It's a sandbox all right. Do what you want: trade, explore, mine, bounty hunt - it's all the same. I've heard the argument that there's only a grind if you make it a grind - but those people are fooling themselves. There are HUGE money gaps in-between ships so you'll find yourself flying in small ships for hours and hours until you want to fling yourself off of a cliff.

It's not all bad. The flight mechanics are GREAT - ships feel weighty and satisfying to fly. Open-world PVP is always great (just stay near popular systems to find players to fight.) The docking mini-game is fun, but tedious after hundreds of times.

A vast ocean that's inches deep, Elite Dangerous isn't the game for everyone. I'm addicted, but I just space truck. I feel like Frontier rushed this game out to help pay for development. That's not a bad thing, but don't expect a full game just yet.

I just can't recommend this game, despite the hundreds of hours I've already put into it.

"a vast ocean that's one foot deep" describes the game in its current state perfectly. However I'm still giving it 9 because it's Elite and it's David Braben. It's also the best experience I've had in my Oculus Rift DK2 so far.

To the negative reviews complaining about lack of content - there is a lot more content than the original game and at least as much as I recall from Frontier/FFE and it's a lot more stable than either of those.

The game I've been waiting for nearly 30 years. 400 Billion star systems and a full space sandbox to do what you want. Nothing on rails, so don't come expecting to be hand held. Amazing game and it can only get better with planetary landings, big game hunting. The scale of this game is beyond belief.

Every so often I decide to change jobs and work for another company in the industry. When applying for a Game Designer position you always get asked the following question: "If you had one million dollars, what game would you design/build/develop". Although I tailor my responses based on the hiring company profile, the truth is not far from what Elite: Dangerous is. Although I tailor my responses based on the hiring company profile, the truth is not far from what Elite: Dangerous is. A sandbox space game with no linearity that allows me to "role play" from one end of the galaxy to another. It's like a 4X strategy game set in the cockpit of your space ship and with no support for more than one unit.

It's a flight simulator that hates spread sheets but makes good use of them. It's ruthless, unforgiving and, although huge, extremely claustrophobic. You can play with others players and meet commanders yet it gives out a really lonely vibe. You are out there, alone, trying to make ends-meat in the cockpit of a metal Goliath that may or may not be destroyed the next time it drops out of super cruise/hyperspace.

It's an infant, born with a huge legacy (the 84 version) that has to meet really high expectations. It has much to prove but it's off to a good start. It really is something special... something elite!

Always online DRM added, offline removed.
A lot of empty space for an MMO. No MMO tools. Not much content. Repetitive. It's pretty though. I'm disappointed, this game had so much potential. If only the MOD community could have got a hold of it.

No irritating Global chat, no forced congregation zones, but instead a consistent environment within which to play the game your imagination can create, if you like with a small group of friends.
The sound and visuals should win awards. I cannot say more about that.
It looks as if a lot of the promised features, are yet to be released so I look forward to that, but as it is I am having lots of fun with this.

Game is fantastic and only getting better over time, but you might have to have an IQ above 75 to find it enjoyable. If you're a CoDbunny 12 year old with ADHD, this isn't the game for you--but if you can sit down in a game that doesn't hold your hand, stare out into the vast universe, and chart your own course, then you'll have an excellent time.

Has potential, I enjoy the graphics and the great sound design but as many other people write there is a lack of gameplay elements. It feels really empty and it's really hard playing with other friends which forces people mostly to just solo out on their own. I hope with the future expansions the game might live up to its potential, but at the moment it is just an empty shell.

Just got mines from a smuggler into my face, expecting cargo.
    10/10 would explode again.

But honestly: It's THE spacegame i've been waiting on since the X series tanked so badly. I played Elite on my C64 as a kid and now it's back in all it's glory.
And it will not stop where it is. Devs will continue develop content and expand an already vast universe (400bil starsystems yo)

Not for everyone, this game is the true successor to the Elite of 1984 - brutal, lawless (in places), and massive - a 1:1 scale Milky Way to play in - place to make your mark. It's you, your (to start with) tiny little Sidewinder with some loaned weapons and 400 billion star systems. Much like EVE, the player's actions will help shape the galaxy, there are civil wars, resource wars, rebellions, famine, crime, smuggling, slavery etc going on out there, and you can profit from it, you can influence it or you can make a bundle playing each side off against each other.

I freaking love it. But it's not for everyone - if you like your games spooned in chunks of go-there-do-that then it's not for you.

A True Elite game : all the parts of the game are going well together : you need to buy and sell things to get money, you need to explore space to find things to buy/sell, you need to fight when you meet some one wanting your money... Incredibly immersing (rendering and audio !).

The potential here is amazing. Just jumping in to fly around the universe is great fun - be that fighting, trading, exploring or all 3 at once as I tend to dabble with. I would recommend a solid HOTAS, the feeling of flying a spacecraft around with the throttle+stick is what pushes this up from a 7/8 for me.

To be clear though, right now this is something of a sandbox - just like the original Elite - where you make your own play. You set your goals, rather than following some kind of plotline (although I do hope some sort of plotlines start to reveal themselves now that Release is here) but it's that kind of game.

It's not what they promised: no multiplayer, no freedom. You can't play with other players and, given the dimensions of the galaxy and the absence of things to do, you won't even meet anybody. Just pretty graphics and wild grinding: you make money to buy bigger ships. No challenge. You will find online free to play titles that are far better than this game.

this game as it stands is mind bogglingly epic and very much daunting for the newbie. there is no hand holding. this is a game in the vein of the pre 2000 era. this is a difficult but rewarding game . the more you put into it, the more you get out. the potential expansion leaves me hopeful that this will be the stuff of legend in a matter of years

Gameplay is rock solid. The audio is amazing. There combined in such a way that makes the game immersive and fun. Your ship does what you want it to. You can do whatever you want to. Be a pirate? Hunt pirates for there bounty and ill gotten goods? Become a trader? Mine some precious metals and cash in? Can't wait to see what they release for this beast next.

Elite:Dangerous is NOT an arcade game - it is an immersive experience that requires you to bring something to the party. You can choose your role - be a pirate, trader, bounty hunter or miner, you can cause real change in a living, breathing universe and, best of all, you can relive your childhood as it was meant to be.

Not everyone agrees with the game style but Elite:Dangerous has a pedigree to live up to - it isn't EVE, it is Elite and rightly so.

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
