Awesome gameplay, design and story. It's roguelike so be prepared for repetative gameplay. 8/10 (fight may be more variative).

Hades is a classic roguelike. But the game has a cool twist - "repetitive gameplay".

And if you, like me, aren't a fan of games like , then try playing Hades anyway, because here death is part of the gameplay and narrative, not just an attempt to make the player play the game "until they pass out".

However after 40+ hours and 29 runs into the game but only to beat Hades 5 times, I feel a bit tired after so many runs with the same enemy and environment. Even the dialogue between Zagreus and all the gods seems lost its flavor, just repeating same blablabla again and again. Wish there is a easier mode to push the story goes on without so many failure.

Tried to use different weapons, but so far 4 out of 5 times shields are used to beat Hades. Feels like the weapons are fun to use but can be better balanced.

Overall a very satisfying experience, will get back to it from time to time, although probably won't spend too much time on it from now.

I would consider this a masterpiece in the roguelike genre. The story and lore were so well incorporated into the gameplay that the essence of roguelike games, dying over and starting, became a part of the story and felt very natural. Zagreus' speech was very well written.I would consider this a masterpiece in the roguelike genre. The story and lore were so well incorporated into the gameplay that the essence of roguelike games, dying over and starting, became a part of the story and felt very natural. You are a godly entity living in the underworld, which rationalizes coming back to life after dying and starting over. Zagreus' speech was very well written. There are many small details that make the game and the story as a whole become more natural and real. By seeing Zagreus guessing which one of the sisters he's going to face next, or trash-talking against his enemies, we feel that he is a real person with emotional capabilities. The existence of an aim to exit the place over and over again gives meaning to the repetitiveness of the game, and the small cutscenes after every escape make each attempt interesting. I wouldn't say that the story was great or special, but it was perfectly good enough for a roguelike game. The presentation of the story was extremely well. The art, voice acting, cutscenes, and small jokes of the narrator; everything were very well-polished.
The gameplay was very smooth and enjoyable. I liked the variety of the upgrades and weapon choices. I love how they are mostly Greek mythology accurate. The variety of enemies and bosses on the runs was also sufficient in my opinion.
The reason I'm breaking off a point (my max is 9, so it makes this an 8) is that after I first beat Hades, the game stopped being challenging. Especially the extra lives made me immortal. After I first beat Hades, I never died again and beat the game with a 10 streak within a few hours. Some fixes for this that I would have liked to see are different boss patterns, new enemies, new dungeon types/traps, and more difficulty. However, the gameplay was so smooth and easy on the eye that I was not bored not even a second.
I also have to appreciate the art department. The music and illustrations were pretty amazing.
Very brilliantly made game. I DO NOT recommend it to people who are expecting a non-repetitive and linear action game. I DEFINITELY recommend it to people who are familiar with roguelike games. You will love it.

I generally enjoy most of the rogue-like (or, in this case, rogue-lite) games, and Hades happened to be one of the last of the most popular titles I've played. It's not really based on the luck, unlike other countless examples of the genre, yet it's satisfying to play, and hard to master, which makes it, formally, a rogue-like game. But the dialogues and the art style really sold the game to me.

The only disadvantage of the game for me is the long main game. Hades Review: Positive and Negative Aspects

Hades stands out as a prominent example within the roguelike genre. By examining both its positive and negative aspects, we can understand why the game has gained such popularity.

    Positive Aspects:

    Engaging Gameplay:
Hades delivers fluid and dynamic gameplay. Fast-paced combat requiring quick reactions, a variety of abilities, and weapon choices keep the game consistently exciting and enjoyable. Each attempt necessitates developing a new strategy.

    Storytelling and Character Development:
The game boasts a deep storyline and character development. With each death, you discover new pieces of the story, unraveling the universe and characters further. The relationships between Hades and other characters add an emotional dimension to the game.

    Visual Aesthetics and Atmosphere:
The game offers a visually captivating experience through its elegant art style and atmospheric world design. Each environment and character make you feel like a part of the game world. The atmosphere draws players into the story.

    Negative Aspects:

    Repetitive Content:
Due to the nature of the roguelike genre, the game's content can become repetitive. Iterations might lead to monotony for some players. Even with different gameplay styles, sometimes traversing the same areas can feel repetitive.

    Difficulty Level:
Hades presents a challenging difficulty level. Some players might find this difficulty occasionally frustrating. Enemy combinations and the intensity of certain levels can be demanding.

    Conclusion:

Hades, as a notable representative of the roguelike genre, captivates players with its dynamic gameplay, intricate storyline, and aesthetic atmosphere. Repetitive content and the difficulty level might pose challenges for some players. However, the game's overall quality and entertainment value provide an experience that many players believe is well worth overcoming these challenges for.

Supergiant's best game yet. It's a good Diablo clone, and it's a good roguelite. Still very repetitive, but does numerous things to mitigate the repetition, so the fun lasts longer. Unlike some roguelites which feel limited in what you can do on a single run, Hades wants the player to go nuts and try different things. The weapon variations provide a great variety of play-styles. Unlike some roguelites which feel limited in what you can do on a single run, Hades wants the player to go nuts and try different things. The weapon variations provide a great variety of play-styles. The environments are highly detailed with nice colours, and visually diverse.

The quality of the art/visuals and sound is high enough that it's basically a playable cartoon. However, although there's tons of dialogue that reacts to a surprising number of specific situations, the narrative as a whole is puddle deep. It's aimed squarely at pre-teens, and while its borrowing of Greek myth is thorough, it's content with merely referencing things to make its audience feel smart. Anything it has to say about the mythology is expressed more so in their artistic vision of the characters, rather than the character/story arcs - with a couple exceptions.

Very minor insignificant spoilers in this paragraph:
For example the story of Achilles and Patroclus is given a lot of attention (Achilles is an NPC and friend of the player-character), and it amounts to Patroclus moping around all day in Elysium because he misses Achilles, his lover. Now I hate to say this, but it has to be said because of how the devs have chosen to interpret this through the lens of their own politics: Achilles and Patroclus, characters from the Iliad of Homer, are not portrayed as homosexuals in the Iliad.
They are buddies. It's only in the 20th century that college profs practicing revisionist history have strongly pushed for the idea that there is a hidden homosexual relationship between those characters. There's no evidence for it, you'd have to project that onto it yourself, which is what happened with the academics and is what happened here.
So at the end of the day you have a storyline that the devs give a lot of attention to, yet it's so shallow and goes nowhere that in practical terms it's kind of just there to be there, and it's factually questionable. To me that leaves the only purpose for its existence is to send a message. And this is just one major example.

So without going into endless detail about all of that, in which case I should rather just make a youtube analysis or something, I just wanted to give that short explanation of why the game is subversive - because it is. And it's so subversive that there's more to say about what Supergiant has accomplished, in terms of subversion, than what they've achieved in the game design itself. The quality of the game only makes it more insidious.

The last thing I have to mention on that topic: The women. There are no young women in this game. There are no busty women in this game. We're talking about goddesses with idealized forms, and literally every single one ticks multiple of these boxes: a) 40+ age, b) face immediately recognizable as masculine, c) small bust that slopes and sags.
This would be easier to accept if they had thrown boys a bone and at least made Aphrodite a babe, but no, it's as if it were stipulated in a contract that they must portray women a certain way. It's honestly frightening. This is coming from people who want you to think that Achilles and Patroclus were homosexuals and make it a central plot of their game, yet they're avoiding any depiction of a human breast drawn with a round line (and that's not an exaggeration).

And for those who will say it's not important and the game should only be judged for its gameplay, I disagree because it's clearly important to Supergiant games. They have gone out of their way to offer such a treatment of Greek myth, so much that it must be as important to them as it is to make the game good. Just something to think about.

1- Each time you fail or escape you can collect some items that will make your character stronger in the next runs (darkness, jewelry, titan blood, diamonds, keys). So every new run you will be stronger and stronger. So, in the first runs, it is quite impossible to even defeat the 2nd boss but once you arrive at 35th-40th run you can pretty much always win because you will be super strong if you use everything the game gives you.

2- The story is the great differential, although it isn't an awesome story it has some charismatic characters, and the most important thing, the story makes sense, it justifies why you return to the beggining after you die and why you have to escape the underworld over and over again and the characters react the way you died in the last run. IMO, that is really clever.

For me, this game lost some points because I've felt it is kinda repetitive. It only has 6 weapons (btw I escaped the underworld with every one of the weapons) and most of the buffs (it is called boons in this game) are generic. Only some hammer buffs really can change the way you play (and after some aspects buffs that are predefined buffs) and you can only get 2 hammer buffs per run. I feel The Binding of Isaac has a much more combination of interesting buffs and skills meanwhile in Hades, the buffs are much more generics, generally speaking, they just buff your numbers not the way you play.

Also, the enemies are way too repetitive, you always fight the same enemies over and over and it is boring especially on the 1st and 2nd floor because they are too easy when you already have escaped at least 1-2 runs. On the other hand, in The Binding of Isaac the game won't get easy because you start your run more powerful, rather you learned how to play and improved yourself (also you need lucky with the buffs, the as same as Hades with the boons).

But still, for a pass time it is a cool game.

Not sure what to think of this. The game has a lot of depht regarding dialogues and such. But the core gameplay is to redo the same thing over and over again, while upgrading slowly your character (very slowly). Yes, the level are randomly generated but after the 125 times you went into the same designs, it doesn't really matter. The fighting is perfect, the music, the voices are superb. This also helps you get invested in it's main narrative as well as any side story you choose to get into.

The core gameplay is completely fine in the first half. Where the experience really begins to suffer however, is in the latter half of the game. I don't think the game is to difficult, it's probably one of the easiest roguelite/like ever made. But you will be required to do the same thing over and over again, and there is a serious lack of enemy variety. The boss of the second and third chamber are so excruciatingly dull and boring that after a while I just turned on easy mode to go to the ending, but at that moment the game already jumped the shark for me.

A lot of people say that the variety in this game stems from the runs being really different from another, which I really don't agree with. After a couple of successful runs you can make a pretty good formula in your head you can follow of what items you should pick up and you will basically always win. The combat feels a bit floaty so after you figured out how to make a successful run it just gets stale.

What really helps is the very beautifully written dialogue and voice acting combined with the music at each successful run. However, the kind of true ending was a bit anticlimactic for me, especially since I didn't expect the game to be over since there wasn't really any build up towards it.

Still I think Hades is really worth your time, especially for the price tag. If they had done a better job at making more enemies and bosses, and paced everything better the game would probably have stayed fresh for me at the end.

    7/10 for me.

Every run felt more or less the same and the "boons" and trinkets don't really mix up gameplay. So it felt like a gigantic repetitive grind to do the same thing over and over again in the same floors vs the same enemies and the same bosses and that for a few more scraps or a tiny bit of story progression and if you grind the same repetetive thing (that you already beaten 40 times) just a few more dozen times you might be able to one day afford that upgrade that boosts something by 10% *YAWN*. also the weapons felt too samey, overall I have played roguelikes/roguelites that had WAY better variety where some runs you would have a completely different upgradeprogression than others and the gameplay was entirely different based on that and sometimes you hit a jackpot with some ridiculous combos, or something that tremendously mixed up the repetitiveness. Not here - repetitiveness is the name of the game, and not in a good (addicting) way, but the tedious, "why am I wasting my time" type of repetitiveness.

overall: 6/10, Fine. Everything is a solid 9/10 but gameplay drags it down to mediocrity.

Even playing 3 hours more I didn't make progress with any characters, you don't even know if you'll find that item out there, or if the character you want to talk to will even be around!

The combat is that serviceable and then bland feeling Supergiant combat with that same Deviantart.com art style. The music is the same bland music they always have.

You feel addicted to wanting to upgrade your relationships, home, and character, and the combat to do it feels like a bland and stressful slog, as it is often a gangbang-bullethell game.

Then you find out that the developer decided to make almost every character in the game gay and trans and the only story you're getting is how much they miss their lover and now it's your job to fix them back up.

Honestly, it felt like the developers really wanted to push their fetish onto unaware gamers. No one ever mentions these things. You'll most likely know the name Aphrodite? Well she's the Greek goddess of beauty, sex, reproduction, etc. When you meet her, her drawing is a nude woman that looks great, until you look up at her face, which is a mans face wearing a wig. Very jarring. They obviously changed that at some point I believe she had a womans face. Because there's a poster you can buy to put on your wall and it has a womans face on it.

After you beat the game a few times, you start to realize how boring it is beating it over and over to get a new paragraph of story each time. Also, Achilles (Brad Pitt's character in Troy) is gay in the game...

I have little experience with rogue-like games. My last foray into the genre was Diablo III. I gave Hades 10 hours of play prior to quitting without finishing a runthrough. Why did I quit?

In fairness, Hades' game loop is refreshingly tight: resurrect after death, banter a few dialogue lines with various mythological characters at home, buy small character upgrades, venture out on a dungeon crawl through the same levels, collect single-run powerups to aid your attempt, die, and...do it all again. The combat feels punchy, and the multifarious mixture of weapons and single-run powers (boons) makes for a few hours of interesting combat. After that, it begins to feel like a smear of generic, furious button-mashing.

For me, the game loop was a double-edged sword. While tight, it became boring after a dozen escape attempts. The dialogue interludes are overwhelmingly facile permutations of "You shouldn't try to leave the Underworld, Zagreus!", or "You'll make it out eventually, boyo!" That, along with the glacially slowly unfolding story, and the mostly minor per-run character upgrades, just wasn't enough to motivate me to keep playing. I narrowly died to the final boss in run 16 and could only stomach a few more attempts before the allure of other games overwhelmed my motivation to slog through another Greek Groundhog Day escape attempt.

There were likely interesting story beats, upgrades, or new mechanics that I missed by quitting. But 10 hours was enough for me to cut losses and move on. ("I could be playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Fallout 4 again!") Overall my Hades experience was a mostly middling one. I can't recommend this game to others. Its charm turns to tedium too quickly.

But the combat can be a visual mess, the story and characters lack any emotional depth, and you need to be prepared to play the game through 20+ times to reach the ending. And the ending itself is a big ol' slap in the face anticlimax.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
