Rather than try and make a quick buck out of cheap thrills, Dynamic Pixels and tinyBuild took the popular trope of hide-and-seek horror and twisted it into something new and creative. There is a great game buried here, as long as the development studio fixes the problems currently plaguing it... And if they can manage to really polish it, then the horror genre has much innovation to offer.

Hello Neighbor has a good idea made badly.

The basic concept is solid, but due to its bad implementation, the game is almost a total write-off.

Hello Neighbor is a frustrating slog through a gauntlet of illogical puzzles that rely on persistence and thoroughness far more than cleverness, observation, or ingenuity. The stealth is hit-or-miss, alternating between feeling too punishing and borderline irrelevant from act to act. Some clever level design and a clear talent for making me feel creeped out eased the frustration, but don’t present enough of a reason for me to recommend anyone put themselves through 15-20 hours of this. I wish I’d just stayed on my own side of the fence.

Unfortunately, only an amount of frustration and badly made game is hidden in the tempting package. For a good horror adventure, you must go elsewhere.

The game is embarrassingly simple in its gameplay, but at the same time it’s incredibly difficult due to a poor technical state and a terrible game design. [Issue#282]

Hello Neighbor is a complete mess with tons of bugs, stupid AI and a confusing storyline. The performance is even worse than the demo version.

A highly problematic product, afflicted by big design errors and a considerable number of technical defects.

Hello Neighbor has some interesting level design decisions, but the game itself feels like it's still in Early Access.

It’s a shame the final version of Hello Neighbor isn’t what we wanted it to be. The great concept is poorly executed, with plenty of issues, ranging from the physics to the AI or the puzzle design.

I honestly didn’t hate Hello Neighbor, but an interesting setup and good intentions don’t make up for sloppy design, unwieldy controls, AI that isn’t half as smart as advertised, and a myriad of other issues. A very specific type of player who loves finding secrets and proposing fan theories may be able to overlook Hello Neighbor’s problems, but most will want to bury the game in the backyard.

Frustrating, buggy and overly dependent on trial-and-error, this is a missed opportunity.

Hello Neighbor is unpolished to the point that it feels unfinished. The overpowered enemy A.I. makes the gameplay miserable; models and animations are stiff, and physics critical to completing puzzles are so woefully uncalibrated that much of the game feels like you’re stacking boxes and hoping for the best. The game falls so short of its genre companions that it’s hard to recommend it to anyone, in spite of its beautiful aesthetic. Hello Neighbor simply isn’t fun or compelling even when it’s working.

The concept for the game is great, level design is solid and the visuals are sometimes nice but the whole thing is painfully underdone. [02/2018, p.46]

An interesting premise, a striking visual style, and a mysterious game world that's bound to keep the gaming community pondering on what's going on in here, Hello Neighbor had the potential to be an iconic classic. Instead, the final release is nothing more than an overpriced, clunky, and incomplete mess of an experience. It's a shame, really.

Hello Neighbor is a game you persevere in due to sheer luck rather than any sort of actual skill, foresight, or cleverness. There's no catharsis, insight, or revelations waiting at the end of the ordeal, just a sort of uneasy malaise over what the images and environments near the end are meant to represent. As such, a simple, appealing concept is rendered inert.

Hello Neighbor is a stealth game for youtubers. It's really annoying and obviously unfinished and as such makes a great theme for a funny video. During gameplay I had three distinct feelings: boredom, discomfort and frustration. And sometimes anger when some flaws looked intentional. Avoid!

Hello Neighbor is incompetent and barely playable as a horror, stealth, or adventure game, in addition to being incoherent as a narrative.

An exemplary “YouTube shocker” of a game. Avoid at all costs.

I'm sorry but recommending this game at its current state right now should be considered a crime.

I was super exited for this game after playing Alpha 1 and the ironic thing is Alpha 1 was the best and most stable version of the game, every update since felt like a downgrade and just added more problems to the game. Even after the game is apparently fully developed, I still feel like I'm playing the beta version just slightly more extended. This is by no means a finished game and I'm just sick of these early access games being left half finished or just rushed out with a ton of bugs.
This game does not deserve a rating above 5/10, I don't plan on buying another game made or published by these guys since obviously these devs could care less about the quality of their own games.

Do not buy this game for $30, instead just watch a lets player on youtube, it will be more entertaining than playing the actual game plus its free. :-P

The game still feels unfinished, its riddled with bugs/glitches, a good number of them are game breaking and the A.I. sucks which completely ruins the game for me since the main focus of gameplay is based around the A.I.

Clearly this game was rushed and had little to no care for it when it comes to the quality of the "finished" product, If you still feel like checking it out... Don't buy it for the full $30, wait for it to go on sale for like $15 - $10.

(Hello Neighbor) has a lot of potential and can be a pretty fun game when it works, again when it works. There are so many game breaking bugs that just taints the experience of what would have otherwise been a really good indie game.

(Example Of Some Bugs) These bugs can range from falling out of the map, broken/stuck A.I, textures not loading in and instead has the default Unreal Engine 4 grey checkerboard surface, some cutscenes don't play correctly or freezes forcing you to restart, etc. The most bizarre bug was when the Neighbor Guy got caught up in some collision based objects and gets shot straight up in the air and out of the map, at this point I had the whole (ACT/Level) to myself without worrying about the Neighbor which made that playthrough really boring.

The game isn't always about running from the neighbor, some acts mixes things up a bit and have you playing through some weird dream like sequences which were actually pretty cool visually. Also there is a story, however rather then telling a story through dialogue, its instead told through expressions/body language and even through visual symbolism. But as interesting of an idea this was, It could have been implemented a little better and even when you do start to get some sort of idea of what is happening in the story at the end of the day its just standard at best. That would have been fine however rather then being okay with a standard story, the game leaves me feeling empty inside and that I have wasted my time playing this game, this is all due to the unbelievably disappointing ending. It's like you go to this old house, have a fever dream and then wake up and go back to moving your stuff in the house... that's literally the ending, look it up if you don't believe me.

So the story was a let down, but there are a few things this game gets right. The most noticeable positive thing about the game is it's Eye Candy art style. Even when I read the negative reviews almost all of them had to admit that they liked the art style despite the other flaws of the game. Another thing the game does well is the gameplay, at the start of the review I said its a good game when it works, well when bugs are disrupting your playthrough the game is actually pretty fun. You have a decent sized map to work with when hiding from the neighbor and along side that there are quite a bit of interesting puzzles that get you thinking but are not at hard even for those who aren't very good or even hate puzzles. A lot of the puzzles are based around the way you explore the environment and also physic based as well.

The main focus of the gameplay however is by dealing with the neighbor and it's supposedly amazing A.I. Now i'm just going to say it as it is, the A.I. is kinda dumb and doesn't always work the way its suppose to and I think overall the A.I. was the biggest let down. I wasn't expecting a great story or anything, what originally got my interest was the concept of how the A.I. was going to be used in the game. The A.I. from my first playthrough got stuck/lost 3 times, when you have an A.I. thats not that great fiddling around with traps and other tactics your result is usually going to be disaster. Half of the time the methods he uses to stop me end up being used against him even when I have no part in it. The most common way he gets stuck is when he boards himself in a room that has no other way out and sometimes his A.I. path finding gets confused if you stay in certain areas.
When these things aren't happening you can get some pretty fun and intense situations happening but they can be rare depending on your approaches of playing the game.

So to sum everything up, the game was over hyped and the developers were dishonest about how advance the game really was. (Hello Neighbor) Is not a bad game, its just a disappointing game. Hello Neighbor is sort of like No Man's Sky, both are good games in their own ways but sadly both were rushed, both developers lied about the features of their games and were over hyped by the general public. If all the bugs were fixed and the game had more polished content to offer I would give this game a (6/10) or (7/10) but due to how the game was published, its just left a bad taste in my mouth... this game gets a (4/10).
