I played BL2 a lot of times, and lately with mods that let me run faster and jump higher, making the backtracking much easier, so TPS' mechanics was familiar, but with the welcome stop-the-flying-and-land ability. There is a modest amount of backtracking and ton of edges and invisible walls that hinder most direct route. Sometimes I was caught up in slightly tilted surfaces and some small steps my character couldn't step over. The game was quite stable but hung a few times until my internet connection returned. At first I thought the butt-slam and the huge amount of elemental barrels will be fantastic, but 90% of my deaths were caused by those barrels and unwanted slams around them. Otherwise, most boss battles felt easier. I found a few bugged challenges and some quite evil ones. I'm not really satisfied with the loot quality in TPS; since it has a bigger pool for the random loot to chose from, It becomes even less likely you get a better version of your current favorite weapon. I got a nice sniper rifle at level 12 and had to retain it till level 23 to get the next better with the same elemental damage. The grinder is a nice addition but still random enough and due to the backpack limit, you'll end up hoarding the to-be-grinded weapons much longer than before. The legendary drop rate seems to be lower as well. The mouse look felt a bit strange, quantized, so targeting distant enemies was difficult due to large jumps even for the slightest mouse movements. The voiceover is good and the character talkback is a good addition, but since I'm not familiar with the Australian word jokes and style, It wasn't as funny for me as BL2. The location and background music is not memorable at all sadly. Some say one shouldn't consider the price as a factor int the score, which I agree with if the said game is really good, otherwise you'll feel regret about your impatience till a sale. I would say, this is what a 90s expansion packs looked like; almost an entire standalone game but still overshadowed by the main game. Which is sad because I'm sure a lot of design and development effort went into it. I'm not sure if I'll buy any of the DLCs on this one. Expand

The problem with Borderlands goes back to the original game and the recipe that all the teams have stuck with TOO LONG. The combat (ITSELF) is NOT interesting. Finding new and better guns IS Interesting for a bit but that dies as you reach the level cap. The character builds are NOT interesting. So what are we playing for? It has to be the STORY. And here stands the PROBLEM. The story right through Borderlands (ALL THREE BIG ONES) is BAD! Look what happened to all the DLC for Borderlands 2 which consists basically of terrible 'jokes' and 'memes' rather than anything serious! All the DLCs were TERRIBLE in all caps. Really dreadful. So what we have here is the excruciatingly boring and unfunny Borderlands story again. More of the same. I think the writers don't really understand comedy or qualify as comedic writers. Comedy is used by people to alleviate existential but real PAIN. The Borderlands world is a cell shaded comic book game world where death and 'suffering simply can't be taken seriously. There is no need in such a world for extra comedy. Instead there is a need for some 'SERIOUS' themes to big this funny world some 'believable' GRAVITY. This game was pretty much doomed to fail because 2K has been showing their ignorance by giving us lots and lots of REALLY terrible DLC for BL2. This game is just more of the same. Definitely don't buy it now or the season pass. Gearbox and 2K do not deserve your faith. If previous DLC is anything to go by the DLC for this will be even worse. I think 2K Australia did OK with this but it's hard to make a truly good game where the men at the top have not diagnosed where their franchise is lacking: IT'S THE WRITING. It needs a TON of weight to balance out the excess of light-hearted 'comedy'. MORE GRAVITY not less.

This is Borderlands, to the core, and a great credit to the franchise.

I enjoy seeing the story leading up to BL2, and some of the side mission stories are cool as well. Seeing Jack be ... nice. The birth of the robot army. But, I will stop there, no spoilers.

As I write this, I see a small flood of spam in the reviews, people hating on the game for various reasons. Everyone is most definitely entitled to their opinions, but a lot of what I am reading makes no sense. This is NOT a DLC or expansion, it's a full on game in it's own right.

People saying the humor is lacking, really? Have they actually played it? The humor is spot on for the BL series. Complaining that some weapon designs and textures were the same as in BL2. Well of course it is, it takes place right before BL2.

People complaining about the $60 price tag, and while I am have been a long time critic of overpriced games, there is most defiantly $60 worth of game here. If you go for the full Borderlands experience, it's going to take you dozens of hours to complete, per character. Like all of the other BL games, we have coop as well. So I am not sure what people are complaining about.

Oh well, I guess some people just really like to complain. They hate it when you change something, they hate it when you leave it the same, sometimes you just can't win. Borderlands have become one of the largest, most popular, and most recognized franchises in the gaming industry. So it's expected to attract some hate.

Rest assured, it's unwarranted. If you truly enjoy Borderlands, then you will enjoy The Pre-Sequel.

None-the-less borderlands is still a great formula and the gameplay is hella fun and interesting. I will say, however, if you didn't like the past Borderlands, this game will do nothing to dissuade you. It has a new world with new areas and is honestly only a few hours longer than Tiny Tinas DLC in Borderlands 2. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Couldn't play this game for more than a half hour.

Let's start from the beginning. As a Big fan of BL and BL2, I had hope for this game, and gave it an open-mind. Through some Gearbox discussion, I heard about this game way back when, and was excited for it. I thought it would be fun.

From the beginning, before the game starts, the famous "skag scene" for this game was less than exciting. In the previous titles, the opening scene with a skag always set the beginning of the game in my opinion, and that scene was decent in BL2, but was inadequate in this title. You're looking at the skag, then the skag has bandits around it, that's the opening.

The start of gameplay shows you meeting ClapTrap, but not even that lasts the time it did in previous titles. The base is immediately under attack, ClapTrap tosses you a kit, you already have a gun for some reason, and you're in battle within a couple minute. There's no entrance whatsoever. No storyline, just you getting gear and fighting.

Oh, then you get to fight FOR the **** that took over Hyperion. I understand this is before the second game, and he hasn't quite taken over yet. It is still a great big middle finger to the player if they've followed the story line of the second game.

You're then launched onto the moon, where you meet the first quest giver there. You're then asked to travel without air and unlock a locked building. This is where I happen to run across those new...geo-lizard things, died a few times in front of that door because of my noob weapons, finally cleared it out long enough to get inside and get an Oxygen mask.

Then after that you're asked to go kill someone. Simple enough right? Wrong. On the way there, you are required to fight several enemies without any cover, all you get to do is jump around avoiding fire, and trying to ground-pound, then running and refilling your oxygen while being shot at.

When I finally reached the guy you have to kill, I gave up after several deaths, realizing I couldn't defeat him with the new mechanics, as well as the fact he has baddies spawning all over, is constantly making the ground electrified, and has an overpowered weapon.

That's the first 30 minutes (or more) of game play, from my perspective.

Some people have been calling it lazy, which I certainly can't disagree with.

That being said, the game is still really fun. The new characters are really cool, the story still has its snarky dialogue and oddball missions, and the new items/weapons they added are fun. It's not a short game--and of course you have TVHM (they're version of game-plus)--and DLCs are on the way, so I don't at all feel cheated by it.

In conclusion, don't get too scared with all the negative reviews and try to be objective. If you enjoyed Borderlands 2 and don't feel like it bored you easily, then you'll really enjoy this game; if you're looking for something entirely new for the series, then you might want to avoid it.
