Disappointed ! 2 for the graphics but otherwise the game is really boring, stupid missions go from A to B (B is always on the other side of the map), you just kill again and again the same guys, you destroy again and again the same enemy cars on the way. Frankly speaking nothing to compare with Far Cry. No doubt that reviewer in magazines have been bribed.

This game should have been called FarDrive 2. I've literally spent more time in my vehicle than in the Grand Theft Auto series. There isn't much variety in the cars though, so it gets pretty repetitive fast.

That said, the missions are really enjoyable and there is no shortage of random fun stuff to do.

On to the review: The story seems a bit lacking in depth and history. The ability to choose your protagonist was a good one in theory, but it seems to have toned down any character development that could have occured. As to gameplay, the more I play this game the more I appreciate being able to choose my own style of play. This is not a game for Halo-style single-objective play. I really enjoy that I don't have to execute my objectives in the way set to me by the game developer. How may times have you played a shooter where you have to run-over-there-and-blow-up-that-AAgun? Nothing kills immersion faster for me than an objective that doesn't make sense. "Why do I have to run up to that tank? I don't want to." In Far Cry 2, no matter what your playing style, there is an alternative. I've been impressed (mostly, but there are some flaws) by the AI in Far Cry 2. Here are some things that impressed me: 1. Cover matters. If they haven't seen you, they don't know you're there. There are no times where enemies just start chasing you. You have to catch their attention before they notice you. On the other hand, they can be a little short-sighted until you start shooting. 2. VISUAL cover matters. Hiding in a bush, tall grass, or behind a thin cover of foliage keeps you hidden, at least to some extent. 3. The AI uses tactics. If you stand on a ridge (or somewhere else you can be seen from), fire off a few rounds, then get under cover and change locations, the enemy will go to the last place you were seen and search from there. This opens all kinds of tactics to be used. I like laying out IEDs then luring the enemy into an ambush. All in all, it's a solid title. I'm excited to see it with a bit more polish. Expand

The best part about this game is that it feels like it's very upfront and honest about what it is. It doesn't pretend to be an RPG. It doesn't pretend to be something as pretentious as Crysis. No, this is Far Cry 2, and it actually lives up to the name. Plot doesn't seem to figure much into the game so far, but that's okay...because the game truly IS open-ended. Sure, you have to go take on missions and there are certain objectives that you have to do, but the world is VERY open. The way I see it is, this is like a MUCH better, fully polished version of what a game like STALKER should be...minus the inventory system. It literally sticks you into the world and there you are. You can find diamonds and upgrade weapons and safe-houses. And the graphics in this game are AMAZING. I'm running it on an 8800GT and it's letting me run it at 1280x960 with all the DX10 features and most details turned all the way up. It looks really great. The lighting and foliage and atmosphere are wonderful. The editor is great too. They've made it even more intuitive than the one for Far Cry is, and it allows you to literally plop yourself right down into your map AS you're making it. Excellent game. And the filesizes are amazing. I was surprised when the game was less than 4GB. Not sure how they did it, but it's good to see a game that isn't an 8GB monster. Expand

I was following the development of this game with great interest. Ever since Operation Flashpoint, back in 2001, I have been seeking a diverse, open landscape in which to develop tactics and strategies, to think ahead, use one's initiative, exploit the weather, find and use cover; in other words, to have an FPS that is steeped in atmosphere, in a 'sense of place', yet which I was following the development of this game with great interest. Video trailers of the game in development showed such promise. In part, this game delivers. The first time my heart stopped, listening to the rustling of the leaves as I was about to squeeze the trigger of the sniper rifle, the sensation was electric. I've stopped at a bus stop in order to simply watch the sunrise, which gave the grass and the hills a golden sheen. Stunning. But I've only been playing for a few days, and there may well be a problem around repetition, since having to criss-cross the beautifully-rendered landscape will decrease the charm of the whole thing. At the moment I find it utterly immersive and compelling, and much more satisfying than Crysis, GTA or Mercenaries (there are echoes of each in this game, strangely enough). But the 'feel' of the weapons, the way the crusty old ones not just look but also sound different, and jam up on you, gives a real viscerality to the gunfights - very exciting. Expand

The realism in the environment is great but two parts of the realism are terrible: no matter who you pull jobs for everyone wants you dead, and it takes way too many shots to kill people. I dont understand why people give this game a bad rating. The graphics are excellent, sound is very good, and story is okay. But the enemies are a little mind less but that really doesn't make a difference unless you play on hard (I play on medium) This game is enjoyable.

How expected. - Cliched autonavigation intro that every FPS since Half-Life always seems to use... - Glowing Weapons and Ammo: Immersion please? - Console-Style save system - You spend more time driving than playing as a shooter - Inability to focus clearly on visual details while driving/being cabbed - Character Portraits copy each other in look and pose - No women in the Farcry2 Universe - Over-sensitized in-game mouse speed relative to the menu sensitivity - Overall Conceptual Ripoff of the film "Blood Diamond" - Not to mention SecuROM - I could go on, but why bother? It is a challenge to navigate your jeep off road while the benefits in so doing in evading the roving soldiers is advantageous sometimes. I was surprised how realistic and fun the driving can be. Boats and walking or running are other ways to reach points on the map. And because of this there is plenty of freedom in approaching your goals in missions. The goal of completing the missions in the game are fun and addictive. The scenery and music lend to this but are not distracting. In fact I have noticed that nothing as far as trees or rocks seem to be repetitious and each detail of the scenery is rendered naturally and realistically. Out of the graphics area in the game one weapon, the rifle with a scope is a little big and takes up a lot of my field of view in the game- but that is nit picking some. Frequent saves are an annoyance but that is balanced by absolutely no load times or cut scenes. You don't know when you could die so before going through check points it is a good Idea to save. There are no load times in the game in going from one part of a region to another (except for bus rides) which is impressive to me considering the speed at which the amazing graphics are blazing by at times in lengthy journeys. Combat is a little too easy at times. I would suggest an experienced FPS player start at the game at Hardcore. Also the game plays fine and looks wonderful on my system a middle range computer with a 3ghz single core processor and good graphics card. If you plan to buy a game for yourself and enjoy long single player missions this game is for you. The multiplayer component looks promising but I may save it for later. The trouble with this game is, it has so much potential, and fails to achieve it. The first-person shooter aspect of the game isn't done all that well, as people have mentioned, enemies tend to soak up bullets, and whilst OK, the AI isn't anything special. You have to get guns from weapon shops, since enemy guns jam, which is tedious, as it involves MORE driving. The driving wouldn't be so bad if you weren't constantly being shot at by guards at guard-posts you had already captured. There is no motivation to progress in the game. You have the choice to do missions for "buddies", in return for which you get nothing, or the main story missions, which generally involve killing someone, or destroying something, because a psychopathic African warlord wants you to. In return, you get diamonds with which you can buy guns which you can use to do this more efficiently. If the missions were more consequential, if doing things for your buddies actually DID something, if there was less tedious driving, and if the combat was varied even just a LITTLE bit, this would be a good game. Sadly, none of this is the case - the game tries to do many things and does none of them well. Expand

I think the game is fun although I can't really play it for extended periods of time. If checkpoint enemies respawned after, say half a game day or so, that would be fine. The story missions are boring if you don't do the alternate buddy mission. My biggest complaint is that none of the main missions so far help you find The Jackal. The game is flawed, not bad. Naturally you can read most player reviews and see that you either love it or hate it. It isn't that the game is bad, or that the reviewer is bad, it's that some people will like it and some won't. To address some of the key points that these "honest" reviews have made. 1 - The graphics are sub-par for this generation of computing. Nobody expects Crysis like effects in every game, but running on all ultra settings all I can say is "meh". Textures are low resolution, vegetation is unrealistic, and the colour is very drab and washed out. Character animations are so-so. Reeks of "this was meant for an XBOX360". 2 - This game is not realistic. Since when can you throw a vehicle into reverse immediately without stopping and clutching. Where did all the africans go (almost every bad guy is white and english-speaking). Why are there only 5 different types of enemy soldier costumes? Why are all the enemy guns in very poor condition? Do these elite mercenary tough-guys you encounter continuously not know how to maintain their equipment? All I see are weapons which seem to become jam-prone and rotten the second you lay your hands on them. Also, seeing as how the protagonist suffers heavily from malaria, you would think that jamming pliers into bullet holes and ripping the bullets out, or lighting matches and pushing them in the aforementioned bullet holes would possibly result in serious consequences given the harsh environment and poor medical fsacilities. Lets not forget the fact that you can barely sprint for 6 seconds before you basically collapse, blurry eyed. 3 - This game is stressful to play, not fun. Respawning should be left to games that know how to use it, I'm talking about Call of Duty, MMORPGs etc. Clearing a camp or safehouse and finding it immediately repopulated within 5 minutes gets boring (very) fast. As does the fact that you're everyone's worst enemy and they all like to throw jeeps at you every 1/2 half mile you travel. In closing, do not trust the reviews. If you have a great PC, play Crysis or WARHEAD again. You will enjoy it much more. I'm glad I borrowed this from my friend and didn't buy it (he only lasted 4 hours of gameplay before uninstalling also). Expand

It's not at the right depth of field for a PC shooter and anyone used to PC shooters knows what I mean. I think it has something to do with them using the same field of view you'd have on X-Box. Anyway, the gameplay is terrible. As a FPS game player, I want to get in, get my kicks and get out. I want to get right into the action. This game prevents that kind of visceral action at every turn. You'll be keeling over from malaria and be respawning back at your hut every 10 minutes. When not passing out from malaria, you'll be driving and driving through jungles. It gets tired after about the 10th time you've done that. As for its shooter merits... it's way way off. The guns just don't quite feel right; the people you're shooting at seem obliquely misaligned in your field of view, so you always feel like you're leaning over while you shoot or something... it's just some sort of bad depth perception that is part of the PC version. It's too bad. I had such high hopes for this game. The original Far Cry is 10x better. This doesn't come near Crysis or CoD4... nowhere near. If these games are 9's then this game is a dismal 1 or 2. My wife got it for me for my birthday and I told her that it was the worst game I've ever played. She said to sell it on Ebay and I think I might. And I am really not over-dramatizing this. I can only assume this problem is made worse on ps3 as aiming with the control pad is difficult. But everything else is just really really good. Anyone who doesnt like this game just cant be playing it right, yes you have the same checkpoints that you have to keep attacking but there's many ways to approach just like crysis but with the added ability of using fire. For instance as you approach a check point take a little time to see where people are, if they're all inside the buildings then why not lob a couple of molotov cocktails into the surrounding fields and watch as the enemy is forced out into the open by the incoming fire (make sure the wind is blowing in the right direction of course) then you can take them out with whatever gun you happen to prefer, or with a bit of planning you can place some explosive in a strategic place then use fire to force people into that area then BOOM, detonate via remote. People have said the cars always break down?? I've been playing for a week and the only time i've had a break down is when my motor has been shot to pieces by the enemy. Even then you can just get out and fix the car yourself. There is a problem with online play as the connection keeps dropping but i'm sure this will be sorted out. Otherwise i love playing online, all the game mechanics still apply online. You can set fire to just about anything, drive vehicles and mend them. You can heal your fellow team mates when they've fallen which in itself can be dangerous and exciting as you never know whether its a trap, the enemy sniper could still have his sights aimed on the fallen man waiting to take down anyone who trys to help. For me this game takes all the good elements from games like crysis, far cry, and even GTA and blends them to make a superb gaming experience. Cant understand how anyone can hate this game Expand

Attacking the various checkpoints and, indeed, targets is always a fun bit. Although sometimes the AI seem to have magic eyes and are able to spot you amazingly well (normally rocket dudes too!) it makes sense that they should be able to see at least as well as you. One particularly memorable combat for me was a sneaky-sneaky infiltration into an enemy base. I snuck around dart gunning and knifing my way through enemies that I came across, occasionally launching a grenade at an ammo stockpile to divert attention from my position. By the time I actually reached my objective I had most of the NPCs running around screaming that they wanted to go home! There isn't an enourmous variety of weapons (compared to say, Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 :-P) but rather than pack the game with a million different guns which are all more or less reskins, the developers seem to have attempted to have one or two different styles of weapon for each slot. For example, it's possible to equip sniper weapons to primary or special, or explosive launchers to any slot, which means more or less that although you are restricted to 3 weapons with one from each slot, they don't have to be assault rifle, pistol and rocket launcher as you might expect. One thing that does frustrate me is the total lack of climbing ability. It kind of levels the playing field a bit (otherwise you could just sit on top of a giant mountain and snipe everyone on the map) but it seems a bit strange to say you have an amazing open-world game and then restrict you to only 1 or 2 paths into each area. The sniper weapons are a little samey too, with each one being more or less a one-shot kill, and there are no bullet physics to speak of which makes sniping your way through encampments ridiculously easy. Bullet physics, especially wind, would fit very well into the game as well, since you can watch trees and flames blow in the wind. I'd just like to point out that perhaps the developers of Far Cry 2 saw the title reflecting the paradisic nature of the setting which has been reduced to a war zone - a 'far cry' from the paradise it appears to be. Dumbed down and drab, Far Cry 2 plays like a shallow console port, there's nothing to grip or immerse the player, the whole thing boils down to a bunch of pointless shootouts with some really stupid AI and some driving through bland unremarkable terrain. Half the game's budget must have gone on paying reviewers to lie.

If you're at all creative and you respect a beautifully open ended world, this game is absolutely amazing. The world is beautiful, I almost crapped myself when I found out the original map was not the only place you could go. Guns perform terrificly, and the all of the guns require you to unlock them first, making them ever so satisfying. The game is about survival and accomplishing your goal of killing the Jackal, in one way or another. It's great fun, and if you are a fan of the GTA series you may enjoy this. This really is a new shooter, the best way I can describe it is as a well pulled off first person Mercenaries, with much more realism. Sniper rifles perform as you'd expect, however don't expect too much long range shooting. Assault rifles are great up close, the weapon degradation is never very annoying as long as you maintain your weapons and don't use the rusty stuff the bad guys drop. Everyone complains about Malaria, but you have like 10 pills per bottle, and the attacks occur every 30 minutes to an hour, so you can potentially run 7-10 hours on average before having to do a short delivery mission to get more. People complaining about it are twitch gamers that should honestly stop whining and go back to xbox live. Visually the PC version is brilliant and left my mind boggled, even at DX9. I'm running and HD4870, 4GB of RAM, and 3.0Ghz E8400 and I get a good 30-50 FPS on ultra high, which looks a hell of a lot nice than the Xbox or PS3 version. Even on those versions the world looks very good, except for a dip in FPS. This is a great game, I highly recommend it! It does have DRM, but you get a install back if you uninstall the game! You get 5 installs, and with uninstall it's not a big deal. My only issues with the game: A few main missions are rediculous. I had to defend a barge that was under fire from all directions, while repairing it. I blew up a gunboat, and it landed on top of the boat, the part where I needed to be to repair the damn thing. It let me repair but I was hurting due to fire... If you dont have quicksave like on PC, that would have been ungodly hard to beat. Driving takes a long time. I wish they would have had some ambient radio like in GTA to keep you occupied. Checkpoints are annoying, but you eventually learn how to buzz past them or around them. Great game overall! Expand

I'll mention those right off the bat: (1) the lack of civilians and (2) the lack of skirmishes between the UFLL and APR throughout the countryside. Honestly, including these 2 aspects would make the game feel complete, even if the story or reputation system were not fully fleshed out. Readers, please think about these points. If FC2 included NPCs that did not attack you upon sight, such as the bus/taxi drivers (where did that guy at the beginning go? did he book for another country right after dropping you off in Pala?), the world would feel much more multi-dimensional. Instead, after hours of gameplay, the fact that EVERYONE (ok, just about everyone) attacks you becomes rather...goofy. Also, where the hell are the battles between the UFLL and APR? Again, it seems like its you vs. Africa and that makes FC2 feel more like any other FPS rather than a living microcosm. Sure, cease fires in the city makes sense, but have these factions just drawn a border across the map that they all abide by? I would love if an NPC pointed its firearm at someone besides me! So why the 8/10? Partially because the graphics, although not as realistic per say as Crysis, just work. The motion blur, fire, exaggerated explosions, and model animations are top notch. But mainly, regardless of the 2 above mentioned downfalls, weak MAIN story, and repetitiveness, the gameplay is THE BEST AMONG ANY FPS. FC2 plays like an improved COD4. Shooting weapons feels amazingly visceral, bullet penetrations is incredible, fire prorogation is actually very tactical, and, all in all, the games just immerses you in the game world. Expand

Now if you want to show Crytek that you can make a better game, you should at least adopt the good things Crysis did, and get a decent story (Crysis has great technological achievements, but the game sucked). I've played it for 12 hours already. Silenced weapons don't matter, the AI will know after the 2nd shot EXACTLY where you're at. Expand

For the first little while I felt like I was being drawn into the story - but I was quickly bored with having to drive around, and around and around. I can't use the monocle to see without pulling out the map? Weird. When I approach a checkpoint, why do people automatically start shooting? Why can't I just pass a check point with a bribe or something and be on my way. Overall, I'm not in love with this game. I'm willing to admit that my expectations were out of line with the reality of this game. I'm willing to slug it further to see if I start to like it for what it is - but at this moment, I'm disappointed. I'm giving it a score of 5 on the hope that it will grow on me. Expand

FC2 gameplay sucks. This is a technical showcase, perhaps a demonstration of games to come. But this game don't play. BORING AI, gunfights that don't make sense, point a belt fed at a characters chest and have him come at you, venture off the linear story map and get malaria and die. I would have much preferred a FC 1 Mod, waste of $50.00, I wish I had read the reviews first.

AI: Likes to get shot while driving cars, will relentlessly follow you until they are dead. Will show blood and then a few seconds later like a bad Uwe Bowl movie will react to being shot. This is quite comical as they will pick a random direction to jump backwards into to die and ultimately looks like bad acting. Story: Your in Africa and everyone wants to shoot you. You meet people who like making you drive endlessly for ridiculously long periods of time, eventually you get sick of barking like a dog for them and you WILL kill them. A new guy will then replace the last guy you killed who will suffer the same fate. You rescue people throughout the game and are rewarded by them by extending your missions and having you drive even further, they too die but only occasionally do you get to be the one to pull the trigger. In the console ports you are given special abilities, in this game you are given malaria... This is annoying as you need medication throughout the game, to get this you have to drive to town to pick up passports then you have to drive an average of 20 minutes to another location to pick up 1 - 2 pill. This is not remotely fun. Physics: My god bad, a two car collision on a Q6600 6gb DDR2 800, Geforce 8800GTS 640 will reduce the frame rate to 0.1fps from 60. This is unforgivable. Graphics: Very good, things look very realistic. Are however quite dull and lack color and variety. Environment: Rivers are lifeless, forests are lifeless but ironically the deserts have both zebras and ox. There are occasionally insects. Weapons: Good variety, ultimate I hate all of them. You have to constantly replace guns as they frequently. Accuracy sucks on all of them, machine guns are honestly less effective then the pistols and constantly want to fire in the air and will not let you counteract that movement. To get weapons that will jam slightly less often you have to complete extra missions to unlock weapons you can buy. There are very few weapon locations and they are very far away from any mission. Transportation: This absolutely ruins this game, nothing about it is even remotely fun. You drive around and get shot at frequently which forces you to get out of the car and fix your vehicle while being shot at. If you accidentally get to the edge of the map your car will be taken from you and you will be forced to walk potentially kilometers to the nearest road. Missions will force you to go to the far edges of the map EVERY time and then return to the center EVERY time. We get it, it's big. Gliders will result in your death, do not use these. Larger boats WILL get suck and you WILL have to swim far, avoid these also. They have 5 bus terminals in each map strategically placed as far away from any mission as possible still, they can save time. Conclusion: This entire game felt like work, I just hate it. Do not buy this game, do not endorse this crap. Expand

Unfortunately it's one of those games that suffers in other areas enough to drag it down. Perhaps patching can rescue it, or an expansion or the next installment.

    It's problems:
    - Enemies can take a hail of bullets, even from high caliber weapons, before going down.
    - AI can be great and interesting at times and just down right stupid a lot of the other times
    - The constant re-spawning of check points that makes moving across the map tedious at best.
    - The story does nothing to engage the player, no connection, I feel no desire at all to finish the game.
    - The only real goal in the game is to get the weapons you want. Once you have em and have played with them the game doesn't really offer much else.
    - Rather simplistic weapon controls

    Stuff it did well:
    - Beautiful open world, amazingly well designed
    - Great graphics and engine that runs very smooth
    - Neat AI actions like rescuing a buddy or crawling to cover when injured
    - Good variety of different weapons that fit the environment
    -Great explosions! :D
