The weapons are pretty much balanced and the hitboxes are good. So many hours of fun I've had with this game.

There are a few quirks here and there which prevents this game from getting a full 10/10. For example, you'll occasionally get stuck on certain items in a map, the new Duel mode they added is really buggy and they added your win/lose ratio (I didn't need to be reminded how badly I sucked), and just a bunch of little things. This game is worth the $25 it costs and you will not regret it.

Problem is people think it's simple, so they complain a lot when they die, instead of seeing the tactic that brought them down.

This game is very immersive, it has some good blood effects and gore. The combat, which some lesser people claim to be luck-based, is in fact a very deep system with many tactics. The thing is, if people are too set on games being simple, they will feel it's about luck when they get killed by another better player using special tactics. You can hit people around the shield if they are not careful, and blocking is harder or easier depending on which weapon your enemy uses. The armours in this game also looks quite realistic and good. Other games always have these seriously weird armours with things sticking out everywhere or just armours that look like they weight about as much as a freight train. The ambience is very good, there are way cries and death cries echoing through the battlefield. And also a messenger shouting orders or reports to the presumed commanders further away. Animations aren't that great in some cases, but the swings are generally really good, it feels like there is weight behind them and you can't just randomly swing around, because you'll get tired. There is a good diversity in game modes as well, you can play through the "story" by going team objective, or just FFA or TDM if you would feel like it. There is also a special duel game mode where everyone gathers in one room and duel each other one by one, which is a great way to train duelling. There are also a quite interesting factor in the game, friendly fire, meaning you can accidentally kill teammates. This adds a new level of difficulty to the game, which in my opinion should be added to almost all games, it makes it more punishing to miss and hit your friend. Games like Battlefield and CoD could benefit from this in all of their gamemode, the only downside being that people are too stupid to avoid friendly fire. To counter this in Chivalry, which many people are too stupid to realize, is to simply use trusts and overhead swings whenever friendlies are nearby.

The guys working on this seems like good guys, like almost no other game companies are nowadays, they release new content and patches, and they aren't trying to make extra money by releasing a DLC which you HAVE to pay for to get these new things. They recently released a content update in late January together with a patch. I am seriously looking forward to new content, unlockables and more. If I had to guess, I'd guess they will release weapons and different armours soon.

Many people also claim they have lag issues, this is because they choose servers that have horrbile ping, because they have absolutely no understanding of servers what so ever. If you pick a good server and have a decent internet connection, then you will have no trouble. There might also be some unsupported routers that have created problems for some people. This is a big reason why many discard the game outright and write a bad review here, they are too lazy to fix lag issues. That is why they feel the game is unresponsive, choppy and "unfair", it is literally only because of ping, that's how ping works. There are no choppy weapons, this is because of lag only.

As for people claiming M&B has a better combat system... Yeah, swinging wildly with little to no weight behind your swings and never tiring seems perfect. They are just blinded by their on fan-boyism. I've played M&B, I love it. Chivalry has a more skillful and better combat system though. Duels are amazing. The only way M&B or War of the Roses, can be better is when you have a large group (clan or guild) that works together, which doesn't happen often. WotR's problem is that it doesn't have the maps designed for large scale, group or line warfare.

The only thing that Chivalry doesn't have, that WotR does have. Is customization options, in WotR you can create your own unique armours and coat of arms, which is really cool, since you basically have your own "house" you're fighting for. The problem with this is that many players tend to make goofy looking armours and such, destroying the awesome feeling of the game. WotR is also set in a later period it seems, as their armours look like they're from a later period of the middle ages. Bordering on 16th century armours, I'd say. There's far too little chain mail, which is sad, it was widely used during the middle ages, with only a surcoat over, something both games lack. Then later, it was used as further protection together with plate armour.

In conclusion, I love M&B, I love Chivalry. M&B is really fun with a giant group and lots of players, but Chivalry has a more skillful and immersive combat system, where there is a lot more techniques than M&B has, and War of the Roses.

What, a game is supposed to be fun, right? So, here goes a 9. It has the action, the good and bad emotions that are necessary to make you laugh and cry like a baby.

It does need improvements, but the dev team seems reasonable and eager to improve the game (that is an indie, recently launched).

I won't even say it's good for an indie game, because it's good compared to even the AAA games. I read through all these reviews and the only negative reviews here are from people who clearly haven't had the practce and/or taken the time to understand the combat mechanics fully (learn to play before posting reviews...). I do not recommend games lightly to friends and family, but I highly recommended this one. The combat is both subtle and nuanced, but yet has that easy to learn , but hard to master appeal. The graphics are great, for example if you hit someone in the head with a heavy Maul their head actually explodes, whereas if you hit their left body you may chop off their left arm, complete with bloody spurting to the cadence of their heartbeat and visible severed arteries and bone marrow.

The gameplay itself is tremendous with various pop cap servers which plays a large role in determining the types of fights you are likely to get. High pop servers tend to be Giant bar brawl/street fights like you would see in the movie Braveheart. Lower pop server tend to feature a lot of 1 vs 1's.

My only beef I think would be the archery system, it's pretty lackluster compared to how the melee is done and archers are always messing up your fights fro ma mile away. But, other than that it's pretty flawless.

Great game, it would be a ten but there's some gameplay (for lack of a better word) "exploits" that some players are really good at doing and it's kind frustrating because I've always wanted a game with a melee system like this. Once you understand the classes, and weapons, and how spacing, timing and swing speed can be manipulated by footwork and mouse movement, it becomes an incredibly nuanced and engaging combat system with lots of depth. It's one of the few combat games where you can get the feeling of an extremely satisfying and hard won victory, and it rewards actual skill. Yes, you can be affected by luck during FFA's and large battles where its hard to avoid a swing or see behind you, but that isn't a product of the combat system, rather the successful emulation of the fog of war and chaos on the battlefield. There are issues however: One is the archaic server browser and the buggy connections and frequent inability to join games with friends. Lag is an problem on some servers (its not apparent if it's my connection or the server software, or the client itself), and it can and will get you killed at times. Another is the actual lack of servers due to the awful console only dedicated server. However, both of these should be addressed by the devs in due time, so i'm not too worried. Finally, I personally don't think the bots are all that useful once you get past the basics... it would be nice if there was an advanced AI to really practice dueling and technique against. More maps and maybe weapons would be great as well, it seems like both are a bit light, even for an indie launch. (or the game is just that good that i want more)

All in all, I can look past the teething issues and see a really fantastic combat experience that rewards skill with a satisfying war cry and the blood of my enemies. TLDR: Great game with easy to learn but hard to master (yet rewarding) mechanics, early server issues are forgivable, could use more content and better AI to practice against

Objectives like poisoning the enemy's water supply, or lighting villages on fire, provides a very good replacement to the team deathmatch-style matches (not that it doesn't have these!).
Having said this, Chivalry feels somewhat incomplete, because it isn't polished. At all. The scoreboard in-battle is designed badly, so items often overlap each other, and the menus don't always work as one would like them to. The subtitles in the training level also get to my head - there is only a certain amount of "fightign", "im" (fighting, I'm) that I can take.
But these bugs and unpolishedness are easily surpassed by the sheer fun to be had in the game. Chopping people's heads off after sneaking up behind them will NEVER get boring.

Overall it's not got big studio production values, but enough polish to accomplish it's goals perfectly well, which include decent net code for finding matches and smooth multiplayer action.

This game is very addicting!!! I played the free weekend on steam and i was amazed! The atmosphere is so bloody and furious! The accuracy of the sound and atmosphere is perfect! If you are looking for a laugh with your mates! This game is perfect! I only scored it a 9 because of the price. I'd wait for it to be on offer. £18 is a bit too much.

The gameplay is very fun - who wouldn't want to experience warfare in the middle ages?

There are so many strategies and skills to learn that it takes a long time to actually get good at Chivalry - just like with an FPS like Counter-Strike. I think this is one of the hallmarks of a well-designed game - that it is hard in a way that isn't cheap, but takes time to master.

My only criticism is the lack of maps and gameplay modes.

Bought this game out of curiosity last week... and haven't stopped playing it! Sure there are few tweaks needed and some greater customization would be nice, but the core game play is great fun. Addictive and brutal combat although archers seem to have the least attention paid to them in game design .

    Gameplay
Chivalry has a simple to learn, but hard to master way of controlling sword strikes. It consists of clicking your mouse to swing (duh) which is made more complex by being able to use your mouse to speed up or slow down swings to fool or outpace the enemy. Stamina makes it so that it costs to miss an attack but makes it also cost to just keep blocking, as eventually you'll run out of stamina and die by doing this. HIGH LEARNING CURVE.

    Value
Many different servers to play on and many different modes and maps, there is a lot to do here and the developers are committed to the game and releasing new content.

I will note that this is a glitchy, crash-prone title and re-balances can drastically change the way to game works

    Conclusion
Chivalry is an excellent online offering that is worth the 6.24 I paid for it

Easy to learn, difficult to master. That sums up this game's combat. The game's combat largely depends on your preference and playstyle. You can hulk around wild swinging with a two-handed sword; you can run circles around people slicing them up with a one-handed axe; you can gracefully manipulate the distance between you and your opponent with a long reaching polearm; and so on. Defeating your opponent means assessing their style and doing your best to counter it. The depth seems subtle, but it's truly deep. But you can also disregard the technical aspects of combat and run in like a mad man. You might not conquer the game, but you can still have fun doing so.

The game could use some additonal modes for lasting appeal. But the core of this game--its combat--is highly refined and satisfying. The style of the game is spot-on for gritty high fantasy. The gore is shockingly well done. The animations feel fluid and natural. The atmosphere of the maps is well-polished and foreboding. All of this creates a high level of immersion. When you get sucked into the combat, you almost feel like you're really there. Dying in this game--especially after you've just made an error leading to a gruesome death--is an intense experience, and almost feels life-like. As you fall to the ground, blood pouring everywhere, you feel more than bested in combat. You feel like a sack of flesh, uselessly plummeting into the soil, questioning the purpose of your entire life. Okay, so I'm being a little melodramatic. But you get the picture. This game is awesome and is highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantasy combat game with the competitive spirit of first person shooters.

Chivalary is one of those games that can be played by mashing buttons, without regard of situation or without even knowing what you are doing. Same goes for any beat em up game.
Does that make the game bad? Not at all. When first playing the game, you will die. Often. Mostly because you end up inside the mobfight and there is one guy swinging the biggest and nastiest weapon he could find.

Here's the thing about class-based multiplayer: IT MUST BE BALANCED. In Chivalry, balance is non-existent, each class can be triumphed so easily, even by their own counterpart, as long as that player is vigorously pressing the Swing button. And that's another thing: blocking is pointless if someone just keeps using the "strategy" I mentioned before, since none of the shields can offer enough protection to block anything other than the typical default Swing; Stabbing and Overhand Swings will ALWAYS breach your defenses. But what's even worse is the Stamina system, probably the most poorly implemented feature that would've worked in its favor. Jumping drains your Stamina, successful blocks drain your stamina, normal swings drain your stamina, Sprinting halts your Stamina regeneration (not to mention its rate of regeneration being slower than it needs to be; if you lose even half, you're pretty much dead), these elements were a great concept, but because each action uses such a large portion of your Stamina, it becomes a struggle to even run away from the battle. Health can also regenerate, but will also halt while Sprinting, and does so at a rate slower than that of Stamina's. Classes: Archers kill everything from hiding spots, and Vanguards have too much reach and dexterity with their Spears. If you're not one of them, you will die every time you get within their range. The other too are what you'd probably expect in a game with class-based multiplayer: one is a fast, slightly-armored swordsman, and the other is a heavily-armored, slow-moving "tank." There's nothing much more to these other two classes. But despite the holes still left open in its gameplay, there are some moments where the game does shine. The story; well, there is nothing to it, just that you are a warrior in one of the two opposing factions. The tutorial level, or short single-player introduction of the game's key elements, introduces you to the game's key components, namely the combat system, so that you don't start flailing about like an idiot. The graphics, however, are stunning, and can draw you away from the major issues that most people tend to neglect and tolerate, even I was awe-struck by the amount of detail put into every environment, weapon, and piece of armor. Looking up at the beautiful blue sky with a natural glare out of the corner of your eye, whilst standing in the middle of a breath-taking landscape, is an experience that many games don't often simulate. And it can only be triumphed by taking a moment to step outside on a bright, sunny day. The music that accompanies each a brutal an unforgiving battle, can seem a bit out of place at times; hearing a soothing melody alongside a poor soul's head being smashed to bits, is not very pleasant, when you think about it. The sound effects are also well implemented, despite there being no sound from your armor itself when you are hit. From swords clanking, to raising shields; it all sounds superb, yet eerily realistic. Voice acting also played a part here, and for the most part, it is very well executed. Your instructor in the single-player tutorial gives off each line of dialogue with great emotion, but some of the NPC's which you may hardly hear, much less even see, don't fill their roles with the same amount of effort. Each player can also speak with several pre-determined words and phrases, such as a "Battle Cry," or even a "Thanks," which are all given with strong strong emotion as well, making it seem even more plausible that these could have been real people going to war in medieval times. All in all, this was a great game, but some of its potential was wasted when it came to the actual combat mechanics, making precise and carefully thought-out strategies seem unnecessary, and render button-mashing newcomers the dominant race. Still, I enjoyed this title to the degree of wanting to play it again, and I will continue to do so. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to enjoy something more than just guns and realism, rather, something with beauty and ambition. Expand

This multiplayer-only game features no single player story mode, although you will be given the option to play offline with BOTS. Chivalry is set in the fictional medieval world, where two armies; the Agatha Knights and the Mason Order are battling each other for control. The Mason Order was once a part of Agatha, however they has split into a newly formed order who wish to take Agathian’s lands. The player will be given the choice to side with the Order or the Knights. The story is told through its multiplayer objective games, where either side is given the chance to attack and defend.
As I have found, this game is highly addictive. My playtime can be set out in a ‘highly detailed’ chart.
1 hour Wtf? How did he? Why am I dead?
    2 hours *Escape* *Quit*
3+ hours Wtf? How did I? Why am I alive?
The game’s gruesome melee system is a graphic delight; nothing is more satisfying then killing someone and then attempting to slice off the ragdoll’s head to see it rolling down a hill. The game is running on the Unreal 3 engine and looks very pretty, although some of the scripted sequences need some more work. For example when a wall has been torn down with a Ballista (or any other more appropriate medieval tools( I don’t do too well with the thinking)) you can see the wall slide down into the ground with rubble sliding up as well as the many particle effects used to hide this, clearly not well.
Now finally the combat, this is the biggest review scoring factor. The game uses a real-time swing system; the player will get the choice to choose 3 types of attacks; the swing, the overhead and the stab. Each attack available will be given the ability to modify it location mid swing, enabling the player to cut behind a shield or through it when the game doesn’t like me, did I mention the game dislikes me? Four classes will be available to the player with different traits and abilities, each balancing speed, weapons and health; one of these classes is an Archer, is very out of place in this game. The whole game uses a melee system; the addition of archers just seems to be used to appeal to medieval enthusiasts. For a group of players looking to ‘clan-it-up’, all they need to do is move around their enemy to poke at this back until someone wishes to steal a kill.
Chivalry is an extremely addictive game, it uses an unlock system to drag the player through the archer’s crossbow for the sweet, sweet ‘clean’ weapon selection menu. The game is currently filling an empty market of multiplayer sword fighting, which means this is the best you’ll get; although that’s not a bad thing.

The only way to get good at this game is to play it A LOT.

That being said, you don't need to be really good at this game to enjoy it. There are a lot of low-rank servers that are well populated at the moment and they consist of most people just swinging blindly into each other having fun (with the exception of a handful of tryhards who make new accounts just so they cn get a fresh rank and kill noobs in low-rank servers).

What I described above is very important, because some people will want to be good at this game but won't be willing to put in the time which will result in them being frustrated and not playing again, wasting their money. Now you know.

Gameplay is Chivalry's greatest strength. You may see others comparing the gameplay/controls to games like war of the roses or mount & blade, but truth is there really is nothing to compare. They are all different games, but in terms of melee combat Chivalry's system is much more intuitive, realistic, smooth and in-depth (there is actually nothing else quite like it). I won't get into the details, but I'll just say that once you decide to graduate from swinging blindly, there are always ways to improve how you fight and there will always be new tactics you can encounter. The combat system is done so well, that people can even create their own attacks (using the drag mechanic), and people have created some very cool ones that are quite difficult to block, making the game fresh for everyone.

Graphically, Chivalry looks pretty good. However, it runs quite terribly. It isn't too hard to get the game running at 60fps though, which is what matters for me. I simply turn down all my settings and play it as smoothly as possible. If you have a rig powerful enough to run at 60fps with maxed settings, the experience will definitely even be more enjoyable for you, because the game does look really good (watch a video for yourself).

Chivalry is quite buggy. But despite what all the try-hards say, there aren't really any game breaking bugs. The only crash I've experienced in the past couple years is when I minimize the game as its loading a map. Crashing mid-game is something that, for most people, never happens. Most "bugs" consist of the rare occurrence of a swing ghosting through a player, or hearing the sound of a parry but still failing to parry the attack. 99% of the time, when your swing ghosts through a player it is because you or your enemy has a high ping, or server lag. There aren't any game breaking bugs. The worst thing to deal with in chivalry is the server lag, for more reasons than one. It happens frequently (at least once or twice every few hours) but not enough to be frustrating for me. Besides, the lag always comes and goes, it's never there for an entire game. The really annoying thing is that players will claim that you are lagging when you beat them, even though they have no way of differentiating from server lag and you possibly lagging.

Which brings me to the community. I'm not going to be that guy who says Chivalry has the best or worst community. Those people are idiots. However, I will say that most people in the game have one of two attitudes:

#1. If they lose to you, they will compliment you on your victory, attempt to find out what they did wrong and rematch you again to try and improve themselves.

#2. If they lose to you, they will call you a lagger, hacker, exploiter or no-life etc. These people rematch you because they are upset that they lost and they want to make themselves feel better. They don't improve quickly at the game compared to people who have attitude #1.

There are plenty of players with attitude #2, so just be weary of that. The game has a huge skill gap which is rarely found in other games these days that often hold the player's hand. Many new players find this skill gap hard to accept and will immediately resort to calling others cheaters instead of being interested in what makes them so good at the game (which is how you should think). In fact the skill gap is so wide that, without server lag and bug encounters, it can literally be impossible for a "newish" player to kill some of the oldest ones.

Overall, the game is one of the best I've played. I've put in almost 1000 hours now. There's hardly ever new content or patches in the game, but I'm always learning how to improve swordplay, which is enough to keep it interesting. Also, the game, at its heart, is hilarious. I can't finish one game without giggling or laughing. I almost always feel good when I play it. That always makes me come back. The exaggerated voice acting honestly doesn't get old.

I still have very distinct games..I can join one server and be doing horribly and drop and join another and get first place. But this game has a feel to it like Quake 2 did when I played...a bunch of players just having fun for the sake of fun. It's been a long time since I have openly laughed so much playing a game.

Archers - I have a terrible time with these..but some people appear to be really good. The timing is really hard to get down and I can only seem to hit a character sitting still.

Vanguard - I seem to do best with these guys, they have slow strikes but if you keep your timing right its pretty easy to win a duel.

Man At Arms - The fire pot is a great time...although dodging is tough to get right a good whack to the head with a mace can really damage opponents.

Knights - Too slow for me to really get into yet

The graphics are really nicely done. The sounds are hilarious in my opinion. I love when 10 people run screaming into battle, it has a charm to it because its not professional quality. The various gameplay modes are fun, some involve pushing a cart to an objective or knocking down a castle door. Free for all is really fast paced and a lot of fun as is team deathmatch.

Overall I have a great time playing this and havnt been able to put it down for weeks.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is one of the easiest games to jump in and have a blast, but the learning curve for new players is very hard. Most new players swing left click over and over again without thought or strategies; this is a mistake. Hell most of the reviews that were low score were made my "gamers" that never understood the true versatility of the game.

Most of these reviews were written before the major updates to the game. The devs have added to the 3 main attacks(right shoulder overhand, horizontal swing right to left, and a stab), now you can swing horizontally left to right and swing an overhand from the opposite shoulder. This adds depth to the game and makes defending and attacking more versatile. The beta was full of glitches and problems affecting game play, 90% of them have been fixed.

I'm level 35 with 450 hours in the game, i know this game forwards and backwards and the ability to adjust you swings by slowing them down and speeding them up with a movement of your mouse is one of the greatest innovations in a game in many years. Hell you can lean forward and backwards at the waist to do a matrix lean back dodge or duck under an enemies swing. This adds so much to the game in the way of learning curve. Not only do you have to hit someone that is dodging under and around your strikes but you have to dodge around there swings as you miss over there head and they come in at close range to hit you while your still swinging your whiffed strike.

This is a real time strategy game with twitch based game play, but you wont see all this till at least 10-15 hours in the game. Normally around level 15 is when people start to "see" the animations of the characters as second nature and react instantly to the swings. I have never played a multi-player game that was harder to master and more rewarding to learn in. There's nothing quite like pulling off a new move in combat and getting it to work at the dismay and of the enemies in the game.

There's a lot more to the game then people think. For example, when preforming an overhead attack(alt overhead is best) the swing starts behind you. If you jump at your opponent and turn 180 degrees around(back to them) and swing a overhead in the air while leaning backwards you can hit your opponent with your back turned to them. This sounds a bit ridiculous, and it is, but its not easy to do(100 hours of toying with it for it to work right and look smooth). I gave this example to show that the reviewers have NO CLUE how in-depth the melee combat is. Our group of player, |MonK|, has formed its own style in the game were we do 360's while jumping and swinging, mind you that it does not look glitched or break the game by exploit. It is very hard to do and takes way to much practice, but the rewards of being able to preform a perfect 360 to reverse 180 to 360 while swinging and hit them is all worth the time.

THIS GAME IS HARD TO MASTER!!!! TRY TILL LEVEL 15 TO GET A FULL VIEW OF THE GAME.

In closing i would say buy this game, its only 25 bucks and that is very cheap for the gameplay it offers. There are lots of games made by AAA developers that cant stand toe to toe with the epic gameplay and utter controlability of this game.

    Hope this helped,

Classes are more balanced now as I understand, I still get the itch that archers should just be removed from the game, or limited to how many can be on a team, I'm not saying that it's cheap, because using the bow is pretty hard, but it kind of takes away why I even wanted to play the game: first person melee, but you end up running for 45 seconds to get to someone and then you just get taken out by some a-hole sitting on a tower, that you can't even shoot back at or counter in any way. Then you find out that some people play in 3rd person, which I hear is much easier, well if I wanted to play a third person action game I'd go play something that does it much better than this game. But it does give you an advantage in being able to see where your strikes are actually going.

Overall, it's a unique experience to say the least. Battles with 40+ people are chaotic and fun. They just need to flesh out some things and I'll play it more than I currently do.

OK so this game might not be every ones cuppa' tea. I'll try my best to break it down in the simplest of terms.

Chivalry is a game which requires a fair amount of practice and skill to play well. So MLG power weapon hoarders on Halo need not download. Strategic use of blocks, faint attacks and class play is required if the only way you can enjoy the game is to get a perfect K/D ratio. Though when you first play be warned, your ratio will be negative and that's ok.

The fun of the game, for me, comes from the participating in giant skirmishes on open battleground. Charging headlong into a skirmish swinging your weapon in the hopes that your blade will be guided to victory and then discovering you've just decapitated your team mate. Yeah there's a fair few team kills so get used to saying sorry, a lot.

Bloodshed in this game seems to think that Mortal Kombat just challenged it to a gore off, all sword attacks seem to chop off some part of your opponents body and leave them crying into the ground as the blood spurts from their arms. Just don't admire the effects too long or you'll find yourself joining them.

Even fist attacks have the power of Thors Hammer in every swing as fist only matches tend to end with you knocking more heads off than Liu Kang at a bar fight (points to anyone who knows who Liu Kang is, which better be all of you.)

Such a game of bloodshed and scream is accompanied by a variety of modes to back it up. Classic TDM and Free-for-alls are complimented by objective based team games such as Defend the King and others. This also comes with custom modes such as bar fights in which only fists are allowed and low gravity modes for those of you who are complete sadists.

In summary Chivalry is a game you better get used to dying on. Cause you'll die lots before you get good.

I love the Medieval style in Chivalry, from a mod Torn Banner Studios made a good game that travels you back to the historic times. And although I don't agree to DLC, Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior which is mostly based (as far as I know) on the TV series adds some new classes like Samurai, Knight, Pirates and more!

    Arrrrggghhh!

If your looking for a deep, thought provoking plot or characters you care about, you should probably steer clear of Chivalry. That said, it's satisfying and fun beyond belief. Bugs and seriously strange voice acting aside, it's a great "Sit on the couch, put on some Netflix, grab a Coke and slice off some limbs" game. An awesome way to have fun.

It's a fun game, worh the price, but at the end you may become frustrated by the animation and not momentum based combat the game has.

The combat system basically boils down to the following: your opponent starts spinning essentially making a sword field around him and by the Schrödinger paradox the weapon is always there or not and you cannot find out until it has gone past you or hit

Basically the high level gameplay is literal nausea inducing ballet but the rest of the game is pretty enjoyable and actually skill based.

I haven't played WoR or Mount & Blade so I have no prior experience with medieval melee combat games. I bought this game because it looked hilarious and it was on sale for 13 bucks. Even at 13 bucks its not really worth it but I still enjoy the game for what it is. It's just a casual game where you can split skulls for 30 minutes. The graphics are dated, the performance optimization is questionable and I couldn't see myself playing this for more than an hour every couple of days because the game lacks depth. Also, the music is disgusting.

Even with all its problems Chivalry is still fun and worth trying out if you can get it at a discount. The game modes are fun and sometimes if you get on a roll you can take out a large portion of the enemy team without dying. It's a decent game but I feel there is still a lot more work to be done. I hope this game sells well because it might mean more developers attempt to improve this style of multiplayer combat.

While it has the potential to be a great game it's plagued (for the better part of a year) by poor frame rate and lag, even on high end machines and the developer's apparent disinterest to remedy the situation is all the more reason to buy this game only when its on sale.

Great game with best medieval combat mechanics made so far. You can block, feint, combo, stab, slash, kick, throw things, this is absolutely great. Sounds are heavy, realistic and help the immersion a lot. The combat is also quite bloody, you can chop off someone's limbs or head, so not for everyone's taste (I think you can disable the brutal combat visuals though). There is a vast amount of weapons to choose from, 4 distinctive classes and many diffrent game modes ranging from simple deatmatches to sieges with catapults and ballistas Maps are interesting and there are a lot of them (for example an arena pit great for deatmatches). The graphics are not really that good, especially the maps look, well, quite ugly to be honest. Also I hate the game's music but hey you can turn it off (it's not Modern Warfare 3 where you couldn't Lol).
Game has some problems with hit detections and lags, but it's not so drastic like some people claim.
Solid game gets a solid 7/10 score.

I wish the game was slightly more historical, but iI understand that this is not how they planned it which is fine. It is a very hectic type of game which pretty much just relies on running up and flanking people and hitting them when they are fighting someone else to win. The blocking has a delay to and can not be held, which is fine for one on one but not to great when vs more than two. The archery is slightly disappointing and doesn't really feel like a real bow. Its still a good game to play and have fun with never the less, but I feel it is lacking quite a bit and is heavily over hyped by all the people on you tube who where given beta key to promote it. The problem is the ability to win with the old hack and slash strategy. Regardless of how high your skill level is, there will always be some people interrupting a battle slashing away randomly and getting an ungodly high score. It's incredibly easy to counter this on a solo fight, but in FFAs and anything higher than 2v1, it's impossible. Still that's in the hands of the players and not the fault of the game. The game just lacks replay value. I'm not very fond of playing this very often because it's not the most appealing thing I've ever played. It gets dull rather quickly and I'm only motivated to play every once in a while. Expand

This game isn't perfect but gives a nice combat system that's unlike most and the game is a great way to kill time. I recommend giving it a try and for how cheap you can get the game it's worth the investment. Just prepare to die A LOT!

Its more like this is a great idea, and could be a fantastic game, but the devs aren't making that happen, i.e. the current execution is not ideal. If the game works performance wise (i.e. you probably have a decent, with a year or two of age, gaming computer), then you can have a lot of fun, assuming you can get past the bugs, mainly those of the server browser (i.e. difficultly joining servers), and those in combat. Really, this game is best when you don't take it too seriously (because of gameplay bugs and balance), which is a problem for those looking to be competitive. The skill ceiling, despite the few simplifications and such the devs have made (possibly not on purpose), is still pretty high and there's almost always some cool new trick or maneuver or whatever you can learn. The game has seen a lot of patches, yet there seems to be a pattern: Fixing one things breaks another, sometimes meaning that an old bug is brought back. The dev team really seems inexperienced. They have poor communication with the community and poor transparency. Its seems to be a common enough thing that major patches have gradually decreased the performance of the game (optimization of the game never seems to have been visibly (and non-trivially) addressed). For example, the game is neigh unplayable for be now, in that load times are extraordinary (~3 minute launch times). Expand

In other words, it is kind of the opposite of the "easy to learn, hard to master" motto Blizzard has; Chivalry is hard to learn, easy to master.

Overall I would still recommend it for the shouts, decapitations and the fun you have during the ten first hours of the game, but would warn you about how you'll quickly grow bored of it.

A multiplayer experience that offers a realistic point of view of the Medieval melee battles. It's not fit for everyone, but if you get past the glitches and the high difficulty curve, you'll find an enjoyable and addictive game.

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor. Chivalry is Quake to War of the Roses' Battlefield, and those seeking a faster-paced bloodier experience will undoubtedly prefer Chivalry's type of steel. [March 2013, p.65]
