Jan 2, 2024Playing Born of Bread was the best choice I made to finish 2023. I was very happy that my last game was a party-based RPG that warms you so much in these winter days.

Dec 4, 2023It's always a pleasure to experience such a well-crafted, lighthearted game, and if that's what you're in the mood for, then get your wallet ready.

Dec 18, 2023Born of Bread is joyful, designed to appeal to a wider range of audiences, with a quirky narrative that can draw some laughs and mechanics that are easy to understand. The story holds few surprises, but I liked the characters, even the background ones. I can’t say the same about battles. The idea of audience participation is intriguing but doesn’t mesh well with the rest of its systems. And the cycle of attacking and defending will quickly become repetitive. Born of Bread has a host of good ideas and will deliver hours of fun for players who click with all of them.

Feb 8, 2024All in all, I loved my time with Born of Bread. It’s cute and has a heart, and that kept me playing despite combat that didn’t hit the mark and party members that were a bit hollow. However, it’s a shorter RPG with speedy progression, and the main quest was one I enjoyed seeing through to the end. Sometimes a cozy fairy tale with simple mechanics and good humor is enough to satisfy, and that’s certainly what was delivered here.

Dec 4, 2023This title is ideal for those actively yearning for a new type of Paper Mario experience or newcomers to the genre. If the sense of humor is in your style and you don’t mind the simplicity, then Born of Bread is a definite must-play. Otherwise, you’re better off pursuing other inspired journeys.

Jan 2, 2024Born of Bread’s recipe for a light role-playing adventure is competent, thanks to charming visuals and combat that favors variety over difficulty. And while it’s great to see a Paper Mario-style expedition on PC, it’s evident that the process was a bit rushed. The occasional crash or underdeveloped mechanic doesn’t ruin the formula. But these can leave a sour taste with players.

Jan 2, 2024Born of Bread adds another entry to my ever-growing list of games that I wanted to love but left me with mixed feelings. It’s clear that a lot of heart went into Born of Bread. I loved the bevy of unique characters inhabiting the game’s world, and the second half of the story was quite engaging. However, Born of Bread‘s confluence of minor flaws, including a lack of convenience features, marred my enjoyment. Born of Bread is not a bad game, but those seeking that magical Paper Mario experience might be better off waiting for the upcoming Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remaster.

Mar 26, 2024Despite some gripes, Born of Bread feels like a team of creative and talented designers were given free rein to design a world the way they wanted, even infusing it with genuinely hilarious comedic writing throughout. However, the limitations enacted by the combat system upon itself, i.e. being beholden to ally and enemy affinities without any way of adjusting them to fit the situation at hand, actively hamstring the game’s positive aspects. The QTE-style attacks make the whole thing a needlessly repetitive chore that undermines the joy found in the game’s world design and writing. Those with a love for all things Paper Mario surely won’t mind it, but everyone else will want to go into the experience prepared for what’s to come.

Dec 4, 2023It's a real shame that these problems are so prevalent because there's a lot to like in Born of Bread. It's a very cute and charming game, and I enjoyed myself enough when playing it that I was willing to redo chunks of the game every time I broke something. I replayed sections until I just couldn't do it anymore. There's a good chance that there will be a bunch of patches for the game that will help it rise to its full potential, but at the moment, it's a bit too raw to readily recommend. I look forward to revisiting the title sometime later, after it's been thoroughly patched and stabilized.

Dec 14, 2023Born of Bread looks like a game that will be easy to love. The art in screenshots looks lovely, and Paper Mario-inspired titles are always welcome. It’s a lovely formula that lends itself to a lot of joy. But the developers completely misfired on this one. It comes across as a flat fan project that had original art assets dropped in at the last moment, rather than a cohesive creative work with its own identity, and, sadly, it’s one of the dullest games I’ve played this year.
