You'll meet a number of great people from that time period such as Sokrates, Plato, Perikles, Alkibiades, Brasidas.
On top of that historical locations, and occasionally some background on the mythology surrounding them.

Gameplay is good - though not what I would expect from an AC game.
Not even the climbing works properly... THE CLIMBING

The other beef I have with the gameplay is the level system and the whole idea of having to constantly play around with your gear.
Like - you could after every encounter go ahead and update your gear with the newest and best items. And the UI constantly reminds you that there's new items for each and every slot so it's a constant notification fest. Like... go away please.

So, what you are actually supposed to do however is building legendary gear sets and upgrading them, and switching between those sets based on what you want to do.
And if you don't do that and have a special assassin set, you won't kill even the lowest of soldiers with stealth attacks.
    This bad.

Upgrading items is very pricey though - so you'll end up running around with gear that is 10 levels lower because you can't afford to upgrade it. I'm not 100% sure but I bet you can insert coins to buy items... otherwise I see no reason for this design.
    This bad.

And then there's the issue that you can't possibly, due to the level system, just play through the main story and be done with it. You absolutely have to do side quests in order to level up.
    This bad.

All in all however, it's a good game - I really liked Cassandra and the other major NPCs.
Really funny side quests - totally worth.
But - this is not an AC game.

Odyssey is the best that Assassin's Creed has been since the original Ezio Trilogy. Any direction you look in could be from a painting; the game is absolutely gorgeous and does a great job at immersing the player in their surroundings. The combat feels fluid and there's plenty to explore in the world. It truly feels like you've traveled into Ancient Greece through your monitor.

Origins was a strong return to form for the series, and I was happy to see Odyssey carry that torch with pride. It seems to do everything its predecessor did and more.

For the PC version, I will deduct one point from a full 10 due to performance issues, but that's to be expected for a game as ambitious as this.

I am truly amazed by the sheer amount of negativity towards this game. I mean sure there are some scummy things Ubi has pulled that's why it's not a 10/10 game but it's still no 6. I mean Syndicate was boring AF and it still outscores this game in user reviews. I don't care for critic reviews as they can be bought and are mostly disconnected to their audience these days but i expected better user scores for this game.

The Pros heavily outweighs the cons for me. Biggest con in any AAA game these days is lack of optimization for PC hardware. It still is evident here. Then Ubi sold microtransactions that are gameplay altering which is another con. But as i said they are optional and in real sense optional, not Like EA's FIFA like optional. I never felt the need to buy those XP boosters at all for progression as i like exploring and doing some side questing all the time. And as for gear, well nothing in store outshines anything you get in normal gameplay stat wise. So as scummy as that practice is, this game is not Microtransactione mess by any stretch. I guess direction that this series has taken may be a con to some AC series fans but it's no big deal for me. I am not purist. If the game is well made and let's me immerse into the story and world then it's ok to deviate from it's predecessor. Many fans didn't think even AC black flag as a 'true' assassin's creed game, may be they are right but that still doesn't make Black flag any less enjoyable. I haven't played AC 1 and AC 2 but played every other release of this game and this game has to be the second best of the games i played of this series. Second only to black flag. I miss the stealth gameplay and staying true to the lore of assassins which i feel is missing to the level of non existent in the origins and odyssey. Witcher 3 impact is clearly visible but as i said, it's still a very enjoyable game. You get to do vast amounts of exploration, the side questing is well written, main story is okayish and your choices do have an impact on the outcome. The dialogue writing is good too.

Let's address the SJW element, well they are there but for most part doesn't come off in your face. I still can't get over the fact that you can choose the gender of the ancestor and let's say you want to implement that for the sake of new direction you want to take the game in, at least make that well not superficial like the way it's implemented in the game. Every thing including dialogues and how world reacts to you is same irrespective of who you choose to play as. I mean that's like missing the whole point of these kind of choices, there have to be different outcomes, different how world looks at you, treats you, but no Ubisoft doesn't want to be bothered with those details, for them the peloponnesian world is all like it's in modern times and there is absolutely no difference in how people treat you, speak with you if you were a man or woman. Alexios should have different dialogue options at least in some quests and some quests to have different ways to complete them so does Kassandra. But apparently big brawny female warriors was a common thing in ancient greece according to ubisoft and people won't be surprised to see a female mercenary at all. That kind of nuance can't be expected from any game DEV so the purpose is not to single out Ubisoft specifically here, most game devs are culprit of the same mistakes.

To sum it up, AC Odyssey is a brilliant action RPG with some meaningful choices having impact on outcomes with decent side quests, sprawling beautiful landscapes and full of secrets and things to do. The game's negatives won't deprive you of any enjoyment if you are not playing with any prejudice. The concerns related to Microtransactions are valid and even though they don't spoil this game but we must call this out. The optimization should be done properly as people pay same price on PC for this game too. All in all, at least for me, this has to be the best AC game since 2014. Worth playing with all its expansions.

    * They did a good job incorporating previous attacks / assassination styles like using the zipline from Revelations - it is very well done in this game with excellent animations.
    * Roaming music is excellent, along with the theme music (although they borrowed the direct theme from Assassin's Creed 2 and Ezio.
    * Mercenary system was enjoyable in the way it functioned, essentially causing boss units to come looking for you when you build up notoriety.

    Cons:

    * No Multi GPU Support - inexcusable on a AAA title that has payed licensing fees for multiple performance-impacting DRM layers (Denuvo + VMProtect) that don't prevent piracy.
    * Layla Hassan - she deserves her own bullet point for just how awful of a character she is. I mean almost every scene she's in is absolutely insufferable cringe. Another Mary Sue character like Rey Palpatine who's the "bestest evar" at everything she does.
    * Female character Kassandra written as canon protagonist. Too much social justice from Ubisoft these days.
    * I am not a fan of Layla & the present-day story as it's just so convoluted - they've really dropped the ball on it over the last 5-7 games. Basically since Desmond died it's been garbage that has failed to really anchor the present day to ensure everything makes sense. I miss Desmond still and the original crew. Ubisoft really screwed up in killing him off. Layla is a terrible character that I keep hoping will be killed as soon as possible.
    * Too much mystical crap in these games - they are clearly trying to copy The Witcher games' high fantasy universe by bringing in monsters and magical items. Isu artifacts are excepted from that, but too much magical stuff happening that really ruins these games. This isn't a high fantasy game with magical fireswords and mystical giant monsters and things of that nature - it's just absurd.
    * No information database - these were invaluable in earlier games.
    * The eagle used for scouting is a bit over-used by Ubisoft. It made sense in Far Cry Primal and was a stretch with Bayek in AC Origins...they need to stop re-using so many mechanics over and over and over.
    * Combat system is very clunky. Even worse than Origins. Some things are improved in terms of timing like Parrying, but overall the targeting and control system is clunky and chaotic. AC3's was by far the best.
    * The romance options lack sex scenes - Ubi needs to man up and not be afraid of sex scenes or showing women looking sexy.
    * WAY WAY WAY too much homosexuality in the game both present day and in Greece.
    * Present day story is just so poorly constructed - the games don't really flow together properly anymore because of how badly Ubisoft has bungled the present day story.
    * Essentially non-existent stealth mechanics - this is an open-world combat game that's basically a copy of Witcher 3, just minus all the great things that made Witcher 3 a masterpiece. I don't really consider this game or Origins to be Assassin's Creed games - they have the title and references to animus technology, but that's about it - totally missing the mechanics that would make them an AC game.
    * The RPG mechanics are terrible - can't tell you how many times I had to put about 20 arrows through a target's head to kill him, or hidden blades.
    * Can't fast travel while on the ship to various ports.
    * Horse movement mechanics are not very good - can't tell you how many times I've had my horse decide to jump into the ocean or off a mountain when I was not heading in that direction at all.
    * Excessive feminism from Ubisoft yet again...changing history to have women doing things they never did back in those times. I don't think it's too much to ask for historical accuracy with the laws and histories of people.
    * Wish there had been a little more to the Aspasia romance option to develop a better ending for the protagonist. It's so limited story-wise that it feels like an incomplete end-game. She was such a beautiful girl, and historically she can't be killed by Alexios so they should have allowed a better end-game romance option with Aspasia.
    * Game is WAY WAY WAY too long. ~220 hours for me in one playthrough doing probably ~90% of the game. AC games shouldn't go longer than 50 hours at the high end. Ubi just shoves too much side crap into the game.
    * Legacy of the First Blade DLC - First two chapters were fantastic, but in typical Ubisoft fashion, destroyed at the end with bad storytelling and narrative decisions.
    * Fate of Atlantis DLC - overall not a good DLC. Some story aspects were good, but mostly it was incredibly boring with awful map traversal.

    Gameplay Length: ~220 Hours

Final Rating: 4/10 - I do not recommend buying this game - if you decide to do so, wait for an extreme sale - I'm talking like 90% off.

Odyssey continues a revolting Ubisoft trend of actively designing gameplay mechanics that hinder progression and make the game feel artificial and boring in order to incentivize micro-transactions. What, you thought they went the RPG route in the hopes of giving their stagnating franchise a much needed new breath? Please.

Combat feels floaty and disconnected from the characters, less like they're swinging around steel weapons and more like they're play-fighting with styrofoam toys. Every enemy has an inordinately large health bar and staggers very little from your attacks, so interruptions are very recurrent and completely break the flow of the fight. Your best option to avoid said nuisances is (surprise surprise!) to level up faster in order to unlock absurd magical powers and be able to equip better gear, and what better way of doing that than to hand Ubisoft even more money?

On the same vein, level disparities between the player and the enemies lead to ridiculous situations such as enemies surviving being stabbed multiple times through the neck by magical weapons. If you're stubborn (and let's be honest here, also slightly psychotic), you can still fight adversaries several levels above your station by hiding in the tall grass and shooting arrows at their face until they die - it's just gonna take half an hour - A.I. isn't smart enough to find you nor run away, so it's doable.

Don't even get me started on the plot. Several dialogue options and phrases to end conversations are copy-pasted, making the stilted conversations feel even more robotic and emotionless than they already did. Writers couldn't figure out how to tie the plot threads together, so they just didn't, instead leaving the core narratives literally separated into their own progressions and totally incapable of influencing the player or the world at large. Every single conclusion feels detached from your character choices, and the best thing you can hope for is to get one lukewarm cutscene at the end.

I could spend literal hours complaining about how little your choices matter in this story, but the game does a pretty good job at that with the Spartan-Athenian battles. You can join one side of the battle, conquer the territory for one the factions, then immediately start to sabotage the victors to trigger a new battle and flip the board again, this time siding with the other guys. Repeat ad-nauseum, like you're Sisyphus himself and this is your personal hell - reliving the same battlefield again and again, switching sides on a whim for identical gear that just happens to give 2% extra fire damage. Neither option matters. Your notoriety doesn't matter. Your wishy-washy allegiance is never questioned or meaningful. You could single-handedly conquer all of Greece in the name of Sparta and the game wouldn't care, acknowledge it or let that affect the plot in any meaningful way. There is no point to your soulless existence.

At least the graphics are nice tho.

The games expertly divides the map though to vary between difficulty so don't worry about it too much. The whole premise of AC Odyssey is to figure out the mystery story wise and from a gameplay wise to get stronger by getting better gear and abilities. It is straightforward and overdone but the games setting looks beautiful and Ubisoft has added other elements to increase replay value of the game from finding out secrets that can in turn be new cosmetics for your ship crew to the naval battles themselves. If they wanna make a game about a Greek story why just don't they make a brand-new game? It could be about the 300 Spartans against the Persians, but NOOO, they just want to milk their cash cow, Assasins Creed until it is completely dead.

That said, the game gameplay isn't bad, the stealth is just like any other generic AC, which is a good system. The combat is the most different part, now it has an RPG level system and your character has special skills with cooldown, like a fast thrust that deals massive damage to everyone on the way or a single target skill that thrown down an enemy.

The open world is immense but empty. The only thing you have to do is just the same Ubisoft useless collectible and get some new weapons and armors for no purpose at all. The sidequests style is a copy of The Witcher 3.

-Finally an AC title with dialogue choices with an impact on the game

-Good combat, well paced with quite a few challenges when you play on the highest difficulty

-Lovely world, I especially liked the islands

-Enough funny moments (a real must for me to enjoy a game), but also some very good dramatic scenes

-Good looking equipment in the endgame (in the early game you end up looking like you actually mix everything together you looted from corpses)

-Very few trips out of the Animus, which were very immersion breaking in previous titles and not at all great for the gaming experience

    Cons:

-The world is too large/has too few interesting things to discover

-Voice acting was not always fit for a AAA title

    -Too few character interactions imo

-Micro-transactions simply do not belong into singleplayer games. (Also XP boosters are probably a reason why you have to do quite some side activities to keep up with the main stories level recommendations)

All in all I really enjoyed this game and appreciate the direction Ubisoft has taken with this title. The fact that the story and dialogues were all set in stone in previous games took some of the joy out of the experience for me.

Graphics is amazing. The first 10-20 hours of gameplay is really good. However, after passing certain point of the game, the gameplay becomes in a repetitive grinding mode. Applying a few of these side missions are acceptable, but for most of the main quest? no thanks. It's so tedious to grind out the quest to get enough xp for leveling up, not fun at all.

Also, the control is wonky. Character always stuck on walls or fence and never get on the ground.

They did it. The characters, the stories, it's all there.
No, it's no longer a climb & parry simulator, there are plenty of those, so go play them instead of whining. This is finally an RPG. They built on the direction Origins took and they made it whole.

Yes, combat is annoying at times, but overall, engaging. Yes, the mercenaries are bugged and often more of a distraction than anything. The resource system is nondescript and the itemization is lacking.
But the stories this game tells, how much you can learn, the impressive world (that could still use more bustle, more liveliness), the emotional roller coaster that is Legacy and the fun and almost comic-y theme park that is Atlantis all makes more than up for it.
The side story in the real world is no longer annoying and convoluted, although at times requires a bit more reading because it clashes with the whole mysticism and religion thing.
Honestly, get over yourselves and just have some fun, because this is is: fun. On all levels. Not just pressing parry. Anyone who thinks the reboot wasn't necessary either didn't play Syndicate or is just lying to themselves because that was mostly a chore.

Odyssey is a bit less interesting then Origins. The map size is quite big, bigger then Origins in fact. The story is surely an interesting part, but it's the side quest with a ! that are fun to do. They mix humor, philosophy, ethics and politics into the mix. All the bounties, contracts are very dull. I did them at first but stopped halfway. I also stopped all the taking sides of an army, because it has no real impact on the story. The fighting is the same, got better with the arc. The naval fight are still fun. The water effects, the quality of the textures on high is great. The draw distance isn't always well adjusted and some lighting's takes too much time to render. The sounds are fine especially when the sea is near or involved. The animation can be robotic at times but in general it's not too distracting. The music wasn't as strong then Origin. I did love the boat singing, especially with a female crew. I recommend you play this game on EASY. You need to be one or two levels over your enemies to enjoy this. Even then, it will take around 65 to 80 hours to finish the main quest with most of the side ! quests. There is another ending after the first one. There was less modern content and that was a deception in the end. I give the game a 77%. A big RPG with too much useless stuff but there is some things related to the birth of democracy, philosophy, medicine in the Greek-Spartan worlds. Expand

It´s too long and feels to me like there is an interesting set for a lineal game with some exploration in it. The combat gets old quickly and lacks a compelling story or characters, its a shame because there is a very good 20-30 hours game inside it. Sadly Ubisoft wants to make huge open worlds where u need to sink hours and hours while getting worthless equipment over and over.

Something else that i dont like at all is seeing cities so close together, its a huge world but to me it feels like there is too much in it and therefore everything feels really close. Historically speaking Athenes had a 10 km long fortification that connected the port of Pireus, but in this game is all together. Thats why i prefer to fewer locations with realistic distances instead of this game´s world

The latest addition to the Assassin's Creed franchise is truly a wonder and a fresh take on a stale idea. The excellent execution, gameplay and story is only overshadowed by greedy micro transactions, paid XP and awful optimization.

An excellent and beautiful game from ancient Greece. Maybe it’s very different from the first game, however this evolution benefits the brand. [Issue#290]

While AC: Origins was packed with interesting stories, Odyssey is a generic ’Ubisoft sandbox’ in the worst sense, with hundreds of the same-looking places, dozens of ”kill-fetch” quests and almost zero motivation to grind further.
