The actual game to dying light is fun, it feels scary, it's fun to run around and jump around buildings, everything just runs so smoothly and feels fantastic. The following dlc on the other hand, is really boring, feels unfinished, the driving is just annoying which is literally the entire game. It just isn't fun to move around the map because it feels so empty. The following dlc on the other hand, is really boring, feels unfinished, the driving is just annoying which is literally the entire game. It just isn't fun to move around the map because it feels so empty. This game was fun because you could scale buildings and jump around avoiding giant herds of zombies. Now it is just driving around in a cart while you don't feel rushed at all and you are driving through these barren wastelands. I'm sorry but the game simply isn't fun, at least the dlc isn't. The story is fairly interesting and I'm glad to see that they gave you options but that doesn't make up for the poor gameplay. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this game to be full of bad design choices and poor story. The overall concept seems reasonable but no different than most other zombie games. The parkour makes for an interesting twist and when it works, it works well but the game itself is clearly targeted at FPS players with the continually overwhelming combat scenarios. This is where the game breaks down badly. Firstly your stamina is so low, even at high levels, that zombies easily overwhelm you such that you have to keep backtracking to avoid them while your stamina regenerates. Naturally the solution is to not go in to large combat situations. Unfortunately this only works the first 30 seconds of combat. Early areas of the game you can take out a couple of zombies in about 30 seconds. In later areas you run across enemies that can easily take 5 minutes to take down because of their massive health bars, your generally weak weapons and low stamina. About every minute new zombies magically join the fray. Making this even worse is that fast zombies come in every couple of minutes as well. This makes what should have been a simple combat encounter grow out of control quickly and often there is nothing you can do to stop it except run away. This is where the later levels get really bad because more and more missions require you to clear waves of enemies to move on. Additionally the larger enemies have attacks that have such a large 360 radius you cannot avoid getting knocked down even if you run away. This makes these bigger enemies just easier to avoid except in the cases you have to fight them (which is often). This probably sounded good on paper but ends up being bad in implementation.

The RPG elements (because every game has to have them it seems) is mostly useless. I didn't particular find any of the skills overly useful or impactful on the missions. They were just excuses to have you do more.

The continual need to upgrade weapons is good early on but by mid game I wasn't finding any wpns better than what I had so having them unavoidably breaking down seems like a mechanic to add realism over any actual good design decision.

The story itself starts out good but the main character is just a bipolar jerk. Sometimes I killed him just to make myself feel better. Throughout the game there are side quests and almost every time the character was of the "if I get to it" mentality. Yet to the main story characters he seemed almost heroic. This got annoying quickly and made me have no connection with the character irrelevant of what happened to him.

The nightime is supposed to be the scariest and it is but unless you are forced to go out it is just easier to sleep until day. It simply isn't worth the effort. At night comes creatures that can out run you and kill you almost instantly even at high levels. They also seem to be able to detect you from just about anywhere irrrelevant of what the map says. These overpowered enemies aren't worth the time or effort it takes to beat them. In one particular mission you're forced to run through a gauntlet of them which is just plain unbalanced and unfair.

Speaking of unfair the final mission is just garbage. I took a point off for it alone. The entire game your skill in parkour and combat is being honed. In the final level you have to parkour perfectly or you instantly die and have to start the section over. Once you finally make it to the end to face the final boss you're ready to put your combat skills to the test - just to find out it is a QTE that you die if you miss one. So the entire game of honing your skills was completely useless in the end. Who in their right mind thought this was remotely a good idea?

Finally there seems to be a course in bad game design that every game developer has to take. One of the courses is on how to give the player the belief that they are getting better at the game, tougher enemies, better wpns, etc. Then for no reason other than a plot line, one cutscene shows the character (who can take on hordes of zombies without flinching) instantly being taken out by some no name NPC, all their equipment taken and thrown into a pit to fight waves of enemies. This is one of the worst game design practices in any game and it makes its appearance here.

Ultimately I found Dead Island to be boring but doable with weak quests. Dying Light has stronger mechanics, better environments and parkour. Yet I found Dead Island to be the better game just because it didn't make all these bad choices, strip you of your skills and through endless waves of zombies at you.

Checkpoint saving, weapon degradation, and losing exp on death? Inane fetch quest missions? What's not to like? Quite a bit actually.

It is a terrible game waste of time and money. I really hate people's name and accents, saving in this game is a nightmare furthermore there is no logic behind the story, the only good thing about this game killing zombies but after 5 minutes you get bored.

I'm amazed at the positive reviews. Ridden with "busy work" missions, poorly executed parkour and clumsy weapons, plus an awkward interface and linear skill tree, I managed about 30 minutes of increasingly irritating, unsatisfying game play before I had, had enough and uninstalled this one.

Only upside is reasonable graphics but that's hardly a point of difference, these days.

A solid combination of main game and expansion and a great place to start in the survival/horror genres.

In conclusion, Dying Light is a terrifying open-world zombie game with an excellent story, intent on scaring the living hell out of you. The thrill of rotting flesh, blood, guts and quite often my own tears has left me with an ironically refreshing outlook on what a game can be when it truly delivers.

The Following delivers more and better Dying Light. If you wanted more of it, there's no reason why you should try this expansion.
