The fact that you play as a team holds you back. It takes only one bad player on the team to make a crappy score in survival. The other mode makes you wait for the action when survival throws you in it so I pick survival. In this game the only reliable player is you. When you think someone has a good score sometimes its because they glitched so you can rely on that either. This game The fact that you play as a team holds you back. This game is so far the best game I have ever played. I'm very addicted to this game and i can't stop playing. I'm always thinking about this game at school and everywhere I go. Why are you bothering to read this review to buy L4D? It will be an inferior game in less than 3 months. You will have next to no further content for these next 6 months due to L4D2's attention. Buy this game and you can kiss the next 10 weeks of free time you thought you had. This game is exponentially addictive, with its Survival, Versus, Campaign, and Single player mode. If you are handy with the DPS's steel, dive right into a Online Campaign game, grab an uzi or a shotgun and start blating away. Be careful, friendly fire hits are actually realistic here, especially in Expert. Accidentally shoot your teammate in the back with an uzi? He is going down.... fast. Cover each other and remember to always move forward. Maybe wanna see how brains taste? Jump into a versus game and cooperate with you teammates to set up ambushes and deadly traps, maybe hit that damage pounce off the building, maybe peek around from a corner and vomit over them..... or just sneakily pull the last one over the side of whatever vertical object makes the biggest SPLAT! Want to play that endless zombie panic, where ammo is tight and you wish you had a baseball bat? Check out survival... grab some propane tanks and gasoline cans, set them out at key choke points, flip the switch and start mowing them down, blowing them up, or making them do the zombie disco inferno. My origonal score for this game would have absolutely been a 10, but the lack of content is a killer. more than a year after release all they could come up with is hijacking the MOD community's ideas. 1 new minimap, not a full campaign. Good news is the mods are making up for Valve's stupidity, creating their own maps, betaing them, fixing them, and releasing them to the public. Even though the game is a year old and change, still expect some bugs, some more annoying than others. Steam's platform is questionable as well, often not allowing you to connect to something as simple as a friends list, not allowing you to one-click-join a friend's game from desktop. It adds up, and quickly at that. Lastly, you have the first promised main update to l4d1, which was to include new guns ("no re-skins whatsoever", valve's own words) and a bazooka, RPG, whatever your name preference..... Still waiting. 9 months. GG True score for this game should be 50/100, because being pathetically late on your promises and cashing out just a year in, is just ridiculous. Hindsight says the only time this game was worth buting was a 1/2 price weekend deal for $20. Even then, its questionable. Expand

Let's start with something I have to say. I do not like zombie games. The idea of mowing down a horde of brainless flesh simply doesn't appeal to me. I do however, love L4D. Why? The zombies have brains (almost). Upon picking up the game at my local store (For 19.99), I was shoved into a scenario called Dead Air, which takes place in an airport. The graphics in the game Let's start with something I have to say. The graphics in the game aren't thrilling, but it's source. Source is becoming old technology. However, if you're not a graphics nut, and gladly jump into the original Doom and enjoy it (as I do) you have nothing to worry about. The suspense throughout the game is great. I often found myself looking behind me, guns ready only to find that it was my ally closing a door. The immersive qualities combined with the weakness of a lone wolf character make sticking together vital. The most impressive feature of the game (aside from the gameplay) is the audio. Different boss zombies make different noises when they become a threat. The Witch cries and shrieks, and the Tank stomps and is accompanied by a music change. (play with headphones) The gameplay is the flawless shooting you've come to expect from valve. Fully customizable controls (on PC), fermiliar weapons (for CS players especially) and great hit detection, all of the guns feel satisfying and rival each other in performance. One aspect of the guns I loved was the fact that according to the situation ahead (This only happens on a re-run of a level) I would change weaponry. E.g. Use a shotgun for the corridors in No Mercy, and switch to an assault rifle for the rooftop shootout. The game utilizes player mistakes to increase the difficulty. If a survivor shoots a boomer right next to the party, Loads of zombies swarm in. Cooperation between survivors is essential to survival. On the negative side, There arent many weapons to fool around with. Oh, and my fiancee keeps yelling at me for stumbling into bed at 6am. Expand

This is quite possibly one of the best first-person-shooters I've ever played. The action is constantly thrilling, the idea itself is absolutely brilliant, and the recent addition of Last Stand makes 4 player co-op a must. All in all, this is one of the greatest things Valve Software has ever put forth. This stands alongside with some of the best PC games created since the original Half-Life.

Great fun, decent game. The first campaign will leave you wanting more and more. Yet as soon as you play the other campaigns you notice that they are all sort of the same. Its still a fun game but the lack of variety in modes and the after a while predictive enemies makes this game give you a unfinished feeling. Such as clans, steam friends with the game (almost all of my friends on steam now own this game), or even people you see at school (IDK if this counts as RL buddies cause u might not like em). Not having friends does not give any reason to give it a score of 1 and no reason to dislike the game. I have 3 RL buddies that live about a mile from me that have the game and about 100 clan members, all of which can play L4D and stomp the average pub. Then going into content wise, some people who can actually use their pc will mod L4D with different maps that are used by many and play with buddies, and Valve has already givin us lighthouse and there might be more maps in the future, (my L4D has all custom skins, witch and tank sounds, and about 30 custom campains/survival/versus maps on it that I use on a server that I have admin on. So please dont spam hate messages cause u cant get buddies, so far I have found the gameplay nothing less then enjoyable, and hopefully you will get a good experince playing sometime in the future. (Also if people kick you without exlaining why, its probably because that if they tell you that they are kicking for a buddy, most people start shooting them or jump off an edge resulting in player death and a handicap to their team. This is coming from someone who, litterally, has beat the game inside and out, then played it more, and still plays it to this day. I've played co-op, campaign, even the newly released survivor modes. I have every achievement possible, done all there is to do. But... only four campaigns? I was hoping for more campaigns, not a single level you can't escape with a light house. Sure, the developer kit will probably be released soon and people can make their own maps... but if there aren't some more official maps released as well Im going to be let down again. There's only so much we as a community can do, honestly. What makes a big part of the game fun is the survivors, their quirks, the dialogue they say to one another. From Francis's frequent reminders of everything he hates to Bills constant complaint about walking up and down stairs and so on, there is absolutely nothing new we as a community can do to make that ourselves. There's just so much more Valve could have added to the game by now and they haven't. I know plenty of my friends I've played with stop to "take a break" from the game because they feel the same, whether they actively say it or not. For how much it cost, there should have been more content. Sure, the replayability is awesome. I've spent over a hundred hours, probably closer to two, playing about 4or 5 hours worth of content. So think how much better the game would be with another 4 or 5 hours of content. That's right... I want at least another 4 campaigns... and no, I don't want a left for dead 2, I want more for this one. I've already heard about it... really what's stopping that from being more new content? New characters to play as, new levels to choose from? I think Valve would be doing everyone like me a diservice if they did anything less, especially considering games like half life and the super fantastic orange box. Seriously, look at all your fans cheering you on here, giving you the benefit of the doubt. Don't let us down. I'm not even saying give us our money's worth... live up to your already stellar reputation... give us what you already know your loyal community deserves. Once again, prove you can go above and beyond all our expectations, it's what put you where you are now after all. Until then, I don't think I can give the game anything better than an 8. Expand

Left 4 Dead managed to be the top (in my opinion) in contributing to "zombie apocalypse" theme in the game category. Though not a very horrifying or scary game, it does a wonderful job at keeping you aware of your surroundings and on your toes. There will be at times where the suspenseful music plays and waiting for a massive horde to come, or when things are just too quiet that it makes you wonder what will happen next. The AI director does a good job in maintaining a well-balanced fps game that requires some team work (especially in higher difficulties) to eliminate tanks (high health "hulks") and protecting vomited-on teammates from hordes that are only attracted them. Though the game may become repetitive after playing 20 or so times, it still has some fun and play value with the different players that aid you every time. So far, I've played this game for over 5 months and still enjoy it. If you like run-and-gun, massive hordes, tons of shooting, coop games, all in a zombie-themed game...this might be the game for you! Of course, if you don't like that kind of stuff, this might not be a great game for you. Though I've seen people complain that this is like a Half-Life zombie mod for Valve, I do have to agree to some extent. However, it is probably the best "zombie mod" of all if it had to be compared so lowly as to be called a "zombie mod". Overall, great game of its kind! Expand

Of course, some people can ruin a gaming experience, but about 90 percent of the time you'll get in a game with some cool people, or just play with friends (more fun anyways). OK, in R L's way down there, he's also wrong. I suppose survival mode is a preference, but they've already released community map tools. It's nothing like HL2 - much faster and more intense. The lack of weapons is for mere simplicity and a bit of realism. Games like HL2 and (sorry for the generic example) Halo have a lot of weapons because there are a lot of different situations, requiring different weapons. L4D is just killing zombies. Plain and simple fun. Oh, and there was a user-made mall level BEFORE the development tools were released. And remember, this is Valve. VALVE. Look at TF2. Its been out for close to 2 years, and updates of all kinds are still flooding out. Oh, and to prove that I'm not a fanboy, I do have some problems with the game. The AI wont follow you, they have to kill EVERYTHING before they go on. In one section, you have to climb ladders up an elevator shaft. Rather than climbing up, my AI buddies stood around shooting at smokers and were soon dragged to their deaths. Then again, its a Co-Op game. Bring Friends. Expand

I woudn't say its bad (its gameplay was really origional back then) but I woudn't say its worth even $20 when i got it during 2008 thanksgiving. Why? well, its mainly because players easily get sick of the same gameplay after a while (its like play HL mod SvenCoOp with the same map over and over again), valve had made it such that the game has "ALOT" of restrictions, and very very little freedom to explore new tactics. for example, there's hardly any weapon to choose from except the assault, sniper rifle and shotgun. One of the most annoying thing is that there's NO melee weapons! NONE! (except pushing zombies away with ur hands). After 5 months of casual time to time playing, I've convinced myself that Valve isin't going to make any map or content update that would make the game worth my time. The survival mode is just...rediciluously hard and "Bad". OH, and did i mention...NO CUSTOM MAPS, NO MODS, NO MAP DEVELOPING TOOLS, HORRIBLE SERVER BROWSER. In terms of gameplay....The zombie verses has been balanced (you konw, for fairness) such that the Hunter can basically pounce on a player without landing on him/her, the smoker and tank takes a considerable damage before they die, the smoker can pull somebody miles away...the list goes on...basically, what valve tried to balance for verses mode didn't really translate well into the survival mode. eventually the gameplay became "ANNOYING" and boring for me. trust me, if you are looking for a fun zombie game, try some CSS zombie mod or perhaps "ZombiePanic Source" (i havnt tried that yet). Save your money, save you time, its not worth $20 unless valve opens up its custom developing tools for modding. (even if they did, i wouldn't strongly reccomend it). Expand

Let's start off by saying that the asking price when I bought this game was $60CAN. Now the real price this game is actually worth content-wise is $5. Only a handful of weapons, 4 playable zombie classes, and even less than a handful of playable campaigns with less than mediocre level design. "Fun, but monotonous," would be my headline for this game. For something that was so hyped up, the gameplay sure feels rather lacking, and the latest update is, to put it bluntly, a great disappointment.

It's rather difficult to express my sentiment on this game, as so much of my disdain for Left4Dead revolves around my admiration and praise for other titles in the "Co-op" genre.

To begin, things I thoroughly enjoyed about this title was the innovation of the infected, the overall graphical quality of the game, and the ability to play as the infected in multiplayer combat.

In this particular title, the zombies are anything but the slow, doddering fools we've all become accustomed to. They sprint, scale walls, tear open windows, anything necessary to tear you apart. They're fast, and reaction time is absolutely required to take down each and every one of them. This is a refreshing break from the "walking targets" zombies usually are in other titles.

The graphical quality of this game is absolutely phenomenal. The lighting, the atmosphere, the detail put into a brick wall on the side of a building. The attention spent on visuals in this game makes for a truly visceral experience. My only gripe is with the weapon models, in which it appears that the weapons are incorrectly scaled to the player's hands. The guns seem more like toys, and this only becomes increasingly apparent with the larger, more powerful items.

Finally, the ability to play as the infected. Nothing is more exciting than leaping from rooftop to rooftop as the Hunter, or plowing through a level as the Tank. It's especially satisfying to play as the infected, especially once you've exhausted the Story Mode gameplay.

This leads me into the numerous qualities of this title that left me feeling rather disappointed. Namely, the short-lived novelty of Story Mode, the terrible representation of Survival Mode, the "Matchmaking" system required for online play, the absolute requirement for you to stick with your team, and the overall lack of "fear" that should be paramount in any survival-horror game.

First, the Story Mode gametype is extremely exciting for the first-time player. Everything is new and fresh, and the fear aspect really kicks in when you hear a sound just around the corner and you're forced to investigate it in order to push on. However, once you've completed your first level, you've essentially played them all. Monotony is the cornerstone of this title. Each level is essentially the same (save a few scenarios) and once you know what to listen for, the special infected become less of an intense conflict and more of a minor annoyance.

Second, the "Survival Mode", if you can call it that. Personally, when I hear the word "Survival", I think of just that notion, the ability to survive a scenario and walk away victorious. However, Left4Dead's "Survival Mode" would better be described as "Let's See How Long We Can Last Against Unending Waves of Enemies" mode. The Survival Mode is nothing more than a last-stand scenario, in which you and three teammates hold out against the onslaught of infected for as long as possible. There is absolutely no closure to this mode, only a ticking clock at the top of your screen, measuring how long you survive before you and your team are finished off. This irks me, because I like to feel like I've completed something when I play a game. Survival Mode leaves me wanting more...

Next, the Matchmaking system, as required for all types of online play. This system requires you to log into Steam Friends and, rather than using a standard server browser, syncs you up with a populated server at random. This system would be fine, were it not a complete failure 50% of the time. More often than not, I find myself connected to servers where my latency would be well above 200ms (were there a latency measurement system in this game). This leaves me with terrible lag, a general inability to effectively communicate with my team, and frequent disconnects that leave me frustrated and unwilling to try to reconnect. The only alternative to a random selection of servers is to play with your friends on your Steam Friends list. This system, however, is also broken. Once you and your friends have joined a lobby, the game proceeds to randomly select a dedicated server for you to play on, which again results in a terrible connection 50% of the time. All of these scenarios require you to be signed into Steam Friends, which simultaneously comprimises your privacy as a player. Suppose you wanted to just have a carefree game of Left4Dead with nobody to bother you. Thanks to the matchmaking system, this is relatively impossible.

The absolute requirement for you to stick with your team is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this title. When I think of "Co-op" gameplay, I think of a multitude of people working together in order to achieve a common goal. With the added requirement for you to stick together at all times, this effectively compromises individual exploration (teammates scouting ahead to see what's coming next and reporting back to the team) as well as the ability for your team to work on multiple tasks simultaneously. If you split up, the AI Director immediately recognizes this, and before you know it, an unending horde is unleashed on your team, and everyone is slaughtered. This inhibits players from working on separate tasks, and forces the team to play through the entire scenario as one big bunch, shooting in all directions in order to survive. Simultaneously, the ability for special infected to cripple your player, requiring that someone free you from their grasp, is the final nail in the coffin for individual exploration. God forbid that you branch off from your team to explore a secondary location for items, a Hunter will pin you and that will be the end of your character. The single saving grace of individual play was the ability to melee constantly, forcing the infected off of you, and giving you ample time to react and save yourself. This feature, however, was removed with the latest patch, rendering your individual contributions useless.

Finally, the overall lack of "fear" is what made me put down this game for good. Because of the linear gameplay, you and your team are required to push ahead, since you are inevitably traveling from Point A to Point B. Due to this singular requirement, it seems less like you are being hunted, and more like you are hunting zombies. If you hear something just around the bend (like a Smoker cackling and wheezing), you can't hunker down and wait for him to find you. Instead, you must push on ahead, wait for him to pop out, and then dispose of him. For me, the fear aspect of Co-op survival games comes from the ability to have creatures pursue you, rather than you pursuing creatures. Running away, and knowing that something is chasing after you, is absolutely terrifying to me. Left4Dead misses out on this entire notion, as each scenario requires you to push ahead, hold your ground until the area is secure, and then continue pushing ahead. Overall, the lack of fear results in a lack of immersion, and Left4Dead just assumes the role of "casual game" rather than "pulse-pounding thrill ride".

Overall, I was initially pleased with Left4Dead's gameplay, at least for the first few hours of gaming. However, once I became more experienced in the game mechanics, the excitement drop-off was intense, and now I find the game rather dull and uninteresting. For the initial $50 I had spent on this title, I can assure you that it's not worth it. If you purchase during one of Steam's 50% off weekends, however, I'd say it's a pretty decent game at $25 or less. All I can say is, don't believe the hype like I did. It will leave you disappointed.

There are only 5 "boss" (that is used very loosely because there is only one true boss in my mind and thats the Tank) mutations in this game. Really only the Tank can be considered a boss, the rest are just mutations: Boomer, Smoker, Hunter, Witch, and Tank The rest of the game's enemy list is comprised of zombies. There are only 4 scenarios, each with at most 4 map sections. Each play through it will only take an average player that actually plays the game rather then running through the map around 35 to 45 minutes to beat. This means that there is little actual game play time, only around 5 hours. The multiplayer is supposed to be where its at. But verses mode is severely unbalanced and the Co-Op campaigns can easily be ruin by bad players or idiots the run through the map and leave the rest of the team behind in the dust to fend for themselves. Overall, unless the content update in April brings around 2 nre maps to each scenario and 2 new scenarios or ties the current scenarios together and adds new boss infected and new weapons, this is the first game I think i could say shame on Valve for, its a money grabber that leaves us gamers wanting a hell of a lot more then we got or will ever get from valve. In the commentary, forgot where exactly, there is a node where one of the devs says in summery that they skipped out on making lots of content because they wanted the community to make it for them, and that to me is B.S lol. There's no way to pick a server, the search apparently randomly picks a server (if you're lucky enough to even get that far, since some people can not find servers even if they search for hours). There could be several improvements to gameplay and probably worst of all is the versus bot AI. If you don't have four human players on the survivors' team, each bot is a handicap. They are totally WORTHLESS. The only thing they're good for is carrying an extra medkit, and if they start healing, you better kill that spark-brained piece of pixelshit before you lose a kit. There could have been a lot more room to improve the cooperative play, but that being said, this game is a huge leap forward. Although arguably lacking in content Left 4 Dead is by far one of the greatest zombie games of our time. The intensity and bonds between your team make for some incredible moments in gaming. Plus you can play in a versus scenario as the super zombies you will come to loathe in the campaign. all that with more content already on the way and in the works, well done Valve.

Quite an addictive game, especially in the beginning. The intensity and movie-like atmosphere is great. In it's current state it runs out of maps pretty quickly. According to my profile, I have played Left 4 Dead for approximately 25.6 hours. I feel that is enough experience to give this game a review. For starters, there are the pros. The graphics are pretty good and the gore level is such that I wasn't too overwhelmed, yet at the same time the shooting of a zombie's head so that it explodes was quite rewarding. The graphics are pretty good and the gore level is such that I wasn't too overwhelmed, yet at the same time the shooting of a zombie's head so that it explodes was quite rewarding. Other rewarding aspects of the game included the Versus mode in which players take turns playing the Survivors and the Infected. While the Survivors try to, well, survive, the Infected's job is to essentially use teamwork to take the Survivors down. The two teams then switch their roles with the Survivors becoming Infected and vice-versa. While the online co-op can be severely crippled by several things (which I will touch on), a good team makes this game great. There is nothing like a team that wants to succeed and knows what they're doing. Positive aspects of this game also include a solid amount of reply value, on which the game truly relies. If you aren't willing to play the four core "movies" that are offered over and over again, do not buy the game and then complain that you didn't get your money's worth. While I agree that the game could use with two or three times the levels, the maps in place allow for enough variation that one doesn't get too insanely bored. My advice? Everything in moderation. Now for the cons. Like all online games, you're going to get your 10-year-old kid who, because sometimes there is no God in the world, has a mic and insists on screaming into it. Other multiplayer issues include a disturbing amount of lag caused by some of the dedicated servers as well as the fact that the computer picks which room you join and which sever your room plays in. Another flaw is the extremely limited amount of multiplayer. With only two of the four "movies" available, the multiplayer can get old, again why Left 4 Dead is best in moderation. I have not really begun to delve into the vastness which is this game. There are tons of nuances which allow for a steller and varying gameplay experience. The flipside of this is that there are also things that can make your gaming experience one of the worst, which is why Left 4 Dead got varying reviews: some had a horrible first experience and put it down right away, while some played it for 5 minutes and posted a review with as many exclamation points as possible. The truth is that Left 4 Dead will be a great experience for team players who are willing to be patient and understand that it may take an hour to find a suitable team. However, this game is a total waste of money for you Leeroys out there (you know who you are.) In short, buy this game, but don't expect a masterpiece. Expect an enjoyable game best taken bit by bit. Yes, it will have its fair share of flaws, but every game does. What will make or break this game is the amount of support Valve will give it. If Valve can release more maps (and no, I'm not talking about making the two "movies" not available in Versus mode playable, which is a cop-out), the game will have a higher re-play value. However, the company can only do so much. Once again, Left 4 Dead is what you make it. You can enjoy it or you can bitch about how crappy your team is. Either way it's your money. Oh, and I forgot: !!!!!!! Expand

Please look at all of the new content being released for TF2 (the official content, mind you, I'm sure there's many times that volume in unofficial). In all likelihood, this is a good indicator of what's to come for L4D.

it's fun for the first two or so times, but it get's repetitive thereafter from the lack of variety in enemies, maps and of course the weapons, which are really basic and plain to say the least. There's a lack of weapons, a lack of enemies, a lack of levels (4 campains broken into 5 smaller levels, takes about 40 minutes to do a campain, 50 minutes max, so that's 4 hour of gameplay, which is very very poor for a full commercial release. You get more length from Pac Man) and a lack of choice within those levels (you run, gun, pick up med kit, heal buddy, recieve snidey remarks from children, hit a scripted trigger, enter zombies, repeat). The way it was advertised and the length it was in development made me expect more from it, especially the price tag and the fact it's a full commercial release. I've seen mods with more content than this, and those guys don't get paid! The user interface needs some serious work, you dont even get to choose what server you join, the computer picks for you and 9 times out of 10 it picks a laggy server in verses mode even though you clearly clicked co-op (and vice versa). If you're like me and remember people names, you'll remember the people from games that were total idiots, or kids and won't want to play with them, unfortunatly you cant see who you're joining till your loading the server up and the joy of that is when it picks the server you've just left 4 times in a row. Not good. Also using quick match takes forever as it starts connecting to full servers and bounces you back to the menu, it did this to me a wopping 17 times before i finally gave up and headed onto some better, ie/ TF2. TheUI can be fixed quite easily, but the length it's been out suggests to me they aren't going to do it. And now the gameplay, fun when you join chaps that actually want YOU to live as well as themselves, but the chances of that happening is very small. I've only joined a few games where team work has actually been used. Most of the time it's just every man for himself and first guy to the med kits heals as many times as possible so the others suffer (there's only 4 at each point, one each). I remember my frst Tank sighting, I was pummeled as everyone ran away from it (me being arrogant thought my shotty would blast his face off, I was greated with a big meaty fist), whilst he beat me to a pulp the others killed him, then refused to help me up and ran away hitting the 'Laugh' key, leaving me to slowly die whilst casting a vote to kick me. I really felt the love in my first ever game. My advice, if your looking for a team game with loads of content and replay value, by TeamFortress 2, it's got more to offer, isn't anywhere near as expensive and doesn't contain as many idiots (usually, it has its moments when teh new class packs are released). However, if you like playing the same strech of scenery with the same monsters popping in the same places enjoy navigating through a crappy, broken menu, love waiting to find servers only to be greated with lag and absolutley must play with ignorent, childish morons that you're supposed to work with and help out even though they've shot you in the face, vomitted abuse at you, used all the med packs, left you for dead (I apologise for that) voted to kick you and set you on fire, you must buy this. The players of this game have killed my willingness to give medpacks to others... They're mine... All mine!... *twitches* I don't hate the game, it can be a laugh with mates (when we all have time), but I hate 90% of the people I've played with. People will say it's not teh games fualt that I get thrust into servers with idiots, but it is. There's no way of avoiding mongtard players, there for it is the games fault. You can mute them, why can't you opt to avoid them? And this seriously isn't worth the money Valve are charging for it. If it was £10 and the interface was sorted, it'd get maybe a 6, and if immature planks were banned from life it'd get a 7. If both applied, it'd get an 8. Expand

After four days I am already bored with this game. It has great graphics, high action and great potential. But all that potential is lost in a botched execution. It's the same thing over and over again, all the levels play the same even if they do happen in different settings. And the zombie rushes come at predictable intervals and again they are the same every time.
There is no suspense in the game, no way to develop any kind of strategy aside from killing everything that moves. This is like being in a Rob Zombie mosh pit.

A true FPS. Destroy the Zombie hordes while trying to stay alive is a classic. This game put a twist in, by allowing multiple players to work together. I could go on about health, pain pills and weapons but if you know Valves games, then you will be right at home playing L4D. livewire120v Expand

Wow, this game is just the epitome of gaming, I can't find anything wrong with it! And one of the funnest bits is telling your frinds of the epic finale that happened last night. It is just the game for friends to have pure unadulterated fun with no worries, that is, if you ignore the threat of being bitten!

Left 4 Dead is unlike any other first person shooter I played. Despite its few bugs and lack of extensive content or source developer kit (standard to games using this engine,) it is a remarkable game. I love mowing down hoards of zombies, fighting of hunters a smokers, bashing boomers, crowning witches, and trying to get away from - while shooting - that bloody tank. The only major issue I have with this game is the server system: problems with getting a lobby going and finding servers/lobbies with room for a friend or two. I really think this game is a bang for your bucks, but I do believe it would not be an inconvenience for them to sell it for a bit less. (I want my friends to play it too!) Expand

WOW! This game sucks! I was bored with it after the first day. I spent at least a month on BioShock. That makes it thirty times better! The levels were fun but there are so few of them. I am left asking, "was that it?" Where are the new levels I can try? Co-op mode sucked too. Most everyone I tried to play with sucked and the game has bugs too. There is nothing better than a blast and run saga. Some funny things happen when you blast a Hunter and watch him cartwheel of a pal who a second before was getting munched on, or see the back side of a patient zombie hording after a mate who has been barfed on by a Boomer (watch out for Zoe farting in the lift). I would like to say the things I don't like is the crappy Xbox type match up, which i find need sorting and the fact i would like to see my ping not some colour bars. The worst thing is they stitched all people who pre-ordered with a massive price only to find amazon selling half price on release date (filthy corporate scum). In short its a Valve game which means it will get better and better just like Team fortress 2 which has had some major addons with no cost (unlucky Xbox mob) so consider it as an investment and a very good team player game but remember some times it best to cut your pals lose and "run to the chopper". Great Fun, Even Beter with 3 mates. I've been playing this for 2 months on co-op and still not board, achevments are good and make you want to play more. The updates to the vs mode have improved it and it can lead to hours of fun. I hope there will be new campains added soon to keep peoples interest.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE. Campaign lacks challenge. Versus - are you on a team of rage quitters, lacking cohesion or playing against the opposing team that brings no challenge to your consistent team? Probably both at least a few times. Not to mention how glitch, exploit and lag ridden the game is. Avoid like the plague, another tired Source Engine game.

Left4Dead takes simple pieces and blends them together to form an excellent coop game. Left 4 Dead succeeds through the power of four. However L4D takes it to the extreme. This game should be purchased by you and two or three of your friends if you really expect to get the most out of it. First, let me say I don't like the idea of zombies. I think they are an easy out. That said this game is a blast! Though there are only a few maps (4?), they can be played different ways to keep them interesting. There is a skill challenge competition where you try to master different skills and receive awards during the game play. There is also a versus game where you play one of the 4 special infected zombies. Playing as the special infected is actually rather difficult and quite fun especially when you are playing as the only infected fighting the survivors. I've spent many hours over the weeks since this title was released playing from Ohio with and against friends in Florida, Georgia and DC. It's not gotten boring yet. I have a NVidia 9800GTX OC on an AMD Athlon64 4000+ and am able to play with all settings at their highest. I've also played with an Nvidia 7900GT on the same machine at medium settings. Expand

This game is so much fun. It is one of the few games that even months after i bought it keeps me coming back for more. It also makes people think and work together unlike other shooters where its run in, shoot, die, respawn. This game is totally worth the 50$ for pc or 60$ for xbox.

this is exactly what i expect out of a zombie game: extremely fast action and severe punishment for hesitation. unpredictable events and essentially infinite replay value. the lack of sophisticated weaponry and backstory involving the origin of the infection provides an atmosphere that i believe accurately depicts what it might be like to find yourself surrounded by infectious zombies.this is exactly what i expect out of a zombie game: extremely fast action and severe punishment for hesitation. unpredictable events and essentially infinite replay value. the lack of sophisticated weaponry and backstory involving the origin of the infection provides an atmosphere that i believe accurately depicts what it might be like to find yourself surrounded by infectious zombies.

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.

One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
