Just finished the game, enjoyed the majority of it. The ending was a bit lame and the unskippable cut scene's in certain spots are some of my complaints. Also could have more action scene's, since it was a tad easy. Never had any challenging battles, even the one at the end even thou I had no idea what was going on I finished it on the first try. Regardless of the time scale between releases, DE:HR retains all of its predecessors tropes. (Thankfully not falling victim to popular modern game designs practice, that every game must look and play like the most successful of that particular genre.) Although DE:HR has a lot to be desired in the graphical front, it isn't a bad look game, but don't expect it to be winning any awards any time soon. Aesthetically it seems to take a very stark approach. Which might sound like a negative comment, but it's not, it defines the Mise en scène. When mixed with the darkness of each city and the eerie glow of the street lights, you'll forget all about of low res/ low poly the game looks from time to time. So, to sum up. Go buy the game. Awesome game, thoroughly enjoyed it and played it through twice (2nd run was no kills for achievement), my only criticisms would be the inventory and some slightly wooden voice acting.

Pretty much a revamp of the original deus ex. Same atmosphere, stooopid AI, flat bland textures, air ducts, hacking... But all said, it's mildly enjoyable. Surprising the lousy framerate I get with such blah textures. Other games do much better..

Don't buy this game. I liked the previous Deus Ex games but the only good thing about this sequel is that it's as polished as you'd expect from a big game studio like Eidos Montreal. The story is dumb, the AI is dumber, the graphics and animation is dated, the jokes are bad, the gameplay is repetitive and feels linear. Sure there's often three or four ways to get from one room to the next: Rambo style, Find the duct, hack a door lock (involves an incredibly dull and repetitive minigame) or punch through a wall. If you chose one playstyle (like stealth) there's usually only one option though. At certain bottlenecks you have to go all out violent, like the out of place boss fights, or if you want a chance to save your friend. If you made the mistake of focusing on stealth you might have to start over at that point. There's nothing new or innovative about this game and the features they've picked has all been implemented much better before. The story is about how prosthetics are causing worldwide riots and terrorism... come on, prosthetics!? They try really hard to make it seem bad but fail miserably. Humans are already "augmented": glasses, watches, cars, phones; nothing new there. I honestly don't understand how anyone who's actually played this game can give it a high rating unless they either got paid for doing so or are fourteen years old. Expand

I think it's a good game at all. It has a good storyline, good game play, and a good atmosphere. The music is great and world of the game is well designed. But it could have been better in AI, and should have better graphics. The enemy's AI is really dumb, and the graphics especially the textures in the world are sometimes really low quality.

The graphical quality of the game is fantastic, and the design is very pleasing to look at (though some more variety in objects would've been appreciated). The physics involved in the game are a bit screwy, especially when the game determines whether or not you can pick objects up, but that's quite forgivable. Combat is what you'd expect with cover-based shooting. The hacking mini-game is surprisingly intense, and the options to explore in the game are rewarding and interesting. There is an issue with Deus Ex being so serious, however, and that's when they let you do whatever you please. I was getting a bit bored with the quests (throughout the game, I never found the quests interesting - just something I had to do so I could progress to the next area) and decided to massacre the police department. It was fun and intense. It didn't fit my character at all when he got back to the storyline dialogue, however, which broke immersion. Overall, I was often wanting more action in the game, and it was difficult to come after breaking the "timeline" of the story by wiping out every collection of gang-members, police, and civilians I could find. I recall wandering around gunning civilians in the Asian environment, and killing a civilian who was apparently important, dropping something that seemed to have no significance. However, upon picking it up, my character decided to phone a security officer at the company the character works for. The conversation went something like "Do you think a pendent with some insignia on it will come in useful." "Yeah, why?" "Just wondering." Overall, I enjoyed the game, and I think playing it on the hardest difficulty would have been much more preferable (keeping in mind I'm not particularly good at FPS games) -- at medium difficulty, there just wasn't any point wasting time with stealth. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a thrilling and engaging title, but it falls just short of perfect. The story, characters and voice-acting are easily its strongest points. Unfortunately, the game forces the player into a small number of 'boss' encounters which are not conducive to certain play styles. Stealthy players in particular will find themselves having to put aside their silenced munitions in favor of high explosives for a short time. This, combined with several small, but irksome graphical quirks (ie. take-downs on seated NPCs) will occasionally interrupt an otherwise perfect experience of total immersion. However, these minor blemishes won't sway one's opinion of the game in any major way. It's still an absolutely amazing title. Expand

If you spend time reading the back-story stuff such ass e-mails and pocket secretaries, the debate between Pro-Augmentation and Anti-Augmentation beliefs that take place in the game will have you constantly asking yourself where you would stand on this matter in real life. The game does lack in character development however, and even Adam Jensen, the main character, won't hold too much weight in your heart as there just isn't enough development any character to get you to care about them. The timespan is huge enough to allow Eidos to do something set in the same world without being tied down by specific ends to the plot, complete with a separate cast of characters and its own focus.

While the "Human Revolution" might have been an interesting plot to explore, it ultimately falls short in the game. While it is clearly noticeable that the population is uneasy about the technological developments and the dangers of augmentations, only at the end of the game will real riots break out - alongside the path of Adam Jensen.
You feel like an outsider, kept from the actual events that tear the population apart. While being fed information via emails, ebooks, TVs and other sorts of media, the game fails to involve you into its setting.

Upon hearing that James Swallow, one of the better Black Library authors, is involved, I felt the urge to experience this title.
The experience I got was unexpectedly forced and seemed awkward. While a lot of the ebooks provided a good read, the story told in the actual game felt shallow, leading you from one job to the next without even realizing its full potential.
Instead of building up a solid connection to the characters by adding relevant material, you barely get to see them, and what they say is normally so limited, you simply cannot bond with them.

Decisions don't have a real impact on the story either. Whether you choose to help a Quest NPC or not doesn't matter, even if you do, you'll see him once or twice right after the quest, gain your reward and that's that.
Instead of incorporating these NPCs into later parts of the game, helping you out, they get abandoned asap. Characters Jensen seemingly knows from a past we've never even scratched appear and disappear without leaving marks in our lives, only adding a few credits to our pockets.

One thing I regretted was letting my pilot, Faridah Malik die when we got shot down by Belltower soldiers. A short dramatic dialogue sequence via vox and once I passed that area, Jensen got contacted by Pritchard, who was seemingly shocked for seconds but then told Adam to not act out of revenge.
When you later find her body in Triad-boss Tong's lair, there is no reaction, no line of regret, sadness, nothing. Abandoned.
If I had rescued her, she'd have evacuated Megan Reed and her team later on, and disappeared afterwards. No impact.

The end of the actual plot feels artificial, architected and unnatural. Eidos took all of the leading characters and threw them onto Panchea, and left the player with the decision to doom them all.
Tying loose ends was supposed to work differently, especially when you don't even get a proper epilogue. Abandoned characters once again, Deus Ex Machina.

    1. Bosses. Come on, stupid boss-making outsources. I havent heard of you and i hope i never will. Boss One - big guy with machine gun. And its bad idea to get close to him. It looks like... like every bloody first boss in every bloody FPS. Oh HELL, noone told this guys its a stealth action game? Took me 15 minutes and some chill pills.
Boss Two - sneaky girl with machine guns... Borderlands much, **** My hamster is more creative. 10 minuts and no pills, she is just stupid.
Boss Three - thats it. Someone casted mass stupidity on them all. Confined space, grenade volleys and(ta-daaaaa) you cant see **** Why? because your augs are not **** working. Not only that - all your screen goes to hell, literally. Its filled with rubbish, explosions and the guy is INVISIBLE from time to time. That whas the place when i said **** you" and used the trainer to give myself unlimited health. And you know what? 7 minutes of my life wasted while i was trying to actually HIT the guy. 4 mags from fully upgraded assault rifle... I have some chill pills left for those, who try to kill him on consoles. I feel your pain, guys and gals.
Last Boss - you should see that piece of **** yerself. Com **** on. When that stupid b.. almost fried her biochip i thought - GREAT. For once evil girl gets what she deserves and i can just go and finish the game. But some tard said - we need last boss. Fire that dumbass, we dont. We had a game that was satisfactory in all ways, except your stupid bosses. This one is no better - its boring, stupid and you should watch Minority Report less. And not be so obsessed with blindfolded broads all the time. "Its Bull****, and its bad for ya." (c)

    2. Panchea. Total inconsistency. Why all those half-brained maniacs killed everybody.... except each bloody other? To be a challenge for oh-so-mighty Adam? Screw you again. Thats idiocy. Why they get alarmed at you presence? They are totally INSANE. They should behave like totally insane. They behave like regular soldiers. I went thru this crap once and thats it. Next time its cheated energy + invis + no sound augs. TY, i'm not doing this again. Not satisfactory.

The levels looked like something a prison inmate would design (I remember the "fort" being a large square with holes in it). They did a brilliant job bringing Deus Ex to life again. Seriously, compare the two and see for yourself. I have three gripes with the game, 1: The atrocious boss fights. 2: The melee system running on little bars of energy(you can't cloak and then disable the enemy without eating an energy bar lol). 3: the enemy has incredible aim and can even hit you behind cover most of the time. The option of stealth vs. homicidal gameplay allowed me to play the FPS I want to play, and at my own pace. Overall, I highly recommend this game but felt that it almost belonged to the Hitman series of games (albeit, a hitman with insane gadgets), rather than Deus Ex. If there's a Deus Ex 4, it should build on the foundations laid here. Well done, EI & SE. 8.5/10 Expand

My current computer (a 2009 Dell xps 8100, quad-core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM) isn't amazing, but it allows me to play fairly high quality games with relative ease. As a matter of fact, I have never had frame-rate issues on any game, (server and internet connection being obvious exceptions) from fast paced Scout-runs in Team Fortress 2 to slaying hordes Orks in WarHammer 40,000: Space Marine. To be frank, the frame-rate issues I have encountered while playing even the first fifteen minutes of Deus Ex: Human Revolution have been unacceptable by any means, practically rendering the game unplayable (let alone an enjoyable experience). Would I recommend this game to one of my friends? By no means. Perhaps the issues I have suffered are individual, but that still doesn't give me a reason to give this game a good score. When I made the Steam purchase of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Augmented Edition, with the two DLC packages) for $65.00, I also bought The Binding of Isaac for $5. As of now, I have enjoyed The Binding of Isaac much, much more than Deus Ex. I can tell S. Enix put work into the creation of this game, so I give it a 4/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought the game via Steam and played it through to completion. I was very entertained and intrigued by the storyline, and the gameplay was fun and engaging.

The character customization felt impactful. I did not feel that I was dumping my points into meaningless categories. I enjoyed the combat aspects of the game...but I was happier with the idea that I had the OPTION to fight or find an alternate way of handling a scenario.

I didn't feel like the game was holding my hand through the exploration of maps or finding specific objectives. The game does have map waypoints and helpful tools, but there isn't a shiny line guiding me in a certain direction, which is usually because there are multiple ways to get to a given objective. This game is a reminder that it can be fun to figure things out.

I would have liked to have more interaction with the world. There are many buildings, doors, windows, things lying around, etc., that you cannot do anything with. They are simply part of the game's "sift through things to find what you need". If you need it, you can interact with it.

The game felt to be more rewarding if you followed a path that involved sneaking & hacking. Hard charging into an area with guns blazing proves to be effective, and sometimes very fun...but it's over quick. Taking your time, mapping out in your mind what to and where to gohide, and planning a strategy all seem to be what the developers had in mind.

I played on the easiest difficulty (because I want the story, I don't care about how many bullets it takes to kill a bad guy). I don't believe playing on EZ mode detracted anythiing from my experience. The puzzles were still fun. The combat still made me think about my next move.

This game is worth the time, and worth the money. I was happy with how long the game lasted, although I admit that the game would be a significantly shorter experience if I went around killing everyone.

Although I haven't started a second playthrough, I would agree that there is absolutely enough of a game here to give the game a second playthrough. There are many missions with different paths, and I was left many times wondering what would have happened if I went with a different method.

    Suggestions for developers:

Playing "non lethal" really restricts the ability to modify weapons, as there isn't a lot of inventory space to carry much of both my lethal and non lethal weapons around. I love modifyingtinkering with weapons so I'd try to carry them around just in case I came across some weapon mods...because the non lethal options didn't permit many upgrades.

There is an ability to store my gear in a central place...but I did not like how disorganized it was. I didn't want to simply drop items on the ground and come back later. I wanted gun racks, drawers that I could put things in, etc.

This game could have done without the boss battles. In a sense, I felt punished for my play style. In a game where I am given the option to resolve scenarios in so many different ways...I am trapped into a trigger-happy-hope-you-are-good-at-shooters-even-though-this-game-really-isn't-a-shooter type thing. I felt very removed from the experience in these areas, even though the story line was linked to the encounter.

In DX, the developers created a universe so vast and nebulous that the player could affect his or her experience as brutally as he or she chose (I recall killing both Gunther and Anna as early as possible for jollies and being shocked at the reprecussions it ultimately had.) DX:HR makes you think your decisions are important, and then just ... leaves you cold. The player can run through with no regard for life or plot and see the same four endings, the same locations and dialog. No reward system exists. Besides that, the player can go the entire game mercifully instead of lethally and find no acknowledgement AT ALL. I didn't get the Steam achievement after all that sneaky effort, and I never carried a gun except during boss battles. Yes, reality lacks a reward system also. DX:HR is not reality. Is it entertaining? Yes. I am not rating a television show, however. I'm rating the (competent) sequel to possibly the greatest FPS/RPG ever. Entertainment without true depth is something that can be found in many, many games. The art direction, sound design, world construction - these are all brilliant. Many gamers will wet themselves in joy. I imagine this as some crippled Adonis, some sleeping and underrealized beauty. What should have been Dune is instead a Spider Robinson novel - masterful and timeless without being angry, without trying the observer. I deleted my local content after my chosen ending awarded me with its terrifying frustration. Expand

Why ruin a game with bad boss battles. Infuriating! I invested most on my points in stealth and hacking which worked great until I met the first boss. How the hell is this boss battle supposed to fit in with the rest of the game? Am I supposed to replay the game from the beginning and invest all my points in combat? This could have been a great game without it.

The variety of guns is huge - starting from simple pistols and smgs to mini-guns, lazers, plasma guns and rocket launchers. The enemies are smarter than in most games these days and the simplest "guns blazing" approach does not work very well on higher difficulty settings. What is really lacking, though, in Deus Ex: HR is the story. The story felt too weak and there isn't much motivation for what you are doing. IMO, the beginning should have really been in the middle. The characters, however, have pretty fleshed out personalities.

You just should put your headphones on, turn of the lights and live this game. This is no shooter, this is no RPG, this is no horror. This game is just different. I completed ~50% of the game without even killing anyone. Graphics are just fine. Not hi-end technologies, but everything is smooth and shiny.
Music is really great here. One should never turn it off.
Speaking about dialogs... Well, facial animation is way too far from L.A. Noire (okay, every game is), characters' movements are kind of wooden, but you just forget about that, because voices are very emotional (there are few, very few exceptions) and dialogs are written very well, there are almost no usual 'stamps'.
What I really liked about this game is the fact that you can really find many solutions to complete something. Developers were talking about it earlier, but, unlike the other games THERE ARE. You can kill people, you can turn them off, you can find hidden entrance - well, there are really many solutions and approaches to every mission and quest completion.

I guess with the lofty expectations of Deus Ex, anything but amazing gives a bad wrap. Compare it to many fps titles around nowadays and this is, pants down, worth your money, go buy it now.

The story is good, but lacked the twists, turns and suspense of the original. The graphical polish isnt there. In places I really feel the designers and writers wanted more impact from moral decision making. This for me could be seen in the games culmination at the end. The fact you could quick save the game, choose among 4? outcomes, watch the video, hit f8, then choose another in seconds. No finality, which lead to a lack of replayability, for me.

One of my biggest beefs was the atmosphere created through level design. The original included a third major city to explore in paris, this distinct third location really blew your mind back then in emphasising the scale of the story. I found it really immersed me. This had me immersed right up to the return to detroit?, detroit then china was good, but it needed one more distinct city, hub of quests, to explore and make it great. I would have liked a combo of picus studios with a unique city and scrap singapore. The remote ocean-base was great, that was a real winner.

The hacking mini-game was alrite up to the revisit to china, i hacked everything and anything I could. I felt it needed maybe a lock pick (especially conisdering the original with the autokey tool) in a mini-game format, or maybe make hacking vid cameras/turrets/robots a mini-game.

Save this for the end where nobody reads it eh? ok! BIGGEST BEEF = WHY NOT INCORPORATE MORE OF THE ORIGINAL STORY??????!!!!!!!!!!!! My god, why not fit the denton brothers in here somhow? It baffles my mind from a story writers point of view this is such a treasure trove of amazing 'blow your mind' tie ins with the original. And the game has SOOO much scope for these tie ins and they did it almost no justice, thats probably my biggest beef, but no it isnt, the atmosphere is, LOL. I really shldnt complain about story considering the fricking junk that comes out of game makers nowadays, like omg my imported pet giraffe meat could write a better story then that kind of story.

The most important thing for me, is all being said and done, im happy with this being what it is in the series, its a fine addition and im really excited with the DLC content from a story perspective. I hope to see alot of unique locations and story tie ins that I greatly reckon was planned but got cut in trying to push it out the door for consumers.

So we have 2 series of gamesI am a huge fan of the original so Deus Ex Human Revolution had to meet some pretty high expectations to get a good review from me. Deus Ex HR does remain true to the Deus Ex formula and is not another Invisible War farce. The kind of game play here has been seen more recently in the Mass Effect games ironicaly borrowed heavily from the original Deus Ex 1. So we have 2 series of games driving each other forward it seems. Deus Ex 1 introduced us to missions that could be completed more than one way and upgrades that decided which way we did them. Unfortunately the original Deus Ex 1 got a little lost half way through the game and stopped supporting that, becoming a plain old shooter in the end with half hearted steps and the multi choice mission design. Which made the early game the favourite part of the original for most hard core fans. Deus Ex HR does not make that mistake, you have choices all the way through the game and best of all Deus Ex HR does a far better job of it than the original Deus Ex 1 did. So the gameplay is best described as Deus Ex 1 Statue of Liberty level on some very strong drugs. Every single level jn HR blows that original Deus Ex level away on game play terms and in terms of choices.

The tools used to active this are simple, multiple paths to every destination exist, passwords can often be found on computers for security systems. So all you really need to do is decide if you want to be stealthy or gun ho and configure your character accordingly.

Believe me you can take good 70% of the upgrades by the end of the game, so there is lots of room for experimentation here. Perhaps a little too much room actually. The difficulty levels are easy normal and hard though they use different words to describe them. I found Normal gets you killed just enough to make you think about each level. Thus turning HR in to an RPG rather than a shooter. If you play on easy, you find it becomes more of a shooter than an Deus Ex game and if you play on hard, which is called "Give me Deus Ex" difficulty, I fully expect you to be completely reliant on your upgrades to succeed. So the balance is great, though the bosses are more annoying cop outs than a real end of level story update that should have taken place. A sign of a problem that this game has actually. Unfortunately HR lacks a strong story line and its characters are too shallow to care about. You will not care about saving the main quest character the game is about. You will not care which NPCs around you die. This game is more action that story and you jump around from one place to the next so fast that the little details that made the first game special and where important to game in some ways are lost in translation in HR.

HR is a far shallower game than the original Deus Ex as a result. And at about 25 hours long for the main story and side quests on the first play through, it is a short game than Deus Ex 1 too. Going by my £1 per hour rule to gage value for money, if you only play this game once, you will be ripped off by £5 if you buy it at full price. If you can make it to 30 hours it will be good value for money but given all those details I spoke about are missing, I am having a hard time working out where those extra 5 hours will come from. Still if do not care about such things than fine but you should because without a firm expected guide to game length you end up paying £30 for games that struggle to make the 10 hour make like Batman and Bioshock 1.

So HR gets the game play right but fails on the story line and characters, basically it is swings and around about is. It is a good Deus Ex game, it delivers the gameplay we expect in spades and even sets new standards for future Deus Ex games. So it beats the original in some very important areas and falls short in other important areas. Which means its a great sequel because there are clearly ways this game can be improved in the net one and its not going to be hard to achieve next time now the formula is right for the game play again.

PS avoid Deus Ex the invisible war, it is a farce from the start and has little or no relation to any other Deus Ex game.

If you like Mass Effect, Vampire - The Masquerade Bloodlines, knights of the old republic or Deus Ex 1, then you will like Deus Ex HR too. This is a genre has a lot of fans when the formula is right and it is almost right here.

The hacking system was INCREDIBLY well designed, forcing me to think strategically every time I had to get through a door, open a safe, etc. All hacking was also done in real time, meaning that the world around you doesn't go on a lunch break just because you need to get though a door, you will still be shot at. This game did a LOT of things right, and even if you rated this game a 0, you must admit that it had something that every game could learn from. Expand

All this aside, I enjoyed the experience and hope that if the series continues the developers return to their older roots. Expand

However as you progress further and further the story and missions tend to make up for a lot of the easy combat. This game is NOT a perfect 10 and although some of the negative reviews have valid points this game doesn't deserve a negative score either. I think a lot of people got so hyped up at seeing the trailers that they might have been expecting a little too much out of this game..

Games don't really get better than this. Good story, solid voice acting, lots of replay value. Graphics are a bit dated, but the level of detail and thought that has gone into the world and characters surpasses that of most games.

It almost feels as though the game was made for stealth, and stealth only. Firefights are extremely clunky, and once you engage in one, you might as well cross your fingers and hope you saved recently.

I also felt the progression was very linear, for what initially appears to be a sandbox style game. At the 20 hour mark, I simply gave up and sold the game. Being a new parent, my nights are limited to only a couple of hours to myself, so after eating up 2 solid weeks of personal time, I can safely say I got my money's worth. I recommend this to anyone who is a HUGE fan of stealth based games, but if you're looking for action, steer clear.

I climbed through an f-ton of vents and shafts. I ran around invisible a lot. Hell, I didn't even need a real gun except for the out of place boss fights. Interesting, but graphically dated game. It's not open world-e, and the open world-esque parts just make you feel claustrophobic. The voice of Sarif sounds familiar.

    Game play
.. is somehow too easy, even when playing on hardest, as covers = imba, and guards, even after you throw a grenade their way, will assume it's nothing when the 30 seconds hard timer is up, and besides, hardly even bother come search after you when you're noticed even. (Prefer stealth mechanics as in Metro 2033).
The 3rd person cinematic for takedowns and fall implant breaks up the flow and becomes irritating, the cover mode/look however, is cool. The different approaches, so much spoken of, feels like a repetition over and over, with air ducts, hackable door locks or brute force. The ugly*:
Finally, the end credits, it feels like I'm visiting some distant relatives which is having a slideshow of people I care nothing about. To be harsh, it breaks the immersion I had in the game, and becomes everything but a reward for finishing.

    * Just having fun, they are all like super model looking. Lots of implants I'm sure.

The only bad side of the game is the bosses. They shouldn't have added them,or should have let us run away from the fight just like the original Deus Ex.The game just throws you at a "Bull" after you passed countless levels without killing or being detected by anyone and not firing a single lethal bullet.I didn't even unlock the typhoon augmentation,I didn't kill anyone, stealth is the way to play this.

Also, the dialogue with unimportant NPCs can get really hilarious because they didn't work on the behavior of those unimportant NPCs.For example:I bursted into laughter when an old guy(I won't say who he is since that'd be a spoiler I guess) came near me,holding his hands together like a little girl and with the facial expression of ":3",saying "Adam?" with a surprised tone. That was just pure hilarious.

Anyways, the game is great,I didn't like the "movie endings" thing either, they could have at least added an epilogue for each ending, but I guess they want to leave "What actually happened?" question to our imagination.I'm alright with that.Overall, great game.Deserves a 9.5

It has been over 10 years since the original Deus Ex was released and I was expecting more from Human Revolution. The graphics look a bit dated (especially some of the character models) but the game world is generally well designed and immersive. The voice acting is good but is let down by the poor facial and character animations. There are several different ways to complete most objectives which generally keeps things interesting. You are rewarded with more XP for using non-lethal weapons and the game tries to encourage a stealthy approach but if you prefer to go in guns blazing the combat is a little disappointing. The AI is pretty average and the gunplay doesn't feel satisfying. The cover system is a great addition to the stealth side of game - it is smooth and easy to use. However it makes the combat even easier than it already is and you can just take cover and pick off guards one by one as they rather stupidly charge towards you. The augmentation system is a bit of a let down. I was really struggling to spend my praxis points towards the end of the game because some of the possible upgrades just seem a waste of time. There are some cool ones - being able to float from rooftops and stun groups of guards, throw heavy vending machines and smash through walls are great. On the other hand, some of the stealth and hacking options serve no real use and seem thrown in to make up the numbers. I really didn't like the boss fights. I've nothing against them if they are done right but Human Revolution's are just rubbish. Play the game and you'll see what I mean. They mostly involve running, taking a few shots at the boss and repeating. My main gripe about Human Revolution is that my choices in the game don't seem to have any consequence. In the original, if I went in to a mission guns blazing and no mercy it would upset certain characters but impress others. In Human Revolution I can break in to occupied apartments without the owner batting an eyelid. I can gun down the staff of an entire police station or murder all the patrons of a nightclub and as soon as you get outside the building, nobody cares. There are a few instances where not killing someone or helping a character will have a yield a minor reward later on but those choices don't seem to have any impact on the main story - at the very end you are presented with the four different endings regardless of the path you took through the game. Worse still, the possible endings and their implications are spelled out to you (twice) before you push one of four BUTTONS to end the game. I was really hoping that my actions throughout the game would dictate the ending or at least determine the endings I could achieve. No such luck. I got 35 hours of play out of Human Revolution, though I did complete all the side quests I could find and did a lot of exploring. If you just blitz through the story you'd be finished in 15 hours or so. Since you get all four endings on a plate at the end regardless of your approach I wouldn't find a replay very rewarding. Sure the inventory control is sticky (why?) and many NPCs have the shakes (um why?) but it is true to the original - nonlinear play (um, this isn't a sandbox like Oblivion tho) should you cloak and zip passed the cameras, or evade the guards, or walk around the roof and float down if you have the right aug to get to your objective, etc. It is very PC friendly (with one exception below), allowing you to save almost anywhere at any time and good remapping of key ability. It has COMMON SENSE - thank you for not making us RE-FIGHT the last boss to see all the endings. Sheesh I hate that. My only real criticisms are (1) I had trouble mass delete saved games; i.e. i couldn't go into the directory and delete 80 games at once, b/c it would still think they were there - very frustrating and (2) it should let you have more than 100 saves. (4) and finally, I felt like maybe there should be more enemies if you get caught or something. I played non-lethal all the way (so I thought; maybe i screwed up the beginning scene) and sneaked passed everyone or took them out quietly. Having downloaded the game through Steam 12 hours ago (and playing it since), I can confirm that the game has a polished release. The PC version feels like a true PC game and not a port from a console.
The game uses PC resources fairly well in fact; with practically no load times in open-world areas and brief loads times for others. Loading a game save is similarly brief while saving occurs almost instantly. Usually, in parts of the game where you are likely to die, the game will autosave for you in case you fail. A nice addition to the auto-save feature is that the game keeps the previous autosave just in case you want to re-do a game choice (which admit to using several times thus far since some choices did affect game story quite a bit). The visuals are appropriate for PC- with high definition graphics plus appropriate options depending on your PC build and monitor- even though the game will choose the best balance for your system by default. They even had the correct resolution for my 720p HD TV that I use as a PC monitor (1216x684), which is always a hit and miss thing for new games.

One thing that really stood out about this game was the voice acting and character models. NPC city dwellers all differ in appearance with even a majority of enemy NPC's having different hairstyles and facial details. I also like the voice acting overall- for a game that has so much voice acting in general you would expect as such. IMO, the voice acting is well above average and the cinematic sequences are extremely entertaining to watch and add to the story.

A fun gameplay element from the 1st Deus Ex makes a return in this game, which is the illicit snooping of emails and the hacking of computer consoles. Some computers are errantly unlocked, giving immediate access to emails, whereas others require passwords or hacking to glean gossip or useful intel. I found the amount of comms like this were on par with the 1st Deus Ex. A nice touch was the addition newspapers (which are electronic news clips of sorts) that reflect your in-game actions. These small touches add authenticity and help show that your actions have consequences. It also appears that if you kill somebody in game (and there are quite a few friendly and enemy NPC's in general) they absolutely will not come back to life just b/c you leave the area and come back later. In fact, you can kill the side-quest giving NPC's which is a drastic test of realism, but entirely possible if you play that way.

Story and plot-wise the game stands on it's own while still adhering to the timeline of the Deus Ex game since It is apparently a prequel to the Deus Ex series. Having played the first Deus Ex myself I couldn't find any inconsistencies in the game lore. In fact, I did recognize familiar names and even familiar voices from the first Deus Ex that are present in Human Revolution.

In fact, I'd more likely call the process "streamlining." Not to deny the quality of the original, but you must admit it was rather clunky, even for its time (God, that inventory system). For a true bastardization of the series, one must look no further than Invisible War, the second installation.

As for the game itself, it was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in a long time. The voice acting (especially the VA for David Sarif), story, and atmosphere were top notch, and I even had a blast hacking all the doors and computers, which contain troves of information on the game world and its goings-on. The verbal confrontations with some of the major characters are absolutely breathtaking, as well.

On the other hand, there were a few things I didn't care for, however minor:
    1. The character models, while not bad by any means, felt a little lacking, especially for a PC title. The facial animations and hair textures were specifically jarring. Again, for me, a minor flaw.
    2. The hub cities somehow managed to be both confusing and boring in a lot of ways. It took me a while to get used to their multi-level layouts (the only way to get into an apartment complex is through a fire escape? Really, Detroit?), and there was a disappointing lack of sidequests scattered through the streets. The clunky map system didn't help matters, either.
    3. Not to regurgitate a common complaint, but I felt the mandatory and lethal boss fights were unnecessary and jarring considering the freedom of the rest of the game.
    4. One thing I should mention, though it's no longer an issue, is the load times. There were a lot of complaints about the excessively long loading screens, but this seems to have been fixed via patch, at least in the PC version.

Despite its small flaws, this is a fantastic game, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the series or stealth/action games in general. Great voice acting, perfect atmosphere, intriguing story, and fun gameplay make this a release I wouldn't advise missing.

This game could use some better tutorials... It can be amazingly beautiful and stylized at most of the time... but then there are those strange moments were it suddenly becomes very ugly. Character animations are great, while facial animations are not. But this is all just unimportant because the atmosphere in this game is so dense, so immersive that you fall in love... not on first sight, but after 4 to 8 hour you WILL love it. The augmentations are great, the stealth is better than in any recent stealth game... the rpg elements are richer than in Mass Effect 2 but slightly poorer than in The Witcher 2 for example. If you hope for this to be a trulty RPG, do not get your hopes up... there are 2 major city-hubs you can explore... but more than half of the game you will spent on missions.
There are side-quests... BUT they are mostly so connected to the main-story that I would not even call them side missions...
In the end it is NOT a perfect game... it is a fabulous stealth-action game with great rpg elements, a top-notch story, mostly beautiful visuals and sound. I urge everyone to play this game. It is not GOTY in my opinion, but it is a ride worth taken.

I enjoyed the stealth aspect, it didn't focus on it, but gave you the option all the way through to go completely undetected, it was very basic though. Pathfinding was a bit a joke as well really... Can't hack this keypad? Well, there's probably a convenient ventilation shaft you can climb through to access this person's office, or police armoury, or high level governmental official's house, or something... Are security set-ups really that lax? The cover system was pretty similar to Mass Effect 2 but it was a lot less forgiving, you really couldn't take many shots before going down (that's not a necessarily a bad thing though). You had to make sure you got your headshot aimings spot on because the enemies didn't give you a second either way to take aim. Unfortunately that made me go for the nicely overpowered cinematic takedown route. You could literally run at someone, tap Q in reach and watch as the protagonist lays a swift roundhouse or chokehold to the badguy, regardless of their armour, rendering him out for the count - the count being, forever, or until a buddy finds them and cracks out the smelling salts - and after realising the last "energy cell" (used for takedowns) runs out, it recharges, there was no need to use my stun gun or tranquilizer rifle for most of the game. The social aug that allowed you to analyze and and influence personality gave a nice touch to the NPC character interactions at key parts of the game. However It really didn't seem like any of this made a big difference to the outcome of the story (if any at all) it was all just a means to an end. If you couldn't get someone to do something for you, you'd go ninja vent crawling and cinematic take-downing until you did it yourself. Which to be fair, made you feel like a bad-ass anyway!

I've probably focused on the bad aspects too much, the game is far from bad, my memories of Deus Ex have just lead me to want the perfect game from the series! This is definitely a worthwhile addition anyway!

When played as a steal/covert infiltration game it really shines, offering the played numerous rewards from story background via overhead conversations to hidden passages leading to all kinds of amazing places.

Only the mandatory boss fights and rushed feeling towards the very end prevent this from being a perfect 10. More on this later.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution stays almost painfully true to the original Deus Ex formula but does so with a different cast of characters in a setting 30 years prior to the events of the Warren Spector directed critically acclaimed original.

Their are numerous over-whelming similarities to the first game - but, without giving anything away, I'll just point out the very start of the game as an example, the following could apply to DX-1 or DX:HR interchangeably: You are given a choice of weapons before the first mission begins, both lethal and non-lethal. The story takes place in a situation where the officials are being held back while you go after the terrorist leader. If you've played the original you'll notice this is a trend; albeit, a very well executed trend. The only mini-game is for hacking, a ubiquitous skill that can be used for every computer, keypad, alarm, turret, robot and camera in the game (The later three via special security computers). It's simple to master and time doesn't stop when trying to hack a device so it presents a rare situation where the mini-game interfaces with the rest of the game dynamics as being spotted hacking is usually a bad thing.

Graphics are very good, with amazing detail, and I mean unique detail in almost every location. There were several downright breathtaking vistas and events.

If only the bosses didn't suck. These bosses miss the mark both as story characters and strategic fights. Two of the bosses I didn't even know the real names of until after the fight, and not because I'd skipped a cinematic, they are never properly introduced or integrated. Amazingly they chose to deviate from the original DX and added these as unavoidable bosses that can either be absurdly difficult or stupidly easy depending on tactics with little in-between. One boss in particular takes several hundred rounds to the head to kill... or a single well timed punch. Finally, the end has a feeling of rushed development and missing content. Several jarring issues towards the very end including missing quest markers, clearly missing/cut areas and even an in-game reference to cut budget (referring to non-working escalators) point to places that could have and should have had more meat at the end. But this is a little like complaining that there was too little icing on the dessert of the perfect meal.

Come take a seat by the fire, light a pipe and have a dram with me. That's the way I felt as I let my suspension of disbelief take hold and allowed myself to become fully immersed in the world of Adam Jensen. I decided early on to play in a specific style of stealth and pacifism which the experience system virtually pushes you towards right from the beginning. I was pleased to see that they dropped the easy, medium, and hard mode selection in lieu of a "Story", "Challenge", and "Deus Ex" option. It's like looking in the fridge and seeing a bottle of rotgut whiskey and chocolate milk...we all choose chocolate milk occasionally and that's fine. I think this is a great way to allow casual players to enter into the game without feeling like they are cheesing out by selecting easy. I chose Deus Ex mode because I enjoy the extra fear from knowing you are two shots away from death at any time. Truth be told this is not a hard game even on Deus Ex, but it is an extremely rewarding one if you are willing to put the time into it which it deserves. A lot of people have commented on the lack of depth from the first Deus Ex, and I would have to agree. There's just not as much continuity and interconnected plot lines. Not only that, the play style and experience system is very silly. You get far more experience by finding every code for every door/computer (from the exploration rewards, not the actual codes in most cases), yet still hacking the consoles. In fact, this game toes the line of monotony so much so that without the great cast of characters and gripping plot, I would give the game mechanics a meh score at best. If you strip away all the story, the game would essentially be: enter area, look around area, sneak to security hub, hack security, disable guards, explore entire area and hack everything, rinse, repeat. Again, you don't have to play this way, but with that much experience just waiting for you to collect it, how can you ignore it? I can tell you now that I would play much differently in hindsight because at the end I was literally just putting points into skills which I would never really use. To be honest, you only need about one third of the skills, and about half of them are nice to have and the rest are just one time useful/gimmicky skills. So you don't have to scratch every surface and turn every rock over, and don't be afraid that you will be underpowered at the end. There are a few skills, in fact, that completely nullify major enemy game mechanics, essentially turning you into a demigod. Sort of silly that a character build can have that much effect. Combat or lack there of is very well done. Sneaking and disabling your opponents is very fulfilling on many levels. I successfully completed the game without killing any non-essential people, and I have to say that I felt like a good fellow inside. In comparison games like Space Marine which, albeit true to the mythology of the story, pride themselves on violence as a religion, Deus Ex allows you to feel connected to the well-being of the people who inhabit the world. Strangely enough, I found that not killing people is actually rewarding. Who'd have thunk? To return to the actual game mechanics, weapons are well thought out, and once you upgrade certain items to your specifications and combine them with the proper skill trees, you will find that you can handle almost every situation with precision and relative ease. I can't count how many times Deus Ex presents the user with situations where there are dozens of potential ways of completing a mission, all of which are completely viable. In certain places, I feel that Deus Ex is almost a combat sandbox. Do you want your sandbox to be filled with blood and bullet casings or left as untouched as possible? Heck do what I did, save all the time and experiment. That's really where I found the most joy in playing. I was able to answer all of the "what if I did this?" questions. To start where I began, for many of us geezers, playing Deus Ex is like bringing an old friend back in your life. Depending on how you play, you can turn this game in to a bit of a grindfest, but that is completely unnecessary. It's a wonderful story, a harrowing one even as it's not completely out of the realm of possibilities. It certainly will make me think twice about ordering that first augmentation... Expand

My choices meant everything, the experience was my own. Everything from the paths I took to get to my destinations to who I let live and who I killed, Deus Ex gave me control, and gave me the unprecedented power of choice. I have yet to complete my first playthrough, and when people tell me about decisions to make later in the game, I feel like the game has been, in part, spoiled for me. I love this game because it is mine, I own this game. Not just because of the money I spent, but because my choices, my story, my character, and my adventure, were all mine, all my doing. From my grand successes to my most frustrating failures, it was all about MY input. And that is what makes this game special, THAT is what makes this game art. This game is not just a journey through the life of Adam Jensen, this game is a journey through yourself, what morals you uphold and which qualities you take for granted. This game is art, and should be respected as such. The stars of Human Revolution is, of course, the augmentations. Upgrading your character is a journey all on its own; after you've earned the Praxis points necessary to purchase the invisibility augmentation, or the ability to see and punch through walls, you feel not only more like a badass, but that your hard in-game labor has finally rewarded you. Augmentations differ drastically, from granting you more power cells to giving you the ability to wipe out a roomful of baddies with the push of a button. Every aug you purchase reflects your style of gameplay, from stealth enhancements to thicker skin to more resourceful hacking abilities. Without some augs, some areas will become impossible to access, while others become ripe to be explored. Whatever augs you choose, that decision is finalized, and will always, always, impact you later in the game. Of course, such an amazing game, with all of its moral quandaries, personal storylines, customization options, and great gameplay, is not without its shortcomings. The most noticeable flaw is in the graphics; while the game is beautiful 90% of the time, facial animations suffer during conversations with NPCs, and occasionally textures appear to be less detailed than they should. Overall though, the graphics are very clear and vivid. Another flaw would be the boss fights, which completely do away with all the of the options to choose how to deal with an engagement in the game. You just hide until they unload their clips, then go at them with all you've got. You WILL die, several times, during these boss fights.Without the right augs, these are a pain to complete. Luckily, there are only four of these in the game. All in all, the game is incredible. It's got qualities that appeal to the shooter crowd, with its snappy controls and great weaponry. It also has the depth of a top-of-the-line RPG, as a Deus Ex game should. A must-buy. Expand
