I cant stop playing endwalker. The story was truly incredible. Square have forged a masterpiece that isnt just Endwalker, but the rest of the content combined. With endwalker being allegedly the end of the current story arc, this, now seemingly finished product is a true masterpiece.

now leaving aside my personal love for the game, there have been some launch issues but those are nothing really and are just a testament that this game is too popular since there is too many people trying to play it at the same time.
the story was great, it wrapped up alot of questions and plot threads that have been open since the release of 2.0 and some since 1.0, they also have mastered a new way of telling story through the use of maps and how to revile them to the player with also new work done on the cutscenes side.

in terms of gameplay i have leveled and played warrior (tank), summoner (dps), Scholar (healer) and tbh the game feels it's best now where in they did alot of QoL additions to all the jobs and reworked some like the summoner and my conclusion to it that gameplay feels quite good even better than shb in some cases and in general removing 90s jobs and unifying all jobs on 60s / 120s rotations have made the game less confusing for some and didn't really effect the skill gap too much.

the zones were all magnificent, each offering something different and getting it's screen time and everything, while not being too bad in terms of unlocking flying.

the fights were really awesome be it dungeons, boss fights or solo fights in the msq they all have been great, and not to forgetting to mention the 2 extreme fights on offer at the release they both are really good and continue the same great design that started in shb while not being too difficult for people to kill and farm easily with random groups while people still learning their new versions of their jobs all and all 10/10.

Lastly the music, it has been exceptional through out the whole expansion using the greatest iconic melodies of the game and older FF games while also creating new tracks to jam to, for anyone that likes video games music this is a masterpiece by all accounts.

TLDr: game is too good go play now or at least when servers are less crowded and you can log in

Man, this expansion has been incredible, and in my opinion it's worth more than a full price AAA-title.

It started strong, and then after a short while it blasted me with something that I expected to be the final boss of the game, which confused me a lot, since I was still around level 83 and max level is 90. I was asking myself "How the hell are they gonna top this now?" and this has become an ongoing pattern of Square Enix delivering something massive, only to deliver something more massive later, and it kept going like this until the real final boss at level 90.

The pacing of the story was a bit slow at some earlier points, and the fact that you didn't get to fight for quite a while during the first quarter of the xpac was a bit annoying it times, but all of this was just temporary, as the story kept getting more intense and intense.

After finishing the story I was absolutely speechless. I was happy, I was sad, I was crying, I was smiling, I was feeling pumped, all of that at the same time. Never has a game, nor any kind of movie, book or story moved me so much, and at this point I consider the story of Final Fantasy XIV to be the best piece of fiction I've ever gone through, making even my all time favourites like Babylon 5, Lord of the Rings, the MCU movies, Naruto, One Piece, Gurren Lagann, Mass Effect, Fallout, Neverwinter Nights, Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger, the Mana series, Terranigma, Earthbound, Undertale and the Witcher absolutely pale in comparison. They don't get even close to what I felt at the end of Endwalker.

Now story aside, regarding some gameplay aspects. They made vast improvements to the game. Skills and casts feel way more responsive now, and changes to the classes & jobs in the game have improved a lot of things. The overhauled aethernet teleport system is a massive quality of life improvement and with the removal of belts, which were just unnecessary, a good amount of inventory space has been added.

The new features of having NPCs following you around during the story were a really nice addition to game immersion, and despite its controversial reception I liked the new escort and follow minigames that were a recurring part of the story.

One major complaint I've always had with FFXIV expansions since Heavensward was, that the new zones often look like large, mostly flat, empty areas with a major lack of detail. This has changed in this expansion. All the new zones look very rich and detailed, even the third zone which you expect to be very empty based on the lore.
They have a lot of verticality and the terrain feels more natural with lots of hills, elevation, and comparatively few invisible walls.

Then there's the music. Oh, the music...
Usually in a FFXIV xpac the music is fairly good, with only 1-2 tracks being rather bad/annoying and 1-2 tracks being noticably great. This expansion however we only have 1 annoying song (Labyrinthos daytime music), but a vast amount of strong, emotional music that fits the setting.
The music in the third zone fills you with a permanent unease and sense of hopelessness like in games like This War of Mine, Frostpunk or Fallout. The music that plays during social cutscenes feels cozy and calming. The themes of the recurring NPCs fill you with joy and pride, as well as nostalgia. And the music of each bossfight unleashes a feeling of epicness that fits the setting, especially the music of the very final fight, which I'm constantly listening to since I've finished the game.

I could go on and on and on with my praise for this expansion, but this would probably exceeed the character limit here on metacritic, so I'll finish with these words:

Final Fantasy XIV is a fantastic story game that I can recommend to anyone who likes fantasy in any way. It may start a bit slow, but it quickly gets better and better.
And once you've finished playing this amazing story game you're getting a great MMORPG with regular content patches every 3.5 months on top of it, for the typical sub based MMO fee.

I struggled with Stormblood, not being very fond of medieval Asian culture, I remained somewhat stoic.
But Shadowbringer was a huge slap in the face with a deep questioning of myself and what I'm looking for in a mmorpg. This story, this immersion, these characters, everything was absolutely incredible, from start to finish, with each patch, this question: But how will he do to do as well or better than that in the next patch?
The next patch gave me the answer.
Shadowbriner has finished converting me completely to ff, no longer finding my account on wow, especially after all the concerns related to the culture of the company.
I was very scared of Endwalker. I was afraid of being disappointed after Shadowbringer, but it is not.
At the time of writing, I haven't finished the Endwalker story yet, but I already know that for me, what this extension makes me experience is exceptional.

An epic tale of Tolkeinesque proportions delivers a finale for the ages. 10 years on, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker looks to all that came before to create a singularly satisfying ending - and a new beginning.

Fans of the game will need no convincing: Endwalker was made for them and, in many ways, by them. The one consistency across the timeline of FFXIV's growth has been improvement.

Again and again the game just keeps getting better, even when it didn't seem like it could. At any given point, Endwalker doesn't far surpass the peaks of Shadowbringers - though it certainly rivals them - so much as it smooths out the valleys between. Quest design; art design; and especially dungeon design and music quality are phenomenal across the expansion.

Yet, as ever, it is the game's story that makes Endwalker a masterpiece. What they've done is a thing of beauty, but what they did not do is perhaps even more so. It would have been easy for the writers to wrench players' hearts from their chests with a Song of Ice and Fire-style bloodbath. Instead, the game's themes deliver a message that so many of us desperately needed to hear: unyielding determination when facing impending doom; undying hope when facing deepest despair; and boundless love when facing our worst enemies.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is a triumph not just for its brilliant narrative and game design, but for its deep humanity.

I wouldn't characterize any of the other expansions this way. I see a lot of problems that are unique to endwalker. They try to paper over the nonsense with fan service, which works sometimes, but sometimes it's obvious that their own fanservice is creating some of the problems in the story telling. Lots of things don't make any sense. You can see the effects of covid on the development because the whole expansion feels like a fan movie created without a director. It feels like people working on their pet projects and just mashed them all into a product at the end without enough oversite to make sure everything goes well together. It's especially pathetic because it's the completion of a very long story and they clearly had a good storyboard concept for the expansion. But in the execution it's just feels like a bunch of bad decisions being made in work silos where there isn't enough supervision. Most will appreciate the fanservice in the story but don't look any deeper because it isn't pretty. I would've quit this game twice because of it's terrible story if it wasn't my MMO of choice, but there is still a lot of good content here if you ignore the story and other issues. Expand

The new dungeons and trials were incredibly satisfying to play both visually and gameplay wise and the areas are some of the best in the game.
My biggest complaint being a fair amount of reskins were used, although having more choices of color on certain gear is nice, it feels a bit over done and the still rather large lack of hair styles for Viera as well as helmets are mildly frustrating. But, I am just nitpicking at this point.

It has been a driving force in finding peace in my life, and helping to process a lot of things that went on with my mental health and my experience of maturation of my worldview in my 20s which were full of strife, mistakes, and questions of what the point is of living.
This expansion pack explores these themes and executes them in a story that hits me so hard that Its almost theraputic.

In 2019 during the previous expansion: Shadowbringers, I was finishing college at the end of my 20s, reeling from a breakup of an 8-year relationship, and finding the will to live for myself and to find the happiness that I WANTED to seek, and not what others expected me to. So the remainder of the last expansion I managed to find that answer for myself. It was exciting to then have my favorite game wrap up it's first major 11-year long story arc with similar themes to those that had been integral to my growth in my own life the past few years.

I know i'm talking about myself more than the game but this personal background info is the lens through which i'm seeing what makes this game so amazing. I can say that my long-time love for the Final Fantasy series couldn't shield me from criticisms I initially had of this game when it was rebooted, a time during which i only managed to play it for a few months. After coming back in 2016 to see the immense improvement of Heavensward, I was slowly engrossed further and came to the realization that this was probably my favorite game to come back to. So with each expansion since, I've fallen more and more in love with it. This expansion however is a MAJOR leap in quality in almost every aspect from the expansions that came before it.

I still find frustration in things like the "Raubahn EX" server issues during Stormblood, and now the "Login Que Ultimate" that we are dealing with now. But I know that running a game like this, that is finally getting recognition after years of fixing it diligently, listening to the players, and experiencing a WoW refugee migration, cannot be easy. This is especially true with the silicon and semiconductor shortage that definitely makes it difficult and unreasonably expensive to improve the servers like SE had initially planned to. If I put these issues aside... this game is a perfect sendoff for this story arc. Bringing back old names of those we've lost, giving us hope to move on to a brighter future, and always reminding us that Life is precious, and Sorrow and Joy are inextricably linked and must be experienced together in the same life, for there to be of any meaning in either... And the fact that this game reminds me of that, will forever cement this story as among the best stories in a game that I have ever experienced.

Now let's just hope they continue to make Savage and Ultimate raiding as fun and engaging as they have the past few expansions, and that the patches that are to follow over the next few years, can lay down the foundation for more beautiful stories to come.

I've experienced countless different moments in the story, and over the years may have gotten somewhat emotionally attached to a few of the NPCs (Or a lot of them). The Endwalkers early access is the first time in four expansions that I have been able to sit down and play through the game during early access and I was absolutely blown away by the story. Every time I thought I knew where SE was going to go or what they were going to do they absolutely blew me away and turned somewhere unexpected. Throughout the course of the Main Scenario quests I laughed and I cried, I ugly cried a lot. At the end of Shadowbringers I thought SE and Soken would be hard pressed to create a story and the accompanying OST to beat their previous works but they have absolutely gone to the moon and beyond the stars. At this point I have finished the 6.0 MSQ and I know how it goes and even just going through a zone with certain background music will bring me to tears because Soken does suck an unimaginably good job with his music that it still hits just as hard the 10th, 12th, or even 20th time as it did the first time.

I can not wait to see where Square takes us in the future.

Like I remember almost being annoyed at how much it rained in Thavnair; and then I remembered the thavnairian rain we had to collect to upgrade stormblood resistance materials. Same with Sharlayan and finally finding out how all the scions got their tattoos. Aside from the main msq, the devs really did go back and make sure that all those sub plot points and lore were handled particularly well.

This is the reward though, FFXIV: Endwalker is the greatest payoff for players who love their game. I would call it very fan servicey, but in a good way, because it has been earned and built upon the years of previous content. The music is S class work, the story twists and leads you on, the devs made smart use of in game functions and mechanics to be used as very well done story telling and immersion moments. While we only have access to a couple of "endgame" fights at the moment, they are pretty fun and unique, and there isn't much reason to doubt the raid tiers and other extreme encounters will falter thanks to the dev team's constant expanding of ideas on their encounter front. Class design is also very well done and realized. While a couple of classes seem a little left behind as is the usual with these types of games and MMOs, everyone is still viable, and some very needed reworks were handed out to the classes that really needed them for Summoner and Monk. If you like XIV already, then you will most likely love this expansion and don't need a review to tell you otherwise, but if you're an outsider looking in, there is a free trial and we would love to have you, and if you put in the time, you won't be disappointed. Hours. Went to a dumpster. And I haven't even finished Stormblood yet. I don't care about Endwalker for now. I have almost two full expansions to complete before it. Yet there are people who just stand afk for days in Limsa taking that server capacity by using clicker software preventing you from being kicked for inactivity.

As it comes to Square Enix:

I find blaming the launch issues on semiconductor shortage and COVID a convenient excuse and insulting at best.
This exp has been planned since well before the world fell apart. Once hardware started becoming a problem, SE had more than enough time to acquire it and get it up and running before this launch. Yes, there may be queues to buy the hardware now and you have to make orders in advance, but the player spike and queues were there 6 months ago in a huge gap between new content updates when servers are supposed to be half empty. What did they expect?

They are using it as an excuse and nothing more. My guess is that there was a financial decision made not to add servers due to cost despite the fact that Endwalker sales were successful. Which yes, may be due to current world issues. And this is fine. I accept the reality of that business decision. What I struggle to accept is twisting it into this "oh poor us, we can't find hardware"

The auto industry is suffering because of the sheer volume of chips they need. SE only required a fraction of that to add servers.

There's nothing that can be done about it. It is what it is and I accept that. It just really upsets me that we are being fed, what I believe, to be a false narrative as an explanation.

Considering how the previous expansion, Shadowbringers, set the bar considerably high, whatever expansion that followed not only had to address all the needs and wants of current players, but also contest with Shadowbringers.

Having completed the story, unlocked all instances, experienced the new mechanics, played some of the jobs that saw changes as well as tried the new jobs coming with Endwalker, I'd say they did not equal the previous expansion, they have managed to surpass it.

The story is original, yet it not only is great, but it brings value to the previous expansions stories. The soundtrack is amazing and makes for even the most monotonous of tasks to be so much better. The new areas are amazingly detailed, and the themes are so well thought.

I haven't played the game with their English voice cast, played it with the original Japanese voice cast, and here's where I detract some points. Even not being versed in Japanese, it's plain obvious that at some points, the English subtitles feel lackluster compared to the voice acting. But it doesn't make the experience any less epic.

The expansion not only gave me more joy than what I invested in it (the queues were considerable long), but I am looking forward for the content they will bring in the next year.

Without a doubt a great addition to the MMORPG genre.

If you really into deep fantasy lore, this game has it by tons, it won't disappoint you. This release added a couple new quest types to make things more engaging. Escort quests which just basically just exposition as you talk to an NPC while walking around a zone. And stealth missions which, honestly could need a little bit of tweaking as I'm not sure they quite pulled that one off. (It wasn't so bad to make me deduct from my score however).

The new jobs feel great, though I think Sage needs a bit of a buff so dungeons trash pulls feel more comfortable. Reaper is hugely satisfying and fun to play. The other jobs in the game, while I've not played all of them yet, (I will) They seem to build off the successful Shadowbringers formula and add to them to make them slightly more complex and I look forward to optimize some of these jobs in savage content.

Music is absolutely amazing, even the ambient music has you head bobbing, and battle music just slaps.

The zone design in this expansion is probably the better than it has ever been. Previous expansion zones seemed like they were lazily put together, Shadowbringers did a lot to improve on that, and Endwalker is better still. Seems like there is a new thing to discover in every zone, and I fly around often just admiring the vistas and exploring.

All in all this game has my head spinning with how crazy things got in the story. Best Final Fantasy story ever.

Endwalker really knocked it out of the park for me. It feels like the most "final fantasy" of this Final Fantasy's instalments. Its most intense moments will leave you in withdrawals during it's slower acts, but there is so much character work and detail in those slow moments that they are worth giving your full attention to.

I didn't want it to end. All the characters both new and old are so respected by their creators, that when translating to an audience member like me, it becomes effortless to connect with them.

The underlying messages of the expansion, such as the meaning of life, family, friendship, joy and suffering, were imposed on our characters with a fantasy of mind bending magnitude; yet discussed in a way that we can relate with our own lives, and that is a masterful level of communication.

Every new area I was introduced to allowed for some incredible escapism, and of all the expansions, I've never felt as transported as with this one. Accompanied by stunning music and voice acting, the level of immersion was beyond satisfying.

The dungeons were also enjoyable, ranging from great to fantastic. The trials either fun or challenging or both.

I can't wait for the updates to this expansion. One book has closed in this world, and I can't wait for a new one to open.

    P.S.

No more tailing or escort quests ever again though please :)

A truly epic story and journey to the ends of the universe and back. It is unlike anything we have ever seen before in video game history. Driven by the music, beautiful graphics, and amazing game play game play the story, tactfully and emotionally hits at the heart of what makes us human. Of what makes life worth living. Through tragedy, loss, and despair, we find hope, friendship, love. I can't say enough about this game. It was a breathtaking experienc Expand

The experience itself is a spectacle with lengthy cutscenes, a great OST, and exceptional work on visual presentation. This is also the most appealing map design since ARR. Sage is also a welcome return to technical healing since SCH was radically simplified in Stormblood.

This is a Final Fantasy game above all else and actually felt like a singleplayer for its entire run. That's not a bad thing, as this is probably the first Final Fantasy since the era of Sakaguchi's departure that carries the spirit of the franchise forward.

My only misgiving about the entire experience is Zenos. He was used well at the beginning of the expansion and was mercifully written out afterwards. The only solace I take in him showing up to mar an otherwise exceptional experience right at the end is that he will potentially never return again. He is a blight on the story.

Queue errors indeed caused me a lot of gripe. But if I set those aside, my mind has been blown away by the quality of the story and how well it ties up a decade of story telling. My expectations were high to begin with but Endwalker exceeded them. Unforgettable story, music and more, my hat goes off to the wonderful team behind Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, bravo.

Endwalker is an absolute masterpiece in all ways a game needs to be. The gameplay, story, characters, music from Soken, dungeons, zones design, and everything are all crafted with love in such high quality and detail. I thought nothing could be better than Shadowbringers, but Yoshi p and team have surprised us again. Couldnt be happier as a lifelong Final Fantasy fan myself. Yoshi p and team not only has revived FFXIV from its 1.0 state, but has also set a very high bar for Final Fantasy and its genre. I have been playing FFXIV for 8 years and cannot wait what the future brings. Highly would recommend this game to everyone. Expand

If you didn’t like FFXIV before now, Endwalker will do nothing to change your mind. But if you’re in, this emotional rollercoaster will be rolling towards a satisfying conclusion, that absolutely will not disappoint.

FFXIV is currently the best MMORPG available. The main reason is because it’s RPG first, MMO second. The story isn’t just an afterthought, but an integral part of the experience, and everything else revolves around the tale of the Warrior of Light. It’s logical, well-planned, and presented with great, voiced (or not) cut-scenes.
