Completely masterpiece. True old school, hight speed arena shooter with amazing levels design. But beware - only ULTRA VIOLENCE and NIGHTMARE are fun, other diff levels are completely useless for my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This looks and feels like a real successor to the 23-year-old Doom. Forget Doom 3 and its rewriting the rule book, this game goes back to basics and does it in style.

The core gameplay is exactly the same as it was in the original - large, rambling maps chopped up into different areas, with coloured keycards and switches (along with "rip the arm off some guy" type updates - essentially, following the Doom Bible from 1992!)

All the weapons you'd expect are there and although there are all sorts of extra customisation options you don't have to use them; you can use number buttons to select the weapons (5 is still the rocket launcher, just as it was in the original) and unlike the multiplayer mode you can carry several at once.

The action is fast, it's furious and as gory as ever (gibbing enemies never looked so good). There have been some mechanic changes (as in the chainsaw uses fuel and grants ammo when you chainsaw a monster to death), but the overall look and feel is unmistakeably Doom.

As someone who played the original and Doom 2 to death as a teenager, words can't explain how delighted I am to see the game brought bang up-to-date. As an added bonus, after pulling a certain lever I found a direct passageway back to a (somewhat clunky) chunk of the original Doom... complete with bitmap pickup icons and the original soundtrack, as played on a decent MIDI card. Yes, the textures were wonky, there were no lighting effects (it's darned hard to do with modern engines, the Doom engine was much simpler) but wow, it was nice to see. It also carries on the tradition from Doom 2, which had a Wolfenstein 3D level in it...

The deathmatch side of things is expanded greatly from the beta and the matchmaking system is fair - if you get pummelled and everyone's up for another match, it'll swap players around to make things more equal. It feels quite cut-down compared to the single-player mode, what with the loadouts and all, but it's not a bad game - feels more like Quake 3 than the original Doom, however.

I'd say this is a really, really good single-player shooter - it's a true sequel to one of the best-loved PC games of all time. The deathmatch side of things isn't quite as good, IMO, but I bought this game for the single-player game. Several hours in, I'm not disappointed.

Believe the hype...it's Doom! The Single-player is visceral and immediate. The soundtrack is like Meshuggah and Nine Inch Nails did a record together. If you are the one to topple the demon then you can become the demon and essentially carry your team. It becomes a battle of "Holy crap, kill the giant thing" "Okay, now I'm the giant demon, kill everyone!"

And last and certainly not least, the Snapmap mode. On day one there are Doom tribute levels made, custom horde modes, survival challenges just goes on and on. Imagine a Doom game that offers the ease and power of Super Mario Maker with almost the same idea, anyone can share and play anyone else's content. Could be a new custom mode or a crazy map. I found all of this on day one...what will be out a week from now.

Do not sleep on this game. If you are a FPS fan, a Doom fan or just a fan of brutal violent video games. This is the Doom we have all been waiting for.

Stop whining about two weapons at a time, choose your battles people. You've been begging for a new Doom game and I'm sorry Doom 3 wasn't it. This. One. Is. Doom.

Quite possibly the best Arcade FPS I have ever played. Very well optimised.

I am running 2560x1440 with SLI GTX 970, running Ultra, with everything maxed a=out and getting a good 60-70 fps - anti-aliasing on max as well! i52500k, not clocked.

The gameplay reminds me more of Quake.

    I loved Quake!

    Multiplayer is hectic :)

If you're into intricate stories and cinematics, this isn't your game. If you're into fast and furious gameplay, tight controls, exploration, and possibly industrial rock, this is DEFINITELY for you! No scopes, no chest-high walls, no cover-based mechanics - you run, you shoot, sometimes you jump, and even though that sounds simple, the Devil's in the details - literally. Enemy variations keep combat entertaining throughout the game, and the way new enemies are introduced - sometimes by surprise, sometimes as "bosses" of sorts until you realize there's three of them in one place - is just perfectly-paced.

All the new bells and whistles on top of what made the original DOOM games so good are nice, too - the lore stuff is really interesting, albeit tongue-in-cheek at all times, the weapon upgrades are nice because they're only for your alt-fire (therefore guns aren't underpowered when you first find them), the trials to get runes (a few stages in) often have an outside-the-box design to them, and the voice acting surprisingly doesn't get in the way - often because Doomguy kicks something and the game moves on, which is a nice touch.

I'd definitely recommend Doom for its single-player alone. Try SnapMap, it's interesting, and maybe don't even get into multiplayer, but it's worth the price for the campaign alone.

You don't reload, you don't take cover, and you move very fast. Combat is fun and skillful, as you can dodge projectiles and demons while keeping your gun on target. There are many different demons types, and some guns work better against other demons. This adds a different layer of variety, forcing the player to switch up the play-style to take down enemies.

The progression system in campaign is fun. It adds new utilities to guns which can be applied to numerous situations, player abilities which can be unlocked in whichever order the player chooses. You can also increase health, armor, or ammo by finding Argent Energy capsules, provided you actually find them. That brings me to secrets. The campaign map design is awesome, and there are multiple secrets on the levels. This adds a layer of exploration not seen in most linear shooters today.

There are five different difficulties to choose from in campaign. Those who say that the game is too easy have obviously not tried the game on Nightmare or Ultra-Nightmare. These are the hardest difficulties, with Ultra-Nightmare sending you back to the beginning if you die ONCE. There's rarely a dull moment, especially when playing on Nightmare. Constant action with minuscule breaks in between.

Multiplayer is fun. I was hoping for an arena style shooter like Quake or UT, but instead we have loadouts. The game is balanced for the most part, with no gun being terribly overpowered. There is a TON of customization. You can customize your guns with colors and patterns, adjust scratch marks and dirt on armor and guns, and there are a lot of armor pieces to choose from. Gameplay wise, the multiplayer is different from shooters today in the sense of how it plays. It does not play like Halo, Gears of War, or Call of Duty. It feels more like Quake or UT.

TL;DR - Campaign is awesome 10/10 but multiplayer is about a 7/10. Buy this game!

The core mechanics—fast-paced combat, an array of kickass weapons, and exploration puzzles—are all reminiscent of their predecessor. There are also a ton of new elements that improve the experience. Each level now shows you which collectibles you still need, which turns hunting them down into a fun side quest instead of a chore. The 3D map is one of the simplest to use that I've ever seen, and the upgrade system focuses on customizing play style, rather than forcing a grind just to keep up with increasingly higher-level baddies. Glory Kills are not only a visual flourish, but it can actually aid your survival, dropping crucial items from enemies when you need it. Best of all, the fan favorite weapons like the chainsaw and the BFG-9000 (oh, yes) are given priority status with special ammo reserves and bonuses associated with using them. The incentive to use these weapons, and to use them strategically, has dramatically improved.

For those who haven't played the original, it might be a little harder to fall in love, but not impossibly so. While the game excels at combat, the story lacks compared to what we've come to expect from most shooters. Fortunately, the story stays out of your way almost entirely, except for the occasional unskippable scripted in-game scene. In fact, your character often seems as impatient as you are to get back to the combat, regularly ignoring the other characters or choosing violent solutions instead of politely following orders.

The selection of guns may also feel lackluster to veterans of the modern shooter genre. While this game builds on the core set of Doom weapons, the shooter world at large is used to this same selection (perhaps partly due to Doom's influence) already, and them some. Compared to something like Bioshock or Warframe where you have an array of weapons with superpowers on top of it, Doom feels fairly standard. There's also very little in terms of in-world objects like turrets, vehicles, or any of the other extras that newer games have trained us to expect. You can occasionally find powerups, which are always fun—particularly when Berserk lets you rip open large enemies with your bare hands—but that's about it.

In some areas, Doom deviates from the modern mainstream in a good way. Many shooters try so hard to make their level design feel natural that they lose an element of adventure. Doom does no such thing. In one particularly incredible level, you have to scale the world's most impractical and pointless tower. Platforms move and rotate with little rhyme or reason that would make sense in reality, but as a level, it's one of the most fun (and occasionally terrifying) areas. Once again, Doom focuses less on being realistic or fitting in with the rest of the genre and more on making a fun world to blow stuff up in.

I mention none of these differences as deficiencies, but rather for context. Doom focus on two things—combat and exploration—and does them both exceedingly well. There's something to be said about a game that doesn't try to be too many things or cram in a bunch of needless crap just to "Me too!" the rest of the gaming industry. If you're looking for another Halo or Destiny, you're not going to find it here. Instead, Doom is a loving tribute to a simpler time where you didn't need an elaborate story or feigned "realism" to enjoy shooting bad guys.

Awesome game. The only thing that would make it better is to change the music. The music is cheesy rock. Get with Rob Zombie or Trent Reznor and get some kick ass music for the battles. Right now, that is only thing that keeps this from being a 10 review.

Singleplayer: The best FPS combat in years that knows what it wants and couples it with exploration and story in a manner that's exactly right.
Multiplayer: Why loadouts? It ruins the awesomeness of weapon switching and adaptation that makes singleplayer combat so amazing. Had the combat been 1:1 with SP it would be a solid 10.

For example, I got a crash within 3 hours of playing, which was annoying. Also, this game is **** CONFUSING. About half of the time playing, I have no idea where to go or what the hell I am supposed to do. In this one part, you have to use a hand you found for an ID scanner, which opens a door blocked by fire to fight one of those things you rip the heart out of. However, I swear I never saw the ID scanner when I tried finding it. After quitting the game and going back to the same area, THEN I see it. I wonder if this is a glitch because I spent nearly 30 minutes trying to find the damn thing. However, those are my only complaints. The gameplay is extremely fun, where you shoot a demon a bit and then crush, smash, or rip off his head. It feels so satisfying, as well as extremely gory. I have not touched multiplayer, but from what I played from the beta, it seems like it will be something that most may ignore or may only try for a few minutes. I have no idea what snapmap is, so my review is basically single player. I am not trying to be funny when I say within 20 seconds of starting the game, you are given a gun and are fighting demons. This game is extremely fast paced, except in for some moments. Also, DO NOT bother with walkthroughs. Remember about the ID from earlier, I never found that part. I feel like it would ruin the fun as well, so do not bother. In fact, DO NOT watch and gameplay videos, instead, buy the game. Trust me when I say it is worth it. Expand

The single player has almost all of the elements that made the original Doom games great, while adding a ton more content and loads of variety.

What makes this game incredible is just how fast and intense it is. There is nothing I can think of on the market that has as much pure fun factor as this game. It's challenging, it's full of secrets and upgrades, and each level has a ton of replayablity because of it. The upgrade system for your suit and weapons is extremely intutive and lets you play the game in many different ways.

If you're the type of person that's looking for a challenge, try Ultra Nightmare mode, no check points what so ever, even for a Doom vet like me this might be impossibly hard (in a good way).

The game also runs brilliantly on my system, even without SLI support at launch (only negative I can think of). I'm getting silky smooth 60 fps @ 2560x1440, and the game looks incredible. Not only that but they gave the PC users a bunch of customizations that we've all been asking for, something that I greatly appreciate.

As for the multiplayer, the default MP is pretty fun but extremely casual. What I consider to be the actual MP experience comes via SnapMap. Although it's limited to only 4 players as of writing this, the potential to make games for almost any type of person will be nearly endless. Want demon runes and cards off? No problem. Want classic Doom style maps? No problem. Want gun pick ups instead of load outs? No problem! Want co-op missions or single player like experiences? No problem! Even if you don't like the default MP you'll easily get your moneys worth out of SnapMap.
