Surprisingly good. Although it's a railroaded story, it's well told and will appeal to the adult gamer. Kyle Crane is a very pragmatic hero who is out to do his job at almost any cost, even if it means being a bit dark sometimes.

There is a lot of exploring to do, and a decent amount of questing. The game is mostly well balanced, and pleasantly difficult. Normal mode feels normal and not vegetable easy like most games.

The down side is that you'll be killing the same things over and over. The zombies respawn, and what is unforgivable is that the loot does too. You'll be looting the same chests hundreds of times. It would have been better without respawning.

The graphics are decent enough, but not too innovative and not particularly well optimized. With a GTX780 I should get a better framerate than around 40fps on high settings.

Looking at Dying Light, its DLC's and The Following as a complete package, its one of the best zombie game experiences you can find, but that doesnt mean its without faults, of which there a quite few.

At the very core of the experience is the melee combat which is done particularly well, it has proper weight and impact feel, great amount of gore, verticality, if there's one area where it stumbles, its when fighting against human enemies because they can block your attacks repeatedly, take lots of damage while dealing you lots of it, however it gets better near the 2nd half of the game when you get higher end weapons and skills. Where Dying Light also struggles is the projectile based weopons like assault rifles, shotguns and pistols, while they can deal good amount of damage if used well, their gunplay doesnt feel no where near that satisfying compared to other triple A shooters. Dying Light offers great amount of melee weapon types and even greater amount of their modifications. The same weapons degrade over time of their usage and have limited repair amounts before they get useless, at times i felt the degradation effect is just too rapid on certain weapons, but you never run of their supply cuz they just keep coming and you want to test out better gear all the time which pushes you to better manage your inventory cuz you cant carry around too many weapons.

Further on some issues relating combat, i was really sick of zombies locking onto you and putting you into button mashing sequence to shake them off, it got so irritating that i came to conclusion that this mechanic was so stupid that maybe devs are just trolling players. Also the bigger tank type armored zombies had a bug where you at times get close to them, they knock you down, kill you without any apparent animation of them doing anything. All and all, many of the zombie types were hugely annoying like the toads or overpowered volatiles which instantly alert other volatiles if you encounter single one, making engaging combat with them not so satisfying.

Another selling point of Dying Light is the parkour system. If it wasnt for Mirror's Edge series, it could be best free running game in business, but sadly it just doesnt reach the level of polish, feel and finesse of free running systems from Mirror's Edge series nor the original 2008 game nor 2016's Catalyst. Physics in Dying Light are too floaty, weightless, the movement system too sluggish and imprecise, overall the free running mechanics just being too dumbed down at times to make it as compelling as free running in Mirror's Edge. Still, it more than adds to the game's fun factor and makes up for some interesting gameplay opportunities. In some story missions you get to climb and scale some high up buildings and structures which do make you feel like youre in Mirror's Edge, at those moments Dying Light can make Mirror's Edge run for its money a bit.

In terms of story, narrative, writing, characters Dying Light is a mixed bag. The guy you play as, Carl Crane is a pretty stereotypical american hero, overly confident, cocky, overall rather generic fella but he does his part, worst case scenario would be if he's highly unlikable, but he's not luckily. In terms of other characters its the same story mostly, but there are a couple of whom who are decent like Jade and her brother for whom i somewhat cared about actually. Some of the better story bits can be found in side quests with fair amount of diverse and interesting characters for whom you need to do a quick job or few. Main villain Rais is weak to say the least and final showdown with him is a bloody quick time event...i guess Techland really meant it when they said this is their first proper triple A game, too bad they used most of the bad tropes associated with that status.

As for the The Following expansion, its a decent addition to the overall package of Dying Light. Its has a short but intriguing main storyline, good amount of side content, which however is quite repetative outside the side quests. Buggy is fun to use to run down zombies with it, for first few hours that is, after that its just a simple means of getting from point A to B. One thing that in The Following didnt quite made sense to me is that at the storyline's end, youre offered 2 choices on how you want to end it, one of which should massively impact the game world's state, but if you choose it, you can continue to play like nothing freakin happaned, very stupid from narrative perspective.

The definitive Dying Light experience. Contains both the main game with the city map and parkour AND the countryside map with vehicles, plus additional mini-DLCs that are basically just extra single missions. Crazy cheap in 2020. Buy it. Really.

Dying Light was a fabulous and fun game, although definitely a bit flawed. I never regretted my playtime or purchase and would buy the second one for sure, so that's a great endorsement of it. The Following expands on it by keeping the original game, adding a fun and upgradeable buggy, and having a good story and side quests to go with it. I had a lot of fun and that's the point of most games!

I get stolen copies of all the games I try before I pay any company, which saves me from buying games like "Fallout 4" but I can happily report that I buy ALL of the good games that I like.

I bought Dying Light after nearly finishing the game, then shortly after, they provided an "Enhanced Edition," which I played through TWICE.

This game is worth $100. This developer did an awesome job. BUY.THIS.GAME and if you don't want to play it yourself, buy it for someone you love because they will love you for it!

The conversations and quests are well written and interesting, which flow in pace with a good story. Things get scary at night, play it with the lights out and see what I mean. If you are undecided on Dying Light or not that into zombie stuff, I would still definitely recommend trying this because it's a very very well made game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this game to be full of bad design choices and poor story. The overall concept seems reasonable but no different than most other zombie games. The parkour makes for an interesting twist and when it works, it works well but the game itself is clearly targeted at FPS players with the continually overwhelming combat scenarios. This is where the game breaks down badly. Firstly your stamina is so low, even at high levels, that zombies easily overwhelm you such that you have to keep backtracking to avoid them while your stamina regenerates. Naturally the solution is to not go in to large combat situations. Unfortunately this only works the first 30 seconds of combat. Early areas of the game you can take out a couple of zombies in about 30 seconds. In later areas you run across enemies that can easily take 5 minutes to take down because of their massive health bars, your generally weak weapons and low stamina. About every minute new zombies magically join the fray. Making this even worse is that fast zombies come in every couple of minutes as well. This makes what should have been a simple combat encounter grow out of control quickly and often there is nothing you can do to stop it except run away. This is where the later levels get really bad because more and more missions require you to clear waves of enemies to move on. Additionally the larger enemies have attacks that have such a large 360 radius you cannot avoid getting knocked down even if you run away. This makes these bigger enemies just easier to avoid except in the cases you have to fight them (which is often). This probably sounded good on paper but ends up being bad in implementation.

The RPG elements (because every game has to have them it seems) is mostly useless. I didn't particular find any of the skills overly useful or impactful on the missions. They were just excuses to have you do more.

The continual need to upgrade weapons is good early on but by mid game I wasn't finding any wpns better than what I had so having them unavoidably breaking down seems like a mechanic to add realism over any actual good design decision.

The story itself starts out good but the main character is just a bipolar jerk. Sometimes I killed him just to make myself feel better. Throughout the game there are side quests and almost every time the character was of the "if I get to it" mentality. Yet to the main story characters he seemed almost heroic. This got annoying quickly and made me have no connection with the character irrelevant of what happened to him.

The nightime is supposed to be the scariest and it is but unless you are forced to go out it is just easier to sleep until day. It simply isn't worth the effort. At night comes creatures that can out run you and kill you almost instantly even at high levels. They also seem to be able to detect you from just about anywhere irrrelevant of what the map says. These overpowered enemies aren't worth the time or effort it takes to beat them. In one particular mission you're forced to run through a gauntlet of them which is just plain unbalanced and unfair.

Speaking of unfair the final mission is just garbage. I took a point off for it alone. The entire game your skill in parkour and combat is being honed. In the final level you have to parkour perfectly or you instantly die and have to start the section over. Once you finally make it to the end to face the final boss you're ready to put your combat skills to the test - just to find out it is a QTE that you die if you miss one. So the entire game of honing your skills was completely useless in the end. Who in their right mind thought this was remotely a good idea?

Finally there seems to be a course in bad game design that every game developer has to take. One of the courses is on how to give the player the belief that they are getting better at the game, tougher enemies, better wpns, etc. Then for no reason other than a plot line, one cutscene shows the character (who can take on hordes of zombies without flinching) instantly being taken out by some no name NPC, all their equipment taken and thrown into a pit to fight waves of enemies. This is one of the worst game design practices in any game and it makes its appearance here.

Ultimately I found Dead Island to be boring but doable with weak quests. Dying Light has stronger mechanics, better environments and parkour. Yet I found Dead Island to be the better game just because it didn't make all these bad choices, strip you of your skills and through endless waves of zombies at you.
