Hades Review: Positive and Negative Aspects

Hades stands out as a prominent example within the roguelike genre. By examining both its positive and negative aspects, we can understand why the game has gained such popularity.

    Positive Aspects:

    Engaging Gameplay:
Hades delivers fluid and dynamic gameplay. Fast-paced combat requiring quick reactions, a variety of abilities, and weapon choices keep the game consistently exciting and enjoyable. Each attempt necessitates developing a new strategy.

    Storytelling and Character Development:
The game boasts a deep storyline and character development. With each death, you discover new pieces of the story, unraveling the universe and characters further. The relationships between Hades and other characters add an emotional dimension to the game.

    Visual Aesthetics and Atmosphere:
The game offers a visually captivating experience through its elegant art style and atmospheric world design. Each environment and character make you feel like a part of the game world. The atmosphere draws players into the story.

    Negative Aspects:

    Repetitive Content:
Due to the nature of the roguelike genre, the game's content can become repetitive. Iterations might lead to monotony for some players. Even with different gameplay styles, sometimes traversing the same areas can feel repetitive.

    Difficulty Level:
Hades presents a challenging difficulty level. Some players might find this difficulty occasionally frustrating. Enemy combinations and the intensity of certain levels can be demanding.

    Conclusion:

Hades, as a notable representative of the roguelike genre, captivates players with its dynamic gameplay, intricate storyline, and aesthetic atmosphere. Repetitive content and the difficulty level might pose challenges for some players. However, the game's overall quality and entertainment value provide an experience that many players believe is well worth overcoming these challenges for.

Hades' art style is striking, the gameplay is addicting, and the dialogue you receive after every death makes it less frustrating, but the advancement of certain plots is heavily based on luck and the ending is drawn out and anticlimactic.

Pocos juegos he visto tan bonitos como Hades.

The characters are the highlight of the game for sure, every character is very likeable, they all have their own personalities, and they really enhance the story of the game, which is very simple and all around just good.

The gameplay is fantastic, all the power ups and the Boons make it less repetitive, which is a big issue with Rogue-Like/Rogue-Lite games, and I love how Hades tries to stay away from repetitiveness as much as possible, by adding unique dialogue to almost every encounter, it's crazy how much effort was put into this game.

This is quite literally a flawless videogame, the only complain I have is that it's just not really my type of game, but the fact that I enjoyed it that much should tell you how stellar this game truly is.

    Final Rating: "Amazing" ~ 9/10.

The only disadvantage of the game for me is the long main game. The visuals are something else, which I must say because of Supergiant's style of making games, that can be seen in Bastion too, although for Hades, every aspect of the visuals contributes to make the player as immersed as possible, the Underworld emits a scary yet comic feels to the player, the design of the enemies is varied, and the animations are nothing to ignore as well, swift, smooth and above all well made.
The gameplay is also great, each weapon has its own style and way of use, (Personally I like the Spear), although some might feel unbalanced and useless in certain levels or rooms, the varied perks and abilities are also great, but sometimes the Special attack feels completely useless or too slow for the fast paced fights, but still, that adds up to the challenge Hades poses as any other rogue-lite.
The music is great, memorable and quite good to be honest, and it plays quite a part in immersing you into the game's diabolical atmosphere.
Now the voice acting and dialogue, that was my favorite part, the execution is top notch, the comic and hilarious dialogues of some of the Gods is great, some are too good at annoying you as well like Dionysus and his vainglorious behavior, Hermes and his fast way of speaking, Zeus and Poseidon at being the good ol' dumb but good hearted uncles, etc... The emotions that each actor emits through their dialogue is honestly something I've never seen in any other game but rarely, and for that Hades earns a special place in my heart.
In summary, Hades is a great game for those who thrive a fun journey into the realms of hell, all while meeting all the different characters from Greek mythology, so if you're a fan of fast paced gameplay, great visuals and good story telling, this game is right up your alley.

In my first playthrough of Hades, I made some clear gameplay mistakes however the biggest mistake I made had nothing to do with gameplay. I completely underestimated how much I would fall in love with the story, the art, the characters, and I think I know why. If you have played the gambit of Rogue-Like games then the story isn’t what you play for. Binding of Isaac doesn’t have a story arcIn my first playthrough of Hades, I made some clear gameplay mistakes however the biggest mistake I made had nothing to do with gameplay. I completely underestimated how much I would fall in love with the story, the art, the characters, and I think I know why. If you have played the gambit of Rogue-Like games then the story isn’t what you play for. Binding of Isaac doesn’t have a story arc that you get lost in, it’s just there. Hades is so very different, and for fans of rogue-lites who don’t embrace that element of the game, they will miss the best parts of what makes this game a masterpiece.

You are thrusted immediately into the action fueled gameplay, but there’s a subtle difference in the story delivery that I didn’t notice at first even though it was in front of my face. Prince Zagreus is narrating his distasteful thoughts of his father, the brutal god of the underworld Hades from the first moment you take control of him. From there, you find an orb on the ground you interact with that plays a message from the goddess Athena. Zag talks back to it. Supergiant Games found a way to make every single fight, interaction with the environment, gameplay enhancement, and dialogue between characters all tie into the story they were telling.

I didn’t pay attention however, because this was a rogue-lite and I just wanted to move fast and break things. The gameplay was so action packed and fast, that it didn’t feel like I had a moment to spare to appreciate the uniquely woven story into the fabric of each of my runs. These games are about cool builds, getting stronger each run you play, and seeing if you can climb further than ever before, or so I thought. After eight hours of gameplay I learned the hard way that this game was much deeper, and I already wanted to replay through those same 8 hours to pick up on story tidbits I had been skipping the whole time. So I did.

I made a new save and started fresh. I had only done twenty or so runs, so this was no big deal to me, because the gameplay had engaged me enough to this point. In other rogue-lites beating the final boss is merely a gameplay victory that nothing of consequence hinges on. This was different. I wanted Zagreus to escape, because he deserved it. I wanted Hades to lose. My escape mattered and suddenly that meant understanding Zag’s relationships to everyone else in the House of Hades. That’s when I began to first notice the game's relationship system unlocked by gifting Nectars, each time opening new dialogue. I also noticed that with each death suddenly there was a new dialogue option with each character also. They talk about your attempted escape, and your relationship with your father. They are all invested in your success or failure. It all came together like a quilt of unique pieces of cloth. Each square was a different unique nugget I hadn’t seen before.

The game won’t satisfy most rogue-lite die-hards. The gameplay variation in builds, boons, classes, and items pales in comparison to some of the other games in the genre. The layouts and enemies aren’t nearly varied enough to capture your attention alone, and quite frankly your first clear is relatively easy in the end. You are just going to eventually be strong enough to win on raw character power rather than skill. This would leave the typical rogue-like fanboy thirsting for challenge rather unsatisfied, but there is plenty of endgame after unlocking the pact of punishment and hell mode, with endless difficulty scaling. The challenge is there, you just have to speed run to it if you don’t want the story, but try not to for once.

Hades is a perfect game, and a unique title with so many subtle unique features I’d need a few more pages to discuss them. None of them on their own are mind-blowing, but it’s the experience they all work towards that is. You can spend 4 hours sitting and playing, swapping weapons(classes), growing in power and skill. Every time you do experience changes in gameplay, it will be accompanied by seamless storytelling narrated by a host of characters that you can’t help but care about, and want to learn more about. The single unique element of Hades, is that there isn’t a single thing in the game I can think of that isn’t relative to the narrative, and that’s a feat of immersion no other game I’ve played has ever accomplished. If you miss that part, you missed out on one of the best games and stories of the last 5 years.

The story is great: layered even in its ‘repetitious’ Groundhog-Day-like storytelling, the gameplay is nice and punchy, and the soundtrack adds to the relentless challenge that is Hades. As the Son of Hades, Zagreus must escape his father’s clutches or forever suffer the Underworld’s all-encompassing grasp on the world of the dead. Zagreus must break the cycle and find out the truth about his mother, if he can even get himself there.

Hades is a blast with enough modern vibes and retro ones to make it an experience for newcomers and veteran hardcore gamers alike. Needless to say, this game is a CHALLENGE! But a fun one.

The greatest differences between this game to other roguelike are two things:

1- Each time you fail or escape you can collect some items that will make your character stronger in the next runs (darkness, jewelry, titan blood, diamonds, keys). So every new run you will be stronger and stronger. So, in the first runs, it is quite impossible to even defeat the 2nd boss but once you arrive at 35th-40th run you can pretty much always win because you will be super strong if you use everything the game gives you.

2- The story is the great differential, although it isn't an awesome story it has some charismatic characters, and the most important thing, the story makes sense, it justifies why you return to the beggining after you die and why you have to escape the underworld over and over again and the characters react the way you died in the last run. IMO, that is really clever.

For me, this game lost some points because I've felt it is kinda repetitive. It only has 6 weapons (btw I escaped the underworld with every one of the weapons) and most of the buffs (it is called boons in this game) are generic. Only some hammer buffs really can change the way you play (and after some aspects buffs that are predefined buffs) and you can only get 2 hammer buffs per run. I feel The Binding of Isaac has a much more combination of interesting buffs and skills meanwhile in Hades, the buffs are much more generics, generally speaking, they just buff your numbers not the way you play.

Also, the enemies are way too repetitive, you always fight the same enemies over and over and it is boring especially on the 1st and 2nd floor because they are too easy when you already have escaped at least 1-2 runs. On the other hand, in The Binding of Isaac the game won't get easy because you start your run more powerful, rather you learned how to play and improved yourself (also you need lucky with the buffs, the as same as Hades with the boons).

But still, for a pass time it is a cool game.

I would consider this a masterpiece in the roguelike genre. The story and lore were so well incorporated into the gameplay that the essence of roguelike games, dying over and starting, became a part of the story and felt very natural. You are a godly entity living in the underworld, which rationalizes coming back to life after dying and starting over. Zagreus' speech was very well written. There are many small details that make the game and the story as a whole become more natural and real. By seeing Zagreus guessing which one of the sisters he's going to face next, or trash-talking against his enemies, we feel that he is a real person with emotional capabilities. The existence of an aim to exit the place over and over again gives meaning to the repetitiveness of the game, and the small cutscenes after every escape make each attempt interesting. I wouldn't say that the story was great or special, but it was perfectly good enough for a roguelike game. The presentation of the story was extremely well. The art, voice acting, cutscenes, and small jokes of the narrator; everything were very well-polished.
The gameplay was very smooth and enjoyable. I liked the variety of the upgrades and weapon choices. I love how they are mostly Greek mythology accurate. The variety of enemies and bosses on the runs was also sufficient in my opinion.
The reason I'm breaking off a point (my max is 9, so it makes this an 8) is that after I first beat Hades, the game stopped being challenging. Especially the extra lives made me immortal. After I first beat Hades, I never died again and beat the game with a 10 streak within a few hours. Some fixes for this that I would have liked to see are different boss patterns, new enemies, new dungeon types/traps, and more difficulty. However, the gameplay was so smooth and easy on the eye that I was not bored not even a second.
I also have to appreciate the art department. The music and illustrations were pretty amazing.
Very brilliantly made game. I DO NOT recommend it to people who are expecting a non-repetitive and linear action game. I DEFINITELY recommend it to people who are familiar with roguelike games. You will love it.

Whatever it is, I have to thank it for brining me one of the best roguelike experience in my entire life. I am genuinely, pleasantly surprised by how good this game is. At first, it felt a bit overwhelming, and repetitive, but the more I played it, and the longer I gave it a chance, the more I started to adore and enjoy every single aspect of it. The story is on point. It's not too long, and it doesn't take a long time to beat it once one fully grasps the mechanics of this game. The plot and the characters are amazingly written, and I cannot complain about the number of missions and specific interactions from some characters you may encounter during your playthrough. The game doesn't end as quickly as I thought it would. This game is a true masterpiece in terms of its promising gameplay, as well as a sense of pride once you are "fully" done with it. Expand

Zagreus tries to escape his fathers realm. He is supported by his mother Nyx who even informed the other Greek gods that will help him. However there is far more to the story than it seems at first. You will discover secrets, reveals, twists and know your family, friends, acquaintances and other gods better. I must praise the characters and writing. The Greek legends are full of conflicts between the gods and those are all related to each other. This is transferred well into the game. They are like a family with a lot of problems. The game even won the literary Hugo Award to give you some perspective how good it is. For me this was amazing and I continued even after obtaining the platinum trophy to see the outcomes of some stories. It is well written, enjoyable and gives you always something to kept your interest. The gameplay is like I said a rouge-like RPG. You start each escape run with no abilities and advance through the rooms of the underworld. Each room has rewards like abilities, benefits, items or currencies. Sometimes you can chose between options. This was something I was worried about but it is not the weakness I thought. It is a true strength. In approx 100 runs I never encounter a truly weak set up. I discovered instead some amazing abilities, combinations and different options. Even some abilities I avoided first were good, some even worth reversing my opinion. For example: My least liked weapon became my favorite and the weapon I thought was best became my least used (The game has an interesting system in teasing you to chose different weapons). I admit that I use some abilities or better said set up more often but the different set ups keep it fresh. The next strength are the things you can unlock. There are so many helpful things. Be it new weapons, helpful rooms, appearing treasures, cosmetic set ups, abilities and bonuses. You always have new stuff to do or unlock. Rarely ever have I encounter a game that succeeds in keeping everything this fresh and enjoyable. Then there is the graphic. The art style is excellent and I like the hand draw graphics. For games like this I would always buy an artbook. The music is even better. You will encounter many awesome tracks and there are 2 characters who maybe give you some of the best songs in the game. To round up this experience I did not encounter a single serious bug or glitch. Overall this is my favorite game of the year and deserves my full praise. Never have I encountered a game that keeps being this refreshing from start to finish. Be it the story or gameplay everything is excellent and well thought out. Even the difficulty is correctly balanced as god mode gives you more resistance with each death until you don't die easily. A well thought out system. An easy 10/10 for me Expand

I generally enjoy most of the rogue-like (or, in this case, rogue-lite) games, and Hades happened to be one of the last of the most popular titles I've played. It's not really based on the luck, unlike other countless examples of the genre, yet it's satisfying to play, and hard to master, which makes it, formally, a rogue-like game. But the dialogues and the art style really sold the game to me.

Initially the game is fantastic. Looks great, solid controls and overall a solid button-masher. After the 50th run through of the same dungeons fighting the same enemies, dodging the same cheesy floor traps it just gets tiring. Good for a couple hours of fun but after that the repetition just makes Hades a bit of an obnoxious experience.

Hades is a bonafide masterpiece of a game, with replay value that extends beyond merely beating the game. Every single weapon is fun to use and offers significant difference in the gameplay from each other. And if that weren't enough, each weapon has three variations, all of which feel like they can be used to wreak havoc. The combat itself shines and never feels boring - I only stopped playing on Switch because I felt needed to start playing other games, then I bought it on sale on PC and started it all over. Enemies are fun to repeatedly mow down and are just varied enough to never feel like you're fighting too much of the same thing. If not for the clamp-tight gameplay, you could take your pick from the art style, music score, or characterization of actual figures from ancient Greek mythology as the star of the show. All are amazing to look at and listen to, and contribute heavily to this game's legendary status.

If you enjoy exhilarating fast-paced combat, this is a must-buy. I was not an ancient Greece aficionado before I played this game, but I assume those people would also be pleased since the game covers nearly all of them, and in a manner that would make perfect sense. My feelings for most of these characters is complex, but nearly all of them boast great performances from their voice actors and smashing dialogue. Hades is the one character I mostly don't like, but that's exactly what the game wants. I'll let you pick your own favorites when you play *wink*

I don't know what I could feasibly criticize about this game. There are things I haven't even spoken of that greatly enrich the experience. Your experience will change every run-though, and frequent death is inevitable, but the game grows and evolves as you do. It's brilliant game design, and the only reason why I haven't delved further into rogue-lite games after this is because I'm afraid Hades is just so much better than the rest.

Absolute steal at $25, and even moreso when on sale. Buy it if you haven't yet

Each time you die and return to the underworld you get new dialogue with characters that are beautifully voice acted and complex and my initial wave of frustration I felt when dying quickly turned into excitement as I looked forward to what new things the characters would have to say.

Karakter gelişimi, bölüm tasarımı, bosslar.. her şeyiyle 4/4'lük bir oyun. Türünün en iyilerinden.

    Visuals: 10/10

    - Quality: A pretty fast-paced and cluttered game, yet it is easy to make sense of what is happening. The different abilities and weapons all have nice animations. Each location has a unique look and enemies. (10/10) - Style (-uniqueness): The game has a cartoonish but very stylish look. The menus have this usual Greek feel to them. (10/10) - User Interface: Everything

    - Style (-uniqueness): The game has a cartoonish but very stylish look. The menus have this usual Greek feel to them. (10/10)
    - User Interface: Everything is fairly easy to see and understand by a glance. (10/10)

    Sound: 10/10

    - Voice acting: This is one of the best parts of the game. The voice acting is amazing, and every character has a very suiting voice that conveys their personality. (10/10)
    - Music: There are incredible hits in this game with and without vocals. My favourite little thing is that after you clear the room, all the instruments stop except the bass. (10/10)
    - Sound effects: Every little thing has its own sound effect, my favourite is that every god has their own little effect when you get a boon from them. (10/10)

    Gameplay: 8.8/10

    - Controls (ease of use): The most important part of the game. I tried keyboard and controller as well, I like the controller better. You have to dodge a lot in this game and there’s a lot of button smashing, I feel like just holding down the button should elicit the same result – yes, one of my favourite buff. (9/10)
    - Unique systems: Well, standard rouglite-deckbuilding formula. You get stronger and stronger as you progress. You can also get temporary buffs & debuffs. It is possible to create nice combos, but I wouldn’t say there’s much very surprising. The delightful thing is that there are a lot of weapons that you can also edit. A lot of variety here. (8/10)
    - Difficulty (settings, scaling, etc.): I think there is a steep learning curve here, but after you understand all the enemies and bosses you can feel quite competent. I heard that there is also a “god mode” so if you are only interested in the story, it is possible to just enjoy that. You can also make the game more difficult later on, so fair play to the developers here. (10/10)
    - Grind: There is a lot of content here that you CAN grind for. I think that completing the main story takes a bit too much time, but I never really had to grind for anything. (8/10)

    Story/Lore/World: 9.8/10

    - Characters: All the characters are from Greek mythology and I think they are all fleshed-out pretty well. Their personalities are well reflected in all aspects of the game, e.g., in the case of gods, even their boons reflect their personalities. (10/10)
    - Writing quality: Incredible and smart writing. The mythology really comes alive, the characters and the world feel alive. (10/10)
    - World design: I think it was really clever how the developers could fit a rougelike game in the Underworld, you really feel like you are progressing through it in an attempt to escape. I would have preferred more locations. (9/10)
    - Story/Lore: Greek mythology, what else do you want? Of course, there is a lot of material to work here, and I think the developers have done a fairly good job of showcasing the Underworld. There are a lot of stories and lore here (10/10).

    Technical: 10/10

    - Optimization: Never had any issues. (10/10)
    - Bugs: Never encountered any bugs. (10/10)

The game is a pretty good roguelite. What is good is that the story and characters are just soo interesting that dying is not as bad as it is. The gameplay is very fun although it gets repetitive at times due to the small level diversity. The game has soo much to do in it and can give you 70+ hours of fun.

Do you know what I'm going to do after writing this review? Play Hades again - for fun. It's just so damn good. Maybe I'll be able to escape hell, maybe not, but I'll be happy to try again.

As with previous titles from Supergiant Games, Hades features stellar artwork and music, masterfully creating a world of Greek mythology. The fast-paced action feels great, and the roguelike elements create a synergy with the game’s story, resulting in a truly addictive experience.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
