Simply a beautiful game. Take your time to earn your ships and your kills. Not a game for those that think 14 hours to get to endgame is too long. A true sandbox space sim that shows what it's rivals have tried to imitate. Been playing since alpha and have watched the polish go on over the last few weeks. And so much more to come. For all those who loved Elite and and similar games, this will be a great game. The open universe to explore in a gorgeousl visual rendition of the classic game. Of course, being a real sandbox, many people might not like this, but others will also find that it both caters to hardcore online players and casual solo gamers

Not giving it a 10 - there are still improtant parts missing, but things ARE getting better! For example, to begin my bounty-hunting, it was common to accidentally hit a security ship in the heat of the chase and become wanted with a fine of about 400 credits... the most recent patch has fixed this, so now I can stay out pew-pewing wanted scum until I need to return to base for repairs and/or reloads.
Those tht are giving this 0, I don't believe have given it enough chance, or more likely, have jumped in and not bothered going looking anywhere online for where other people are talking about it, and so missing out on half the fun... there are 400 billion stars, and hardly near as many players, so it can be hard to find other 'real' people...

Gameplay-wise, the flight mechanics are excellent. Making space combat fun is very challenging in space games since it's empty, but FD managed to nail it. They achieved a good balance between realism and fun.

The other gameplay mechanics are extremely fun and have good depth. Some aspects are still barebones, but the potential is there and with time they will certainly mature to the level of the flight mechanics, outfitting, and combat.

Overall, a great game that will get even better as more content is released.

It's not what they promised: no multiplayer, no freedom. You can't play with other players and, given the dimensions of the galaxy and the absence of things to do, you won't even meet anybody. Just pretty graphics and wild grinding: you make money to buy bigger ships. No challenge. You will find online free to play titles that are far better than this game.

There is no story line so to speak as you are the story and how that story progresses is very much down to you and the other Commanders out there as you journey through a dynamic adventure. No static AI scripted story, events will be driven by real peoples actions which adds to an already rich and satisfying sense of immersion.

With the planned future expansions and continued development there is certainly a lot to come that will keep the game fresh and you coming back for more.

Caution is advised though as is patience as this is not a game to gently take you by the hand and reward failure. But with determination and hard work you may just have what it takes to be Elite.

I paid as a beta backer and regret it completely. The game is nothing it was promised to be. What you have is some great graphics with extremely shallow gameplay and features. The majority of your time will be spent traveling to and from systems, wasting money and time trying to make money. Graphics are choppy, support is nonexistent; submitting tickets is a waste of time.

The devs stayed true to the original formula while completely ignoring several most basic requirements of MMOs established in the last 15 years, such as reliable co-op multiplayer functionally or clans. Besides, NPCs encounter feel random and missions arbitrary and generic. In summary, the devs miserably failed to achieve their goal of create a living breathing universe.

To be clear though, right now this is something of a sandbox - just like the original Elite - where you make your own play. You set your goals, rather than following some kind of plotline (although I do hope some sort of plotlines start to reveal themselves now that Release is here) but it's that kind of game.

This game will not hold your hand, or give you a waypoint, or dictate simple morality to you. It gives you an unstructured toybox to play in, but those without imagination will find an empty void staring back. The foundation is very solid and it can get only better with the promised development after release that will continue to expand the base of the game while also working on major expansions like planetary landings and first person.

The latest fixes during Beta and Gamma have done an excellent job to improve the stability and overall balance of the game. Trading is finally fixed and logical again, combat feels great. No issues with the netcode (for me) and overall an excellent experience. Mind though - this game isn't easy and doesn't hold your hand - your actions have consequences and there is no magic immunity nets. Live fast, die hard!

In addition, Frontier Developments have shown to be a great company, constantly hearing and answering their customers and changing the game to suit people's requests. Many times features or fixes requested in the forums have "magically" appeared in the game showing that the guys at Frontier actually do really care about our opinions - this also corroborated by some of the senior Frontier staff frequently posting and engaging in debates and clarifications with the players.

The sound is the best part of the game it truly is great, the connection issues and funding process are dubious at best (bait and switch). The graphics are decent and there are some beautiful places to see but that isn't why the majority have bought this game.

Customer service is also an issue, taking far too long to respond and the staff can be a tad overzealous in their actions should you dare to post a negative comment on the forums. There seems to be a few who like the power a bit much shall we say and the fanbois truly do rule the forums, but there is a lot of good information there if you do buy the game.

Really good game, really nice graphics, modelled off the original and based off the milky way galaxy, If your a space sim fan then this game is for you.

Super game for what it is at this stage in development.
Dont expect a full game its more like a preaccess/steam greenlight to a alpha/beta, lots of features missing.

For example mining... what a load of twaddle. No mining scanners (so trying to find decent mineral loads suck), huge asteroids that run out of content after a couple of chips are removed (and you cannot tell which roids are empty AND each chip is only a small percentage of an actual sellable unit so if you have 99% of platinum you can't even sell it yet!!!), every time you remove a chip you have to chase it down with your ship and scoop it up and then return to the roid to chip off another - total pain in theass!, AI miners that jump in and start nicking ore from the asteroid that you are mining but if you shoot them YOU ARE FINED!!!!! Come on FFS... I loved mining in Eve Online... This however is total crap. Also the AI miners can suck the chips right into their craft but yours can't... Weird!

The holographic displays are often washed out by the excessive glare... which is why holographic displays will never catch on. Look pretty but are poor replacement for a good LCD.

The galaxy map is another good example of "looks pretty" but is actually frustrating... Stars that you are looking at fade out at the wrong moment so it gets hard to track routes. Also trying to find a station that sells items you want is annoying because it takes so long to load up system displays... also you can't select destinations from an in system display (say WHAT? Did they even think this through). There should be less of a load time than the galaxy view but it is the opposite. I think the 1984 version loaded quicker lol.

For example I wanted to find a station that I could pay the fine for killing the claim stealing miner I killed... After I waited 60 seconds for a system display to pop up ( yeah, I waited 60 seconds and it STILL didn't appear) I said sod it and killed the game.

I loved Elite back when it was released in 1984. This should have been much better but other than the nice graphics it seems less. Maybe once they finish the game it will be worth playing but at the moment it's grind central (and this is from a player that normally loves the grind).

I really should have remembered that I said I would never buy another Braben game after First Encounters.

Highly recommendable for all space sim fans out there:
Pros: Complex controls, in depth ship customization options, ability to pursue your advancements your own way, massive galaxy to explore, death actually holds consequences.
Cons: A few major glitches/game issues at present, training missions don't cover some very important content.

But if you have ever dreamt about going into space, exploring amongst the stars and trading rare commodities in your own space-ship, this is definitely the game for you. If you like space games, flight sims and sandbox games, this game won't disappoint.

Keep in mind that development of this game didn't stop on release. A LOT of features will be added. One of them is improved coop functionality (group missions etc.) which I'm very much looking forward to.

Having played all through the Beta and Gamma Phase and now uo 1.1 i can safely say this is an awesome game, I've already put tons of hours in and i can't see that ending any time soon now its released. For a new player this can be difficult, there is no starter zones and flying takes lots of practice but once you've got the bull by the horns flying is exceptional fun.

So the initial release of a game I've played for over 120 hours during the Alpha and Beta stages (despite promising myself I'd not play too much to avoid burning out) is finally released. So the initial release of a game I've played for over 120 hours during the Alpha and Beta stages (despite promising myself I'd not play too much to avoid burning out) is finally released. I say "initial release", because this is not the end, it's merely then end of the beginning, with Frontier planning on updating and adding new features for years to come.

What 1.0 of Elite: Dangerous gives you is exactly what was promised in the initial Kickstarter. A modern re-imagining of the original Elite game from 1984, but it's also so much more than that and the potential for the future is staggering.

Combat in the game is a wonderfully visceral, strategic affair which requires you to eke out the best performance from your ship's weapons and systems to overcome your foe. This is no simplistic point and shoot affair.

Graphically the game is stunning, and the pure, unadulterated beauty of space in Elite: Dangerous will frequently stop you in your tracks whilse playing. Seeing starlight slipping over the floor of the docking hanger as the station rotates will make your jaw drop. Sunrises seen from the viewpoint of an ice asteroid belt will bring a tear to your eye. And this is before you add in the extra dimension (guffaw) of the Oculus Rift.

On the Sound front the Frontier guys have really hit it out of the park. From the roar of the engine boost, the groans of a ships hull under stress when pulling high G manoeuvres, to the thump of impacts and the ambient noised in stations and outposts, the sound design in the game immerses you in the game like no other I've played. It would be criminal if they didn't win awards for the sound design in this game.

Being a true sandbox, deciding what you want to be in the galaxy is the first step in a long journey (a first step that some people seem to stumble on as they seem to prefer being told what to do in games). Bounty Hunter, Trader, Pirate, Miner, Hired Gun, Smuggler, Explorer, it's up to you. And whatever you choose, you can always switch roles whenever the mood takes you as you're not locked into an artifical skill tree or any nonsense like that.

The one potential downside to the game (for some people at least) is that it will not hold your hand. When you first start playing expect to fail a few times! Expect to crash when trying to dock for the first time! Expect to actually have to practice flying your ship before you can fight effectively! Expect to have to put some of that gray matter to use when learning how to trade effectively!

There is no instant win here, and the game is so much better for it.

In an age where seemingly every game has an enforced 2 hour tutorial before you can even start to play properly, and where every game has been dumbed down to lowest common denominator levels, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Elite: Dangerous to anybody who loves space, space games in general, and who has always secretly wanted to be Han Solo.

Ignore the haters. This is great fun. No game this big has a smooth launch, but this game has been well tested and the bugs are minimal.

If you played Elite, this is Elite. Okay, the learning curve is a little steeper - more controls etc., but stick with it, it pays back in terms of how fun and sophisticated it gets.

If you haven't played Elite, but have wanted to fly among the stars... this is for you too. Think GTA in space in terms of how open the open play is (not in terms of content - no excessive violence, misogyny or bad language here, my ten year old plays it).

If you need to be playing in five minute chunks, and don't want to invest time learning the game... it's not for you. That's fine, I'm not judging, just being honest with you.

The community won't let this game stagnate. For your money, and no ongoing monthly fees, it's bargain of the year.

Don't try to play on keyboard and mouse. At least invest in a gamepad, better yet, a decent joystick. It will increase your enjoyment immensely.

The machine requirements are surprisingly modest, this will play on a two or three year old machine very well. At the other end, if you want a game to show off your 4k rig, this is it. The models are all built for 8k right now. If you have Oculus rift, you should already be playing it.

The enthusiasm and community that has already grown up around the gaming during development is one of the best and most mature i've seen for a game.

If you really want to experience wow though, you have to try it in VR. E:D is by far the most mature VR game I've played so far (I have an Oculus Rift DK2) and the immersion and just straight up 'wow' you get from it is no other entertainment experience I've ever had. I've quite literally had tears in my eyes and feeling of awe on many occasions and even after several months I still relish 'going in' each time. If there was ever a case for the future of VR, E:D makes it conclusively IMO.

That being said, there are still some issues and limitations (player to player comms being the biggest IMO) but judging by the sheer dedication, enthusiasm and skill of the Frontier team, I have little doubt they will continue to push until it's the game we all know it can be.

You can choose your role - be a pirate, trader, bounty hunter or miner, you can cause real change in a living, breathing universe and, best of all, you can relive your childhood as it was meant to be.

(I actually heard this!)

In some ways, I'd compare this to a 'Simcity in space', only you're not building a city, you're building your own personal empire.

You have to have patience and a little luck to make things go your way in the game. Persistence pays off... Most of the time - but that's the key isn't it? Games aren't fun without risk, and there's a LOT of risk here.

This isn't 'Halo'. There's no hint book to get you through tough missions and reveal all the answers. No 'boss' creatures (other than capital ships), and griefers live a short, unhappy life in the game, due to a bounty system that all but assures death to those who fire at will on anything that moves (especially space stations!)

That said, there is combat, even if it's mostly optional. BUT, there is also trading, mining, exploring, and pirating - plus the joy of owning and upgrading your own ships. This may appeal to you. It may not. Frankly, I don't care, but I'm getting back in the game now...

Tickets do not get responded to, or when they do they just tell you to contact someone else. The email address Frontier provides in their Elite newsletter for feedback doesn't even exist. A clickable link to an email address and your email gets returned. The game, for over two days now, has been unplayable for about half the people playing it. The many of the servers are so bugged and failing it is unplayable. Frontier has not commented on this. Has not acknowledged this, and certainly hasn't bothered to try and fix it. They basically released a very buggy game and went on vacation to spend your money. The game itself is awesome. Having to deal with Frontier makes it not worth the time. I'm now battling to get a refund for being sold a defective, unplayable, faulty product.

Whilst there are areas that need a little rebalancing/tweaking (especially where making money is concerned), the foundations laid down by Frontier are very firm and this game can only improve over time with future expansions planned such as planet landings and a first person mode to walk around space stations.

This is a slow burn game, its not instant gratification pew-pew...its a more considered approach to gaming. You build up credits, take on missions, take sides in huge space battles, explore and pretty much do whatever you want. It will take time to get the very best ships and fully upgrade them (literally days, maybe weeks, of played time).

The sheer scale of the game is astonishing...YOU HAVE A GALAXY IN YOUR PC!!! No kidding, when you start to explore a little bit it really hits you just how enormous this game is...there is so much potential in this game its beyond measure. So far Frontier have only exploited a very small section where the humans live but no doubt the Thargoids are out there and maybe other alien races waiting to make an appearance.

Graphically its very pretty, I wouldn't say its the best looking game ever but it is something to behold when you fly through an asteroid field in a nebula. As for the sound...I would not be surprised if this wins awards for sound design...it all sounds absolutely amazing, they have really done a fantastic job there.

There have been complaints its grindy, and it is to a certain extent but I would hope this is balanced out a bit when more ships are added to the game so people have extra attainable goals. The trading system isn't the best and you may need to use external tools or a pen and paper to get the most out of it.

Overall I think this will become a classic, its not for everyone and I don't think it'll appeal to the FPS crowd but if you want the best space sim out there then this is it.

Finally, I would recommend a flight sim joystick/throttle if you can stretch to it as it does add to the experience.

Don´t get me wrong, the game is worth its money, because it is so wonderful in pretenting. It hides it flaws, you just assume stuff is working, because why should it not? But the more play the more you realize that the game is giving you placeholder mechanics everywhere a long the way.

Persistent universe? Yeah, kind of, except everything runs on p2p without validity checks, because the servers having problems to keep up with the data already.

Multiplayer? Yeah, kind of, p2p, works sometimes and sometimes not, player communications is giving you often connection errors and other players not in the mood for pvp interactions simply disable p2p in their router and enjoy a carefree solo experience while officially still playing on the big persistent universe.

Background simulation for the politics, faction standings, system control, etc? Only rudimentary working, but this you might only notice after weeks of playtime into the system.

The game is of this kind of issues and would be considered by most developers an alpha build, but frontier is charging full price. And they seem to ask us for additional money if we want to test the coming new features like "Wings" witch should include the ability to group with other players, something that is not included in the current version of the game. The beta for that should start in march.

I wish this game would have been build with more passion, attention to detail and with a real persistent universe in mind, but in its current state you it kind of broken. Most players will reach soon the point when a fun experience turns sour because of bugs and design decisions.

I have heard there are DLC coming out to rectify some of these issues but they will cost extra ££'s which I was not prepared to wait/pay for. Thankfully I sold this game and got my money back. I shall be much more careful what I spend £40 on in the future!

It's the game we dreamed of from the early 80s brought to life, and it doesn't stop here, the possibilities for it to expand are endless.

The next big step is to give us the ability to get out of the pilots seat and walk around plus land on planets, I can't wait :-).

    1. Elite Dangerous follows the promise of original Elite and the subsequent games Frontier and First Encounters: be a pilot in a large volume of space, get involved in trading, bounty hunts, pirating, mining, smuggling etc.

    2. Of all the similar games currently available, it does all the ones above the best.

    3. Graphics, sounds, art is extremely well done.

    4. The universe is quite realistic. The whole Milky Way galaxy is pseudo-realistically modeled.

    5. The community as well as the development team is very helpful and responsive. I've been playing the game for two weeks as a backer. During the course of last few week the dev team has been continuously updating the game, addressing issues even on Sundays and Saturdays. I have no idea what all the other people who gave low score here in Metacritic on the premise of dismal support are really talking about.

    6. However the game is currently not %100 done. There are many upcoming features such as better multiplayer support, planet landings, more ships etc. The track record of developers has been very good and majority of people in the community have confidence in game's future.

The galaxy is a very big and exciting place, and even though the game can feel barebone in its initial release to some, the game is already a fantastic space opera sandbox experience. At first, I was really skeptical about the always online mode and multiplayer, as Elite is a solo experience at heart. But I quickly changed my mind the first time I rushed through an asteroid field with fellow commanders, pursuing a giant Anaconda ship and fighting to be the first to score the fat juicy bounty. It's so amazing to see human players zipping about the stations, in supercruise, or uniting to overthrow a whole system using trade, missions, vigiliantism and everything imagination allows, I wouldn't have it any other way now.

Elite initial release is still early in development, and is still an open platform than a truely full fledged MMO, but the potential is so huge, it would be a mistake to ignore it and miss the incredible space opera experience.

THE most beautiful space game ever developed with the best sound engineering I've ever heard, period.

An absolute must-buy if you have a Rift, since it's considered the flagship of VR immersion. As for the gameplay, quite a few features are yet to come but there's plenty to do as it is. It's a sandbox game so if you expect the game to hold your hand, you will be disappointed.

Guess again - its just a fake economy like in single player freelancer which changes the item prices, not the player-traders. The list goes on. So why exactly should I play a game devoid of any content (in the traditional sense) and instead play a "sandbox" when I actually don't have any influence on the sand in the box? It's basically an over-hyped flight simulator in space with a cheap economy-simulation shoehorned on. The actual gameplay is repetitive and boring without exception. If you want a real sandbox game in space (that isn't just a huge fake and trying to steal your money with the name "Elite") then give EVE Online a try. Elite offers nothing that EVE doesn't except for the flight simulator aspects (but they are basically just a huge time-sink to try and hide the fact that the game is shallow, has no breathing living world and offers virtually no content).

Really bad game, not worth the money. Play EVE instead - that game actually offers a real sandbox where every action has an influence on the game and not just some cheap excuse like Elite Dangerous.

It’s true that the alpha testers like me after 400+ hour in the game have seen much of the content on offer at launch day, but they are in continuous development, and so I really doubt if a new player joining after launch is going to run out of content anytime soon if at all. The proof is that the vast majority of alpha and beta testers are still piling in the hours to this game, for a simple reason, there really is no other space sim sandbox anywhere near as good as this one.

This really is one of those rare games you could clock up 1000 hours gameplay with, so for £35 it’s an utter barging.

Not to mention the distinct lack of a Thargoid invasion, or anything else going on in the Galaxy apart from a dying emperor and a bit of Federation politics, none of it seams to impact your game play. Not only that you can join both sides at once, which I think is a bit silly for a mmorp. You can't even easily make a tidy profit running good old fashioned narcotics, it's performance enhancers instead now. There is a smuggling mechanic which is fun but ultimately not as profitable as just hauling loads of stuff in a big fat slow ship. Gone to is being able to capture the escape pod of your victims and sell them as slaves. Not only that as of the last release I did not notice my actions having any impact on commodity prices, so the most lucrative thing to do was run back and forth to the same 2 space stations, which was a bit dull. My ship felt like Marvin the Robot, game the size of entire Galaxy and all you make me do is go back and forward between the same 2 car parks.

The game is brutal to the uninitiated, space stations will wipe you out in a heart beat if you don't follow protocol, no fines just near instant death, which is a bit ott. Also don't clip a cop by accident in mad dog fight there's no mercy there either.

Still, it keeps me up at night.

    2. Trade. Knowing the markets helps here, I would recommend running missions from the bulletin board to not only increase rep, but alo get first hand knowledge of the markets. Whilst a lot can be gauged through the Map interface, I found this method to be less likely to cause loss.

    3. Mining. Its pretty bare-bones and they will add more features, right now you equip a mining laser and a refinery, the more expensive ones have more bins, fly to an asteroid belt or extraction site and blow pieces off of it. Only way to know right now is to target each chunk for an analysis. Most in system ones are quite depleted and so could take awhile to refine enough (5 to 20% takes time). Going to unexplored regions to find pristine areas will yield much higher percentages and will be quicker.

    3. Bounty Hunting. Get a warrant scanner, and use it before engaging, yes you'll be jinxing avoiding incoming, but this maximises profit. I have used the Eagle successfully and will even submit to interdictions almost with glee, but know your limitations and how to use your power settings appropriately. Oh and when to run.

    4. Smuggling. Again, like trading knowing your local group will pay dividends. Knowing where to buy goods which are illegal elsewhere and where to drop them off at a black market, not all stations carry them.

    5. The cockpits. You're sitting in a 3D modelled cockpit, only Star Citizen will feature this.

    6. Multiple ship ownership. You can tool up each ship for different roles if you so choose.

Overall, 9 from me, addicted and all I think about is Elite and my next moves as I am trying to increase faction rep with the Empire. although this is by far not the only thing I will want to do...:).

That being said, this is not a space combat sim.
This is Elite, and it requires a special mindest to enjoy. Don't expect constant dogfights, but do expect an impossibly large galaxy to explore, and a very contemplative and incredibly pretty game. And contrary to what I've read in some of the other reviews, there is a lot to do.

The flight model is also very good for dogfights, and close to what you'd expect in more classical flight simes, with a few tweaks allowing for nifty tricks.

I played the original Elite and probably every 4x, space combat sim since so I'm not new to the genre. The environment is beautiful there is no denying that, however its only skin deep. Once you've seen the five or six different types of space station the awe factor fades and your left with a universe that feels dead and nothing to do but look at the scenery. Running cargo missions to obtain a bigger ship to run more missions ect does get old. The combat is about the same with no real point to it. Your stuck in the cockpit with no interaction with anything else in the game, your not ever allowed to see the outside of your ship unless you go to Elites website to see the wonderful screen shots you can not take. As far as multiplayer goes, the decision to include 400,000,000,000 stars made the odds of ever seeing a non NPC player 1 in 8,000,000. assuming 50k players on a single server. Its basically the same game from the 80's with a bit of polish. Consumer's expect far more today than they did back then, a 1985 Cadillac may have been wonderful in its day but in 2015 even with shiny new paint its still woefully outdated.

Elite, although unfinished, is really "moorish" and has me long hours at the helm of my Cobra. The game has been designed as an immense space sim sandbox and will need you to make your own game out of it. You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
