If the Mega Man games and old Mickey Mouse cartoons had a child it would be Cuphead. Awesome challenging gameplay and the lovely artstyle makes this game one of the best jump'n'shoot games of all time.

Yet when playing cuphead i constantly keep going back in and come out with victory. With its beautiful art style and it clever boss design, it is a remarkable game that I not only impresses but fascinates. After every death, i jump right back in learning from it and each knockout is a satisfying feeling that never gets old. The idea of having a simple difficulty for the bosses is a nice addition, although you dont get a contract, the player is still is rewarded with advancing to new areas around the isle, which can lead to finding new run n' gun levels which can get you more coins and you get more flexibility to upgrade your player and then come back to finish the job. Speaking of upgrading your character, the powerups you can buy are nicely balanced and having the ability to switch is especially nice for the multiple stages the bosses can have. The run n' gun levels are also spectacular as they are a good break from the brutal boss fights. These levels are a great way to get coins and are never too difficult. Overall cuphead was a blast to play as it was able to always to bring me back in with it stunning art direction and its spectacular soundtrack (which i listen to constantly). Considering that it is only $20 it is a game that you cannot pass up. (If you do buy the game, you may want to change your controls or get a controller as the controls on pc are very strange) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i cant allow myself to say something bad about this game in fact this is hard to find a problem in cup-head with perfect mission design.
animations are perfect the graphic is really really good and game play is simple but nice
the worst thing is the balance between player and boss but its not going to be a problem because after losing several times (maybe 30 times!!!)you can feel the balance
    sound effects,musics,voices are brilliant
and story is simple but really attractive and engaging

I fell in love with the art style the first time it was shown, and waited in anticipation for game play, and when I finally saw game play I was even more intrigued. You can't use it as practice because it removes attack patterns.
You can't use it as an easy mode because it doesn't allow progression.

Outside of that, the game is fairly straight forward that plays more like a mix of megaman and contra only far less forgiving.

It was not long before the news came that this game is very difficult, with this in mind and after seeing some videos of the people suffering, I called my brother to help me on this journey, we started to play and really the game was very difficult, but someday my brother told me that he read somewhere that the game was even harder when playing 2, the lives of bosses and other enemies doubled, which would be fair since it has 2 guys shooting at the same time without stopping, well ... more or less fair, the truth is that about half of the game I started a new version alone and the game is extremely more easy to play, some enemies die with 1 simple shot, and the same enemies that die so were not dying with 2 shots when we were playing 2 ... how to understand this math? For me the game sins in this question where playing with a friend should facilitate things rather than hinder them, except that some areas were totally designated for 1 player, where 2 players can mess up a lot to each other, well we still end this game playing together.

Apart from this detail, the game is very cool, it has several interesting power ups that help a lot, and although it is a game with an above average difficulty, it is not a game so revolting and impossible to pass, if you learn a lot as you try , the stages last for a maximum of 3 minutes and after they pass they do not have to worry anymore, there is no Game Over that forces you to start all over again like in Battletoads & Double Dragon for example.
The game was a well deserved sales success, and now I'm looking forward to a sequel, I hope they put more stages to pass, because in this are very few, most are just bosses, I believe the series has a great future ahead .

While some say the game is too hard I say its changing, like meat boy every death felt like your fault. I give this game a 9/10 for lack of online multiplayer.

    parecido a

I never in my life played 2D scroller games so I expected it to be very difficult.

It was, but the fact that I couldn't just run headlessly through the game was great. I got to enjoy the process and satisfaction of learning the mechanics of each boss and that is how the game is supposed to be played.

If I can finish the game, so can anybody else.

So upsetting to see all these people with no patience whatsoever whining about the difficulty and basing their low rating just for that.

Even so, there is a "simple" mode which makes the game way easier so it makes it even worse looking at these reviews.

This game deserves to be my very first actual game review, it is phenomenal.

+ Great graphics, which everyone already knows
+ Very smooth controls, everything works perfectly
+ I didn't come across any bugs or glitches
    + The soundtrack is incredible
+ Difficult but satisfying learning curve, and on simple mode anyone can finish it

Couldn't recommend it enough, get it!

You can see the sweat, tears and love that went into every frame of every drawing, of every single entity in this game. It's sparkling with personality, and there is tons of variety throughout the game to keep you occupied. It's challenging, sure, but even if you're not particularly fond of hard games you can easily overlook it because of the visuals alone. Buy this game!!

Now this is a very good game, where do I start, the graphics are superb and beautifully animated.
The game play mechanics are perfect, yet the best thing this game has are the bosses, every boss is unique in its own, the difficulty is tuned for casual gamers and for die-hard gamers.

Moving on, this is very likely the most overrated game I've ever played. None of the bosses feel memorable, and this is an immense issue considering that 90% of the gameplay is boss fights. For me, it never feels like anything more than a bullet hell with different visuals and slightly different jazz playing in the background. It's largely trial and error with some (sometimes offensively bad) rng mixed in. Let's make an analogy to my favourite game of all time - Hollow Knight. HK has this exact issue with the final boss of the pantheons, who in fear of spoilers, will remain unnamed. Now imagine that boss, but it's the entire game. A grindy demi-bullet hell that rides solely off of visuals and music. The difference being, the HK boss is considered one of the weaker ones in the game, and Cuphead is somehow one of the most popular games of 2017.
Given this, It must sound like I straight-up detest the game. Not that anything I say matters very much, I'm sure innumerate people will dislike this review the instant they see the yellow. So what did I like about this game?
Well the controls were sufficient, the arbitrary artistic enjoyment was there, and the game was decently entertaining.
    And that's about it.

I love platformers, and they are maybe my favorite genre next to puzzle games, but I haaaaate the bosses. I have played entire games only to not finish them because I didn’t want to finish the final boss.

This game is amazing! Every boss demands new thinking, new strategy, new management of weapons and abilities, and a new test of patience and wishing to whatever gods you worship for a lucky run. Including resets because of an early fatal flaw, I probably attempted to defeat the dragon over 200 times. I changed weapons, bought new upgrades, and changed strategies numerous times. Yet I never rage-quitted. I just wanted back at another chance again and again.

Why if I hate bosses, and I love platformers, would I love a game that is only a platformer in order to play bosses? Because the bosses in this game are so varied and complex that they each present a new puzzle of strategy and gameplay to defeat, that to call them traditional bosses is an insult to the design. Maybe that and the fact you know that that is entirely what you are signing up for? But absolutely everything else is executed with such love and detail that you are enticed to experience more of the game. The graphics are gorgeous and unique. The soundtrack (so perfect) and sound effects are amazing, and I wish I had purchased the version with the soundtrack. The game may have been in a mini version of development hell for a long time, but you can tell it is only because the developers wanted it to be pristine. That it is.

Only the run and gun levels seem a bit out of place. But even they are still fun challenges, and just as challenging indeed. This game gets a 10/10 from me, a player who hates bosses yet can't wait to finish every boss in this game (I'm almost there). If this game even remotely seems like something you would enjoy, just buy it.

Pretty much every boss fight in this game is extra hard af except 2-3 bosses of the 1st world.
So basically you spent hours in remembering boss patterns and even then there is always RNG factor in ANY boss battle that'll f*ck you up and you end up raging while being close to win.
If you gonna buy this game prepare yourself for b/s last phases on every boss.
It'll be really sad if they don't patch this.

This game, artistically, is phenomenal with the hand drawn animation and AMAZING backgrounds. The music will also shine and I had several songs stuck in my head. Gameplay - it's EXTREMELY hard, but not unfair. People will call it bad out of pure rage. I wish it was longer, but it deserves its high praise. This is DEFINITELY a must buy from 2017.

Cuphead is a punishingly hard 2D platformer/shmup styled after cartoons from the early 1930s. Lovingly hand-drawn, this game is extremely stylish; the whole thing recalls cartoons of the 1930s, from the audio to the visuals to the fonts to the characters in the game. Lovingly hand-drawn, this game is extremely stylish; the whole thing recalls cartoons of the 1930s, from the audio to the visuals to the fonts to the characters in the game. Every bit of this game is bursting with 1930s style; unlike “retro” video games, this is genuinely a game intended to look as if it was made in the 1930s.

At its core, Cuphead is a boss rush game. Most of the levels in the game take the form of some sort of multi-stage boss, which transforms itself into new forms as you fight your way through. There are no hit point indicators in this during the course of a match; you simply have to beat on the boss until it transforms into its next stage, with your hits only registering as brief flashes on the boss to indicate that your attack had indeed scored.

This gives the game a rather intimidating aesthetic, as the bosses are not easy; the game starts off with a couple of fairly simple bosses, but rapidly ramps up to much more difficult fare. By the end of the first world, you’ll be fighting bosses harder than what you see in most 2D platformer games; by the end of the second world, things are even harder.

But you will persevere; the game, while very difficult, also is designed to help you predict the enemy movements, which, while somewhat randomized, are telegraphed (albeit without much time to react in some cases) and can all be dodged. Every level can be beaten without taking a hit – and you’d better get good at dodging, as you only have three hit points.

The bosses operate on 1930s cartoon logic as well, and often involve both pun names and visual puns. The enemies change their attack patterns and often undergo physical transformations – often wild ones – as you fight your way through them. Unlike modern children’s cartoons, at times these could be fairly dark, and the bosses become increasingly intimidating in many cases as the game goes on, while simultaneously often maintaining their comedic air and recalling ideas from the early 20th century like mysticism, hypnotism, and old school circuses and amusement parks.

The game’s core gameplay is pretty simple – you can move around, angle the cursor to shoot at angles (including downwards), crouch and shoot, do an aerial dash, and “parry” pink objects, which absorbs them, bounces your character upwards, and charges your super meter. There are five stages to the super meter, and you have both a basic “super” attack which deals some extra damage and goes through enemies, and a more powerful one that consumes all five super meter stages and gives you a devastating super attack that can chew off about half of a boss stage’s hit points, makes you invincible, or boosts your attack power.

In addition to the boss stages, there are a relatively small number (about 2 per world) of levels that consist of running through a stage beating a series of enemies in a more standard side-scrolling type game. These levels themselves can be fairly challenging (though they’re generally breathers compared to the bosses) and they help mix up the gameplay by incorporating more standard 2D platformer elements.

Between the stages, you walk around in a “world map” type thing, where you can interact with a small number of NPCs, who will sometimes challenge you to do things and reward you with a coin, or going to the shop, where you can spend coins to buy new options for your characters. Some are new attack options – such as tracking shots that deal less damage, or the ability to charge up shots like Megaman at the cost of not being able to hold down the button to fire continuously – while others enhance your character in other ways, such as making you invincible during a dash, giving you an extra hit point at the cost of dealing less damage, or automatically parrying when you jump.

This game is fun, but not in the same way that something like Portal 2 is fun. Rather, this is a game which is fun because of its challenge and because the aesthetic pairs nicely with the gameplay. You are going to die if you play Cuphead. You are, in fact, going to die many hundreds of times before you get to the end and win your soul back from the Devil (gambling is bad, kids!). If you don’t like hard games – if you don’t like failing many times while learning the bosses patterns, so that you can finally succeed – you won’t like this game.

But if you like the idea of working hard to overcome a series of difficult mechanical challenges, this game is likely right up your alley. And while the game is very hard, it is ultimately fair in its difficulty. The charm of the game helps to make the challenge feel less miserable, and the fact that there is a constant goal hovering ahead of you, pulling you forward, makes it feel like you are, in fact, making progress, no matter how many times you fail.

The art is hand-drawn and inspired by 1920's era cartoons, something I found to be a breath of fresh air with a unique quality that I've never experienced in a game before. The animations are a joy to watch with many new animations few each boss, I must have died 50 times overall trying to watch wildly varied boss transformations and attacks instead of dodging the projectiles. Nothing feels recycled at all.

Each boss has a highly personalized level aesthetic with 1920's inspired jazz that accompanies it perfectly. It was incredibly exciting to see each new level and see how the boss's aesthetic would fit into the scope of the landscape. The boss's that occupy each level are absolutely a joy to encounter, even if they're kicking your ass because of the level of attention of their animations, the level design, and the matching aesthetics of the music and bosses.

The game-play is incredibly tight. I can't recall an instance where I was hit due to poor controls or a bad hit box. When I was killed, which I died a lot, I felt that in 99% of cases it was due to a poor choice by me, with the other 1% being due to a boss using two abilities back to back that made it impossible to dodge. Even though I died a lot, it never frustrated me. The pacing of the boss battles makes each death feel like a learning experience rather than time lost. The boss battles average 2 minutes or so, with many deaths occurring in the first few phases as I tried to learn the patterns of the attacks and how to approach them better.

Cuphead is a highly engaging game that requires patience, thought, and skill to beat. It has pushed me to be a much better gamer because it pushed me to do things I didn't think I was possible of doing. The art style initially captured my attention, but gorgeous visuals can't carry a game. Cuphead is the complete package in terms of art, sound, and game-play. Thanks Studio MDHR for this experience. Thanks for not giving up on your dreams of making such an ambitious game.

The artistic design is what makes this game so special. Everything in the game is vintage, from the characters to the graphics; and we'll never get tired of it. However, what also stands out is the difficulty of this title, which is high and challenging.
All the bosses are really worked out and each of them have its own personality and a different ways to defeat them. We'll feel like we're facing a brand new challenge every time we face a new one, so the game is far away from being repetitive.
What is a bit disappointing are the run' gun levels, which are very little. It's a pity because they had a great potential and were really fun. I'd have definitivelywanted many more. Most of the abilities you can exchange for coins in the game shop are not useful at all. In addition, the only ones that really worth it are available almost from the beginning.
Cuphead is an indie game with the quality of a AAA. Which is something that has a lot of value taking into account the budget these usually have. So I'd widely recommend this game for every platforming lover who wants something different from what we're used to see.

This game has a great soundtrack, a nice classic cartoony feel to the game, and doesn't have a steep learning curve. It tests your reaction time and your ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations, because no two bosses are the same, and each boss has several stages to them.

This game is not impossibly hard like the other games these days that try to copy the Dark Souls formula, but it is definitely not a walk in the park. Prepare to get frustrated, and take breaks when you do.

Overall, this game is not intended for the faint of heart. If you have poor reaction time, maybe you should watch others play it instead. I'm only in my 20s writing this review, and I feel like I can't keep track of everything that's going on. It is very overwhelming. I actually gave up and quit halfway because I got tired of having to try so hard. But I still enjoyed the game a lot before I did.

If you're not the kind of person who likes bruteforcing hard bosses over and over for hours, you might want to consider passing on this game.

The gameplay itself is something like Metal Slug style where it can also be played from 2 simultaneously.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cuphead is a very hard well made development for 3 (Or More Than 3) Years.
    Story:
Story is about cuphead and mugman getting to casino even althought uncle warned to not get in. Having a win strike devil appeared, offering if they would win they will take all money, however if they lose devil will take the souls. Mugman knew that it was too risky to do that but Cuphead cared about money. They lost and forced to take the souls. However they would want to do anything to him to keep their souls. Devil gave them a job to get every souls that has been assigned for 1 day. This is where all began.
    Gameplay:
The gameplay is simple, there are at least 2 run a gun level at 3 world. All other levels are bosses. The character have 3 health (4 or 5 incase of upgradment) if they run out of health they die. If all of them dies (Or Solo Player Dies) its start from begging. The default controlls aren't very good. I do prefer use controller since its easier to master at steering. The game is about learning the mistakes. Its a hard game because it wants you to learn about mistakes. Lets just say that you died on phase 3 on Goopy Le Grande because you didn't knew attacks. And now you know what he does on phase 3 and its easier to beat. However there are bugs like locked game after dying (The game continiues without enabling to pause and forcing to press alt+f4), the bosses freezing after doing something (Making boss very easier). There are found on twitch livestreams on speedrun or normal ones. Music is amazing they were done very well.
    Graphics:
Graphics is well made with animation with 60 Frames. It takes art direction from '20 Disney Cartoons. Drawing, color, effect are amazing. Its like playing a very harded working game for 8 year.
    Results:
Cuphead is a amazing game. Might be GOTY but of course there will be other games that somehow will dominate this game. However because of Glitches the game might get 10/10. However 9 score from glitches is fair. Well done Studio MDHR!

Great gameplay, visuals, and sense of accomplishment upon beating a boss. It's great to see a game like this in a time when so many games would rather adhere to a boring cookie-cutter and appeal to the lowest common denominator. Cuphead gets a pinkies-up from me.

But I can’t even begin to tell you the art style! Not only does it make the game much more recognizable and iconic. It has a nostalgic feel to it even if you didn’t grow up with Cartoons of this style, at least in my point of view. Overall, the art style makes this game something to remember.

Cuphead is an amazing platformer with it’s own blend, a blend that feels outside of the territories of Super Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog, I give this a 10/10!

Totally a fair and rewarding game. Very short but worth a try if you like a challenge and are a perfectionist. Amazing art style paired with fairly tight controls as far as gamepads go makes for a really fun experience. 10/10 really don't see anyway it could have been better(besides being longer) and there was only 1 boss with frustrating RNG.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

It's just no that kind of game. Overall, gameplay wise, cuphead feels very original and intriguing

    -Premises-
Cuphead has one of if not the most original setting and premises I have ever come to know. The plot (Cuphead and his brother mugman lost a deal with the devil at his casino and must retrieve the contracts from his debtors to save themselves) also feels generally original. I mean we just don't get this vintage 30s cartoon idea to often. Its just nice to have a game so original and intriguing

    -Beautiful Art-
With handrawn art in the form of 30s cartoons, you know your in for the ride of your life. Everything about cuphead is amazing. The 2d art style is beautiful. While the characters themselves are drawn in such buety its no compare to the watercolor backgrounds. These backgrounds are so mystifying and beautiful its scary.

    -Amazing Soundtrack-
Cuphead provides us with a legendary soundtrack. First, for the games boss battles and run and guns we have hardcore true jazz. The main menu provides us with a sort of accepella feel, as it is sung. Other themes sung include Mr. King Dice's theme. Finally, cuphead is split into worlds. Its also worth noting that each world in cuphead has its own buetifully performed theme.

    Well Priced
Cupheads an indie game. You pay for what you get. It's not overly expense, and includes really what the game is worth for the completion time and gameplay.

    -Cons-

    *Note*
While Cuphead is kind of lacking in many cons it's only fair to list the few that exist.

    -Glitches-
While the new Patch may have fixed most glitches, some still remain such as a softlock (Yes I know the patch fixed one of the soft locks but either way some glitch still exists)

    -VERY difficult-
I'm not being a stickler, but it's worth noting that Cuphead is very difficult. This isn't exactly a con, it's a con in some ways but also a pro in the way that cuphead is still fun to play and rewarding because of its pros

    -Sort of Short-
Considering it takes a bazillion tries for me to beat one boss, cuphead doesn't pass to quickly for me, but for some (more talented) players, it takes a shorter amount of time. Either way I think three worlds and a final boss fight is well within the acceptable range of material.
I really, overall, didn't have many problems with cup head

The story is just like the old 1930's style of stories. There is nothing bad about it that I can say other than that it's very hard. Which is not a complaint in my opinion because it's not frustrating. It is very fun and the music is fantastic. The things that really shine are the boss battles, but the run n gun levels are good too. There's so much creativity thrown around everywhere in this game. I would've said its glitched, but they fixed almost all of the problems I have on the glitches in the new patch. The controls are very easy to play with. i don't really understand why anyone would hate this game. It's a solid 10/10 from me. Expand

You know how a joke can start funny, get annoying, then become funny again through sheer attrition? That’s Cuphead’s approach to enjoyment. With a beautiful, caustic, near-unceasing stream of boss battles, Studio MDHR’s debut made me scream with joy and horror by turn, but I settled on joy by the end.

The most obvious point to begin with is that Cuphead looks astonishing. Its 1930s animation style – all watercolour backgrounds and surreal, juddering, hand-drawn characters – pay peerless homage to Max Fleischer and his ilk, and are perfectly implemented. Somehow it manages to balance dozens of moving elements and a slight rear-projection blur without ever feeling unreadable in even the most frantic moments. There has never been a game that looks like this and there may never be again. Every scene is a masterwork – it’s a near-unbelievable achievement for an art style.

The sound work is an ideal match: a huge jumble of high-tempo ragtime, swing, big band, and jazz (the list of musicians is almost as long as the rest of the credits combined) pummels away wonderfully in the background of every fight. It makes Cuphead feel truly out of time, and its bizarre mix of ‘30s aesthetics and ‘80s design more heady than ever. I also feel duty-bound to point out that the way Porkrind the shopkeeper bellows “welcome” made me laugh every single time I heard it.
There’s no doubt that it’s gorgeous, and many people will be drawn to that, but that veneer conceals a very niche, hardcore design. You may have gleaned by now that this game is really, really hard. It’s absolutely uncompromising in its difficulty from the outset. No level includes checkpoints and, barring one late-game match-up, there is no way to regain lost health. You could hit levels that take hours to beat, and the finale is locked off until you beat every other level on “Regular” difficulty (i.e. extremely difficult). And don’t think that local co-op will ease things up – dropping in a second player as Cuphead’s pal Mugman makes events onscreen that much harder to follow. I find it actively harder with a second player, if anything.

And so, as I played I gradually stopped noticing a lot of the glorious art, because actually interacting with Cuphead is so hectic, so stressful, that it just gets filed away by my right-brain as a distraction. That skyscraper-tall robot firing laser barriers is just three hovering hitboxes and a series of no-go zones. When one boxing glove-wearing frog eats another to turn itself into an evil slot machine, that’s nothing more than a phase change. My favourite boss design – a giant bird wearing cuckoo clock armour and its tiny, ray gun-wielding chick – fires wads of garbage at you by literally turning its head into a bin, but I only noticed that detail when I watched someone else play it hours later.

Perhaps Cuphead’s smartest, most devilish addition is in how all these types of levels taunt you into playing more. No enemy has a health bar, nor an indication for when you’re getting close to a knockout – instead, when you die you’re shown a graph of how close you were to the KO or the next phase of the battle. It reduces screen clutter while also encouraging (or perhaps that should be “berating”) you into taking another crack at it.

Cuphead is as tough as it is beautiful, Cuphead won't be to everyone's tastes, but there's absolutely no doubting its quality.

Going for a 1920s cartoon style makes Cuphead stand out from any game today and very pleasent to look at, the music is also inspired from that time period making everything blend, and it is so good which is required since every boss has his own music, I never got tired of any of them, even dyng a lot on expert.
The only thing to mention is, the game is very difficult. This is one of those games, like Dark Souls, you will die a lot, recognise patterns and try again, every time getting closer and closer to beating the stage. I did not find this game to be too difficult, there are 3 difficulty settings Simple(Medium), Regular(Hard) and Expert(Frustratingly hard), although to advance in the game it is required to beat the stages in Regular.
I recommend playing with a friend, since both of you will die a lot this will make Cuphead a very funny experience.

It has a well, unique, and developed story, the characters are really likable, and it not being able to reference alcohol and drugs is a well risk, the game is rather better the way it's now, and this game is good on its own, it was made to be that, so complaining for a sequel, not going to happen
