Shadowkeep delivers on our expectations, giving us more of the things about Destiny we like, while reminding us that nostalgia ain't what it used to be. [Issue#139, p.106]

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is a lot of old content covered by a coat of paint that can barely be considered new, but thanks to the general update of a few game systems and a decent amount of recreational therapy with which you can increase your Light Level, this expansion definitely makes Destiny 2 a better, bigger game.

Destiny 2 has never been this accessible, and the foundations Bungie has laid for the future are largely solid. The core "new" content of the expansion may be a bust, but Bungie has proven that by going independent to better pursue their own creative vision they could make Destiny 2 a far better experience for everyone. Destiny 2: Shadowkeep stumbles over itself in spots, but the faults are not enough to put a damper on what is an impressive update to game as a whole.

Shadowkeep is an extremely lazy expansion that offers nothing more than the bare minimum of content. Some new sets of armor, a few additional weapons, several exotic and a pleasant additional endgame activity are of little use when everything else is in fact recycled from the past incarnations of the franchise. Let’s hope Bungie will somehow counterbalance the scarcity of present contents in the next season.

PvP still needs work, and the story is once again more style than substance. However, abundant content elsewhere - including new PvE challenges and a build system with actual depth - means Shadowkeep does what it needs to.

If Forsaken breathed new life into Destiny 2 which had been flagging during its first year, then Shadowkeep feels like a step down from that. [I’m currently at 915 power level]

Shadowkeep feels a bit thin at the moment I think, but that’s because Bungie no longer treats expansions like one-and-done releases. Sure, there’s a new campaign, but really Shadowkeep is just the appetizer for another year of Destiny 2.

Bungie has finally created a formula that makes Destiny 2 both deeper and more satisfying, with a release schedule that makes it easier to plan your sessions and to know when new content is about to drop. I’m not just excited about playing all that Shadowkeep has to offer, but also to see what’s happening next, and that’s a huge improvement from where the game was even a year ago.
  4. It’s weird to say it, but Shadowkeep’s problem is that a lot of the problems and hard questions that Destiny 2’s first year threw up have been solved since the Forsaken expansion a year ago. Shadowkeep hasn’t had to fix anything, only attend the age-old challenge of keeping players on the Destiny treadmill. As a result, everything feels awfully familiar, from the big events right down to the quest types, which are still largely about earning currency to buy a quest that wins you a roll on a new item of gear.

I’m worried Shadowkeep will bring lots of players back (and plenty of new ones playing the free-to-play version), only for the next expansion to lose them again.

Ok, I'll try and avoid major spoilers, but to be honest the plot is so thin here it may well prove impossible.

    Shadowkeep is the inevitable

Shadowkeep is the inevitable outcome of destiny players begging for the return of nostalgic content from the first game. This expansion is (if you're a long term destiny player like myself) almost entirely derrived from content you've already paid for. The campaign consists of a handfull of missions where you traverse locations on the moon you already visited in the first game, every single boss is a reskinned "nightmare" version of bosses we've already fought, this includes the final boss, almost all of the non-story related loot I recieved was Forsaken loot or older. The campaign is plot bare, incredibly short, answers no real questions and has you doing sidequest tier "kill X enemies with Y gun" style sidequest content for armour pieces for a good half of it's duration.

When Bungie said we were going back to the moon, I expected some reuse of maps, what I didn't expect was almost the entire expansion (that we've unlocked so far) to be recycled content. It's completely unacceptable for bungie to resell us content we've already paid for.

Amazing, first story unbelievable. They’ve clearly worked so hard making it and yeah it’s brilliant
