Nov 17, 2024It’s goofy, and earnest, and consciously inclusive in a way that makes me, a queer person, scared to talk about it on the internet (even after all these years). It’s bold, and comfortable in itself, and even in its weaker moments, It does feel different to the past games, but for me, it’s a good kind of different.

Oct 28, 2024With Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I basically got exactly what I had hoped for from a sequel to Inquisition. An epic story about elven gods, the end of the world and the previously little-explored nations in the north of Thedas. Plus a wonderful cast of companions who all grew on me in their own way. All of this, embedded in the same attention to detail that made Inquisition one of my favorite games. Rounded off with very satisfying gameplay that works wonderfully in its mechanics. I simply had a fantastic time with Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Instead, Veilguard is a great mission-based RPGs with a memorable story that will leave Dragon Age fans enthralled by the revelations, an awesome combat system that perfectly blends action and tactics, and lots of loot and secrets to uncover through its 80-hour playthrough.

Jan 31, 2025Overall, the core mechanics were engaging and the world was enchanting enough to keep me coming back night after night. Even when it suffers from subpar writing or when the boss fights are a little too breezy, the dynamic, well-balanced combat, effective worldbuilding and ability to immerse the player in their role as the leader of a diverse group of adventurers who make choices that matter will appeal to a wide variety of gamers. There is much to do, much to say and much to discover around every corner in the world of Thedas.

There’s a lot to like about The Veilguard, but there are a few bumps in the road. For older Dragon Age fans, it might feel odd to be planted in this mostly dungeon-based mission corridor, but the experience never feels like a grind and is mostly BioWare playing it safe.

The history of the world of Thedas mixes with the history of Solas and our companions, in a plot that seems unappealing at first, but blossoms in the middle of the game. With breathtaking scenery and a very competent combat system, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is yet another fantastic RPG in a big year for fans of the genre.

It's a great adventure with accessible, polished and well-thought-out content, even if the freedom isn't there. This is obviously a major flaw for an RPG, and one that is likely to anger many players. Ironically, in seeking to be open-ended at all costs, while avoiding taking risks, the game commits some major clumsiness in terms of writing. Veilguard is much better than the studio's previous titles, but it still lacks the arguments capable of reconciling it with gamers.

While far removed in many ways from the fantasy franchise I grew up loving, Dragon Age: The Veilguard takes its place by prior adventures in Thedas with pride. Like the Hero of Ferelden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor before them, Rook shows that Dragon Age isn't out of tricks just yet.

The main quest and especially the final chapters deliver plenty of excitement. the characters’ narratives lack intrigue, and there are aspects that may disappoint fans of the series.

It is immediately clear how complex the project was and how the videogame world has changed over time. With a good combat system, a convincing narrative and a good development of the relationships with the other characters, on some points it does not fully succeed in reaching the objective. I admit that so many words are actually too many, and I actually hope that someone has gotten to the end... but there really could not be another analysis for such a delicate work. Sales will decide whether it will be the actual relaunch of the series. In addition, of course, to us players of the franchise.

Oct 28, 2024There is so much else that is impressive and charming about Veilguard. The absurdly elaborate and expensive finales that cap off companion questlines; lavish, unique areas rolled out for a visit or two then never again. How story moments of real threat and menace stopped me in my tracks, because it turned out that Bioware wasn’t disinterested in this stuff, just saving it for when it really counted. The fantastic prose and worldbuilding in the huge glossary, filled as you find notes and items.
