I actually feel sorry for those that have spent hundreds on pre-release backing the game only to be let down come release on a scale that is astronomical.

If you are considering buying this I STRONGLY suggest you don't for at least another year. Remember right now you are only buying a premium BETA, the game is so far from being finished it is more likely to never actually get finished as it runs out of funding. We will know this when the game is on a silly low offer of £15-£20 to try and bring more funding in, sign the game is doomed.

Sandbox OK, yet this game has no sense of direction at all right now just a grind of Bulletin Board contracts. A lot of the contracts are still widely buggy and you are unable to complete them. You will soon become frustrated with looking for unidentified sources only to warp in and out of them looking for the needed parts of your contracts. The only ones I have found to be flawless so far are Cargo Contracts, so if you just want to be hauling items from place to place then this is the game for you. BORING!!

Looks nice not really, even the loading screen looks like it is 8bit. Don't believe me? Google search Elite Dangerous Loading Screen and look at the images, you will soon see what I mean. Yet in the game Stations are different and do look very nice. Once you have Docked and Launched you have seen it all, repeated sequence/scene over and over. If you like to just see big suns and little white dots then go for it because that is all this is right now. Don't go off the screenshots those are the few nice things you see for about 30 seconds in total of 2 hours game play.

Sounds are great though and I am a fan of the in game comms, they have filtered it to make you sound like you are in space though this IMO does need tweaking as even in the main menu there is far to much interference so just reverted back to my usual comm method.

Controls are nice and seem to be about the only thing right now that is good in the game, you need to use the whole keyboard but there is no need to panic it is a slow paced game leaving you plenty of opportunity to set yourself right. After a few hours play you will find you have worn the 'J' key out since you are constantly warping from place to place just to see the same thing over and over.

MMO, 9 hours of play and can't recall seeing another player. Instead of focusing on such a huge world more focus was needed on the actual playing experience of this game a smaller Universe could have been expanded at a later date, where as now it is just a Universe of NOTHING. Lets be realistic here though 400 Billion Star Galaxy with a player population of maybe a few 10's of thousands, your going to find it hard to find anyone unless your playing with friends in which even then NPCs is about all you will see.

You will find all your goals are is to grind for credits chasing the next Big ship you can afford and the price gaps are HUGE.

The game has such potential but I can't ever seeing this being released. Maybe come 2020 in release v8.0095. Which will be to late as Star Citizen will have released and this will be forgotten since they have another 12 months till release and have the time to analysis this game and make sure there's is right. Though the Russians millionaires seem to have that sealed up already a little like EVE due to it's over excessive ship prices.

So for now it is back to EVE which I am not a Elite player of maybe only 100 hours of actual game play in BUT at least you have a direction to head in. For the price of this its almost 6 months of EVE. I suggest going to play that for 6 months and come back and see what's happened to this then.

If we are all honest all we really wanted was a first person version of EVE, the baseline was already made. So ask yourselves this, How did they get it so WRONG???

It's truly beautiful, and I can't believe they put that much work into building our galaxy, but I can't see it. I'm an adult now, I work, so I can play maybe 2-3 hours a week. As such, I just can't grind away flying back and forth trying to upgrade this little POS Sidewinder. How do I have a universe of possibility with a ship that can't haul, can't fight, can't jump? At least the original Elite gave you a Cobra which could do all of that relatively well from the start. This is just eye-gouging grinding because it's so flat. The stations, planets, and ships look phenomenal but one you land, you can't even get out of the seat. All trade is through a clunky hologram interface and it's not even hyperlinked well enough to click this and it takes you to nav page that style. No journal, so I have to write things down on paper, like where to find black markets or certain items, and the fetch quests are so bland... just text find this or take that, but without a journal I can't even cross reference where the last place I saw X commodity was (ulness I wrote it down physically). And trans-galactic flight planning? I can't type a location and say "plot route" unless it's within my fuel distance because they can't add "refuel here" waypoints, yet my simple $70 flight planning software I use for flying real planes can do it just fine. I have a hyper-space capable ship, but the computer can't add refuel waypoints? WTF? And how is it that we can jump ships FTL, but can't get market updates or at least general "this system trades these things" data without going there and seeing it after we land? Too much realism in one area, not enough in the other. I want to talk to an NPC!!! Expand

If you like movies with grand Space Opera graphics, you'll love Elite:Dangerous. The game is unquestionably a tour-de-force created by a development team with an obvious passion for the scope available in simulating the entire Galaxy.

The context is you're a space Commander, starting out in a modern spaceship of limited performance, travelling between stations in star systems with a variety of ways to make money and trade your way up through a series of more powerful, better equipped, larger vessels.

One of the strengths of the game is that, given the basic mechanics (you have a ship with a certain cargo capacity and weapons loadout), there are a variety of play styles that allow you to be successful. You can enter a station, buy cargo at a price that looks cheap, transport it to another station that buys it at a higher price, and pocket the profits. What you spend the money on is up to you, but if you like that playing style you can use it to buy bigger, fancier transport, and accumulate weapons that would make any attack on your business an unwise proposition.

Or you can forget the cargo hauling and just go straight for the career path of being the biggest badass killer fighter pilot in the Galaxy. You'll be rewarded with bounties for killing 'wanted' players (predominantly NPC's) and accumulate that money to trick out your ship to be even more Dangerous.

Trading and combat are probably the most popular playing styles, but if interested you can try and make money by 'mining' (you collect the raw materials yourself from space/asteroids and sell it in suitable stations) or 'smuggling' (have a penchant for 'illegal' goods and use various stealth methods to sneak into suitable stations to sell it, avoiding nosy Fed cops as you do so).

Although untimately simple to play, E:D is a large, complex simulation and through the alpha/beta/gamma pre-production the developers have iteratively tuned the model to support an effective balance between profitable trading versus combat. I think it's fair to say the various playing styles coexist reasonably well, i.e. if you're a trader you can expect to get on with your business without too much interference, and combateers can enjoy a good scrap without feeling like every engagement is suicidal. There are a *lot* of NPC's (ships flown by the game AI) so combat pilots have plenty to shoot at, and the designation of large areas of the Galaxy as e.g. 'Federation' or 'Alliance' space means that bad behaviour in that space, such as killing pilots that are not 'wanted' status carries an unattractive penalty.

On the down side, Elite:Dangerous is a lot to take in for the first few minutes you play the game. Like WTF do all these graphics on my spaceship dashboard mean? How the hell am I supposed to fly this spaceship through that entry aperture in the space station? What am I supposed to do once I'm in there? You will find your spaceship shredded to pieces by the station defence lasers when you try and 'dock' without having requested permission first. But, when you start out there really is no downside to having your spaceship blown up, you respawn with a new one, and there are 10 simple tutorial mini-tasks that get you up-and-running and have a good start to your career. After that the Galaxy is yours for the taking.

So the game's not perfect, but I graded it a ten because after hours in the E:D universe it becomes increasingly clear just how much visionary brilliance has gone into the crafting of the game. It's not just another FPS. And the Space Opera graphics are awesome.

This review was written after playing the pre-release versions of the game, up to and including the production 1.0.0.0 version of the game released today.

Elite: Dangerous is in every way the game that I remember... and that is not as positive a thing to say as it might be for some others. Elite was groundbreaking in it's day, featuring some of the most memorable sandbox elements that have shaped nearly every space game to come after it.

Almost every game in the genre features some combination of exploration, bounty hunting, piracy, trading and mining.

Sadly, this game FAILS to deliver and innovate in a number of very serious ways.

What is really irksome, is all the elements are here, trading, fighting, exploring, mining. You can do it all. But Frontier FAILS in almost every area of good game design in frustrating and often face-palming ways.

The Sandbox is absolutely VAST, 400 billion star systems with countless locations to visit. Never in your lifetime could you hope to visit a fraction of them. Ambitious is an understatement for the scope of this game.

Yet somehow, despite the sandbox being the biggest EVER, the depth of that sand is less than an inch deep... Just when you think you have scratched the surface in a chosen area of game play, you quickly realize that you have seen everything the game has to offer in that area.

Try any profession and you will discover that within an hour or two, you will have done everything that profession has to offer, and the only incentive to keep playing it is the carrot on a stick mechanic of upgrading your ship to do it a little bit better till you can buy a new ship... but the gameplay doesn't improve or get more interesting. Fight one dogfight against an NPC and you have fought them all. Explore one star system and you have explored them all, with the occasional exception of rare spatial anomalies like black holes... but again, see it once, you have seen them all. Trading, mining... all the same, everywhere you go. Only the names and positions on the map change.

To counteract this sameness, Frontier wisely tried to inject randomized events and situations to take part in, everywhere you fly are little undiscoevered signal sources and similar random events waiting to be explored. However, once again, there is a lack of depth and variation... Drop out of warp on one, and it's pretty much only going to be one of 4 things. A trader/caravan, a police ship, a wanted pirate, a random assortment of loot and wrecks.

Nothing about these events changes, nor are they really interesting... IT's not like you drop in on a fight between traders and pirates, or get a distress signal asking you for power converters or anything that might add depth... It's just another RESOURCE Node for you to exploit, or be exploited by if your ship isn't up to snuff.

Then there are the graphics - What is at first a great looking game, quickly becomes bland and boring as you realize there is no variation. All gas giants look the same, all asteroids look the same, all stations look the same, the minor variations you find in the graphics only keep it interesting for so long. In addition, you never really get a good look at your ship, making all those pain jobs and decals you can buy with real money pointless, as they only show up on certain fitting screens, and for other players who may or may not even notice them as you will only be visible on their screen for fleeting moments as a small blob of pixels unless you are right up next to them.

The one saving grace I felt early on was that this was like guild wars, in that it was a free MMO and I eagerly tried to talk friends into trying it. I know that being able to explore and do things as part of a team will be more fun and profitable. But I quickly learned that despite being touted as some kind of MMO, it's really nothing like one... You can't really group up, not in any meaningful way, even with group play you find you can't share bounties, trade money or loot, you don't even end up in the same instances all the time.

I am aware that his is coming as a free expansion in the coming months... but I'm afraid that will be too little too late.

Probably the biggest cue that this game is flawed is that after playing it for a week, all I want to do is resubscribe to EVE online. A game that might lack the flight sim characteristics, but does everything Elite does BETTER except maybe exploration and scale (And EVE is huge, and there are things to explore).

the best thing to come out of it was I discovered Voice Attack and ASTRA (an user made add on) that lets me control the game with my voice.

Bottom line, this game was great in the 80s, and if this exact game came out in 2001-2005, I think it would have been a hit. But today, in 2015, this game is terrible dated, and IMHO really only appeals to the games old cult following.

If you are one of those people who still load up the classic elite and think it's fun, you will LOVE elite: Dangerous.

But if you are like the rest of us who moved on and live in 2015... This game is terribly outdated and stale.

    Just remember the following:

You are buying a game which won't require a monthly subscription
You are buying a game which is constantly being developed and expanded
You are required to have an internet connection while you play.

Ok? Got that? Then prepare for the most delicious space simulation game imaginable right now.

The physics are a blend of real, imagined and reconstructed to make interstellar distances traversable in short times but with meaningful distances and mechanisms. To allow for a dogfight feel, turning sideways is a lot slower than rolling and climbing or dropping to your target.

You can turn off 'Flight Assist' which makes the flight model far more realistic, but personally that's a truly tricky experience. Perhaps I will master it later on, but for now, the assisted manouvering is just dandy.

Trade is fun, slightly unpredictable but again relies on a variety of economy types and combinations.

Fighting is more fun! Dogfights in space have never been done so well. If you have a great graphics card you will not have seen prettier.

The only thing lacking in my opinion is the instruction manual which pretty much gives you the basics and leaves you to learn the rest.

Forearmed with the above caveats though, I think this is an excellent purchase and well worth supporting.

A lot of negative reviews are based on very specific requirements that weren't met. To give this game less than 5 out of 10 though is lunacy...

I have spent more than 150 dollars as an Elite backer after hearing phrases like MMO, breathing universe from David Braben the mounth of the horse so to say.

They really have some talented software engineers and I admire the scientific accuracy of the known galaxy. However they are still living in the 1980 in terms of what constitues for them to be enjoyable gameplay. Its a tech demo that would have been enough for the simple minded folks in 1980 but nowdays it is not fun. It is missing the human element!

You will have to do repetitive space trucking, mining, or bounty hunting with only predictable boring lame ass AI around. These mechanics weren't terrible if it was actually a living universe where you meet other players too who bring in the more complex and fun interactions.

Forget it, their net code has been always terrible and it is still a shock how they can release it that way. They use cheap ass not working peer to peer networking. However even if net code worked and they used dedicated servers as any MMO would do the gameplay is still killed by the on demand switch to solo player mode.

-You cannot pirate players since they just switch to solo, so you are left with lame ass repetitive AI.
-You cannot bounty hunt players since they just switch to solo, so you are left with lame ass repetitive AI.
-Mining is like watching paint dry, since you guessed it you just do it in solo.
-You can go out to explore and your chance of meeting another player goes down from 0.0001% in known space to 0.000000000000000000000000001% or in lay terms 0. Oh irrational enough you will still be intercepted by lame ass AI even in the most desolate avoided far away piece of space though. Breaking immersion if you had any to begin with.
    etc.

There is no risk vs reward in the system not counting lame ass AI.

And dont fall for the 500 gazillion systems marketing ploy. Procedural generation is nice to have and a good piece of tech, but it kills gameplay, it does not equal fun content. Every station, system is just the same after a while, no point in travelling anywhere after you have seen a few of them.

I wanted to like the game, but the fact I did not touch it for weeks now tells everything. There is a hard core fan base for it as far as I can see from the insane 10 points. Simple folks will like repetitive no content simple things as it seems.

Although I tailor my responses based on the hiring company profile, the truth is not far from what Elite: Dangerous is. A sandbox space game with no linearity that allows me to "role play" from one end of the galaxy to another. It's like a 4X strategy game set in the cockpit of your space ship and with no support for more than one unit.

It's a flight simulator that hates spread sheets but makes good use of them. It's ruthless, unforgiving and, although huge, extremely claustrophobic. You can play with others players and meet commanders yet it gives out a really lonely vibe. You are out there, alone, trying to make ends-meat in the cockpit of a metal Goliath that may or may not be destroyed the next time it drops out of super cruise/hyperspace.

It's an infant, born with a huge legacy (the 84 version) that has to meet really high expectations. It has much to prove but it's off to a good start. It really is something special... something elite!

In a future with trillions of humans, in a galaxy constructed of billions of stars, among millions of star ships, in a populated space spanning thousands of stars, you are one insignificant pilot. You are expected to learn the rules to survival, prosper, gain the coveted rank of Elite, or die trying. You can be replaced! :)

The game is played exclusively (at the moment) from the first person view of a pilot. You manage every aspect of your ship from your command console. Communications, docking requests, systems management, cargo scoops, landing gear, navigation, and everything else that goes into piloting a star ship.

The game is not subscription based, so after the initial investment, you have all the time you need to learn the game and find the method of play that suits you. Elite: Dangerous has multiple game play expansions planned so the game is still in constant development. It released midway through December and the first big update was released the second week of February. The small team at Frontier Development allows a very fast development cycle, so a steady stream of updates is something to look forward to.

Graphics is beautiful and the sounds are on hollywood level in quality. Hearing the ships engines roar and whine is awesome. This is THE best first person spaceship sim and it will get better with the coming expansions "Wings" (more coop features) and planet landing. So happy that the release is today, and i cant wait to see the coming expanions packed with features. PS. People saying the game is bugged have only played the beta version (called gamma), and so they have no idea how the release version is regarding any bugs. So take it with a grain of salt. Also, any bugs are obviously going to be squashed. Nothing to fear and the core game works great. Im having a blast with my friends in the pre-release "beta" version.

Elite: Dangerous is not for everyone. It requires the player to invest time and effort to achieve even a basic level of game play. Then it gets even more challenging.

If you lack patience or imagination, if you want instant gratification, or if you expect to be a game god dominating everything and everyone around you within an hour, do not buy this game. You'll be disappointed.

Elite: Dangerous is HARD; at least until you understand the many facets of game play. There are hundreds of factors that can kill you and there is a steep learning curve to the game. It does not hold your hand and explain every little thing as you go. Just taking off and landing safely are a challenge. The game is unforgiving. Mistakes, even small ones, can kill you. The game is real time. There is no pause, there is no save, the game goes on no matter what you do.

Elite: Dangerous is immersive. The visuals and sound are like a hot bath you plunge into. Weapon and engine noises differ with each ship model. You can modify your ships with more powerful engines, weapons, armor, shields and equipment. I play the game in 1080 resolution with 7.1 surround sound headphones and it is awe inspiring at times.

The Elite: Dangerous galaxy is the same galaxy we live in today. There are 400 billion stars and 99.99% can be explored or visited. It is a monstrously huge game map and only 0.02% of the galaxy has been explored so far.

The comments that this is a simple space trucker sim are from people who rage quit when they were not perfect in the first half hour. As I said, it takes time and mental discipline to get the flight mechanics under control. Once you "get it" you can pivot in space and fire behind you without losing forward momentum. Or if you prefer, Newtonian flight mechanics.

In a traditional flight game, you set pitch, yaw, roll and throttle and away you go. Elite: Dangerous has several dozen settings you can set just for piloting your craft. Many of them are OFF by default, but as you grow more confident and daring you'll find those settings add a depth and sophistication all their own. You can use a mouse and keyboard, but a joystick or HOTAS rig will see you in good stead.

You can choose to be a pirate, bounty hunter, miner, explorer, trader or switch from one career to the other constantly. Many players have several ships they can switch too.

When you start you will have the option to do tutorial missions. DO THEM. Make your mistakes there and learn how to fly and fight. You may spend several hours in the sims adjusting controls, trying different throttle settings and getting comfortable. This is time well spent. Many give up on the tutorials because they are hard and go into the game unprepared. Skip the tutorials and I guarantee you'll regret it.

Elite: Dangerous is a game of power management. When in game you only have a certain amount of power in your ship. You need to manage your shields, weapons and engine power. In game this is the SYS - ENG - WEP. Adding power to one takes it away from the others. Learn the implications of this in a safe environment. Run out of fuel and you will die.

Heat is your enemy and allows you to be tracked. Weapons fire, silent running and flying too close to some planetary bodies make your ship hot. You need to know what to do because extreme heat will damage your ship hull and internal components. If your hull falls to 0% you will die.

There are three game modes. All of them require a constant Internet connection be active:

Open - This is where many people start. You can interact with thousands of other Commanders (CMDR's). It is a dangerous place with CMDR's who will shoot you up just to watch you burn. Open is for people who know what they are doing and can either defend themselves of know how to run. Both PC's and NPC's can be found in Open. Both will try to kill you or take your cargo. PC CMDR's can be identified by hollow rectangles. Green are friends, yellow are unknown and red are hostile. Remember, just because someone is green does not mean you are safe.

Solo - This is the same as Open, but you are the only PC. You can learn game mechanics here without the danger of players shooting you up. Be warned, NPC's will still interdict and try to engage you.

Private Groups - This is for several players to either game privately or with like minded players. Not ready for Open? Then join a private group where you can learn the game in (relative) safety. Form your own group for you and your friends, or join an established one.

The largest private group is Mobius with over 8,100 players (as I write this) and more joining daily.

As for the "shallow" reviews, Elite Dangerous is as deep as your own imagination. The game is a backdrop and YOU make things happen. Imaginative players will love this game.

I'll see you in the big black CMDR.

However, I am not so much a fanboy that I cannot see that Elite: Dangerous is not feature complete at launch. There are some real balance issues as well as missing or poorly implemented features. All of the issues this game has comes up to a single point deducted in my mind, because the core of the game is getting into a space ship, setting a destination and a purpose for yourself, and flying into the unknown. On that score this game delivers!
The beauty of this game is in the universe in which it is played, namely the Milky Way Galaxy, in its 400 billion stars entirety. You begin the game in a small ship, with an anemic fuel tank and jump range. You are equipped with a pair of nearly-harmless lasers and a power distributor prone to overheating. With this ship, the "Sidewinder", you can perform missions or haul a few goods from one system to another until you have a few tens of thousands of credits and can begin looking at your upgrade options. Do you want to be a bounty hunter? lasers, shields, and power distributed. Trader? Frame shift drive and cargo expansion. Explorer? Frame shift drive and a Fuel scoop. How you play is up to you, but some paths are easier to walk than others.
As you progress, you will earn money to upgrade components, then purchase a new ship and start the process again. As the ships get bigger, the best comments get more and more expensive. A ship that costs 300,000 could easily cost closer to 3,000,000 when properly upgraded for a specific role. Realizing that, it is generally better to forget about what a higher tier of equipment or ship will cost and enjoy the game as you're playing. One day you will be cashing in a dozen bounty vouchers or delivering 50 tons of iridium and realize that you have enough for a new frame shift drive and, lucky days!, the station has one!

Elite: Dangerous is the type of game that is most rewarding when spread out over a long time. Players that treat it as an MMO with levels to grind out will find that they can earn millions of credits in a weekend, but then it feels hollow and dull afterwards. Players that find something they enjoy doing will earn credits slower, but aren't likely to get bored of it. They are also more likely to encounter the evolving storyline, the gameplay that expands from faction reputation, and the hidden wonders that exist in the Elite: Dangerous universe.

It should be stated that this game may not be for everyone. You will not own space stations, you will not craft better components, and it can be incredibly unforgiving. Your 150,000,000 Anaconda battleship may lose to a well equipped and well piloted 150,000 Viper. You may find that your chosen profession cannot earn the credits needed to upgrade without either a serious time investment or branching out into other professions you enjoy less. Those who savor PvP may be sorely disappointed that players can jump between an Open play environment and a closed off "solo, but still online" environment that places them beyond anyone's reach.

Elite: Dangerous requires patience. First, patience with the developers as they iron out wrinkles and finish some features prior to the first DLC. Beyond that, patience in the game as it will not hold your hand or give you quick rewards at even intervals along your path of progression. Space is a cold, dark place where death comes suddenly and unexpectedly and with nasty consequences. (The unwritten law is "don't fly what you can't afford", because if you do not have the credits to pay the replacement cost of ~2% of your total ship value, you walk away without the ship or the credits. 2% of 3,000,000 can leave an unsuspecting player in tears.)

If you can handle the dangers, and you are patient enough that earning better ships and equipment doesn't feel like a chore, then Elite: Dangerous is a universe you can reside in for years to come. As for me, I'll see you in space, Commanders!

I really wish this game was successful, I really wish Frontier didn't run out of money and rush this out the door - instead what we have is a shallow instanced online only mess that has no multiplayer features.

Let me just be clear here: This is an online only game that you CANNOT play with your friends. Everything is instanced and there is NO way to easily switch instances. You CANNOT reliably play with friends. There is no grouping mechanic. No group missions etc...but the game is online only!

I can almost get past that massive blunder if not for the fact that the game play is unbelievably shallow. There is no grand plot. That's fine - but there isn't much of anything else to do. The entirety of what the game has to offer can be experienced in one sitting. I'm serious. In less than 6 hours you can do all there is to do in ED. Never mind that half the things that you CAN do in ED are not worth doing at all. Combat is horrid as all ships handle like the fat space trucks that they are and bounty rewards are too meager to justify the effort. In fact - bounty hunting rewards are so low that if you die once in 20 bounties, you will lose money. Exploration is also completely meaningless and pays very very poorly.

In short, right now, there are only two things to do in ED, fly from station to station hauling cargo or mine rocks. Both of these things are pure tedium. There is no reason to do them except to get the bigger ship that will let you haul/mine more. That's it. There is nothing more.

It looks alright on a low end system and breath taking on a high end one. Sound fits the game profile well, weapons, engines and the universe sound as you'd expect a space sim to, all down to the cool computer voice and hyper drive explosions. Gameplay for Elite veterans or space sim/flight sim enthusiasts is easier but expect a steep learning curve in a game that rewards for practicing and putting time into. This isn't an Eve Online type game so don't expect an MMO with stats and numbers this is pure skill based flight game, there is some grinding but you won't be grinding 10,000 bore you'll be flying to space stations in different systems trading, mining and fighting.

This game isn't for everyone so check your a fan on this before buying! Give it a year and this already solid foundation will be with the best games ever!

It's recommended you run through the training missions first prior to online play otherwise your going to find it hard to start and probably get frustrated.

I'm a fan of the original Elite from the 80s, love this re imagination of it and backed it on Kickstarter to get it going. Graphics are fantastic, flying is great, dog fighting is better, it's got the same old flavor, if they keep improving it over the next few months then it will be even better.

We have two flight modes, effectively one for combat, one for exploration. The exploration mode (supercruise) is a tricky balance of tedium (is a 1000 Ls trip long enough to put the kettle on, or check the forum), beauty, and interest (interdictions once an hour seem sensible, and evaded 50%. I mostly enjoy the exploration aspect too, locating nearby stars using parallax. Close quarters flight does take more learning, but is quite satisfying once you get the hand of it.

Personally I've not experienced any major stability issues since the early beta phase, and there has been an impressive rate of patch releases over the past month.

Although the game offers a variety of different play styles, at the moment with only a single live character per account, it is not too easy to experiment - particularly once you've spent a week or two building up credits and reputation only a catastrophic failure is going to act as an incentive to experiment. Similarly, the random quest locations (un-identified signal sources) offer a good risk/reward trade-off for someone with only 100cr to loose - not so much for someone with an insurance premium equivalent to a couple of days playing.

Missions are currently just as shallow as in any other game, but they make for an easier life than trying to work out your own trade routes. The in game economy is still in a bit of a state of flux - why a complex background simulation is useful to players, I'm not sure.

In a game which places such strong emphasis on trading, the approach to market information is bizarre. I have to pay for (almost no) information, then it expires after 24 hours of desk-time. There is no information I can log from the game (except for 3x4k screencaps per station), and loging data is actively discouraged by the EULA. 30 years ago, pen and paper was a reasonable way of keeping track of the markets - almost everyone has moved on by now. Its very disappointing to be denied the opportunity to easily log my flight history and market information. I suspect the background simulation was invented to facilitate obfuscation of this data - and this is a significant drawback if you don't want to play for several hours every day.

Multi-player aspects seem to be the main focus of this game, online only and with player driven in-game politics. I'm not convinced I want to keep track of all this and take part in massive online wars, yet the game design seems to anticipate this being the primary activity (exactly how is yet to be seen).

No doubt there will be improvements in the following months (well, after a break for Christmas), but exactly where this is leading isn't clear.

Comparing it to X3(we will pretend that X-rebirth does not exist) you are not getting player owned stations or NPC's working for you, you don't get to command your own fleet and you don't get to build your own industrial empire.
But as someone who played X3 a lot I can say that managing stations and fleets were pain in the rear, thought the fact that you could own all that goodness was great.

    Now where E:D shines is:
Beautiful graphics, fantastic sound, shared universe,mind-boggling vastness of the gameworld and THE BEST flight/combat mechanics in space sims, great deal of loadouts (do not try to compare it with EVE nothing will ever come close to that (unless procedurally generated)).

Where Elite does not shine is:

Variety of stuff you can do in game fight/haulage/exploration, multi-player there is no EASY way to play with friends (patch 1.2 should address that), P2P architecture of the game lends itself to hacking and exploitation (COH maphack style), there is no off-line mode, If you want the best ship in the game with the most expensive load out mmm... it's like you start playing EVE now and want to pilot a Titan (just joking it wont take so long, lets say Nighthawk).
And for a new players there is not much of a hand holding and tutorials are not great (game dares to think that you know how to use google).

I do not care about playing with friends (I don't have any :() and empire building aspect is not so important for me. I play solo, so I do not meet any hackers (though I am so far away from the popular systems that it wouldn't be an issue even If I played open).

What I care is VR support and oh my this thing is mindblowing. You are in the spaceship you are the pilot. Once you played E:D in VR there is no coming back, every time you will play space sim on a 2d screen you will feel that it is just not the same, something is lacking it is not real any more . So +2 for that.
I hope that SC will have VR suport of the same level (or better), but until SC is out E:D is the best space sim.
Soon we will have more contenders Limit Theory, Eve Valkyrie, Enemy Starfighter, Star Citizen, Darkfield.

PS: If you want to play in VR you need gtx 970 or better (if you have 270X or gtx660 don't bother).

-Game is basically a grind and running back'n'forth between stations and planets

-Pretty game... but a whole lot of pretty EMPTINESS!

-Users are shadow banned frequently from forums and game for minor or ZERO infractions at all. If you don't agree with them, you better keep it to yourself!

-This game is a glorified space flight sim. The "MMO" part comes from the grind and lackluster controls/combat. They literally took the worst aspects of the MMO genre and slapped them on a flight sim to make it an "MMO". The combat could actually be good if the controls weren't so horrid, but since combat is so reliant on being able to control your craft... yeah...

-You'll get hardcore zealots of this game attacking these points, especially the last one, but let's get one thing straight here - they've put hundreds of hours into this game and spent hundreds of dollars on flight sim peripherals, so OF COURSE they're going to defend it with their very lives!!! Yes, competent, engaging, and thrilling combat can be had in this game if you have the hours and the equipment... but do you really want to bother? I sure as Hell don't!

The game needs at least another 6 months in development, but as it's now officially released this is my review. Graphically it's fine, actually quite pretty with a slightly cartoon look to it. The problems come with content, there's nowhere near enough for a game at launch, very little variation in missions, most are carry object A to location B. Destroy ship A at location B or go get object A and bring it back here. Pretty poor. Combat is OK, just OK.

There are a few other things you can do such as exploration which literally means fly somewhere and point you ship at a planet/star whatever for a few seconds then sell the 'information' for a small amount of money. You can randomly attack people and see f they drop anything, this is apparently the piracy part of the game. That's pretty much it. Oh you can 'trade' as well but this is basic to say the least.

Elite Dangerous is very buggy in general lacking enough content to justify been called a released game. After the offline debacle the developers are keen to emphasize the game is an MMO, but it lacks even the most basic elements of MMO play, apart from the 'grind'. Such a shame.

Because, compared to what has been promised and what has been brought on it's release, it's a complete disaster. The game lacks completely of a story. Yes, there is only a bit of what you might understand as a story. Empire holds slaves, all others are basically against slaves. The Emperor is dying. The Federation are basically corporation moguls focused on capitalism - and all others? Well, Anarchists, Hardcore-Liberals or Communists. That's it.

Bounty missions are mostly only against the currently most-highpowered ship, which - because of AI lack - can be taken out with the second smallest ship in the game. Might take up to 20 minutes, but you can take it out. Usually the cash you might get out of it is set between 150.000 CR and 250.000 CR.

I can promise you, the amount of times you spend doing one and the single same shaped mission, over and over again, is what you can call actually a "combat interaction" - because, if you don't do bounty missions and just go on the hunt for "free-roam"-bounties, let me tell you, they aren't worth because they're just a huge waste of time.

The game lacks completely of cooperative gameplay mechanics - even though it has one single cooperative feature at the moment: "Play with friends as private group". That doesn't means you see your friends highlighted somehow, no, but not only that, you oftenly aren't even able to follow them into an "USS", which is basically a separate instance where mobs are usually getting spawned in order to finish a mission. So, yes. Most of the times you might even face Weeding / Funeral Barges - really.

And then, there's exploration. I mean, yes, there are 400 Million Stars. Yay. Even in 12.000 years they'll be not discovered all. But the most annoying thing is, you can explore up to 170.000 LY - and you just notice yourself, once you get back at base, that after 30 (REAL LIFE) days of exploring, that you'll have to bring up 8 hours to actually sell the exploration data, because it doesn't even offers any kind of batched selective / non-selective sales option.

I'll not even start to talk about mining, because, I mean, we made it to the stars and are able to interdict, yet we're not able to interdict / use a tractor beam to gather small shards of minerals clustering out of the asteroid we're treating with our mining beam.

So, what's the only job you'll really earn a lot of credits? Because, this game is totally focused on you getting credits. You'll end up as a trader. Or let's say in a better way: As a space trucker. Yes, you heard right - a space trucker. You'll truck up to 8 hours per day in order to gather up to XXX Millions. And you know what you do this for? Well, let me explain you this routine, you'll face 24/7 in this game:

Get free ship, trade, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump ~...trade, buy new ship, trade, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump ~...trade, buy new ship, trade, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump ~... trade, buy new ship, trade, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump ~... trade... rinse and repeat.

This is what you're going to do.

The only reason I'm giving this game a 2 out of 10, is the fact they've implemented Oculus Rift to it's excellence. But that's it.

Graphics? Excellent. In this day and age Elite´s graphics are superb and the attention to detail even fastidious. Imemrsion is 100% and with Oculus or 4K that goes off the chart. The game is really well optimized to boot and run smoothly. I was a backer of Star Citizen and sold my pledge after seeing the crappy pay to win scam the whole thing is. Awesome space sim! I was waiting for something like this ever since I played Freelancer over a decade ago. I love the experience of vast space and open world, trading between systems, avoiding pirates, hunting pirates, exploring the stars... This is a "make your own adventure" game so if you expect a storyline and cutscenes you will be disapointed.

The game is huge, and it seems that the developer continues to push for more updates! Really good purchase.

-1 for the lack of more advanced tutorials that would send me off to the world (how to bounty hunt, or how to smuggle)
    - 1 for travel that takes a bit too long

This game deserves my 10 out of 10 score. It's slick, beautiful, engrossing, huge, runs well on lower spec machines. It's a galaxy where you can do what you like, within the limitations of your current ship, of course. The best thing about this game, is its future. I'm looking forward to playing this for a long time to come. Highly recommended.

I am not biased as I never played the original and but I backed it though early beta. Its really shaping up to be something very good. Yes there are bits incomplete and a few weird things and stuff but the FD team yield confidence in the game not only in the quality and speed of the updates but also the contact with the community that has been a daily occurrence.

Elite will not hold your hand. It is not a simple game and it will not treat you like an idi@t either. Hard are the beginnings, but once you discover the galaxy out there and the different sandbox options it will be very difficult to go back. For those of you who wont be looking for instant gratification and those who enjoy teh challenge of discovery, Elite is for you.

I'm really happy with the game. All the reasons why have already been posted by positive reviewers before.
What makes me even more happy for using my money on a game that has so much potential, and didnt disappoint at all, are the amazing press reviews collected here.

Only game so far which may fully justify a purchase of Oculus Rift. I have spent hundreds of hours in beta/gamma stages and enjoyed it. This game is already very nice and it will get much better over time.

i thought it was great when i first started playing it. I'm just glad i held off writing something about it for a couple of days.

It is pretty and the sound design/effects are great. On top of that the feel of the ships encapsulates the sense of empathy that you feel as a pilot. They actually feel that they have mass and you do care about your hull. Ship handling feels solid. It

Gameplay is king however and this is where the title falls, not so much down but pretty much flat on it's face.

It's about as dynamic as a siesta. Once when coming out of supercruise, i was switching between the game and candy crush and i saw another ship controlled by a player. Then he disappeared, i still don't know if it was real or a mirage brought on by my brain's insistency to go into standby. Cargo scooping for the nth time made me cry.
The game is solely geared for you to accrew new ships, everything is done for money. There is a big grind to level. It wouldn't be a problem, if it wasn't so boring

The always online thing is mind boggling. If there was any sort of multiplayer element in the game i would understand but there is none that i can see. Perhaps i'm missing something fundamental. Speaking of fundaments, you would think this sort of decision would be taken long before the game is released. It stinks frankly.

I try to use adjectives that others don't for fear of plagiarism but if i was to sum up the game it would be 'the shell looks promising but not nearly enough GAME'

A beige simulator of infinite groundhog day possibilities

This game represents everything wrong with kickstarter projects as it stands.

I was an early backer and I am extremely disappointed with the final product especially after the development team promised us the moon and gave us an asteroid instead (figuratively and literally), though to be fair, I didn't keep up with project updates so perhaps I should not be surprised. I also think it

I also think it would also be very enlightening to see where the positive reviews are coming from geographically, I have a feeling that Europeans (and especially the British) will be more forgiving, same with gamers that remember the original Elite like myself. Which is probably while I'm so sorely disappointed, there was a ton of potential here and it was squandered.

My biggest beef with this game is that offline play was promised, and now it will never happen, which is an indie developer taking the same kind of stance as Ubisoft and EA on always-online DRM. This is not a welcome development. I wish I could vote with my wallet but I already backed them, based on what turns out to be a major lie about offline play. I work in remote areas where there isn't always an internet connection and not being able to play a game that I backed while thinking and being told that it would fit my use case is not acceptable to me at all.

Hopefully Star Citizen will not share the same issues and offer a deeper experience at the same time. As it stands, you can do everything in Elite: Dangerous within a few hours. That wouldn't normally be an issue in and of itself, if gameplay in those few hours is fun, challenging or engaging. This game is none of those things.

In short, I'm disappointed and do not recommend that anyone purchase this game as it stands.

I just couldnt believe all the good reviews so I had to get the game and see it first hand. I am a backer of old in StarCitizen and EVE capsuleer, but have to admit Elite is really engaging me with its subtle, no **** sim philosophy. Already been involved in a good few PvP confrontations and it works wonderfully. Cant wait for the Wings update.

So far this game has been one of the leakest experience I had in recent times in a game launch. Server only had a minor glitch and no major bugs to account for. The game is indeed not finished and much more is to come. But I have to counter the 0 haterboy bs, so 10 it is.

Best game for the year for me for sure. I have even stopped playing PS2 for Elite and now this little gem is my go to game for my PC gaming time. Playing with friends may seem daunting at first but once you get the hang of it it goes with no issues. Been bounty hunting in co op most of the time so far and cant get tired of it. The rest of the game is just awaiting!

Just off of a gaming session with friends and had to come here to give this finally a big fat 9. I was holding on this review to check out the multiplayer aspects. No major issues there to playing with my buddies although I miss some shared reward and grouping options. Those seem to be coming soon so... 9.

I have been doing so many different activities I have lost count already. At the moment I am half way out exploring towards the pleiades nebulae and a cluster of black holes I saw posted in the forums. Some of those have a specular light efefct similar to the movie "Interstellar". This game is just amazing.

One of the most entertaining experiences as space sim go out there atm. Especially when with a 4K monitor or in the Oculus. The "sim like" nature of the game is really detailed and if you enjoy learning relatively complex but rewarding systems this is the game for you.

Euro Spaceship Simulator 2015 - Contrails in space! This is the most vapid entertainment product I have seen since the 1980's. This is labelled an MMO? Oh, please. Way to completely miss the mark.

The game has huge potential, and even so now its amazingly fun to play already. The space combat is very engaging and engrossing and it does not get old, the 1:1 galaxy is just mindboggling and amazing to hop around in.

Not for everyone, this game is the true successor to the Elite of 1984 - brutal, lawless (in places), and massive - a 1:1 scale Milky Way to play in - place to make your mark. This is no MMO with a hand-holding starter-zone, story-on-rails linear progression, no breadcrumbs to find the next zone.

It's you, your (to start with) tiny little Sidewinder with some loaned weapons and 400

It's you, your (to start with) tiny little Sidewinder with some loaned weapons and 400 billion star systems. Much like EVE, the player's actions will help shape the galaxy, there are civil wars, resource wars, rebellions, famine, crime, smuggling, slavery etc going on out there, and you can profit from it, you can influence it or you can make a bundle playing each side off against each other.

I freaking love it. But it's not for everyone - if you like your games spooned in chunks of go-there-do-that then it's not for you.

This game won't be to everyone's taste. It's a vast, gorgeous and harsh game world that Frontier have created, and it's also a canvas onto which we draw our own actions, rather than having very specific carrot-and-stick structure.

It looks amazing, especially through an Oculus Rift, and the moment-to-moment play is great fun. Flying, docking and throwing your ship around an asteroid field feels great. The sound is also amazing, from the rousing score you get when in combat through to the burbles and bleeps that occur when your ship is at a dead stop off a nebula in deep space. Hyperspace alone makes me want to invested

I'd say the meta-game is definitely on the minimal side, with the procedural and RNG aspects poking through at various stages. It can also feel amazing when something unexpected happens, or you have an encounter with other players, even when the outcome is your ship getting blown up. It's very evocative of something like DayZ, where there's a trudging mundanity to things, and suddenly your thrown into something different and unexpected. These contrasts are what make the game so alluring for me.

It remains to be seen where Frontier take this game, and how much richness and dynamism are woven into the galaxy. There are a slew of features that have been left on the cutting room floor, and I sincerely hope they are picked back up and added in. For now, I'm very happy to play this as it is on release day.

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
