A bizarre step backwards for the Dying Light franchise. Parkour feels worse than the first, too many mechanics are cribbed verbatim from other games, there very little tension or horror, the previous game's terrible story somehow got even more terrible, and turning the entire experience into a grindy action RPG was simply misguided.

To start with, the RTX implementation is terrible in this game. With RTX on everything is just way too dark, some people will defend this by saying "Night is supposed to be dark", but even in daytime there are huge dark areas. With RTX off, everything looks washed out and terrible.

And then there are the character model shadows, jesus, dead island released over 10 years ago and they're still getting this wrong!!! Your guy walks around with his arms stretched out like Boris Karloff from the 1930's movie Frankenstein!

And finally, the gameplay... it's trash... parkour is fun enough, but it's just another boring bloated open world that isn't exciting to explore and the rewards for doing so are just as uneventful. I'm sorry I spent the money on this game.

Even in the first "tutorial" part of the game - you meet a guy, talk to him - follow him into the next room and he suddenly says: "im going to leave you now, cause someone said to me, if you think someone is suspicious, you must leave them"... he then enters the next room and you both carry on like nothing happened... WTF.

The combat is boring, its swing light attacks - unlock heavy attacks later on - they did try to spice it up with parkour attacks, but you have to block the attacks the perfect time - so all youre doing is waiting for that to happen and then get a few kicks in before youre back to blocking and tapping left mouse.
I loved the first game, but I struggle to see both how this game is in any way an improvement - and how they have worked on it for so long.
Ubisoft pumps **** like this out every year, its the same thing. Copy paste buildings and events and a world that feels dead around those "events"

The first Dying Light managed to get both quality and a good duration. 20 hours of story and if you did extra content (which in the first Dying Light was fun to do) you could easily reach 60 hours of gameplay.

Dying Light 2 presents a story mode that is a little bit longer, but with much less quality. There are many important characters that just appear in little fragments of the story, never to be seen again. The first Dying Light had less important characters but made more use of them, allowing you to actually care about them. Dying light 2 fails exponentially at that, since it doesn't give you enough time with the characters to actually care for them.

The gameplay system is almost the same, but with little improvements (and new bugs, of course).

The graphics are good, but the Vibe is far worse than the first Dying Light, since this had a sad almost dark vibe, and it was scary at night. This Dying Light 2 gives you a Fortnite vibe (even at night), with it's shiny colors everywhere.

There is a ton of repetitive and insubstantial content to do, and you enjoy that type of void content, then by all means buy it, you'll enjoy it.
Me, I always prefer quality over quantity, since time is much more precious than money, and I want to spend it right, and Dying Light 2 fails at that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dying light was one of my favorite games in 2015 and an excellent fresh take on the otherwise, saturated zombie Genre. So it’s very understandable at how excited I was for the follow up sequel to a game I truly loved. After facing numerous delays since it’s announcement back in 2018, we were finally able to play the long awaited sequel, and I have to be honest, this sequel could’ve waited much, much longer!

I have put in around 45 hours and completed my first play through.

This game is marred with a plethora of issues that I will list As the following.
    1. Game progression only stays with the host
    2. Constant disconnects from the host
    3. Multiple times when My frame rate would drop below 20 fps even in the **** cutscenes 4. We would literally get stuck in rooms with sealed doors that are supposed to be open for us to proceed through the story
    4. Numerous crashes at integral parts of the game.
    5. Constantly getting stuck on random objects and wired collision detections
    6. ( my personal favorite) completing various missions only to be greeted by a black screen, when only the music would be playing, prompting us to restart the game sometimes 5-7 times just to get the **** to work right.

And that’s just surface level stuff, not to mention they lack luster story that allows you to (change) certain aspects of the outcome of the game, which I didn’t feel really took advantage of that feature as much as the Devs drummed it up to be. The characters are uninspiring l, with the exception of 2 people in particular, and all in all, is two steps back from what made the original game such a beloved and fan favorite!

Techland…. Please do better! This is Unacceptable

Hours of fun just playing around with the hordes of zombies, pushing them into traps, setting them on fire, kicking them through windows and off rooftops, mowing them down with the vehicle in the DLC. Each weapon felt unique, each swing was satisfying, the way the zombies seemed to react differently to every hit. Of course the story wasn't great but nobody cared, it was good enough to keep you moving through the game.

So what do they decide to do with the sequel? Attempt to turn it into a branching RPG-like story focused game where all your choices will matter, which they seemed to have completely given up on half way through development and just left the barebones of it.

That wouldn't be a problem if they didn't neglect almost everything that made the first game so good, zombies will now play canned animations after every hit before they go ridiculously flying through the air like they've been hit by a truck when they die.

The weapons have lost all their weight and impact, a baseball bat will cut through a crowd of zombies just as easily as a sword will. Even kicking zombies off of rooftops isn't fun anymore because they don't go tumbling off ledges, now they just slide off and fall straight down.

Overall the combat is worse than the second game, although human v human combat is improved it is nothing special. The ragdolling and physics have been massively downgraded, zombies won't even stick to spike traps anymore, they just collapse and die. There are less zombie hordes and they are less fun to kill. Almost all horror aspects of the game have been lost, night time isn't dark, no roaming volatiles and the loot scan ability now reveals every zombie in the area.

For all the focus and marketing around the story it is no better than the first but it is definitely longer, more boring and more irritating. The only improvement is in the parkour but it still gets plenty of things wrong, the ridiculous running animation and Aiden having the same vertical leap as the Mario brothers are the obvious ones.

Dying Light 1 is still the best zombie game, Dying Light 2 feels like a Ubisoft reboot.

Just to preface, this review is coming from someone who is likely in the minority of players but still needs to be voiced nonetheless. This is after 1.05 Patch
Playing this on Ps4 has been abysmal to say the least. There's a lot of bugs. A lot that I can't even find other players talking about yet. This game clearly wasn't tested for co-op. Many of the bugs not only stem from there, they will pretty much break saves on any user in the session. From affecting key items in your inventory, to skipping missions but also reverting you to choices no one ever made, even going as insane as overlapping both worlds like you're watching two dimensions crash.

Now the writing can range on a wide spectrum from really bad cliches and "twists" just to not be predictable, to fairly competent story telling. It can jump the shark at times but it still works when going into fun sequences. What drags the story down the most though is the bugs. There's a bug where audio will cut out and dialogue will skip, not just in conversations but while casually running through the world too. You miss out on any crucial details that are suppose to impact your decisions. A heartwrenching moment can just be totally ruined but magically skipping animations and end with you apologizing over a radio. One of the most despised characters will be the ONLY audio you get. This problem compounds and gets worse as you finish the game. In co-op even the dialogue goes black screen. Heck, they decided opening doors should be a special event when so that means taking the time to load a black screen, miss anything the host is experiencing, then come out 2 minutes later getting beat by NPC's or looking nostalgic at an object with no context.

There's suppose to be this division between saves so your own world doesn't get affected by joining another player, well that doesn't work. I skipped ahead 3 story missions even though I helped a friend at a later point in his game. Its even giving me story missions from choices I never even made. Its hard to even dissect whether the story is an improvement or not when you miss out on so much of it.

About the Parkour, I have to agree with both sides. With the 1st game it was fun, new, but still pretty stiff. Although the stiffness helped you generally stay on track which works for a fresh game emphasizing parkouring in an open world zombie game. In this game things can be fluid, you can combo and constantly run and gradually upgrade yourself to get past obstacles that would impede you early on. The main issue though is your running on a one button system, meaning all your jumping, grabbing, all your normal sequences unrelated to specific actions hinges on that button working. Combine that with how more open ended the parkour is and you create your own obstacles or do things that weren't intended. Sometimes grabbing doesn't work or you climb instead of wallrun. You'll try to escape an area but you instead grab a door hinge and get hit from behind. The stamina system in general is a terrible idea, especially when it comes to towers. Say what you will about Ubisoft game, at least they will flat out tell you you can't unlock specific radio towers without a tool. In DL2, stamina in terms of towers feels like a complete hinderance even though they emphasize the freedom of movement for everything. Sometimes you can actually unlock towers without the required stamina, sometimes you will actually need way more. Grabbing on to objects wastes stamina, jumping from object to object after grabbing wastes a lot of stamina. This works fine when parkouring because your stamina will replenish while running but those towers? It can be insanely difficult to make it to the end or even prevent you from getting there because of the absurd stamina usage. Some of the tower designs are just meant to drain your stamina rather than have any thought into how you're suppose to progress. It becomes a complete chore and shows some of the seems on how they "improved" mechanics from the 1st game, let alone the fact that open world towers are an outdate annoyance and only around 3 games have managed to make them fun

Its insanely frustrating that you can see potential in how well this game could work but clearly needed at least 6 months to back or proper play testing before release. You can see how much love and effort was put into much of this game but maybe with a more nuanced perspective, we could have seen a more complete and fleshed out product. If you just want parkour and busting zombie heads, you can always just pick up the first game. Its cheaper and its properly finished as a working product. And if you're in the majority who is enjoying the game without any technical issues, congrats. Meanwhile there's some of us who pretty much would like a refund because its so bad and I think those people should be heard.

The first game was far far better in those terms. Plus there a tons of bugs and glitches. And why the f does it have Raytracing and DLSS but no HDR?! But even then, some textures look like PS3

The only thing that kept me from refunding the game is the cool gameplay mechanics and the world. This made me turn back to pirating and then buying the game if I like it since I couldn't refund the game after 2 hours anymore. Plus Denuvo kicks you out after 2 hours of play.

Is the game fun? Kind of? As long as you can make fun of it and just follow quests WITH A FRIEND. By yourself? Go play Days Gone or almost any other BETTER open world and/or zombie game.

I also do NOT understand why devs feel the need to add the work f**k into every sentence either. Good writing requires a bigger dictionary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m not sure where to start with the complete and utter failure of this game. I played it on Xbox series X. The game out of the box was filled with buggy glitches. The story was weak and poorly doled out providing neither a good single player experience or a multiplayer experience. The lack of guns really took some of the fun out of a good four player run going after volatiles at night. When fighting mobs at your own level they are extremely block happy and bullet spongy. I’m fairly certain most humans can’t take five to 10 hacks to the head with a machete. There are no good choices and what you do really does not affect the game at all in fact the traps are far less useful than the original game the general storyline felt like they just made a new crane and gave them a new name. This game leaves you upset with poor fight set ups and terrible bugs and generally nothing to do after you’ve been in the game in two days. The sound bug is absolutely terrible and I’ve been forced into animations by story and falling straight through the floor in a building into levels that don’t exist. I hit one of the larger zombies in the head with 57 arrow to the head…. 57 and they are not recoverable. It really feels like they learned nothing from the original game that was so popular and decided to turn and deliver nothing of the choices and alterations that actually affect the game in the final product this is an incredible letdown. I have played the original dying light through it entirely story probably 7 to 10 times and I’ve also done the following three or four and it was excellent this game has none of that creativity or storytelling. The controls are terrible and Jenkee at best I often press the trigger and get no effect jump kicks rarely work and the kick feature which was key in the original game is complete junk . I feel like there is less tactics and creativity in combat even though they added a block feature . It was much easier in the original game two judo throw people without having to block first they sacrifice too much for this one mechanic . They need to fix this game immediately and there are many many quality of life things that need to be adjusted. All the exotics you got are useless because they are out leveled and then they die and cannot be repaired even the most core fantastic thing that they did in dead island they failed to do in dying light two. Give us a workbench to repair our equipment you make us grind for the upgrades of each pattern there is no need to be completely a loser over the equipment when you finally find something you like. Also would not hurt to make away to infuse gear to current level. The other thing is over half The mobs do nothing but reduce your Health and equipment and provide no loot whatsoever. The final fight with waltz was complete and inspired trash. The final project is a re-warmed dinner of all the things you experienced with Kane story no choices are good and everyone you like in the game dies regardless of what you do. The one thing I liked was the added Hulk volatile mode which would be fantastic if you could activate it and has been a complete and utter missed opportunity. The intelligent Hunter was introduced on the following and it makes me sad that this was never followed through one. It would be nice if there was an expansion if you could play Kane as an intelligent volatile who hides himself under masks just as the mother did in the original game . hunter mode at night Old style kane in the day. The series X game is only 35 gigs I mean there’s really nothing to it I don’t know what they did for the last three years Expand

The amount of enjoyment in this game offer is far overshadowed by the actual usability.

The Parkour side of things just makes it frustrating, with often jumping in between the cracks of the game and the constant glitching when I grab a ledge that was not meant to be. Added to this … sometimes jumps and timings require critical timing and accurate button pressing means you come away more annoyed and frustrated. I get they were trying to do something more with the series, but it just feels they released this way too early without addressing the major concerns of their showpiece in this game.
Sad really, and don't get me started on the paraglider. God that unyielding beast is like trying to hang on to bulls balls... and he already woke up in a funny mood this morning. Delays between button presses and actually doing something is not accepted in Gaming. I can already hear how in real life paragliding is blah blah … but I counter that with … dying light world is not set in real life. This is gaming and the difference is so far removed. I want something that works in-game, not real-life experiences … otherwise, I would have taken up paragliding.
After that there is the mountain of conversation… look lady I don’t care about your singing career in the apocalyptic world. Just give me your quest so I can get my points. And after completing … oh yes I so want more conversation that I am not going to remember, perhaps throw in a song too… Good! God! It seems like the developers were all “visual novel” game designers, where every quest proceeds with a whole life story of the NPC before getting the details.
This makes you click violently through all conversations regardless of importance. Then suddenly coming to fork road decisions, and you have not paid attention. Now I have to make a decision on a mountain of text I didn’t read and didn’t care about. I googled the correct choice for the first few … after that, I just wanted to see the world burn. Next time, if you’re going to make us read it all, at least show us boobs!
Then there are a number of smaller things that just pain me, after being wounded deeply by the rest of the game. Some quests completely disappear after I haven’t tracked them, and come back to them later. Parts of the inventory system are also a pain, making the overall stat decisions of armour difficult because you need to switch between multiple screens.
Which comes to the best … and the worse part of the game. The open world Parkour should have been the jewel … which soon becomes the horse apple (think Shawshank Redemption) of the city. It was actually a true pleasure trying to discover the world and figure out ways to climb buildings. One interesting thing … as I scaled up certain ways, I was left with the impression I was actually making my own way up the wall. That my path wasn’t set in stone, I could actually create/cheat my own way up depending on the level of my character's skill. This made it a puzzle, thoroughly enjoyable and exhilarating to reach the top.
But coming down was often met with a splat, metaphorically and figuratively, as those little times when the character world physics glitched or downright refused to respond to the commands … it was far more satisfying to walk away from the game and let Aiden meet the pavement.
Honestly writing this review offered more stress relief than playing DL2. Sad to say as there are some great qualities in this game. The Developers have spoilt their own masterpiece by developing the wrong things in this game.

Where to begin? I think from the fact that the animations in the game, as in 2010, are not realistic, and the game itself is buggy, the raw main character like Mary Sue cannot be defeated, it is impossible to play and the dialogues are wooden additional quests, not thought out and boring, the open world is poor and the artificial intelligence is not alive at 0, the graphics are terrible,Where to begin?

Playing this game really brings a deep sadness to my heart. I really loved the first game despite its flaws, but there is no learning here, no improvement of any kind. Every single annoying aspect of the first game is doubled here... didn't hear the selectively mute zombies creeping up behind you? now there's multiple! didn't like the kung-fu zombies? here's tenfold of them! found the night time exploring annoying? here's 3 howlers per 10squaremeters! The jump button barely responds, the wide axe swings only hit 1 enemy because the hitboxes are as basic as freaking ps1 games.. and so much more stuff that is devolved over the first game; the visuals are worse, its runs worse than the original aswell, and the first map is maybe the most boring map ever created, ALL the buildings are the same, literally there is like 1 church, 1 hospital and 1 water tower and the rest 99% of the city is just the same house copy pasted. The combat is much less responsive than in the original, combined with the awful collision detection it's just tedious. The parkour stuff is still really fun, with some really cool moments, and the soundtrack is totally awesome, like in the first game! Why this game makes me sad is that although the original had some flaws, it also had all the prerequisites to be a 10/10 zombie sandbox game, instead of that promise they doubled absolutely everything that sucked in the first game and made it more repetitive. Despite all my complaints, I initially had fun with Dying Light 2. The first quarter of the game was engaging. I think if the rest of the game played like this, I would have way more positive things to say, but the fact is that it’s just not done. This is clearly an unfinished game mired in mismanagement. I don’t blame the developers at all; the leaders and executives behind this work are responsible. What works here is clean and well done, albeit with some boring AAA niceties. After the first quarter or so, though, the game absolutely falls apart in almost every respect. I’m sad for what was produced here, but if I’m being honest, I’m more sad that I invested nearly thirty hours of my own time into this. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Dying Light 2 has proven to be a brilliant zombie game, thanks to the great parkour and combat mechanics. The story however is a bit flawed due to some really strange twists.

There is fun to be had here, but aside from a few moments of joyous parkour, it's the sort of fun you can have in dozens of other open-world games. There is certainly some added fun in co-op with a couple of friends, but in a world where we get another open-world game every week, I just cannot recommend anyone go out and buy Dying Light 2 at full price. Especially not when it came out right before Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring, both of which look far more promising.
