A bizarre step backwards for the Dying Light franchise. Parkour feels worse than the first, too many mechanics are cribbed verbatim from other games, there very little tension or horror, the previous game's terrible story somehow got even more terrible, and turning the entire experience into a grindy action RPG was simply misguided.

To start with, the RTX implementation is terrible in this game. With RTX on everything is just way too dark, some people will defend this by saying "Night is supposed to be dark", but even in daytime there are huge dark areas. With RTX off, everything looks washed out and terrible.

And then there are the character model shadows, jesus, dead island released over 10 years ago and they're still getting this wrong!!! Your guy walks around with his arms stretched out like Boris Karloff from the 1930's movie Frankenstein!

And finally, the gameplay... it's trash... parkour is fun enough, but it's just another boring bloated open world that isn't exciting to explore and the rewards for doing so are just as uneventful. I'm sorry I spent the money on this game.

Even in the first "tutorial" part of the game - you meet a guy, talk to him - follow him into the next room and he suddenly says: "im going to leave you now, cause someone said to me, if you think someone is suspicious, you must leave them"... he then enters the next room and you both carry on like nothing happened... WTF.

The combat is boring, its swing light attacks - unlock heavy attacks later on - they did try to spice it up with parkour attacks, but you have to block the attacks the perfect time - so all youre doing is waiting for that to happen and then get a few kicks in before youre back to blocking and tapping left mouse.
I loved the first game, but I struggle to see both how this game is in any way an improvement - and how they have worked on it for so long.
Ubisoft pumps **** like this out every year, its the same thing. Copy paste buildings and events and a world that feels dead around those "events"

The first Dying Light managed to get both quality and a good duration. 20 hours of story and if you did extra content (which in the first Dying Light was fun to do) you could easily reach 60 hours of gameplay.

Dying Light 2 presents a story mode that is a little bit longer, but with much less quality. There are many important characters that just appear in little fragments of the story, never to be seen again. The first Dying Light had less important characters but made more use of them, allowing you to actually care about them. Dying light 2 fails exponentially at that, since it doesn't give you enough time with the characters to actually care for them.

The gameplay system is almost the same, but with little improvements (and new bugs, of course).

The graphics are good, but the Vibe is far worse than the first Dying Light, since this had a sad almost dark vibe, and it was scary at night. This Dying Light 2 gives you a Fortnite vibe (even at night), with it's shiny colors everywhere.

There is a ton of repetitive and insubstantial content to do, and you enjoy that type of void content, then by all means buy it, you'll enjoy it.
Me, I always prefer quality over quantity, since time is much more precious than money, and I want to spend it right, and Dying Light 2 fails at that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dying light was one of my favorite games in 2015 and an excellent fresh take on the otherwise, saturated zombie Genre. So it’s very understandable at how excited I was for the follow up sequel to a game I truly loved. After facing numerous delays since it’s announcement back in 2018, we were finally able to play the long awaited sequel, and I have to be honest, this sequel could’ve waited much, much longer!

I have put in around 45 hours and completed my first play through.

This game is marred with a plethora of issues that I will list As the following.
    1. Game progression only stays with the host
    2. Constant disconnects from the host
    3. Multiple times when My frame rate would drop below 20 fps even in the **** cutscenes 4. We would literally get stuck in rooms with sealed doors that are supposed to be open for us to proceed through the story
    4. Numerous crashes at integral parts of the game.
    5. Constantly getting stuck on random objects and wired collision detections
    6. ( my personal favorite) completing various missions only to be greeted by a black screen, when only the music would be playing, prompting us to restart the game sometimes 5-7 times just to get the **** to work right.

And that’s just surface level stuff, not to mention they lack luster story that allows you to (change) certain aspects of the outcome of the game, which I didn’t feel really took advantage of that feature as much as the Devs drummed it up to be. The characters are uninspiring l, with the exception of 2 people in particular, and all in all, is two steps back from what made the original game such a beloved and fan favorite!

Techland…. Please do better! This is Unacceptable

Hours of fun just playing around with the hordes of zombies, pushing them into traps, setting them on fire, kicking them through windows and off rooftops, mowing them down with the vehicle in the DLC. Each weapon felt unique, each swing was satisfying, the way the zombies seemed to react differently to every hit. Of course the story wasn't great but nobody cared, it was good enough to keep you moving through the game.

So what do they decide to do with the sequel? Attempt to turn it into a branching RPG-like story focused game where all your choices will matter, which they seemed to have completely given up on half way through development and just left the barebones of it.

That wouldn't be a problem if they didn't neglect almost everything that made the first game so good, zombies will now play canned animations after every hit before they go ridiculously flying through the air like they've been hit by a truck when they die.

The weapons have lost all their weight and impact, a baseball bat will cut through a crowd of zombies just as easily as a sword will. Even kicking zombies off of rooftops isn't fun anymore because they don't go tumbling off ledges, now they just slide off and fall straight down.

Overall the combat is worse than the second game, although human v human combat is improved it is nothing special. The ragdolling and physics have been massively downgraded, zombies won't even stick to spike traps anymore, they just collapse and die. There are less zombie hordes and they are less fun to kill. Almost all horror aspects of the game have been lost, night time isn't dark, no roaming volatiles and the loot scan ability now reveals every zombie in the area.

For all the focus and marketing around the story it is no better than the first but it is definitely longer, more boring and more irritating. The only improvement is in the parkour but it still gets plenty of things wrong, the ridiculous running animation and Aiden having the same vertical leap as the Mario brothers are the obvious ones.

Dying Light 1 is still the best zombie game, Dying Light 2 feels like a Ubisoft reboot.

Just to preface, this review is coming from someone who is likely in the minority of players but still needs to be voiced nonetheless. This is after 1.05 Patch
Playing this on Ps4 has been abysmal to say the least. There's a lot of bugs. A lot that I can't even find other players talking about yet. This game clearly wasn't tested for co-op. Many of the bugs not only stem from there, they will pretty much break saves on any user in the session. From affecting key items in your inventory, to skipping missions but also reverting you to choices no one ever made, even going as insane as overlapping both worlds like you're watching two dimensions crash.

Now the writing can range on a wide spectrum from really bad cliches and "twists" just to not be predictable, to fairly competent story telling. It can jump the shark at times but it still works when going into fun sequences. What drags the story down the most though is the bugs. There's a bug where audio will cut out and dialogue will skip, not just in conversations but while casually running through the world too. You miss out on any crucial details that are suppose to impact your decisions. A heartwrenching moment can just be totally ruined but magically skipping animations and end with you apologizing over a radio. One of the most despised characters will be the ONLY audio you get. This problem compounds and gets worse as you finish the game. In co-op even the dialogue goes black screen. Heck, they decided opening doors should be a special event when so that means taking the time to load a black screen, miss anything the host is experiencing, then come out 2 minutes later getting beat by NPC's or looking nostalgic at an object with no context.

There's suppose to be this division between saves so your own world doesn't get affected by joining another player, well that doesn't work. I skipped ahead 3 story missions even though I helped a friend at a later point in his game. Its even giving me story missions from choices I never even made. Its hard to even dissect whether the story is an improvement or not when you miss out on so much of it.

About the Parkour, I have to agree with both sides. With the 1st game it was fun, new, but still pretty stiff. Although the stiffness helped you generally stay on track which works for a fresh game emphasizing parkouring in an open world zombie game. In this game things can be fluid, you can combo and constantly run and gradually upgrade yourself to get past obstacles that would impede you early on. The main issue though is your running on a one button system, meaning all your jumping, grabbing, all your normal sequences unrelated to specific actions hinges on that button working. Combine that with how more open ended the parkour is and you create your own obstacles or do things that weren't intended. Sometimes grabbing doesn't work or you climb instead of wallrun. You'll try to escape an area but you instead grab a door hinge and get hit from behind. The stamina system in general is a terrible idea, especially when it comes to towers. Say what you will about Ubisoft game, at least they will flat out tell you you can't unlock specific radio towers without a tool. In DL2, stamina in terms of towers feels like a complete hinderance even though they emphasize the freedom of movement for everything. Sometimes you can actually unlock towers without the required stamina, sometimes you will actually need way more. Grabbing on to objects wastes stamina, jumping from object to object after grabbing wastes a lot of stamina. This works fine when parkouring because your stamina will replenish while running but those towers? It can be insanely difficult to make it to the end or even prevent you from getting there because of the absurd stamina usage. Some of the tower designs are just meant to drain your stamina rather than have any thought into how you're suppose to progress. It becomes a complete chore and shows some of the seems on how they "improved" mechanics from the 1st game, let alone the fact that open world towers are an outdate annoyance and only around 3 games have managed to make them fun

Its insanely frustrating that you can see potential in how well this game could work but clearly needed at least 6 months to back or proper play testing before release. You can see how much love and effort was put into much of this game but maybe with a more nuanced perspective, we could have seen a more complete and fleshed out product. If you just want parkour and busting zombie heads, you can always just pick up the first game. Its cheaper and its properly finished as a working product. And if you're in the majority who is enjoying the game without any technical issues, congrats. Meanwhile there's some of us who pretty much would like a refund because its so bad and I think those people should be heard.

The first game was far far better in those terms. Plus there a tons of bugs and glitches. And why the f does it have Raytracing and DLSS but no HDR?! But even then, some textures look like PS3

The only thing that kept me from refunding the game is the cool gameplay mechanics and the world. This made me turn back to pirating and then buying the game if I like it since I couldn't refund the game after 2 hours anymore. Plus Denuvo kicks you out after 2 hours of play.

Is the game fun? Kind of? As long as you can make fun of it and just follow quests WITH A FRIEND. By yourself? Go play Days Gone or almost any other BETTER open world and/or zombie game.

I also do NOT understand why devs feel the need to add the work f**k into every sentence either. Good writing requires a bigger dictionary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m not sure where to start with the complete and utter failure of this game. I played it on Xbox series X. The game out of the box was filled with buggy glitches. The story was weak and poorly doled out providing neither a good single player experience or a multiplayer experience. The lack of guns really took some of the fun out of a good four player run going after volatiles at night. When fighting mobs at your own level they are extremely block happy and bullet spongy. I’m fairly certain most humans can’t take five to 10 hacks to the head with a machete. There are no good choices and what you do really does not affect the game at all in fact the traps are far less useful than the original game the general storyline felt like they just made a new crane and gave them a new name. This game leaves you upset with poor fight set ups and terrible bugs and generally nothing to do after you’ve been in the game in two days. The sound bug is absolutely terrible and I’ve been forced into animations by story and falling straight through the floor in a building into levels that don’t exist. I hit one of the larger zombies in the head with 57 arrow to the head…. 57 and they are not recoverable. It really feels like they learned nothing from the original game that was so popular and decided to turn and deliver nothing of the choices and alterations that actually affect the game in the final product this is an incredible letdown. I have played the original dying light through it entirely story probably 7 to 10 times and I’ve also done the following three or four and it was excellent this game has none of that creativity or storytelling. The controls are terrible and Jenkee at best I often press the trigger and get no effect jump kicks rarely work and the kick feature which was key in the original game is complete junk . I feel like there is less tactics and creativity in combat even though they added a block feature . It was much easier in the original game two judo throw people without having to block first they sacrifice too much for this one mechanic . They need to fix this game immediately and there are many many quality of life things that need to be adjusted. All the exotics you got are useless because they are out leveled and then they die and cannot be repaired even the most core fantastic thing that they did in dead island they failed to do in dying light two. Give us a workbench to repair our equipment you make us grind for the upgrades of each pattern there is no need to be completely a loser over the equipment when you finally find something you like. Also would not hurt to make away to infuse gear to current level. The other thing is over half The mobs do nothing but reduce your Health and equipment and provide no loot whatsoever. The final fight with waltz was complete and inspired trash. The final project is a re-warmed dinner of all the things you experienced with Kane story no choices are good and everyone you like in the game dies regardless of what you do. The one thing I liked was the added Hulk volatile mode which would be fantastic if you could activate it and has been a complete and utter missed opportunity. The intelligent Hunter was introduced on the following and it makes me sad that this was never followed through one. It would be nice if there was an expansion if you could play Kane as an intelligent volatile who hides himself under masks just as the mother did in the original game . hunter mode at night Old style kane in the day. The Parkour side of things just makes it frustrating, with often jumping in between the cracks of the game and the constant glitching when I grab a ledge that was not meant to be. Added to this … sometimes jumps and timings require critical timing and accurate button pressing means you come away more annoyed and frustrated. I get they were trying to do something more with the series, but it just feels they released this way too early without addressing the major concerns of their showpiece in this game.
Sad really, and don't get me started on the paraglider. God that unyielding beast is like trying to hang on to bulls balls... and he already woke up in a funny mood this morning. Delays between button presses and actually doing something is not accepted in Gaming. I can already hear how in real life paragliding is blah blah … but I counter that with … dying light world is not set in real life. This is gaming and the difference is so far removed. I want something that works in-game, not real-life experiences … otherwise, I would have taken up paragliding.
After that there is the mountain of conversation… look lady I don’t care about your singing career in the apocalyptic world. Just give me your quest so I can get my points. And after completing … oh yes I so want more conversation that I am not going to remember, perhaps throw in a song too… Good! God! It seems like the developers were all “visual novel” game designers, where every quest proceeds with a whole life story of the NPC before getting the details.
This makes you click violently through all conversations regardless of importance. Then suddenly coming to fork road decisions, and you have not paid attention. Now I have to make a decision on a mountain of text I didn’t read and didn’t care about. I googled the correct choice for the first few … after that, I just wanted to see the world burn. Next time, if you’re going to make us read it all, at least show us boobs!
Then there are a number of smaller things that just pain me, after being wounded deeply by the rest of the game. Some quests completely disappear after I haven’t tracked them, and come back to them later. Parts of the inventory system are also a pain, making the overall stat decisions of armour difficult because you need to switch between multiple screens.
Which comes to the best … and the worse part of the game. The open world Parkour should have been the jewel … which soon becomes the horse apple (think Shawshank Redemption) of the city. It was actually a true pleasure trying to discover the world and figure out ways to climb buildings. One interesting thing … as I scaled up certain ways, I was left with the impression I was actually making my own way up the wall. That my path wasn’t set in stone, I could actually create/cheat my own way up depending on the level of my character's skill. This made it a puzzle, thoroughly enjoyable and exhilarating to reach the top.
But coming down was often met with a splat, metaphorically and figuratively, as those little times when the character world physics glitched or downright refused to respond to the commands … it was far more satisfying to walk away from the game and let Aiden meet the pavement.
Honestly writing this review offered more stress relief than playing DL2. Sad to say as there are some great qualities in this game. The Developers have spoilt their own masterpiece by developing the wrong things in this game.

The jump button barely responds, the wide axe swings only hit 1 enemy because the hitboxes are as basic as freaking ps1 games.. and so much more stuff that is devolved over the first game; the visuals are worse, its runs worse than the original aswell, and the first map is maybe the most boring map ever created, ALL the buildings are the same, literally there is like 1 church, 1 hospital and 1 water tower and the rest 99% of the city is just the same house copy pasted. The combat is much less responsive than in the original, combined with the awful collision detection it's just tedious. The parkour stuff is still really fun, with some really cool moments, and the soundtrack is totally awesome, like in the first game! Why this game makes me sad is that although the original had some flaws, it also had all the prerequisites to be a 10/10 zombie sandbox game, instead of that promise they doubled absolutely everything that sucked in the first game and made it more repetitive. I really hate the fact that I don't like the game but it is just so bad. As a big fan of DL1 I was pretty happy to finally play the sequel. However after playing it for around 30 hours I have to say that it is totally underwhelming.

    Movement:
In contrast to what mainstream media is saying I truly don't like the new movement at all. It feels very clumsy unprecise and slow. I get that you have to level up to increase your stamina but even now after I leveled up a lot it still does not feel close as good as the prequel.

    Fighting:
Also fighting is a big downgrade. In DL1 fighting was a very satisfying part of the game. When you hit an enemy your attack had a lot of impact. You were able to aim for particular body parts e.g. breaking legs to make your opponent fall on the ground or instantly go for the neck to cut the zombies head off. Now fighting feels like you are swinging a wooden stick on a huge rock. Enemies don't react as satisfying as they used to. You don't receive as much feedback of what part of the body you've hit anymore, hitboxes are really bad and weapons don't feel unique and strong anymore. There are still mods but they are not as interesting anymore when it comes to names, effects and optical modifications of the weapon. Fighting without a weapon is not really an option anymore. In DL1 you were able to dropkick or kick your enemy on the ground and then use a skill to jump on the enemies head to instantly kill your opponent very effectively and satisfying. The dropkick is also available in the sequel but is not nearly as good as it used to be. I actually had many times where my dropkick directly hit a zombie but had no impact at all. And even if the dropkick knocks down an opponent he will stand up before you can stand up yourself. Kicking is an almost useless skill that doesn't do much anymore. I've never made a zombie enemy fall on the ground with the normal kick in the game. It seems like this is not an option anymore. Overall this reasons made me try to dodge as many fights with zombies as I could and beeing really annoyed when I actually had to fight them. This is a shame if you keep in mind how fun it used to be in the prequel.

    Bugs and glitches:
Another really big part are the bugs. Enemys AI is really bad. Their movement e.g. climbing up vehicles is totally glitched and there are also bugs like dead zombies floating on the ground following you and attacking you and things like that. Coop does work but is also totally bugged. When I see chests to open sometimes my friends don't see them. Enemies are invisible or just standing still for one player while the other one can see them fighting. Parts of the world (e.g. bounce pads) are not visible for some players while others can see them.

    Quests and Characters:
The quests are really really boring and not close as good as masterpieces like the Tolga and Fatin quests. Most of the quests are repetitive and boring and have a seemingly never ending really stupid and unnecessary conversation in it. There are even quests that have no sense at all like a monk that tells you that his fish were stolen but you should not do anything about it and he just wants to talk and thats it - quest done... Another quest was two women who were fighting if they should use water for plants or for washing their hair. You pick one side and thats it. Nothing else. Characters are written very stereotypical without any depth or humour.

    Weird RPG-Features
Another very weird part of the game is the poor try to implement somewhat RPG-elements. You can find clothes, shoes, gloves hats etc. that not only increase your armor but also support other attributes and classes. Yes you heared right. There are different classes now that are not explained or anything but just there. None of my friends were interested to actually read through all of this stuff and wanted to have this much depth in such an uninteresting part of the game that does not fit to the rest of the game at all. Also weapons are not repairable anymore except you put a very expensive upgrade in your weapon you get pretty late in the game.

To me this game is a massive fail and a downgrade in every segment compared to the prequel. It doesn't feel finished and overall many concepts have been implemented in the game that better shouldn't have. Compared to the prequel It lost its great fighting mechanics and its movement. After 30 hours of playing I am still waiting for the fun part of the game. I start to believe I wont find it. As a full price title this does not deserve more than a disapointing 3/10.

Most of these *could* be fixed with patches but due to the 7 years of drama that lead to this I expect it to pull a cyberpunk and basically promise the world and in reality they just do the bare minimum and hope it keeps selling on false promises. My biggest issue with this game is that combat just feels so bad. Its like you're hitting zombies with wet pool noodles. There's no impact, and basically every zombie in the game can take upwards of 5 hits to kill with decent weapons. It's also a surprisingly ugly game. The weapon designs are all just different lumps of metal, character models are just kind of bad and the world is just one big green/brown splodge.

On top of this they launched the game with non-accessible features FORCED ON, like chromatic aberration and a ridiculous amount head bob. Unacceptable at this point to not have options to turn these off. I had to turn to mods on launch day to even be able to play the damn thing.

In summation, I genuinely believe nearly every aspect of this game is a downgrade from the first. And areas where its not necessarily a downgrade, they didn't learn from the first. Like the god awful story and writing, which is as laughably bad as the first, but doesn't have the fun gameplay to carry it. Just don't buy it...

My personal worst is the headbobbing and constant movement of the camera. Even in Idle the picture moves with the breathing and in combat the cam is all over the place, it seems to be moving with any movement the head of the protagonist does.

The story feels uninterseting and doesnt really add up even at the very first few bits you get out of it. Too much Deus ex Machina already in the first conversation... ugh.

I cant quite put my finger on it, but somethings weird with the graphics (Played around with FOV, but the movement in the world never felt real or natural). Aidens wooden movement, that made me want to break his arms to get them out of the screen didnt help, either.

The survivors sense is quite ackward as well. It highlights items for like 3 seconds and then you can interact with them anymore, unless you click again. So you are constantly spamming it - first WTF moment.

I have no Idea, how one could come to the conclusion that a Stamina system in a game, thats massively depending on the smooth movment might add to the experience. Right at the beginning of the tutorial (after spike) you have to climb a ledge and do a jump, if you miss the first time, you either wait for the stamina to replenish or you will fall off the ladder for running out of it - 10 mins in and I already hated the game for that.

Off we go to the next stop on the tutorial. Survival sense is worthy of superman, i can see verything behind every wall....no more careful epxloring required - I know where you are... meh

Didnt notice the weirdness of fighting yet, cause sleeky me crept up on them and enjoyed the ever repeating takedown animation.

Every repeating micros stutters from probably Denuvo also become more noticable. But as any pickcing up also stops you for a quick and bad animation, its less anyoing.

Every time you search, Aiden is performing so kind of voodoo speel on the thing, so you get better stuff, i suppose. Looks silly, gets old fast.

Next stop is an old houe, you search it - empty. But as soon as you jump out of the window, a dozen zombies spawns and crawls out of thin air. Another cringe and then the first fight.

Not only are is my survival sense superhuman, I also possess enough power to let every monster I kill fly away like a balloon hit with a racket. Unless they fall of a cliff, then they stand up again to play there proper death animation. Hitting them has that balloony feeling as well, resulting in a very unsatisfying feeling.

I carried my unsatisfied feelings down the next hill, over the lake and zoomed thorugh a bunsh of zombies before entering the subways for some more cringy dialog and the final decision, that this isnt for me to play.

I loved dying light one pretty much as I dislike this new installment, which was a huge disappointment from the first frame onward

    TL;DR:

    Bad animations
Story seems to have been written by a child
Fighting is ragdoll bashing with bad hit feedback and ridicuolos physics
    Headbobbing/Camera all over the place
Stamina System drains the fun out of parkour
    Controls sometimes dont respond

What is missing is the atmosphere of being stuck in the first part, in which the player was afraid to fall from the car straight into the hands of the hungry undead. Here? You don't feel this fear at all. The product, however, has quite a lot left from the first game in the universe, but these are mainly stupid and not logical mechanic-gameplay systems. Despite all this, there is one thing in the game. This is parkour. DL2 could be a simulator of running around an apocalyptic city, because it does it nicely and definitely better than an action horror movie, but even this way of spending time in the game is limited and simply bored with time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First time playing games from these devs. I am unlikely to get another one. It has potential, it could be fun BUT not only is the plot a bit silly, so much of the gameplay is very very poor. Your guy is supposed to be a parkour guru right? Wrong. He runs out of energy before he finishes climbing a ladder and then just lets go and falls into zombies. A lot of the things you're supposed to be able to climb but not, our guy sort of gives it a wee go and then kind of dangles about for a while until he is eaten by zombies. Speaking of zombies, they are EVERYWHERE! What so this city didn't think ever about trying to clear some places out a bit, build better walls and barricades, develop weapons that can do more than hit one at a time. Why are there no guns anywhere? Some stupid narrative about a massacre when people had to give their guns up is beyond stupid. Many people would have hidden them. The army convoys would have them, they would be ALL OVER THE PLACE. All types of firearms would be. So too body armour, helmets and most likely working vehicles- generators don't seem to have a problem. Having only a few minutes in the dark is plain stupid. I am getting seriously tired of apparent big games being so stupid and poor. I'm tired of critics being paid off. I'm tired of the gaming industry making a hash out of everything. IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD LITERALLY NOBODY GIVES A FLYING CRAP ABOUT YOUR GAY PRIDE FLAGS. Are you SERIOUS!!! Not a single French flag in sight but you know, the international flag of rainbow is here to stay. All of that crap would disappear in the face of just trying to NOT BE EATEN. Why is everybody such a dick? Gangs wandering the streets out to just murder somebody. They don't seem to mind the zombies literally 5 metres away either. COME ON GUYS!!! What a severe waste of money, wish I could refund it but a crap review will have to do. This is now the fourth 'big' game I have bought recently which has been an almost complete joke. Far out, there was a time where I didn't have enough money to get all the good games I wanted and now, I spend ages trying to find one and when I do, its this crap. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

From writing standpoint alone, Days Gone is miles ahead of this game. Days Gone has more depth, more natural dialogue, more interesting world design, better graphics and so on. Why i'm even mentioning Days Gone is the fact how big downgrade Days Gone 2 really is in terms of open world zombie games over the years. It's even worse than DL1 in many areas.

Without the major problems this would probably get an 8. It is quite fun for the first 40 hours before the deja vu and "ubisoftasis" repeating structure sets in where you just do the same thing over and over again with copy paste clutter missions.

However the reason I give this a 0 is because the game is completely unplayable without using mods to remove the horrendous HUD clutter in this game. It is probably the worst I have seen in a very long time and the HUD option "Immersive" is pathetic and like a slap in the face. There is nothing "immersive" about it and there are icons EVERYWHERE. The people in charge of the interface should get fired on the spot. You cant' even see at times because there is so much HUD clutter everywhere.
I finally could play the game though after finding modders who have removed the HUD and the xray eyes etc. I can't review a game that is fixed by modders though but have to review it as it is when buying.

Apart from the horrendous HUD there are also many other big problems with the game. For example:

    - Copy paste interiors that all look identical. They are complete 1:1 copy paste of one location to the next. Even the big GRE missions you go on are completely identical. Exteriors look great, but as soon as you get indoors it is like the graphics downgrades 10-15 years and you get a serious sense of deja vu.

    - Controls often feel unresponsive in some ways.

    - Even on hard difficulty the game is so easy you will be bored. It is like it was made for kids. Also many overpowered mechanics, especially the crossbow that makes every other weapon in the game obsolete.

    - Some of the most important "choices" in the game are made for you

    - Picking faction does not really have any effect on the game.

    - Dying has no consequence

    - Zombies feel more like an annoyance than something you are afraid off like in the first game. If you don't mod away the xray vision also then there is zero suspense since you can see every enemy through walls

    - Too many and respawning loot everywhere making loot locations pointless

When I heard we were finally going to get DL2, I was stoked, I thought Techland would smooth out the combat and give us a compelling story that the first game truly deserved, and when I heard Chris Avellone (Fallout New Vegas & Witcher 3) was on board, I thought this was it, this game will go from great to phenomenal. 2018 E3 rolls around and gives us a 40 minute demo showing some incredible visuals, decent combat, some brand new story branching elements, and even some map changes depending on your "choices".

Hey, to any gamer out there that has paid attention to the industry in the last 7 years... guess what happened next? 2018 E3 Trailer was a lie, the project turned into a woke political fest, there was major infighting during the development, the game was being overhauled, Avellone was fired for sexual misconduct allegations from 8 years prior, the game fell into development hell, came back out, got re-worked, has no sense of direction, release date pushed back a year or more, and finally gets this release. Do you still think it has a chance at being good?

No, poor optimization, terrible writing, keybinding issues, quest breaking bugs, co-op doesn't work for quite a few people, cross-play which was promised initially is out, visuals are hit and miss, your choices do not matter, the factions are boring, the combat is the same as DL1, the characters are all uninteresting, the stay human mechanic is just annoying, and sadly the game is just not fun.

DL1 is a superior experience to this game, so if you have not played that, go back and grab that on sale. The graphics are still solid and the gameplay is actually enjoyable. DL2 is DL1 without any fun. I miss the old grappling hook and swinging around like spider-man, I enjoyed having firearms to ignite barrels with from afar, I thoroughly enjoyed the night-time challenge with the volatiles and the grappling hook parkour, it was fun.

What happened? My guess is the usual culprit, Politics. Techland hired a bunch of activists who were devoid of talent and were not competent enough to produce a title worth playing. They complained about a "hostile" and "toxic" work environment and wanted to oust the CEO and lead writer.

Avellone was dismissed after an allegation of sexual misconduct in 2012 (8 years prior to allegation), which was filed by a friend of one of his former partners who was upset about a breakup in 2018? Avellone also countersued the party for false accusations as the claims were never substantiated and he lost work over the last 2 years as a result. Sounds to me like they were lying, just to get him removed.

Marchewka, Techland's CEO, seems like a bit of an "obtuse" boss, but nothing out of the ordinary to be honest. If these people did not want to work there, they could have just quit, Techland is its own entity, they are not beholden to shareholders like most other developers are, so time crunch, muzzled creativity, and employee retention should not be an issue at all. These employees clearly had an agenda, and could not be satiated.

Point is, you cannot reboot your game, mid-development cycle, and release a half-baked game that is clearly broken from launch and then patch your way to a completed product over time, that is called "early-access", and on top of that, they have the gall to sell a $129.99 [CAD] deluxe edition with skins. The Denuvo inclusion makes sense now, I would be very afraid of piracy if I released a game in this state.

Metacritic can allow a million bots to throw 10/10 ratings, but this is not a complete game and it is an insult to fans of the first game. I would give it a 2, but bots gonna bot, so here's a fresh zero. This is not the same Techland from 2015. Politics has reared its head again and destroyed another franchise. Shocker.

Broken and glitchy game. I like some parts, but overall it's not very enjoyable.

It doesn't matter how good is the game you've made. You make a deal with Denuvo - you're bad for business. Guess what, pirates aren't your customers. You gain nothing. You only make your game run worse than it should. For the game itself, sorry to break it for you, the first one was better.

The game can't even come near the first one. The game mechanics feel cheap. The story is straight trash, I am really disappointed. The people who gave this game 10 is clearly paid including all the "critics",

Despite all my complaints, I initially had fun with Dying Light 2. The first quarter of the game was engaging. I think if the rest of the game played like this, I would have way more positive things to say, but the fact is that it’s just not done. This is clearly an unfinished game mired in mismanagement. I don’t blame the developers at all; the leaders and executives behind this work are responsible. What works here is clean and well done, albeit with some boring AAA niceties. After the first quarter or so, though, the game absolutely falls apart in almost every respect. I’m sad for what was produced here, but if I’m being honest, I’m more sad that I invested nearly thirty hours of my own time into this. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Dying Light 2 has proven to be a brilliant zombie game, thanks to the great parkour and combat mechanics. The story however is a bit flawed due to some really strange twists.

There is fun to be had here, but aside from a few moments of joyous parkour, it's the sort of fun you can have in dozens of other open-world games. There is certainly some added fun in co-op with a couple of friends, but in a world where we get another open-world game every week, I just cannot recommend anyone go out and buy Dying Light 2 at full price. Especially not when it came out right before Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring, both of which look far more promising.
