This is essentially a professional quality modification to “Blitzkrieg”, handled by another Russian developer with ties to original producers Nival Interactive. [Mar 2006, p.61]
  2. Cuban Missile Crisis is a unique strategy game with a very cool premise and setting, though the combat itself can be a difficult mess.
  3. The game has some fine elements, but feels a little too directed at times and while pulling two diverse genres together is novel, not really enough attention was paid to either to create an experience that will draw players back time and again.
  4. The concepts and ideas are great, but the real time portion is in need of some improvements.
  5. The problem is that déjà vu quickly sets in as there are only a handful of map templates. What's more, without a proper Skirmish or multiplayer option, if you're adverse to such hardships it won't be long before you're pining for something more upbeat.
  6. The dynamic strategic campaign is also a welcome addition and works well. However, where the game’s strength should lie is in the tactical mode, yet this is disappointingly weak, particularly in single-player mode.

Patient, strategy-minded players who don’t mind reading volumes of on-screen text littered with typos may just fall in love. However, the onerous difficulty and complexity, along with grueling amounts of typo-riddled text, will quickly discourage most from trying to conquer this nuclear wasteland.
  8. The real crisis here is the lack of enjoyable gameplay.
  9. The potential was there, and it could have done so much more.
  10. About the only people that are going to enjoy this game are the ones who really get into alternate history settings, or people who really like a lot of details in their units and can put up with the problematic RTS glitches. Be prepared to micro-manage. Be prepared to save and reload. Often.

If the actual battle engine were better, this would be a great game. [Mar 2006, p.86]
  12. Cuban Missile Crisis will only appeal to hardcore RTS fans or anyone who has a strong interest in playing a hybrid RTS/Turn-based title.
  13. Problem is, I’ve been here before. The gameplay is nothing special. There must be a dozen games of similar design and feel. This particular title certainly hones and refines this style, but there is nothing to shout from the rooftops.

It's all been done before - and a hell of a lot better to boot. [Feb 2006, p.54]

Full Review »

Excellent game. Good historic facts and detailed recreation of 1960s technology.
