I've played the limited tutorials for 2 weeks now but that is nothing to the full game. The first time I launched out of a space-station I was in awe of the fact that I had 400 billion star systems to explore. It is mind boggling to think of the vastness of this game and even from the very start the options of missions that you can undertake far outstrips any space game I've played before. You could easily spend an hour just looking in detail at everything before you take that first flight outside.

This is a vast game and is not to be taken lightly so if you are after a quick shoot em up in space this is not for you, but if you want to invest time and patience in building a career and forming virtual in game and real alliances with other players of months and years then this will give in bucket loads.
The developers have pushed the game engine to new heights with 16K screen support (I don't even think that's available yet!) and full 3D immersion to try and make this game as future proof as possible, yet still it works on old machines, and even though it needs to be online to keep the universe updated in real time, its possible to play this connected on a laptop using a mobile phone as your internet receiver.
Its that online all the time that has caused a lot of controversy but it is still possible to play a solo game. Your universe will just continue to develop, expand and change in real time as the online community explore, develop new and change existing factions and cause this game to grow. This allows for players to drop in and out, meet and play with new people or even old friends - something which is available in many other games.

The changing dynamics of the universe (which games like Eve have also managed) is something that gives this game that extra over some other MMO's where a lot of what is seen as changing is simply scripted add on by the developer. Not that the developer has finished yet. There are a lot of extra's that are to be released in the future including the ability to get up out of your seat and walk around your ship.

The game play is hard, even for a veteran of the original like myself , but this is meant to be an investment and I can see myself easily spending 100+ hours and only having a few kills to my name.
    Absolutely fantastic!

There is no story line so to speak as you are the story and how that story progresses is very much down to you and the other Commanders out there as you journey through a dynamic adventure. No static AI scripted story, events will be driven by real peoples actions which adds to an already rich and satisfying sense of immersion.

With the planned future expansions and continued development there is certainly a lot to come that will keep the game fresh and you coming back for more.

Caution is advised though as is patience as this is not a game to gently take you by the hand and reward failure. But with determination and hard work you may just have what it takes to be Elite.

Ignore the haters. This is great fun. No game this big has a smooth launch, but this game has been well tested and the bugs are minimal.

If you played Elite, this is Elite. Okay, the learning curve is a little steeper - more controls etc., but stick with it, it pays back in terms of how fun and sophisticated it gets.

If you haven't played Elite, but have wanted to fly among the stars... this is for you too. Think GTA in space in terms of how open the open play is (not in terms of content - no excessive violence, misogyny or bad language here, my ten year old plays it).

If you need to be playing in five minute chunks, and don't want to invest time learning the game... it's not for you. That's fine, I'm not judging, just being honest with you.

The community won't let this game stagnate. For your money, and no ongoing monthly fees, it's bargain of the year.

Don't try to play on keyboard and mouse. At least invest in a gamepad, better yet, a decent joystick. It will increase your enjoyment immensely.

The machine requirements are surprisingly modest, this will play on a two or three year old machine very well. At the other end, if you want a game to show off your 4k rig, this is it. The models are all built for 8k right now. If you have Oculus rift, you should already be playing it.

You can look out the windows, admire a passing ring system with a setting sun and track a pirate as you blow him up.. you are there sat in the seat with your ship around you.

What you need to understand before buying this game is that you're not going to see A LOT of player interaction. There is some, but not a lot. What it does instead is what I love most about the game. It has a persistent universe ( or perhaps I should say galaxy?), where every single player shares the same economy and changes in galaxy-wide politics.

If you only like games with a clear storyline of missions, do not get Elite. If you don't like games that require you to think ahead, do not get Elite. If you only want to play to gank people, Elite doesn't force online play, so you can't do much of that.

There's more fleshing out to come around the sandbox that is in so far, but the basic elements are good, the interactions interesting, and the space flight/fight gameplay is amazing. Also, probably the best sound design in a video game, ever.

If you can be happy as described, grab it and you'll love it. If you want a little more second/third tier sandbox content, maybe wait a couple of months. Just don't get it expecting a typical "go here; do X" MMO because Elite doesn't provide that experience and doesn't want to.

You can play as a trader, bounty hunter, pirate, miner and explorer or a mixture of all of these. The focus is on replicating the feel of piloting your own space ship with 15 currently available and this rising to 30, each with a different feel. The game has already won VR space simulator of the year and even with with pre-consumer DK2 Oculus rift is jaw dropping good. The game still has areas where content is light and requires imagination to fill in the blanks, with more content to come with a ethos of other MMOs that it is never finished. Some reviewers have complained of nothing to do and it does rely on you making the story and not being hand held through it. If you are willing to be creative and enjoy the aspects it does well, you are in for a treat. It is the type of game what you could leave it for a couple of months and them come back to see new features and content that engages you again, The more people that support this the better this game will become and it will grow into something exceptional. The development team have a real passion and if you listen to David Braben you can hear he is in this for the long haul to make his dream space game. I can't wait to see how it evolves and grows over the coming years. Expand

There are missions, there is a story, but you have to make the effort to get involved with them. The story does not come to you, you have to go to the story.

The stories happen in specific star systems and if you are not in them, then you wont be able to get involved. You can still pick up missions, but you have to make the effort to decide how you want your story to unfold.

Personally, I love trading and exploring and picking up the odd bounty by killing pirates. I don't want the biggest ship, I don't want the most money or kills. I just enjoy flying around the galaxy, buying and selling and taking out the odd bad guy. So far I have logged about 100 hours and my only challenge is finding time to play.

I may get bored, but I have a sight seeing list that is going to take me a long time to get through :-)

The game has been designed with a pure space sim sandbox experience in mind so there is no hand holding or central story to be the hero of. It is just you, your friends and the galaxy. The main factions struggle for power and you can participate... among the thousands of other players. The combined results of all those players (sometimes fighting in opposite sides, PVP and all) will determine how the galaxy evolves...

Elite Dangerous' Robot Griffon will rise above this and rightly should. The choice to deliver an online only game was the right one and the interweaving of the developing narrative is already creating a hugely immersive experience for players. The game experience is rich and varied already with much still to be delivered from the aims and objectives of the design. Already, the support for a variety of innovative controllers (Voice Attack, TrackIR, Oculus) and the careful fly model design to reinvigorate the gamer's joystick market demonstrates the passion and commitment of the design and development team. The scaling of graphic requirements is also a great nod to the variety of available hardware out there for players. You had three lives, and perhaps a power-up, a bomb or a bonus item of some sort. You could get a bonus life/bomb/item at various points through the game. You played till you lost your lives and that was it.
Then along came Elite, which through away the rule book and tried to do something different. And it did. And without Elite breaking the rules back then you probably wouldn't have games like GTA, Eve, Warcraft, etc.,
Now, 30yrs later it is trying to break the mold again by throwing away the new 'rule book' for online gaming. Look at the games that are out there... What do you see?
You see a selection of game that all appear to be different from each other, but have a closer look... Nearly all of them follow the same pattern (or rules).
1 - Start game with big introduction placing you in the middle of a big event.
2 - Make the player the most important character in the event.
3 - Give player a walkthough and then set stages for them to complete
4 - At the end of each stage give the player a bonus
5 - At the end of a set of stages, give them a boss fight and a bonus
6 - Repeat till end of story.
Now, I enjoy some of these games myself, play a lot of them. But you are basically following the same process through each game.
    Now here comes Elite...
1 - It places you in a live galaxy.
2 - You aren't the most important person in the game.
3 - It allows you to find your own way.
4 - They provide a set of events which you can decide to interact with 'if' you want to.
5 - There are no boss fights, but your interactions actually influence how the events/story evolves.
6 - There is no end of story.
But there is one major thing needed... An Imagination!
That is what is lacking in the other games, They give you everything and you don't need to put any of yourself in to the game. Elite is different...
Instead of being a game that plans your every move and leads you down a set path, Elite is totally open.
Elite is whatever 'You' bring to the game.

Sure there are some bugs in the game (but when is there NOT bugs in a new release, especially the games that have the always online DRM). Doesn't matter how much beta testing they give a game, there is always going to be some teething troubles, and if you can't accept that and expect the game to be 110% perfect on release, AND hold your hand while they walk you through every step of the game, then you should sell your PC and go back to board games.

I have been playing Elite since early Beta I can honestly say I am not tired at all of it... almost a year now.

This game wont stop surprising me and devs are releasing updates and extra content like clockwork since then. I just cant wait for the first person and the planetary free landing and flight expansions.

Combat and dogfight is just epic, especially when I fly with friends. I cant wait for the squadron mechanics. If playing with friends now is already great, with those babies in it will be awesome.

What it is:- A strategic Simulator mix with plenty of Action if you want it and are willing to get stuck in.

What it isn't:- is a Shootemup.

At the moment the MultiPlayer aspect is not that good however this is being further developed and will improve soon with the ability to control and co-ordinate wings in January.

Some people complain that there is no intereaction with other people in the game, but I don't seem to have that issue and only this afternoon every system I seem to have visited has had at least one human player amongst the NPCs. Some have had considerably more and I inadvertantly clipped 2 on dashing into a star port.

You do need to immerse yourself in the game to get the most out of it and there is going to be a pretty vicious war between factions before too long and that really will bring human player into conflict with human player a lot more.

It has a fairly steep learning curve and to begin with you are limited on missions you can take (and the enemies you will face) but this just helps build the anticipation.

It isn't a game you will reach the top (not that there is such a thing) quickly and to get the biggest space ships will take a lot of work and time.

Oh and if you want more incentive, there is a £10,000 reward for getting to Triple Elite status first. That definitely won't be me, as my gameplay style is not suited to that.

Bought this game as a preorder and just started playing. Cant praise it enough. Already had my first few PVP encounters and cant get enough! I have just uninstalled SC due to the crappy development process rid of bugs and pay to win. Elite will probably satisfy my space sim needs for the foreseeable!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a teenager 30 years ago I played the 1984 BBC Micro 'model B' original, and witnessed it change the concept of the computer "game" for ever, it is still one of the greatest games I've ever played (and I've played a great many before and since).
This new version recaptures the essence of the original. Hugely ambitious in scope (the entire Milky Way to explore with as much accuracy as possible) and with beautifully realistic graphics ... finally no need to use my imagination to translate black and white wire-frame graphics, it's like I'm actually there!
Admittedly multiplayer interaction is too rare and needs a bit of work, but given the awe-inspiring potential of this game this is a minor gripe.
It perhaps says a lot about the human condition that all I've done, and I feel most of us start off with when first thrown randomly into Elite's galaxy is try and find our way home to Earth. I've done that now, it was emotional, and now feel I can take on the rest of the galaxy - and I can't wait.

You can leave Earth behind in this game and for a while you really are in space. The fact it gets this right is an incredible feat. Quite simply the game I have played more than any other in a lifetime of gaming. Not without faults it's true but it's getting better with every iteration.

Lately I have been playing games like Far Cry series, Metro Last Light, Insurgency, PayDay2 etc. When I heard about Elite Dangerous it intrigued me so I bought the game in the middle of January of this year and have been playing ever since. As a matter of fact ED is the only game I have played since I loaded it!!

I have read several reviews that complain about the following:

    - game has no depth
    - game is boring
    - not much to do
    - has a lot of bugs and glitches
    - the game is not MMO
    - the game is empty

Well my comment is the above comments are all a bunch of rubbish!! currently there is a ton of stuff you can do, if there wasn't I would not be playing it! ED is the most immersive game that I have ever played and you actually do feel like you are in a spaceship travelling through the Galaxy. ED really gets your imagination flowing and the sense of adventure happening. Right now I'm half time Trader and half time Bounty Hunter. I'm currently Allied and Friendly in several Star Systems and I'm having the time of my life!

ED is the best PC Gaming experience I have ever had in a long time!

People who fly from A to B all the time doing a dogfight sometimes on the way , dont get what this game is about . There is so much to explore its staggering .
You can already go to the planets surface it just takes a few hours . And atmosphere isnt implemented so it seems you fly backwards when flying in the same direction the planet spins.

For the Dota and console kids who dont know what to do with freedom , avoid this game. This will also help keep the community somewhat friendly.

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
