The beginning of the story with finding out about your mother is cool, but this is one of the only cutscenes in the game. They put a lot of expectations in the story and I was really disappointed, you have to go to play for the gameplay. But what surprised me was the amount of dialogue with the characters and how everyone has VA even though it is an indie game. I got True Ending, I don’t know if it’s worth it but it’s pretty good. I had the relationship with Meg and it was very meh, but the system of giving the offerings and finding out more about the characters is something very cool.

When I dropped the game in the first 2 hours, I thought that the eternal upgrades are kind of bad and took too long to upgrade. Then I decided to **** and just get well and started to like the game more and then I started to unlock good eternal upgrades quickly.

Currently several games have some luck system (RNG) within their gameplay, either in the criticism of their attacks or in the game loot. But Hades builds his gameplay totally surrounded by "luck", with each 'run' you get totally different skills, the only possible side that I see in this is variety of gameplay but it is possible to create this variety in several other ways. I didn't really like the 'structure' of the gameplay, but the combat itself when you have at least a decent build is very good.
And after the 3 boss, in the Nyx temple, the gameplay was much more boring than the previous 3 dungeons, the idea of the dungeon to go after Cerberus' food and choose the rewards is interesting. But the claustrophobic level design, enemies with HP as hell spamming those pools of poison everywhere, low variety of enemies and it's not just one or two of these levels, it's one after the other. At first it is highly irritating and after you learn to cope it just gets a little boring.

The Heat system is very interesting and adds a lot of replay value.

The variations of bosses is something very interesting, with each run the first 2 bosses change slightly.

The soundtrack is good but little varied and only plays in a few 'rare' moments. The sung songs that play in some moementos are good, there are 4 of them if I'm not mistaken.

    What is Hades?

Hades is the story of Zagreus, a Teenager who “can’t even” with his dad and decides to run away and smash as much stuff as he can on his way out, a plan that is complicated a bit by him being the son of Hades and the house he tries to leave is the Underworld.

Hades is a roguelike whose isometric look look and combat mechanics owe a debt to Diablo, but instead of an endless climb up the equipment ladder, it feeds you precious story morsels to keep you motivated.

Hades is a Supergiant Games title, a pedigree that signifies incredible art direction, excellent writing and experimental storytelling.

Hades is the roguelike I’ve played for 150 hours straight during the last month.

Why, you ask? Let me count the reasons:

The combat is excellent: Zagreus, the protagonist, has two attack types, a dash, a spell and one to two ults, all of them easy to pull off, but only studious application of each will see you succeed. He starts each run with one of six very different weapons, and picks up powerups along the way that can alter the gameplay significantly. The system is easy to pick up but has a lot of hidden depth, the action is spectacular at times but almost always legible, each of the four biomes Zagreus can cross have their own, completely unique collection of foes and It. Just. Never. Gets. Old. I grew weary of Diablo combat, and Dead Cells combat. I never grew tired of Hades combat.

The plot and the writing are top notch, the best Supergiant Games has produced yet, and that’s saying something. The characters in here are now the definite interpretation of the Greek Pantheon for me (did I mention the setting of Hades is the Greek Pantheon?). All the characters consist only of a few still images and a ginormous amount of recorded lines, but they all come across as so human and deep and charming and likable… Ok, Ares comes across as the well-meaning but weird uncle who doesn’t get left alone with the kids much, and Zeus is a bit of a buffoon, but still, you just have to be charmed by even them. They are family. A very dysfunctional family, sure, and the stuff they all go through goes to some pretty dark places at times, but it all finds a heartwarming, hopeful finale.

Well, ok, Theseus is a dick.

But what’s really surprising, and what really feels like squaring the circle, is how tightly interwoven combat and story are. Little pieces of plot are dispensed throughout every run, and every death nets you a double dose, when Zagreus returns to the house of Dad and gets to talk to all his friends (and Hades). The action delightfully informs the plot, and the plot provides delicious context for the action. The pacing is excellent: Talky time provides the occasional breather during the high octane action, but it never overstays its welcome. It sounds like a contradiction, but they did pull it off: Hades really is a great roguelike with an excellent story.

The production values are through the roof: The art is creative, highly detailed, vibrant, wonderful. The soundtrack grabs you and never lets go. Logan Cunningham is the god of sexy voices, but all the other voice actors bring their A game, too.

Are there quibbles? Well, the poisonous enemies in the final realm can go die in a fire. And I’m a bit resentful that I had to activate Easy Mode to push through a certain difficulty spike. But that’s my personal failing.

TLDR: Supergiant Games did it again. Buy this game, play this game. And say Hi to my gal Artemis for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

I seriously cannot understand why this game is being heralded as the Second Coming of Christ - it's BORING as hell. The cartoonish graphics are another major kiss of death, that's also the reason why I hated the TORCHLIGHT series. Bring back the dark Gothic style of DIABLO 1 (the only DIABLO game worth playing!).

However after 40+ hours and 29 runs into the game but only to beat Hades 5 times, I feel a bit tired after so many runs with the same enemy and environment. Even the dialogue between Zagreus and all the gods seems lost its flavor, just repeating same blablabla again and again. Wish there is a easier mode to push the story goes on without so many failure.

Because there's a little too much RNG involved. When you clear a stage you will have several paths to choose (usually no more than 2, sometimes just one). Above every door you'll see what rewards await you in the next room, but you have no real impact on what kind of boons you will get throughout the whole run. This means you can get very lucky and receive all the best boons in one playthrough and considerably weaker boons in the next, which makes for a slightly frustrating gameplay sometimes. Expand

Hades is a roguelike action roleplaying game where you play as Prince Zagreus, son of Hades, and you are tired of life in the Underworld and want to defy your father by escaping. You take runs through the layers of the Underworld fighting all types of monsters clawing your way to the surface.
Along the way the other Olympians will be trying to aid you by bestowing upon you powers to strengthen your weapons and skills. All in attempts to help Zagreus join them on Mt. Olympus. The boons they bestow upon you are perfectly inline with their characters. Examples being; Zeus granting lightning, Aphrodite allowing chances to charm and weaken monsters, Dionysus can afflict hangover (my personal favorite perks).
There is an interwoven story in the game you discover while playing through escape attempts and increasing your bonds with the cast of characters including Gods, servants of Hades, and Greek heroes.
This game is a beautiful masterpiece that has been given numerous awards, not including game of the year by most publications.
I started playing in early release 2019 and played through most development of the game and extra features they added. Eventually leading to the full release in 2020 where the true ending was added.
It took me 72 successful escape attempts to finish the story and reach the true ending. There are still cosmetic upgrades I could chase, character relationships to increase and push for higher difficulty runs.

The Roguelike/Roguelite genre, being one in which a lot of this experimenting usually happens, has become somewhat of a canvas for daring developers to express new concepts and ideas for the gaming landscape. And from these kinds of endeavors, gems like Hades come to be.
Supergiant Games managed to create a perfect mix between the Roguelike tropes we're familiar with, and deep storytelling entirely new to the genre. Here, we play as Zagreus, son of the titular Hades, God of the dead and the Underworld of Greek myth. Your objective is to escape your father's realm and reach the world of the living - a task he will not let you achieve so easily. And it is from this simple premise that the whole story unfolds, with masterful execution.
Right from the start, you're greeted with a colorful cast of characters originated from different Greek legends and the unique relationships of each one with our protagonist. Then, when you actually attempt an escape and fail on your first couple of tries (as is common practice in Roguelike games), you'll learn that these same characters not only acknowledge your efforts but also have their own thoughts about it if you're willing to listen. As Zagreus advances further in his attempts, your relationship with them will also advance each time you meet. With enough development, you may even become intimate with your favorite characters, and maybe new kinds of relationships will surface... But that is up to the player to discover.
But Hades' success wouldn't be complete if the game didn't get the basics right. The actual escapades are filled with action-packed gameplay, where you fight your way through enemies and bosses alike, making your way up the Underworld. To help with that, you're presented with six different weapons to choose from, each one vastly different from the others, and Zagreus' divine family from Mount Olympus will also show up frequently to aid in his task with a plethora of boons to upgrade his skills in unique ways. With such levels of customization and an already enormous enemy variety, you'll hardly ever come to close to having two similar runs.
Lastly, the technical standpoint leaves nothing to be desired. The game is gorgeous to look at, each character perfectly expresses their personalities and divinity in their design, the level design and enemies consistently communicate the feeling of each biome of the Underworld, and the soundtrack boosts to whole experience through the roof with pieces that convey emotions from ease to tension to outright bloodlust. Besides that, the game runs smoothly on even an average PC, and the controls feel tightly responsive - can't blame that death on missing inputs now.
At the time of writing, Hades has already left Early Access looking like a masterpiece, but Supergiant Games doesn't seem to call it done. The game already packs hundreds of hours' worth of content and a seemingly infinite amount of recorded voice lines, but the team of developers promises to keep support alive and running for a long while before moving on to the next big hit. Given this level of dedication, what the future has in store for Hades sure is nothing short of god-like.

First of all, greek mythology is widely known and loved, and we can tell that the developers love it as well, because they put a huge amount of love in the story and in the game in general. The story is brilliant and it makes you want to start a new run as soon as you finished the last. The voice actors are simply brilliant. This might be the first rogue-like game where i love the level design from start to finish. The environment can be challenging, but only to the point where it doesn't become frustrating, they balanced it really well.

The variety of how you can play the game is huge. We start with one weapon, and then we can unlock 5 more, and unlock overall 4 aspects for each weapon, which change how they function. There are melee weapons, ranged weapons, slow weapons, fast weapons, there is one for everyone. Then on top of that we get the buffs (boons) from the gods on Olympus, which also allow us to create multiple builds for every weapon and every aspect of them.

Now someone might think, "oh well, i'm interested in this game but it looks to easy or too hard for me". They made sure that it's not an issue. There are multiple "difficulties" for this game. You can either play on normal or you can either active god mode or hell mode. God mode lowers the amount of damage you take as soon as you activate it, and then it increases everytime you die, up to 80%. Hell mode activates the pact of punishment (on normal and god mode it only activates once you do a full clear once) as soon as the game starts. These are there to give everyone further challenges and rewards from boss fights. And doesn't matter which difficulty you play on, our character will get permament upgrades from the mirror of night. These upgrades contain damage upgrade, cheat death mechanic, gives you more chance to recieve better buffs from the gods, you can reroll room rewards or even god buffs, gives you more mobility, etc.

I would recommend this game for everyone, even if you never played a rogulike before.

This is easily one of the best games of the year.

With this in mind, I feel confident recommending this game to those who have not traditionally enjoyed roguelikes, as this is probably the only one I have myself. The game so far consists of an assortment of six unlockable weapons, a sword, pike, shield, bow, fists (for quick attacks), and a gun of sorts, and all of these are enjoyable to play with, each requiring a unique play style and bringing their own strengths and weaknesses to the table.

The visual style of Hades is amazingly colourful and animated, a signature of Supergiant which continually pretty on the eye. Some members of the cast appear as you would expect them to be, whilst others have incorporated unique visuals and characterisations, such as the suddenly wholesome Dusa, a cocky fury, and the racial diversity of some of the Olympians and Achaian heroes, all of which are a welcome addition and bring vibrancy back to old mates.

Hades is a masterclass on video game storytelling, and the best of its kind since Undertale reminded people that a video game can be funny, touching, endearing, and deep at the same time in 2015. What Hades does with beautiful art, a simple (but solid) core gameplay loop, and engaging characters in a great story is infinitely more than what most AAA games do with hundreds of developers, massive budgets, celebrity voice actors, and all of the top end graphics in the world.

Supergiant takes a genre of games that has been overdone to death, and with a clever story, makes the perfect blend of storytelling and gameplay. Where something like The Last of Us Part II completely segregates their story and gameplay at the end of their game, Hades embraces the nature of its story and embraces the resetting nature of the roguelite genre. The story cannot work without the gameplay, and the gameplay is nothing special without the story to drive it. It legitimately comes together in a way that pushes the entire medium forward and raises the bar for everyone else.

The gameplay is fast, fluid, and everything has the right amount of punch to be satisfying. I would give this game a 9.5 if I could, but since I'm unable to, I rounded up to the perfect score I don't think any game should get. The gameplay is where the only issue comes in. Enemies toward the end of the game become too spongy and the action can be hard to follow with all the particle effects. That can create some frustration, especially with some Pacts of Punishment later in the game. Those add to the particle effect mess, and while it really is beautiful to look at, it just becomes a tad too much to follow.

But each run is different and you can select items that can help shape your experience. You can favor Zeus for some area of effect damage, you can favor Athena to give yourself more survivability, or maybe you want to get some Poseidon effects in to shove enemies around. If you don't want any of those, you can use items that increase your health or starting currency for upgrades later in the run. With six different weapons, each with four different styles of play, there's a lot of fun to be had with the experimentation in each go.

There really doesn't feel like there's anything like it out right now. It's a $25 game that you can easily get fifty hours out of if you want to reach the epilogue. If you beat the game, you'll probably want to go that far to see the full completion of the awesome story. It's so much more engaging and the development behind it was way more ethical than any AAA title. It's more complete than a AAA title, too. I haven't encountered any noticeable bugs, which is a fantastic change of pace given the state of other games like Cyberpunk 2077 or just about any Ubisoft title.

Hades absolutely hits the nail on the head with every development philosophy Supergiant had in mind when creating it. It's without a doubt the best game of 2020, and that's admittedly a low bar, but it's such a bright spot to start the next decade of gaming with. There is really nothing else like it and it's another piece of quality work from a quality developer.

I wanted to like this but there's simply not enough content to justify the high scores, I'd give it a 6 or 7 but 2 to balance out all the gushers.
Maybe it's not my cup of tea, but fighting the same enemies and the button mashing gets really old, when one is accustomed to more advanced and complex games, this games seems to cater towards casual players. You will inevitably get stronger

You will inevitably get stronger and encounters will get easier, so at some point it feels more like a progressive grind where skill doesn't matter and there's no real learning curve. Just play and play until eventually, you finish it.
Art style and voices are top-notch, its a pretty good game but the scores its getting are way too high for what it is.

Smooth, action packed fun and addictive gameplay with a good story with full of surprises. Amazing art design and voice acting. Despite the nature of the game, it does not feel repetitive even if you play over and over. This game is a 10/10

The saddest thing about Supergiant's boringest game yet is that it's enjoying such success that they might do another like it. The voice acting is great, but the gameplay is the grindiest, dullest, most visual-cluttery waste of time I've tried in recent memory.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has a pretty good story but absolutely garbage controls. It's pretty sad when Pong handles 1000 times better than this game. Also there's only 2 weapons even worth using and that's the spear and shield. The rest are complete trash. I made this account just so I could review this **** game. Expand

TBH I didnt like this game at first. I dont like Isaac-type games - usually because the progression is very slow and you always have to start from the beginning, though, I liked Isaac itself and spend about 100h there. Then I read reviews majority of which was very good, decided to give it a try once more and ... and couldnt stop playing Hades until late night :D

Seriously, I tried quite a few Isaac-type games and usually after 1-2h deinstalled it, but this - this is probably one of the best, if not the best game of this genre. The game might seem difficult at first, but rather quickly become easier with upgrades you get, and this is very good! Make no mistake though, this game is still challenging even with all upgrades, but not that crazy challenging like Isaac or SMB. Usually in such games you get no aid in your later playthroughts but your experience. Thus leads to 100+ beginnings of the same 1st level which is doesnt feel great when you have job and family. Hades is not very long if you want just to finish this game - I made it from 18th try. But this is not an end - if you want to reveal whole story, try all weapon upgrades there are even more challenges to overcome.
Very good music, nice graphics, awesome combat system and abilities, challenging bosses. Maybe not a masterpiece, but still very very good game! 10 of 10.

The best roguelike of all time. There are no real flaws. The only "flaws" are that there isn't even more to do.

    Just wow!
At first I didn't want to buy this game as it seemed very cartoonish, but I was very wrong.
After I actually saw this game on my screen instead of twitch I was amazed how great and smooth everything looks.

And the gameplay is fantastic. I really like the roguelite instead of roguelike. Keeping a bit of progress is great!

Most addicting (single player) game I have ever played, you getting the history of the game little by little was a master move (really wanted to accomplish that final mission with almost 100 hours of playing)

Would have been a 10/10 if there were more Ashley Barrett songs (come on, only one singed, you guys made really amazing songs on Transistor, Bastion and Pyre... And this game took years to be developed). When I was playing Transistor, all could listen was their 5 singed songs over and over again.

Can't wait to see their future games (always masterpieces)

One of the best games I've played in the last few years, and I don't even like roguelites much
This is the first game I've reviewed, or played, that I'd give a 10/10.
+ Amazing art style and graphics + Satisfying gameplay and combat + Great soundtrack and sound effects + Good variety in each run + Great story and dialogue + Voice lines barely, if ever, repeat + Always new

+ Lots of replayability, can take over 50 hours to complete

I can't really think of any full on negatives for this game so here are some nitpicks:

/ Not many settings, although they aren't really needed
/ Voices and lines on Zagreus sometimes don't fit imo
/ Not sure on the bounty system
/ Some enemies are a bit too spongy
/ Technical difficulties: sometimes the game launches to a black screen, I get constant "Game unable to save" messages

Game was fun until it suddenly ran out of content. I did not expect Elysium to be the last "real" area, with the Temple of Styx feeling like a tacked-on afterthought, and the final boss to be vastly easier than in Elysium. They apparently expect me to keep fighting through the whole game over and over again just for story options and those weapon unlocks. Sorry, that's not what a "masterpiece" game does. That's what a hack indie game trying to pad its content does. Game feels a LOT like they got tired of making it just released "what they had". Expand

Beat Hades on my 10th run, surprisingly, though I did watch a lot of Haelian and Jawless Paul's guides to get a better idea of how to play the game. Try this game out when it's on sale! As with previous titles from Supergiant Games, Hades features stellar artwork and music, masterfully creating a world of Greek mythology. The fast-paced action feels great, and the roguelike elements create a synergy with the game’s story, resulting in a truly addictive experience.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
