Fun and engaging. The perfect roguelike/action/story/musical mix. A really good game which could have been GOTY 2020 without any trouble.

Hades feels like it has its own soul.
The world feels alive and constantly moving despite infinite attempts to get out of Tartarus which is filled with genuinely challenging enemies and events. Exactly the direction I was hoping a rogue like would go.

Hades is simply wonderful. A rare example of a game where every little detail works perfectly in tune with everything else. No mechanic is there for the sake of being there. Narrative is masterfully woven into the core gameplay. Artwork is gorgeous. A jewel in Supergiant's crown. Or should I say gemstone :)

Ca y est, la version 1.0 est enfin sortie ! Et je peux vous dire qu'Hadès enterre d'ores et déjà presque tous les rogue-like auquel j'ai pu jouer.

Hades is a goddamn masterpiece of a game. I HATE roguelikes, yet I love this game with all my heart. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at these kinds of games, but I found Hades very approachable and enjoyable. I HATE roguelikes, yet I love this game with all my heart. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at these kinds of games, but I found Hades very approachable and enjoyable. I did eventually take advantage of the game's god mode to make thing's a little more manageable (all god mode does is reduce the damage you take) since I kept dying somewhat quickly. I had fun before I turned god mode on, but the game actually felt beatable when I turned it on. It still took me a total of 18 tries and 11 hours to beat the final boss for the first time even with this god mode on.
One of the things I love about this game is that while you start over when you die, progression items carry over, which gives a sense of progression that no other roguelike I've played gives. In a way, dying in Hades can sometimes feel useful and rewarding, since you can now spend or save all the items you've collected while playing.
The combat in this game is god damn amazing. The many different weapons all feel different and have their own play style. You'll very quickly get used to one of these weapons and will want to try and beat the game with it. For me though, I actually beat the game for the first time with a weapon I didn't like too much. That just goes to show though how good the game's combat is. Even with weapon's you aren't used tom, as long as you're good with them, you can succeed.
Since this is a rougelike, there are a lot of random aspects to the game. My favorite of these random elements are the "boons" (powerups) that you can get on different floors. These are gifted by multiple gods that help you along your journey. There are SOOO many different abilities and ability combinations that It would probably take over hundreds of plays to see them all. Like the weapons, you'll find specific powerups that you like more than others and you hope they'll be there every run. But, like with the weapon, I actually won against the final boss for the first time with a super weird set of powerups. Again, it goes to show how well this games combat is set up. These random abilities can all work together so well.
The story of the game is also a highlight. Without spoiling much, the playable character (I'll call him his nickname, Zag) is trying to escape the underworld to see the surface. It's a simple enough story at first, but every time you die, some of the story might unlock. You also get to talk to multiple gods in the house of hades, which is also where you can upgrade yourself and your weapons. These NPC's always have something interesting to say, and most of the time it's something related to your last run. Considering every line is voice acted, this is super impressive! There are so many different lines to hear, and the voice acting is just perfect.
I really like the music in this game. It's nothing I'd listen to outside of the game, but it gets your heart pounding in those intense moments.
The upgrades that you can unlock after dying feel worthwhile and useful. They all have different purposes, and depending on your play style, you'll end up focusing on certain upgrades more than others. The weapon upgrades also feel nice and upgrade the look of your weapon.
The artstyle. THE ARTSTYLE!!! THIS GAME IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

My score for this game is a 10/10. This doesn't mean it's perfect, just that its a masterpiece. I barley have any problems with this game, and the ones I do have can boil down to me just being bad at the game. BUY THIS GAME!!!! I will continue to play this game until I get burnt out of it.

The beginning of the story with finding out about your mother is cool, but this is one of the only cutscenes in the game. They put a lot of expectations in the story and I was really disappointed, you have to go to play for the gameplay. But what surprised me was the amount of dialogue with the characters and how everyone has VA even though it is an indie game. I got True Ending, I don’t know if it’s worth it but it’s pretty good. I had the relationship with Meg and it was very meh, but the system of giving the offerings and finding out more about the characters is something very cool.

When I dropped the game in the first 2 hours, I thought that the eternal upgrades are kind of bad and took too long to upgrade. Then I decided to **** and just get well and started to like the game more and then I started to unlock good eternal upgrades quickly.

Currently several games have some luck system (RNG) within their gameplay, either in the criticism of their attacks or in the game loot. But Hades builds his gameplay totally surrounded by "luck", with each 'run' you get totally different skills, the only possible side that I see in this is variety of gameplay but it is possible to create this variety in several other ways. I didn't really like the 'structure' of the gameplay, but the combat itself when you have at least a decent build is very good.
And after the 3 boss, in the Nyx temple, the gameplay was much more boring than the previous 3 dungeons, the idea of the dungeon to go after Cerberus' food and choose the rewards is interesting. But the claustrophobic level design, enemies with HP as hell spamming those pools of poison everywhere, low variety of enemies and it's not just one or two of these levels, it's one after the other. At first it is highly irritating and after you learn to cope it just gets a little boring.

The Heat system is very interesting and adds a lot of replay value.

The variations of bosses is something very interesting, with each run the first 2 bosses change slightly.

The soundtrack is good but little varied and only plays in a few 'rare' moments. The sung songs that play in some moementos are good, there are 4 of them if I'm not mistaken.

Expand

Hades is my first action roguelike game, and based on how much I've played, I can say it is an amazing introduction for me to the genre.

Gameplay is fast and full of never ending action. The boons that you earn in each dungeon significantly alter your abilities in interesting ways. What I personally prefer is lightning striking when I dash, water spreading to other enemies when I use my Cast, and when I am hit, Weak inflicts upon my attackers. I love the fact that you can also sacrifice boons in later areas and give yourself room to try others without needing to die and restart. That is another thing, dying never frustrates me, as when I return back to the main hub area, there is always something new, be it someone speaking to another or just offering new dialogue to me. I love that you can choose from different weapons and also get upgrades such as a second chance after dying, which I have 2 of those, as well as gaining money every time you enter a dungeon room. There is SO SO much more to talk about but I don't want this review to go on longer.

The presentation of Hades is so mysterious, electric and yet calm at times. The story hasn't fleshed out too hard at the point where I'm at, but slowly I am figuring out information about the lore in this game and I'm always more and more interested to know more. Not much else to say about it.

Character design is impressive to say the least. Most of the time when I play mythological games, characters seem generic in design to me, but I am in love with EVERYONE in design here. Most of all Zag and Aphrodite. These designs are actually perfect. It's incredible. Props to the Jen Zee for the astounding work here.

OST is super immersive. Every piece of music helps me really sink into the fact that I'm always in unknown ever-changing territories and that I need to be on my toes. I plan to purchase this soundtrack very soon, because despite the intensity of it, there is also a relaxing charm to a lot of these tracks. It's hard for me to describe how stellar the OST is apart from that. I had never heard Darren Korb's work before now, but hearing that he has made music for past Supergiant games is instantly selling me on playing them.

Overall, I want to say that despite not having beat the game nor getting past Elysium, Hades is an actual masterpiece. I have not been so addicted consistently to a game like this for over a year now, and I am more than satisfied with the $19.99 I spent on this game at launch week. I can't believe how much love and passion has poured into a game this cheap, and I honestly wish I spent something more like $39.99 on it. I'm going to double dip on this game and get the Switch port, and I will also be purchasing the OST. I want more games like this, which I'm sure I can definitely find if I go take a peek in not only Supergiant's past games, but the genre as a whole.

    This is my GOTY.

With this in mind, I feel confident recommending this game to those who have not traditionally enjoyed roguelikes, as this is probably the only one I have myself. The game so far consists of an assortment of six unlockable weapons, a sword, pike, shield, bow, fists (for quick attacks), and a gun of sorts, and all of these are enjoyable to play with, each requiring a unique play style and bringing their own strengths and weaknesses to the table.

The visual style of Hades is amazingly colourful and animated, a signature of Supergiant which continually pretty on the eye. Some members of the cast appear as you would expect them to be, whilst others have incorporated unique visuals and characterisations, such as the suddenly wholesome Dusa, a cocky fury, and the racial diversity of some of the Olympians and Achaian heroes, all of which are a welcome addition and bring vibrancy back to old mates.

It's always interesting to see when a game takes an already established formula and twists it in a way people haven't really seen before. The Roguelike/Roguelite genre, being one in which a lot of this experimenting usually happens, has become somewhat of a canvas for daring developers to express new concepts and ideas for the gaming landscape. And from these kinds of endeavors, gems like Hades come to be.
Supergiant Games managed to create a perfect mix between the Roguelike tropes we're familiar with, and deep storytelling entirely new to the genre. Here, we play as Zagreus, son of the titular Hades, God of the dead and the Underworld of Greek myth. Your objective is to escape your father's realm and reach the world of the living - a task he will not let you achieve so easily. And it is from this simple premise that the whole story unfolds, with masterful execution.
Right from the start, you're greeted with a colorful cast of characters originated from different Greek legends and the unique relationships of each one with our protagonist. Then, when you actually attempt an escape and fail on your first couple of tries (as is common practice in Roguelike games), you'll learn that these same characters not only acknowledge your efforts but also have their own thoughts about it if you're willing to listen. As Zagreus advances further in his attempts, your relationship with them will also advance each time you meet. With enough development, you may even become intimate with your favorite characters, and maybe new kinds of relationships will surface... But that is up to the player to discover.
But Hades' success wouldn't be complete if the game didn't get the basics right. The actual escapades are filled with action-packed gameplay, where you fight your way through enemies and bosses alike, making your way up the Underworld. To help with that, you're presented with six different weapons to choose from, each one vastly different from the others, and Zagreus' divine family from Mount Olympus will also show up frequently to aid in his task with a plethora of boons to upgrade his skills in unique ways. With such levels of customization and an already enormous enemy variety, you'll hardly ever come to close to having two similar runs.
Lastly, the technical standpoint leaves nothing to be desired. The game is gorgeous to look at, each character perfectly expresses their personalities and divinity in their design, the level design and enemies consistently communicate the feeling of each biome of the Underworld, and the soundtrack boosts to whole experience through the roof with pieces that convey emotions from ease to tension to outright bloodlust. Besides that, the game runs smoothly on even an average PC, and the controls feel tightly responsive - can't blame that death on missing inputs now.
At the time of writing, Hades has already left Early Access looking like a masterpiece, but Supergiant Games doesn't seem to call it done. The game already packs hundreds of hours' worth of content and a seemingly infinite amount of recorded voice lines, but the team of developers promises to keep support alive and running for a long while before moving on to the next big hit. Given this level of dedication, what the future has in store for Hades sure is nothing short of god-like.

Hades is the story of Zagreus, a Teenager who “can’t even” with his dad and decides to run away and smash as much stuff as he can on his way out, a plan that is complicated a bit by him being the son of Hades and the house he tries to leave is the Underworld.

Hades is a roguelike whose isometric look look and combat mechanics owe a debt to Diablo, but instead of an endless climb up the equipment ladder, it feeds you precious story morsels to keep you motivated.

Hades is a Supergiant Games title, a pedigree that signifies incredible art direction, excellent writing and experimental storytelling.

Hades is the roguelike I’ve played for 150 hours straight during the last month.

Why, you ask? Let me count the reasons:

The combat is excellent: Zagreus, the protagonist, has two attack types, a dash, a spell and one to two ults, all of them easy to pull off, but only studious application of each will see you succeed. He starts each run with one of six very different weapons, and picks up powerups along the way that can alter the gameplay significantly. The system is easy to pick up but has a lot of hidden depth, the action is spectacular at times but almost always legible, each of the four biomes Zagreus can cross have their own, completely unique collection of foes and It. Just. Never. Gets. Old. I grew weary of Diablo combat, and Dead Cells combat. I never grew tired of Hades combat.

The plot and the writing are top notch, the best Supergiant Games has produced yet, and that’s saying something. The characters in here are now the definite interpretation of the Greek Pantheon for me (did I mention the setting of Hades is the Greek Pantheon?). All the characters consist only of a few still images and a ginormous amount of recorded lines, but they all come across as so human and deep and charming and likable… Ok, Ares comes across as the well-meaning but weird uncle who doesn’t get left alone with the kids much, and Zeus is a bit of a buffoon, but still, you just have to be charmed by even them. They are family. A very dysfunctional family, sure, and the stuff they all go through goes to some pretty dark places at times, but it all finds a heartwarming, hopeful finale.

Well, ok, Theseus is a dick.

But what’s really surprising, and what really feels like squaring the circle, is how tightly interwoven combat and story are. Little pieces of plot are dispensed throughout every run, and every death nets you a double dose, when Zagreus returns to the house of Dad and gets to talk to all his friends (and Hades). The action delightfully informs the plot, and the plot provides delicious context for the action. The pacing is excellent: Talky time provides the occasional breather during the high octane action, but it never overstays its welcome. It sounds like a contradiction, but they did pull it off: Hades really is a great roguelike with an excellent story.

The production values are through the roof: The art is creative, highly detailed, vibrant, wonderful. The soundtrack grabs you and never lets go. Logan Cunningham is the god of sexy voices, but all the other voice actors bring their A game, too.

Are there quibbles? Well, the poisonous enemies in the final realm can go die in a fire. And I’m a bit resentful that I had to activate Easy Mode to push through a certain difficulty spike. But that’s my personal failing.

TLDR: Supergiant Games did it again. Buy this game, play this game. And say Hi to my gal Artemis for me.

This is a great step forward for cross-platforming, even if it doesn’t involve actual multiplayer itself; but the point here is that a game as investing, frustrating yet rewarding as Hades has this function is definitely noteworthy and something other games are SURE to adopt in the future.

The story is great: layered even in its ‘repetitious’ Groundhog-Day-like storytelling, the gameplay is nice and punchy, and the soundtrack adds to the relentless challenge that is Hades. As the Son of Hades, Zagreus must escape his father’s clutches or forever suffer the Underworld’s all-encompassing grasp on the world of the dead. Zagreus must break the cycle and find out the truth about his mother, if he can even get himself there.

As your skills grow, you'll notice your weapon preferences change over time. I initially prefered the bow but now favour the sword. I'm giving the game an 8 not a 10 as I have beaten the final boss a few times and unsure what's left to do. I know there are bounties but I wished the game had more 'stuff' to do. Overall I've played this game for 50 hours and will play for another 50. Unlike what the bad reviews are saying, this game is not a grind. Even Triple A studios barely offer this quality.

But let´s speak about the important part, the game.
It plays super smooth, every weapon feels very different, combined with the upgrades(boons) you get, every run feels different. There is not one overpowered way you have to play to be overpowered, there are many different combinations to make the best of your run.
Roguelite elements are great and make you try "just one more run".

But the superior part, which made it a solid 10, is the storytelling and progressing. Every run you learn something new about the situation, characters and the motives. It is superb storytelling in a genre, where most believed there is no actual way to progress a story.

I highly recommend this game to action fans.

The Greek legends are full of conflicts between the gods and those are all related to each other. This is transferred well into the game. They are like a family with a lot of problems. The game even won the literary Hugo Award to give you some perspective how good it is. For me this was amazing and I continued even after obtaining the platinum trophy to see the outcomes of some stories. Sometimes you can chose between options. This was something I was worried about but it is not the weakness I thought. It is a true strength. In approx 100 runs I never encounter a truly weak set up. I discovered instead some amazing abilities, combinations and different options. Even some abilities I avoided first were good, some even worth reversing my opinion. For example: My least liked weapon became my favorite and the weapon I thought was best became my least used (The game has an interesting system in teasing you to chose different weapons). I admit that I use some abilities or better said set up more often but the different set ups keep it fresh. The next strength are the things you can unlock. There are so many helpful things. Be it new weapons, helpful rooms, appearing treasures, cosmetic set ups, abilities and bonuses. You always have new stuff to do or unlock. Rarely ever have I encounter a game that succeeds in keeping everything this fresh and enjoyable. Then there is the graphic. The art style is excellent and I like the hand draw graphics. For games like this I would always buy an artbook. The music is even better. You will encounter many awesome tracks and there are 2 characters who maybe give you some of the best songs in the game. To round up this experience I did not encounter a single serious bug or glitch. Overall this is my favorite game of the year and deserves my full praise. Never have I encountered a game that keeps being this refreshing from start to finish. Be it the story or gameplay everything is excellent and well thought out. Even the difficulty is correctly balanced as god mode gives you more resistance with each death until you don't die easily. A well thought out system. An easy 10/10 for me Expand

I highly recommend this game if you like roguelike games. The gameplay is solid and the art style is amazing. The story is not that interesting but it is good enough for a game like this. I have have absolutely no idea why I'm rating this game a ten, it's pointless, the score is already super high without my participation. Easily the best roguelite (even tho it's not my favourite), worthy of its title of second best game of 2020.
Just check how many bad and mixed reviews thre are from critics, you won't need confirmation after that.

Defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.

The best game I've played in a while and extremely addictive. At first I wasn't very excited by the isometric view and I was doubtful that it would surpass Dead Cells as a rogue lite but, boy, was I wrong. I finished the game weeks ago, including the epilogue, but I keep playing it daily.

I had honestly never played a rogue-lite or whatever it's called before, but this game was a great introduction to the genre. The animation style is great and the characters are all unique with interesting voice acting and dialogue. The gameplay is enjoyable and even though you repeat a lot of the same areas it stays very fresh and fun. One of the best games of 2020 and hell 2021 so far.

The gameplay is the best rogue-like i have ever played yet, everything so fresh everytime you go, mission for doing different builds and actually liking them and changing my style mid game, that's a rare feat.
Even though everything is a 10/10, The best I have to say is the characters and their motivations, backstories, interactions, everything! It's been a long time since I have connected with so many NPCs as this game, you start caring for every each of one them, and they a re all so different!!
I hope this studio makes more games like this from different mythologies!!

    Visuals: 10/10

    - Quality: A pretty fast-paced and cluttered game, yet it is easy to make sense of what is happening. The different abilities and weapons all have nice animations. Each location has a unique look and enemies. (10/10) - Style (-uniqueness): The game has a cartoonish but very stylish look. The menus have this usual Greek feel to them. (10/10) - User Interface: Everything

    - Style (-uniqueness): The game has a cartoonish but very stylish look. The menus have this usual Greek feel to them. (10/10)
    - User Interface: Everything is fairly easy to see and understand by a glance. (10/10)

    Sound: 10/10

    - Voice acting: This is one of the best parts of the game. The voice acting is amazing, and every character has a very suiting voice that conveys their personality. (10/10)
    - Music: There are incredible hits in this game with and without vocals. My favourite little thing is that after you clear the room, all the instruments stop except the bass. (10/10)
    - Sound effects: Every little thing has its own sound effect, my favourite is that every god has their own little effect when you get a boon from them. (10/10)

    Gameplay: 8.8/10

    - Controls (ease of use): The most important part of the game. I tried keyboard and controller as well, I like the controller better. You have to dodge a lot in this game and there’s a lot of button smashing, I feel like just holding down the button should elicit the same result – yes, one of my favourite buff. (9/10)
    - Unique systems: Well, standard rouglite-deckbuilding formula. You get stronger and stronger as you progress. You can also get temporary buffs & debuffs. It is possible to create nice combos, but I wouldn’t say there’s much very surprising. The delightful thing is that there are a lot of weapons that you can also edit. A lot of variety here. (8/10)
    - Difficulty (settings, scaling, etc.): I think there is a steep learning curve here, but after you understand all the enemies and bosses you can feel quite competent. I heard that there is also a “god mode” so if you are only interested in the story, it is possible to just enjoy that. You can also make the game more difficult later on, so fair play to the developers here. (10/10)
    - Grind: There is a lot of content here that you CAN grind for. I think that completing the main story takes a bit too much time, but I never really had to grind for anything. (8/10)

    Story/Lore/World: 9.8/10

    - Characters: All the characters are from Greek mythology and I think they are all fleshed-out pretty well. Their personalities are well reflected in all aspects of the game, e.g., in the case of gods, even their boons reflect their personalities. (10/10)
    - Writing quality: Incredible and smart writing. The mythology really comes alive, the characters and the world feel alive. (10/10)
    - World design: I think it was really clever how the developers could fit a rougelike game in the Underworld, you really feel like you are progressing through it in an attempt to escape. I would have preferred more locations. (9/10)
    - Story/Lore: Greek mythology, what else do you want? Of course, there is a lot of material to work here, and I think the developers have done a fairly good job of showcasing the Underworld. There are a lot of stories and lore here (10/10).

    Technical: 10/10

    - Optimization: Never had any issues. (10/10)
    - Bugs: Never encountered any bugs. (10/10)

The game is a pretty good roguelite. What is good is that the story and characters are just soo interesting that dying is not as bad as it is. The gameplay is very fun although it gets repetitive at times due to the small level diversity. The game has soo much to do in it and can give you 70+ hours of fun.

Do you know what I'm going to do after writing this review? Play Hades again - for fun. It's just so damn good. Maybe I'll be able to escape hell, maybe not, but I'll be happy to try again.

As with previous titles from Supergiant Games, Hades features stellar artwork and music, masterfully creating a world of Greek mythology. The fast-paced action feels great, and the roguelike elements create a synergy with the game’s story, resulting in a truly addictive experience.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
