Although I have found Diablo 3 to be thoroughly enjoyable, I can't deny that I'm somewhat disappointed after such a long wait. Firstly the visuals, despite being pretty, are not really dark enough or befitting of a Diablo title.

I remember playing the first game and being genuinely disturbed by the dank environments, with their low lighting and desaturated sprites. Now it's all too polished, clean and bright.

Although it's fun to go back to the old 'point and click/hack and slash' method of yesteryear, one can't help but think that a slightly more intuitive approach to game play could have been implemented.

If you enjoy the Diablo legend, and similar such 'hell on earth' fantasy type affairs, you'll find a definite level of enjoyment here.

This game is a colossal and dismal failure. How could it fail so badly when it had such a great example to follow? The developers goals were lofty, yet they chose on multiple occasions to abandon systems that worked tremendously well in the past and instead chose to implement unproven systems. Why reinvent the wheel when it comes to the stat, skill and item systems? A new story, new characters, more items in the same vein as the items of the past games and heck while your at it throw in a few new, fun systems, but test them. And test them again. And...Ahhh... you get the point. I purchased this looking for a game that blended nostalgic moments from the content and systems of Diablo 2 with modern advances in gaming and iterations of the franchise that fun new experiences. I got a game devised to cash in on it's predecessor's glory and was entirely a failed attempt at innovation. This is a SKIP. Expand

Ridiculous critics scores. Don't waste 60 bucks! After over a decade of waiting this is what we get? The gameplay has been reduced to left click to win and skills and attributes have been removed or simplified to increase the dependency on gear so that you'll be more likely to use the Auction House. And that is exactly where they want you.

I would have loved to see a similar kind of bold steps that the witcher 2 took in their game to appeal to a more mature audience. The moderate amount of complexity that d2 had is what distracted from the fact that the story was not what drove players through to the end of the game. Selling out to mass appeal is what caused a giant to have what some would call its first big mistake. Expand

I haven't had any connectivity issues so that is good. But the actual gameplay is so boring, graphics looks like it was from 2005. The game is basically about mindlessly walking a linear path and spamming the mouse button to kill enemies. Avoid.

I liked the fact that the smithing system which it will produce different effects of each piece of equipments, making me wanted to collect the materials and smith again, increase the durability of the game. HOWEVER, there are many weak points of this game which lower the score, in my opinion, I really dislike the difficulty system which restricted you to play through the whole four acts till you unlock the next difficulty, it was very boring that you already remembered all the monsters location and the mission. IF you are trying to get to inferno difficulty, imagine how many times you have to play through the complete identical four acts again and wasting your time. Another point that I hate this game was the server system, often times I was getting so piss off due to the fact that I always get kicked from the server because it was full, how ridiculous was that, and you had to wait for half an hour in order to continue the game, what was the idea behind this, kept us lock in a room and wait for the countdown to complete? You bought this game to enjoy, not to wait. Actually there also have many bad areas about this game, but these were the main once. To make an conclusion, I think that this was a so-so game wont worth freaken 69.99 USD for that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played the other two Diablo games to the end and just completed this one on "normal".
I will start to try to ignore history and rate this for what it is.
-The persistant online connection for single player coupled with servers failing would normally fail a game just for that. The "careful" Beta testing was done, they knew what they were getting into and failed to make the necessary changes.
-The system requirements are very low which is great but it fails to make full use of a modern system on the other hand. The background images I admit are very nice but actual game play graphics or even character animations could have been more. -The various information screens and combo experience awards seem to detract from the immersive experience but that may just be personal preference. Having the character do a fist pump in the air or some alternate animation or bellow would have done far more in my opinion. All the arrows and blinking and circles on the map are way too -The configurable skills seem to hit the right balance to me. I am happy to change tactics (If you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail) so changing the tools of the character give some added adaptability and does not lock-in a character. This is a very positive area I feel but some like to have the perfect killing combo that is not easily achieved so it would upset people from that crowd.
-The auction house just breaks the system: every scrap of useful gear by EVERY PLAYER available for purchase and resale FOREVER. The AH is the primary reason for all other design considerations including the DRM since we do not want spoofing gear locally on the client end.
-The blacksmith: Doing tons of upgrades for this guy, does it ever pay off? Seemed like diminishing returns, increase stash and share with all your characters seems the way to go.

    History Considered:
-Rehash combination of the prior 2 games in scenery, locale and look. This can be good and bad.
-Standalone game with no server would have fixed launch woes and made many solo players very happy. This was their buisness decision so consequence and benefit is on their heads.
-D2 with the expansion is still better, thanks for the collectors edition including it to remind me.

Overall: For a "when it is ready" it is a too obvious money grab and people find it offensive: it appeared they ignored their fans when they claim high and low we are the primary focus so it is like being caught in a lie. Good middle of the road game with failed expectations making it rate lower.

The Good: The environments are extremely interesting, with plenty of areas to explore. Some of the fights have interesting mechanics, particularly the Diablo and Belial fights.

The whole game is designed to force the majority of players to use real money auction house.
Loot system is very terrible and random and items have ridiculously random stats, the item system is just stupid copy from world of warcraft, not creative at all.

Diablo 3 DRM just ruins the game, an internet reguirement will not stop the game from being pirated, internet reguirement will not stop the game from being hacked, the only reason why internet is reguired is the real money auction house.

Hardcore mode for example is just ruined because of internet, one disconnect and you might die, or server crash and you lose it all, hacked and lose it all.

Diablo 3 is just kite, click, kite, click kite, click kite. The game story is terrible and it doesnt make you want to say " wow " and playing it again on harder difficulties is just an agony after doing it on normal, not because of harder difficulty, its because the replay value is terrible and new modes dont bring anything new except loot thats sickly random.

Diablo 3 class balance is also terrible, casters have so much easier time and can do with much less gear.

Diablo 3 is catered for casual gamers, the only difficulty in inferno is kite spamming and spam ressing after you die, there is no real penalty for death on normal mode so spam ress away.

The biggest flaw in diablo 3 is the real money auction house, and i wanted to say more about it and why it will ruin the game.

Discussion about the value of diablo 3 gold in the real money auction house.

So a lot of people seem to think that the value will be 20 euros for every 1 million diablo 3 gold.
Now lets say some facts, diablo 3 has 6 million players or more. In most countries the minium wage is 5-10 euros a hour, and thats minium, and most people in world get minium wage as a payment.
Now if diablo 3 had the gold value of 20 euros for every 1 million gold. An average farmer in diablo 3 at max level can farm anywhere between 300k - 500k gold a hour that means in 20 hours ( if person did this as a job ) you would make 10 million diablo 3 gold, and now if the value was the assumed 20 euros for every 1 million diablo gold, thats 200 euros a day, and in a month thats 6000 euros. A serious gold farmer can make 1m+ a hour with farming or auction house item flipping. Also understand that there is more poor then rich people in world.
So 6000 euros a month playing a game?
    ... Think again!!
If the text above was reality, everyone would be doing diablo 3 as a job. And most people in games do not buy stuff to become better. They play for it instead. And if the chances of making 200 euros a day was reality everyone would be doing that.
Pretty much all online games are spammed with gold farmers, these guys will play 24 hours a day in hope making even little money. They will undercut you, spam the rmah with thousands of items. After playing mmorpgs for years i can say that the ratio to gold seller and buyer is pretty much 100 sellers for every 10 buyers. This means prices will inflate crazy hard. In pretty much every mmorpg i know the black market value for gold is 0.70 euros for 3-5 hours of gameplay work ( gold farming ). Do notice i used word black market this means there is less sellers as legal gold selling doesnt exist, diablo 3 does not have black market, its open and safe market so there will be much much much more sellers. So more logical value, i can safely say in that in my opinion, 2 weeks after RMAH is live the gold will be anywhere between 15 - 20 million diablo gold for 1 euro. Everyone will be thinking " i will make hundreds of dollars, but when theres millions of players thinking the same and only 10 buyers for every 100 sellers, think again. Also diablo 3 has i think it was 10 free auctions after that deposit to rmah costs 1 euros for every item.
This means 10 free deposits a week, and after that it costs money, this means the undercutting competition will be insane, as people do not want to lose their free deposits for nothing. Now this is why the game will be ruined, people will want to make money, the normal gold auction house will be so inflated that if you want to buy any good item for max level you will never find it from the gold auction house as gold will be worthless.

Its sad that this game, that looks beautiful and has good gameplay is ruined by greediness. Without the real money auction house, this game would have been perfect, as that would also have ment that internet would not have been a reguirement.

Gameplay... Oh boy. I could go on and ramble about the weaknesses of this game like everybody did. Instead here are three things Blizzard has to fix in order for the game to make more fun:

-Get rid of the preskilling system. All of it. Skill AND Ability preskilling is the wrong way. Most of the fun in D1 and D2 was character customization. If you simplify it, you take out the fun of the game. Instead, make choice matter.

-Skill damage based on weapon damage. Get rid of it. Seriously, this mechanics is the very reason that's making the game repetitive and unplayably boring. All you need to win is enough items with +stat to your main attribute. I keep seeing lvl 26 characters dual wielding 196 damage weapons and owning every major boss in under 10 secons. That would not have been possible in D2.

-More Diversity in item affixes. All you get are the same lame stats boost over and over again, magic find, more xp and gold and such. Healthdrain is rendered obsolete by the new healthglobe system. You could make the game more challenging by reducing the drops of those healthglobes.

The writing and the story are absolutely terrible, the loot was poorly designed, the procedural generation has too many static elements for fun variation, the boss fights aren't particularly exciting, and the advancement skill gap at higher levels is stupidly unbalanced and made the actual viable class/skill choices terribly narrow.

The RMAH ended up not working for them at all, except for the reasonable amount of money it made Blizzard with huge fees. Honestly it was decently fun to use and I'm sure some people farmed, or bought all their items. And maybe the RMAH Gold Hall were used more than was intended, but honestly, trading was always a big part of original Diablo because there were actually items worth getting and things worth crafting.

Now even that's going away. Instead of taking the time to remove a feature, maybe take some more time to make an actual game. 12 years obviously wasn't enough.

It really should have been held for another year, the lack of content is inexcusable in a rogue-like game. The story falls apart in act 4, the narrative is disjointed, characters poorly constructed, controls and combat overly simplistic, and progression is painfully uneven. Loot drops are excessively random even in full parties with very high MF and max valor stacks. The amount of grinding to progress the story is excessive. Which leads to the assumption that loot tables were adjusted to encourage the use of the real money auction house. Either it's poor game design or something nefarious the effect is the same. The story is too short and poorly explained. Acts 2 and 3 deserved far more exposition than they received and all act 4 needed was Fonzie on a surfboard. The game needed more story content, having a more robust story or better gameplay would have carried it through. Gameplay is too simple and the skills are.....lacking. Reducing a character to 6 skills and the interaction of the skills with enemies and the environments is very limiting. With the new way that health functioned there was great promise for complex combos and action elements that could have evolved the game. Instead they served to make it derivative almost like a flash game with Diablo branding. The ultimate problem with D3 is not it's always on connection nor it's changes to health or even the RMAH that it's design cues come from micro-transaction games. These are games of last resort disposable and only played when we don't have a computer, Game Boy, Vita, console, computer or emulator handy. Diablo 3 teaches us that play medium is important if D3 had debuted on a tablet would have been a fine game and the design changes would have made sense in the context of the devices limitations. Instead it left me with a short hollow and disappointing experience, Diablo 3 has the distinction of being only the second game I have ever regretted purchasing. The number one disappointment for me though was the lack of a Diablo feel. The story was laughable. The villains were just ridiculous and cartoony, in a bad way. The music was overly epic and didn't fit the Diablo feel. A lot of the game felt a bit like World of Warcraft. In fact there were even naga type enemies in Act 2. One of them had a laughably awful line, "YOU WILL NOT GET INTO THE AQUEDUCT!" or something along those lines.

Overall, just skip the game if you loved Diablo 1 or 2. If you never played the original Diablo games, this is a pretty average game, but I think everyone expected better from Blizzard.

I wrote a 5000 signs review, but I'm editing it down:

The good: -Nice graphics -Fluid gameplay The bad: -The story -The items -New item slots that add nothing to the game but graphics -The character offensive skills all being completely dependend on and fully based on weapon damage -Even spells being completely dependent on weapon damage -The taste in my mouth when a hammer

    The bad:
    -The story

-New item slots that add nothing to the game but graphics
-The character offensive skills all being completely dependend on and fully based on weapon damage
-Even spells being completely dependent on weapon damage
-The taste in my mouth when a hammer with 500 fire damage makes my cold spells stronger simply because it deals more damage than the wand I had before
-The lack of ANY actual character development beyond the CoD unlock-on-level model
-Better items being a nonfunctional replacement for character development
-The cartoony monster affixes (Arcane Sentry, reflect damage, invulnerable minions)
    -The cheesy NPCs
-The cartoonish and childish style, dialogue and plot
-All characters are the one and same with different colors of sparkling on their attacks
-The auction house made necessary to have any fun what so ever
-The real money auction house giving botters incentive to bot
-The odds of finding useful items you need without using the auction house
-Difficulty solely being the grade of your equipment in any given encounter
    -Bosses never drop anything useful
-Nephalem valor band-aid on the broken spine that it the game's itemization
-Paragon levels band-aid on the buried corpse that is character development
-Maps are all small mazes not large open spaces.
    -Maps are not randomly generated.
    -No functional PVP
-PVP gameplay being displayed in 2010 but scrapped
-Areas and mechanics in gameplay videos getting scrapped
-Diablo II and Lord of Destruction gameplay and mechanics getting scrapped in favor of WoW mechanics
-Diablo II enemies and lore getting completely scrapped in favor of all new enemies
-The british skeleton archers. Talking. Skeletons. Talking british. SERIOUSLY?!?!?
-They were WARNED about all of this in the beta OH SO MANY TIMES but did nothing

3 points for decent graphics and smooth mechanics, but that is all Diablo III really offers unless you're looking to make a good buck by ripping off the fools in the real money auction house. which is incredibly easy since most are kids stealing their parents' credit cards.

I played this game after the release. The gameplay on the very first run was really addictive. But playing the same runs over and over every time on a more difficult level gets really boring. Another negative point was the in game market. You could buy stuff with real money. So trying to get great gear ingame wasnt rewarding at all. Spending a few bucks was way easier.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
