The learning curve is a bastard and, while the matchmaking is generally pretty good in terms of finding you opponents, you’re going to die again and again, in awful and hideous ways. It’s grim and beautiful, with no single-player mode outside of the tutorial. And if that sounds awesome – and honestly it is – then you know what to do.

Hunt: Showdown is fantastic. The pleasure is immediate and very long-lasting as long as its difficulty does not upset you. It's a visceral and immersive experience that you should absolutely not miss if you are a fan of cooperative games. After 202 hours spent on it, starting from the first days of its Early Access, the situation is clear : Hunt: Showdown is an amazing FPS and it won't be forgotten.

Despite the courageous setting choices and high standards, Hunt: Showdown is an exceptional shooter that occupies its own small niche in times of dwindling Battle Royale hype with innovative ideas and perfection of balanced gameplay.

Little did I know that in being tasked with capturing gameplay for week one of early access that Hunt: Showdown would go on to become one of my all-time favorite video games. I’ve actually had to refrain from expressing many of the countless aspects I love. Fortunately, for Hunt’s sake, the majority of its glaring issues were resolved prior to the launch of 1.0. Aside from rare connection issues, Hunt: Showdown is unequivocally one of the best PvPvE experiences of this generation. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you’re a junkie for hardcore, competitive, survival-based multiplayer in a horrific setting, I strongly recommend paying a visit to the bayou.

Hunt: Showdown has a level of complexity that surpasses many other titles, allowing it to excel in areas such as tactics and gunplay.

A great competitive shooter if you are willing to invest time and can accept the slow character progress.

Hunt: Showdown is a unique entry in online multiplayer from Crytek who brought tons innovations to the genre. Poor server quality aside, which can be easily fixed in the future, Hunt: Showdown is one of the most unique games in recent years.

Hunt: Showdown offers one of the most strenuous multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had and I loved every second of it. There are some defeating lows and victorious highs that come with its addicting PvPvE gameplay. While it definitely has some things that it still needs to refine with its overall formula, as it stands, it’s a really solid game for those into horror elements and hardcore FPS gameplay.

With its horror setting, slow-paced gameplay and unforgiving permadeath Hunt: Showdown is one of the most interesting FPS of this generation. An easy game to recommend if you like the idea of hunting big bad monsters and don't mind the random server problems.

Hunt Showdown is a good alternative for fans of competitive and hardcore online fps. It's engaging, intense and immersive to the point of nervous exhaustion. Its eccentric personality doesn't make it a game suitable for everyone, but for the same reason those who appreciate it will do it viscerally.

Hunt Showdown is an online FPS that will give you hundreds of hours of emotions and fun. Grab a friend and get hunting in a gritty and ruthless world, but be advised: newbies will have a hard time. [Eurogamer Italy Recommended]

Hunt: Showdown doesn’t try to do a lot of things beyond its core mission, and the challenging gameplay and limited selection of maps — though they are expansive and interesting — might be a barrier to long-term enjoyment. Assuming the developers keep infusing the game with content, Hunt: Showdown is a fresh take on the genre that has already become a bit stale.

Hunt Shodown is an excellent title in almost all respects. The permanent death of the hunter could make some players turn up their noses, but once they get into Crytek's game schemes, they manage to live with this choice.

Hunt: Showdown is a little bit DayZ, a little bit PUBG and a little bit Resident Evil. This initial release is strong, with plenty of room to expand. Eventually, new maps, weapons and enemy types will be needed to maintain interest. Hunt: Showdown may not technically be a battle royale game, but it shares enough of the genre’s DNA that I wouldn’t be surprised to see a battle pass in the near future.

The work is raw, but not ruthless to the point of being frustrating, especially for those who are used to the "winner takes all" policy.

Hunt: Showdown is an atypical competitive shooter. A different way to see the online FPS videogames, with great settings and PvP-PvE features.

Hunt: Showdown is an incredibly intense and sometimes nerve-racking game that will require a lot from you. In return, it delivers an experience and a world you will have a hard time finding anywhere else.

Hunt: Showdown is a clever, hard-nosed FPS that doesn't have enough substance to be truly essential yet.

Crytek have made something that feels truly distinct with Hunt: Showdown. The tense, high stakes PvP action blends well with southern swamp-horror PvE to create a fresh and compelling multiplayer experience, though the extreme lethality of the combat and a current lack of content might leave you hunting for a sale.

Hunt: Showdown is a great blend of battle royale and survival horror; one that is an enjoyable, but also unbelievably tense, and merciless gaming experience. Apart from being quite rough around the edges, its unrelenting nature (courtesy of its surprisingly cruel permadeath mechanic), and almost awful matchmaking logic, make this a game for only a few - a few who must put hundreds of work on it, if they don't won't to spend most of their time staring at the words "You're Dead!"

I came away from Hunt: Showdown a little let down. The premise is good, the setting is something new, and many of the gameplay loop elements are unique. Better still, the combination of PvPvE sets the stage for something amazing, but that stage is just too damned small. With too deep a grind, and too few maps, Hunt: Showdown has just too little content (currently) to match its ambition. But hey...at least the hunting is cool!

An online horror shooter packing some suitably devilish details, but slow pacing and cruel penalties don’t give you much reason to return.

There's a lot that works in Hunt: Showdown, from its setting and creatures design to its strong blend of PvE and PvP action. Like the bayou, the game first appears sort of quaint, unique, and interesting to explore. But below the surface, once you get into the thick weeds of it, you end up feeling like there's plenty of places you'd wish to have traveled.

Crytek’s managed to craft a palpably tense and terrifying shooter that’s equal parts survival and competition, but it still needs to solve the problems of players exploiting the system by camping on escape routes, an unreliable AI, and other, basic performance issues. [Early Access Score = 75]
  2. I’m not in for the long-haul, but I’m pleased to have a game where escape isn’t just a booby prize. And one with yet another terrifying spider.

This game is a massive joke. There is no way this should be for sale. It's simply not worth any money. If you are able to survive through the crashes and bugs and disconnects and server outages, you feel lucky - the game completion rate is about 50%. The game has been out for over a month to paying Steam users and Crytek has not released one single patch that improves stability. They instead opted to take everyones money and not address the issues. Sad. it had potential. Refunded and will never play again. Avoid at all costs. Full Review »
