Going back to the roots of hitman was a great move and although there were a lot of teething issues with the staged release I personally believe having the opportunity to experience the contracts and each map in detail without skipping through the entire story made the experience better.

    Pros:
    - Each map is huge and has a lot of life. Each level has very interesting concepts and overall keeps each mission unique.
    - The graphics are amazing and unlike previous hitman games there are loads of methods of assassination.
    - Replayability, currently on around 250 hours
    - The developers have added a lot of content and keep adding more, even with only 6 maps, there are bonus missions, contracts, escalations etc. Previous reviews stating the game is too easy have yet to experience one of the later updates adding the new harder difficulty option, which adds a lot of challenge to the existing content.

    Cons:
    - Voice acting did ruin some of the immersion
    - No Sniper briefcase
    - The last bonus mission was not as good as the previous 2.

    Overall:
A great game and I commend the developers for their work, this is a huge step up from Absolution and I am worried that all the reviews asking for story will bring back another absolution(hitman has never had amazing stories, overall the cinematics between each mission were pretty good).

I really look forward to another hitman game and if it is a continuation from this one I would definitely pre-order.

Hitman aims high. It also misses a lot. Yet to an extent, the game delivers, especially with the return of sandbox gameplay and all the possibilities that define IO's signature series.

This game is up with some of my absolute favourite games. The levels are absolutely excellent and you can just plunge hours and hours into each level with all he escalation levels and trying to complete every objective. My only gripes are the always online requirement and the fact saving can be a bit broken

The story. She is very ok, but let's agree that nobody plays hitman for the story. The protagonist has no goal and does not seem to seek anything, it is just a tool. But my real problem with the story is because it is divided into chapters, the end of the game is totally open, they could have closed an arc or something like that and therefore my 'low' grade.

The graphics are so beautiful and the cutscenes even more (even being a billionaire).

The soundtrack adds practically nothing to the experience.

Expand

Hitman isn't a very bad game, but it definetly suffers from several problems that keep it far from the good game it could have been. So, what's good and what's wrong with it ?

Pros: * Level design: I must be honest, levels are huge and well made. And they feel alive. Very good point on that. * Graphics: Hitman is not the most beautiful game of the year, but is far from being bad.

    Cons:
    * Online: Why is that ?! The game is purely solo ! I played all the Hitman series because of that, so why would I want to be online to play this one ? Damn it !
    * Ease: Everything is way too easy in this new Hitman. Opportunies are fun for 5 minutes, but that's it. Without a proper online connection, you can't have all the fun you paid for.
    * Story: what story ? Oh wait... there no real story in that game, just some "teasing" to keep you buy the next "season".
    * Season: really ? Selling the game piece by piece ? With no proper reason ?

No more dual-wielding Silverballers, no more weapon-costumization, no more "media-coverage" of your killings when ending missions, less maps and allways online-DRM.

    Handholding: The Game!

The game is designed around force-feeding you information everywhere you go. It shows you the state of enemies, sneaks X-Ray-Vision into the game and does handholding for even the smallest tasks.
Sure, all can be turned off, but some areas are so cramped that you'll be catching yourself doing the X-Ray just "one more time" (instead of letting the camera show you the position and make you figure out the best way of approach!)

Are the huge maps beautiful and full of life?
    Yes, they are.
But there are only 6 maps! (!!!)

And where Blood Money gave you replayability with enhanced guns, guns you could mod and upgrade with your earned money (none of that here!),
here its just some new "tasks" to do,
all of them right in your face.

No more figuring out different strategies for yourself, the game tells you nearly every way of kills!
Even with the handholding turned off, the "online contracts" are shoved into your throat, giving away all of the pre-planning!

The story tries to demystify 47 again, with painful dialogue and a plot thats written like bad fanfiction by a teenager (I saw it got even worse with HITMAN 2 !).

Like I said: Even with all the hand-holding deactivated, the game plays like on rails, and tries
to hang the carrot in front of your face like "new weapons" (Pistols shoot all the same btw!) or entry-points.

The controls are dumbed down (again) and illogical at times (E for use but G for different actions).

    ALLWAYS ONLINE:
In case your internet-connection dies (like - who knows? Provider needs to fix the cables, slow internet, playing somewhere without internet),
    your GAME DIES!

In Offline you can't change entry-points (you know? the whole point of the f******g "reward"-systen in "Hitman" ?!) and your load-out-screen freezes!

When in Offline, you don't have any statistics after finishing the level. Great isn't it?
(the statistics are ugly anyway, since they don't come in the cool Blood-Money-Styled media-coverage!).

All in all its not a real Hitman-game.
Its more of a puzzle-solving-game, that wants you to finish the puzzle in a specific order and punishes you if you try different ways (especially if these ways involve fire-arms!).

In fact, this game misses its primary purpose and scope, in interest to generate something that is loosely based on hitman mechanics from 10yrs ago, combined with newly developed morality. Neither of which is what this game genre needs. In one hand you can applaud the developers for going back to basics to recreate something close to Blood Money, but in the other hand, isn't this too far basic? Ok, the graphics has changed, but mechanics, and animations, are behind the time. There is simply no sense of "tactical" in this game. Still awkward views and motions. Second, you would expect that openness and simplicity of achieving the task as in BM is one thing that they would have adopted, but instead, while map is open, most actions in the game are triggered. This means that they will not happen unless you are following the series of the events. Very rudimentary, very lazy approach to create more depth. Third, interactions with people around is very unnatural. It feels like interacting with rag dolls. Again, developer implemented very lazzy approach to give NPCs some character by filling the game with chatter, while completely disregarding the AI elements and dynamics which these characters should have. Next, what is up with the morality theme? You all the sudden cannot kill anyone, or you are heavily penalized for killing a "non-target". If this is the route they are taking, then please rename the franchise into CIA Agent (pardon: "CAI"...) and stop eluding the players. Lastly, armament. Yes, once pride of the Blood Money, having the great toolbox of weapons and accessories, is simply gone. Why bother with all those guns if all I ever need is suppressed pistol??...totally pointless.
What are the good things in this game? Well, definitely graphics. The Square Enix's ambition to create almost photo realistic graphics in their games is unmistakable. All in all:
    Graphics: 9
    Sounds: 8
    Animations: 5
Dialog: 0 ... has it ever occurred to this developer, that one of the best qualities of hitman is being able to mislead and being cunning...how do you achieve that if dude is not even talking..
Game Mechanics and world interaction: 5
    Replayabilty: 6

In conclusion, this is not a hitman. Game can be entertaining, but it is very simple and lacks depth. if they have taken John Vick movie, and dressed the main character as bald guy, they would have made epic hitman game..

An very immersive stealth/assassination game with numerous ways to complete missions --
the variation of gameplay tactics offered for each mission gives the game a good amount of replayability. But in spite of that, Hitman 2016 is highly devoid of a decent plot, character development and overall content; and is made worse by its episodic format.

Great HITMAN game. It's been too long since the last game. Hopefully it doesn't take another few years to develop another title in the series. The graphics are very good and optimized quite well. I only wished there were more missions, overall the game felt very short.

Square Enix's decision to separate the game into several episodes and market the game as a “Season” may interrupt with the storytelling of the game, but it also takes the game back to its roots, putting you in a sandbox full of opportunities and choices. Not all of the episodes are on par with each other and the “Opportunities” helping method makes the game feel a bit too easy and straight forward. But other than that, the game is a great addition to the series and fans of the series (especially “Blood Money” fans) would love it.
