I rather liked the game, the music is very cool it blends with the game, however the only problem is that the developers didn't put any save points, so when you start a level YOU MUST FINISH IT!

First-person platforming has always been a really mixed bag, titles like Mirror’s Edge have tried to achieve the style of a parkour artist from the first-person perspective with limited success. Then there are titles like Portal that rely less on precision and more about flinging you across the room. But in both of those titles, the combat was never the main focus, but that’s all set to change with Ghostrunner. Set in a dystopian future, you are the Ghostrunner a cybernetic katana-wielding ninja and honestly, I could wrap this review up now. You are a ninja cyborg, enough said, Game of The Year! Round of applause! Ok see you next time.

Yeah, unfortunately, it is not that Simple

Ghostrunner has a lot going for it, while you are pretty much going through a series of corridors and factories I’m loving the cyberpunk aesthetic which even on minimalist settings looks incredible. I mean sure, it reminds me that my computer will sooner burst into flames then run Cyberpunk 2077 properly in a few weeks but I was wall-running, dodging and cutting grunts in half with synthwave in the background I was having heaps of run. That is when the game was at least agreeing with me while controlling Ghostrunner is fairly simple with jumping, dashing, wall-run hookshot and slow-mo bullet time, the game usually puts you into encounters with a lot of split-second thinking.

The basic crux of the game is you enter a section filled with gun touting enemies and you can’t progress until you’ve cleared it of all of them, further more there is no health bar, everything is one hit kill so if you get shot or miss a jump you have to restart the encounter all over again. The best way to take care of enemies is to jump towards them, enter slow mod so you can dodge their bullets and proceed to remove their spine from the rest of their body

While I do applaud the game for making it incredibly quick to resume encounters with nary any loading screens in sight, things can get pretty frustrating in some of the larger encounters, you have several different types of enemies all with their own different types of attacks to prepare for not to mention most of the time there is this shield protecting them that you have to get rid of first. The real issue is that there really is no room for error, taking a breather for a second just to get your surroundings will most likely result in a game over so you could find yourself constantly repeating segments so be prepared to die a lot, and the game knows this highlighting the number of deaths after every chapter

I have never been one to suffer from Motion Sickness but even I was feeling woozy in some areas of the game, the continuous bobbing up and down of the character and twist and turns when it comes to wall-running especially in later chapters when you have to slow-mo jump behind guards with shields around them.

There is a story but honestly when you are cybernetic ninja is that even relevant, you have a disembodied voice known as the Architecture talking with you throughout the entire game continuously going on about the antagonist of the game and what you need to do to save everyone. I’ve been wary of voices like that since the original Bioshock, just wondering when and/or if they inevitably turn on me.

Ghostrunner has a lot going for it, its an awesome concept that really could have benefited from some more fine-tuning. While there were times I was getting visually frustrated in segments, I couldn’t put the game down for long. It reminds me a lot of Katana Zero, basically the same slow-mo ninja concept but as a retro 2D game and I absolutely adored that title. While Ghostrunner is undoubtedly playing second fiddle in regards to Video Games about dystopian futures in 2020 It is still a game I would highly recommend checking out.

While not released with the rest of the platforms, there is a Switch version planned for release next month and I’m curious on how the game will look, I’m terrified about the thought of gyro-controls, cause flailing my arms around brings back some painful memories of the Wii.

The worst difficulty of a video game. the difficulty instead of being entertaining and fun the only thing it does is frustrate you, and a nonsense was that 1-shot enemies kill you. The game itself is good but it has a horrible difficulty and the controls felt exaggeratedly fast, I don't think I don't like the fast controls like warfreme but in this game you need to have reflexes like a **** ninja

    Ghostrunner (PC)

(+) Fantastic variety of gameplay that makes every level feel unique
    (+) Addictive challenging combat

(-) Frustrating controls where commands register improperly - especially when wall running
    (-) The payoff/reward feels underwhelming

The game is pretty good for what it tries to do: a first-person platformer. However it is in essence an one-trick pony so it is extremely subjective if you're gonna like it. It immediately throws you into its simple action which will be obviously loved by many but for the rest of us the game can feel like an unnecessary chore.

The story is presented to you via dialogue with a few other characters, but you tend to be too focused on playing to pay any heed to it. The gameplay is relatively smooth and the graphics are fair for a cyberpunk setting, albeit a little drab. The game is challenging at times, but that is primarily due to the randomness factor, confusing controls (especially on a controller), and camera being difficult to align in combat. Checkpoints are thankfully plentiful in this game, making it more relaxing to play.

My biggest peeve with the game, which significantly weighed on my enjoyment of it, was how it would initially keep crashing. It seems to be a known issue, and the best solution I found was to remove any GPU overclock, keep raytracing disabled, and limit the FPS.

Personally, I think the game looked better with raytracing off, and although not everyone may agree, I thought leaving some motion blur on was actually quite nice. Overall, Ghostrunner was an enjoyable parkour experience, albeit devoid of an actual story and had issues with performance-based crashing.

I liked the movement, music and cyberpunk design (especially in the city parts, the industrial halls were just plain boring ) but thought it was a bit repetitive. The game can be easily completed without the use of skills and the story was rather forgettable.

Boss fights were frustrating and overall I felt Mirrors Edge did the whole parkour movement way better.

+ Satisfying slasher and movement mechanics.

    + Steep learning curve.
+ Different stylish skins for the swords.
+ The collectibles reveal narrative details.

    CONS:
    - Badly implemented Ray-Tracing (RT) functionality: it mostly makes little difference and taxes the framerate by 77.5% (i.e., 200 FPS at the highest settings become 45-50* solely by activating RT (with DLSS on). Unacceptable! Patches required.
    - Only one difficulty: the one-hit-kill system combined with aim-bot enemies and the limited visual often make you feel like you die because of sheer bad luck!
    - It gets more frustrating than challenging in some situations.
    - Not worth more than 20 quid (26 bucks) in the current state.
    - It does require high FPS due to its fast-paced nature.
    - Not very charismatic characters.
    - Underwhelming narrative so far, without cutscenes.
    - Such a gorgeous looking game should have a photo mode.

    FINAL SCORE: 7.1 / 10.

With potential for an 8+ if it gets patched.

But the supports to the undeniably central role of the gameplay are shaky at best: both the plot and environments feel very superficial and bland, even painfully so at times. The music and sounds overall are nothing particularly memorable too.

Ghostrunner is to be admired for doing one thing exceptionally well, but it’s not an excuse to half-ass everything else.

Pros: The graphics are great. The story is intriguing. The gameplay is fun and the platforming is top notch. Objectively I believe they nailed everything they went for.

Con: It's frustratingly difficult. (subjective opinion that effects my fun with the game.) I played The Surge, Furi, Dark Souls, Sekiro, OG Megaman, Nioh, Ninja Giaden, I understand difficult games with good balance and how difficulty correlates to satisfaction and personal growth. Ghost Runner is the hardest game I've ever played, other than literally broken games or bullet hell games. It's rewarding as hell and the checkpoints and reload times are EXTREMELY fair. .1 seconds to load back in. But the game just demands flawless perfection, in my opinion, to a fault. I would have enjoyed the game immensely more if you could have a 1 shot shield, that could only be restored upon death or killing like 10+ enemies. There's nothing wrong with the game, nothing is broken or set up to be unfair. If you die it is your fault, but I get grinded down to the brink of gamer rage with how willing this game is to kick you in the teeth over and over just for a fleeting rush of dopamine when you succeed.

The reasons many (me included) will play on regardless, is because the music is really good. If you listen to a lot of synth like me, it's admittedly generic and sounds like any other high quality synth mix. Meaning, it's doubtful you'll be reciting tracks by name if you hear a friend using the OST as study music. It fits the game though, and the gameplay enhances the soundtrack's vibe as they work together to form a very good Cyberpunk atmosphere. The graphics look great and perfectly sync with the soundtrack and gameplay style. In particular I found the gore effects and the neon lights to be rather beautiful, and the level design is extremely unique and traversal feels more like puzzle/problem solving than straight up first person action.

The gameplay, if you can remain calm through repeated deaths, is pretty damn good. As you progressively battle tougher enemies, you gain access to more abilities to even out the experience, granted that you have the mettle to try over and over again. Sword slashes feel really powerful and satisfying. Slicing an enemy is two has never been as rewarding and empowering than this; enemies die in one hit as well, and the feedback is instant and accurate. Wherever you were aiming determines where the dismemberment takes place. From their ankles to their neck, and various diagonal slashes, it's the kind of stuff you see in Shadow Warrior reboots or Metal Gear Rising, without the grindy battle to get the kill.

Ghostrunner is a skill gamer's game. It's not for casuals, and it's not for the temperamental. For those willing to tough it out, they'll find a fantastic game with engaging mechanics, and incredible atmosphere. Middle-tier gamers will probably still like it, but struggle more than others. For casual gamers who play every game on easy, skip this one for now, there's no easy mode and it puts most "hard" games to shame. But it's not difficult in a broken or meaningless way, I think the developers knew we could handle it and didn't want to make an easy game. This kind of confidence in our skills, in a way, is empowering.

where it becomes pretty frustrating for me is the controls can be buggy and so can the game. I played a level where you had to climb a reactor with spinning lazers and shoots fire AOEs, died about 100 times getting the timing down and learning the patters. When I cut the second cable, it froze during the cinematic. After all I had gone through to get up top, for it to freeze was infuriating. Sometimes wall runs don't start, sometimes you try to dash attack an enemy and fly over them to your death. Can't fault the game TOO much because at least it's priced as a B tier game, but a little more polish would have been appreciated.

It much more lends a feeling of timed button pushing(prompts) than controlling a bad ass cyber ninja(usually).

There is a puzzle mechanic when you enter cyberspace which started out boring, became interesting, then got frustrating and I turned it off. Not frustrating in that the solution wasn't clear, but because it was my absolute MOST HATED ASPECT games. It was timed platforming, where you have to wait for a cube to rotate so you can jump on it. Awful. Usually if you mess up you can restart right away(and you will die frequently) and complete a task entirely in maybe 10 seconds. In this puzzle you just had to sit and wait to retry your floaty jumping on a rotating cube, after waiting about 20 seconds for the proper alignment. If you fall(and of course because you're rotating I did) you have to WAIT 20 seconds watching the platform move into position...again...and again...and again. Terrible judgement on the part of the developer to put something like that in the game. You cannot skip the puzzle sections, you can not restart at the beginning of the the puzzle section. I just restarted the entire level because I couldn't be bothered redoing that section based on where the checkpoint was in the puzzle. I will probably avoid games by these developers for that reason alone. DO NOT PUT TIMED PLATFORMING SECTIONS IN YOUR GAMES. Timed platforming sucks, and water levels suck, don't do it. Stop doing it.

The slow mo mechanic is in this game is cool, but only activates when you are in the air. This makes it difficult to do more complex moves without using the grappling hook, because you basically need to bunny hop, and because jumping is floaty, it can be hard to tell when you are in the air or not. They should have just used a simple toggle for slow motion. You also basically need to use it because in most cases the enemy tracking will hit you if the enhanced mobility slo motion provides isn't used.

DON'T PUT TIMED PLATFORMING IN YOUR HYPER FAST NINJA MURDER SIMULATOR.

A fantastic game, but the difficulty isn't for everyone, but if you have the skills, this game is definitely for you. It has a good story, great mechanics, and Wonderful graphics.

Shuriken parts are extremely ridiculous, the game suddenly turns fps and becomes unplayable with the controller.

It's a good game but certain just really bugged me. Starting off with the bad things were that the shield balls were over used. Soon as they were introduced it was like every single enemy had them making the bullet deflection perk pointless. After you destroy a shield ball you are then already too close to deflect a bullet.
Also the enemies aim to where you are dashing before you have

Also the enemies aim to where you are dashing before you have dashed there. Say you press dash at the same time the enemies shoot then they lock onto your location. So many games particular games made by smaller studios have this mechanic. Its annoying and makes the AI feel like, well, AI. I like a challenge and the difficulty of the game is good but this is extremely frustrating because I am pressing dodge at the correct time so the enemy shouldn't be able to calculate that fast. Another huge frustration and this is so obvious and that is the fact strafe is binded to dash. So if you like why can't I strafe without dashing afterwords? There is several buttons on my controller that do nothing and you didn't think to bind any of them to some sort of strafe manoeuvre? Another thing is the sling hooks are dumb. Sometimes you goto sling on them and you get thrown backwards rather then swinging forwards. Then also you can't tell if an enemy is in melee distance. The sword has a bit of range on it which is cool but you can't tell if the enemy is in range so you goto hit them and they shoot you because you missed your swing. It would have been nice to have a red marker to indicate that the target is in range. People mite think I am being picky but these things I have mentioned would overall improve the flow of the gameplay. This game runs on smoothness and when you are moving around and then you goto swing on a hook and you get thrown backwards it throws you off or you goto kill an enemy but you were a touch out of range you don't expect it.
Overall the story isn't bad but its nothing thats gonna make you grab the popcorn. But that's not what this game is for. It's more of a shooting puzzle type game that gets you thinking quick and makes you try and work out how each encounter must be dealt with. Overall character movement isn't bad but just feels sluggish without sprint in a game like this. I wont take marks off for that thou as this is more of a preference. It is quite fast pace and you need to react to things quickly and always be aware of your surroundings with what enemy to focus on next or what platform to jump to. The map design is cool and the theme really suits the game well.
Sadly trophies are a rarity and I hope future games are a little more generous with this. I had been playing for around an hour, finished a few levels and got a few collectibles and not a single trophy. Another thing I wouldn't take marks off the review for as its not part of the actual game but just thought I would note if someone was hoping to give it a quick play through in order to boost trophy score.
You can play this game with a PS Plus subscription so I highly recommend you check it out.

This game sucks! If I’m not dying over and over again to the annoyingly designed enemies, I’m trying to figure out a silly, loose story that’s just dumb and poorly pieced together. Conceptually, you can tell they had a cool idea. The game is however one of the single worst games I’ve ever played. PS5 - WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. It’s so bad they had to have it as a PS Plus title!

This game is very pretty, but I didn't get very far due to the difficulty. I can tell there is a lot of fun to be had here if you can build up the skills, but I didn't feel motivated to build them, and the best difficult games make me feel motivated to get better at them (Elden Ring, Metroid Dread). I just don't think this game is in that category.

The last boss design in the game is disappointing

If you know what you're getting into, Ghostrunner will be a great game for you to play. Though, its fast-paced and one-shot gameplay might not be for everyone.

The easiest way to describe Ghostrunner is to call it an illegitimate child of Hotline Miami and Mirror’s Edge. It fails to match the latter in terms of body awareness, but it makes up for it with well-thought-out, satisfying level design and looks great regardless of whether you’re putting your parkour skills to the test, or slicing enemies with your katana. Are you ready to figure out the very limits of your adrenaline tolerance? Then play Ghostrunner, a devilishly difficult action game let down only by its slower platforming portions.
