It's the same boring thing over and over and over again, this is more a DLC than whatever.
The same rush for new itens, hours and hours doing the same stuff to get better gear to kill monsters with huge HP.

For this price tag I expect much more content, honestly unless you feel like you have to buy this, wait for the price to drop or give this one a miss! Last time I paid good money for a short expansion like this was for Half Life: Blue Shift, which was good but too short as well and the reviews made a point of that! It baffles me that RoS gets such good reviews. Expand

After all this time, it's back to the Diablo roots of actually being able to kill for your own equipment.

The new Act is atmospherically back to the doom and gloom we started this series with, which has been greatly appreciated by long term fans of the series. This is the dark Diablo we grew up with, where evil is actually evil and not some insanely stupid butterfly with magic powers.

The crowning jewel on the entire expansion would have to be adventure mode. This expansion absolutely redeems Diablo back into the world of proper rogue-like games, with a completely randomized set of levels in the nephalem rifts. This change more than anything else has brought me back to the game with ravenous hunger for loots.

Some of the changes are a little unwelcome, as trade has been significantly stifled entirely in this iteration, but when playing with friends it's still possible to swap legendary items within the same game, for a time anyway.

Overall, this is much much closer to the Diablo 3 game I have wanted ever since the D3V launch.

After sinking 30 hours or so since RoS launched I think I can safely say Reaper of Souls was a huge step in the right direction for Diablo 3. At first glance one act, 10 more levels, 1 new skill per class(excluding runes) and 1 new class, along with a new game mode and some more items may not seem like its worth the 40$ but if you're thinking that I don't think you've played diablo enough. This game has never been about getting through the final act on normal mode then thinking you've done enough. Nothing happens until you hit level 70 which isn't a tall task in itself taking probably only 10 hours maximum.

Diablo has ALWAYS been about gear hunting; finding better gear and then finding even more gear to make your clear times/boss killings faster allowing you to try a higher difficulty. Before Reaper of Souls the best way to efficiently farm for gear was to reset your storyline quests and play through the entire thing all over again for the 100% chance of a legendary equip at the very end. Reaper of Souls introduces a new game mode; Adventure mode.

Adventure mode takes away the running through each act at the games pace and allows you to go wherever you want and take on bounties for exp/gold/nephalem shards and blood shards. Blood shards can be used to purchase unidentified items that have a chance to be legendary, nephalem shards, once enough of them are collected allow you to enter a map filled with higher tier mobs which themselves have a higher than normal chance of legendaries. You also get horadric caches for finishing a set of bounties in an Act which itself has a chance to give legendary gear. All of these plus the previous resetting quests method still available is a large improvement on the previous method.

The crusader class is a tank but to be honest like anything in Diablo you can really play it however you want, though playing it against the typical build type makes things more challenging (my crusader is pure crit chance/dmg screw tanking!) it's always doable. Along with crusader new skills were introduced to each other job which all have their uses.

The 10 level increase at first glance also doesn't seem like a whole lot but if you dive deeper into what 10 levels really means to Diablo you'll find out there's a lot more behind it.

The 10 levels gives access to a whole trove of new armor/weapon types and skins as well as legendary gear. The access to more gear means higher item levels which makes your character much stronger and able to access higher levels of difficulty. The difficulty options have been changed to accommodate the much higher damage on characters in their mid 60s to 70s so it won't be like you just hit 70 and are able to tackle Torment 6 (which is Diablos highest difficulty). It gives players who hit 60 and farmed gear to be able to access high levels of Torment difficulty a renewed reason to play the game because they have an advantage but not enough to allow them to stomp through the game.

A new artisan (the mystic) was added too that allows people to transmogrify gear which allows them to make their gear look how they want and you can access more skins by finding legendary items. The mystic also has the ability to enchant gear which allows you to replace one property of gear which can turn a mediocre piece of gear into a fairly decent one (if you have the right materials to do it of course).

Though the game does have some minor issues such as the difficulty scaling in the 60s takes a high spike around 63-64ish that most people are unaware of which can lead to a lot of unexpected deaths and frustration. The crusader class also is a jack of all trades but a master of none and could use some tweaking to make it a little better. The price tag is a little steep for some of the more causal players of Diablo but otherwise I think it's well worth it.

Reaper of Souls is a huge improvement on Diablo 3 and since the games launch the dev team has really tried to make the game better and better and hopefully they continue to do so.

Is it the game D3 should have been in the beginning? Probably not, but it's certainly much closer than it was before.

The new expansion for Diabo 3, Reaper of Souls, improves the gameplay of the original game in many ways. Gone are the days of having to suffer through the same Act facing the same baddies; the introduction of Adventure Mode adds more replayability to the game by varying the play through bounties. Bounties are specific missions that the game offers to you, and upon completion you are rewarded with rift keys. Find 5 rift keys and you may enter a rift, a fancy way of saying randomized dungeon with enemy combinations not seen in the regular game. A very good enhancement to the game as a whole and does improve the lasting appeal of the game.
Loot 2.0 is exponentially better than it's predecessor. Blizzard seems to have taken the "less is more" approach to loot, as now enemies drop less loot, but the quality is far better. My level 60 Monk was finding magic and rare items of equal or better value to my Legendaries from the original Diablo 3, and the same can be said for my barbarian character and wizard. Also, utilizing the "smart drop" system they have implemented, Blizzard has ensured that a legendary drop will peak your interest, as the chances of not only one dropping but one dropping that caters towards the character you are playing as has dramatically increased incentive to play. And the new mystic NPC allow for enchanting an item, effectively changing one of it's stats in the hopes of getting a better one; as well as one of my new favorite, yet very simple features, Transmogrification, which is a difficult way of saying "changing how you're stuff looks." Even though it's a simple concept, I love the idea of being able to change the aesthetic of my character.

The campaign part of the expansion does feel like more of a DLC addition than a true expansion; it's short (about 4-5 hours long depending on the difficulty), but that's not to say it isn't enjoyable. As someone who really likes the lore of the Diablo universe, there is a treasure trove of history and lore here that I truly enjoyed discovering. The art direction is great, dark tones contrast the lighter blue of the allies of death. It is indeed a good looking, polished graphical expansion.

Even though this review may paint a rosy picture of ROS, the truth is that I don't believe D3 will ever be as good as I feel D2 was. The removal of a point based skill system, and the subsequent implementation of the rune system D3 uses, seems to be nothing more than an illusion to hide the lack of depth in the game. I can oftentimes swap runes on my skills on the fly, with no repercussion or positive differences noticeable on my character. In terms of gaming, there is a very shallow "build" pool for characters, and ROS only seems to alleviate this matter slightly. Now, with the revamped Paragon system, I could see how in the future, after massive amounts of time have been sunk into the game, one could create a truly unique character, but for the majority of players the depth of a true RPG just isn't there. Blizzard took away the consequence/reward of character choices, and in turn took away the complexity and uniqueness of the D3 characters. It is obvious that with ROS they are hoping to reverse the affects of this decision to a certain extent, but for now their changes to the game with ROS are a small fish in a big pond: too small to make a true dent.

Bottom line: I find myself drawn back to D3 after many, many months of not playing, enjoying the expansion overall. But I can't imagine it holding my attention for more than a month, tops. While it is a vast improvement to D3 pre expansion, it is still nowhere near the echelon of quality we have come to expect from Blizzard. It's fun, but for how long?

To all the haters that claim this expansion is a paid bug fix patch, it isn't. You didn't have to buy Reaper of Souls to take advantage of the changes made in Patch 2.0.x, so stop claiming that.

The additions of Adventure Mode and Nephalem Rifts give Diablo 3 far more end game value than the original release had, thus justifying, in my opinion, the somewhat short Act V storyline.

The combination of the Loot 2.0 changes with the Enchanting function of the new artisan, the Mystic, makes finding and then, if necessary, tailoring new gear to enhance your playstyle much easier and not tied to the original release's "Auction House Tycoon sub-game." Critics who say the Loot 2.0 changes were a stopgap and that the loot wall is just pushed back further, I'd like to remind people that not all item affixes are applicable to the calculated metrics of Damage, Toughness, and Healing. There are affixes which affect certain damage types, skills, utility, movement, etc. and cannot be accurately reflected in those three "upgrade/downgrade" metrics, so Blizzard opted to not mislead players by attempting to shoe-horn them into those metrics. These are the affixes which ignorant critics have missed when they claim the loot wall was just moved back a bit, as these affixes are build-enabling effects that invite players to redefine their playstyle in order to achieve greater power over their enemies on the field of battle and the streets of Westmarch. What many people fail to realize is that the changes made with the Loot 2.0 system have effectively removed the one-size-fits-all cookie-cutter mentality which many players were forced to assume in their approach to certain classes. Are there still builds that are widely used? Yes, but the diversity of viable builds for each of the classes has increased dramatically with the advent of these build-shaping legendary affixes.

The announcement right at the expansion's launch that Seasons, a new game mode akin to Diablo II's ladder system, will be added to Reaper of Souls as part of the next major patch was a big win for players who were leaning on Blizzard hard for the better part of two years to deliver this sought-after feature. It definitely shows that Diablo III's development team is very aware of players' desires and willing to satisfy them where they can.

The "organizational" features added by RoS, Communities and Clans, have really made the game feel more social, which is something it was lacking in the original release. The announcement that the development team is working on bringing some sort of trading functionality to Clan members makes this social feature more than just a custom chat channel with special username flair.

Giving extra points for the expansion's smooth launch is justified because, in this day and age, digital downloads and dedicated multiplayer servers have made it incredibly difficult for studios to deliver a stable launch on Day 1, with all of the extra capacity which would normally be required to deal with the incredible traffic but may never be even close to fully utilized again. Building that capacity up can be a massive expense for the company, so you need to accept that either your launch experience could suck or you may be asked to pay more money for the game. Blizzard delivered a launch without either of those downsides, so THAT is worthy of praise.

All in all, Reaper of Souls is a phenomenal expansion pack which will continue to deliver additional features in the future and sets up a second expansion pack VERY nicely. Bravo to the entire Diablo development team and all of the other Blizzard teams which worked on the game!

They whine about the prize tag but forget that LOD, the Diablo 2 expansion offered less and didn't change the game like this expansion changes D3.

They overhauled Loot. They overhauled the difficulty system. They revamped crafting and made it enjoyable. They completely remade almost every skill and rune. They added elemental damage to runes. They added new mechanics such as pools of reflection and nephalem glory globe system. In the pre patch alone. And no, you can't look at the pre patch and the expansion separately, since the pre patch is a platform for the expansion.

    With the expansion you get:
One huge and amazing act with its quests, music, everything.
New awesome class with completely new skills and rune sets.
New artisan - the Mystic, which is huge.
Adventure mode - which is basically a whole new game that takes advantage of whole content of the game. The replayability with this mode is infinite.
Whole bunch of awesome new legendaries and sets which will enable different build possibilities.

Now compare what I wrote with the "0" reviews and their absence of arguments and points.

So, in an attempt to squeeze the fun from the original title, my now almost 16 years old cousin bought this "expansion" and invited me to test it just like last time. The result was obviously better than the original title, but not by far: the new class was interesting in concept, and at first it looked pretty awesome, but we couldnt get a hold of that feeling completely, as the skill system is awful, and we cannot customize him. Note that you could release the assasin from d2 itself, but you wouldnt get an awesome "charachter" feeling when you have no choice over the development of said "charachter". It's not an ARPG its an AG. The lvl cap raise was something standard in Blizzard, and the loot offered in the previous patch, "the loot 2.0" wasnt even a feature of this "expansion", except for the new items it brings, which is standard in "expansions". So it only remains the new arc, which is not that bad at least not as far as we got (we got bored after an hour or so), but in my opinion it could be something out of a DLC rather than an "expansion". So, you can get this for WHAT? 40 bucks?. Insane. You can get 10 lvls more, some more loot to grind, an average plotted but very long side quest, some runes and skills, and a new class, which seems pretty awesome, but suffers from the horrible game mechanichs making it completely boring after an hour of gameplay. That, my friends is a 10 bucks DLC for me, not an "expansion". Blizzard should have looked at their first works. Those were some expansions, and at that time, expansions didnt have to include much more content beacuse of the games being shorter, yet they included far enough. So, the night ended on frustration again, and with my cousin being almost 16 years old, I couldnt get him to write a childish rant like last time, so this time we had not fun, and I am writing this rant alone and somewhat sad. Im also thinking about playing some Diablo 2 just for the nostalgia feeling, but I know if I do, I'll stay playing, because it is a fantastic game. Expand

As people already pointed out, the loot 2.0 is not that much of difference.. still much too many boring yellow items, which willl never be viable. Same problem like with d3 classic (only difference: numbers grow really big now which is such a bad design choice, because you lose any left relation too any value.. don't know how many life or dps of any of my chars has, because with the next item it could be 100k more or less, so it feels kind of arbitary. even all chars can reach the same amount of life.. no RPG feeling there). Next bad choice is to put mainstats on items, so if these two mainstats aren't there the item is basically crap and since these numbers get so high you don't really care about the value. So the Itemization isn't even close as diversified as d2 lod. In my oppinion that's the biggest problem with the game.

    What would make the clue?
    - Get that mainstats off the items and back to be manually distributed. Give barbs for example reasons to put points in dex (increased blockchance, attackrating and stuff like that). Give different hp amounts for vit points for each class, that would eliminate the need for 30% enhanced dmg taken for wizards, wds and so on.
    - Make rare items more rare, diversified and overall viable (not only the legendarys with special affix)
    - Make all legendary remarkable for a special stat, which could only be reached if you put off the mainstats of these items
    - Bring back more RPG feeling (stat requirement for weapons, armors, cap for resistances, life values for casters lower than for meeles, any kind of stat points...)

All these changes wouldn't affect the casual gamers and enhance the fun for everybody who cares about game depth!

To be clear, I wouldn't care about all this if wouldn't have loved d2 so much and wouldn't see that potential in d3 thrown away for no good reason...

Loot 2.0 has given back to Diablo its known reward mechanic, tho i must say the game still drops legendary in a fashion more often then it should, but no damage here...your yellow items will top that legendary after some levels. Set items are hard to find. Very hard (to me, at least). Didn't play the Act V, but from what i've heard, it's the best so far. The way the crusader fights, his dialogues, even the way he looks, remind me very much from D2 paladins. There is some room for improvement, as always, but the game now is fun and you easily get addicted to it. Sure, they could made more side quests for the first 4 Acts, but as it is, you'll have some fun with the crusader. The maps still are a bit confusing, specially if you expect something as linear as D2 maps, but they do the job. Too bad Blizzard lost opportunity to add more content in old places. Would be nice to get off the sewers in Caldeum and make some quest at ground level, inside the city, for a change. And the items could have more....personality, as they had in D2. Sometimes, a 4 gem socketed normal flail was much better than any rare or magical weapon at that level. The font they use to describe the items on floor is too small, comparing to D2. That font gave much more visibilty to your loot, since its size and rectangular background helped in terms of visualization. The way it is now, sometimes you pick items and don't even now what you got or even if you got until you open your inventory. I hope they fix this on the next patch/expansion. Nonetheless, the game is back on its track. Give it a shot, if you are D2 fan. You'll enjoy it. Expand

However the great launch day and implementation of changes is kinda offset by the lack of genuine content. Act 5 was artistically beautiful, but the story line was very light and easily duct taped the first 4 acts. Crusader adds a very nice niche for what was missing from group game play and some of the more iconic paladin style moves. The passives for each character add a new layer of something much desired from the next tier of leveled characters. The active skills have been re-tuned for most classes to offer true variety than just cookie cutter builds.

The reason this expansion gets a 6 is because of outstanding issues unsolved and the new blizzard-activision approach to "content creation". Act 5 is mediocre in length at best and is drawn out by having spawns stop you every 5 feet in unavoidable intersections. 'Adventure mode' is a cop-out for revising old content in what would considered a "WoW-esque" approach to updating old content to be relevant beyond the first play through. There are times the Dev's humor shines but each boss fight seemed modestly opposing.

While the addition of new legendaries is great, the influx of level scaled legendaries makes it seems like there is very little actual variety. The legendaries that do not have flavour text often seem inferior and the primary stats still do not calculate damage correctly for stats such as "% more poison damage". More often then not everyone I know is utterly disappointed they received the 67-69 or 57-59 version of legendaries because of low stats, baffling itemization, or the fact a yellow in a level will likely replace your current existing weapon. Within a week of play leveling hardcore alts, I had managed to get 8 different versions of crushbane, 4 in one sitting.

The game is great for playing co-op yet they switched the game from ease of trade focused, to zero online trade policy....which is absolutely ridiculous for a game about grinding and finding loot.
With the class specific itemization I am sure to get the right loot if i play solo yet not to get any hand me downs as a demon hunter from any class that isn't a monk. Gems are always in ample supply yet you cannot trade them in order to prevent them being given to low level noobs and breaking their difficulty experience. Well then why did they include -18 level modifiers to let people use level 70 rares at 52.

It is rather all around disappointing once you finish act 5 and start your solo and group-solo trek into Torment 5-6. All you can do now is grind your adventure quests for key fragments and pretend there exists a chance of getting a rare that beats flavour text legendaries.

The game is still full of lag. This expansion is a waste of money. And this game is still pay to win in design, you need lots of those tradable crafting materials to get a good level 70 item

Loving it been playing 20+ hours of this and I haven't even felt the slightest boredom. Now that everything been fixed and a new mode and playable race has been added d3 actually is fun again. (well fun for once)

After finishing Act V and played a bit with advanture mode and with Crusader I think it's a good game. Good one but a bit too expensive, but hey its blizzard and everybody knows that blizzardis the biggest money suker in the world. I like the new drop system and the new difficulty system too, and act v is much more darker then the others i like it too. It's not superb it's just good, nice game.

    Same old, same old fail.

This game will be some fun for a few weeks, then back to utter fail. Still not even a shadow of Diablo 2.

Incredible game with an extreme responsive combat engine and the usual Blizzard polish. D3 ROS managed to do what nobody thought: complete change and overhaul of the entire Original game and make it a winner.
The only "real" complaints I see is the price of 40 bucks for the expansion. THEN you know the game is a winner. Because frankly RoS in its end game offers randomised loot adventures

I have NO idea what these 1 ratings mean as these guys should get their heads examined.

This is both a review of the expansion and the current state of the game.
I must commend Blizzard on working hard to address most of the concerns that players had with the original launch of D3. In it's current state, the game has come a long way. It may never reach the level of D2, but it's far better than when it first launched. While a small part of me misses the AH, it is ultimately a

I must commend Blizzard on working hard to address most of the concerns that players had with the original launch of D3. In it's current state, the game has come a long way. It may never reach the level of D2, but it's far better than when it first launched. While a small part of me misses the AH, it is ultimately a good thing to have removed it. I never wanted to grind for gold to buy items I needed to progress. The Loot 2.0 system is light years better than loot drops were at launch.
I haven't yet finished the expansion, but it has quite a fun feel to it, with many more side diversions than the original. The story line isn't anything groundbreaking, but the art, animation and voice acting are all top notch, as we've come to expect.
All in all, if you hated the original D3, this may not change your mind, but I suggest at least logging in to check out how much things have changed. You might be surprised how much better it is.

1 act 1 class for 40$ is just too few. Still no endgame. Also, BoA will kill the game. Basically everything Kripp says in his review is true. Surely people are hooked now and will be for some days, but in a couple of weeks even the slower one will realize the trick.

At last! Diablo III became the game I was looking forward to. Reaper of Souls does more than just improve the original – it reinvents it and helps it reclaim the hack’n’slash throne. [05/2014, p.50]

Heaps of new content provides hours of fun, even though the campaign could use a little extension. But if you’re a fan, this is a must. [Issue#241]

Blizzard did the obvious: literally transformed Diablo 3 to what it should have been from the start. It took them some time, but finally Blizzard got the message and moved finally to the right direction. While we expect the next expansion, fans of action / rpg can now sleep peacefully ... the king is here!
