We actually managed to sidestep the login issues, so this review will not be taking blizzard's disastrous handling of drm and their servers into account. That's not to say there's nothing I don't like about the service. The friend system blizzard set up for battlenet is flat out stupid. Why do you need a special code to add a friend? Seriously why? Considering how important it is for adding friends, why isn't it on clear display on your in game profile? I didn't pick the numbers, they were randomly assigned to me, so I had to open up a browser, go to my battlenet account and look it up. It is frankly a pointless hassle. We're friends in starcraft 2 anyway, why doesn't that carry over? Blizzard's digital distribution system is just flat out crappy. But on to the actual game. Well it's not very pretty to be quite frank. It's got good art direction, but it's not an mmo, no need to have the game render 500 people at once. Why aren't there better graphics settings? The game certainly knows that it's not an mmo, because mmo's have character customization. Diablo 1 and 2 had preset non customizable characters because they used rotoscopings of 3d models well in advance of what the game and pcs back then could render in real time. Diablo 3 has mmo quality graphics, so why can't we at least have a little customization? An immediate comparison for me here is vindictus, an instanced mmo beat em up game where classes are pre set characters. That game is about 3 years old now, looks better, and has pretty robust character customization anyway.
The next biggest issue with character customization is that you can't assign stat points. So the only difference between characters is their equipment and what skills they have equipped. All skills are automatically unlocked at set levels, so everyone has the same skills to pick from. The rationale behind this being that people would just find whatever was the most efficient build and everyone would do that, but I don't see how removing everything changes that. People will still do the exact same thing, it'll just be a lot easier for everyone to switch. Frankly it takes all the diversity out of things. You'll never see people coming up with any wacky builds or trying new things because there's nothing new to try.
So items are basically the ONLY way to distinguish characters. Well then they must have put a lot of work into making lots of really diverse items right? Nope. You can dye items. That's about it. You'll get a million of the exact same looking hat with randomized stats. They haven't improved it an iota since diablo 2.
So on to the story. Is the story interesting? No. No it isn't. It's generic as hell. Blizzard has lost all the writing panache and daring they had in the starcraft/diablo 2/warcraft 3 days. Just imagine the most simplistic straightforward story about fighting demons and you'll basically have diablo 3's story. The characters are all featureless talking heads that talk like their in a dining car murder mystery and I feel like I'm in one too. The gameplay. It's exactly the same as diablo 2. I guess. You click on monsters, they die, you pick up gold and items they drop. 99% of items will be worthless trash you sell as soon as you go back to town, the other 1% will be an incremental stat upgrade. The boss fights are about as use all your abilities when they are off cooldown until it dies. Only less so. There's no dodging or strategy, and the bosses aren't particularly challenging, they just have big health bars. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack. Blizzard may have fallen a long way in every other regard, but their composers are still top notch. The music is far more thrilling than the actual game.
My bottom line advice is don't buy it. If you didn't like diablo 1 or 2, there's nothing about diablo 3 that will change your mind. If you loved diablo 1 and 2, you're more likely to be disappointed by what they gutted from those games than the graphics facelift circa 2008. If you're a lore buff and you want to find out what happened after diablo 2, I don't think you'll like what they've done. It's not as bad as what starcraft 2 did to starcraft's story, but it's certainly not a worthwhile investment. If you're just too diehard a fan to not get it then wait. Seriously, just wait. A price drop will make the game a lot easier to swallow. $60 is ridiculous for what we're getting. Also, the inevitable drm crack to make the singleplayer component of the game playable when blizzards servers down or you just can't be online (a plane, a road trip, just away from a connection, there's plenty of times when you can't be online and you should still be able to play the game you payed for).

Regarding the gameplay, D3 is better than D2 in some respects and worse in others. However, many of the decisions you had to make in D2 (e.g. invest in strength to be able to wear this new armor you found, or in intelligence to be able to use more skills) were taken out of the game to make it more accessible. Thus, you dont look forward to new levels that much anymore.
The "casual" design also causes the player's focus to shift from the characters development to the storyline, which isn't exactly a good thing. While the dialogues aren't quite as bad as in D2, they are still rather dumb most of the time. A blacksmith who just killed his wife in front of your eyes, so that she wont turn into a zombie, will talk on about your next quest as if he had nothing else on his mind. Where is the intensity, where is despair and the grit that the characters in D1 conveyed? And what with the silly, officious accolades your character gets all the time? It is hard to imagine that anyone who is old enough to buy the game will feel engrossed by the story and its often superficial wording.
That's a shame, because the soundtrack is truly excellent. If they could have left out the dialogues, the music alone would go a long way in creating an immersive atmosphere.
Finally, having no single player mode would be bad, but still somewhat acceptable, if only the servers were ready for the amount of users. After millions of preorders, the demand cant have come as a huge surprise to Blizzard. And I am somewhat sceptical whether the situation will improve, as it doesn't seem very likely that less and less people will try to play the game in the coming days. All in all, I am considering returning the game, an idea that never crossed my mind when I compared D2 to its predecessor.

As a long time fan of the genre I was absolutely appalled at some of the decisions Blizzard made. They can be forgiven for not incorporating visual customisations to the characters but the removal of skill trees and manual stat distribution is unacceptable. There is some degree of skill customisation with the addition of "Runes" which can alter the properties of a particular spell or ability but this feature is still ridiculously limited. The evil and gritty atmosphere of the previous instalments is no where to be seen, and it's place we have what is best described as a Halloween cartoon special. Long time fans of the Diablo series and dungeon crawlers in general will be disappointed with this entry. However, if you are a newcomer to the genre then there is a limited amount of entertainment on offer. Expand

I just played Diablo II again after the grand release of Diablo III and i cannot stand how much they ruined the fun of the original. Diablo 2 was just a simple enter into the game and simply start clicking on enemies, it had nice atsmophere and great animation for its time. It's sad that one of the things i most loved about Diablo 2 was it's Design and due to MODERN GAMES they have to completly change the style of Diablo, it's like Blizzard forgot how to do a Diablo game and simply borrow its style from its recent games such as World of Warcraft or Starcraft 2. The cutscenes are a great example of this, they are so generic it makes Final Fantasy parodies look a bit original, when in Diablo 2 cutscenes where dark and full of good spacing. It's a good thing i follow the rule of "Don't worry nothing will harm or modify your opinion on the experience you had with the predecessors" Because gee out of anything Diablo 3 Is pretty much one of the weakest Blizzard games I have played. Starcraft 2 was a pretty decent sequel though, what happened Blizzard?! Expand

Imagine that - I want to play a single player game, by myself, and my greatest adversary is LAG, a common ONLINE MULTIPLAYER problem. Blizzard seriously screwed over its consumers by adding this stupid always online requirement, and the main reason seems to be for the real money auction house, a feature few asked for and even fewer want now that they've had to deal with the constant online issues.

If you haven't bought it, do yourself a favor and don't. It is a great game, but given all the problems you have to deal withm it's not worth $60. it's not even worth $10, with all these issues. Vote with your money, tell Blizzard this is NOT acceptable.

Probably the worst case of DRM screwing over consumers so far this year, and possibly last. Diablo 3 is only playable with a sustained internet connection, and if you happen to lose said connection at any point your gameplay, as well as any progress you've made since the last checkpoint barring exp, items/gold gathered, or quest progress is gone. Exploring a winding, confusing cryptProbably the worst case of DRM screwing over consumers so far this year, and possibly last. Diablo 3 is only playable with a sustained internet connection, and if you happen to lose said connection at any point your gameplay, as well as any progress you've made since the last checkpoint barring exp, items/gold gathered, or quest progress is gone. Exploring a winding, confusing crypt (Spoilers: you probably won't be doing this much) and feeling immersed? We be prepared to start all over again if your internet decides to so much as hiccup. The lag is another issue cause by the forced online. Everything that I could see was server sided, if anyone on my connection decided to do anything I would have enemies rubber banding and attacks whiffing while they teleported around and whittled down my HP until it subsided. Maybe this is an issue with my connection, but the fact that I'm lagging while playing alone in a world generated specifically for this session is absurd. The gameplay in Diablo 3 borrows heavily from MMOs unlike its predecessor. Travel and exploration has been dumbed down to the point where there is almost always a warp point immediately outside of your quest goal, which is now written down neatly in an organized list (so you don't forget) located underneath your new minimap that details all quest points and portals before you reach them (so you don't get lost). A crafting system has been implemented (OH JOY!) where you have to legitimately pay your blacksmith over and over to skill up, then pay him again to craft things with materials that you provide by breaking down magic items. Combat is usually too easy, and tends more like grinding than actual gameplay. Even the biggest most intimidating enemies are laughably easy to kill most of the time and become little more than a time barrier between you and the next boss. Bosses are actually pretty good fights, they don't seem to rely on enchantments as much as D2 did and each boss has quite a few well planned out tricks up their sleeves. I'm sure the fights would be very entertaining if you weren't rubberbanding all over the map and spamming your potion button because your roommate decided to download a porno.

Overall it isn't anywhere near a good enough game to save itself from its unbelievably poor design decisions and DRM, and it certainly doesn't live up to the Diablo name.

The mistake was the real money auction house which by no means was worth dealing with DRM considering fans hate both. On other notes though...the game is a huge departure from Diablo in many ways...it just doesn't fully feel like a diablo game...the colors, the ambiance, the in-game cutsceneces (not cinematics mind you) its like the world of warcraft team took over, and although I played that game, they are two separate entities. I remember a diablo that scared the living crap out of me, with very dark haunting music and horrifying enemies, bodies on pikes and hung by their innards...that was the real stuff..it made you feel like you were slaughtering terrifying creatures. This game is easy...the characters are nowhere near as impressive as in the past...they talk too much....the bosses talk too much...and without going on a tangent its just literally been redesigned for the casual gamer and ultimately to make more money. Blizzard you really screwed the pooch on this one, 11+ years to develop this game...and although it is a mildy fun game(not nearly as addictive as the other two were) it is not a Diablo game. Simple story, diablo speaking?? Really....horrible voice-acting. Its just dumbed-down in every sense and I could go on all day. This game may appeal to new players and loyal fanboys who will make themselves play it, but the most loyal of the fans have been betrayed. I will absolutely play it, I payed 100 dollars for it...but I will not invest in another product by Blizzard, and unless this game is fixed...unless changes are made...the Diablo franchise is dead to me. I will not wait another 11 years for disappointment. Expand

It's classes are artistically dynamic and mildly interesting gameplay wise. Overall the game is has more in common with World of Warcraft then its progenitors but that is beside the point. The reason i am giving this a zero is that I am finally over DRM and the retarded money grubbing auction-house. This game is tantamount to highway robbery if you don't have internet. Also even if you do good luck getting on you it might happen right away it might not who the fuchs knows, Blizzard certainly doesn't. I would also like to point the hypocrisy of the real money auction-house, Blizzard has posited that gold farming in WoW is wrong but oh well if we get a cut its all hunkey dorey. On a more personal note I would like to say I own every game Blizzard has developed, and will not buy another one until they fire the apparent room full of retarded monkeys with typewriters who are high on mescalin running their anti-piracy/having common sense department. Another point of contention for me is the fact that it took them twelve years to make a game that looks four years old built on a server infastructure and DRM system i could have made with my pen1s nailed to my face. If games like Sins of Solar Empire and World of Goo (both of which are amazing) can release without DRM, and have a singleplayer while still making a profit. I'm inclined to believe that, Diablo 3 ,one of the most overhyped games ever that wasn't developed by Peter Molyneaux with a mewling sheep like fanbase that will buy anything Blizzard says is good because of their stellar track record since Warcraft 3 (sarcasm!) might make a profit. All in all I'm not saying pirate the game but I'm not saying don't pirate the game. I'm just saying the game is ultimately disappointing and is not worth sixty dollars for a game that could have been made without DRM at much higher quality in less then twelve years. But, the real problem I have is with this single player having to be online. This makes the game glitch and stuttery which is a real pain in the *** if you are playing a class like the Barb or Monk. For example with my Barb sometimes I will try to use the charge or leap ability see my character move forward hit a lag spick and end up right where is was. The last thing I have a problem with is the battle mechanics. To be honest they suck horribly, there is some class customization but nothing like it was for D2. To me it feels like Blizzard just dumbed them down some anyone could play it easily. Remember this has an M rating so I was expecting this game to be geared more at the adult players which in my mind means making it a challenging game and one of the best ways to do this is to make the battle mechanics challenging which they are not.

So to sum it up this game held my interest for not even a week the lag and stutter graphs piss me of to no end and worst of all I always have to be online to play this "single player game". So my recommendation is to save your money and to buy this game.

The relation of developers is irresponsible. And apologies only occasion, to win little time on the correction of the errors. Diablo 2 Lord of Distaction was the game of decade. And Diablo 3 is a pitiful parody on the predecessors. Disgrace of Blizzard. Developers did not justify expectations of players. Expand

Automatic Attributes, Skills, now even Runes you unlock automatically, I dont see a reason why does it just play automatically and you just watch... Stupid game big disappointment. I dont like new plastic fancy fairy tale design, diablo is about gothic-demons-gore

This will most likely be the last Blizzard game i ever buy, i feel they've taken enough of my money without actually giving enough back, I will say that not all is bad with Diablo, its fun to play with friends on higher difficulty, and its quite nice to roam dungeons eventhough it's mindless farming if you think about it (Blizz in a nutshell) However i enjoyed this title to a extent, Story sucked, customization was poor ( there is none almost) as well as Meh graphics for 2012, Overall its a ok game, not a blockbuster or a memorable game, but it serves as time killing and some fun co-op moments. The Harry_Pontek pay for the game and he expect to be able to play it at his own convenient time. BUT blizzy for whatever reason known only to their money minded brain, decides to take this "given" right away. So authoritative is blizzy, they deems it fit to dictate when you can and cannot play EVEN WHEN you pay premium for it.

Alright... Some of you might say "You already know this features before it launch. So, why blame after buy". Let The Harry_Pontek explain and the explanation is simple. Its because of the long 12yrs wait and also the love for Diablo series. So, try it out AND GUESS WHAT!!!!!!! ERROR37 and frequent maintenance on the crapper than crab server. Gosh!!!! Is this suppose to be normal? NOPE!!!!!!

Ok.... Let The Harry_Pontek be more liberal about this. Surely this game have something that impress The Harry_Pontek right? What about the gameplay and loot. Talk about this aspect, The Harry_Pontek's blood boil even hotter. The Harry_Pontek now cant customize his character to make uniquely Pontek. Everybody looks the same. Whats the point of playing when you cant relate to the character you choose and build. After a weeks on/off play, The Harry_Pontek cant even get a decent loot. All weapon and armour looks the same. Is it because of the moronic Auction House where you now can buy rather than fight for the loots. This seriously take away the fun. The only saving grace for this game and the only reason why The Harry_Pontek is awarding a 1 for this game is the soundtrack. Nuff said.

Take a deep breath and everything will turn out just fine.

However, once the first play-through is done and you try to move further up the difficulty levels, it simply turns into a repetitious mess focused on one thing: forcing you to play through the same crap over...and over...and over. The items that you legitimately find are terrible, usually 10-15 levels below your character and as such, completely useless. It's not even worth thinking about trying to rely on your own gear drops for your gear because the drop rates are horrendous. Far superior items can be found on the auction house for the amount of gold dropped by running through a small dungeon for the 1000th time. The story is just barely present during the progression through the game, but after the first play-through you don't even care, just click-click-click through everything as fast as possible to get through the painfully repetitive gameplay. The story is so bad that I skipped half of it, didn't even care to go back and listen to it.

Graphics are poor quality, at least 10 year old xbox graphics, probably the time period they designed it. Blizzard's responce to it's fan base rants about how hard inferno is:
"We purposely made it harder then we could beat to change balance"
So we are beta testing infero mode.. WAY TO GO, I was in the real beta test, it was about 10 mins long, about 5 maps.

Maybe they should have had a real beta test on infero to root out these problems before release? I mean they had 12 years to balance it.. ROFL

Don't buy this game, wait for Torchlight 2, Diablo is ruined.

The loot Diablo is known for hence why people still play D2 after 12years is just not present in Diablo 3, It is like the developers never played a Diablo Game even though they all are WoW Developers, this game does remind me of WoW, graphics don't make a game, gameplay does but this game lacks highly in gameplay. Level cap is too low, and there isn't much customization as far as skills go, your damage is determined by your DPS (damage per second) so if you are a wizard and you find a sword with + main stats + high dps then you would use that over a wand, you would think the lightning/cold/fire skills wouldn't be determined by the damage of a sword... but it is. All attacks do the same damage unless you have a rune activated that does more dmg, usually runes are useless, There is usually 1 good rune for each skill and the rest are just not worth it, okay maybe there could be 2 depending on the skill. This game was released WAY too early, I wish vivendi(pre activision merger) let blizzard north do what they do and develop Diablo 3 the way it was MEANT to be developed by the people who CREATED the game itself. I don't even feel like leveling my other characters since I cannot simply make them my own, I would have to play for hours and hours just to level, loot is pointless and they silently fix quests so they don't give very high amounts of experience so you cannot level that fast. I don't want to play this game again, you can rush but leveling to get to the difficulties is just zombie mind numbing since you won't really care about loot once you've already played through hell on another character, Diablo III would be a good game if it didn't have the Diablo name on it, if you want to spend $60 for a game named Diablo, created by developers of World Of Warcraft that has a poor loot system, no customization on skills, and is eventually dependent on an Auction House and doesn't really feel like a Diablo game then go for it. If you have never played Diablo prior to playing this and weren't a HUGE fan of the game and played it for countless hours then I would recommend this game, you'll probably enjoy it a lot more. I really wish blizzard would FIX this game and stop worrying about the auction house, and give us updates to EVERYTHING they do. I am going to seek a rebate for my copy, I had high hopes and now I feel cheated and robbed, this is a disgrace to Diablo. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm very disappointed in this game.

Story - Killing Cain? Come on now. How can the consistent character of ALL DIABLO'S just die during the first act? I imagined Cain to be more heroic, maybe a sacrifice in Act 4 to save Leah that traded his soul for her life. That would have been amazing, but the only sacrifice we saw was Tyreal becoming a (useless) mortal. He didn't even do much to arrive and help. Also, Leah was beautiful and while I was getting excited for her character development, she just turns into Diablo and we melt her face. Thanks Blizzard for creating a main character that added nothing to the experience. Gameplay - The game is very tedious, you're just farming & buying on AH. The excitement to pick up a drop/identify an item was not the same as WoW or D2. As I got to Hell Act 2, I started hating the farm + AH combo, didn't even want to deal with that for leveling another character. The character progression has been simplified to the point that any idiot could play, with 4 button & 2 mouse, there wasn't much of a plethora of options/abilities you could roll out. One of the joys of D2 was having a huge inventory of spells that could be cast for different situations, we're fed a 1-dimensional skillset.

    Cinematic's - Great quality, blizzard never disappoints. That's why I gave a solid 1.

Games nowadays have evolved so much, that our expectations are through the roof. Here is a list of games that were better: Dragon Age, Skyrim and WoW. I'm sure there are more.

Let's put aside the technical issues that have been plaguing users - days of downtime, auction house barely functioning or frustrating to use due to bugs (disappearing listings, placeholders, improper sort-by results) and just dive into the game. You can play this game for dozens and dozens of hours and make no progress in the improvement of your character - I can count on one hand the number of gear drops I've earned for myself in 60 levels of play. Everything else: purchased on the AH. Nothing fun about that, but if you don't do it, good luck progressing. So now I'm in Inferno and I have the choice of either dying to 95% of the elite packs I meet while trying to earn better gear - or mindlessly grinding gold on lower levels like a human meat battery in the Diablo matrix to buy drops someone else was disappointed by when they couldn't use the item on their main. I'd love to play this game and gear my lil' guy through finding gear mostly on my own. As the game stands now, upgrades will almost never come from your own gameplay, unless you count the thrilling gameplay of grinding gold until the number on the screen is finally high enough to thrillingly bid on AH gear and then thrillingly mail it to yourself. This game is pretty bad, and I've played some real bad games in my 25+ years of PC gaming. The saddest part is that there's a kernel of great game here that seems to have been brutally beaten into submission by poor technical execution, saddled with online servers, and anchored to an auction house system that has become (instead of a support system) the meta game you are playing. It's Auction House III, featuring a special guest appearance by Diablo. Sad let down for a once-great title. Expand

I was profoundly disappointed with Diablo III. I played several weeks AFTER release day, so my review is based on the game itself, not the customer service nightmare that was release day. I played the original Diablo and Diablo II, and unfortunately, 10-12 years of development (or however long it took them) didn't result in a marked improvement. On the positive side, I will say thatI was profoundly disappointed with Diablo III. I played the original Diablo and Diablo II, and unfortunately, 10-12 years of development (or however long it took them) didn't result in a marked improvement. On the positive side, I will say that gameplay feels more organic, and each class feels more unique than in previous installments. I admit, I loved the unique feel of the different classes, the animation for their various abilities and being able to tailor these abilities to my individual play style. I also like the fact that I can choose a gender for each class, whereas in previous games your gender depended upon the class you chose, so that was a definite improvement. My main gripe with this game is that, after an hour or two, it's BORING. After you get past the "OMG it's D3!!!" feeling and actually play the game for a few hours, this is what the experience comes down to for me: Run Around. Kill Mobs. Loot. Run Around More. Kill Mobs. Loot More. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Previous installments of the game felt darker and instilled actual fear in me while I played, as the atmosphere and story engaged me and made the experience feel less grindy. The story in D3 seems more in the background than D1 and 2, and the repetitive gameplay and the relegation of the lore to the backburner greatly decreased my engagement in the game. It felt too easy, too repetitive and lacked the depth that was an integral part of Diablo I and II. Some would argue that Diablo I and II had very little depth, but I disagree. Yes, the story of Diablo didn't have the same complexity of the Warcraft or Starcraft franchises, but the lore was still rich and evoked a sense of fear and darkness that I simply didn't feel in D3 - even with the added cinematics, which felt hollow somehow. All in all, I was profoundly disappointed in Diablo III. Though it looks great and the classes were unique and fun to play for a short time, Diablo III felt repetitive and fell flat. It sadly lacks heart, and felt more like a generic hack-and-slash money-grab than a high-quality, complex universe that Blizzard was known for producing in the past. Expand

The excitement feeling from dropping "gold" as we know from previous series is completely gone. The game lacks heart and soul. I would never thought I will write negative review for Diablo 3. If this game was named differently and was not released by Blizzard, I would rate it probably 6/10. But I consider it also the biggest scam. 60$ for this is simply too much. Replayability is at zero (just for comparison, I´ve played the 9-bucks CS GO for more hours than D3 from their release). Eventhough some artistic aspects of the game are pretty decent (voice acting, environment, music) it cannot entertain common player very long. But for a casual its a decent pick. Expand

Couple that with the fact that the dev team can't seem to dig their heads out of their behinds and fix the problems in an orderly manner, and that they have promised features which they have now entirely scrapped and have no plans of including. Well, you get the feeling that this was a blatant cash grab on the part of blizzard and they flat out lied to their customer base. That doesn't even take into account the horrible "always connected" drm which has lead to nothing but problems, the blatant lack of testing their product on implicitly supported hardware before launch, the terrible bugs caused by awful coding practices, the completely broken loot system in a loot driven game, a laughable implementation of character customization, the almost completely static "random maps", and to top it all off - the entire game is based around the premise of bleeding the player base for even more money through "micro-transactions" which result in anything but a micro amount. This game is a kick in the teeth to anyone with any rpg gaming background. Avoid it like the plague... Expand

Very strange, because a USB mouse is about the simplest device in the world. (Yes, my drivers are up-to-date.) Blizzard lied about having a "real money" auction house. As of now that's vaporware. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't. The game itself is generic. For those that don't know... There is no "character creation". Essentially this game is a elaborate random item generator that plays on the gambling instinct. The entire game is focussed on "drops". That's it. The "story", such that it is, actually slows down the only fun thing about this game: the item drops. There is no sense of connection to the your character. Every level is essentially an elaborate 'tube' that you have to walk through and survive. The other reviews that say that D3 is an unworthy sequel to D2 are 100% correct. The only decent thing about D3 is Matt Uelmen's soundtrack. The only reason I don't feel completely robbed out of $60 is that Matt is going to get a little piece of that. D and D2 were great because they were 'original', in the sense that it had a very unique and special feel. But D3 doesn't break any new ground, and it doesn't have the charm of D2. D3 is a lot like the latest Van Halen album. Tattoo is an old tired Van Halen trying to sound like they used to, and failing for subtle yet embarrassing reasons. Likewise, Blizzard is a tired old video game company, and D3 fails for similarly subtle and embarrassing reasons. In three months ArenaNet is going to own the world and D3 is going to be a footnote in the history of bad product launches. I'm giving D3 a score of 3, two points of which are awarded to Matt Uelmen for the music. Quite frankly, if I'd known a month ago what I know today, I would have simply purchased the D3 soundtrack CD and continued playing online poker until Guild Wars 2 goes live. D3 will be my last ever purchase from Blizzard. Today Curt Schilling's video game company went gone belly up in Rhode Island. I can only wish the same fate for Blizzard. Expand

Its Now been several years and many developers have made similar games, I had hoped with the long wait Blizzard had made some new additions to this iconic title or at the least made more modern updates to the old formula to continue its legacy. Sadly Diablo 3 did not deliver, lets set aside the launch day problems, if that were the only issue here I could forgive not being able to play much on opening day. The game play is solid but nothing new or groundbreaking but this game has a lack of customization that I find disturbing most good new RPG games Provide tools to customize the appearance of your character. It is important to many players In a Roll Playing Game to be able to make the character as they see it, to take ownership and grow him in to what they like, playing with other cloned players devalues the experience and makes it difficult to be a proud owner of your character. Worse then not being able to change your appearance is making every person playing the same class a clone, the skill tree idea has been such a great way to give players choices on how to make characters as they see fit and taking this away makes me feel like I am playing your character not mine. So now that we are all playing identical twins the trade off should be amazing graphics right? Well the graphics are not bad but they are not good either looking more like something that should have been released a few years ago and the sound is good but the voice acting leaves something to be desired (competing with Bioware in voice acting will make it tough for them to rate well in this). I have not had time to beat the game yet (I work long hours the rest of the week and it has been unplayable most of the opening day so I will have to wait till the weekend to play again I hope the bugs will be worked out by then) but I have been told that it is not very long. I hope this is not true and that Blizzard is not counting on PVP and repetition to keep us playing, and I really hope they are not counting on releasing several more expansions at $60 each containing content that should have been released with the original game. At this point the game would be rated at a 5 of 10 but there decision to take out offline play entirely making it so we are not really purchasing the game but more like renting it from them for as long as there servers are supporting it. Not to mention the inability to play a single player game because they are doing server work or my internet is down. People will support the policy because of all the cheating that went on in the other Diablo titles but removing offline play will not stop this and any one thinking that hackers will not find a way to hack and cheaters will not find a way to cheat this system are just kidding them selves. look at WOW its online only and that has not prevented several speed hacking and item duping hacks from being used over the years.
To sum things up this game is a major step back from previous titles and I hope Blizzard realizes this and makes corrections bringing this game up to modern standards. My message to Blizzard, I own all the titles you have released on pc and they are good games but it seems that you have not been playing other games on the market recently so let me tell you what an RPG player expects in the year 2012 from a premium priced title, customization is key changing the looks and skills of your character makes it seem like you have hundreds of options instead of just the basic Classes, a long and involving story make me feel like I got my moneys worth out of paying your premium price , Graphics do not make the game and blizzard has never been known for cutting edge graphics so I can forgive the graphics if the game is reliable but making it rely on your servers and an internet connection takes away reliability leaving me withe a game that can be surpassed by smaller developers for a fraction of the cost (for the price of this game I could have purchased 8 copies of torchlight and torchlight 2 from steam and given it to many of my friends) . Overall I cant give this game better then a 3 as it is now i would love for Blizzard to listen to its fans and fix many of the things the fans are asking for but I don't hold much hope for that as it seems recently they see me as more of a wallet then a fan of there games.

Its a lot to pay for a game and frankly I expected more. Its quiet obvious that I've paid £44 for the maintenance of servers so Blizzard can capitalize on their profits. Clearly very little of that money has gone into the development of this game. I'm not going to go over the connection issues and other bugs, they've been well documented. I want to talk about how I'm really bored of this game. Its a bland, its easy, its boring. The gameplay is so one dimensional its painful. When Blizzard first pitched this game we were promised a game that would require more strategy over the previous titles, but honestly, it more point and click than Diablo 2. And thats saying something. The storyline is basic, the twists are obvious, the music...oh don't get me started on the music! Its like Diablo has lost its soul. A lot of people have commented positively on the voice acting. I honestly don't see why. The actors sound too jovial for a game like this. There's no sense of danger, no sense of urgency, its like 'who cares' whether you kill Diablo or not. The fear of fighting your way through the world of sanctuary has gone. You cant take this game seriously because it looks like a cartoon. Even Hello Kitty looks more menacing than the monsters in Diablo 3.

And its the little things too like the sound effects. It sounds kak. You don't feel like your interacting with a system, rather passing through a load of screens. I was really looking forward to this game and ignored a lot of the negative comments directed towards it. This game had so much potential, I cannot believe that Blizzard have managed to sc@w it up.

If it was £20, then yea, fair do's you expect to have to take a gamble on a game at that price. But its £44! You expect something a lot more polished. Torchlight cost me £15 and that even though it doesn't have half the stuff Diablo 3 does, its still far more enjoyable. And I don't have to have a constant internet connection to play. C'mon Blizzard, that's a lot of money for people to pay, especially in this climate. What were you thinking?! Paying for a game like this would actually do more to encourage piracy than to put it off.

I was so annoyed that I created a metacritic account especially to express my annoyance. What I cant believe either are the critics reviews. Any reviewer worth their salt would not give this a positive score. Its just a joke. In my opinion their all sucking up to Blizzard and they should be ashamed of themselves. Consumers rely on critics to do their jobs so people don't get conned into buying something they won't like. I refuse to believe that every critic thought this game deserved over 80%. Not just because of personal experience, but because of the huge numbers of users that have given it a negative review. You might argue that there are over 800 positive reviews, but if you read them, you'll notice that alot of them are protest reviews against the negative one. So far I haven't seen one negative critic review and that says it all. We've been conned by Blizzard and we've been conned by the critics. I'm going to ask for my money back and I'm going to boycott Blizzard games from now on.

For fans of D II and D I news aren't good either. The graphics lost their appeal and enthralling addictive dark quality. While it doesn't look as bas as LoL it doesn't look good appealing and diablo-like.

Foreshadowing Mist of Pandaria D III loses its RPG appeal. Levels are just numbers say goodbye talent points and skills, catering for angry birds and farmville players.

Like in Free-2-play MMORPG you can purchase better game changing items with real money, the difference being Diablo is not free and Blizzard takes its tidy profit cut on all auctions. Of course this is a boon for Chinese farmers and an invitation to hack accounts.

To summarise Diablo III may be interesting to young new players who never played Diablo II or III and want a quick game that can be played with one or two keys.

For the legacy players, the appeal may be much more limited.

I can't even be bothered to review the 'ACTUAL' game becuase half the time I just get screenshots of it due to lag spikes.

Only buy this game if you like this sort of game, have got a decent internet connection and nobody else in the household wants to watch a steaming movie or download something whilst you play. You will regret it otherwise.

If this is a sign of things to come then it will be the final nail in the coffin for PC gaming.

As for the game itself, when it is available... It is far too easy. Lack of skill tree does not hurt so much, but still I'd prefer to have more options to make my character unique. The story is simple and short, though it does contain quite a few treats for Diablo fans in form of dialogue references and diaries hidden here and there. Playing Diablo III together with my wife is fun, but I doubt I would like to play it solo - I think it would be far too boring. I don't get it why the critics give the game such a high score.

The game seems cool for the 2hours I played it over the weekend and all, but I honestly think Torchlight is just as good.

Diablo III. That name has sent a shiver of anticipation down my spine ever since the confirmation of its existence back in 2008. That name has sent a shiver of anticipation down my spine ever since the confirmation of its existence back in 2008. I spent countless hours of my youth playing its predecessors, to which the RSI in wrists is testament. As the release date drew closer I researched obsessively on the minimum required performance to ensure a constant 60 FPS. After the system was built I paid the premium to get Diablo III via Blizz's digital delivery, ready to install and play the moment the servers went live.

The first login took 45 minutes of constant login spamming. I was in! I spent a while just wandering around in a rush of excitement, taking in everything. I barely noticed the lag teleporting me halfway back across the screen, until I was disconnected from the server. I wasn't able to log in again until the following day. At this point I was left with seriously mixed feelings, the disaster of the launch and the sweet euphoria of finally playing this game fighting for dominance.

Since then it's been a bit over a week. I'm still playing, but I'm not happy with the experience.

In D1 and D2, the gameplay was frenzied and frenetic. It always felt as thought your character was a moment from death, and you had to be ready with a potion or scroll of town portal to get out of danger. That feeling of split second timing is gone. Potions are only used sparingly, have been mostly replaced by health globes which you run over to use. Potions also have a cool down period, which makes combat more difficult than it should be when facing powerful creatures. Town portal is now a spell on your toolbar, and once triggered it charges up before activating. Moving your character will interrupt the casting. All this results in feeling like a spectator rather than a player, that whether you live or die is based on whether you can make your character run around in circles long enough to get away from mobs that are too big.

Even the characters movement has been slowed down, and the run button is gone. Couple this with the large size of the maps and it can take an age to complete some parts of the game. This is exacerbated by the fact that maps will reset after you disconnect, and disconnects happen automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity. This is a poor decision on Blizzard's part. I would like to be able to interrupt gameplay if I need to without worrying about getting back to the computer to move the mouse.

The loot drops in the first two acts are poor. There is little incentive to take loot back as most items yield less than 10 gold. Most magic items are less than 100, and rares less than 300. It's baffling that Blizzard would choose to change the loot mechanics as they are arguably the Diablo series' defining aspect. Instead we have a blacksmith, complete with an upgrade mechanic lifted straight from Blizzard's MMO titles, who can craft higher stat items. Of course you have to pay gold to upgrade him and access the higher stat items. These items require salvaged materials that you get from destroying magic, rare, and unique items. Most of these have a number of random magic properties. To date I have only used one, yes, one of these items as all the others have had useless random stats assigned. The amount of gold and magic items required to craft one of these items is ridiculous. At least D2 was honest about and called it gambling.

Then there's the length. Despite the thing feeling like you're wading through molasses most of the time, it's over all too quickly. But wait, it's OK because Blizz have helpfully included multiple difficulty levels. Each one is unlocked sequentially once the last mode is beaten so you can play it all over again for better loot and higher levels. Just in case that wasn't enough of an incentive, there are also further plot developments for some NPC's that only unfold in higher difficulties.

This is not an acceptable alternative to making a decent length game, Blizzard. You've have twelve years. TWELVE! You really need to do better. Unless of course you're holding back in anticipation of the - wait for it - EXPANSION PACK! I will play this through to the end. I've spent too much money, and waited too long not to. That said, I feel this has been a missed opportunity for Blizzard. It's more like "World Of DiabloCraft" than a true "Diablo III". Almost all the (technical) issues with this game could be fixed by just giving players the choice to have offline only characters. That way people who want to play a single player game (y'know, the majority who bought the damn thing) could play without lag destroying the experience.

2/10 (And thats only in recognition of the talented artists and designers who put their blood sweat and tears into this. The money men behind the online requirement/DRM and real money auction house... well, most of the internet has an opinion on you guys. Just google it).

The game is simply terrible. I can leave aside all the technical issues like error 37, DRM, Auction House unavailability, lack of true single player, ... I can even leave aside the blatant FRAUD commited by Blizzard in the form of false advertising by not including major parts of the game such as PvP, not delivering a finished AH, ... I can leave all that aside and more because in the end Diablo comes down to one thing and one thing only: loot. People would have never continued playing Diablo II if it didn't have such a great loot system. It allowed you as a player to experience the thrill of finding great items, but still made you work hard for it. There was a good balance, and even casual players could enjoy some of the more exclusive items every now and then. Blizzard has done away with this in favor of their money making scheme, the AH. However, they neglected the fact that the very heart of Diablo was the thrill of the items. I do have to add that a great factor contributing to replayability was the skill system. For example you could try to create characters that were a little more wacky or excentric but powerful in their own way. This, too, has been eliminated because every Barbarian of lvl X equals every other Barbarian of lvl X. No idea which idiot came up with that... Blizzard, Diablo was about the fun of hacking down monsters, the thrill of the items, and also, a little work. A little work put in by the player that gave you pride in the end. Meaning that your character was strong because you made it strong. Now, because you've taken away all of these key ingredients, nothing remains of what was once your masterpiece. And that really is a damn shame. Expand
