I thought this was just going to be another graphics showcase like a lot of new games are, but I was surprised to find substantial story elements and fantastically fun gameplay. Granted, the story isn't Half-Life 2 but it actually develops throughout the game and easily exceeds the likes of the ever-popular Halo series. The graphics are without a doubt the best ever made, and provided you don't run it with antialiasing on (which doesn't make a big difference in this game anyways) the game runs pretty smooth. Don't expect to be able to run it in all very high DX10 without the latest and greatest cuz there's no denying that it was built for next-gen hardware. I run it on a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 768 mb ram, and 256 mb Radeon 9600xt which are all under minimum requirements and I get an average fps of around 20, so it seems like people are overbitching. The AI contrary to what many people say, I found quite good. If you snipe an enemy with a silencer, other enemies won't react until they see the corpse. They'll try to flank you, take cover, and what's really interesting is if you shoot with a silencer at an object behind an enemy, that enemy will react to the sound, caused by the impact of the bullet, and look back to see if someone is out there. It's not the greatest game ever, but it's damn close. The multiplayer is fun but it's not anything revolutionary, although i found the vehicle-based gameplay more fast-paced and fun in the long run than the battlefield series. Far Cry was good, this is a masterpiece! Expand

The first part was pretty decent, but it was clearly Far Cry 2. Nearly everything was the same. The mid section, inside the mountain was ok, but it was a blatant ripoff of Prey, from the textures, to the floating around, to the general action. The third part, with the snow and ice, is decent, but the game play is plain annoying. Those stupid alien thingies are just plain ridiculous. I love lots of enemies (loved painkiller!), but these blue things are just plain dumb. You can't kill them, the weapons all stink, and the old nanosuit is useless. But the rest of the experience frustrated me so much that its been disturbing my sleep since i finished the single player campaign. I close my eyes and think about what the h*ll happened. I longed for this game so much like everyone else. When i first jumped in i was excited and tried to kill off koreans in fancy ways until i realised all i had to to was shoot-take cover-stealth-repeat. This made me use maximum speed through the bushes and palmtrees whenever i could just to get to the next checkpoint to see if it would get better. It didnt. It got tons of worse. After the koreans came the koreans in nanosuits, you could especially tell they were koreans since they had the same behaviour as their comrades without the fancy suit. The following tankdriving and shooting was nothing special. Beautiful interiors of the alien mothership completely ruined by predatorlookalike aliens. I was happy when i finally get out of there to see the frozen jungle. Had looked forward to that. When i got out of the snowy weather and starting to drive away from the bubble i got really worried. And not without reason. Only thing left in the game was some flying through valleys and some running about at the carrier. That hunterboss on the ship looked kickass but was a complete letdown like everything else. And the bigger spaceshipfight defied all logic. How could that not blow the carrier out of the sea? Holy crap, i have not been this dissapointed for a long time.
    5 points for graphical achievements.

I agree with one comment that the combatants seem a bit too clairvoyant sometimes and can spot and shoot you through thick brush from 100 meters away, but can't seem to find you on the other side of a building. The nanosuit is innovative, but frustrating. The speed boost is perplexingly short and the inadequate amount of charge the suit has makes multitasking with the suit enhancements impossible. The disadvantages implemented for certain advantages are nonsensical. Silencing a weapon makes it ridiculously impotent and is hardly realistic. Running the game is a challenge as well, but the flexibility of the video settings can make for a playable mode for a decent system. For my FX55, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS I run at 1600x1200, no AA, all medium settings and manage only about 15-30 FPS. Running AA at any resolution greatly reduces the framerate. But overall, this game is very addictive and worth the buy, especially considering the rarity of non-linear shooters. Expand

The gameplay is fun, the powers are cool, however...with objects disappearing at a certain range then reappearing when you're close (even enemies) it's impossible to scope out a place and find the safest route because as you run for an area suddenly an enemy "appears" in what looked to be clear area beforehand. How unrealistic is that? Next, even if I do find an enemy at a safe distance and go for a shot, the guns you use are horribly inaccurate at a range of more than point blank. I remember doing single shots at maybe 200 meters from the enemy and have about half a clip unloaded before he died. This leads me to another thing..a guy gets shot, he looks around searching for you, runs around aimlessly, does not look to take cover. horrible AI anyone? "5 Koreans dressed in black? In white? With gold chains?" You see where I'm going with this. Sooner rather than later, you yearn for something else other than taking care of the same old 5 Koreans. Unfortunately, it takes a very long time for this to happen, and by then there's only an hour of the game left. 2. The bugs. There are numeous bugs. At one point I managed to split in two, with the game rendering 4 arms, legs and two weapons. In another incident, a Korean walked past a crate, bumped his hip and fell over dead. Unfortunately, minutes later so did I. So avoid the crates! They may sit there looking all woody and innocent, but they're cold-blooded killers! 3. You can beat the game by using cheesy tacitcs, like exploiting your cloak, as I did. Run right up to a guy with cloak on, switch to speed (so you regen energy), head-shot him and immediately cloak again. If you balance your health with your energy (hint: cloaking makes health increase, energy decrease, and speed is the opposite), you can run into a room full of enemies and take them all out with impunity. Well, impunity and the odd quick re-load. However, since killing the same old 5 Koreans got a bit dull, no matter how I did it, I used cloak and speed to bypass many fights altogether. It's not like I was missing anything that I hadn't done 50 times already. 4. WAY WAY TOO SHORT! (after you finish with the 5,000 Koreans) Just as the game was picking up, it ends. Well, boo. In total, I played one whole evening and a couple hours the next. And that's your lot, until the sequel. There will be a sequel, becuase the ending concludes nothing story-wise. Now If you just bought an expensive new gfx card, you'll probably want to give Crysis 10/10. After all, you've got to justify your investment. But seriously guys and gals, this isn't game of the year material. Engine of the year - sure I'll be happy to give it that - but not GOTY. Oh, almost missed something... 6. Re-spawning Koreans. Unbelievably, Crytek has not pandered to the console generation crowd. This is a pure PC FPS in the finest tradition of Far Cry, Stalker, Rainbow Six, Half life, and even Doom. The shooting is hard. If you aren't aiming properly you are going to miss at medium-long ranges. That's what's happening with people that claim it takes a whole clip to take down an enemy. Out of every ten rounds wildly sprayed about will 5 actually hit (probably in the legs and arms), and chances are a silencer is being used, and silencers halve the weapon damage at close range and completely eliminating it at long range. If you want to take down soldiers with COD speed, you need to remove your silencer, go prone, and preferably attach a scope. Then switch to single shot and use maximum strength for good measure to steady your aim. Oh yeah and if your target is moving you have to lead to account for the fact the game models bullet travel time. It's a little more complicated than the run and gun you usually see, and I applaud Crytek for including great feeling shooting mechanics. The AI here sets the bar for all other shooters to come. The sense that you are fighting coordinated enemy squads which flank, retreat and lay down suppressive fire is not reviled anywhere else. By comparison the other big FPS released recently doesn't even seem to do anything but suicide rush. Sure there are bugs, but on Delta prepare to be outsmarted and outfought on a fair basis - you never feel the AI is cheating. The suit powers are amazingly well balanced and supremely useful. Using the mouse button menu to switch powers was a stroke of genius. There is nothing like using maximum speed to run up to a soldier, grab him, and use max strength you throw him off a cliff. Pure unadulterated awesome sauce. The linear sections of the endgame perhaps don't have the sense of gameplay innovation that the first 2/3rds do, but this is made up with some incredible environments and enemies which I don't want to spoil. Storywise . . . well it's no HL2 or Stalker, and it never claimed to be. The story is unpretentious, workmanlike and does its job motivating you and keeping you on track. The only other game in recent memory that comes close to Crysis is Stalker, with its open environments and incredible atmosphere. Both are masterpieces, but Stalker's initial bugs hold it back from being my GOTY pick. Ultimately, as others have stated, Crysis like no other game offers you a blank canvas on which you can paint your unique brand of mayhem and destruction. With Crysis your creativity is the limiting factor. Expand

Crysis. We have been hearing about it for months. Promises of incredible graphics, innovative gameplay, ground-breaking physics. And now it has arrived. It lives it up to this hype. Perhaps due to being so often dissapointed in the past, I assumed Crysis would just be a pretty looking update to Far Cry, and at first glance that is what you get. However, deeper into the single player campaign you are faced with very high octane action sequences that feel more like they are coming from you, then scripted sequences around you. The level design is still cleverly linear, however never seems to feel that way, giving you insane amount of choice on how you tackle objectives. Once you get past the overwhelming sense of openness, and instead focus on achieving your goal instead of trying to explore everything first, you'll be set for some very intense action. I definitely see myself playing through multiple times to try different approaches to situations. Of course, everything has already been said about the graphics. However, if you find you are struggling running it at anything less then High, i suggest you just play a diffrent game, and wait for the console release as you'll definitely be missing alot of what makes this game so immersing. No mid-end gaming rig can run this on maximum settings at the moment, however if you are fortunate to have a Quad Core based system, and perhaps a new 8800 GT (or two) the game will play very smoothly at high settings. I've even tweaked some more features that are only available in the maximum settings, such as sunshafts, color grading, parallax occlusion mapping, and SSAO (something to do with adding soft shading around objects) which add ALOT of depth to the games graphics. With these enabled, Its the first true next-gen looking game. Finally, the multilayer seems very in depth, and objective based, and makes the recent Quake Wars look like Team Fortress 1. I'm looking forward to playing some more. Anyone giving this game a score below 7 has either not played it or does not have a machine to do it justice. ... Now if Far Cry 2 is half as good as this. It features huge open maps, instead of the classic linear routes from other FPS's, but I honestly think I prefer the linear routes. I find myself using a lot of time just running around to get to the next "checkpoint", and while the jungle looks amazing, it gets quite old quickly. The game's big gameplay apeal is the nanosuit. Now, don't be fooled by the amazing gameplay vides you've seen, because the actual game isn't that way at all. Al your powers are (greatly) limited by a power bar. Which means "Maximum Speed" only makes you sprint about 10 meters before running low, which in fact is worse than other games with a standard stamina bar for sprinting. The "Maximum Strength" is usually only used to get past certain obstacles that you either need to smash into pieces or make a super jump over. You would think it would be awesome to smash enemies in melee, but you walk terribly slow when you aren't using maximum speed. Some would say "hey just use speed to get to them and then switch to strength!" Yes, that sounds good on the paper, but in actuality it takes about a second t switch powers, and by the time you get to him, your power bar is low, so you cant punch him. The nanosuit was a great idea, but could be implemented a lot better. The shooting in the game also seems ankward. Most weapons are surprisingly unprecise and enemies can take a huge amount of bullets before dropping dead. The AI and physics system is also below standard. The enemies sometimes behave strangly and some times you'll get frustrating by the fact that they seem to be able to see and shoot you through vegatation - even from miles away. The first part of the game takes place in an ordinary jungle, but afterwards, we get enclosed in small, boring, uninspired corridors. The developers should really have deleted this part or reworked it. It was just not fun to play. When we get out agian, it's time for the frozen paradise, which Crytek hsa bragged about for months, and I have to say they had the right to brag. With all this said, Crysis isn't a terribly game. It's above the average shooter, but could easily become so much more with a few more months of development time, but EA is known for pushing deadlines before christmas. Expand

Though simular to Farcry in many ways, Crysis is a breakthrough in gaming. The suit with powers, the weapons, the graphics, and the gameplay were all up to par with cod4, UT3, Timeshift, and HL2 episode 2. I was worried that the game would eat my comp up for breakfast, but turns out I was able to max almost all the options aside from some shading and anti aliasing. With all these great games comming out, I'm putting my money twords Crysis. Some say this is just another Farcry, but I say its a step up in gaming! Expand

I know this may sound premature, but Crysis is taking the Battlefield online play to a WHOLE new level by combining the best of FPS aspects. Think of a game set in the future that takes the best from BFseries, and Coutnerstrike and put it all together in a nice tasty DirectX10 package. Bam, you get Crysis.

Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year. [Holiday 2007, p.60]
  2. Crysis thrives on putting the onus on you to create your own brand of action and adventure in its stunningly beautiful locations. You and the game can haphazardly create moments of such gaming brilliance that often you pretty much have to stand up and applaud. [Christmas 2007, p.44]

This is some fast, well designed gameplay with enough options to allow players to use their own style of attack with satisfying suit abilities and weapons. Crytek has upped their attention to detail in presentation and dropped the worst parts of "Far Cry’s" story.
