But, unfortunately, the game itself really does warrant such a low score. It's without doubt one of the great gaming disappointments of recent years. Why? Well, to sum it up - the game feels like it has no soul, it is an alarmingly empty and shallow experience (even in multiplayer) that feels like some sort of bizarre on rails clicking 'experience' (I hesitate to even call it a game because it genuinely doesn't even feel like one). While the first two games were also clickfests, they were great because they had a great amount of character - they were immersive experiences that allowed you to feel your character's progression in the world and feel genuinely excited at the prospect of awesome loot. D3 is just weird to play because for some reason Blizzard have stripped out ALL forms of character customisation and you are just playing an empty shell of a character that looks and plays like every other player out there. This combined with the child-like difficulty level of the game on normal (which you are forced to play through) and the ridiculously high drop rate on blue and yellow items means that loot is just nothing more than generic text. I can't associate any fun at all with anything in this game - it is so empty it is scary. I am actually surprised and shocked that Blizzard put out a game this bad with their usual standards of quality.
Sadly this game is being torn apart by the general public and fanbase and rightfully so.

Well, Blizzard should first fix its servers before selling the game. Apparently, they learnt nothing from the stress test. On a side note, always on DRM and auction house with real money, conveys a lot about Blizzard's greed.

Not only do you reuire a constant connection to the internet, every action has to be sent to an online server. So if you have a poor internet connection, or a horrid one, like satelite, be prepared to wait two full seconds between all your actions. Say for example, begining an attack, and it going to the server, and coming back, then the attack happening.

    Overall, way below expectations.

hmmm 88/100 critic and 3.7 user, this is obviously because of the servers. BUT, Diablo 3 is actually a sub-par game. It didn't go through as what it was meant to be, if it takes a game company 11 years to develop they obviously had no passion for making the game, and it shows

Okay, let's preface this right. I've never owned a Blizzard game. I really like hack n slash rpgs like this though. I've logged many hours of torchlight and titan's quest. Diablo 2 was before my time. I had some old school friends that raved about it and they hyped up Diablo 3 for years before it ended up being released. Buying it then was a natural choice. I like the genre, friends raved about D2, everybody was excited about D3. So I preordered D3 a week before its release date.
I must say this game is genuinely disappointing. The graphics are bad. I'd say they are worse than Torchlight 1 and on par with Titan's Quest. While I'm not a complete graphic snob, I must say I didn't build an overclocked expensive PC for lame graphics. I have no clue why these graphics are so bad. It isn't that the environments are draw poorly, they are not. I feel real thinking went into the design of the graphics, but the graphics themselves are not great. The sound is not amazing either. While it isn't bad per se, it isn't great either. I feel the sound is just average and not great in any way.
The voice acting is definitely below average. I seriously think you could mic me up and I could do a better job with it in one day. The game play itself is rather dumbed down. I really liked in Torchlight being able to assign points to 3 different skill trees. It let me custom build my warrior. This game is not like that. Once a Barbarian is level 5, he unlocks the same skill every time. There are few choices about your build. You can eventually use different skills in the slots, but only after they are unlocked in a uniform, boring fashion.
The story line isn't really that good, but honestly I have trouble faulting them too much on this aspect, as all games from this genre struggle to make the plot meaningful. I would say I thought the cut scenes were amazing (but few) and in general the story line is completely linear. Too damn linear. You can't even get confused or sidetracked, which seems lame.
Having to play online even in single player mode is a negative in my opinion. They end up punishing all the people that bought the game just in case somebody somewhere is dishonest. So now I'll have to be completely inconvenienced each time I play this game for life to teach somebody else a lesson. I defy you to provide another example in the free market of a company treating their paying customers this way.

I'm still playing this game. Now that I own it, I will certainly play it. If I had known the game was going to be such a disappointment, I would have never bothered with it. I feel like Torchlight 1 is a better game than this. They really, really let me down. As a first time customer of Blizzard, I can assure you I would not buy another game from them. I will, however, give Torchlight 2 a whirl.

I've been burned multiple times by server outages and the classes all play the same. This game is all about loot and DPS and loot is made a little redundant by the Auction house having so many readily available items. I really thought Blizzard was a prove resource that always made dynamite sequels, turns out they really dropped the ball on this one.

So, looks like Blizzard *can't* work as a division of Activision. I was willing to see past the tired, rehashed look of Starcraft II - hey, the cut scenes are great, and there's a lot of interactive toys to play with between the missions that look like they were pulled almost directly from the original Starcraft. I was willing to see past the tired, rehashed look of Starcraft II - hey, the cut scenes are great, and there's a lot of interactive toys to play with between the missions that look like they were pulled almost directly from the original Starcraft. But I just can't find anything in Diablo III that would make it worth the 10-year wait, let alone the $60 price tag.

So, what's so wrong with Diablo III? Well, pretty much everything:

    * The graphics are pretty bad; even the "high quality" textures look like something from the original Diablo, the skew perspective means your character is pretty much guaranteed to be hidden from you at least part of the time (as are enemies and loot), and the gamma correction gives you a choice between "too dark to see anything" and "too dark to be playable with a light on in the room".

    * Gameplay is repetitive and dull. It's a clickfest, pure and simple. Click here, click there, kill an enemy, pick up some loot. Lather - rinse - repeat. Oh look! A new level... that's pretty much the same as the level you just finished...

    * Difficulty leveling is so badly broken it would be funny, if it weren't so tragic. After a long boring slog through hordes of enemies who couldn't harm you if you were to lie down and take a nap, you get to uberboss, who coughs and you fall over dead.

    * I can't tell if the soundtrack composer came from a background of 1970's horror flicks, and wanted to try composing for porn, or if they came from 1970's porn flicks, and wanted to compose for horror movies.

    * It's a client-server game, but Blizzard is only shipping the client. So, in addition to crappy graphics, crappy gameplay, and crappy music, you also get crappy lag, crappy disconnects, and truly crappy uptime stats. And forget playing unless you have a low-latency broadband connection. Even with a cable modem, you can expect stutters and random teleports.

    * It's a network-only game with no true single player mode, but Blizzard didn't include voice chat. Dubya tee ef?

Suffice it to say, this will be the last $60 Blizzard ever gets from me.

Right from the start of pre-ordering the game, I had to queue 6 hours just to collect a game i paid for months ago, i did not appreciate the fact distributors(Asiasoft) were making use of us as free-publicity / marketing stunt. While some may say this is not controlled by Blizzard, i say Blizzard shld pick better distributors. When I finally got home and tried to install, i had the "stuck at updating file issue" (great i can't even get the game to install). After spending additional hours of research, and getting the game installed, got the client up, clicked launch, and wow i got the "stuck at launching" problem. After another few hours spent researching on how to get past this problem, finally got into the game, played for a few minutes and bam ERROR 37. So after spending an arduous amount of time playing / dc-ing, i had a shock the game was over so quickly due to lack of content and reeled from the realization that the game wanted you to REPEAT the same thing another FOUR times to experience the entire content of the game. This was an extremely excruciating experience and i wish i could get a refund for purchasing a product like this. Probably the worst game i've ever spent money on and if you think FFXIV was bad, Diablo 3 brings "bad" to a whole new level. Cons:
    1) Hardcore is pointless being that unique bosses use the following about 90% of the time: Teleport, Freeze, Shield, Multiply, pull you to them, Very High elemental damage. Often you die as fast as you can blink.
    2) Item drops: No boss farming in this one. Most unique, set and even rares drop off of random mobs but not often at all on main story bosses. So no Mephy or Baal runs like in D2.
    3) MF hunting is ok but due to the "Cash auction house" they reduced the drop rates of all of the major items such as sets and high end uniques. They are taking the Auction House out of the game in March but they said they are reducing the drop rates even more after that. So months of play and only seeing some uniques means months of play and lucky to see 1 or 2.
    4) Sets and Uniques we came to love in D2 have all been reworked and 95% are total crap now. Remember hunting to finish sets? Forget it now. Out of 6 toons to 60 and of those 6 3 Paragon lvl 18+ I have seen 2 set items drop. Only 2!
    5) The story was simply crap. The cinematic cut scenes are amazing but the story over all just feels pushed and pointless. By the end you feel like you just got kicked int he face with a steel boot for all of your effort.
    6) Item drops over all are disappointing. In D2 it was like Christmas to see a Unique hit the ground because we knew it was a good chance of seeing something worth it. But in D3 you can only handle getting excited about seeing a unique and being disappointed by it being the same crappy item you get to add to your collection of crappy items you have found many times over. Unique item drops after a couple weeks of play gets to the point where you do not even pick up most of them because you just sell them in town like other junk gear, but these crappy uniques are so crappy that you can find a white that would sell for more.
    7) Cash shop screwed up the value of items. So even low level uniques are on the AH for millions of in game gold. This means the value system is based off real money and even with the AH being brought down, the costs will climb due to the fact they are reducing drop rates further. So item trading has become a sell your soul feel more than anything else.

This game had an chance to be a beast of a game but just like all of the other game companies that are around now, they rushed a game release and did not give a crap to put thought into the game. The used the name to sell it and just killed the game name. D4 is not a game I would even buy after this joke of a release. I have never seen a game go off this deep end and ever recover. They always seem to follow the Aliens film franchise, Rush Alien 3 and piss off a fan base. Then rush out more to sucker people into the "Maybe it will be better this time" or the "It could not be worse than the last one". This normally ended with people damn near in tears after the movies yelling "They found a way to make it even more stupid!!!!".

People need to just be done with game companies like this. Refusal to support them is the only way you can win.

So you play and play and play and you get items and you get no upgrades because you have to use their "Auction house" to buy any new items to keep up with their difficulty curve.

So you have to take all that crappy loot you can't use, try to pawn it off at the auction house and buy new loot from the auction house that someone else found for your class. Here's an idea, how about the monsters drop items for ME? instead of this stupid middle man called the Auction house?

But wait, put in a bunch of useless affixations for your items and 0 character and class customization and you get a very very boring game with an auction house run by bots and a game that is frustrating, boring, and tedious.

Going to the forums doesn't help because all you get is a bunch of PC(politically correct) General managing robots that don't give you straight answers and just answer stupid questions like "What is your favorite monster?"

I'm really disgusted with this game considering it took 9 years to create this mess.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
