I have decided to buy remaster after long time and play through DS1 again and well...my rose tinted glasses were crushed, this game is bad. Its not about remaster, its about the whole souls series. I dont know if I am getting older or maybe after playing many games I have higher expectations from games, but the game mechanics and design is just plain bad. I love walking through souls worlds, they are beautiful and atmospheric, art style is awesome, sound is great. I love collecting here, leveling and the feel of exploring dangerous world. World is so thought out, interconnected, bonfires distances are okay. Story was always meh in souls series, but exposition in souls series is fun concept, through exploration you find the history of world. But now lets get to what made me just not play any souls game anymore. Game mechanics are just bad, I dont know how I was able to tolerate the you must die mechanics so long, you dont feel like your time is worth investing into these games. Enemies are cheap, there are very few enemies that are actually challenge. Almost every enemy has some kind of almost 1 hit KO and sometimes the mechanics bug out so you actually die in 1 hit.But almost every enemy may be shield up circle strafe backstabbed. There are always extremes nothing between either you completely cheese the enemies or they obliterate you with their secret move they use once in a while. The irony is that you never run out of estus flasks, due to this, its rare for boss fight to end with 0 estus flasks and low hp.They are annoying nothing else, every fight is pray for not bugging out on weird hitboxes, iframes etc. Its just no fun at all because enemies have more advantages than the player. Hell they can hit through walls... Next biggest enemy in this game is camera, oh how I forgot that you have to permafight with the camera. Combat is mediocore, well in past I liked its simplicity that you rely on weapon moveset but what I never liked was the slowness and weirdness of movement, combat and dodging. Its just so slow and illogical, it goes against the player, the only skill is that you have to go against your reflexes to please the game....dodging makes no sense as you have to dodge like 1s after you would dodge using your reflexes. This applies to all souls games.
Traps were worst in DS2 until you didnt knew what trap was there, you died. Even here, you know where the traps are, but even with knowing where the traps are, they are just bad, they just make you annoyed and angry nothing else, exploration excitement is completely killed, because all you are thinking about is great, what will kill me now because souls series are known about dying, so you have to die. And the bosses.... Some are good, look I like ornstein and smough, but even still sometimes game just completely goes out of its way to just kill you to show that you must die. One hit ko attacks, weird hitboxes, clunky attacks, telegraphing and the animations to confuse your reflexes. The combat and enviroments in this game are not built around challenge, but around you dying. Is this fun? I just dont have the patience to ignore the bad in order to enjoy the good. Souls community always sucked because this series was always about elitism nothing else. Maybe I am older and I want to enjoy the game and not prove to myself that I am good. But with this mindset, you cant enjoy the game, as it is made to annoy you, not challenge you. I like challenges but not artificial ones and souls series is all about artificial challenge. All bosses can be cheesed, but even with cheese you may die to some random attack that may one shot you. Or maybe the game just hooks you up as stockholm syndrome victim. But I just dont see the appeal of playing souls series, its just festival of lameness to make you mad. Look I recommend playing the game once and be done with it, never to return to it. The visuals and world is breathtaking if you have the patience to endure this lamefest, you dont need skill, only perseverance and patience. Believe me I completed all aforementioned souls games as pure melee faith build as I always thought that crusader like character fits the narrative, I even didnt used lightning bolts or ranged miracles as I was elitist prick as wanted to finish it pure melee back in the days. Try it once and then forget. I loved souls series, but now I think its extremely overrated as I returned to it after many years. Not a fan of souls series anymore, its just huge times ink with minimum reward.

Probably the biggest waste of potential ever to be found in a modern game which was playtested by a 3 year old and its gameplay decisions were taken by a commitee of clowns

    The good:
-Build variety and rpg elements are very well implemented
-The timing in combat is very good and fair (remark "THE TIMING)"
-Very good, immersive and innovative level design, moreso for the time it was released
-I actually like the mechanic of having to clear the whole area before the boss once you died, it makes the game more punishing without ruining the gameplay experience

    The bad:
-One of the worst physic engines ever to be seen in the history of gaming, it makes the game a pain to play with how much what you see is different from what's happening with the hitboxes, to the point where it's plain unfair with bosses like Centipede Demon or Gaping Dragon
-Incredibly outdated and poorly optimized UI, accompanied with some terrible controls
-Ineffective and plain terrible balance, I truly can't understand how trivially easy and simple some bosses are and how infernally unfair some others are (The Gargoyles, also known as: GET GANKED WITH NO COUNTERPLAY, THE BOSS)
-One of the most horrible boss rosters to be witnessed by mankind, the bosses are riddled with problems and terrible design choices that make them disgustingly bad, ranging from the cancerous rng ridden Bed of Chaos and Gwyn (with whom you have to rely on the AI randomly choosing to hit you with the slow attack instead of the fast attack, which is unparryable due to its speed, 8 times in a row after having knocked him to the ground), to bosses which rely on the game's most appaling weakness (PHYSICS) like the Gaping Dragon, Centipede Demon or Seath (boss that actually becomes trivial when you stand on the right spot because you literally become invulnerable to its spikes) to "GET GANKED NERD" territory with nefarious **** like the Four Kings and the Gargoyles (which, don't get me wrong, double bosses are not a bad thing, Ornstein and Smough are actually the only good and well thought-out boss in the game, since they did a good implementation of a 1v2 combat which is at the same time fair and very difficult). Truly 99% of Dark Souls' bosses are appaling, except the aforementioned Ornstein and Smough which is the only good boss, and the Iron Golem, which is fair but its difficulty wasn't implemented to its fullest, making it a trivially easy boss.

Probably the worst sin of this game is being shamelessly blind to its own weaknesses, gameplay choices were made as if the physics motor was actually top-tier, when in reality what you end up with is Queelag dealing you the same damage with its explosion if you're at melee range or at the last pixel of its radius, or the Gaping Dragon doing 3x damage to you when walking with its shamelessly inaccurate hitbox (with my friends we actually call him the shoe box because that) than when he stomps you with his ten thousand teeth.
Dark Souls has the potential to be a good game, but it's a laughably, vomitingly bad product with a few promising glimpses of glory.

Such a disappointment to see that only few things were changed.
Besides the key biding being decent for a pc game, nothing actually changed besides a few textures that look like the original game with 3 or 4 mods.
So much room for potential went missing, such as fixing the backstab in PvP, weapon balancement, some enemies placement...the list goes on. This is a lazy cash grab that

The first Souls Saga game is incredible, but its remastering is somewhat poorly done and does not deliver a good graphic for its launch year "2018", the same game with nothing changed, only a more polished world, could be better .

Dark Souls punishes you for not knowing things you have no way of knowing yet. Punishment is performed by excessively wasting your time.

Dark Souls punishes you for not knowing things you have no way of knowing yet. Punishment is performed by excessively wasting your time.

Things that you have no way of knowing yet but will punish you come in many variants:
    - walking in the wrong direction (wrong-level areas, missing a checkpoint (which are sometimes hidden))
    - traps and ambushes along the way
    - spending exp/souls on bad stats or weapons
    - basic rules of combat (invincibility frames, parrying, invasions, armour usefulness, enemy turn speed, some hitboxes)
    - behaviour of never before encountered enemies
    - enemy weaknesses
    - strategies that feel like they shouldn't be this effective in the first place
    - which enemies to better run past

You'll get punished for not knowing this by either:
    - having to redo the last couple of minutes (this you will spend most of your time on)
    - wasting hours being in an area you have no business being in
    - having a weak character for the rest of the game
    - getting angry for having no way of having knowledge in advance how to circumvent the punishment
    - wondering if the designers of the game are actually trying to make your life worse
    - doubting if trying again is worth your time in the first place

To fill the knowledge gaps needed to succeed you either use trial and error or one of the numerous guides which make most parts of the game easy and which most players seem to use. A big portion of the fun of exploration is destroyed by using guides but there is no fun in unfairly getting punished either so you have to pick your poison. In retrospect I regret not using a guide more willingly because it seems like a requirement to have insider knowledge about some aspects of the game (i.e. finding a certain door). If you look stuff up though then you miss out on probably the best part of the game which is the atmosphere of maneuvering through an unknown, grand and hostile world.

Indeed the game world doesn't want the player to succeed which is surprisingly an interesting concept. It enforces a narrative of the player progressing against all odds by beating monstrous bosses and enduring senseless hardships by strength of will. This is funnily enough the beauty of Dark Souls.
You will encounter a lot of reviews praising its difficulty from players who were captivated by this narrative and somehow didn't mind all those hours wasted by getting unfairly punished. But if you don't need a self-esteem boost or get one by enduring hardships and value your time then I can not recommend this game to you.
Don't let your judgement be clouded by people telling you, you are bad for quitting. They might just be justifying having endured the punishments themselves. Most will quit this game and most will do so for good reasons.

Dark Souls: Remastered can almost barely be considered a remastered title for PC gamers and, while it provides some increase in graphics and quality of life improvements, these additions are largely negligible unless you’re a dedicated multiplayer fan. Despite this fact, Dark Souls is still an amazing game that is worth playing through more than once, and there’s a lot here for gamers who’ve never played through the first title in the Souls series.
