I'm glad this remake was made since i had not played the original, and while it didnt exactly set my world on fire, i did have a decent amount of fun playing it. The graphics look up to date, but at its core Destroy All Humans still feels like a game from mid-00's, which is both its strength and weakness. Crypto and Pox easily are stars of the show and their banter is just hilarious. Modern games industry could use a resurgence of simple, unpretentious fun little AA games like this that are there to entertain, not to win awards at circle jerk game awards shows.

One word: fun! A main quest that is very entertaining (the writting it's not great, obviously, but who cares!), good graphics, and several USA fictional locations with a 50s B Movies atmosphere that works very well and that you can revisit at any time looking for collectibles and side content.

    The definition of an 8/10.

Boss battles also kinda suck (very grindy) hmm and overall the game is SUPER easy. I liked it for the first 5 hours, but after that I started to lose my patience with the overall game. Comedy can be very hit-and-miss also.

Undeniably weird, and consisting of a pretty fair variety of tasks from mind control, to some stealth, to all-out blowing stuff up and more I was also pleasantly surprised with how it remained pretty fresh throughout for the most part… though perhaps its pacing and reliance on connective cut-scenes that each need to load feels pretty dated as well. In terms of looks and performance I’d say it’s pretty consistent with many refreshed updates from previous generations, with everything having a certain unrefined look and some performance quirks at times that typically run a bit more pronounced when playing in handheld mode. All in all I can understand why people enjoyed Destroy All Humans in its original outing, and putting myself into the time when it was released I can even see how it would have fared well among its brethren, if nothing else by just being an atypical animal in the herd. If you’re feeling nostalgic and would like to recapture some of that fun it will likely deliver the goods, but if you don’t have that connection it’s up in the air for a recommendation… and would really depend on whether your love for games that feel off-center and different with abundant humor is more important than more compelling and consistent action and excitement.

This game can be defined “good” only if you are a nostalgic fan of the og version.

The concept is still fresh today, but the gameplay is too old. The tutorial is endless, the commands are sloppy, the in game dialogues should be funny but they are simply annoyingly stupid. The loading times are exaggerated: they are fast overall but a remake CAN’T have a loading every time I have to

The raving 5-star reviews for this game must mean people are blinded by nostalgia or are able to extract enjoyment from this game that I was not.

The graphics are the most obviously remade aspect of DAH. Crypto and the saucer look great, especially during cut-scenes. Obviously they aren't what the PS4 is fully capable of, but the graphics make for a smoother experience but also are quite superficial under critical examination. For example, all of the levels are claustrophobic sandboxes, which can cause you to fail a mission if you stray outside of. This is most noticeable when you are in the saucer and can see things from higher up, which tends to be a less pretty perspective. I think they cut corners at times here.

The story is where DAH probably shines best for the majority of the game. Crypto is full of sass and kickass attitudes, the extra-terrestrial version of Dirty Harry. While he doesn't develop much in terms of character, this makes sense but also adds to the repetition of the game as a whole. Early in the game I really enjoyed taking control of the mayor to give a political speech, wherein I had humorous dialogue options. DAH would have benefitted from more innovations like this to balance out the tedious gameplay.

The gameplay itself is where DAH crumbles gradually. The first half of the game, and I'm being generous here, is quite enjoyable. Learning the controls and navigation is fresh; you have a growing arsenal, a spaceship and the option of stealth. However stealth often becomes mandatory and not an option. This leads to very restrictive gameplay and very sensitive failure parameters, such as being discovered or an ally getting killed on the dreaded escort mission which modern games have mostly forced into extinction, and for a very good reason. The stealth mechanics don't lend themselves well to the game, as I find people witnessing me take on a disguise despite not being in my line of sight.

The arsenal you do get is fun at first, however the ammo for these guns is ridiculously limited and bizarrely difficult or irritating to replenish. I found that upgrading my base gun made short work of most of the game, but this one-dimensional approach only further stunted my enjoyment.

The straw that broke the camels back for me came in the final boss fight. Having two successive boss fights with three health bars each, unbalanced attacks and hordes of enemies and projectiles all leads to an artificial and outdated form of challenge that ultimately is a time-waster.

Essentially the game got worse for me as it progressed, which is antithetical to how a game should work.

Overall, I was keen to play this as I had missed out on the original, but this makes me glad I did and also glad I waited for a sale on this version. They could have taken the premise of the game and just rebooted it from scratch. Instead what we have is a Ratchet and Clank knock-off, which is disturbing as the original came out three years before DAH on the PS2. If you have fond memories of this game, you should probably just leave them as memories.

Playing as Crypto; an alien who sounds like Jack Nicholson; players go around the Earth bringing mayhem wherever they go.

In 2020 the original game has been remastered and I first saw some of the game at E3 2019 and loved my hands-on time with the game.

With enhanced graphics the game takes on a new life as players are immersed in a nostalgic 50s setting which captures the best elements of pulp science fiction and Alien Invasion films.

Crypto has all sorts of abilities at his disposal such as being able to mimic humans thanks to his Holobob as well as enable humans to protect and follow him. He can also read their minds and if needed harvest their brains for much needed D.N.A.

With a title like “Destroy” in the title Crypto has a range of weapons at his ability which can fry, burn, and blast the countless enemies he will encounter. Since the game has a Cold War setting the Military, Government agents, and civilians are often fast to talk about “Commies” and espouse All American Values. The game also has some very adult humor that is delivered in a subtle way ranging from thoughts that Crypto reads to parked cars not so subtly bouncing in the local Lovers Lane.

Missions are a mixture of stealth and action as Crypto often has to find something, destroy something, escort something, complete tasks, and survive waves of enemies which naturally get harder as the game unfold s.

The sounds in the game are fun and the arsenal of weapons that Crypoto and his ship are able to deploy offers lots of variety as does his special abilities which give players options for how they play a mission.

I really enjoyed the game as the mix of humor and action was a winning formula but I did bog down on the final mission. I found my ship was not up to the task and using a Jet Pack to fly around was not going to cut it.

I was able to return to the Mothership to do side missions to harvest D.N.A. or do challenges which in turn allowed me to upgrade the weapons and abilities of my ship which made the final battle easier for me to complete.

Being able to upgrade weapons and abilities is a big part of the game as being able to grasp and throw and object at enemies is great fun as is making a brain “pop” from someone who has annoyed you.

I really enjoyed the upgraded version of the game and hope this leads to either a new game in the series or remasters of the prior games as it would be fantastic to see this series continue.

Althought nostalgias is priceless, a game can´t live and thrive just on it. So as a fan of destroy all humans for more than 15 years, I´ll tell you what are its biggest flaws and its greatests achievements.

    Achievements:
    - Graphical improvements
    - better quality of life options (as checkpoints in missions )
    - better mechanics (like pk (Psychokinesiss) and wepaons)
    -new weapon upgrades
    -better sound effects

    Flaws:
    - They should have implemented secondary misssion like in Destroy all humans 2, because a 2005 is kinda short. (I´ve finisshed all mission, all upgrades and all the challenges with 3 stars within 10 hours) and lacks re-playability.
-Mods! where are the goddam Pc mods!, if you´ve brought this game to pc , you should at lesat give the community a devkit for mods, or open a steam workshop page. This is because, this point tackles the firt flaw, mods give a game hours and hours of replayability. Look for example the elder scrolls saga, its newest title is from 2011 and it is still one of the most played games on steam in part due to the mods.
    - No pk in holobob, personally I´ve always liked more the holobod than the body snacth inmm the other games (they should implement it in futher remasters), but c´mon I mean one of the most amusing aspects of the game was trolling the humans while in disguise. It´s part a important part of the genre and I hope they brouhght it back.
    - No multiplayer, and I don´t mean a massive pvp, but just, at least, a local multiplayer like the one that was integrated in destroy all humans 2 and was watered down in DAH the path of the furon

    Final thoughts:
It´s a great game and a must buy if youa fan of the saga. I´m hoping they fix those little details that make the game great. I cant wait for the remake of destroy all humasn 2.

Destroy All Humans! was rebuilt from scratch, but when it comes to the gameplay experience, it is identical to the 15-year-old original game. As a result, the story campaign feels outdated and gets stale after some time even despite the large arsenal of skills and weapons. It still is a fun game though and thanks to new visuals exploring the remade maps is a pleasure. [10/2020, p.52]
