Incredible artstyle and relatively great gameplay.
We can all agree the painstakingly hand drawn artstyle is great, but the gameplay is rather your regular 2D sidescrolling shoot'em up in a boss rush style fashion,it's not easy nor is it that hard, practice makes perfect. The years long wait because of delays was worth it after all.

Not much to say about this title. I felt in love within short period. The art work is fantastic and the difficulty of the game reminds me of some good old arcade games.
Studio MDHR did a neat job with Cuphead and it is sold for a reasonable price

The music is great and the responsiveness and controls are spot on - although it is a controller game. Playing with the keyboard works, but suboptimal. I am fairly sure that any serious buyer will have a controller though.

For me, it is one of "those" games - i enjoy watching my friend playing.... but i do not enjoy joining in or playing myself.

Cuphead is amazing, but it's not for everybody.

First, it's hard to ignore the 1930's cartoon charm, and the developers really hit the nail on the head with this one. It's not just the spot-on graphics and animations--it's the audio too. Cuphead is amazing, but it's not for everybody.

First, it's hard to ignore the 1930's cartoon charm, and the developers really hit the nail on the head with this one. It's not just the spot-on graphics and animations--it's the audio too. It really brings you into that 1930's cartoon feel.

Another notable part of Cuphead is its difficulty. Like many old-school games, you will likely have to play each level many times before you beat it. You play it once, learn most of the boss' attacks, and are better equipped for your next attempt. And once you do succeed, since it is quite difficult, it is a real accomplishment.
Luckily, Cuphead has a few features that make it more engaging than frustrating. First, each level is maybe one to two minutes long, so if you fail, it's not a lot of time lost. And second, each level has a "simple" mode, where the boss is less complicated, so you can learn how to fight the boss without being overwhelmed. And finally, you have some choice as to what level you want to do, so if you're struggling against a particular boss, you can always do something else and come back later.
That said, Cuphead is difficult, and difficult games are not for everyone. There are probably going to be times when you fail against a boss 20 times in a row, like I did. But, if you're like me, you'll take a break and try again.

There are unlockable upgrades to augment your gameplay to your liking, and, for the completionist, a few cosmetic unlockables and achievements require you to go through some extremely challenging gameplay.

And finally, Cuphead can be played in local co-op, which ended up being a really nice addition.

It took me almost 10 hours to complete, and I felt that it was all a good experience, save a few moments of frustration. Cuphead is very well designed generally, and there were only a few instances where I thought it was difficult in a way that was unfair. Since those instances were rare, it was frustrating in the moment, but easy to chalk up to bad luck and try the level again.

In total, Cuphead drew me in with its unique graphics style, won me over with its tight, memorization-based gameplay, and kept me coming back with varied bosses, unlockables and achievements, and the promise of a well-earned victory.

I get frustrated and quit, but want to keep trying because every death brings me closer to the solution. One strategy I employ is dying on purpose to better understand the enemies attacks. My only negative criticism is that the game play is not ground breaking. With that said, it's not trying to create a new type of game. It's an homage to 2D platformers. So if it feels like Mega Man or Contra, then it's accomplished it's goal. The PC version runs flawlessly from the start. I haven't experienced any noticeable graphical differences between playing it on my laptop and playing on a 1080p TV. In conclusion, the gameplay definitely gets my heart pumping and adrenaline flowing, but it's the character design and visual style that sets this game apart. I do believe Cuphead lives up to the hype. Bravo. Expand

And I have to say, after my first several hours with the game, it has lived up to everything I had hoped for it and more. The attention to detail with the visuals, the beautiful and boisterous soundtrack, the fluid, responsive controls, all combine into the incredible game that Cuphead is. And then comes in the difficulty. I personally enjoy a good challenge in a video game and Cuphead provides that in spades. It finds itself in the perfect position of being tough enough to force you to throw yourself against the metaphorical wall quite a few times but is certainly in no way unfair. The punishment for failure is also nothing too, well, punishing, just throwing you back to the beginning of either the level or boss fight, depending on what you're attempting. And the endpiece showing you how far you made it into the level and how many stages were left is definitely a plus. The different upgrades you can purchase also sit on the nice balance of providing you both some sort of advantage and disadvantage so that you can either feel comfortable just running exactly with what you start with in-game or choosing what upgrades might suit your playstyle better.

Overall, the game is incredible. I can highly recommend it and would definitely recommend bundling in the soundtrack because it is straight up fantastic. Everyone who can should pick up this game because it really is worth the wait and money.

If the game's too hard, either cinch up your big boy pants and tough it out, or get out of Dodge. I see 30-somethings complaining about the difficulty because they don't have the time to be God-wizards at shmups like they were in the days of the NES. Well guess what, I'm also 30, I was never a wizard of any kind at old shmups, and I'm at World 3 after less than 2 hours of play -- on Normal difficulty! Most stages even come with an Easy mode to appease exactly these people, yet even that is apparently insufficient. Invest in alternate weapons and figure out where best to use them, is all the advice I really have. You're not limited to stock rapidfire.

That out of the way, the game does a phenomenal job of selling the 30's aesthetic. The animation is a bit jittery in places where it's just a short loop, but otherwise amazingly well done. The visual filters are spot-on, the backgrounds sometimes make nice use of 3D that somehow doesn't seem out of place, and the sound design is impeccable. From the subtle clickety-clack of your basic weapon to the over-the-top foley work for various boss attacks and the masterful swing-centric soundtrack, it really takes me back to a point in history that I wasn't even alive for. Controls are solid which is of course of paramount importance, and as implied above, the difficulty will definitely keep you on your toes. It's not Dark Souls hard, hell it's not even NES hard (NES hard would force you to restart the entire game every 5th time you died), but it IS a good, manageable kind of hard -- as long as you're not a games journalist with 18 years of experience.

    I very much recommend it.

The graphics are obviously beautiful, but from what I've seen, there's a lot of game-breaking glitches (most of which aren't found in a casual play, hopefully) going about and the game has only been out for a while. Also, bullet hell games aren't really my thing as I'm not a big fan of a cluttered screen, but that's just my opinion.

Sure, it's not a greater achievement if you were able to beat it on an easier difficulty, but maybe include some kind of trophy screen where you can see the different game modes you've completed? Because, easy Cuphead isn't hard Cuphead. It's not the same achievement.

Highly recommend for anyone who miss punishing 80s/early 90s run n guns like Contra and Megaman. The 1930s animation style is also amazing to look at with surreal boss designs very similar to Silly Symphony.

The controls are very arcadey with 8 directional shooting, single jump, descending platforms and a special attack, but it also adds parrying and dash, which were way less common back then. Parrying is not the same as most games as you can only parry certain pink bullets or enemies done by bouncing off it while in midair (working as a double jump). It does not shoot the projectile back at the boss, but instead gives you one full card for your your super meter, letting you use a special attack for the specified weapon you have equipped or a super attack if you hold 5 cards. Weaons in the game also feel situational enough for that I would switch them around for specific bosses, there's no weapon more overpowered than the other. A lot consider spread shot OP, but due to its low range it's useless against certain bosses or boss phases where you're forced to stay at range from the boss. You can also have two weapons equipped and switch between instantly when you want.

Every boss has multiple phases, and are only 1-3 minutes long, but due to everything you gotta dodge all the time without much breaks just one minute can feel waaaaay longer. This is something I felt for Furi as well (another amazing challenging boss rush game I recommend). The boss phase transformations are very surreal and they can go from being a couple battletoads turning into a slot machine or a bird stuck in a bird house to a featherless bird carried in a stretcher spitting up its heart that attacks you. You can choose between fighting them in simple or regular mode. Simple mode gives you linear patterns, while regular they will be random, so you have to be more careful with what the boss will do next. You can only get a contract by playing on regular mode (required to advance the game), but simple mode is okay for practicing the patterns. The difficulty of the bosses curves really well too. It starts out a little rough, but gets really challenging at the second island, and even more so at the third island. Then the finale after that is a true Satan's work.

There are also shoot em up bosses with the same parrying, but instead of dashing it let's you shrink to move faster and dodge projectiles since your hitbox is smaller as well. But it also reduces your range and damage to balance it out.

Platforming sections, which were added later in development and got the game delayed are actually pretty good too. They really feel like old arcade platformers. Most platformer levels also have a miniboss at the end, so they're still not bossless (even a Mega Man 2 reference in one of them). The intensity of them are on the same scale as the boss fights, you won't be running around without enemies coming at you from multiple directions. Only thing I thought could be done better is hiding the coins, they're a little too easy to obtain, so most of the challenge is just finishing the stage itself with a good rating. You generally won't have to replay the level just to try and find coins you couldn't.

But on the topic of coins, you can find hidden things in the overworld. Some characters will reward you with a coin for doing things for them and there are a few hidden paths granting you a coin or a shortcut to later levels. It's a really nice touch I wasn't even expecting from this type of game.

The replayability is also great for with expert mode being unlocked after beating the game and trying to get S rank for every boss. There is also a pacifist rank for platform stages where you have to beat the stage without killing anything, which can be tricky since most stages have midbosses or walls that you need to find ways to skip.

I had been waiting for this game for years, and it honestly went beyond my expections. It's definitely one of my favourite games after just 10 hours and hope you all buy it, it's a very rare gem you won't see much of in modern gaming.

Gameplay: Cuphead is all about practice, method and patience, play it if you like challenges (although it is still far from impossible). The creators labeled it as a "Run 'n Gun" with emphasis on bosses, so you will be in various "big fights" most of the time. Controller response is nice, never failed to me.

With its beautiful art style and it clever boss design, it is a remarkable game that I not only impresses but fascinates. After every death, i jump right back in learning from it and each knockout is a satisfying feeling that never gets old. The idea of having a simple difficulty for the bosses is a nice addition, although you dont get a contract, the player is still is rewarded with advancing to new areas around the isle, which can lead to finding new run n' gun levels which can get you more coins and you get more flexibility to upgrade your player and then come back to finish the job. Speaking of upgrading your character, the powerups you can buy are nicely balanced and having the ability to switch is especially nice for the multiple stages the bosses can have. The run n' gun levels are also spectacular as they are a good break from the brutal boss fights. These levels are a great way to get coins and are never too difficult. Overall cuphead was a blast to play as it was able to always to bring me back in with it stunning art direction and its spectacular soundtrack (which i listen to constantly). Considering that it is only $20 it is a game that you cannot pass up. (If you do buy the game, you may want to change your controls or get a controller as the controls on pc are very strange) Expand

The gameplay itself is something like Metal Slug style where it can also be played from 2 simultaneously.
It was not long before the news came that this game is very difficult, with this in mind and after seeing some videos of the people suffering, I called my brother to help me on this journey, we started to play and really the game was very difficult, but someday my brother told me that he read somewhere that the game was even harder when playing 2, the lives of bosses and other enemies doubled, which would be fair since it has 2 guys shooting at the same time without stopping, well ... more or less fair, the truth is that about half of the game I started a new version alone and the game is extremely more easy to play, some enemies die with 1 simple shot, and the same enemies that die so were not dying with 2 shots when we were playing 2 ... how to understand this math? For me the game sins in this question where playing with a friend should facilitate things rather than hinder them, except that some areas were totally designated for 1 player, where 2 players can mess up a lot to each other, well we still end this game playing together.

Apart from this detail, the game is very cool, it has several interesting power ups that help a lot, and although it is a game with an above average difficulty, it is not a game so revolting and impossible to pass, if you learn a lot as you try , the stages last for a maximum of 3 minutes and after they pass they do not have to worry anymore, there is no Game Over that forces you to start all over again like in Battletoads & Double Dragon for example.
The game was a well deserved sales success, and now I'm looking forward to a sequel, I hope they put more stages to pass, because in this are very few, most are just bosses, I believe the series has a great future ahead .

    Musica - OST
Gran banda sonora evocando la época de los años 30 Jazz en un videojuego es algo memorable

I never in my life played 2D scroller games so I expected it to be very difficult.

It was, but the fact that I couldn't just run headlessly through the game was great. I got to enjoy the process and satisfaction of learning the mechanics of each boss and that is how the game is supposed to be played.

If I can finish the game, so can anybody else.

So upsetting to see all these people with no patience whatsoever whining about the difficulty and basing their low rating just for that.

Even so, there is a "simple" mode which makes the game way easier so it makes it even worse looking at these reviews.

This game deserves to be my very first actual game review, it is phenomenal.

I should hate this game. It should be something I refunded after 20 minutes. I hate super difficult games. I refund many games in under an hour because of their difficulty. I love platformers, and they are maybe my favorite genre next to puzzle games, but I haaaaate the bosses. I have played entire games only to not finish them because I didn’t want to finish the final boss.

This game is amazing! Every boss demands new thinking, new strategy, new management of weapons and abilities, and a new test of patience and wishing to whatever gods you worship for a lucky run. Including resets because of an early fatal flaw, I probably attempted to defeat the dragon over 200 times. I changed weapons, bought new upgrades, and changed strategies numerous times. Yet I never rage-quitted. I just wanted back at another chance again and again.

Why if I hate bosses, and I love platformers, would I love a game that is only a platformer in order to play bosses? Because the bosses in this game are so varied and complex that they each present a new puzzle of strategy and gameplay to defeat, that to call them traditional bosses is an insult to the design. Maybe that and the fact you know that that is entirely what you are signing up for? But absolutely everything else is executed with such love and detail that you are enticed to experience more of the game. The graphics are gorgeous and unique. The soundtrack (so perfect) and sound effects are amazing, and I wish I had purchased the version with the soundtrack. The game may have been in a mini version of development hell for a long time, but you can tell it is only because the developers wanted it to be pristine. That it is.

Only the run and gun levels seem a bit out of place. But even they are still fun challenges, and just as challenging indeed. This game gets a 10/10 from me, a player who hates bosses yet can't wait to finish every boss in this game (I'm almost there). I’m being pedantic, but my only complaint (aside from the few bugs) concerns the design of some of the “platform centric” levels – at some parts, it felt as though I was playing an old Mario ROM hack where enemy spam was used as difficulty filler (it was never this bad, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it could’ve been done in a way that didn’t utilize as many enemies as it did). Other than that, the game was absolutely superb! I'd give it a 9.5 but I'll round up. Expand

So basically you spent hours in remembering boss patterns and even then there is always RNG factor in ANY boss battle that'll f*ck you up and you end up raging while being close to win.

Gameplay - it's EXTREMELY hard, but not unfair. People will call it bad out of pure rage. I wish it was longer, but it deserves its high praise. This is DEFINITELY a must buy from 2017.

Cuphead is a punishingly hard 2D platformer/shmup styled after cartoons from the early 1930s. Lovingly hand-drawn, this game is extremely stylish; the whole thing recalls cartoons of the 1930s, from the audio to the visuals to the fonts to the characters in the game. Every bit of this game is bursting with 1930s style; unlike “retro” video games, this is genuinely a game intended to look as if it was made in the 1930s.

At its core, Cuphead is a boss rush game. Most of the levels in the game take the form of some sort of multi-stage boss, which transforms itself into new forms as you fight your way through. There are no hit point indicators in this during the course of a match; you simply have to beat on the boss until it transforms into its next stage, with your hits only registering as brief flashes on the boss to indicate that your attack had indeed scored.

This gives the game a rather intimidating aesthetic, as the bosses are not easy; the game starts off with a couple of fairly simple bosses, but rapidly ramps up to much more difficult fare. By the end of the first world, you’ll be fighting bosses harder than what you see in most 2D platformer games; by the end of the second world, things are even harder.

But you will persevere; the game, while very difficult, also is designed to help you predict the enemy movements, which, while somewhat randomized, are telegraphed (albeit without much time to react in some cases) and can all be dodged. Every level can be beaten without taking a hit – and you’d better get good at dodging, as you only have three hit points.

The bosses operate on 1930s cartoon logic as well, and often involve both pun names and visual puns. The enemies change their attack patterns and often undergo physical transformations – often wild ones – as you fight your way through them. Unlike modern children’s cartoons, at times these could be fairly dark, and the bosses become increasingly intimidating in many cases as the game goes on, while simultaneously often maintaining their comedic air and recalling ideas from the early 20th century like mysticism, hypnotism, and old school circuses and amusement parks.

The game’s core gameplay is pretty simple – you can move around, angle the cursor to shoot at angles (including downwards), crouch and shoot, do an aerial dash, and “parry” pink objects, which absorbs them, bounces your character upwards, and charges your super meter. There are five stages to the super meter, and you have both a basic “super” attack which deals some extra damage and goes through enemies, and a more powerful one that consumes all five super meter stages and gives you a devastating super attack that can chew off about half of a boss stage’s hit points, makes you invincible, or boosts your attack power.

In addition to the boss stages, there are a relatively small number (about 2 per world) of levels that consist of running through a stage beating a series of enemies in a more standard side-scrolling type game. These levels themselves can be fairly challenging (though they’re generally breathers compared to the bosses) and they help mix up the gameplay by incorporating more standard 2D platformer elements.

Between the stages, you walk around in a “world map” type thing, where you can interact with a small number of NPCs, who will sometimes challenge you to do things and reward you with a coin, or going to the shop, where you can spend coins to buy new options for your characters. Some are new attack options – such as tracking shots that deal less damage, or the ability to charge up shots like Megaman at the cost of not being able to hold down the button to fire continuously – while others enhance your character in other ways, such as making you invincible during a dash, giving you an extra hit point at the cost of dealing less damage, or automatically parrying when you jump.

This game is fun, but not in the same way that something like Portal 2 is fun. Rather, this is a game which is fun because of its challenge and because the aesthetic pairs nicely with the gameplay. You are going to die if you play Cuphead. You are, in fact, going to die many hundreds of times before you get to the end and win your soul back from the Devil (gambling is bad, kids!). If you don’t like hard games – if you don’t like failing many times while learning the bosses patterns, so that you can finally succeed – you won’t like this game.

But if you like the idea of working hard to overcome a series of difficult mechanical challenges, this game is likely right up your alley. And while the game is very hard, it is ultimately fair in its difficulty. The charm of the game helps to make the challenge feel less miserable, and the fact that there is a constant goal hovering ahead of you, pulling you forward, makes it feel like you are, in fact, making progress, no matter how many times you fail.

The art is hand-drawn and inspired by 1920's era cartoons, something I found to be a breath of fresh air with a unique quality that I've never experienced in a game before. The animations are a joy to watch with many new animations few each boss, I must have died 50 times overall trying to watch wildly varied boss transformations and attacks instead of dodging the projectiles. Nothing feels recycled at all.

Each boss has a highly personalized level aesthetic with 1920's inspired jazz that accompanies it perfectly. It was incredibly exciting to see each new level and see how the boss's aesthetic would fit into the scope of the landscape. The boss's that occupy each level are absolutely a joy to encounter, even if they're kicking your ass because of the level of attention of their animations, the level design, and the matching aesthetics of the music and bosses.

The game-play is incredibly tight. I can't recall an instance where I was hit due to poor controls or a bad hit box. When I was killed, which I died a lot, I felt that in 99% of cases it was due to a poor choice by me, with the other 1% being due to a boss using two abilities back to back that made it impossible to dodge. Even though I died a lot, it never frustrated me. The pacing of the boss battles makes each death feel like a learning experience rather than time lost. The boss battles average 2 minutes or so, with many deaths occurring in the first few phases as I tried to learn the patterns of the attacks and how to approach them better.

Cuphead is a highly engaging game that requires patience, thought, and skill to beat. It has pushed me to be a much better gamer because it pushed me to do things I didn't think I was possible of doing. The art style initially captured my attention, but gorgeous visuals can't carry a game. Cuphead is the complete package in terms of art, sound, and game-play. Thanks Studio MDHR for this experience. Thanks for not giving up on your dreams of making such an ambitious game.
