With sparse environments that burst into color as the action unfolds, solid level design, and a low hand-holding, high satisfaction difficulty curve, Gorescript is already a title worth picking up, but with the fast-paced, visceral combat of its early nineties inspirations and the tight, responsive controls of a modern engine, this release becomes the rare homage of spirit over form that understands what made the arcade FPS of yesteryear great, and adds only the modern amenities that make it better. Definitely worth a try.

    Introduction

Gorescript is a fast-paced shooter based on games like DOOM and Quake. It fits in well with these examples and it is very clear what type of game it is. This is through the use of health and armour drops and the overall gunplay and level design.

    Sound

The music used sounds great and fits very well with the gameplay, so no complaints there. However, the sounds used for the guns can be very hit and miss. For example, the shotgun sounds good whereas the rocket launchers explosion sounds very distant and weak.

    Graphics

The style of graphics is very appealing to look at and each enemy looks totally different, allowing you to recognise what you are fighting as soon as you get line of sight. The blood effects are also good, as every hit an enemy takes leaves splatters of blood all around them.

    Story

No story to be found here, which isn’t a bad thing if the core gameplay is really fun, which luckily, it is.

    Gameplay

Gorescript is very fast paced which is why it is lucky that the controls feel so natural when playing. The gunplay also feels very fluid and is a lot of fun as you go darting from one room to the next, blasting the enemies with the variety of weapons you can find. Talking of finding weapons, there are many secrets to be found in each level, which is where you get the weapons. There are also powerups to be found, such as the bloodlust goggles, which can have an effect on how you play.

However, it is not all good as the game can be extremely unforgiving. Now I am not going to say this is a negative point, but instead as a warning to some people. This game can get you very frustrated as it only takes a few hits before you die and are sent back to the start of the level. So, for people who don’t like that sort of thing, this isn’t the game for you. One thing I don’t like about the game though, is that it starts to feel repetitive as there seems to be only 3 types of enemies and this just does not feel like enough. However, this is the only real negative I can think of.

    Replay Value

I feel that there is a lot of replay value to be found here. There are 5 difficulties for you to choose from and 2 extra game modes, Permadeath and Blackout. With the added bonus of a leaderboard at the end of each level, there are many reasons to play Gorescript again and again.

    Options

The game supports rebindable keys, which is always a must for any PC game and has a decent amount of graphics options.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe Gorescript is a great game to add to your library with a lot of fun to be had. It is just in need of some new enemy types and maybe some changes to the sounds and this game could be a 9/10.

If you are nervous about buying the game, luckily the developers have included a demo so you can try before you buy. This seems to be becoming a bit of a rarity nowadays, so it is always good when a developer provides one.
