The game is terribly balanced, the difficulty is mostly based on the fact that you cannot zoom out and the monsters attacking you have greater range than the f-ing screen! Engine is terrible, DRM is a joke. I am hugely disappointed.

Problem whit connection in a single player game? ROTFL. If you give a game that requires being online you have to be prepared for that. Blizzard went back in development, and be able to apply solutions from StarCraft 2. Achivments only online, is a sick idea. = 3/10

It's ridiculous. Who in their right mind thought this was a great idea? Had I known it'd be like this, I would never have even entertained the idea of buying Diablo 3. But here I am, with a game just sitting on my desktop to serve no purpose other than to decorate it. As for the actual game itself, it feels so restrictive. in Diablo 2, if I happened to like 2 different skills, then I'd put points in both and that'd be the end of it. But in Diablo 3, if 2 skills are from the same branch, you can only pick one of them. Not only that, but that skill might not actually be as useful as another until you reach the level necessary to unlock the rune to boost up your skill. That to me is ridiculous, and really restricts the way I want to play my character. The classes aren't all that interesting, it feels like I've played those already. I really liked the classes of Diablo 2 they felt really different and had different purposes, but in Diablo 3 it seems like they just mixed a few elements of each classes, and the way you play D3's classes to me just feels all too similar with one another. The story itself isn't bad, nor is it the best. They did put some efforts into adding more to the world, but that's about it. Overall, I decided to give the game a 0. Why? Because I can't even play it. This is the first and last (Single-Player) game that I purchase with an always-on DRM. I bought a game to have fun, and I'm not. Expand

The story-line is dry, linear, predictable and could have been much, much better. Character class back-story/story-line is non existent. About the only time your character comes into the story-line is when he/she is narrating it; that's it - which sucks big time. The game should have had multiple endings, substantial choices that affected the story-line/characters, and more random/variety in quests but sadly it doesn't. A better story-line should be given each time you beat the game on a harder difficulty, or else why even play again. Maps are extremely linear, small, and very closed off. They are made just to funnel you to your next destination - nothing more. The games initial difficulty should not be called normal. Diablo I and II on normal were much more of a chanllenge than Diablo III's normal. Diablo III's normal feels like the game is dumbed down significantly for casual players and in fact is holding my hand every step of the way - in fact you will use potions about once every eight or so hours all the way to the ending of the game. This greatly takes away from my enjoyment and game play experience. Bosses battles are extremely lackluster, mediocre and poorly scripted. Aside from playing a different class the replay value is very linear at best. If the game had multiple endings/better endings for higher difficulties, and more variety in quests, gave the player choices that affected the game/ending and a substantial variety in more open and nonlinear maps then the replay value would be high. Art is too similar to WoW, and as such has a very cartoony kids friendly feel to it. In fact some of the animation was taken from wow. The music of the game has its moments but for the most part feels passive and dull. Single player games must be played online only. So if there servers are flooded or down you either experience massive lag which ruins your game play experience or you simply can't play at all. About the best thing I can say Diablo III has is the CG cinematic's which are wonderful too look at. I'd say this game deserves no more than a 7.5 at best.

The list could go on, and on, and on. Diablo 3 is basically a bad joke created by Blizzard to the Diablo audience. To call it WoW free2play is not an exaggeration. That is literally what it feels like. Nothing in this game was designed with the end user in game, save to allow it to be "playable" (not likable) by as many players as possible and to extract as much cash from them as possible via the "Real Money Auction House", which by the way has been indefinitely delayed because the playerbase is tanking so hard right now that they realize they need to focus everything to save it. They're trying, but they will be unsuccessful. Blizzard has been _permanently cripppled_ by its long stint/focus on WoW. They _actually believe_ these things are actually fun, otherwise the game would not have been released with such horrible flaws. If they cannot see the problems, they cannot fix them. I have asked for a refund because I am actually offended at how bad this game is, and I encourage anyone who bought it to do the same.

    Things they did wrong
    -----------------------------------
    1. DRM (you are required to be online 24/7 to play, even single player)

    2. Removed any customization with the skill tree AND Attribute tree (You are literally the same character as the millions others that play)

    3. The difficulty is a ****ing joke. A trained monkey could easily beat this game with ANY character.

    4. The auction house removes any desire/need to actually loot for awesome gear. (Acti-Blizz just milking it for more money after everyone realizes the games ****.)

    5. No more awesome 8 player nameable lobbies with PvP. (PvP has been scheduled to be released later on in a WoW like arena (****ing gay))

    6. The color scheme is ****ing ****ty as are the graphics for a game 12 YEARS in Development!!!!!!!!!!!

    7. The servers are a ****ing joke. I lag all the ****ing time on a rad ass connection so I know it's not me.
(makes trying to enjoy the single player a joke)

    8. The story itself is ****ing retarded. Lame cliches everywhere coupled with horrible voice acting leaves me vastly disappointed with, what was supposed, to be a game you could play solid and still enjoy for at least a month.

In summary, they have taken out the heart and soul of Diablo and replaced it with a Children's game. Don't indulge Activision or Blizz anymore...... I am personally boycotting these terrible game devs from now on. I encourage everyone who enjoyed Diablo 1 and 2 (Or good games) to do the same

Terrible game, end game is pointless and broken. The game has been abused from the beginning and a exploited to where a select group have free reign over the entire Auction House. The demand is only getting larger for act 3/4 items, whilst the supply is staying the same because the people who abused/exploited the game in the early stages are the only people who can obtain the gear.

One can satisfyingly get 20-40 hours out of this game beyond that you either have a set of friends who is doing this together, or just have no life. Seriously even if your just wasting your time sitting in front of a PC why would you keep grinding on this game? Go play anything else. Torchlight I is far more fun to endlessly grind on than this game. Story - ya ya I'll quit the the $20.00 vs. $60.00 thing for this one at least. The story wasn't bad, yes it is cheesy, etc. but so was the story in D1 and D2 I think the reviews saying the story is bad are missing the boat. This is a little dungeon crawler game it isn't some expansive RPG that one would epect a supper compelling story in. Overall the story was adequate and I'll leave it at that. Auction House - It has been up and down so often, several times all my items simply dissapeared, etc. and the real money AH is still not out at the time I'm writing this review. The idea of the real money AH is as exciting as a bank asking me to "insure" my FDIC insured account ... for money ... the real money AH should only be exciting if you work for blizzard. Other than that it adds nothing to the game at all. I'm sure this cash scam will continue though and more companies will add more and more elements like this in the coming years. My lengthy opinion about the game ... read if you like but be warned this is just pure catharsis for me that is all: Where to begin. Diablo III indeed had perhaps unattainable expectations to live up to. Having well over a decade to wait fans had high hopes and expectations for this game and that has perhaps muddied the waters a bit out on the internet. There is much ranting about both how terrible this game is or the other side the standard blizzard fanboys are gushing as usual.

My biggest criticism is simply this. How D3 turned out in its entirety is fine, if it would have been a $20.00 budget range game I'd have not a single complaint, in fact I'd be giving it a glowing review. At the $60.00 pricepoint though this game is terrible and a poor value. Comparing this game to the other $60.00 range games you get so much less value. Go play Torchlight I and look at how the core of the game works, I'm assuming that Torchlight II will actually be superior to Diablo 3 in pretty much every way. Those games are in the $20.00 price range. Don't interpret my focus on price to mean I'm a cheap gamer or poor. I spend several thousand dollars a year on games, I have no problem paying $60.00 for a game and do it routinely. I simply categorize games by price, the more you charge me the higher my expectations are going to be. This game is a minor league baseball game at a major league price. It is not worth $60.00 and as blizzard never really reduces the prices of their games ... so you can't wait and buy this later at a lower price and there is another beef I have with blizzard.

I bought the game, I put in 40ish hours and I feel I basically ground my monies worth out of the game but it wasn't a good value for me at all. I played 2 characters (Barb and DH) up to 60 and am so sick of the game I don't care how awesome the expansions are or how cool the promised PVP is ... there is nothing that could pull me back to it. Thus I've uninstalled the game and given it to a friend who I strongly urged not to waste money on it. As for the story, etc. I'd challenge anyone with real complaints about that to go back and play D2 (almost no one could do that these days it is such a dated game now) and look at the story there or in D1. What story? Some cheesy Dungeons and Dragons campaign idea converted into a video game. This isn't an epic literary work, it is mindless video game junk. Why do people even get uppity about story in a game like this? This is a little dungeon crawler, about hack and slash and loot ... period ... the story was as good as one should expect for a game like this.

For me, the second point that made D3 is the importance of the items, which surely comes from the presence of the House of Auctions, while the heroes stats are almost irrelevant: how can one call D3 "Action-RPG" while it is just a "click mosters and buy items" game?
If it is not enough, the graphics hasn't any mood compared to the dark one from Diablo 2, as it came from a game of 5 or 6 years ago, and you can not play really alone, and you must have a fast and cheap Internet connection to play decently.

The only problem is, I didn't pay for a game that I can't play when I want to play it. I understand the need for DRM, but not allowing for solo play off-line was the worst decision made in the history of gaming. For that, they get a zero. If you can't play it, you can't get rated.

    - Why does every goblin has to stand in a group of (elite-)packs (or it's appearance is nerfed)
    - Why do you have to play each character as a tank?

I liked beeing a GlassCannon DemonHunter with high DPS. This is not whining. I'm just thinking about the good old DotA, where agi Heroes were VERY fragile, but hit hard which i liked.
This applies for all the other classes, too (except barbarians). Either you focus on survivability or on dps (if you only have a limited budget!). Otherwise you're stuck in act1 which gets dull especially with low drop rates for good items.

From what i see the survivability isn't much of an issue for monks/barbs, but monks always have to worry about their cooldowns and don't make enough damage, which is frustrating for them.

I don't know that much about Witch Doctors and Wizards but as far as i can see they are too fragile and you can't enjoy playing them because your damage output is poor. This would be a problem if you were allowed to die - which you aren't because the repair costs has been inreased about 600% (if I'm coorect). Blizzard lowered the repair costs for damage inflicted durability loss by 50% (afterwards) because they wanted to make clear that dying isn't a part of the game, which is ok. BUT that's still 300% more repair costs than before just for playing through the game without dying.

In conclusion (but just for my act3 Inferno game experience):
If you only have limited resources (Gold and time to play) the only class which you still can enjoy to play are Barbarians. This doesn't mean they need to be nerfed. Instead other classes have to me adjusted so that you can enjoy playing them again.
Every other class is hard work to play and only makes really fun if you have VERY good gear which isn't possible due to limited resources.

This game is ridiculous for this day and age in the gaming world. The graphics, the story line, the mechanics, etc., etc., etc. It feels like I am playing the original Neverwinter Nights, (which was a wonderful game for its time, I might add) but MUCH worse, because it is completely and utterly linear. And again, the graphics are straight out of the mid-90s. What the heck were they thinking?

I spent $59.99 on a pre-order for this game, expecting something ground-breaking. What I got was the hugest disappointment I have ever experienced in the age of computer games. I feel as though Blizzard reached their hands in my wallet and pulled out three $20 bills when I wasn't looking.

If you haven't purchased the game yet, heed my advice and the rest of the negative reviews here ... DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

The skill loadout would have been a good idea for some brand new game, but most Diablo fans wanted the in depth character skill customization Diablo 2 offered. The mods to each ability just feel lazy on the developer's part as well. Item stats are randomized on even high end items, and unlike Diablo 2 they are mostly pure stats. This just makes gearing very boring. And finally they seem to have intentionally designed it to make it as easy as possible for players to leech xp without doing any of the work. If they aren't in the same zone they still get some xp, can't be kicked, and will get summoned to bosses automatically when you start the fight.

This game is fun for a little while, but ultimately disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a huge fan of the Diablo series (was 1 of my favorites) & logged countless hours playing the 1st 2 Diablo games. D3, however, is a terrible game in almost every imaginable way. Here's why not to buy D3:

1)Maps: essentially not randomly generated (as they have been in past games). Most areas are static (e.g. the overworld), & some are 'randomly generated' & have 2-4 possible layouts - these areas could be more accurately described as 'randomly chosen' from predetermined layouts. This is a big change from the infinite map layouts previous Diablo games could have.

2)No open world exploration/free play option. In addition to no random maps, gameplay is locked into quest progression. In D2, a player could start a game in any act & travel anywhere in that act or any other act. In D3 a player chooses a quest & creates a game based on that quest, having progressed through the act as if you were still on that quest. If you already killed a boss in the act, they remain dead. To travel to another act, the player must exit the game & create a new 1 by selecting a different quest.

3)The game is linear/mechanical/repetitive. Diablo games have previously been designed to be played for years after release (D2 online community is still sizable ). D3's lack of random maps quickly leads to areas becoming tedious/boring as they are so repetitive. Worse yet, quest objectives are shown as blinking dots on the minimap (as if you couldn't remember your way around after playing identical areas many times over) so you never have to think about what the objective is or which direction you should be heading. For the most part, all RPG elements have been removed from the series (which is supposed to be an action RPG).

4)Auction house: Many people argue it has ruined the game's economy, or that it promotes a pay-to-win playstyle. It is also the main way to trade in-game items & the UI is so terrible that it takes a very long time to do so.

5)Nephalem Valor: forces people to stick with a build for a long time or be punished - being forced to choose between more loot/rewards or more freedom/fun (i.e. being rewarded for having less fun - a game should promote fun). 6)Significantly increased item repair costs strongly discourage people from attempting difficult content which makes the game boring/monotonous. The repair costs don't affect people who already have lots of good gear & are farming acts 3/4 & punish people who don't have much gold & are just starting to gear up.

7)Elite mobs: designed to be what players farm for end-game items. These mobs have the same 25 randomly chosen abilities (up to 4 different affixes each encounter) across all 4 acts. For the most part every fight is similar/easy & it feels like you are running all over all 4 acts just so to engage in the same boss fight over & over again - there is little diversity between acts.

    8)Story: absolutely terrible.

9)No end game content - nothing to keep players interested/playing for years to come.

10)Itemization/characterization: boring - classes are not unique/use the exact same items. Item affixes have been simplified/dumbed down. Affixes such as fire, lightning, holy, etc. damage no longer has secondary effects such as crits adding DoT, stunning targets, dealing extra damage to undead - they are instead completely cosmetic.

11)The game has a very cheesy/cartoony/family friendly art style (not referring to content) & has abandoned the more mature look of its predecessors. D3's artistic direction does not really allow for interesting/scary/whatever models of demons. 1 of the better models, Azmodan, was still less scary than Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Blizz said they think the game has a timeless, stylized, aesthetic (like they say about WoW.. but it's not suited to D3).

13)This game borrowed too much from WoW rather than from previous Diablo games.

12)No open world PvP. Diablo I & II had fun open world PvP. D3 will feature only arena PvP (whenever Blizz decides to finally add PvP).

14)The game looks, feels, & plays like a game from around 2005 - it's dated.

15)The game just generally feels rushed/incomplete (& in many ways is incomplete, e.g. no PvP at launch & no date set for when it will be implemented).

If you're not a fan of the Diablo series/looking to waste 20 hours or so - this game should keep you adequately entertained for that long. If you played Diablo I/II & are looking for another game to spend countless hours playing over many years, this is definitely not your game. D3 does not seem broken beyond repair, but I'm not sure Blizz is prepared to put in the necessary work. Some issues (e.g. map randomization) would be far too difficult to change at this point - developers have specifically said they will not be correcting this. Recommendation: check out D3 after it has seen a year or 2 of patching - it may be in a good state by then.

It went from a dungeon crawler, like 1 and 2, to a game that is painfully linear. Blizzard has taken a game that you could play without using the internet and placed it on overloaded servers that they do not provide support for. The lag from the aforementioned servers makes the game virtually unplayable at certain times, significantly decreasing the enjoyment of the player. The dynamics of the game itself have not changed despite the progressions in graphics capabilities and platforms. Blizzard chose to utilize a platform that both Mac and PC can use despite the fact that Direct X is significantly more common among PC gamers (no true gamer owns a Mac... they're garbage). This platform causes PC users' graphics cards to reach temperatures that not even BF3 induces. Now for the game itself, you cannot use your own keybinds, such as WSAD for movement, you're limited to four slots for abilities, not to mention the fact that there are numerous bugs within the game itself that limit performance. Diablo 3 was turned into a pure RNG game that has gear so poorly itemized throughout the entire game that it displays only the utmost disparaging incompetency in the designers. This game was far too simplistic, the characters never stop talking, the creatures and abilities are all from World of Warcraft (even with similar names to boot), this game lacks originality in every single form. They even had the audacity to reuse the Diablo 2 soundtrack for Diablo 3. I searched tirelessly for any small sign of originality or enjoyment in any aspect of this game. To my dismay, there was not a single one.
For the fanboys out there (most of which who were born long after Diablo 2 was released), Blizzard is making this game pay-to-win. That's right! Pay-to-win! So you can use your parents credit cards and buy gear from the auction house! Rumor has it, these items will not be poorly itemized, and you get that extra special feeling when you show your friends how awesome those pixels are that you payed real money for!

Why would you even pay $60 for a game anyway? All the games I have hundreds and hundreds of hours logged on (besides the 1 mmo I ever seriously played) cost me $20 or under and are much higher quality and better maintained than most $60 throwaway titles whose sole reason for being is to rake in cash. (Call of Duty's modern warfare series comes to mind as the most recent example of this.)

The game doesn't reward you at all. You have to play like 50 hours just to get a decent item you can sell for 20$. This is below the minimum wage in China. Blizzard want to turn their player base into a slave labor, so they can make out like a bandit. This game is work, it's not a game it's work.

What an unmitigated disaster. Blizzard should apologize to their fans for this atrocious attempt at a sequel to Diablo 3. Why the game is bad has already been stated enough times to be clear. I just want to give voice to the overwhelming disappointment that this game has wrought on fans of this series.

While the core game play itself seems bug free, everything else from the client, to logging in, to the auction house, to even doing in-game trading is finicky and simply just plain bad - untested, unfinished product. At the heart of the game is the Diablo hack and slash combat we all know and love, and the skills and classes feel good. From this aspect the game excels very well. However, and unfortunately for Blizzard, the fact the servers were horrible on the first week, and still lag constantly, the auction house which continually gives you error codes whenever you try to buy an item or sell an item, the incredibly short, predictable, and tired storyline that any elementary school student could have come up with, the incredible shortness of Act 4, and the quite clearly 4 year old graphics engine combine to give a rating - 5/10. The game hits all the points we wanted from D2, and that's not saying much considering that game is 12 years old. Feels like a Diablo 2 expansion pack more than a new full game. Expand

The amount of hot fixing that has been made to the game shouldn't have if Blizzard would have originally listened to the community. The legendary drops were mediocre compared to that of rares. Diablo 3 becomes a grinding mess after finishing Hell mode. It seems it was set up to prevent the player from advancing through inferno mode keeping them to do endless runs trying to obtain decent gear. Many players found ways to make this easier and Blizzard either changed or nerfed their methods. It also seems classes were and possible are not balanced. While a hunter could take out enemies in inferno mode with one or two hits, another player using any other class could have much more difficulty on doing so. It made the player base just run around with DH characters instead of actually offering variety. No PvP upon release is another reason why this game has failed and the overpowered DH must be the reason why. The combat system is basic and not as complex as the other Diablos and falls far behind them. The only plus to this game is the RMAH and AH where players can sell items for real money or player money. I have to say after playing Diablo for 3 months I left the game and never looking back. Overall the forced online feature, is enough to destroy this game completely. Due to fear of piracy, Blizzard has kneejerked a reaction which causes true gamers, you know, the fans of D3, to reject this game. The DRM protection method is causing more harm than good. Sure, it protects your account from being hacked, at the expense of your account never getting to play a game you paid for. Servers can't stay online, forums can't even stay open, and the rising bitterness of customers are turning this into one of the worst video game launches in history.

How have they done this? With the INCREDIBLY RETARDED DRM system that requires a constant log in to play. All save data is stored in a persistent online system, making this effectively an MMO. There is NO Diablo 3 single player. And so for those of us who cant afford super fast internet, Diablo 3 is unplayable. UNPLAYABLE! No matter what Blizzard says or those who CAN play cos they have fast internet say. So unless you have a minimum of a 1 MB ADSL connection, don't bother buying this. You won't be able to play it. The server lag will frustrate you into smashing your own PC.

PS: I believe Blizzard have achieved a first in gaming. SERVER LAG IN A SINGLE PLAYER GAME.

Total waste of $60. This game should be on the under 5$ shelf. Graphics look great for a game that came out in the 90's. Skills? What skills, there are no skills/sill points its all handheld point click to give the illusion of customization. I don't think I need to get into the lag and rampant dc issues, people have already covered that quite well here. What the game really seems toTotal waste of $60. I'd give it a 4 or 5 if it supported true single player. Expand

So I'm actually not basing my score on the server/DRM issues (even though they're unacceptable), if DRM helps put an end to all the cheating (and piracy) then I can live with an outage here and there. Unfortunately, this game still has a lot of significant problems. Unfortunately, this game still has a lot of significant problems. In terms of gameplay, there's nothing wrong with the basic formula: kill stuff , get loot, etc., and there's some fun mechanics to learn for each character. The major problem is that the addition of the auction house has totally ruined the scaling of the game, and I'm talking about the normal (legitimate) one, not the one that uses real money. When you put millions of people online at the same time and let them share every single item with each other, the "mega rare" items aren't so rare anymore, and competition drives the prices down...at the end of Act II I decided to spend about 45 minutes buying AH items (which was actually the most engaging and fun part of the game so far), and ended up with a maxed-out gear set for next to nothing. This was awesome at first, but then I proceeded to waltz through the second half of the game in a few hours. After a certain point it's just boring when you walk into the final boss's room without any preparation and beat him in a single try. I'm halfway through Nightmare difficulty and it hasn't really been any more difficult, although I expect at some point it might cross my mind to recruit a friend for some backup. Regardless, claiming that "the game only really starts on the second playthrough" is honestly one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard, and I'll never know why it flies for Blizzard when it wouldn't fly for any other developer on the face of the earth...for 60 bucks, there is a very distinct lack of content here.

The game being too short or too easy wouldn't be so bad if the game's story or graphics held up, but this isn't really the case either. The graphics are...well, unimpressive (even on max settings), and if you liked the whole "dark fantasy" feel of the series, prepare to be very disappointed because the art direction of this game is much closer to WoW than any Diablo game (there's even a few scenes that feel ripped out of SC2, but that's another story). Granted I was 14 when D2 came out, but I remember some of the areas being pretty creepy and grim...this is much more cartoony and vibrant. The sense of dread and loneliness is gone, there's NPC's everywhere and they really hurt the tone of the game. There's even awkward moments of attempted humor (I don't remember the exact wording, but a major boss literally says some variation of "I hate vegetables" as you fight him). It's very tame, if they removed the small amounts of blood in this game it could easily be rated Teen. Combine this with sub-par voice acting and a routine storyline, it makes for a bland experience.

So...obviously Blizzard did not spend all their time and money to deliberately make a mediocre game, so I only have one explanation for why this game is so disappointing: to me, every decision made throughout the development process seems to be about getting a mass audience involved in the Diablo franchise at the expense of the depth and artistic integrity that the hardcore fans love. They will make a killing on this game, especially when the real-money auction house hits. Some people might even claim to love it, but at the end of the day it's really hard to consider it anything other than a blown opportunity, and a sad way to conclude a wait of over 10 years.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
