The thousands of game play footage in Youtube can easily tell the story better than my words, just look at the channels by Edwin Stowe, Isinona or Neon Raven. Actual gameply footage is just astonishingly fun and beatiful at the same time.

You can play as pirate, bounty hunter, mercenary, trader, explorer etc... alone or with friends. Influencing the main factions around to get the most out of a system or participating in the story line driven by major faction injected events...

All in all probably the best space sim around for a long time.

Great game with a robust foundation for gameplay in a 1:1 galaxy and an engaging combat system. 6DoF, in both assist on and off flying modes will make all space sim fans enjoy it at its best. Best support for a game that I have seen for ages. The dev team has been there since the start and and the great forum support is obvious. Excellent support by devs during all pre release phases and on release. The minimum number of bugs and stability of the servers in launch is testament of a serious team that means space business.

Star Citizen! You better wake up and deliver something! Anything! Whenever you can! Even if it is in 5 years time! Take your time! The glove has been thrown. That oculus rift dk2 support!

Its an open world game so you decide what your story is situated inside a dynamic galaxy which responds to what all the players do. Right now I'm battling a slave rebellion and fighting against a blockade by the Federation as key factions continue their power struggle throughout the galaxy.

There are a few things that need improvement upon such as better functions for group play, which I understand is coming early in 2015. But in all honesty I find myself in gamer heaven right now. I just can't stop playing it..

I suspect I'll be playing this title for years to come, and it will only improve and become more feature rich over time. Don't let the whiners put you off, its a fantastic game.

See you in the galaxy Commanders! :)

On the right track! I will start with the bad: There is a lack of content at the moment within the game and the multiplier aspect of it is pretty much non-existent but as this a title that's still being actively developed, you can expect those to be improved in the future. I took part in the testing process since Alpha and I have to say that Frontier knows what it's doing. Features wereOn the right track! Features were being implemented fast and reliable, with fixes coming out literally next day (Say Beta 3.0 was released on Thursday, Beta 3.01 would be released on Friday fixing major bugs and Beta 3.02 would be release on Monday to fix minor bugs). I'm confident that in a couple of months this will be quite a different game.

As for the good in it... where do i start:
    - Looks amazing - the cobra engine is a beast, the title looks absolutely fantastic and the aesthetic is amazing. The cheap ships look and feel cheap while the expensive ones seem very luxurious.
    - Sounds amazing - the people that made the sound effects and music for this game should have a statue built in their honer. Find a youtube video of a hyperspace jump, get your best headphones on, full screen it and have a look. There is no question about it.
    - Feels amazing - the bigger the ship, the heavier it feels. Inertia is a real thing and you have to take it into account. The thrusters on your ship will do everything in their power to keep your mistakes in line but the blame of crashing into an asteroid is 100% yours - until you turn flight assist off then good bye all control over anything; you better have lightning reflexes for this mode.
    - Performs amazing: The minimum system requirements are those of a mid-range PC from 6 years ago. On my system which has a GTX660 (not Ti) I can run the game at 55-60FPS with all details on Max @1080p. Frontier do not kid around when it comes to optimization.
    - Support for all sorts of immersion technology including Track IR, FaceTrackNoIr and Oculus Rift.
    - Evolving universe: Every aspect of the universe is player-influenced and determined by player behavior. Revolutions in start-systems get started because a group of 10-20 players decided to help out the local rebel party. There is an in-built news system that reflects how the galaxy evolves and how the balance of power gets affected. The game-world feels truly alive!

Even with the current shortage in content and non-existing MP you will have plenty to do for the first 100-200 hours and unless you blitz through those in 10 days, by the time you're done playing Frontier have probably released more stuff for you to enjoy.

For now 9/10 because of missing features and content. Once those are in I will change the grade of the game but for what it is I believe this is fair.

This is the most fun I have had in a PC game in years. Elite has that "just want to play for a few more minutes until it is 4:00 in the morning factor". While more content is needed it is fun as it is and Frontier is hard at work with addition free content and eventually paid add ons, such as first person and planet landing. I highly recommend Elite Dangerous.

Yes. I am going to agree on the fact that it might be light on content now, but looking at the news and the possibilities this can be a dream coming true very soon (as it alredy is, really). You can choose from bounty hunting and having GREAT fun killing those other ships, to trading between stations and making a nice profit for each run. What people also must get is the fact that it is a simulator, it is NOT eve online, it is a simulator. If you dislike the times it take to travel to point A to B, or the FSD drive itself, or anything of that, I'd say this game is not for you, but if you like a great space sim with great features and even better potential, I'd definetely pick it up.

Highly recommendable for all space sim fans out there:
Pros: Complex controls, in depth ship customization options, ability to pursue your advancements your own way, massive galaxy to explore, death actually holds consequences.
Cons: A few major glitches/game issues at present, training missions don't cover some very important content.

Gameplay is awesome. In space no one can hear you cry of pleasure. And that is what happens to me when I play this game! Love the graphics, the sound, the in game voice comms with friends, the landings the take offs, the smuggling... it´s the little sim details that make this game. And the glorious combat.

No major issues there to playing with my buddies although I miss some shared reward and grouping options. Those seem to be coming soon so... 9.

Gorgeous, fun and very -VERY- slow paced.
To enjoy Elite, I believe, you have to be a very patient person. You want action? You'll get action, but of course after 40 hours of grinding trade in order to get a somewhat decent ship.
Life's hard, so deal with it, Elite is hard. Not for everyone. Gorgeous graphics, but it can get a Little... Repetitive, I suppose. Not a problem for me,

You are buying a game which is constantly being developed and expanded
You are required to have an internet connection while you play.

Ok? Got that? Then prepare for the most delicious space simulation game imaginable right now.

The physics are a blend of real, imagined and reconstructed to make interstellar distances traversable in short times but with meaningful distances and mechanisms. To allow for a dogfight feel, turning sideways is a lot slower than rolling and climbing or dropping to your target.

You can turn off 'Flight Assist' which makes the flight model far more realistic, but personally that's a truly tricky experience. Perhaps I will master it later on, but for now, the assisted manouvering is just dandy.

Trade is fun, slightly unpredictable but again relies on a variety of economy types and combinations.

Fighting is more fun! Dogfights in space have never been done so well. If you have a great graphics card you will not have seen prettier.

The only thing lacking in my opinion is the instruction manual which pretty much gives you the basics and leaves you to learn the rest.

Forearmed with the above caveats though, I think this is an excellent purchase and well worth supporting.

A lot of negative reviews are based on very specific requirements that weren't met. To give this game less than 5 out of 10 though is lunacy...

Comparing it to X3(we will pretend that X-rebirth does not exist) you are not getting player owned stations or NPC's working for you, you don't get to command your own fleet and you don't get to build your own industrial empire.
But as someone who played X3 a lot I can say that managing stations and fleets were pain in the rear, thought the fact that you could own all that goodness was great.

    Now where E:D shines is:
Beautiful graphics, fantastic sound, shared universe,mind-boggling vastness of the gameworld and THE BEST flight/combat mechanics in space sims, great deal of loadouts (do not try to compare it with EVE nothing will ever come close to that (unless procedurally generated)).

Where Elite does not shine is:

Variety of stuff you can do in game fight/haulage/exploration, multi-player there is no EASY way to play with friends (patch 1.2 should address that), P2P architecture of the game lends itself to hacking and exploitation (COH maphack style), there is no off-line mode, If you want the best ship in the game with the most expensive load out mmm... it's like you start playing EVE now and want to pilot a Titan (just joking it wont take so long, lets say Nighthawk).
And for a new players there is not much of a hand holding and tutorials are not great (game dares to think that you know how to use google).

I do not care about playing with friends (I don't have any :() and empire building aspect is not so important for me. I play solo, so I do not meet any hackers (though I am so far away from the popular systems that it wouldn't be an issue even If I played open).

What I care is VR support and oh my this thing is mindblowing. You are in the spaceship you are the pilot. Once you played E:D in VR there is no coming back, every time you will play space sim on a 2d screen you will feel that it is just not the same, something is lacking it is not real any more . So +2 for that.
I hope that SC will have VR suport of the same level (or better), but until SC is out E:D is the best space sim.
Soon we will have more contenders Limit Theory, Eve Valkyrie, Enemy Starfighter, Star Citizen, Darkfield.

PS: If you want to play in VR you need gtx 970 or better (if you have 270X or gtx660 don't bother).

    1. The internet seems to have a vendetta against this game due to its current only online status, which is said to be changed in the future. These people tend to rate it very badly and for superficial reasons. The 0/10 and 1/10 reviews are most definitely angered offline players. What I recommend you do is look up gameplay on YouTube and see if you like it, if you do buy it, if you dislike it don't buy it.
    2. Many people say that this game feels like its "still in Beta" and in some respects that is true, but with patches and updates being released very quickly, this problem should be fixed very soon.

Elite Dangerous is an futuristic, space flight "sand box" game. You play a solo character who is a small time pilot with a spaceship. You can play in several different ways. You can play in several different ways. You can engage in combat, in trade between solar systems, explore new systems or mine asteroids. You can do one, some or all of these, but you don't HAVE to do any of them. I think this is one of the best aspects of the game because it allows for different types of people to enjoy the game. Some people aren't good at combat. In some games, that rules out the whole game, but in this game, you can prosper in the game without firing a shot and often the occasional attacker by avoiding 'bad neighborhoods' and running away. With 400 billion solar systems, there's space for a lot of different people.

I also like it's emphasis on space travel as a thing in itself, where you need to plot courses, take fuel into account and navigate around starts and planets in order maintain the best speed. Space flight is not simply a thing between battles, it's a thing itself. Because Elite Dangerous is more than just a first person shooter in space, there is considerable learning curve at first, and there can be a good deal of time between combats (although you can always find them if you spend time with the game to find out how). It's a space game and not a shooter with space as a skin.

When I see criticisms of it being "boring", it usually boils down to people having an expectation that it's solely a combat game (it's not) or it's a 'conquer and rule the galaxy' game which it's not as well. It's better to think of it like a "Firefly The Game" game where your focus is to trade and do missions to keep yourself flying, rather than conquer a planet and build a private empire. That's not something you can do. If people expect it to be something it;'s not , that's when I see complaints. Might as well complain that crossword puzzles have no guns.

Your actual options as far as the game is concerned and how you want to play it are essentially limitless. To be fair, as everything is organized around income generation, this does somewhat restrict what you could do, at least at the moment. You've got several general income paths, either by trade, by exploration, or by combat.

Exploration is purely exploration at the moment. It involves very pretty pictures, interesting systems, and a whole lot of scanning. It's somewhat repetitive but less so than other things. The appeal of exploration is the views, and really the chance encounters with extremely rare stellar objects, including Earth-like planets. If you're the first person to scan these objects, your name is permanently written on it, netting you prestige with any other player who visits. Now the galaxy is a reasonably accurate depiction of the Milky Way, with around 400 billion different star systems that can be visited. This is a major selling point of the game, and provided you're willing to go off the beaten path, there is no lack of places to scrawl your name saying "I've been here". Several large areas in the galaxy that currently require permits will be homes to vast alien empires, once this component of the game is implemented. Eventually the game designers will be implementing expansions that allow for planetary landings, though on the hundreds of thousands of Earth-like worlds, I wonder how they could successfully implement alien wildlife in a way that was realistic, exotic, and also reflecting the differences between worlds. I imagine this will be an incredibly large expansion, that is if it will net the realism that the designers are hoping for.

Trading is the most repetitive of all game activities, though it tends to be the most profitable after a certain point. It used to be the absolute most profitable activity in the game, but significant profit increases have been added to the other income streams, balancing this out a bit. It is by far the safest way to make money, and it takes a lot less initial investment to get going. There is a very zen quality to trading, jumping between stars and plotting routes. A subcomponent of trading is mining, which is not particularly interesting, but a very effective way to get out of lower tier ships. Lastly, rare trade goods net some of the highest profit margin, but require large jumps and sophisticated route mapping to do well. Also human pirates love to predate these routes, so your day can easily get ruined if you're not paying attention. Black market trading is the one kind of trading that is more interesting in its own right. Sometimes you have to sneak into stations past the police forces, who will ruin your day if you get caught. Lots of fun when you do it right, and pirates will be selling all their goods on the black market.

Finally, combat. You can bounty hunt, play as a mercenary, or be a pirate. All are a huge amount of fun, and it's never repetitive because every fight plays out differently. It's incredibly skill based, and the attention to detail that the developers paid really shines in combat. You have full 3-D maneuvering, allowing you far more sophisticated maneuvers than you could fly with a plane. Clever people with good situational awareness and piloting skills will excel at combat.

Now, as far as the overall feel of the game, the sandbox portion cannot be overstated. This may be a major turn-off for some people. This is a game where hundreds of thousands of players are always interacting and aiding in the progression of the game. The game actively changes based on player input, and developer prompting as well. But in a sea of several hundred thousand, the actual impact you have will be quite small. For example, a recent mercenary mission I played for around 15 hours, made 11 million credits was in the top 15% for progressing the mission, but the mission wasn't completed until 35 BILLION credits were made. As you can see, no one person can change the course of the game. There is also no false premise about giant universe ending events. No game bosses (except the capital ships) and no god-like level of achievement where you can't be beaten. You will probably never be able to own your own capital class ship. They cost hundreds of billions of credits. So you can't bully your way through the game with your giant pile of cash. And you can't count of being some massive hero either.

This game is presently solid. The fundamentals are great. Though there is a lack, at the moment of content diversity, they keep adding to the game and expanding this. Eventually players will be able to walk around, and FPS will become a thing. But if you want a storyline or a quest line, you will not get it in this game. This sandbox factor means no one holds your hand. I like it, others don't.

The way the galaxy has been modelled with procedural generation to a dot with actual data is amazing. Travelling through it is a dream come true. After seeing so many Youtube videos of Elite explorers I had to try it out and it has not disappointed. Black hole light distorsions, nebulae, oyu name it... Being able to chase and combat wanted PC or NPC to know stars has no price.

However, once I actually started to figure out the intricate complexities of the game, I realized that this game is absolutely incredible, and the developers are continually making it better. Many of the negative reviews stated that the game, when released, wasn't "complete" and therefore not worth the full price, but I beg to differ. The game is still $60, and the developers are continuously updating the game with huge content that most games would charge as a $10 DLC. With Elite: Dangerous, when you buy the game, you are buying the current game and all future updates. If you go to the forums or newsletters and read about the developer's long-term goals, you'll realize that they are 110% committed to continue updating, fixing, and improving the game. I honestly cannot think of a game that I have been more excited about than this one, and I've already put more time into than most games. I highly recommend it, and I caution readers of these reviews to take most of the negativity with a grain of salt because most of these negative reviews are from people who expected a game that was never promised to them. Break out of your comfort zone from time to time and explore systems you haven't been to in order to find more lucrative missions/ resources.

Also, as sort of a side-note, this game more or less requires a good joystick, preferably a HOTAS setup.

An Overall amazing game. There is a verity of Things to do from Exploring to Pirating. The PowerPlay Update (1.3) has slightly de-valued some of the games event (e.g Factions expanding into systems) but this is counterbalanced by the rest of the amazing updates 1.1 (Community Goals) and 1.2 (Wings)

I am old enough to have played Elite back in 1986 in a small Sinclair Spectrum microcomputer.
The game is back and the same old feeling of space exploration is still unique and challenging!

I have a total 150 hours on Steam on this game ... and I do not think I will stop soon ! ...

Before I start, let me say this: I used to play the original Elite on a C64, back in the 80s. I remember those days well, and E:D has taken a lot from the original game.

Before I start, let me say this: I used to play the original Elite on a C64, back in the 80s. I remember those days well, and E:D has taken a lot from the original game.
Let me start with the elephant in the room: "Miles wide, inches deep". Yes, compared to a lot of other games (whether it's other genres, or games that have had years to be built upon and deepened, like Eve), on first glance, there doesn't seem to be much you can do.
However, I feel like that feeling comes up once you approach the game in today's fashion, as in "I want to get a better ship, grind with that, get an even better one etc until I have the most expensive one".
I don't think this will work, and I feel it's obvious that that will lead to boredom eventually. Instead, it's up to YOU to decide what you like to do, and you can switch routes. It's not like an MMO, where you pick one class and spec and then you're mainly a healer or tank, or you focus on PVP or PVE.

In E:D, you can do PvE, PvP, trade, bounty-hunt, mine, trade, explore. If you want to earn money as fast as possible, there are recommended methods to do so, but to me, the fun part is trying out and doing different activities.
Right now, I have one ship which I do missions with or hunt down pirates, or dabble with some other things, and one ship which I do trade-routes with - long journeys which involve trading and can bring quite some profit.

Some activites are more exciting, others are rather relaxed. Trade routes for example take some time and involve mostly navigating and travelling. However, when you're hijacked (interdicted) by a pirate with a cargo hold full of valuable stuff, and you need to decide whether you try to simply run and sell your stuff or try to fight, things get tense quickly, depending on your equipment.

Look at the success of a game like Euro Truck Simulator... people do enjoy games like that, and it's ONE thing you can do in E:D.

It's true, the game does not hold your hands, and I recommend to read some beginner guides or watch some videos. However, IMO, it's not as bad as people make it sound. There are tutorial missions, and before I even started the game, I did those a few times. They taught me the basics of navigating, flying, dogfights, docking etc. Will you be a master after that? No, it still takes practice, but after doing these, I was able to start a new game and start doing missions, some fighting, trading right away.

I do recommend to use a joystick with this. It can be done with kbm, but to me, playing this with a joystick (possibly with a thruster added) is much more fun, and feels more immersive. There are suggested settings for different sticks, but a lot of players set them up to their own liking. Do the tutorials and get a feel for what you need, then assign buttons on your stick to those functions, so it feels natural to YOU.

There also is a story happening... alien artefacts have appeared, and just last week, people accidentially found some barncale-looking alien things on a planet. The story is developing, and there is a good chance there will be contact with an alien race at some point... and we don't know whether it will be peaceful or a conflict.

My point is: E:D has taken over some things from its ancestor... it's pretty old school, where there is a steep learning curve, no set path (meaning you pick what you wanna do, and you can change paths), you will prolly have to use your imagination to fill out the gaps and add more to the incrediby huge universe you can explore.

To me, the game is incredibly immersive, it can be quite exciting, and at least to me, there was a nice mix of frustration (losing expensive cargo or being killed) and fistpump-moments, like beating a tough enemy or earning a pile of money from trading and getting a new ship.

A lot has been said about the whole business model, with Horizons costing that much, instead of being an added DLC to the base-game for a lower prize. I am not getting into that, but let me say this: Playing E:D for two weeks convinced me to buy Horizons to have even more options in game, and I look forward to trying the new aspects of the game, looking forward to what will be added soon.

As a fan of the original Elite, I was surprised how much this game feels like the original. It's very old school, I think that's why it polarizes so much. It can be tough, can require a lot of research or trial and error, it can't easily be judged by a single 1- or 2 hour play session.
However, it is a ton of fun, with lots of things to try out, and I feel that I already got my money's worth out of this. I just upgraded to Horizons, and currently do trade routes (while having a movie play in the background, so it's a relaxed activity) to save up for a bigger trade hauler, so my current tradeship can be used as an explorer and planet-lander-ship next.
looking forward a lot to more adventures and seeing how the whole alien-storyline develops.

Elite Dangerous is a brilliant game that at its core experience gives you the most immersive experience of holy **** I'm flying a warp capable star ship that is currently out there on the market.

So lets look at its Good Bad and Ugly

Good: Elite Dangerous is incredibly immersive set in a beautiful 1 to 1 scale recreation of the milky way galaxy with over 400 billion star systems and aside from the handful that are permit locked you can visit every damn one of them. It's flight model while not 100% realistic is still very approachable easy to learn and hard to master. It sucks you in with the incredible scale of the galaxy around you and the feeling of being your favourite sci-fi hero flying through space that no other game out there can properly recreate.

Bad: Any game of this scale will have bugs and sometimes these bugs have been Bethesda game on release day level crazy but those generally get patched rather quick, the real problems with Elite are that it suffers the same problem that Skyrim did of being a mile wide and an inch deep. The game doesn't really offer any depth to the player. In an odd way you're not going to feel like you've gone too deep into the game, but more like the game has gone too deep into you. On a personal level this works for me, but for many players they mind this area to be lacking. Some other issues are that while you can do whatever you please some of the areas of the game feel like they could have been done better and there is a huge payout disparity between many activities as well as a lot of grinding if you want to progress rank with a power or superpower.

Ugly: The game is finished but not finished. It's finished in the traditional sense that it has reached v1.0 and is no longer in Beta. It's unfinished in the sense that the developer still has a lot of stuff they want to do with it and were seeing 4 to 5 major content patches to the game each year. The Elite I'm playing today is not the same Elite I was playing in December 2014 when I bought it, and come December 2016 I doubt it will be the same game I'm playing now. While this is overall a good thing some of these updates have been met with controversy which is what has lead to many of the negative reviews you will read.

TL;DR : It's absolutely worth a buy if you want a game that doesn't hold your hand and sometimes feel like its actively trying to kill you while sucking you into an immersive galaxy that will grab hold of your soul and choke the life out of it until you love the game so bloody much that you wind up spitting hate and fire at it because the dev updated something and you disagreed.

To enjoy Elite you have to provide the story and imagination - you can do everything from trading, mining, exploring, bounty hunting, piracy, combat, etc. Elite is set in a 1:1 replica of the Milky Way so to say it's scope is huge is an understatement. I have just under 700 hours of gameplay and my enjoyment hasn't slowed down one bit, if anything it keeps getting more exciting.

It's an absolutely beautiful game, when was the last time you sat and just stared at a game for more than a few seconds? You'll find yourself doing this several times an hour as the galaxy is an amazingly beautiful place. With some of the best HOTAS/controller support I've ever seen you can build out as extensive a setup as you can dream up. When I get in the SRV/rover I take my hands of my HOTAS, slide forward and grab my racing wheel and pedals to drive. Then back in my ship and I slide back to my HOTAS for flying. It is by far the most immersive game I've ever seen and if you're a VR player you MUST give Elite a try. It has an extremely steep learning curve, my advice is to watch Youtube videos and find one of the many Discord servers dedicated to the game. Virtually everyone you meet there will be more than willing to help as we've all been there and know how hard the learning is. While there are gankers/griefers their impact is really very minor and the community is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with. As you can see I can't recommend Elite more - if you think it's your kinda game well then it is.

This game IS about missions: transport, combat, mining. Unless you don't like the original game or dont like space sims, DONT BUY IT. I love the original game and i 'm loving this one. For all who complies about grinding: Elite was ALWAYS about it, explore and grind. Exploraton is what makes the game so cool and you can make it with your friends.

The game does not force you to do anything. You're absolutely free from the second you start the game. If you choose to grind, it's your own fault.

I gave 8.5/10 rounded to 9. The 1.5 points missing because of poor design in certain areas. The game should really have an in-game way to search galaxy-wide for commodities and their prices, stations and what they're bying/selling/offering, plot neutron routes, set routes by using waypoints, display near star types in the left hand side panel. At the moment, there are third party tools for all of this, but it involves alt-tabbing every now and then which is a bit immersion ruining and tedious. Additionally, the powerplay should be redesigned and made more dynamic. Should these be implemented and fixed, this game would be 10/10.

The best thing is, that this game keeps evolving. The development has been very slow, but it does happen.

Oopsy... but that doesn't mean new players shouldn't try it, even if they only intend to put in just 50-100h into it.

It has a great concept, decent visuals, amazing audio and it can be played solo (as I played most of it) and/or cooperatively or in PvPvE mode (with MMO features if you so choose).

I had the most amazing experience a few years back, I explored the Milky Way as it is recreated in the game (they hired experts in the field to make sure that the galaxy is recreated according to data we have, the nearest 150k systems that were mapped by astronomers are present in the game, while everything else that we don't have data for had to be guessed so that the number and types of bodies match what scientists would expect with our current understanding of things - how cool is that?).

The journey took 6 months IRL (playing several times a week 2-3h each play session). In game I jumped over 60k light years and visited 3000 star systems across half the galaxy, looking to chart at least one star of each class and size, at all stages of development recreated in the game (made up my own challenge, because this is that kind of a game). Not going to lie, it's a boring experience, it's about the journey not the instant gratification. While playing I watched all the TV series, YT content that I never made time for and re-watched some sci-fi shows too. The difficulty comes from the fact that if you die, you loose all the data you collect and the boredom makes it easy to make mistakes and get burned by jumping into a dangerous system because tens of previous jumps were safe. If it were any other way, you'd lose interest really fast. But in of itself, this approach is a very realistic portrayal of how such a journey would be 99% of the time. It's just that in that other 1% you find something that is so amazing or breathtaking that it makes it all worth while. And this is just one of the things I've tried.

It's also why I confidently tell you to ignore the reviews and the negativity, dive into a sci-fi experience that is unamtched.

It certainly isn't perfect, but with Odyssey and after a very rocky launch it's the most feature complete and rich space sim experience you can have on PC. It looks and runs great (Admittedly this is on a 5900x with a 4070ti and 64GB of RAM) and has an absolute ton of different kinds of content to do and places to explore. The king of the space sims at the moment!

Some (well, most gamers now) will not like it, because it's a vast galaxy and there is no hand-holding what so ever. It chucks you in and you have to figure stuff out yourself and progress however you like. It's also quite difficult to start off.

In the end though. Frontier is pushing the boundaries and is trying something new and for that they have to be respected. It's FAR from the generic crop of FPS and RPG games we see so many of these days.

The flight model is a bit off since you feel like you're flying an airplane in space. Mining is more about finding a good rock to mine, like it was during the gold rush. There is no "minigame" in mining your literally outfit your ship with mining gear & head out to an asteroid field. How do you find a good asteroid or a good asteroid field to mine in? By learning how to read the data you're given & learning what is actually valuable. You then break off pieces of rock with your laser, collect them so the material makeup can be analyzed by your ship (yes you have to physically fly around and collect the pieces of asteroid SORRY POINT & CLICK fans again SPACE SIM). The galaxy map is huge and will take some time to learn to use. Missions consists of ways to make cash for those not good enough at killing guys or that don't want to risk mining. The "missions" are basically independent contracts for you to take goods from A to B in X amount of time, they should be called jobs so the WoW fans can stop crying. There is no "story" around this because its a space sim. You have a ship, and things need to be shipped, what the job yes or no? Now the fun comes in getting those goods from A to B, as someone is always trying to make money through piracy. Everything else is all space sim, if your looking for a point and click game, keep moving. You will have to learn to actually fly your ship. If you're used to games spoon feeding your ego so you can feel like the man, again keep moving. The only reason you feel like the man while playing Elite is because you can fly that ship, kill those pirates, found the sweetest asteroid field out in the middle of nowhere and you're headed by to a space station with a sweet load. There are so many system to go to dual star solar systems, white dwarf, just crazy.

(CO-OP) It is very hard to hook up with your friends as you can spawn very far apart since this is space (its kinda big you know). But really this doesn't matter as much since you have to figure out how to go about making your own fortune. Again it's not Wow where you raiding together.
(Trading) Was impacted by aggressive NPC's but this has been addressed. Again since there is no hand holding you have to figure out how to make money trading. You have to learn who imports or exports what and at what price.
The biggest point I can make its that people see MMO and think Wow in space, one more time IT'S A SPACE SIM.

Sadly it does lack a lot of meat at the moment but hopefully with time the developers will put more things to do besides trekking around the same star systems delivering drinks and drugs to the different markets and blowing up the occasional player you may find.

Everything about the game is great (what little there is to do) and definitely worth the price if you can find the game on sale. Anything less than $59.99 would make this a great buy.

Multiplayer utilizes P2P style ala Dark Souls/BloodBorne so if you're okay with that then it is an enjoyable experience. You can wing up with your friends in private groups or you can go into open play with them and complete missions or just fly together while trading to feel slightly more secure. There is a solo mode but you still need to be online which is explained by the fact that you still affect the game's server while not having to really interact with it.

Combat is frustrating but very rewarding. Learning to fly in this game isn't easy and many will downvote this game simply because of that, but if you can take the time to master it then you will have a very enjoyable experience. Do yourself a favor and spend a good two to three hours doing the combat tutorials to get the hang of flying while under fire. It will do you a lot of good.

The music in this game is immersive and fun to listen to in and outside of the game. It blends all of the genres of sci-fi very well and if you have a good sound system/headset you will have a blast hearing it.

Bugs: As all games post 2012 are apt to have... There are plenty. They are being fixed regularly but until they are all found and patched it is something we'll just have to deal with.

Cheaters online: As of now they exist as with many other online games. If it can be hacked then it will be. The Developers have been pretty lax about this which is very disappointing but they have made the claim that it is being worked on but until anything concrete has been done everyone should take the statement with a grain of salt.

For the competitive players... The game does have PvP. There is powerplay for those who want to join factions and make a difference. There isn't a leader board or tournaments (as far as I know) but if you want to pull your cock out and say you're better than someone then you absolutely can. It is very satisfying to destroy a much larger ship than you are flying or showing off who has the better flying/targeting skills but you won't get much beyond some in game currency and maybe a nifty screenshot, assuming you can snap it fast enough before flying into someone or being shot.

Elite:Dangerous is a fun game but it could be even better. Frontier Developments have a lot of decision making to do and hopefully they make the right choices but in the meantime players should just keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best. If E:D doesn't end up taking your fancy there is always the wait for Star Citizen or the plethora of other space sim games in development.

And the galaxy is Huge, as in REALLY HUGE. Its a remarkable thing to even get something that works when its this scale. I just kind of leave feeling that it would be uber epic if at some point they introduce an alien invasion from one of the outer systems. That would push the score to 10. And the game is about the most beautiful i have ever played. If you have at least 200 hours to invest, then this is the game for you. But to be quite honest you need a lot more than that. It is a 100% grind fest, which isnt exactly to my taste, but i can appreciate it for what it is. Expand

Gameplay is robust, sounds are absolutely amazing. It feels a little bit empty right now (well, hey it's space) due to not having any social tools/gameplay, also because there aren't really a variety in models in the game for ships and stations but it's good enough a start for me. Worth a look if you think you'll like trucking through the universe (which I do), the flight controls are lovely but other aspects of the game are decidedly unpolished, such as the mining and refining interface, the chat between players and the lack of group content. Not to mention the distinct lack of a Thargoid invasion, or anything else going on in the Galaxy apart from a dying emperor and a bit of Federation politics, none of it seams to impact your game play. Not only that you can join both sides at once, which I think is a bit silly for a mmorp. You can't even easily make a tidy profit running good old fashioned narcotics, it's performance enhancers instead now. There is a smuggling mechanic which is fun but ultimately not as profitable as just hauling loads of stuff in a big fat slow ship. Gone to is being able to capture the escape pod of your victims and sell them as slaves. Not only that as of the last release I did not notice my actions having any impact on commodity prices, so the most lucrative thing to do was run back and forth to the same 2 space stations, which was a bit dull. My ship felt like Marvin the Robot, game the size of entire Galaxy and all you make me do is go back and forward between the same 2 car parks.

The game is brutal to the uninitiated, space stations will wipe you out in a heart beat if you don't follow protocol, no fines just near instant death, which is a bit ott. Also don't clip a cop by accident in mad dog fight there's no mercy there either.

Still, it keeps me up at night.

Not a perfect game, but I personally love it.

It's not for everyone; it is a game that becomes what you make of it. Commodities trading suit your fancy? Do that. Bounty hunting sound fun? You can do that. Want to slap on an eye patch and plunder other's treasures? Yeap, you can do that. Want to be a vigilante and rough up no-good scum? Sure, go ahead - you can do that. Want to

But, it's not for everyone - space is big, and this game certainly lets you know it.

It's beautiful, peaceful, frantic, and lonely at times... but it always delivers what being in space a 1000yts from now could be like.

    Fantastic game.

I thought I had better put in a review of the game because of some of the absurd reviews and scores here. Scoring a game a 1 or 2 because it's a different game from what you want is pretty pathetic.

If it is not a game YOU want to play, then don’t. And don’t say ‘there’s nothing to do.’ Say there’s nothing I want to do.’ There’s a difference. This is a sandbox game. It's not Mass

If it is not a game YOU want to play, then don’t. And don’t say ‘there’s nothing to do.’ Say there’s nothing I want to do.’

    There’s a difference.

This is a sandbox game. It's not Mass Effect, it’s not EVE, it’s not one of the X games. It’s not Star Wars. It’s not an action RPG or combat simulator. It isn’t even – and pay attention here – it is not a PvP game. It has PvP elements in it for those that want that but it is not the central mechanic.

It is a sandbox game and the sandbox is the whole galaxy. So don't complain that space is too big, solar systems are too big. Take it up with The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Space is BIG. It’s so big that on occasion your objective might be orbiting a planet that if you choose to take the mission without checking the location on the galactic map and then choose not to abandon it, you might spend an hour flying to it. By choice – your choice. I'm writing this while heading for a huge payout at a station 0.14 light years from the jump point. This is the first time I've chosen to do something like this.

Solar systems really are big in reality and this is a simulation. Get over it. Most the time it takes a couple of minutes, during which time you can be looking out for distress calls and other optional events, watching the movement of other ships for potential ambushers or just appreciating the experience.

This game says - here is a whole galaxy. It's filled with sights to see, things to get involved in. There are pirates, there are factions, there are empires, there are countless trading and mission opportunities, there are a lot of ships and an almost infinite number of ways to configure them to your taste.

Go mine asteroids, go hunt bounties, go explore, go trade, go fight for an empire, go ally with a faction. Play in open world, a closed group with friends or on your own. Do whatever you want. Just don't ask me to hold your hand and lead you along the path to becoming emperor of the Galaxy. You’re just some guy among hundreds. You're not a superhero and the Galaxy does not revolve around you. In fact it doesn't care if you live or die.

Basically this is a game for you to make of it what you will. What I like in particular is that anyone can play and have fun. You don't have to have the best ship, you don't have to be an ace combat pilot. You just have to be able to set yourself goals. Whether that is becoming a top ranked explorer, a rich trader, an Admiral or whatever.

The flight model is easy to get to grips with but detailed enough to reward practice and imagination. The trade system works well, combat can be brilliant. Your brain is just as important as hand/eye coordination. More so. I’m nearly 60 and not great at combat. But that's no problem. I fly a ship configured to suit. I learn how to run from things I know I'm not good enough to fight.

You visit the Steam and Frontier forums and there are always people moaning on about how there are too many interdictions. This is a prime example of being not willing to actually play the game as is.

Listen up. You get interdicted all the time because you sit at the jump in point fiddling with your map while the vultures gather. You get interdicted all the time because you blithely fly in a straight line to your destination regardless of the knot of fighters ahead. You get interdicted all the time because you’ve gone somewhere too dangerous for you to handle. You get interdicted all the time because you haven't scanned the attacker and found it’s some pissant little Adder you can just blow away. And sometimes it's just bad luck. You made sure you had enough to cover the insurance rebuy before jumping into a pirate infested anarchy system, right?

Basically Elite Dangerous with the Horizons pack that brings in planet landings and missions is a fine game if you want to be a small part of a big Galaxy. It's obviously not for everyone and it does have its irritations and downsides. It can and will improve as Frontier release more content.

It's a solid 8/10 now. Ignore the reviews who are scoring it on not being the same as Streetfighter 2 or whatever. It’s Elite. It’s not trying to be anything else and it’s pretty good at being a worthy follow up to Elite and the Frontier games.

Awesome space sim! I was waiting for something like this ever since I played Freelancer over a decade ago. I love the experience of vast space and open world, trading between systems, avoiding pirates, hunting pirates, exploring the stars... This is a "make your own adventure" game so if you expect a storyline and cutscenes you will be disapointed.

The game is huge, and it seems that the developer continues to push for more updates! Really good purchase.

-1 for the lack of more advanced tutorials that would send me off to the world (how to bounty hunt, or how to smuggle)
    - 1 for travel that takes a bit too long

It's a great game for you if you're just sitting around waiting for Star Citizen. I highly recommend this game if you have an Oculus Rift, it's perfect for that.

I am having a delightful time roaming the galaxy. There aren't many games that give me that feeling of awe from celestial bodies and the immensity of space. I'm eagerly awaiting planetary landings, so I can check out the sunsets on different moons and planets. The sound design is excellent. First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
