The best game in the entire Battlefield franchise, a very good campaign, a majestic soundtrack, some impressive graphics with many details, a complete epicity, the only thing was that I found 2 bug, but it does not matter since the campaign and the music is outstanding, etc. So I'm not going to judge that two bugs at all. Very Good Work DICE !!!

Now, unfortunately the single player is pretty dull and heavily scripted and is very linear, but the Battlefield franchise has always been about multiplayer, and this game definitely delivers on that front. Some hardcore Battlefield 2 fanboys are upset about changes from that game into Battlefield 3, but in all honesty this game looks amazing and feels amazing. If you are looking for a new multiplayer FPS game to satisfy you, look no farther. If you are already a Battlefield fan, this game is up there with the best in the series. Would have been interesting if they added a health system similar to Red Orchestra 2. And the series hasn't really evolved lately, it looks and plays better then ever before, but it is basically the same sort of content that was back in 1942, 64 player conquest maps (altough TDM & SQM is also fun). There is so much room for creativity, but no, BF3 is just BF2 streamlined and made prettier. Expand

The campaign is short but still very entertaining and epic with some very varied and challenging missions. Co-op offers seperate missions and equally diverse and unique challenges.

The one glaring issue with this game is the 'Battlelog' system. It is clearly EA pushed experimental garbage and makes actually playing this amazing game a pain in the ass. However, this game deserves to be played despite it's atrocious browser based menu system.

Ok, the single player is a joke, but you don't buy BF3 for the single player. The multiplayer is amazing. The maps are awesome and the classes are well balanced. Whats great about BF3 is that it actually rewards teamwork and tactics. Also don't be scared of the graphics requirements... runs surprisingly good on pretty low end systems.

A lot of people are really hating on this game, and I can sort of see why. The single-player is basically another "shoot-shoot-shoot-cover-tank setpiece-shoot" game, sort of like Call of Duty. However, what it lacks in innovation it makes up for with fun gunplay and very tactical gameplay. The multiplayer, on the other hand, is what makes the game for some and breaks for others.

However, what it lacks in innovation it makes up for with fun gunplay and very tactical gameplay. The multiplayer, on the other hand, is what makes the game for some and breaks for others.
To start, the games battlelog.com client is just ridiculous. It's like a main menu, but in your web browser and thus absolutely pointless. It's great that it controls the entirety of BF3, which is something I hated about the new Call of Duty games (having to launch a different player for multiplayer) but when you have to "launch" your web browser from Origin and then launch the game from your browser, it gets really dumb really fast.
Also, in the multiplayer is a very steep learning curve. You'll find yourself getting very few kills and many deaths for the first few games you play, getting shot instead by people you can't see or getting blown up by missiles because you have no IR Flares.
Once you get past this curve, though, you'll find a very deep and extremely fun tactical shooter. PC players have an advantage over console players in that the warzones can be up to double the size of console games, and of course a filtered server browser. Managing bullet drop with sniper rifles is easy to learn but very hard to master, and mechanics such as flying jets or helicopters have similar skill requirements (If you expect air vehicles to go forward with W, you are sadly mistaken, friend).
In short, if you are the type of person who enjoys a lot of simple, frantic gunfights and being a one-man army, then Battlefield 3 is the wrong game for you. But if you can put time into the game, you'll find a multiplayer experience pretty much incomparable to Call of Duty.

The game is very fun. Singleplayer is worse than BF:BC2 somehow in terms of fun but the story is ok.

Multiplayer is a blast. It usually requires some degree of teamwork, but when both teams are cooperating, it's a visceral experience. Even when I lose, the game is still fun (if there's teamwork). Visuals: I just meet the minimum requirements but it still looks AMAZING! Audio:

    Gameplay (Single Player): 7/10
    - The single player campaign, in particular the story is a bit out of place. If you are buying the game just to play the single player, look elsewhere.

    Game play (Multi Player): 10/10
    - It amazing, this is the very reason why you would want to buy Battlefield 3 in the first place.

    Game play (Co Op): 8.5/10
    - Its fun, but the fact that you only get 6 ~5-10 min long missions, its more of a diversion rather than the meat of the package.

    Online Services: 8/10
    - BF3's online services is detailed and has amazing depth. The only issue I've had with it was trying to get into games with friends as parties...

    Replay Value: 10/10
    - Give the history of the Battlefield series, we can expect tons of top quality mods to be coming out within the next year or so, this in addition to the amazing mappers out there should definitely extend the shelf life of BF3

I had high hopes for BF3 ever since i saw the sneak peak trailer, and after playing the game several hours a day everyday since it came out, I can honestly say it delivered, and delivered more than I hoped for. The classes are balanced, weapons feel great, vehicles are fun and not overpowered, and the graphics are simply stunning. If you do not have a top end system to play this game then you are doing yourself an injustice, it's just so absolutely gorgeous on max setting. I've always been a loyal CoD fan, I've reached max prestige on both MW2 and BLOPS, but I am pretty sure I won't be getting MW3 because it doesn't seem to contain anything new and exciting compared to the previous 2 games.
Now let's move to the "cons", first there is Origin, something everyone seems to absolutely hate, i didn't like it at first either but after being forced to use it for a while I am starting to get a hang of it and found it to be not bad at all, once they fix all the bugs with it, it just might be a decent program. Then there is the single player, DICE tried pretty hard to make the single player more modernwarfare'ish, but didn't quite reach their goal. I don't think it's bad by any means but i doubt I'll finish it unless my internet goes out or something. People reviewing this game based on single player's quality is just silly. 99.99% of the time spent in this game will be spent in multiplayer, no one expected DICE to deliver a decent single player experience and I think they did ok with BF3. Multiplayer is what battlefield is about, and your reviews should reflect that.
Overall if you want the best multiplayer experience, then this is THE game to get, just make sure you get it on the PC :)

Sound is superb; you know how in some games you hear gun cackling in the background of a city or something and you know it's just a programmed in sound on loop? Well on this game, that gun cackling is actually a player in the game firing their weapon. Every sound heard is a real player interacting with the environment, eg. a jet flying over, explosions going off, etc. This is evident if you go into an empty server you hear nothing. The graphics are also superb, and although I found the destruction engine a slight bit disappointing, I still love the fact you can roll through a building with a tank surprising those sneaky snipers camping inside. I played Battlefield 2 a lot and I know Battlefield 3 has some features missing from it that I would personally like to see implemented, such as commander mode, and two of the maps do seem to be a bit too linear, with major bottlenecks, but that's only two. All the rest seem fine to me. Oh, and the mortar is a completely ridiculous weapon. Saw some guy camp out at his spawn with it the whole game and ended up with a score of 32-0. Problems aside, there is much fun to be had with this game, and I'm sure if we give it time most of the problems wil be sorted out. Expand

Well I'll tell you that the answer is Battlefield 3. If you're looking for quality, polish, you need never look further than Battlefield. I had stood on the line when it was Bad Company 2 vs Modern Warfare 2. I gave a few days to each, and decided at the end of the day, Battlefield was the better game for my dollar. With the near simultaneous release of Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, I figured this would up the ante. And then I watched the trailers and gameplay, and it became clear then, MW3 was treading familiar territory. Instead of stepping up their game and remaining a contender, they folded. I waited for MW3 to release to confirm my suspicions before filing my own review.

Since MW3 doesn't have critic reviews for PC yet, I'm comparing the XBOX 360 reviews:

    Critics: BF3: 84 MW3: 90
    Users: BF3: 7.0 MW3: 2.6

Let's hear it for bias! Who are these critics, supposedly reviewing these games? I'll admit, 7.0 is pretty low. BF3 90% of criticisms: Singleplayer: short/easy/linear. Don't like Origin and the launch from browser format. No squad voice communication. CoDesque.

Are these valid? Single player I found enjoyable, but not groundbreaking in the least. I don't care for Origin, but don't mind it for BF3, the one game I will ever use it for. It would've been nice to have voice for squads, a missed opportunity. Game breaking? Not in the least. And no, I see no reason to compare this game to CoD in any meaningful way, no reason to take shots at it on that regard alone.

Now let's look at MW3 criticisms:

Exactly the same as MW2 and Black Ops. Same perks, streaks, weapons, gameplay, graphics as the previous iterations.

Huh, well if the users found this so horrible, what did the critics think?

"It's hard to believe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has finally arrived let alone lived up to all the hype surrounding it. "
"Modern Warfare 3 is a shining example of refinement and improvement."

Could this be their serious take? Possibly. The positive reviews from users do mostly acknowledge that it isn't treading new ground, but that it refines what the series has always done. But personally, for value, that's what I'd expect from an expansion or DLC, not a new, full retail price game.

    Conclusion:

Battlefield 3 multiplayer is what sets it apart. The sights and sounds of war are unparalleled. The environmental destruction, while it isn't perfect (no game has achieved that yet) goes a long way to immersing you in the combat. Each map is unique from the others in look, feel, and tactics. The combat feels cinematic and intense. Vehicle combat, which I typically have not cared terribly much for in prior BF games, I thoroughly enjoy. It is not a perfect game. It seems everyone expects the next big thing to be that. In the world of military shooters, which try to mimic actual combat, it is particularly difficult to hit. But BF3 has taken an ambitious approach, providing a high quality experience. The best graphics on a shooter to date, coupled with fantastic attention to detail and realism from sound, and destructible environments that change the face of the battlefield as you go.

Battlefield 3 has upped the ante in every department, something which it's competition has failed to do. My hopes are high that CoD will deliver the next time around, but until then, Battlefield 3 reigns king.

Best FPS to date, fun as hell. Very strategic way of engaging the enemy keeps you on your toes. Also vehicles and aircraft are the cherry on top. Slightly difficult learning curve but eventually you get used to it. Recommend to anyone who likes FPS and was disappointed by COD

Amazing graphics, realistic and accurate gameplay, absolutely mind blowing sounds. Forget the single player thats not what this game is about. This game has Choppers, tanks, helicopters, jeeps, anti aircraft vehicles, mortars. The game is so immersive, you really feel like you are in battle, and the team based play is fantastic. The co-op maps deserve one go around just to unlock those guns you may want and to see the levels then you shelf those as well. But the multiplayer, oh man the multiplayer; that is where you will spend your BF3 life. 64 player large conquest maps is what makes this game amazing. Dog fights between jets high above you, choppers buzzing the roof or silo you are recon-ing from, and tanks/jeeps/IFVs whizzing past you as your infantry trudge out onto the battlefield; these things will nearly distract you from the fact that you are about to be shot at and you are going to need to find some cover. If you are just playing Public servers and not really communicating with your squad or team then the game will feel a bit sluggish and more like a kill-fest rather than a tactical game. But if you get a group of buddies and actually comm with them then this game takes on a whole new light. Multiplayer has so many unlocks, so many vehicles, and so many things that can happen that you will keep coming back way past hitting max level (which will take you a suspected 400 hours to accomplish in full). The moments you encounter in this game aren't called "Battlefield Moments" for nothing. This franchise and game has spawned its own terminology in regards to the epic scale of "holy sh*t" moments and "omg did you see that?" Pick this title up and you will not regret it Expand

The bad? Single player is a token effort. For multiplayer you are forced to have both Origin and Battlelog running to play, which is short-sighted by the devs. The game is not perfect, there is the occasional minor design quirk or bug, but nothing gamebreaking. But in short, if you have any game on your 'to buy' list at all this year; BF3 has to be it.

I'm rating this game based on BFBC2, which if I had rated it at the time I would have given it a 10/10. So unfortunately I wont be playing BF3 anymore, but it was fun for the +20 hours I played it. I'll be going back to BFBC2. If you have bought BF3, keep on playing it, I still gave it a 9 for a reason. Never bomb a review because the delivery service **** up. Yes, it's the same company, but if you want to review Origin, go review Origin. After all, once BF3 is installed, it generally stays out of your way. Here, we review Battlefield 3. That being said, this game is not what I was expecting. It takes a lot from Bad Combat 2, yes, but it is certainly not a clone of it nor BF2. The in-game UI is simple and effective, the spawning options keep the old "Battlefield Sprint" to a minimum, and the customization options are easy to access and switch quickly during a round. The balancing is great for classes and weapons, not so great for some maps (Metro and Canals are the biggest culprits here). Leveling up is genuinely rewarding and easy to follow. The controls are dead simple. And above all, the graphics are amazing and well-optimized. Even on low settings, the game looks fantastic. As for the singleplayer, yes, it's lackluster. But most Battlefield games are not focused on singleplayer. It's basically a tutorial on how to play the game - it walks you through a lot of gun and vehicle options, and you learn how to control them in a safe environment. Sure, the story's bad, but if you're buying any Battlefield game for singleplayer (or, for that matter, any FPS) you're making a huge mistake. Co-op is better; while the story is virtually non-existent, it's still fun to play with a friend without dealing with respawning. Multiplayer is definitely where the game shines. Battlefield has always had top-notch team-based gameplay, and BF3 is certainly no exception. Glitches? I've seen a few, yes, but who hasn't in any FPS game? The basic gameplay mechanics work very well, glitches are mostly just cosmetic and excusable. I have only had the game crash once, and it was because Windows blew up. Battlelog is not as bad as people make it out to be; it is useful in a lot of ways, and while I do agree that having to use a website is a pain, you get used to it after a while. Adding friends to games is easy, especially in platoons, and generally lands you in the same squad on the same team. Get yourself a Teamspeak server, some friends, and BF3 is really a great game. Why 9/10? The singleplayer was bad, yes, but it's such an insignificant part of the game - basically just a tutorial - that it doesn't impact the rating that much. Origin was a giant mistake, sure, but it's only in installation and, from what I can tell, this Metacritic page isn't about Origin. The bottom line is this game is definitely one of my favorite FPS games of the past decade - maybe, just maybe, edging out BF2. Expand

It has its awesome moments here and there, but fails to deliver an emotionally gripping story that war movie lovers (Blackhawk Down, The Hurt Locker) like myself crave. Fair enough, at around 4 hours, it's too short, and the characters, plot and presentation are cliche. You'll suffer several cheap deaths, and the quicktime events are jarring and annoying. But considering Battlefield 2 didn't even have a single player mode, it's a bonus that there's even a single player campaign included here at all. What the campaign lacks in innovative story, it makes up for in atmosphere. There are some truly impressive moments during the single player campaign where the game nails the atmosphere of running into a warzone, but unfortunately it just doesn't capture this feeling all the way through. Several times at the start of a level you'll be presented with some huge vista, only to be funneled into a corridor level with few options for exploration and deviation. Thankfully, the online multiplayer is the meat of this game, and in this area, the game does not disappoint. There are a half dozen coop missions that parallel the main campaign, and these are fun for a play through or two with a friend. But the online deathmatch modes are where it's at. The maps are HUGE, and there are plenty of unlocks and awards to keep a player busy for many hundreds of hours. The gunplay feels good, the vehicles are fun, and there are some great game mechanics, such as suppression fire, and the ability to use smoke as cover or flashlights to blind an enemy, and tactical environment destruction. It's a technical masterpiece too, although I do wish there was an option to turn off the 'dirty camera lens' effects. Special mention has to be made of the sound in this game, the sound effects are spot-on. The bad points of the game - It's a jewel of a game wrapped up in a turd: Battlelog, and Origin. The install process is annoying. You have to have Origin installed, and if you install Origin off the DVD, it has to update immediately and restart before you can continue. Plus it requires installing a 500MB patch, then two web browser plug-ins for Battlelog, and you have to have the latest graphics drivers. Once through the pain of installation, Battlelog is tolerable for finding servers and friends, but feels like an ugly third party add-on matchmaking service. Is it too much to ask for a server browser that is well integrated into the game? The other annoyance - there's no LAN play, and this could be a deal breaker for some. Dice have hinted this might be patched into the game later, but don't hold your breath. It would be nice to be able play the multiplayer maps offline against 'bots, and on a LAN in coop with friends, like you could in Battlefield 2. If you can put up with the hassle of Origin and the Battlelog interface though, there's plenty of fun to be had here. Just don't buy this game for the single player only, you will be disappointed. This franchise isn't about singleplayer, so i'm not basing my score on that. As a multiplayer game it's unbeatable, well, you will know what i mean if you've ever played a BF game before. Vehicle combat is brilliant, lots of fun to be had with jets and tanks, and the anti-air vehicles (currently OP'd). Everything seems to be balanced with most vehicles as long as you have the right unlocks. Infantry wise, some of the unlocks might be OP'd, one being the IRNV (infra red scope), and another, the mortar. I'm not so sure the vehicle disablement feature works well but it's a new edition to the battlefield franchise and i welcome the change (it's optional depending on the server you join anyway). It doesn't work well with jets as i can never get a kill with one.

If i am to nit pic even further... the spawn system is bugged, the squad and spawn screens should have been better implemented, like in BF 2142. Jumping over obstacles doesn't always work as it should. It's a real shame not to see a proper BF intro but the implementation of battlelog is very much welcome as long as Dice sorts out all the bugs with it. The Commo Rose (Q button) needs to be patched asap.

I would have liked a few better modes instead of the usual Rush, TDM, and Conquest modes. Something like a Titan mode which can be found in 2142. Co-Op is a welcome edition, although i haven't played it much.

The game looks and sounds absolutely stunning. I didn't notice the low res textures that IGN pointed out, maybe they were looking at the monitor with a pair of pink frilly binoculars, or maybe i was reading a review of the console version? The sound is slightly better than BC2, which is really good.

Overall, it's one of the best FPS out there. I won't give it a ten because of the bugs and a few other things, but i'm sure the new patch will fix those.

Let's start with Single-Player: The storyline might be generic, but it is a well-executed one that does make sense, and has some pretty good voice acting at times. Some moments were executed well. One certain execution of a character was a real punch to the gut, even more so than "The Coup" from Call of Duty 4. Another scene really is a shock to players, I'm not going to spoil any more. But this game really did pull off some great set-pieces. For the gameplay, if you played CoD you know what to expect, One mission does give you full control of a tank, but sadly that is the only mission that gives you full control of a vehicle. The gunplay however, feels responsive, and thanks to the Frostbite 2 engine, Is complete eye and ear candy. Bullets whiz past you, Rockets deafen you as you hear chunks of debris fall the the ground, and guns sound realistic. The graphics are beautiful as well, and the campaign takes about 8 hours to complete. The Quick Time events I did not have a problem with, They at least give you some form of interactivity in the cutscenes, unlike CoD, where you just sit and watch. One quicktime event with a rat gives you one of the funniest death scenes ever.

Multiplayer: I have NEVER had THIS MUCH FUN in an Online FPS EVER. This Multiplayer in this game cannot be missed. The game gives you a ton of Variety, From 64 Player Conquest, to 32 player Rush, to 16 Player Deathmatch, This game has something for everyone. The maps all feel different, From Wide Open Deserts and Forests, to tight Subway Tunnels and Alleyways. Rush can give you tons of variety in a single map, for example, Operation Metro starts out in a wide open Park, Long range combat, Counter Sniping, and flanking, Then you drop into a subway, giving great close quarters battles, and really requiring you to push on with your team, to a slightly wider Ticket Area, where you have to flank while teammates lay down Suppression fire, Out into the beautifully designed City, Where pieces of buildings crumble down, Meaning Snipers are not much of a problem if you have explosives. 64 Players is intense. Jets fly above you, Helicopters crash down, Tanks roll across the desert. Rockets and bullets fly all around you. This game cannot be missed when it comes to Multiplayer. Online FPS of the year, without a doubt.

The biggest problem I've had is getting into the servers I want, unfortunately server queues are turned off as they interacted weird with the matchmaker.

I haven't gotten around to the single player yet, so I can't really make many statements on that other than I'm glad it's not the acid trip that the MW plot has turned into. I'll gladly take something somewhere near reality instead of following up on Red Dawn '09 (seriously, I hated that movie to begin with and then they re-did it in a video game TWICE!). I have always thought BF needed some sort of real single player mode, if only to ease new players into the controls and gameplay.

Co-op is a blast, difficult as hell sometimes but very fun. I do recommend playing with somebody you know, as communication is fairly important in some of the missions. I liked that they provided a variety of scenarios to play, offering a bit more variety than a -> b run-and-gun. The score system and different difficultys add replay-ability, if only to help a friend unlock the co-op weapons for MP. I really hope they are planning to add more in later.

The heart of the beast, Multi-Player mode proper, remains at it's core the same. Conquest is still considered the primary game mode, offering the structure of take-and-hold objective-based gameplay we've all come to expect from the series. Rush is making a return from the Bad Company series, and for players new to objective-based play (or just feel like shooting anything that moves for a while) they've even added in the all-time classic Deathmatch for the first time in a BF game.

Now some people weep over the loss of the commander position (and all the drop and strike powers it had), but I for one believe the game is better off. Previously, a lot of power was held by one player who was randomly placed into that job at the beginning of a round (well not completely random, but...). This guy could either be a boon or a weight on the team's neck, especially if he wasn't paying enough attention to the map or just felt like screwing around. Game balance must have been difficult to aproach with such an unpredictible element to the game. So starting in BFBC2 they ripped the position out and handed the old powers down to the players as kit, a trend that continued into BF3.

Speaking of kit, unlocks are fairly streamlined but still have a bit of depth to them. Expounding on previous versions of the system, not only does each kit have their own unique gear to unlock but each vehicle group now does too. Additionally, weapon mods are no longer unlocked generally by the class but are instead rewarded on a gun-by-gun basis. I think these are strong moves for two reasons. One, it makes the player feel rewarded for more specific actions while playing. And more importantly two, it keeps the better unlocks from being easily gainned (a delay for balance in a way).

The classes have been re-organized again, though not quite as drasically as when they consolidated the 7(?) older classes. Assault has gone back to 2142 in being the medic with under-slung weapons for their rifles. Support got back the ammo crates, stole C4 and claymores from recon, got a mortar (the current "artillery strike"), and use LMGs with the newly-functional bi-pods. Engineers remain mostly unchanged with anti-armor rockets/missiles/land mines, a vehicle repair tool (with an RC version), and switching PDWs for carbines. The ever shifting Recons still have sniper/marksman rifles, but now have a deployable motion sensor, the squad spawn beacon, a vehicle marker light, and a motion-sensor equipped RC drone. All four classes still feel like a cohesive package, each one having plenty of toys to play with.

This has been a bit rambling, and is not a "true review", but I just wanted to address the general shifts in gameplay in the new BF. I can't really get enough of the game, and I am thankful Back to Karkand is coming out at the end of the semester. If you still haven't bought the game, then you're probably lucky in missing the typical launch bugs. If I was smart, I'd wait until after the first patch cycle for every new game before I buy. But I just had to get back on the battlefield.

Do not be deterred if someone says that its horrible. Its not. THE CAMPAIGN:
Eh... good. Not perfect, but if you let yourself enjoy it instead of going off your nut about how unrealistic it is, its amazingly fun. Its a good attempt at a combination of over the top and realism, but its confused in what it wants to be. Stay true to BF BC2 style, or try to take in some people off COD. It tried, admirably. Its setpieces are amazing, if a little forgettable. But you wont.

    FROSTBITE 2:
If I hear another tard saying that they cant run it fast on a intel gpu ill shoot something. This is a true PC game, so make sure you have the power before turning it to ultra. It can properly scale it for you. Update your drivers, youll have a blast. It looks amazing, it will not dissapoint. DICE has gone that extra leap in the sound and visuals.

    MULTIPLAYER:
Brilliant. Everything that Bc2 did well its built on. Its impossible not to have fun if you get in the groove, but it can be a little annoying if you have that string of stupid revives or respawns that give you a ill feeling. Instead of tring to be COD it outdid it in its own niche. Youll find yourself in an adrenaline rush as you and your teammates systematically blow thru walls and shoot **** Its amazing, totally immersive. Not the (unfortunately) terrible arcade and stale multiplayer filled with 12 year olds in MW3. I wrote a review for that.... it was ghastly. Either way, its an amazing game with room to grow; its still near perfect now, but look at BC2; it was the best multiplayer in 2010 after DICE patched it and added a few things.

    FINAL VERDICT:
    Er, 10, obviously!
Id like to try and convince you that im not a fanboy, but the assumption of a 10 is that I am.
im not. But I feel like this game is probably the best SHOOTER ever made. The effort and workmanship is astonishing. Its reviewer score is much more relevant to its actual game status and not the user score ruined by people who are COD fanboys or expect it to be COD. Buy it. Enjoy.

With a game like this, it's easier to describe what's wrong--anything I don't mention you can assume is awesome. So with the multiplayer...your biggest problem might just be the sheer intimidation factor. There is so much to do and so much pressure from your teammates to pitch in that you might wish for the clean individualism of Call of Duty. But fear not--this is your game. Experiment. He is a troll, games that a dedicated for reviews scores of a 1 or below include: Hulk Hogan's Main Event, and Big Rigs: Over the Road racing. Now, onto my review. I know what people say about the campaign, but I personally loved it. The deaths were not expected, but were actually believeable. The main story might've been a little cliched, but what happened in the game itself was different than what was done before. Now, the score: The score is absolutely amazing, and after I right this, I will proceed to buy it off of iTunes. The music isn't always blaring in your ears, but when it is playing, it really compliments the game. The mulitplayer is one word: competely expectation- shattering. I was maybe a little scared about how Battlefield 3 would be, but all my doubts were put to death. The multiplayer is amazing. You can't wait to get your next unlock, and DICE doesn't shove a new unlock down your throat every game, conquest NEEDS teamwork, and so does rush, which seperates battlefield from other FPS games. Btw, jkneuper, I'm sorry, but you are an idiot. Squad voice chat is by no means a reason to reduce a games review score by 8 pts. You can communicate with them with text chat by pressing L, or have them be your friends (unless you don't have any :P) and join their party, or Ventrilo or Teamspeak. I have played Battlefield since the beginning and it is amazing to see how it has grown. The sound is absolutely amazing, and as are the graphics if your pc can support it. I got into the game and the graphics and sounds were AMAZING. As realistic or better than I could ever have imagined. The 64 player multiplayer is probably about as close to an actual battlefield that you can have without actually going into combat. You WILL need a very high end computer to reap the full benefits of playing BF3. A lot of the people having problems with BF3 is because their computer isn't very good. NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT BATTLEFIELD 3 IN IT'S CURRENT STATE (WITH BACK TO KARKAND).

I will admit upfront that I am a longtime Battlefield fan. I have owned and sunk many hours into every Battlefield ever made (including modern combat). I will also admit that I am not a fan of Call of Duty. I enjoyed all of the games up to Call of Duty 4, but after that, it became too fast paced and competitive to enjoy.

Now, with that out of the way, I am NOT going to base this review on whether Battlefield is better than Call of Duty, nor will I base it on the previous Battlefield games. This review is meant to help someone who does not care about either franchise make an informed purchasing decision.

Graphics (9/10): The graphics in this game are beautiful. While they are not the most beautiful I have ever seen, they do an amazing job of making you feel integrated into the game world. I love the fire effects, I love the detail work, I love the shaders. However, they decided to put a blue-ish tinted filter on. It may not be noticeable at first, but eventually you will be all like, "Hey! Everything in this game is blue!" there was a great article explaining all of the post processing they did, and the blue is supposed to evoke emotion while playing (or something). However, my biggest complaint about graphics would have to be the sun glare. If you are facing the sun or trying to shoot at a helicopter in the air, you will be almost completely blinded by the sun glare. I would have given graphics an 8/10, however the fact that DICE created a whole new engine and made revolutionary graphics for the first time in years gives them that extra boost. Do research into a new GPU if you haven't already, this game is demanding.

Sound (10/10): The sound in this game is excellent. From rounds whizzing past your head, the crack of stray bullets striking the concrete, or even the echoes of your gunfire being reverberated off of the distant scenery gives this game an intense atmosphere. Vehicles sound like vehicles. Guns are loud and thick. helicopters have different effects depending on where you are in relation to them. I could go on and on about the sound because the sound, in my opinion, is unrivaled. If you were considering buying a sound card for this game, do it. And buy surround sound too.

Multiplayer gameplay (8/10): Since the campaign and the multiplayer are so drastically different, I am splitting them into two separate parts. The multiplayer is fantastic. In cooperative, there are 6 missions for you and one other person to play through. In multiplayer, there are APCs, tanks, helicopters, jets, jeeps, anti-air, boats, and even forklifts. Even if vehicles are not your thing, the infantry combat feels very effective with 4 diverse classes. The game has a variety of game modes including rush, conquest, team deathmatch, squad deathmatch, and squad rush. In all, I am impressed with the multiplayer. However, there are some significant flaws which the developers have failed to take care of (as of yet). For one, there is no balancing mechanism. I understand that dedicated servers dominate the list, but there needs to be some kind of balancing mechanism present. I cannot count the number of times I have been put on a team who is losing 15 to 300. It gets very frustrating as one team will just plow the other round after round after round. Also, there is no spawn protection. I know that many people do not like the idea of spawn protection, but eventually after spawning and being immediately killed before even having the chance to move, they will warm up to it. There are a few more flaws involved, but those are the most glaring.

Single-player gameplay (4/10): If you are considering dropping the $60 on this game just for the single-player - Don't. The campaign was O-K. Sometimes I really enjoyed it, other times I wanted to pull my hair out. There is no reward or recognition for completing the campaign. The story was somewhat confusing, and the characters were very uninspired. If anyone has any military or LE background, the techniques the (spoiler) interrogators use are glaringly wrong. Just skip past it. Interface (6/10): If you are purchasing this for the PC, you will HAVE to use Origin, and you will HAVE to use Battlelog (a website from which you launch the game). Why the developers thought this was a good idea is beyond me. At first it seemed impossibly evil, however it is beginning to grow on me. In-game the interface is somewhat clunky, but acceptable. DICE has already made adjustments improving the interface with patches, but they have a ways to go.

Overall: Ignoring the single-player entirely, this game receives an 8.25/10. The multiplayer is fun, the graphics are beautiful, the sound is eerily realistic, and there are many things to unlock. If you are looking for a new FPS experience, this is the game for you. And for the BF fanboys: This is not BC3; this is not the BF2 sequel. This is BF3.

They know what they are and thats a MP experience and if you wanna try support the single player, then you obviously haven't played any other proper single player experience this year as the market is littered with better experiences. Now back to battlefield 3, i'll start with a list of innovations in gameplay and graphics.... The destruction system, while flawed and not red faction, its still really immersive and realistic. Terrain deformation, bit of wall flying off wen trying to hide.... its insane who good it looks. I mean I see a bunch of enemies hold up in one area, fire a rocket above them and the building falls and kills them all. Like wow! It brings new levels of realism and immersion to the experience. The animation system they built is incredible, characters die, move, shoot, you name it, they do it so realistic its makes you stop a marvel at the true innovation they've incorporated here. Vehicles looks amazing, firing a tank in a wooded area and all the trees bend to the shockwave of the force from the cannon.... WHAT GAME DOES THIS! So amazing to watch. Small little innovations to gameplay also to balance the experience are implemented like flashlight blindings, laser sights so blind snipers out of their camping poistion, not to mention the lense flare if the sniper point in scope at you specifically. All these little things help push the genre forward.

The sound in this game is unrivaled by ANY game. Just amazing, I feel like I'm in a real battlefield from start to finish of a map and it truly shows what can be done these days. This is the game you show to non-gamers to show them how far games have come and how much room for improvement a lot of games need to make to even come close to competitive with this great title. You can tell they put so much time and effort into a truly deep, immersive and NEW experience than its previous iterations. New engine = yes imo. DICE you've done it again 10/10

But no one buys a BF game for the single player. I'm happy to say that BF3 MP is what BF2 fans have been waiting for. While many of the original maps were not suited for 64 players save for 2 or 3 the Back to Karkand expansion does a wonderful job of filling that gap with HUGE classic levels and even more destructoid. What I am really happy to see DICE improve on is the infantry gunplay. Battlefields weak point was always the infantry combat but they really went above and beyond here. The biggest dissapointment doesn't have anything to do with the game but I feel should be mentioned here. This is a game that really requires teamwork and unfortunately most players seem to be selfish and only play for themselves. I am sick and tired of seeing someone run into an APC and drive off by himself when you have 7 people needing a ride. People just don't seem to work together but when you get into that rare server with those one of a kind teams it can be a real blast. A nice mix of close quarter assault fest with medium sized, oh crud im gonna half to run a little bit, to humungoid, oh crap where is a jeep--im tired after running that far sized maps. Smart teams that know how to play as a team will own stupid lone wolf noobs---just the way it should be. Snipers/kill freaks are penalized with very low scores due to lack of team objectives---just the way it should be. Vehicles are tasty. Unlocks are actually fun, because when you start you are not at an insane disadvantage. I can own full colonels as a private---the way it should be. This is a must own game. When you roll out in an Abrams with 2 others beside you and 2 super hornets pass over followed by an apache and a transport chopper...you will know what to do. Grab another beer and get ready for an all nighter, the wife can put some fresh batteries in her toy and take care of herself tonight! Expand

I thoroughly enjoyed this game, as a fan of BF1942, BF2 and BC2.

The multiplayer is a blast. They've taken the best of the Call of Duty franchise, and the best of the Battlefield franchise and mixed it together to create a perfect game. The sounds are rich, the graphics are crisp, the maps are fun to play whether you take your Assault Rifle or hop into a jet. With a bit of bugfixing and balancing, this could easily be one of the greatest FPS games I've ever played.

Battlefield 3, for a 10 year game, it was decent in my opinion. There were some parts that I did not enjoy inside the game though. Battlefields singleplayer disappointed me, but what angered me more was the fact the Single player + AI vs AI feature that was in Battlefield 2 was left out. I loved the feature because it gave a chance to practice how to play right inside each maps. I thinkBattlefield 3, for a 10 year game, it was decent in my opinion. I loved the feature because it gave a chance to practice how to play right inside each maps. I think people shouldn't batter BF3 because of the story, because they are starting to develop one for the first time. Sure, Call of Duty 1 and other great FPS's had great singleplayers at the start, but Battlefield is starting late so cut them some slack, okay? The multiplayer was great, it was really fun. The vehicles are as OP and lovable as ever. The unlock system is the same from Battlefield Bad Company 2. The attraction, though, is the humongous 64 player servers, which provide a vast area to cooperate and assault together. The game did a good job of making some people do their roles, because without Assault being a Medic, a team can be decimated real quick. I feel this game had more elements to Bad Company 2, I'm not saying it's bad, but I wished it would have focused on more Battlefield 2 aspects, such as Commanders. Commanders were the biggest part of teamwork inside Battlefield 2. Without a good commander, the other commander can decimate the team quickly. I was surprised there was no UAV, no Artillery, no Supply Drops, zip. Instead, each soldier had to do their jobs. I was REALLY disappointed commanders were left out, along with most of the kits that were diverse. There were good people in the community, though, who worked really hard to achieve victory. I was disappointed too that you couldn't choose your unlock like Battlefield 2. I liked the rank system becoming harder to achieve, like Battlefield 2, but people had to focus on one class alone to unlock certain classes. I wish they bring Commanders back in Strike at Karkand DLC's.

    If there can be improvements:
Go to what Battlefield 2 done right a little! Add commanders, an optional unlock system, and some classes! (I really wanted Anti-Tank and Engineer to be separate).

I do not like the Battlelog launcher site, it could just as easilly have been an in game browser. The singleplayer game is pretty stale, trying to capture the spirit of the MW series. Teamate AI is useless, providing zero support or cover for you and at times won't even bother to return fire on enemies and rarely hitting anything when they do, enemies however are much more adept at target aquisition bordering on the realm of precognitive. Simply put Battlefield 3 is great. If something can actually be called subtly awesome, Battlefield 3 is the case. Partly because of the generic art design, it's difficult at first to distinguish exactly what the game does better than comparable shooters, but the attention to detail, abundance of reflecting surfaces and complex lighting stands out the more you play it. I personally think this is truly an achievement in interactivity. Expand

The equipment unlocks can give too much of an advantage and even decent players like myself have no way of keeping up until we unlock centrain overpowered gadgets for our weapon. And you have to go through the same process for all of the tens of weapons made available to you. This isn't an MMORPG. I just want to drop in a battle every now and then. I don't have the time to unlock even the few basic things I'd like to be using. And, unfortunately, you can't fight without proper gear. Expand

(Singleplayer) The scripted sequences are quite good... I do have a problem with the rest of the game though. Firefights are confusing as hell, not enough cues as to what I should be doing and where I should be going. Most of the time the game sends me to my death, until I realize, after dying multiple times, what I'm actually supposed to do.
I'm not going to restart the game all over

Battlefield 3 is a truly spectacular FPS. I'm sure it's the game that DICE wanted to make. Unfortunately, it's not the game that I wanted them to make. I'm just going to make this short and sweet and break this review up into pros and cons...

PROS: - Awesome graphics, amazing lighting, and insane effects make for a very visceral experience. - Infantry combat just feels great.
Battlefield 3 is a truly spectacular FPS. I'm sure it's the game that DICE wanted to make. Unfortunately, it's not the game that I wanted them to make. I'm just going to make this short and sweet and break this review up into pros and cons...

    PROS:
    - Awesome graphics, amazing lighting, and insane effects make for a very visceral experience.
    - Infantry combat just feels great. Everything from running, jumping, and shooting feels very solid and refined.
    - The sounds! Wow! Just amazing.
    - Conquest, Rush, and TDM on every map.
    - Weapons feel pretty well balanced for the most part, although no game gets balance right on the first go.
    - Battlelog is a particularly good server browser for the game.

    CONS:
    - People who don't have multiple monitors might find Battlelog to be cumbersome.
    - Sloppy blue-glowing UI design that is hard to read and makes very poor use of available screen space.
    - Chat window is idiotically placed in the right-center of the display, overlaps a considerable portion of the view, doesn't scale with resolution.
    - No in-game VOIP.
    - Horrible mouse control for jets. After you move the mouse the jet's control surfaces auto-center, which makes maneuvering erratic at best.
    - Only basic joystick support. You can't set joystick control rates or individual sensitivities for different vehicles.
    - Game configuration can only be accessed while you're spawned in a live match.
    - No ability to save kits.
    - Poor overall map design. Conquest maps feel much smaller than BF2 maps and flags are spaced closer together. Battles feel less "epic" than BF2, overall.
    - The command rose is utterly useless in its current form. It takes a second for it to pop up, and then it's impossible to see which item you have selected.

I could go on with the cons, but I think I'll stop there. BF3 is a great game in its own right, but it's not really what I consider to be a true successor to BF2. It's more like a hybrid of BC2 and BF2 with smaller-feeling maps, smaller-feeling battles, less epic-ness, and very little feeling that you're playing in a "sandbox" environment. There's not as much stuff in BF3 to have fun with as there was in BF2 and, to a certain extent, BC2 as well. DICE has whittled the Battlefield experience down to the husk, leaving only a few kernels of hope that it could one day grow into the game BF2 veterans really wanted. The "Back To Karkand" expansion may make or break this game for a lot of veteran players.

This game is amazingly fun and I will be spending months of play time on it. Ability to log-in anywhere to see stats and friends stats without having the game installed everywhere (ex. at my work) is great. My one problem is there is no squad voice chat in multiply player... it's okay I guess because my friends are using a third-party application and we can talk among ourselves. It's when my friends aren't playing, I wish there was a way to talk to your squad... it is a squad based shooter.

And all the negative user reviews: Here's the thing... If your computer is older than a year and don't want to invest in computer parts, don't buy this game... we who have money to modernize don't want you to play anyways. Other thing, I hate MW players that complain it's too hard... maybe because this game is too realistic and not an arcade shooter. I play both and MW is a run-and-shoot where BF is a think-and-shoot game.

In short, probably the best multi-player shooter on the market at this time. Single-player may not be particularly special, but the multi-player aspect of this game simply blows its competitors away. Game of the year? We'll have to see, but it's certainly in the running.

It's all a matter of taste, after all. They each provide a certain type of entertainment – when talking about Battlefield 3, it involves a bigger game, more open in its possibilities and more spectacular. But on a longer timeline, less frantic and with fewer Bruce Willis scenes than the mass appeal beast it set itself to dethrone.
