I love this game, it's so much fun and it just keeps being fun. Not only is the game loop really great, the builds are so distinct and work so differently with the weapons that each run feels like a different game. The art is amazing, the combat is smooth and fun, the characters are really fun to interact with and the OST is phenomenal.

I honestly can't find a fault in this game that isn't a minor gripe. Sure, some of the poison enemies are annoying and the last biome is built to punish you if you make a boss-killer build. But I am so enamoured with the world and enjoying the combat so much that none of it really matters.

Keep in mind that the game also lets you play it in your own pace, with a reduced difficulty mode and the credits being separated from the post-game for people who don't like grinding. The difficulty being adjustable after you progress enough through the game is also something I loved.

If you looked at the gameplay online and thought "this looks interesting" you'll love this game. As simple as that. Just keep in mind that if you are looking for a Diablo-esque experience, this is a bit different. Much more action oriented and built for shorter runs. This Binding of Isaac, but with a lot more control over powerups.

Or maybe just cross-saving between here and the Nintendo Switch, Mac-OS and Linux. This version can give you the ability to transfer your saves from here to Nintendo and the Epic Games Store. This is a great step forward for cross-platforming, even if it doesn’t involve actual multiplayer itself; but the point here is that a game as investing, frustrating yet rewarding as Hades has this function is definitely noteworthy and something other games are SURE to adopt in the future.

The story is great: layered even in its ‘repetitious’ Groundhog-Day-like storytelling, the gameplay is nice and punchy, and the soundtrack adds to the relentless challenge that is Hades. As the Son of Hades, Zagreus must escape his father’s clutches or forever suffer the Underworld’s all-encompassing grasp on the world of the dead. Zagreus must break the cycle and find out the truth about his mother, if he can even get himself there.

Hades is a blast with enough modern vibes and retro ones to make it an experience for newcomers and veteran hardcore gamers alike. Needless to say, this game is a CHALLENGE! But a fun one.

Big fan of their previous games and expected another tame and short ~10 hour game. I WAS WRONG. I'm 50 hours in and I seriously cannot stop playing. This is far and away the game of the year. Best soundtrack, best combat, fantastic voice acting, and so so much replayability.

it is such a f*cking delight of an experience! incredibly addicting, fun, beautifully imaginative in it's reivention and retelling of myths and legendary characters, while also being engaging and with a STELLAR cast who, i'm sure, will be one of the main reasons we keep returning to this. strong contender for game of the year.

If ever there was a "perfect game, this was it. I was fortunate enough to buy this game before it got publicly popular. It blew up recently, and i'm so happy it did. This game deserves nothing but love, because nothing but love went in to making it. The game is flawless. Best RL i have ever played, full stop. 10 of 10.

As far as I’m concerned this game is the GOTY. I got it on the Switch first and even after finishing EVERYTHING I was still craving more, so I had to buy it AGAIN on steam to get the achievements.
    - The story is amazing
    - The game play is snappy and fun - The weapons and boons create a lot of variety - Everything oozes charm - The presentation (music, environments, characters and ui)

Seriously, I tried quite a few Isaac-type games and usually after 1-2h deinstalled it, but this - this is probably one of the best, if not the best game of this genre. The game might seem difficult at first, but rather quickly become easier with upgrades you get, and this is very good! Make no mistake though, this game is still challenging even with all upgrades, but not that crazy challenging like Isaac or SMB. Usually in such games you get no aid in your later playthroughts but your experience. Thus leads to 100+ beginnings of the same 1st level which is doesnt feel great when you have job and family. Hades is not very long if you want just to finish this game - I made it from 18th try. But this is not an end - if you want to reveal whole story, try all weapon upgrades there are even more challenges to overcome.
Very good music, nice graphics, awesome combat system and abilities, challenging bosses. Maybe not a masterpiece, but still very very good game! 10 of 10.

Even Triple A studios barely offer this quality.

But let´s speak about the important part, the game.
It plays super smooth, every weapon feels very different, combined with the upgrades(boons) you get, every run feels different. There is not one overpowered way you have to play to be overpowered, there are many different combinations to make the best of your run.
Roguelite elements are great and make you try "just one more run".

But the superior part, which made it a solid 10, is the storytelling and progressing. Every run you learn something new about the situation, characters and the motives. It is superb storytelling in a genre, where most believed there is no actual way to progress a story.

I highly recommend this game to action fans.

Boons (power ups) come by way of the many Olympic deities you call family, and that personal touch will likely result in you playing favorites... which can come with it's own surprises.

Probably Supergiant's best, and most accessible, game to-date. (Though Pyre remains my favorite.)

You will discover secrets, reveals, twists and know your family, friends, acquaintances and other gods better. I must praise the characters and writing. The Greek legends are full of conflicts between the gods and those are all related to each other. This is transferred well into the game. They are like a family with a lot of problems. The game even won the literary Hugo Award to give you some perspective how good it is. For me this was amazing and I continued even after obtaining the platinum trophy to see the outcomes of some stories. It is well written, enjoyable and gives you always something to kept your interest. The gameplay is like I said a rouge-like RPG. You start each escape run with no abilities and advance through the rooms of the underworld. Each room has rewards like abilities, benefits, items or currencies. Sometimes you can chose between options. This was something I was worried about but it is not the weakness I thought. It is a true strength. In approx 100 runs I never encounter a truly weak set up. I discovered instead some amazing abilities, combinations and different options. Even some abilities I avoided first were good, some even worth reversing my opinion. For example: My least liked weapon became my favorite and the weapon I thought was best became my least used (The game has an interesting system in teasing you to chose different weapons). I admit that I use some abilities or better said set up more often but the different set ups keep it fresh. The next strength are the things you can unlock. There are so many helpful things. Be it new weapons, helpful rooms, appearing treasures, cosmetic set ups, abilities and bonuses. You always have new stuff to do or unlock. Rarely ever have I encounter a game that succeeds in keeping everything this fresh and enjoyable. Then there is the graphic. The art style is excellent and I like the hand draw graphics. For games like this I would always buy an artbook. The music is even better. You will encounter many awesome tracks and there are 2 characters who maybe give you some of the best songs in the game. To round up this experience I did not encounter a single serious bug or glitch. Overall this is my favorite game of the year and deserves my full praise. Never have I encountered a game that keeps being this refreshing from start to finish. Be it the story or gameplay everything is excellent and well thought out. Even the difficulty is correctly balanced as god mode gives you more resistance with each death until you don't die easily. A well thought out system. An easy 10/10 for me Expand

Further, each run earns you a variety of currency types that you may invest any way you'd like to shape your strategies. Best of all are the character portraits and overall art direction. The high contrast and between the thick black outlines and the vibrantly saturated colors gives a dark yet still lively environment.

My only qualm is the lack of random bosses and other events that could help make each run feel more distinguishable. Unfortunately, both the rooms and the enemies are fairly monotonous. While the game is certainly repayable it could be even better with added content. Overall, my favorite game of the year. Excluding my addiction to animal crossing during quarantine.

Hades is a roguelike action roleplaying game where you play as Prince Zagreus, son of Hades, and you are tired of life in the Underworld and want to defy your father by escaping. You take runs through the layers of the Underworld fighting all types of monsters clawing your way to the surface.
Along the way the other Olympians will be trying to aid you by bestowing upon you powers to strengthen your weapons and skills. All in attempts to help Zagreus join them on Mt. Olympus. The boons they bestow upon you are perfectly inline with their characters. Examples being; Zeus granting lightning, Aphrodite allowing chances to charm and weaken monsters, Dionysus can afflict hangover (my personal favorite perks).
There is an interwoven story in the game you discover while playing through escape attempts and increasing your bonds with the cast of characters including Gods, servants of Hades, and Greek heroes.
This game is a beautiful masterpiece that has been given numerous awards, not including game of the year by most publications.
I started playing in early release 2019 and played through most development of the game and extra features they added. Eventually leading to the full release in 2020 where the true ending was added.
It took me 72 successful escape attempts to finish the story and reach the true ending. There are still cosmetic upgrades I could chase, character relationships to increase and push for higher difficulty runs.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
