Hearing bullets wiz past your head as you hear the crackle of machine gun fire in the background is something that I have yet to experience in any game.
-
Day of Defeat is not only a great looking game, but an enjoyable WWII multiplayer experience that gives you more than your money’s worth.
-
Every bit the great game its predecessor was, and then some.
-
AceGamezJust as enjoyable and as addictive as it has been in previous versions, and hopefully in time, new updates and maps should bring in a new generation of Day of Defeat fanatics.
-
I think the new DoD has done the best job of utilizing the Source physics engine.
-
Pelit (Finland)Looks very professional. It is hard to believe that it is just a mod. The action might be too fast for the weak hearted so keep your pills close by. [Nov 2005]
-
This is a brave, slow-paced WWII shooter with tons of character and verve. Valve will update it with more content, and when they do DoD will be worth another 5%. Until then... [PC Gamer UK]
-
While the game still needs some patching, and is unfortunately not DoD as we know it, this is still an absolutely fantastic package; those after a new multiplayer shooter can’t really go wrong with this one. Oh, and expect this score to go up over time as Valve patches out various problems.
-
I expect to be playing DoD a lot more than "Couterstrike: Source"... I recommend DoD:S to the multiplayer action crowd, but don't come crying to me when things start getting stale.
-
While a lack of maps cuts into the game's value somewhat, Day of Defeat: Source still offers a satisfying and exciting experience for those who just can't get enough of World War II.
-
PC FormatIt's firmly a team game, rocketing from tense action to a tedious slog, based entirely on how the rest of your team plays. [Dec 2005 p.91]
-
Sound is what makes this game unique however. You’re made very aware of gunshots almost everywhere to varying degrees of loudness.
-
BoomtownValve's insistence on quality over quantity has paid off – this is a small but perfectly polished package.
-
In terms of scale, it barely comes up to Battlefield's ankles, and in terms of tactics and tension it can't beat Counter-Strike, but once you've spent a few hours on a server of 20 or so people, you'd have to want not to enjoy it to fail to - and your own war stories are an inevitable byproduct.
-
A great game if you are a fan of the WW2 genre and a previous fan of the DOD series, but if not, you might find greater value in another WW2 title.
-
When all's said and done, this is an old game - an excellent old game and a beautiful old game - but an old game nonetheless. But if you haven't played it before, now's a great time to do so. [PC Zone]
-
PC GamerGreat fun, but tough to recommend until more maps are available. [Holiday 2005, p.72]
-
I just figured that with all the time it took to release DoD:S that they might be adding vehicles (a la "Call of Duty - United Offensive") or weapons. It turned out that I was wrong. Doesn’t make it a bad game, and the $20 bargain price (which is almost certain to include more maps from Valve at a later date) doesn’t hurt, but if given the choice (and Steam doesn’t) to just keep playing the old DoD, that's probably where I would have stayed.
-
Yes, yes, no doubt Valve will release more maps soon and the community is already churning new content out, but are we expected to pay for an updated mod that was free which offers less content than the original but that’s supposed to be ok because the community will fix it? Huh? That’s logic I can't wrap my head around.
-
Love it or hate it, DOD's war is an apparently contradictory compulsion.
-
At $20 a la carte or bundled for cheap with other Valve products, anyone who enjoys this kind of game should easily get his money's worth.
-
Taken with the limitations of only four maps, on which to play one game type, all too soon you can find yourself in a mechanical rut playing them over and over. And that's something that the original didn't suffer from.
