that’s really the only “trick” it has up its sleeve. The game is very transparent about almost everything that is really going on, and the overall morbid and gross-out “humor” that the game leans on wears on the audience after playing for only a short while. It is just too one note, and as I never actually came to care about Little Misfortune, there was nothing to connect with here.

I can’t recommend this. It is endlessly morbid, but the messed up humor of the walking simulator is basically three hours of variations on the same joke, and there is a great deal of meandering around before the work finally goes somewhere.

This is a work of art. Despite being simple and short, the game is charming and it touched me in a really profound way, like a good book or a movie.

I have seen a lot of people online saying how they liked Fran Bow but didn’t like Little Misfortune due to the lack of puzzles. I can understand that because I have the opposite reaction for the same reasons. Fran Bow was a puzzle game that had a fantastic narrative while Little Misfortune is just a narrative game without the puzzles. I can understand that because I have the opposite reaction for the same reasons. Fran Bow was a puzzle game that had a fantastic narrative while Little Misfortune is just a narrative game without the puzzles. I disliked the puzzles in Fran Bow so Little Misfortune was basically giving me what I enjoyed from Fran Bow and leaving out what I didn’t. The art style is great and carries onto the credits which is a unique one. The voice acting is fantastic. Both Misfortune and The Voice. There are moments which are sad, funny and in between and they nail all of them. Misfortune has a interesting accent and way of speaking which is a mix of child and adult. There are a lot of points which are pretty macabre, to the point where I surprised the developers took it as far as they did but was glad they did. The nightclub full of hamsters comes to mind. I don’t think the game would have grabbed a hold of me the way it did if they had of held back. The music was also very interesting as it made me think of an Eastern European disco and a cyberpunk synth type of vibe. There isn’t much in terms of “game play” here. Most of the game is you making choices and interacting with the environment to proceed. I don’t say this as a slight against the game because the story was great. Had the story been bad then the game would have fallen apart because there was nothing else to hold it together but luckily it was good. In regards to choices when The Voice says that there are no good or bad choices, just consequences, they mean it. It made me think of the episode of The X-Files with a genie who when granting your wish would always find a way to warp what you asked for in a way you hadn’t expected. For instance a person asked for a boat and got it but then realized they would have to pay docking fees, maintenance fees and taxes on the boat that they hadn’t thought of and thus they couldn’t even use the boat that they had asked for. There are a lot of things like that associated with the choices you make in Little Misfortune so don’t try to over analyze it, the Voice will find a way to turn your choice bad regardless and I have to say that was a sadly realistic take on things from the developers. I was left with some questions such as just how Morgo was defeated; who was responsible for what happened to Misfortune; what role we the player played seeing as how the Voice talked to us as well but overall enjoyed myself. The middle part of the game had some stretches where not much happened in the story but it got past that.

I played Little Misfortune on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs. There was an option for V-Sync; PostFX and resolution. Alt-Tab didn’t work. You could manually save whenever you wanted and there were 3 save slots available. You could also just use the auto save feature if you wanted. You can’t pause or skip cut scenes. The game ran great with no drops in frame rate.

    Game Engine: Unity
    Graphics API: OpenGL
    Save System: Manual and Auto
    Input Used: Mouse and keyboard
    Game Version Played: 1.0

Game Settings Used: V-Sync and PostFX on; 1920x1080
    GPU Usage: 0-57 %
    VRAM Usage: 685-1219 MB
    CPU Usage: 3-8 %
    RAM Usage: 2.2-2.7 GB
    Frame Rate: 132-144 FPS

If you are willing to accept narrative over game play then Little Misfortune has a lot to offer. A great story; voice acting and art style. It has it’s limitations and leaves some questions on the table but overall I came away impressed. It is equal parts cute; macabre; sad; and funny. There is a demo available for those who want to try it first.

Reputo ciò il punto debole del gioco perché non permette al videogiocatore di immergersi al 100% all'interno di quella che potrebbe essere una bella esperienza videoludica e dunque gran parte dell'esperienza di gioco non viene valorizzata.

Instead of "from the creators of Fran Bow" they should have gone with "We created Fran Bow, alright? But this is nothing like it".

The shortest "P&C" I ever played. I think I was done in 2 hours and a bit more. Hugely disappointed. It looks a quick way for the devs to make a few bucks. It's not a P&C it's a Click-and-keep-moving-forward.

Little Misfortune is a decent little adventure game. It has a slightly dark and decent story. Unfortunately some of that gets lost in the rather bad voice acting for Miss Fortune (the "voice" is pretty good though!) and the (two?) instances of out-of-place potty humor.

I think people saw Little Misfortune and thought "Oh sweet Fran Bow 2 now with different character" it is not Fran Bow 2. It's not a point and click, it's not a puzzle game, and most importantly, it is not Fran Bow. Going in and expecting that will ruin the game for you. This is a game where you are meant to connect with this tiny 8 year old who doesn't understand until it is ACTUALLY too late.

Enjoy the game for what it is and not for what it isn't. It picks up and explains what Fran Bow left unexplained. It's almost akin to Captain Spirit, short, explanatory, somewhat dark but with Fran Bow's universe. Like I said, it's a game meant to be enjoyable at surface level. You're supposed to die today and the game does a nice job of showing you how much your tiny little naive princess can die. Don't go out of your way to find where Fran Bow comes into play, don't look for what Misfortune's connection to Fran Bow is. It's not there, this isn't Fran Bow, there is no Fran Bow, and you only find two pieces of evidence that this is part of her universe.

Fran Bow was good because it gave us whimsy and demons. Little Misfortune is good because it gives us a lovable main character and someone pulling the strings the whole time. Help her get the prize at the end of the game, let her be the free spirit she is, let her be her own character...not Fran Bow.

First, the good. There are several things to like here. The art direction is solid, the characters are good, the story is decent (even if its potential wasn't fully realized), the voice acting and music are pretty good, and the dark humor keeps it funny. There is some intrigue and mystery in the story and, initially, the choices seem like they might really affect the game. In these areas, the game excels. The Fran Bow references are an added plus and the content matter makes you think.

Now for the bad. The game play is almost non-existent. It's very linear. Despite the narrative of the story, the choices don't seem to make much of a meaningful difference. There isn't much depth to the mechanics when compared to Fran Bow. There is no inventory, you cannot really use items, the puzzles barely even exist, and, when they do, it's basically spoon fed to you. When you reach the end, you feel like you're still missing at least half of the game. The endings aren't even really that diverse or consequential.

The game had a lot of potential. Perhaps it can still be expanded upon with more chapters. I know the team put a lot of work into it and I was really looking forward to it. The demo seemed very promising. The final product, however, was sort of a let down. It might not be what they want to hear but I think their next move should absolutely be in the Fran Bow universe - sequel, prequel, or otherwise. Get back to the roots of their first hit, get more sales, and then try again with Different Galaxy instead of jumping into it next.

The story made me uneasy not because I thought: ‘those are the kind of things that shouldn’t be said out loud’ but because I thought: ‘it’s unsettling how poorly it is written, how badly they depicted a child’s naivety and how everything is just too over the top’. [12/2019, p.78]

Dark humour is used liberally throughout Little Misfortune’s exploration of bleak themes. Half of the time, you don’t know whether to laugh or recoil in horror. Either way, it’s easy to become absorbed in the plight of our little heroine. It’s pretty short for the price of admission and arguably a little too much of a cinch to play, but a loveably weird tale all the same.
