I am someone who has played this game for hours upon hours, and I have to say that it is a semi - disappointment. I cannot give this game anything above 8 even though I'm not saying it's a bad game. The content is just extremely limited and if you were to run through all the levels without zombies you'd get a sense of how small the levels actually are. Quite the opposite of I am someone who has played this game for hours upon hours, and I have to say that it is a semi - disappointment. I cannot give this game anything above 8 even though I'm not saying it's a bad game. The content is just extremely limited and if you were to run through all the levels without zombies you'd get a sense of how small the levels actually are. Quite the opposite of what valve had written in their game description, boasting about the huge levels. Finding a decent server to play on takes a while due to the general lack of players, unstable dedicated servers, and getting connected to lag-infested servers across the world. They tried to get rid of repetitive play by supposedly introducing an AI director, which spawns zombies and guns at different locations every time you play, but it really doesn't help out. Repetition tends to be alright for most multi-player gaming (like counterstrike), but it's unacceptable for a game like l4d since it's a freaking co-op game. The biggest problem I have with this game is the price that it was sold for. Valve really took advantage of the community by charging $50, releasing a game that can be completed in the same hour range as portal. The biggest disappointment would probably be the versus gameplay. I have never played anything more stupid in my life. Survivors generally have a huge advantage over special infected, and you'll find yourself dying often until you get a tank. If you can't kill them with the tank, chances are they'll win the level. They really should have focused on making the maps larger and introducing vehicles for this game, instead of making the special infected playable. It's fun puking on the survivors as a boomer for the first 5 minutes, then it's just monotony and boredom. By writing this review I am not saying this is a bad game, but it is without a doubt, a VERY INCOMPLETE game. Expand

This game delivers exactly what it promises: fast paced cooperative game play. Easy to pick-up and very immersive. Perfectly captures the atmosphere of old zombie B-movies. One of the best cooperative games on the market. Another sublime game from Valve. If more content will become available in the future then this game's rating could raise to 10.

This is a great game. The AI Is not however very smart because it spawns a tank right behind you and then your whole team is dead. The Music is great and all the 7 weapons are very simple Shotgun for close hits Assault rifles for mid range hits and sniper for long ranged hits. And the way they make pistols have infinite ammo is great.

There's nothing to prevent you from ending up in some lame-brain's custom map. The interface can't seem to figure out if the server is full, back at lobby after a game, on someone's laptop or anything, and so gives you super-laggy servers or disconnects after connecting you. Finily Someone remembered how to make a Mutiplayer Shooter game thats not just Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch! It is a nice return to the Co-op days of Doom2. Many of the other shooter with a story arc should remember not everyone in to Deathmatch some of us just like sitting down with a few friends and take on the bad guys and not each other.

I love this game. I will admit after playing the levels a few times you do feel that it becomes a little mundane. I think that if you were able to increase the flow of zombies not just the damage they do(the difference between difficulties besides the fact that you 1 shot your team mates on accident on expert) it would make the game more fun as well. Hoping for more maps to come.

This game is worth to playing but I think free demo will be enough. Old Source engine, mostly tiny maps and rutiin gameplay with free CS:S mod gameplay in mind totally ruin all Valve's attempt to make this mod anyhow better. The frustration is in the crossover reality shortcomings: the weapons are mismatched and the people are as well. Why can't I run faster than the Tank? I should at least be on par so I can dodge the stupid thing. And the best gun is the repeating shotgun and the worst is the pump action shotgun. The best weapon Should be the AR-15(M16) but it is not really here except as a visual. I think the programmers should portray it as a pellet pistol because that's all the damage I can do with the game version! The programmers should go out and try some of the guns at the shooting range or at least talk to people familiar with the weapons. I have a problem with the reality of changing the magazine and clearing a dud round etc, but give me a 300 round can and not the 50 round, or give a realistic hit level for the zombies. 4000 hits to take down a Tank!?Way too much. For Example, with the AR-15, I can kill you with less than the 20 rounds in a small clip in about 5 seconds, break every bone in your body and you'd be dead before the 10th round; so 4000 hits without any visible damage and having to change clips at least 20 times in teamwork or depend on fire or something else to stop the attack, is crazy. I also would like to carry more than one pipebomb, trudging around to get another one takes too much time, I would even give up some ammo for the weight. it's too frustrating mixing reality with fantasy, I guess I hate being at a disadvantage with superior firepower, it doesn't make much sense. Last note on weapons; there is a NATO option to have a mix of AP and tracer bullets for the M16, let's get some! Expand

Also, I fail to see the logic of rating it based on the players you played with, rather than the actual content of the game itself. That aside.... The game is a great concept on paper, uses the source engine so most players will have good visuals and a solid framerate, however there are a few oversights in the implementation that needs to be addressed before I give this game a 9-10. The first being melee attacks. Survivors can spam melee attacks and be almost invincible against regular zombies, and makes hunters getting a pounce in rather challenging in many parts of the maps. There are several exploits, and due to the nature of the game's matchmaking system, players may find themselves having their entire campaign ruined by a 4 year old who thinks hes so cool by spawning 20 hunter bots and watching them destroy the survivors. The game also somewhat lacks content at the moment. On release, there are 4 campaigns, 2 of which have "versus" mode, a mode where 4 players play as special infected zombies and try to stop the survivors, then they switch every round and whoever with the most points at the end, wins. These campaigns last about 1-2 hours, but with only 2 currently available for the versus mode, right now it can get a bit repetitive. All in all, a great game, a must-get for any zombie fan, but the decision to buy now or to wait for a price drop and a few patches is a decision to each their own. Expand

While I find the expert mode the only challenge for my FPS experience level, the lower difficulties help newbies get their feet wet and can make the game both humorous and frustrating. The server interface is non existent. Way too much reliance on dedicated servers that shut down without warning, crash and glitch often and usually match you with the highest ping server possible. Finding a suitable game often becomes a chore, sometimes sitting in a lobby for 5 minutes waiting for a search to finish. I've found hosting local games more reliable, but the players that get placed are usually on the other coast or out of country which gives them poor pings. Historically valve has done a decent job in patching the multiplayer experience and I hope this is not the exception. Like Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer, the game is heavily reliant on a teamwork environment so having just one weak player usually means restarting levels often fueling the frustration to find better gaming partners. Server hopping seems to be normal. This game certainly does not apply to the Gung-Ho, Rambo style players. The $50.00 price tag seems a bit steep for the overall entertainment value. Expand

The hitboxes are a little screwy on your teammates, as sometimes they get hit by friendly fire even when your reticule is not over them, but it's not game-breaking by any means. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because this game /forces/ you to play it online if you want to get the best experience out of it. Yes, it is a co-op zombie shooter - John S, you didn't play the multiplayer, how can you rate this game poorly when you haven't even touched the main feature? Granted I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I'm intelligent enough to see that the multiplayer would be great (provided your teammates weren't idiots!). John, all I can say is, you fail. Epically. I have to say, while this is a very fun co-op game and extremely unique, the lack of content at release prevents me from giving it a 10. I think that once VALVe releases the SDK, the community will be able to fill in the gaps, but until that point it's a little stunted.

Steele X, did you actually play the game more than once? Or do you just like bashing video games to piss people off? That game is just awesome.I dreamed of CooP Games like this since forever.
I think there is enough said about the game itself by all the others.

There was a demo, wich is really nice, too bad the demo is canceled as the game started selling in the US. People might wanna try the demo before buying it.

Left 4 dead is one of those games that I lusted after as soon as I heard about it, being a big fan of zombie genre entertainment I had high hopes.
This is one of those rare occasions that my expectations were not only met but exceeded, and so it earns the temporary title

Well I dig the game. There were minor bits and pieces here and there that could be worked on. To counter Steel X here. I've run into plenty who use mics, the game loads fast because I have a good computer or the servers are good for which the host is on.
I think it did pretty well, as Adam and Morgan said, taking a very, albeit outdated, source engine and making it a blast again.

People are so stupid sometimes, but i digress. This game is amazingly FUN. No questions asked. My friend was reluctant to try it, and now hes been hooked. I find my self having zombie slaying withdrawals after a couple days of not playing it! I have not had so much fun in a first person shooter since the old days of Counter-Strike, where people actually used teamwork. This brings back memories of the good ol days for me, whilst creating new ones. Definitely some of the best moments are running away from a Tank when hes right behind you, only to accidentally run into a wall and be smashed. Or when i watch as my friend was trying to run away from a Tank on the roof of a 40 story building, only to have the tank punch him and send him flying off the roof! I honestly have had way too many good times on this game in such a short amount of time, and i could call up story after story if i wanted to but ill get to the point. You play 1 of 4 people who are trying to escape the Zombie infested city (it depends on the story you choose, so you may be trying to escape from the farmland too) and there is a giant finale at the end of each story, which is the best part of the game and in my opinion the most adrenaline rushing. There are 4 Stories total with 5 parts to each of them, and they are all unique. Let me set the record straight; THE GAME IS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME YOU PLAY IT! You will NEVER play the same level the same way twice, because the game uses a "Director" to decide who to throw your way and when to do it, same thing applies with items and weapons. There is also a versus mode where you get to play 1 of the 4 special zombies against human players playing the campaign and that is crazy fun. Also, the 4 unique difficulties really add a challenge to the game. I play everything on Expert because it is so much more fun. All in All a great game, i rate 10 out of 10, my other friend wants to "Boot Camp" is Apple Laptop just so he can play this game. Just an FYI so you know how good this game is... Expand

Left 4 dead is a zombie-geek's dream come true: no story, no character background apart from what is obvious from their looks and mumblings, the odds firmly against you (on expert level), knee-deep in corpses, standing back to back with total strangers, who'll you be saving and be saved by many times without any reason beyond that you need them standing next to you with aLeft 4 dead is a zombie-geek's dream come true: no story, no character background apart from what is obvious from their looks and mumblings, the odds firmly against you (on expert level), knee-deep in corpses, standing back to back with total strangers, who'll you be saving and be saved by many times without any reason beyond that you need them standing next to you with a shotgun, simply to stay alive.

L4D has obviously been playtested to perfection, with always the right level of tension, the constant threat of a catastrophic up-close Boomer kill or the AI director deciding you need a wake-up call, the need to preserve ammo and medkits, required tactics simply flowing from the layout of a map and the team's current levels of health and ammo. And those great finales, where the whole brawl usually turns into a total clusterfu*k, turning those who expected to 'win' into zombie lunch in seconds.

Those tired old gamers who can't shoot straight without a story (no need) or character development (fu*king boring in most if not all shooters) should go buy a book instead. The other 99% of gamers, who actually enjoy SHOOTERS have this already - if you haven't, get in, quick!

Sure, it ain't perfect. But not because of the lack of weapons: the shotfuns are perfect (limited range, realistic fire arc, top sound), the assault rifle wins out as the best allrounders, the uzi is pretty crap until you get crowded and it comes into its own. Even the single and double pistols are great. Limited characters? Don't care, since nobody can expect to survive in any case. Limited maps? Modscene will fix that soon.

    An instant classic.

It is a fast-paced, emotionally charged game that will keep you jumping. You WILL need people that you play well with to really enjoy this game though. Without it and you will receive more FF damage than zombie love.

The games music score is truly immersive, and the continuous spawning of baddies makes it so you do not turn into a creep-crawl camper on this nerve wracker.

Downsides? $50 for one. Online sale of this game, with no need for delivery or store presence should keep it in the $40 range, but whatever. the other would be the lack of more maps.

But, hopefully, this is something that will soon be remedied. If valve gives this game half as much attension as some of its others with the patches and expansions, hopefully there will be a few more horror flik referenced levels in the near future! ;)

Co-op is pure fun, and encourage (if not obligate) players to work together or die separately.
Versus, is a whole different thing, it gives you the chance to relax and enjoy while you hunt for some survivor flesh, or you tech the infected who´s the boss.
The story in the game might not be as evident as it may be, but it encourages players to imagine by providing rich and detailed background escenarios filled with proof that others have been there before, and in some cases even left messages to let others know how they are.
If you like zombies, guns, or just some fun an innovative co-op play, you can´t go wrong with Left 4 Dead.

This is a very fun game the first time through, mowing zombies is fun, and the finales are fantastic. My biggest problem is that even with the AI director, this game starts to get very "samey".

The AI director paces the game fantastically, places objects in strategic places so you can't use the same strategy twice, but the problem with a game like this is that though the levels are just as repetitive in competitive online shooters, a coop shooter doesn't have the same unpredictability as playing against a real player (though versus mode on TWO campaigns are available.)

When playing on versus mode, you are playing against real people, although there isn't much difference between human players and ai players.

My main complaints should be solved when map making is supported by default.

    Other complaints include:
    -very small (sometimes useless) arsenal:
Although five weapons means that you can pick up and play very easily, but a small arsenal means that there isn't very diverse, especially when two of the weapons or simply upgrades of a previous tier and one weapon is almost useless in most situations.

    -No browser:
How are we supposed to sort through custom maps with no way to choose which server to join (without using console commands). should be fixed soon though.

    on an end note:
Buy this game, just don't buy it yet. If you can find this game for $-30 then go for it, otherwise wait a few more patches until all the basic problems are fixed.

So please don't review it when you haven't played the game.

Left4Dead is the most unique game that I have ever played. Every feature is new that is never before seen in other games (ie. temporary health). The versus mode is by far the most fun I have ever had in a long time. The first time I played through versus mode, I was shaking in my seat from the excitement of pouncing and vomiting on other people. However, the annoying part about versus mode, is that everyone seems to prefer being an Infected. Every game I join, I will always have 2-3 people leave the game just because they were a Survivor. Even though they will change to Infected the next round, they want to play as the Infected more than anything. That is why I give this an 8/10.

    WARNING:
When playing online, expect an occasional naughty teammate. Gang up on him and kill him with friendly fire. He will be left behind to die and have to spectate for a few minutes until the next checkpoint. The game punishes people who become selfish and run away from the group, find out who you can trust and stay close.

The online play is amazing, but it is the people who can ruin it for you if you let them. (This is the case in any online game.)

    @ Steele X:
"Because the second time I play it it's the exact same thing over again. We all know which monster is going to pop out from where and where are the medic packs are located."

The game randomizes item locations, flood points, difficulty, and even character conversations. If you're getting bored of it, then stop playing on "Easy" and raise the difficulty. In the description it even says that the "Easy" setting is for people who are new to FPS games. "Normal" is for people who are new to L4D, and the highest difficulty is where the fun is at. Then the tables will be turned from "zombie hunting" to "Run? ...Or Shoot? RUN OR SHOOT? ZOMG! BOTH!"

If you don't have any games from Valve, and you want a good starter, this is your game right here.

Even after playing Co-Op, I am still stunned when I play versus, with one of the most balanced games next to Team Fortress 2. Games are often very close, with point values off by a dozen or less. That is, of course, the teams work together. I play only with my personal friends, so my team usually does very well. But I am not grading my friends, so that doesn't really enter the equation.
Base line is, if you stick together and pay attention to your teammates, you will win. Period.

The game itself is fantastic. Very good animations, original, fun concept. The game is amazing. I'll just focus on some of the points that annoy me.

I hear people moaning about how zombies shouldn't run quickly and that players should become infected and turn into zombies when they're bitten. These people are obviously trying to pick a fight. If this game included slow, infectious zombies it would suck and they'd moan about that too.

No, bad PLAYERS. The game's fine. That's like voting CSS 0 because you were blocked in a vent by a player.

And giving it a lower score than you really think because everyone else gave it a 9 or 10 (which they really thought it deserved) is kind of childish.

    Back to my review:

I think the game has exceeded expectations. The maps are very well done, the zombies are very well done, the versus is amazing, and who could forget about the hordes? The hordes help make this game so intense and I love it. The last time I was this addicted to a game like this was 2 - 3 years ago when I was playing counter-strike. I do believe it's more fun when your entire team is talking and cooperating (in versus or co-op) but I think that if you just relax and have fun it's not too bad if people aren't talking. I'm very happy with what the game has to offer at this time but I do see a few things in the future that will need to be done to keep the game interesting and alive: 1) Adding more maps to both co-op and versus (versus especially), 2) working out the bugs, which I know they're doing, 3) And possibly adding a server list like other steam games. - I don't really care for it just searching for a random game. I like seeing what my ping is and having choices. I think if they can at least do the first two things, they'll be good to go for some time.

For those who answer affirmatively to all three, this is a great game. For everyone else, you're probably looking at a pretty mediocre turd (and I probably woulda given it a 5 or something). Looking at what you're given, it should be obvious that the emphasis is not in the story, fancy graphics, or wide array of zombie killing implements you have at your disposal. You only have a pistol and one other weapon, one med kit, and potentially a molotov/pipe bomb & temp health boost. On the contrary, it seems players are supplied with a limited arsenal to make them focus on the co-op and strategic elements! Getting overwhelmed or having a teammate pulled out of safety by a smoker can severely cripple the group's progress so maneuvering in such a way that minimizes these risks is what the real game is about -- and that's how the ai director provides replay value. You may pass through a wide open area with ease during one run, yet in another get assaulted by a tank. It's these on the fly strategic choices that provide the unique experience, not the level layout. So yes, the only things that change are item and enemy locations (no, Steele X, you generally don't know where the monsters nor the items are each play through), but that's all you need to completely change the strategy necessary to get through a campaign. Of course, perhaps you're only slightly into the strategy or don't have any interest in getting better at that sort of thing - if so, yes, you'll be pretty bored pretty quickly. This is also the reason I mention having a good group of friends - I imagine it's pretty hard to play a strategic game like this with mindless idiot strangers. Each campaign should take 1-2 hours, depending on how much you're struggling - not much content for those used to having 50 maps or whatever the norm for fps' is now. Personally, I enjoy improving with my friends so that our strategies are successful in the higher difficulties, but if that doesn't sound interesting, you only have 4 - 6 hours of game here! Bottom line, make sure this is the game for you before buying because those people giving it zero's aren't crazy - this game has a unique offering to the fps community and it's not for everyone. Playing online with other people depends on the luck of the draw. You may be in a good group, or maybe not. I wish that I could play with people who have had actual training. Playing with the bots means that you are in a cooperative, but mediocre, group. The bots seem to have an attraction for being in front of my gun's muzzle.

I wish that Valve would get guns right. Firing pistols two-handed is actually the worst thing you can do. In the game, it's second to an M-16. When you want to throw a molotov or pipe bomb, you have to stare at it a bit, like it's some kind of art object. There are no speed loaders for the shotguns, so shells are stuffed in one by one. Firing the pump shotgun is slow, when in practice it's quite fast. The pistols are actually the main weapons in the game, as they can fire nearly as fast as a machine gun and never run out of ammunition.

The game play is very simple: kill the zombies, again and again and again. The action is very intense, and the "director" AI will keep you on your toes, maybe a bit too much. The bots will jump around, once in a while appearing to ricochet around a room, so not hitting them with "friendly" fire is difficult. A player or bot can be incapacitated by a "special" infected. Multiple times the player bots have left me to "die," so I have to listen to my character's pitiful cries for help until the game resets. I wish that I could direct the player bots to a location, instead of just hoping that they would follow me. The characters occasionally chat amongst themselves, so you learn that Francis hates everything, except dentists.

Now of course you can always play Versus Mode which is ok for a while too until the server crashes which it almost always ends up doing which is really annoying and I can appreciate them trying to make it more realistic with friendly fire but when you get some one who is trigger happy and can't aim worth a damn you end up getting shot which I understand that's the whole point but that gets a little old too when you get some 12yr old who doesn't know what the hell they're doing. There are definitive pros and cons in the game . Maybe if they created some sort of memory erasing device that you could use before the start of every game because the 1st time playing it i had a lot of fun then after that was downhill. Expand

While many games include multiplayer team combat, this game stresses teamwork and tactics beyond beyond what games like TF2 and CS:S are able to deliver on a consistent basis. The four player team creates a dynamic where cooperation is an absolute necessity for success, especially so on the harder difficulties. Gameplay revolves between periods of relative calm and times of extreme duress. The most fitting word to describe the latter is intense! No matter the skill of you and your comrades, there will be moments when the survival of your group is far from a certainty, especially given the random nature of the director. The intensity of the game tends to only increase as the level progresses, as wounded survivors are often met with an uncomfortable lack of medkits when they are most needed. The sound and graphics are thoroughly polished, and despite the age of the source engine its upgrades ensure that the game looks great and has plenty of eye candy. Once again, Valve's trademark attention to detail has made for a vibrant and immersing atmosphere. The ability to blow holes in or destroy doors is a fun new addition that also significantly alters the gameplay mechanic. While the story is underdeveloped, in game chatter between the characters reveals a great deal about their personalities, and makes them seem very real. There are some drawbacks, however. The game is relatively short, especially if played on the lower difficulties, and the weapon selection is somewhat minimal. These should not be a major issue, the game is meant to be played on expert in order to prepare a player for the even more difficult versus mode (which is an absolute blast), and the guns that are present are finely crafted and simply feel right. The replayability of this game is excellent, and is only compounded by the director and versus mode. As is, this game is very exciting and will keep many players hooked for an indefinite amount of hours. Given Valve's devotion to updates and the enthusiastic mod community, I only expect this game to improve as time goes on. I give this game a 9.3 out of 10. Expand

For those who gave this game a zero because they can't find players who will use team work...that isn't Valves fault and shame on them for feeling "obligated" to hurt this games rating. You find a group of people who actually use team work. It's a bonding experience that can't be beat. The game has everything a perfect zombie movie has and it does so in spades. People really need to grow up and give constructive reviews for this game. Even my GF likes this game and she doesn't play games at all. To me that's the sign of a great game, being able to entice non-gamers to be a part of a growing culture.
If this game has faults it's the linear style of game play...which isn't really all that bad, it can get old, but honestly when you play with people who do infact use teamwork you forget that it is linear.

Co-Op is becoming more popular and it's a new field for many people, give them a chance to forget that the game isn't a crappy counter strike game.

You're playing humans who suffer from what I call the Ripley Syndrome, as in you have incredible survival skill and will power that exceeds the average human. You are the main characters in a zombie movie...what would you do?

I'll be playing this for a while, I can tell.

Steele X said: "We all know which monster is going to pop out from where and where are the medic packs are located." That's total BS. Every time you play a level, the zombies are randomly placed, the Horde comes at you from random directions, and health and weapons are randomly placed in one of several spots. It's totally unpredictable, which is part of what makes it fun. And just because you have a bad experience playing with idiots who don't communicate doesn't make it a bad game. Teamwork is key here. Find yourself some new friends, people who do communicate and play as a team, is all.

You not only fight off the hordes, but then you take on zombies that not only have different mutations, but are also controlled by players. Then you swap places and you get to control zombies, which is just as intense as trying to fight them. Teamwork as survivors is critical is almost always present. The best times are when every survivor has a microphone and everyone is coordinating. You work with that same team to stop the survivors and it's intensely satisfying to watch the survivors bogged down and not moving any closer to the target destination because you and your teammates are endlessly keeping them pinned down and weaning their health away. There are only 5 main weapons and two options for pistols, but that takes nothing away from the game. You always have the option of an automatic weapon or a shotgun (and a scoped rifle later on), which satisfies all your zombie killing needs in whichever way you choose to fight. Sound track is excellent as are the sound effects. Zombie killing is always exciting, watching the way zombies fall as they're mowed down by you and your teammates. Overall, I concur heartily with the 9.5 rating and recommend you play it. Well worth the money, my younger brother is saving his so that when I return for the holidays, we can commence "family bonding" in the form of slaughtering zombies. Expand

Despite the rotting bodies, L4D is a breath of fresh air in fps gaming. Heavy emphasis on co-op play has been long overdue and the concept has been taken to the next level in this game. The graphics are beautifully done but the game play combined with replayability will keep me playing for a long time to come.

    The Good
I won't say much about the good, since everyone else has for me. I absolutely love zombie games and this game has a lot of potential. I love how team play is emphasized. If your team has stragglers, a boss zombie will no doubt take advantage. There are several instances where conservation of health pickups and grenades can save a team in the most unsurvivable situations. Graphics were good, and I was impressed with the level of detail in the maps.

    The Bad
This game was highly touted for its AI, but I was not impressed. Even with all the random spawning, maps are still incredibly predictable. This makes the replayability low for some people. Especially since there is only 4 maps. What's worse is that each map plays almost identically as follows:

Start with crappy weapon, horde, boss, rest, horde, boss, rest, flip a switch, horde, boss, rest, second pistol, horde, boss, next level, horde, boss, rest, horde, boss, rest, better guns, horde, boss, rest, flip a switch, etc...

While the end of each map is a fun 10 minute king of the hill game, it's exactly the same with each map. I really wish they had thought out the objectives. It's sad that you can get better objectives from some Joe Nobody making a map on zpanic than with this $50 glorified, "end all" zombie game.
While the versus mode is cool, the wait time for the zombie players in game is very annoying. And the lack of choice of what boss you are is additionally frustrating. It'd be nice if you could play as a regular zombie as you wait for boss spawn. Also, a custom spawn limit for boss zombies might be nice to give survivers a better or worse chance.

I am really hoping that as updates and mods come out, we will see different objectives, more than basic weapons, and more playable zombies (and zombie choice).

    All in all,
Buyer beware, this game is NOT worth $50, but with good updates may be in the future.

The Director does an excellent job of applying some randomness to each campaign so you have to be constantly thinking tactically. Easy and Normal provide an environment where, unless you are set upon by Special Infected or a Horde, you can roam the map with impunity, the pinned mechanic works wonderfully and a lot of energy and attention has gone in to the visual and auditory style of the game (on my computer, the game is visually beautiful, in a dark and macbre way.) I don't even mind the fact that we're limited to only 4 skins for the Survivors and 6 skins for the special infected (altho, there are effectively thousands of skins for the horde). The voice acting is excellent also, and there is enough variety that you could probably play for a year and not have heard every line of speech. Where the game really falls down though is in the online multiplayer, which is a crime of epic proportions when you consider that this is a multiplayer game only. Matchmaking is barely functional, matching you to difficulty levels (putting you in an Expert game when you asked for a Normal one) and styles (A Versus game instead of a Campaign) and connection issues (joining you to a full game 4 times in a row) and connection issues (repeatedly timing out even when you've got "4 bars" good latency and matching you to servers on another continent where everyone's latency is "1 bar" bad bad bad.) I play, and will continue to play, and will even look forward to both fan released content and content released by Valve. I won't even hold this title much against Valve, since they purchased the title well in to it's development and had to live with the flaws of it's original developers. But, I am disappointed. 6 our of 10. Expand

Amazing game. Picked it up at 5pm and couldn't put it down until 2am. It has exciting game play and when you play with friends it gets even better. I was skeptical of versus mode but its a lot of fun to be the zombies. My only complaint in reference to that is that is the spawn system is picky but you get used to it after about 5 mins.

John S, you say that L4D is a 'zombie survival horror' erm... no its not, in many reviews, publishings, articles, it cleary says, its not a 'SURVIVAL'. The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.

The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
